Economic Fundamentals and Real Exchange Rate in African Oil Producing Countries: Evidence from Asymmetric Cointegration

The role of exchange rates is very important in the international market and the variability of exchange rates both in the case of appreciation or depreciation is directly connected with the economic performance of a country. Exchange rate variations in oil-producing countries in Africa have been too high resulting in volatilities due to domestic and foreign shocks. High volatility of exchange rate may translate into reduction of trade flows, foreign direct investment, and instability in both interest rates and inflation rates. Several studies on the relationship between economic fundamentals and exchange rates focused more on Africa or country-specific with limited focus on African oil-producing countries using asymmetric cointegration. Therefore, this study examines the relationship between some economic fundamentals and real exchange rates in oil-producing countries in Africa. The dynamics panel non-linear autoregressive distributed lag and linear autoregressive distributed lag were used to investigate the relationship between economic fundamentals and real exchange rate (RER). The NARDL result shows evidence that there exists both short and long-run asymmetric relationship between economic fundamentals and RER. The study recommended that policymakers in these countries pay more attention to their macroeconomic policies to reduce the production and transaction costs of foreign direct investment (FDI).

The Asymmetric Effects of Exchange Rate Volatility on Domestic Investment in Asia

ABSTRACT: Exchange rate volatility is said to affect domestic investment in either direction. An increase in exchange rate volatility can affect domestic investment negatively since risks are higher, mostly due to volatile prices that are the results of exchange rate volatility. Most previous studies assumed that the response is symmetric. However, one study recently demonstrated that the effects of exchange rate volatility on domestic investment could be asymmetric. We add to this new asymmetry literature by assessing the short-run and long-run effects of exchange rate volatility on domestic investment in eight Asian countries. The linear Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach of Pesaran et al. (2001) is used to estimate the symmetric effects of exchange rate volatility on investment. We then follow Shin et al.’s (2014) approach of asymmetric cointegration and error-correction modelling to estimate asymmetric effects of exchange rate volatility on investment. The advantage of using both the approaches is that the variables could be a combination of I(0) and I(1), ruling out pre-unit root testing since these are the properties of almost all macroeconomic variables. Another advantage is that both approaches yield short-run and long-run results in one step. These advanced methods are applied to data from Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. We find that when a traditional linear and symmetric ARDL investment model was estimated for each of the eight countries in our sample, exchange rate volatility had a significant short-run effects on domestic investment in six countries. The short-run effects lasted into significant long-run effects only in the cases for Malaysia and Thailand. However, when a nonlinear model was estimated, the short-run asymmetric effects of volatility were found in all the eight countries. The short-run effects lasted into the long run only for Hong Kong, Indonesia, and Thailand. Clearly, more significant effects of exchange rate volatility were established by estimating a nonlinear model which must be attributed to the nonlinear adjustment of exchange rate volatility. These findings provide policy guidelines to investors in these countries as to how and in which direction exchange rate uncertainty will affect their investment decisions. They can then hedge against uncertain exchange rate volatility and maintain a stable investment environment.

Effects of real effective exchange rate volatility on export earnings in Ethiopia: Symmetric and asymmetric effect analysis

The exchange rate is one of the key monetary policy instruments used to dictate the economy. However, the effect of exchange rate volatility on macroeconomic outcomes has been a subject of debate in previous research. Thus, this study examined the effects of real effective exchange rate (REER) volatility on Ethiopia's export earnings using quarterly data covering 2007 to 2021. The GARCH model is employed to estimate the volatility of the real effective exchange rate, and its effect is examined at the aggregate and disaggregate levels. Disaggregation is made at commodity and partner country levels. Besides these, the study also examined the symmetric and asymmetric effects of exchange rate volatility on the three categories of export earnings. To estimate the effects, both the linear autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) and nonlinear ARDL (NARDL) models are employed. The short-run ARDL result shows that the real effective exchange rate and its volatility affect export earnings only in a few cases. Real effective exchange rate appreciation is significant and reduces total export earnings and export earnings from vegetables, meat, and oilseed-related products. Similarly, exchange rate volatility reduces total export earnings and earnings from coffee, vegetables, and meat-related products. At the aggregate level, the NARDL result shows that exchange rate volatility has an asymmetric effect on total export earnings. Positive volatility reduces total export earnings, while negative volatility is not significant. At the commodity level, volatility also has an asymmetric effect on earnings from coffee and meat exports in the short run. However, in the long run, there is no asymmetric effect of exchange rate volatility on total and commodity-level export earnings. In terms of the country of destination, there is no strong evidence of the effect of real effective exchange rate appreciation and its volatility on export earnings. Thus, policies that stabilize the volatility of the exchange rate are needed in Ethiopia in order to enhance export earnings.

