The Research on Factors Influencing Air Pollution

The rapid development of urbanization contributes to that the people’ life is more and more beautiful and their quality of life is better and better. There are a lot of complex and diversity influencing of air pollutants. This paper finds a lot of articles and reports of government and focus on four air pollutants: carbon monoxide, ozone, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter, including ultra-fine particles. Air pollution can cause three major environmental problems, including greenhouse effect, acid rain, and ozone hole, which can cause significant damage to the lungs and respiratory tract of the human body, such as chronic lung disease, neurological damage, and heart disease. The purpose of the article is to find some factors that affect air pollution. Using the method of multiple linear regression turns out that there is a significant linear regression relationship between human activities, exhaust emissions from vehicles, ships, airplanes, industrial pollutant, meteorological conditions, landform and PM2.5, while the speed and direction of wind fail the important test.

Factor XI activity in ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction

Abstract Background ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is characterized by a significant thrombotic burden, where the coagulation cascade, including Factor XI (FXI) activity, plays a crucial role. In STEMI and other thrombotic conditions, FXI levels vary according to patient characteristics and timing from the event. Understanding the changes in FXI activity may offer valuable insights into the optimal patient selection and timing for use of investigational FXI inhibitors. Purpose Our aim was to characterize variations in FXI activity in STEMI patients. Methods In this prospective, observational study, patients admitted with STEMI underwent two measurements of plasma FXI activity, prior to coronary angiography and at discharge, using the HemosIL assay. The variation in FXI activity at these timepoints was compared between patients with and without coronary thrombus, as detected by an angiographic core-lab. Linear regression analyses were conducted to test the association of candidate predictors with FXI variation between admission and discharge (i.e., presence of coronary thrombus, PCI of the culprit artery, Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction flow post-PCI, bailout use of glycoprotein IIb/IIIa inhibitors, time to second measurement of FXI activity) and with FXI value at admission (i.e., age, sex, atrial fibrillation, late [>24 hours] STEMI presentation, presence of coronary thrombus). Results From November 2023 to February 2024, 49 STEMI patients were included. The median variation in FXI activity among admission and discharge was +24.8% (interquartile range [IQR] 11.8; 69.0; p<0.001). This variation was observed in both patients with (+41.6% [IQR 14.3; 74.6]; p<0.001) and without (+21.8% [IQR -2.3;40.7]; p=0.008) thrombus at coronary angiography, with significant interaction effects compared to the global STEMI population (p for interaction <0.001). An inverse linear regression relationship was observed between presence of coronary thrombus and changes in FXI activity (coefficient -33.0, 95% CI -59.5 to -7.2; p=0.012). Furthermore, in the model exploring predictors of FXI activity at admission, thrombus presence (coefficient -40.9, 95% CI -75.3 to -6.4; p=0.024) and subacute presentation (coefficient 90.8, 95% CI 21.9 to 159.8; p=0.015) emerged as significant predictors, albeit with contrasting effects on FXI activity. Figure 1 Conclusions Our findings reveal significant increases in FXI activity from admission to discharge in STEMI patients. The inverse relationship between the presence of coronary thrombus and FXI activity variations, along with the contrasting associations among initial FXI levels and subacute patients’ presentation or thrombus presence, support the importance of FXI in the coagulation process during STEMI. These findings suggest targeted FXI inhibition, especially early in STEMI management, could be beneficial, meriting detailed investigation in future studies.Multivariable linear regression analysis