The role of the tourism sector in creating direct employment in Mexico: evidence from linear and nonlinear ARDL frameworks

This paper analyzes the role of the tourism sector in creating direct employment in Mexico by measuring the output elasticity of tourism employment from both linear and nonlinear perspectives. Although using such elasticity is a common practice for calculating the impact of economic growth on employment, it has been neglected in the context of the tourism labor market. Using Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) and Nonlinear Autoregressive Distributed Lag (NARDL) models, this study analyzes the impact of both the quarterly indicator of tourism gross domestic product (GDP) and the multilateral real exchange rate on tourism employment from the first quarter of 2006 to the first quarter of 2021. The results of the linear models show that tourism employment is elastic to variations in tourism GDP. Conversely, the NARDL model illustrates that tourism employment is inelastic to both positive and negative changes in tourism GDP. However, the NARDL model also shows that tourism employment is resilient to the negative phases of growth in the sector, as it grows more during the expansive episodes than it is reduced during the contractive phases. Meanwhile, the models including the multilateral real exchange rate show that tourism employment positively responds to the depreciation of the Mexican peso.

Does Renewable Energy Transition in the USA and China Overcome Environmental Degradation?

The use of fossil energy highly contributes to the CO2 emissions. Compared to other countries, China and the USA were responsible for approximately half of the global CO2 emissions in 2022. The SDG7 agenda, which aims to preserve the use of renewable energy, has made people aware of the need to switch from fossil-based to renewable energy sources by 2030. Thus, this paper aims to analyze the implications of fossil and renewable energy consumption on environmental degradation in the USA and China. This study uses the linear and nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model to examine the cointegration of the fossil and renewable energy toward the CO2 emissions from 1985 to 2021. The estimation results for USA using linear ARDL shows that fossil energy lead to higher CO2 emissions, meanwhile renewable energy reduces the CO2 emissions. Similar finding in the nonlinear ARDL, most of the models for China and the USA found significant impact of renewable energy consumption, where higher renewable energy transition contributes in lowering environmental degradation. This provide justification for policymakers in both countries to continue their efforts in renewable energy transition to archive the SDG7 agenda in 2030.

Evaluating the influence of green growth, institutional quality and financial inclusion on financial stability: evidence by sustainable finance theory.

Financial stability is essential for economic growth because it fosters confidence and trust and promotes investment in green development. However, it is a dilemma for the world economies to create an equilibrium between financial stability and environmental sustainability. In the extent of these challenges, the present study aims at grabbing the link of financial inclusion to attain financial stability. Further, the present study investigates the association of institutional quality, renewable energy, green growth, environmental sustainability, and financial inclusion with financial stability. Two basic econometric models are applied that focused on the basic and interaction term outcomes. In addition, principal component analysis (PCA) is analyzed to design an index for five proxies of financial inclusion. Additionally, the research inspected the interaction term of institutional quality and financial inclusion (FIN*INSQ) and determined the multiplied impact on financial stability in a separate model. This research employed the linear autoregressive distributed lag approach from 1990 to 2020 for long- and short-term dynamics. Theoretically, the research supports the sustainable finance and financial development theory. Hence, results showed that financial inclusion and institutional quality are positively associated with financial stability, while green growth, environmental sustainability, and renewable energy mechanisms are achieved through financial stability. Following our findings, the government should establish consistency between financial development and economic policies to maintain financial instability and ensure financial soundness. Furthermore, countries require viable financial institutions prioritizing green growth and institutional quality to achieve financial stability and long-term development.