Comprehensive Statistical Analysis of ISSN Records

The history of the origin and transformation of the ISSN Register is considered, and all publications available through Google Scholar and Semantic Scholar on the number of ISSN records and their dynamics are collected together. Data on the number of entries in the ISSN Register by country for 2014 and 2021 is presented, along with the seven-year increase in these entries in comparison with similar data for 1991 through 1998. From these data, the top ten countries were analyzed based on the maximum increase in records over these two seven-year periods. It is shown that the first list of countries with the maximum increase in the number of ISSN records for 2014 through 2021 included exclusively developing countries, and the second list (1991–1998) included mainly developed countries. Similar increases in the number of ISSN records were analyzed for the languages of serial publications and it was shown that in both language lists there was only the Turkish language and the leading European languages were absent. It is shown that the total contributions of ISSN records of leading countries and languages to the total number of ISSN records satisfy the Pareto principle for all years studied. The calculations were made on the indices of linguistic liberalization of the information space of states and information and linguistic influence (or language expansion) according to ISSN indicators. It is shown that aggregating countries by language has made it possible to significantly reduce the discrepancy between the total ISSN records for countries in which a particular language predominates and the ISSN records for a given language. These differences for calculations for 2014 and 2021 levels did not exceed 9% for English, Spanish and Portuguese, and 14% for French, which corresponds to the languages of former colonial empires. In conclusion, a linear regression relationship between ISSN/10 thousand people and GDP per capita with moderate values of the correlation coefficient was obtained in two versions, which indirectly confirms the Constancy Hypothesis.

Micro scale chromatography of human plasma proteins for nano LC-ESI-MS/MS

Organic precipitation of proteins with acetonitrile demonstrated complete protein recovery and improved chromatography of human plasma proteins. The separation of 25 μL of human plasma into 22 fractions on a QA SAX resin facilitated more effective protein discovery despite the limited sample size. Micro chromatography of plasma proteins over quaternary amine (QA) strong anion exchange (SAX) resins performed best, followed by diethylaminoethyl (DEAE), heparin (HEP), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), and propyl sulfate (PS) resins. Two independent statistical methods, Monte Carlo comparison with random MS/MS spectra and the rigorous X!TANDEM goodness of fit algorithm protein p-values corrected to false discovery rate q-values (q ≤ 0.01) agreed on at least 12,000 plasma proteins, each represented by at least three fully tryptic corrected peptide observations. There was qualitative agreement on 9393 protein/gene symbols between the linear quadrupole versus orbital ion trap but also quantitative agreement with a highly significant linear regression relationship between log observation frequency (F value 4,173, p-value 2.2e-16). The use of a QA resin showed nearly perfect replication of all the proteins that were also found using DEAE-, HEP-, CMC-, and PS-based chromatographic methods combined and together estimated the size of the size of the plasma proteome as ≥12,000 gene symbols.

The Relationship Between Computerized Face and Tongue Image Segmentation and Metabolic Parameters in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Based on Machine Learning.

We aim to examine and reestablish the correlational and linear regression relationships, as well as the predictive value, between the significant facial and tongue features and the metabolic parameters in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). From March to May 2024, we studied 269 patients with T2DM in the endocrinology department of Shanghai Pudong Hospital. The patients' facial and tongue characteristics were sampling by a tongue imaging device equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) (XiMaLife, Sinology, China) of automated and advanced machine learning algorithms. Then, the imaging features were examined in relation to the blood examination. Multiple facial and tongue features, as well as dimensional facial and tongue color parameters, were significantly correlated with glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) (r < 0.3, p < 0.05), glycated albumin (GA) (-0.20 < 0.30, p < 0.05), C-peptide (-0.20.20, p < 0.05), plasma insulin (r < 0.30, p < 0.05), fasting plasma glucose (FPG) (r < 0.3, p < 0.05), significant hepatic and renal function indicators (-0.30 < r < 0.20, p<0.05), cardiac injury markers (-0.30 < r < 0.30, p < 0.05), tumor markers (-0.5 < r < 0.5, p < 0.05), thyroid function (-0.15 < r < 0.55, p < 0.05), and blood cell count, including white blood cells (r < 0.2, p < 0.05), and hemoglobin (Hb) (-0.30 < r < 0.3, 0.0001. The correlational results demonstrated that the tongue's characteristics and signsmay be linked with the dynamic of the metabolic status of T2DM. In order to examine the causal relationships, we performed linear regression analyses, which revealed that various facial and tongue imaging parameters partially determined the metabolic indicators. The predictive value of imaging features was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) to assess metabolic status in T2DM. This study demonstrated that metabolic status, renal and hepatic, cardiac, and thyroid function, the proportion of blood cells, and Hb in T2DM were intimately associated with facial and tongue features. The precise analysis of facial and tongue features through AI and advanced machine learning could be used to predict T2DM's conditions and progression.

Physical characteristics identification of the concrete interfacial transition zone via 3D image scanning

The interfacial transition zone (ITZ) is the weakest link in concrete materials. The physical characteristics of the ITZ, such as its microhardness and thickness, significantly influence the mechanical properties and durability of concrete. Typically, microhardness testing is employed to identify the physical features of the ITZ through line measurements with a certain degree of randomness. In order to accurately describe ITZ physical characteristics, this study proposes a novel physical characteristics identification method via three-dimensional (3D) image scanning. The fundamental principle of this method lies in the varying hardness of each concrete phase, resulting in different surface elevations after polishing. As the polishing abrasiveness changes from coarse (240 mesh) to fine (800 mesh), the ITZ can be clearly observed in the 3D point cloud images of the experimental concrete. The ITZ geometrical information (thickness and different surface heights) can be easily identified using 3D scanned images. It was also found that there was a considerable linear regression relationship between the height difference and the relative microhardness variation; thus, the ITZ microhardness could be indirectly recognized through surface measurements. The physical characteristics of ITZ can be statistically analysed, effectively mitigating the bias inherent in traditional test results and significantly improving identification efficiency and accuracy.

A New Perspective on the Scattering Mechanism of S-Band Weather Radar Clear-Air Echoes Based on Communication Models

Clear-air echo studies are usually based on isotropic turbulence theory. But the theory has been considered incomplete by modern turbulence theory. The intermittence of turbulence can reveal obvious shortcomings in the existing studies of clear-air echoes. The mechanism of clear-air echo scattering needs to be supplemented. This paper introduces the troposcatter theory, normally used in over-the-horizon communication, to fill the gap left by Bragg scattering. By treating radar as a self-transmitted and self-received device, the equivalent transmission loss of weather radar is established and compared with the recommendations of the Radiocommunication Sector of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU-R). The results show that the S-band radar transmission loss aligns with ITU-R recommendations. There is also a linear regression relationship between the radar transmission loss and height, which conforms to the troposcatter theory. This means that the theory of troposcatter scattering is a supplement to the theory of Bragg scattering. Tropospheric scattering can be thought of as general Bragg scattering. Meanwhile, based on ITU-R recommendations, this study also provides a new way for the recognition of biological echoes.

Estimating S-wave amplitude for earthquake early warning in New Zealand: Leveraging the first 3 seconds of P-Wave

This study addresses the critical question of predicting the amplitude of S-waves during earthquakes in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ), a highly earthquake-prone region, for implementing an Earthquake Early Warning System (EEWS). This research uses ground motion parameters from a comprehensive dataset comprising historical earthquakes in the Canterbury region of NZ. It explores the potential to estimate the damaging S-wave amplitude before it arrives, primarily focusing on the initial P-wave signals. The study establishes nine linear regression relationships between P-wave and S-wave amplitudes, employing three parameters: peak ground acceleration, peak ground velocity, and peak ground displacement. Each relationship’s performance is evaluated through correlation coefficient (R), coefficient of determination (R²), root mean square error (RMSE), and 5-fold Cross-validation RMSE, aiming to identify the most predictive empirical model for the Canterbury context. Results using a weighted scoring approach indicate that the relationship involving P-wave Peak Ground Velocity (Pv) within a 3-second window strongly correlates with S-wave Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA), highlighting its potential for EEWS. The selected empirical relationship is subsequently applied to establish a P-wave amplitude (Pv) threshold for the Canterbury region as a case study from which an EEWS could benefit. The study also suggests future research exploring complex machine learning models for predicting S-wave amplitude and expanding the analysis with more datasets from different regions of NZ.

Effects of ankle isokinetic training on muscle strength and balance amongst older women with mild Parkinson's disease: A randomised trial.