Does external debt drive inflation in Sudan: evidence from symmetric and asymmetric ARDL approaches

PurposeThis study aims to examine the symmetric and asymmetric impact of external debt on inflation in Sudan from 1970 to 2020 within a multivariate framework by including money supply and the nominal effective exchange rate as additional inflation determinants.Design/methodology/approachThe authors utilize an Auto Regressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) model to examine the symmetric impact of external debt on inflation, while the asymmetric impact is examined using a Nonlinear ARDL (NARDL) model. The existence of a long-run relationship between inflation and external debt is tested using the bounds-testing approach to cointegration, and a vector error-correction model is estimated to determine the short parameters of equilibrium dynamics.FindingsThe linear ARDL model results show that external debt has no statistically significant impact on inflation in the long run. On the contrary, the results of the NARDL model show that positive and negative external debt shocks statistically affect inflation in the long run. The estimated long-run elasticity coefficients of the linear and nonlinear ARDL models reveal that the domestic money supply has a statistically significant positive impact on inflation. In contrast, the nominal effective exchange rate has a statistically significant negative impact on inflation.Practical implicationsThe reliance on symmetric analysis may not be sufficient to uncover the existence of a linkage between external debt and inflation. Proper external debt management is crucial to control inflation rates in Sudan.Originality/valueTo date, no empirical study has assessed the external debt-inflation nexus and its potential asymmetry in Sudan, and the current study aims to fill this gap in the literature.

Exploring the asymmetric effect of remittance inflows on gold import demand: Evidence from a large gold-consuming and remittance-receiving country

The focus of this research is to look at how remittance inflows affect gold imports in India for the period from 1980 to 2020. The study uses both the linear (symmetric) autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model of Pesaran et al. (2001) and the non-linear (asymmetric) autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) model of Shin et al. (2014) to assess the symmetric and asymmetric impact of remittance inflows on gold imports. The key advantage of the NARDL model relies on its ability to simultaneously capture the short run and long run asymmetries through the positive and negative partial sum decompositions of changes in the independent variable(s). The results of linear ARDL model reveal that remittance inflows positively and significantly affect the gold imports in the long run, although negatively and significantly in the short run. The findings of NARDL model, on the other hand, show that there is significant asymmetric impact of remittance inflows upon the gold imports over the study period. The results confirm that whereas an increase in remittance inflows leads to a considerable increase in gold imports, a reduction in remittance inflows has no substantial impact in the long run. Another notable outcome is that, while a decline in gold prices boosts gold imports in the short run, both an increase and a decrease in gold prices enhance gold imports in the long run. Concerning the results of our study, it is suggested that more efficient channelization of remittance revenues and adoption of non-price measures may be deemed effective to curb the gold imports, which can contribute to reduce unfavourable trade balance.

Does the crime rate respond symmetrically or asymmetrically to changes in governance quality and macroeconomic variables? The application of linear and non-linear ARDL

PurposeSocioeconomic development needs quality governance to provide and protect property rights and other economic means. In this regard, the current study examines the symmetric and asymmetric effect of composite governance index, unemployment rate (UR) and consumer price index on the crime rate (CR) in Pakistan.Design/methodology/approachThe current study uses time series data (1996–2020) on CR, composite governance index, UR and consumer price index. In this study, the authors first constructed a composite governance index from six governance indicators using the principal component analysis (PCA) method. After that, the short-run and long-run symmetric and asymmetric effects were estimated through linear and non-linear autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) models, respectively.FindingsThe authors found short-run and long-run symmetric and asymmetric effects of governance, unemployment and consumer prices (CPI) on the CR in Pakistan. For asymmetric effects, the findings show that high-quality governance diminishes and poor governance accelerates committed crimes in Pakistan. Interestingly, the asymmetric unemployment effect suggests that criminal behavior diminishes when people find job opportunities and do not adopt criminal behavior even if people lose employment. In other words, if unemployment decreases CR will fall, and when unemployment increases, the CR may not increase. Military Expenditure and Unemployment in South Africa: Evidence from Linear and Nonlinear ARDL with and without Structural Break