Patients with Parkinson's disease frequently experience problems with balance and gait. This study examined the influences of regular ankle isokinetic muscle strength training on muscle strength and balance ability amongst elderly women with mild Parkinson's disease. A total of 55elderly women with mild Parkinson's disease were randomly divided into the experimental group (n= 28) and the control group (n= 27) for 16weeks. The experimental group was trained for 16weeks by using isokinetic muscle strength training. After 16weeks of training in the experimental group, the peak torque (PT) of ankle (average of the left and right sides) dorsiflexion, plantarflexion, eversion and inversion, and the standing balance index revealed that the left and right stability and overall stability indexes significantly increased by 25.9%, 43.5%, 62.7%, 82.8%, 37.1% and 32.2%, respectively (p< 0.05). The experimental group exhibited significantly increased PT of ankle dorsiflexion, plantarflexion, eversion and inversion. Moreover, the left and right stability and overall stability indexes were significantly improved compared with those of the control group (p< 0.05). This study found a linear regression relationship between the PT of ankle inversion and overall stability index. This study determined that ankle isokinetic muscle strength training improved ankle dorsiflexion, plantarflexion, eversion and inversion muscle strength, and balance ability amongst elderly women with mild Parkinson's disease. However, it did not improve stability in the anterior and posterior directions. Ankle inversion muscle strength is more likely to affect overall balance.

The Effects of Different Blood Sample and Anticoagulant Types on Quantitative Tests of B-Type Natriuretic Peptide.

BNP is a sensitive and widely used biomarker for an early diagnosis of heart failure. Currently, most commercial BNP detection products use EDTA plasma samples. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical performance of the BNP test by using whole blood samples compared to plasma samples, and to evaluate the effect of the anticoagulant type on the BNP test result. In total, 106 patients with different BNP levels from the Dahua Hospital volunteered for this study. Clinically homogenous samples, including EDTA anticoagulant plasma, EDTA whole blood, and heparin anticoagulant plasma, were collected and analyzed by using i-Reader S automatic immuno-analyzer and its supporting reagent kits. Pearson's correlation and weighted least squares linear regression analysis, Bland-Altman plotting, and Kappa test were used for statistical analysis. Correlation analysis showed that BNP concentrations, measured from EDTA anticoagulated plasma samples, had a good linear regression relationship with BNP from whole blood samples, with a slope of 0.9477, r = 0.9978, p < 0.05. A similar correlation was observed between EDTA anticoagulated plasma samples and heparin anticoagulant plasma, with a slope of 0.8413, r = 0.9793, p < 0.05. The BNP concentration measured from the heparin plasma samples were lower than of the EDTA plasma samples. Bland-Altman analysis for assessing BNP concentration agreement showed there was no outlier ratio between EDTA whole blood and EDTA plasma within the range of the detection system, as well as no outlier between EDTA anticoagulated and heparin anticoagulant plasma. Kappa coefficient of BNP concentration between homologous EDTA anticoagulated and heparin anticoagulant plasma was 0.8553 (p < 0.001), and for EDTA anticoagulated plasma and homologous whole blood it was 0.8941 (p < 0.001). The diagnostic performance of EDTA anticoagulated whole blood samples did not differ significantly from EDTA anticoagulated plasma samples for the BNP test. This study showed no big significant difference between EDTA anticoagulated and heparin anticoagulated plasma measurements within 2 hours. The type of anticoagulant should be carefully chosen when performing the BNP test if BNP samples were in vitro for a long time.

HPTLC Stability Indicating Analytical Method of Andrographolide and 5-fluorouracil with Network Pharmacology Analysis against Cancer.

Herbal drugs when used in combination with chemotherapeutic drugs can reduce the side effects and increase the efficacy by acting on multiple targets. Andrographolide (AG), a diterpene lactone isolated from Andrographis paniculata Nees, is a bioactive compound with anticancer potential, and 5-fluorouracil (FU), a pyrimidine analogue, is used in the treatment of cancer. Both drugs are used to formulate combination nanoformulation to increase absorption, thereby increasing their oral bioavailability. The study aimed to develop and validate stability indicating simultaneous HPTLC method for quantification of FU and AG in combination nanoformulation along with in silico docking and network pharmacology analysis to understand the interaction between the drugs and cancer targets. Chromatographic separation was performed using mobile phase chloroform: methanol: formic acid (9: 0.5: 0.5, v/v/v) on HPTLC silica plates 60 F254 as a stationary phase using UV-Vis detector and HPTLC scanner at 254 nm. Further, in silico docking analysis was performed to predict the binding affinity of AG and FU with different proteins and network pharmacology to find out the exact biomolecular relationship of AG and FU in alleviating cancer. The data from the calibration curve showed a good linear regression relationship with r² = 0.9981 (FU) and r² = 0.9977 (AG) in the concentration range of 0.1-2.0 μg/mL. The developed method was validated according to the ICH guidelines. Stability studies showed changes in peak patterns and areas. Bioinformatic and network pharmacology analyses of AG and FU with target proteins and genes associated with cancer play a multimechanistic role in alleviating cancer. The developed method has been concluded to be robust, simple, precise, reproducible, accurate, and stability indicating for simultaneous quantification of AG and FU, and the molecular interaction studies have further indicated that the combination nanoformulation of AG and FU could be effective against cancer.

Estimation of soil health in the semi‑arid regions of northwestern Iran using digital elevation model and remote sensing data.

Nowadays, neglecting soil conservation issues is one of the most critical factors in reducing soil health (SH). In this regard, to facilitate the estimation of the SH in northwestern Iran, 292 soil samples were taken from a depth of 0-30cm of this area, and a wide range of soil properties were determined. Then, soil health indices (SHIs) were calculated. Simultaneously, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), surface water capacity index (SWCI), and a digital elevation model (DEM) were obtained from satellite data. Finally, multiple linear regression (MLR) relationships between these parameters and SHIs were calculated. In this study, there was a highest significant positive correlation (P < 0.01) between IHI-LTDS and SWCI (0.71**), DEM (0.76**), and NDVI (0.73**). The MLR, with both the whole total (TDS) and minimal (MDS) dataset methods, which includes the aforementioned indices, strongly described the spatial variability of the Integrated Soil Health Index (IHI) (R2 = 0.78, AIC = - 416, RMSE = 0.05, and ρc = 0.76). According to the results of this study, it can be said that the development of SH estimation models using remote sensing extracted parameters can be one of the effective ways to reduce the cost and time of soil sampling in extensive areas.

Long-Term Visual Quality and Pupil Changes after Small-Incision Lenticule Extraction for Eyes without Preoperative Cylinder Refraction.

To investigate the long-term changes in visual quality and pupil size after small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) for eyes without preoperative cylinder refraction. Thirty-three myopic eyes (33 patients) without preoperative cylinder refraction were corrected using SMILE. Refractive outcomes, corneal curvature, aberrations, contrast sensitivity (CS), and pupil diameter were evaluated preoperatively, and 30 months postoperatively. The 30-month postoperative uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity (UDVA and CDVA, LogMAR) were -0.10 ± 0.09 and -0.14 ± 0.06, respectively, whereas the preoperative CDVA (LogMAR) was -0.07 ± 0.05. Cylinder refraction of -0.11 ± 0.21 D (ranging from -0.50 to 0.00) was observed at 30 months postoperatively, increasing from the preoperative cylinder refraction of 0.00 ± 0.00 D (P=0.004). Moreover, the centroid coordinates x, y of corneal anterior astigmatic vectors were -0.19 ± 0.22, 0.81 ± 0.33 at 30 months postoperatively, and 0.02 ± 0.28, 0.76 ± 0.51 preoperatively (Px < 0.001 and Py=0.810, respectively). Furthermore, a 15° axis change in the mean anterior corneal astigmatic vector was observed at 30 months postoperatively from the preoperative state, as measured by Pentacam. At 30 months postoperatively, the photopic Log CS reduced significantly with glare at three and six cycles/degrees (P < 0.001 and P=0.015, respectively), a decreased photopic pupil diameter (3.27 ± 0.55 mm vs. 3.10 ± 0.66 mm, P=0.030), and an increased Coma (Z31) and Trefoil (Z3-3) at 4 mm diameter area analysis. However, a significant linear regression relationship was only observed between changes in photopic pupil diameter and changes in photopic Log CS with glare at 12 cycles/degree (P=0.038 and β = 0.282). Slight cylinder regression was observed with thicker corneal lenticular extraction after SMILE correction of nonastigmatic eyes 30 months postoperatively. This regression was mainly because of the axis changes in anterior corneal astigmatism power. Therefore, a cylinder nomogram modification of 0.25 to 0.50 D is considerable for correcting nonastigmatic myopic eyes with a predicted spherical lenticular thickness over 100 µm.