This study examined the symmetric and asymmetric effects of military expenditure on the unemployment rate in South Africa using quarterly data from 1994Q1 and 2019Q4. The study adopted the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) and nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (NARDL) frameworks and accounted for structural breaks in the military expenditure-unemployment nexus. The ARDL results revealed that military spending reduces unemployment in the long run for models with and without structural break but aggravates it in the short-run without a structural break. For the nonlinear ARDL results, irrespective of whether we account for a structural break or not, a positive change in military spending increases unemployment while a negative change in military spending reduces unemployment, especially in the long run. This implies that an increase in military spending is detrimental to unemployment reduction, whereas a reduction in military spending would reduce unemployment. Thus, the policy implication of the study is that the government need to prioritise other forms of spending over military spending in its drive to abate unemployment.

The symmetric and asymmetric impacts of external debt on economic growth in Tunisia: evidence from linear and nonlinear ARDL models.

This paper aims to empirically examine the symmetric and asymmetric impact of external debt on economic growth in Tunisia between 1965 and 2019. The empirical methodology used is based on the one hand on the linear autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model of Pesaran et al. (Econ Soc Monogr 31:371-413. 10.1371/journal.pone.0184474, 2001), and on the other hand, on the nonlinear ARDL (NARDL) model of Shin et al. (Nucleic Acids Res 42(11):90. 10.1038/s41477-021-00976-0, 2014). The results show that the asymmetry assumption is valid for the long term. In addition, the empirical analysis shows a negative impact of positive external debt variation and a positive impact of negative external debt variation. This suggests that economic growth is more sensitive and favorable to decreases than to increases in external debt, which in turn means that maintaining debt at relatively high levels is detrimental to Tunisian economic growth.

Linear and nonlinear asymmetric relationship in crude oil, gold, stock market and exchange rates: An evidence from the UAE

This study examines dynamic relationship among the macroeconomic variables represented by the international oil and gold prices, exchange rates and stock market index in the context of UAE's economy. The UAE is known as a major player in trading both oil and gold in the global market. Daily data for the period ranging from 19th March 2015 to 8th October 2022 is used for this study. Autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model is applied in both linear and non-linear specifications to explore co-movement among the variables under study. While the estimated parameters from linear ARDL model indicate the absence of any co-integration among gold, oil and stock market, the non-linear ARDL model however, does indicate and validate the presence of long-run asymmetric relation among these markets. Exchange rates play a significant role both in the short as well as in the long run. Besides, the study observes that negative shocks do have different scale of impact than the positive ones. Therefore, the present study concludes that a non-linear approach is best suited to understand the dynamics of these markets. The findings of this study have important implications for policy makers and other stakeholders as they must ensure that the direction of shocks is taken into consideration before policy prescriptions or any other investment decisions.

Volatility, Volume, and FX Policy Uncertainty: Evidence from Seoul and Shanghai Chinese-Korean Direct Exchange Rate Market

Purpose – This paper empirically analyzed the effect of the FX policy uncertainty (FX EPU) of Korea and the trading volume in the direct Korean won/Chinese yuan (KRW-RMB) exchange market agreed on in June 2014 on the volatility of the won/yuan exchange rate. Design/Methodology/Approach – In this paper, we first collected monthly data on the trading volume in the direct Korean won/Chinese yuan (KRW-RMB) exchange market from July 2016 to March 2021. We adopted the linear autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) approach proposed by Pesaran et al. (2001) to study the impact of the FX EPU of Korea and the trading volume on the volatility of the won/yuan exchange rate. This paper uses direct Korean won/Chinese yuan (KRW-RMB) exchange market data for the first time. Findings – The main findings are as follows. First, the empirical results suggest that an increase in trading volume decreases short-run exchange rate volatility, while an increase in FX EPU increases short-run exchange rate volatility. Second, we also find that the long-run effects of trading volume are negative, while the effects of FX EPU are not. Third, the effects on volatility of trading volume and FX EPU are negative or positive in both simultaneous and dynamic relationships, which is consistent with the mixture distribution hypothesis. Research Implications – The estimation result of the ARDL model shows the long- and short-run effects of volume and FX EPU on volatility. We provide new empirical evidence for the way in which financial markets process information.

Dynamic effect of exchange rate depreciation on carbon emission in the Mediterranean basin: fresh insights from linear and non-linear ARDL approaches

The key objective of this study is to explore the relationship between economic growth, renewable and non-renewable energy consumption, exchange rate variation, and environmental pollution by carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in 19 coastline Mediterranean countries over the period 1995-2020. We suggest the application of two different approaches, namely, the symmetric autoregressive-distributed lag (ARDL) and the non-linear ARDL (NARDL) model. These methods distinguished from traditional ones by the fact that they assess both the long and short run dynamics among variables. More importantly, the NARDL method is the only technique enabling us to test the asymmetric effects of a shock in independent variables on dependent ones. Our results indicate that the long-term pollution is positively correlated with exchange rate for developed countries and negatively correlated for developing ones. Since environmental degradation in developing countries is more vulnerable to any fluctuation in exchange rate, we suggest that policymakers in Mediterranean developing countries must pay more attention to exchange rate variation as well as boosting renewable energy consumption in order to decrease CO2 emissions.

Insights from BRICS-T economies on the impact of human capital and renewable electricity consumption on environmental quality

This paper evaluates the impact of electricity consumption from renewable and nonrenewable sources on the load capacity factor for BRICS-T nations using data from 1990 to 2018. The paper used linear and nonlinear autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) approaches to explore these associations. The results of the Westerlund co-integration show long-run co-integration between load capacity factor and the independent variables. The results show that renewable electricity energy and human capital contribute to the sustainability of the environment, while electricity consumption, economic growth, and industrialization impede environmental sustainability. Similarly, the nonlinear effect of renewable electricity energy on LCF shows interesting findings. The positive (negative) shift in renewable electricity energy increases ecological sustainability in the BRICS-T nations. Furthermore, the Dumitrescu Hurlin panel causality gives credence to both linear and nonlinear ARDL results. The study suggests policy recommendations based on these results.

Outward foreign direct investment and the economic growth of Central, East and Southeast Europe: an asymmetric approach

PurposePrevious studies have mostly estimated there to be a symmetric effect in the Foreign direct investment (FDI) inflow regarding the economic growth of Central, East and Southeast European (CESEE) countries. However, for the CESEE countries, as well as for the majority of countries around the world, there has been no study that has estimated the symmetric and asymmetric effect of outward FDI on economic growth. The main objective of this study is to estimate whether the relation between outward FDI and economic growth in CESEE countries is symmetric or asymmetric.Design/methodology/approachThis study includes a sample based on eight CESEE countries. The authors used the linear and non-linear autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model and annual data for the period from 1990 to 2020.FindingsIn the long run, in the linear ARDL model, a significant symmetrical effect due to OFDI on the economic growth of Romania and Slovenia was found, while in the non-linear ARDL model, a significant asymmetric effect of OFDI on the economic growth of Bulgaria, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovenia and Slovakia was found. In six out of the eight countries, asymmetry was found while symmetry was found in the other two. Poorer symmetry results can be ascribed to the lack of linear model neglecting the asymmetric behaviour of the positive and negative change decomposition as part of the OFDI movement, which leads to the wrong conclusion.Originality/valueThis is the first study to evaluate the asymmetric effect of outward FDI on the economic growth of eight CESEE countries.