Carbon Emission Characteristics and Influencing Factors of Typical Processes in Drinking Water Treatment Plant

Based on the actual operating conditions and data monitoring, the carbon emission characteristics of typical processes of a drinking water treatment plant (DWTP) in Tianjin were studied. The total carbon emission intensity measured by CO2-eq was 0.254 kg·m-3, and the proportion of carbon emissions from electricity consumption and reagent consumption was 81.76% and 9.15%, respectively. The key carbon emission sectors of electricity consumption were the water supply pump house, ultrafiltration membrane process, and inlet pump house, which accounted for 50.99%-73.51%, 17.64%-20.70%, and 17.97%-22.40% of the total carbon emission from electricity consumption in the DWTP, respectively. The contribution of sodium hypochlorite to the carbon emission of reagent consumption was 89.12%-90.30%, followed by ferric chloride, PAC, and ammonium sulfate. In the traditional water purification process, the carbon emission intensity of the process unit was in the order of inlet pump house &gt; rapid filter &gt; sedimentation tank. The order in the ultrafiltration membrane advanced treatment process was inlet pump house &gt; ultrafiltration membrane &gt; mechanical coagulation &gt; clarification tank. The carbon emission intensity of the rapid filter process and the ultrafiltration membrane process were 0.070 9 kg·m-3 and 0.109 0 kg·m-3, respectively. The ultrafiltration membrane process could save 23% of the reagent consumption, and its carbon emission of electricity consumption was twice that of the traditional treatment process. The analysis of factors affecting carbon emission in key sectors showed that the raw water quality parameters such as turbidity, pH, ammonia nitrogen, temperature, etc., were significantly correlated with the carbon emission intensity of sodium hypochlorite. There was a significant linear regression relationship between ex-factory water pressure, daily water supply, and carbon emission intensity of the water supply pump house. The control measures of water quality and water pressure can effectively reduce the carbon emissions of the DWTP.

Study of some morphometric and meristic characteristics of Alepes vari (Cuvier, 1833) collected from the Arabian coast.

The present study examines the correlations between fifteen morphometric and ten meristic characters and total length (TL) of males, females, and combined sexes of Alepes vari (Cuvier, 1833) collected from Karachi fish harbor, West Wharf of Karachi Coast. Statistical analyses of linear regression relationships show mostly strong correlations (r≥0.70; p<0.05) between total length (TL) and most morphometric characters in males, females, and combined sexes, except the height of pectoral-fin (PFH), and pelvic-fin base length (PelFL); whereas, meristic characters were found to be constant and indicate weak or negative type correlations (r≤0.50; p>0.05) with total length (TL). Hence, according to our present results, there is a direct relationship between the total length of fish and all morphometric characters, which were found to be the best indicators of positive allometric pattern growth in fish. Moreover, analysis of the 2-sample t-test revealed (t-test; p>0.05) that no sexual dimorphism was reported in Alepes vari. Thus, our present study could be valuable in systematic classification, sexual dimorphism, and management of this species on the Karachi coast.

Environmental Parameters Related to Hypoxia Development and Persistence in Jinhae Bay from 2011 to 2016 and Their Potential for Hypoxia Prediction