Resource productivity and environmental degradation in EU-27 countries: context of material footprint

This study explores the relationship between the resource productivity and environmental degradation in European Union-27 countries. This study tests this relationship in context of high, moderate, and low material footprint sub-samples; these samples are formed utilizing the expectation–maximization machine learning algorithm. Using the panel data set of EU-27 countries from 2000 to 2020, linear and non-linear autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) are applied for the symmetric and asymmetric evidence and to test environmental Kuznets curve (EKC), linear ARDL with the quadratic function is included. Results of the symmetric relationship find evidence of resource productivity’s impact on the environmental degradation. In full sample of EU-27, both symmetric and asymmetric methods show that the short run and long run increase of resource productivity lower the environmental degradation. Only long run asymmetric relationship in high material footprint subsamples supports that the resource productivity controls environmental degradation. Results of moderate material footprint sub-sample are mixed. However, low material footprint countries show that resource productivity in long run controls the environmental degradation in symmetry and only positive resource controls productivity in short run in asymmetric relationship. The reason for mixed results is the quadratic nature of sub-samples. EKC hypothesis is validated in moderate and low material footprint sub-samples. This research has many policy implications.

The impact of exchange rate changes on the trade balance: Evidence from Saudi Arabia vs her major trading partners

This study aims to analyse the short- and long-term effects of real exchange rate changes on the bilateral trade balance between Saudi Arabia and its major trading partners. The study used the aggregated and disaggregated panel data for the analysis. The autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model in error correction is used to analyse the short and long-term relationship between exchange rate and trade balance. It was discovered that the real exchange rate (RER) had no appreciable impact on the trade balance over the long run using the panel data linear ARDL model. The first leg of RER is determined to have a very negative short-term impact on the trade balance. However, the non-linear ARDL model, which took into account non-linear trade balance adjustments in reaction to exchange rate fluctuations, demonstrated a significant and adverse long-term link between the two variables. It shows that depreciation leads to the deterioration of the trade balance. Finally, the study extends the analysis to disaggregated data country-wise. The results of the linear ARDL model revealed that 3 out of 13 cases have significantly short-term relationships. Still, it is observed that no specific short-term patterns are in line with the J-curve hypothesis. The investigation discovered evidence for the J-Curve and the new definition of the J-curve using the non-linear ARDL model in three of the 13 cases. The study concluded that Saudi Arabia must not rely on devaluation as a policy instrument to improve its trade balance. It should maintain its fixed exchange rate for extended periods.

The Interaction between Policy Mix in Lebanon: Applications of the Nonlinear and Linear ARDL Models

This study investigates the interaction between fiscal and monetary policies in Lebanon over the period 2001 to 2019 by using Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) and the Nonlinear Autoregressive Distributed Lag (NARDL) model introduced by Pesaran et al. (2001) and Shin et al. (2014) respectively in order to examine simultaneously the short- and long-run symmetric and possible asymmetric interactions between fiscal and monetary tools in Lebanon. The fiscal and monetary rules employed in this study are inspired from Leeper (1991, 2016 and 2018). Based on NARDL and ARDL fiscal and monetary reaction functions, Lebanese fiscal authority acts independently indicating a fiscal dominance. This situation obliged the BDL to neglect its main goal of maintaining price stability in order to support fiscal deficit by creating seigniorage revenue to balance the government accounts which in turns has led to an acceleration of inflation rates even in case of monetary contraction. The fiscal responsiveness to changes in public debt is extremely weak in Lebanon, and even is negative, and this is due to the high levels of public debt (174.3% of GDP in 2019). The empirical results indicate also that while the linear approach provides evidences of the interaction between the fiscal and monetary policies, the nonlinear approach provides more important evidences to determine in which direction this cooperation or conflict occurs between policy mix. Moreover, this paper provides new evidences of the absence of fiscal and monetary discipline rules followed by the fiscal and monetary authorities, which indicates that the policymakers in Lebanon were managing the financial and monetary policies without any specific plan or program and without any future vision or even a framework that allows these policies to be evaluated.