Jinhae Bay, a semi-enclosed bay on the southern coast of Korea, is a major aquaculture area that forms a spawning ground and nursery for commercially important fishes. Since the late 1960s, industrial and domestic waste from adjacent cities and industrial complexes has been released into the region, resulting in chronic hypoxia and red tides. As a central site of environmental monitoring efforts for aquaculture and fisheries in southeastern Korea, Jinhae Bay was surveyed every 2 months usually, and every 2–3 weeks during the hypoxia season, with the seawater properties observed at approximately 31–34 stations. The maximum area and duration of hypoxia in Jinhae Bay occurred in 2016 (316 km2 and 26 weeks, respectively), with minima of area in 2013 (213 km2) and duration in 2011 (15 weeks). Correlation analyses of the seawater properties, weather parameters, and hypoxia indices showed that the hypoxic area was positively correlated with the surface-water temperature, air temperature, and rainfall; the minimum dissolved oxygen concentrations were negatively correlated with the air and water temperatures and bottom-water nutrient levels; and the water stability was negatively correlated with the surface-water salinity and positively correlated with both the surface- and bottom-water nitrate and silicate concentrations. These findings imply that the air temperature and precipitation may be important factors in the development and persistence of hypoxia in Jinhae Bay via the control of the stratification intensity and eutrophication of the water column. Therefore, we tested these parameters for their potential to predict hypoxia. Based on our results, we propose the following trends of hypoxia in Jinhae Bay: the initial hypoxia development generally depends on the criteria of an air temperature ≥ 19.5 °C for 1 week and total precipitation &gt; 100 mm over 4 weeks, and it becomes more severe (≥50% coverage) under strong eutrophication, mainly due to organic matter discharge following heavy rainfall, based on the logarithmic correlation with the 4-week rainfall (R2 = 0.6). Therefore, the hypoxic area index can be predicted using its linear regression relationships with the 1-week air temperature and 4-week precipitation (R2 = 0.56). This study tested the prediction of the hypoxic area based on a simple calculation method and weather parameter criteria, and it demonstrated the potential of this method for precisely forecasting hypoxia in combination with biogeochemical models or other mathematical solutions to prevent massive fishery damage.

Therapeutic drug monitoring of perampanel: Clinical utility and impact of co-medication on pharmacokinetic variability

BackgroundPerampanel (PER) is a newly developed antiseizure medication (ASM). This study aimed to determine the utilization of therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) for PER in a real-world clinical setting and investigate the influence of concomitant use of ASMs on the plasma concentration profile of PER. MethodWe analyzed data from the Chang Gung Research Database, which is the largest multi-institutional electronic medical records database in Taiwan. The main outcomes were the comparisons of PER plasma concentration and the ratio of concentration to the weight-adjusted dose (C/D; [ng/mL]/[mg/kg/d]) among patients received TDM of different clinical indication and among different ASM co-medication subgroups. ResultsOverall, 88 plasma samples were collected from 66 epilepsy patients treated with PER. The majority of patients (77.3 %) underwent PER TDM owing to poorly controlled seizures. There was a trend toward a higher plasma concentration and C/D ratio in those suspected of having PER toxicity owing to adverse events than of other indications. The PER concentration exhibited dose linearity. The mean PER plasma concentrations in patients co-medicated with enzyme-inducing ASMs were significantly lower than those in the patients who were not prescribed enzyme-inducing or enzyme-inhibiting ASMs, and co-medication with carbamazepine (CBZ) resulted in a significant reduction in the PER concentration. ConclusionPER concentration exhibited a linear regression relationship with PER dose, and the plasma concentration of the drug was highly susceptible to the drug's interactions with enzyme-inducing ASMs. TDM with clear indication could help determine the influence of ASMs used concomitantly on PER concentrations and guide clinical adjustments.

A Thermal Time Basis for Comparing the Germination Requirements of Alfalfa Cultivars with Different Fall Dormancy Ratings

Fall dormancy plays important roles in the evaluation of alfalfa’s winter hardiness and in the selection of alfalfa breeding. A rapid and effective method to estimate the fall dormancy rating of alfalfa will shorten the breeding cycle. The purpose of this study is to test the correlations between the germination thermal time model parameters and the fall dormancy ratings and to evaluate the potential of the thermal-based fall dormancy methodology. Alfalfa cultivars with a series of fall dormancy ratings were used to study the responses of seed germination at six constant temperatures (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 °C). The results showed that all cultivars had a relatively high germination percentage at all temperatures and the optimal temperature is 25 or 30 °C. Germination rate and base temperature significantly increased with the fall dormancy rating of alfalfa cultivars while thermal time (θT) decreased with the fall dormancy rating. The extremely significant linear regression relationships between the germination rate, base temperature (Tb), θT, and fall dormancy rating indicated that it is convenient and straightforward to predict the fall dormancy rating of unknown cultivars or lines using thermal time model parameters. This method can significantly shorten the selection and breeding cycles in alfalfa cultivation.

Investigation of critical factors influencing the underestimation of hearing loss predicted by the ISO 1999 predicting model.

To analyze factors influencing the underestimation of noise-induced permanent threshold shift (NIPTS) among manufacturing workers, providing baseline data for revising noise exposure standard. A cross-sectional study was designed with 2702 noise-exposed workers from 35 enterprises from 10 industries. Personal noise exposure level(LAeq,8h) and noise kurtosis level were determined by a noise dosimeter. Questionnaires and hearing loss tests were performed for each subject. The predicted NIPTS was calculated using the ISO 1999:2013 model for each participant, and the actual measured NIPTS was corrected for age and sex. The factors influencing the underestimation of NIPTS were investigated. The predicted NIPTS at each test frequency (0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, or 6kHz) and mean NIPTS at 2, 3, 4, and 6kHz (NIPTS2346) using the ISO 1999:2013 model were significantly lower than their corresponding measured NIPTS, respectively (P < 0.001). The ISO model significantly underestimated the NIPTS2346 by 12.36 dB HL. The multiple linear regression analysis showed that noise exposure level, exposure duration, age, and kurtosis could affect the degree of underestimation of NIPTS2346. The generalized additive model (GAM) with (penalized) spline components showed nonlinear relationships between critical factors (age, exposure duration, noise level, and kurtosis) and the underestimated NIPTS2346.The underestimated NIPTS2346 decreased with an increase in exposure duration (especially over ten years). There was no apparent trend in the underestimated NIPTS2346 with age. The underestimated NIPTS2346 decreased with the increased noise level [especially > 90 dB(A)]. The underestimated NIPTS2346 increased with an increase in noise kurtosis after adjusting for the noise exposure level and exposure duration and ultimately exhibiting a linear regression relationship. The ISO 1999 predicting model significantly underestimated the noise-induced hearing loss among manufacturing workers. The degree of underestimation became more significant at the noise exposure condition of fewer than ten years, less than 90 dB(A), and higher kurtosis levels. It is necessary to apply kurtosis to adjust the underestimation of hearing loss and consider the applying condition of noise energy metrics when using the ISO predicting model.

Distribution and transfer rules of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soil-wheat ecosystems in China.

The translocation and accumulation patterns of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the soil-crop system have important implications for the fate of PAHs and human health. This study summarized the concentrations of 16 priority PAHs in the soils and various parts of mature winter wheat in China, sourced from a screening of previous literature in English and Chinese databases. The study analyzes the distribution characteristics, transfer patterns, and human health risks of PAHs in sites studied in Shaanxi, Henan, and Shandong provinces. The results showed that the concentrations of Σ16 PAHs in the rhizosphere soil of wheat ranged from 10.30 to 893.68 ng/g, in descending order of Shaanxi > Henan > average > Shandong. In sites with mild to moderate contamination (200 < Σ16 PAHs < 600 ng/g; i.e., Henan and Shaanxi), the concentration of Σ16 PAHs in the roots was higher than that in the stems or the grains, while in contamination-free sites (Σ16 PAHs < 200 ng/g; i.e., Shandong), the highest concentration of Σ16 PAHs was found in the stems. Generally, the concentrations of PAHs increased in the order of roots-stems-grains. The predominant PAHs in each part of wheat were 2- or 3-ring compounds, with five- or six-ring PAHs being more prevalent in wheat from Shanghe, Shandong. The bioaccumulation factors of different wheat parts from Shaanxi and Henan were consistently smaller than 1, and low- and medium-ring (2-4 rings) PAHs had bigger bioconcentration factors than high-ring (5-6 rings) PAHs. However, the accumulation of PAHs in the aboveground parts of wheat was larger than that in the underground parts of the Shandong sites. The linear regression relationship between the octanol-water partition coefficient and root concentration factor (RCF) of PAHs reflected that low and medium-ring PAHs were more easily absorbed by wheat roots than high-ring PAHs in Shaanxi and Henan. Our assessment of the health risks of oral wheat intake in adults and children by the incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) model found a potential carcinogenic risk for both age groups in each province, with higher risks in adults than in children.
