Corrective saccades in acute vestibular neuritis: studying the role of prediction with automated passively induced head impulses.

When the demands for visual stabilization during head rotations overwhelm the ability of the vestibuloocular reflex (VOR) to produce compensatory eye movements, the brain produces corrective saccades that bring gaze toward the fixation target, even without visual cues (covert saccades). What triggers covert saccades and what might be the role of prediction in their generation are unknown. We studied 14 subjects with acute vestibular neuritis. To minimize variability of the stimulus, head impulses were imposed with a motorized torque generator with the subject on a bite bar. Predictable and unpredictable (timing, amplitude, direction) stimuli were compared. Distributions of covert corrective saccade latencies were analyzed with a "LATER" (linear approach to threshold with ergodic rate) approach. On the affected side, VOR gain was higher (0.47 ± 0.28 vs. 0.39 ± 0.22, P ≪ 0.001) with predictable than unpredictable head impulses, and gaze error at the end of the head movement was less (5.4 ± 3.3° vs. 6.9 ± 3.3°, P ≪ 0.001). Analyzing trials with covert saccades, gaze error at saccade end was significantly less with predictable than unpredictable head impulses (4.2 ± 2.8° vs. 5.5 ± 3.2°, P ≪ 0.001). Furthermore, covert corrective saccades occurred earlier with predictable than unpredictable head impulses (140 ± 37 vs. 153 ± 37 ms, P ≪ 0.001). Using a LATER analysis with reciprobit plots, we were able to divide covert corrective saccades into two classes, early and late, with a break point in the range of 88-98 ms. We hypothesized two rise-to-threshold decision mechanisms for triggering early and late covert corrective saccades, with the first being most engaged when stimuli are predictable.NEW & NOTEWORTHY We successfully used a LATER (linear approach to threshold with ergodic rate) analysis of the latencies of corrective saccades in patients with acute vestibular neuritis. We found two types of covert saccades: early (<90 ms) and late (>90 ms) covert saccades. Predictability led to an increase in VOR gain and a decrease in saccade latency.

Modelling Prosaccade Latencies across Multiple Decision-Making Tasks

Oculomotor decision making can be investigated by a simple step task, where a person decides whether a target has jumped to the left or the right. More complex tasks include the countermanding task (look at the jumped target, except when a subsequent signal instructs you not to) and the Wheeless task (where the jumped target sometimes then quickly jumps to a new location). Different instantiations of the LATER (Linear Approach to Threshold with Ergodic Rate) model have been shown to explain the saccadic latency data arising from these tasks, despite it being almost inconceivable that completely separate decision-making mechanisms exist for each. However, these models have an identical construction with regards to predicting prosaccadic responses (all step task trials, and control trials in countermanding and Wheeless tasks, where no countermanding signal is given or when the target does not make a second jump). We measured saccadic latencies for 23 human observers each performing the three tasks, and modelled prosaccade latencies with LATER to see if model parameters were usefully preserved across tasks. We found no significant difference in reaction times and model parameters between the step and Wheeless tasks (mean 175 and 177 ms, respectively; standard deviation, SD 22 and 24 ms). In contrast, we identified prolonged latencies in the countermanding tasks (236 ms; SD 37 ms) explained by a slower rise and an elevated threshold of the decision making signal, suggesting elevated participant caution. Our findings support the idea that common machinery exists for oculomotor decision-making, which can be flexibly deployed depending upon task demands.

Peer Presence Effects on Eye Movements and Attentional Performance.

“Social facilitation” refers to the enhancement or impairment of performance engendered by the mere presence of others. It has been demonstrated for a diversity of behaviors. This study assessed whether it also concerns attention and eye movements and if yes, which decision-making mechanisms it affects. Human volunteers were tested in three different tasks (saccades, visual search, and continuous performance) either alone or in the presence of a familiar peer. The results failed to reveal any significant peer influence on the visual search and continuous performance tasks. For saccades, by contrast, they showed a negative or positive peer influence depending on the complexity of the testing protocol. Pro-and anti-saccades were both inhibited when pseudorandomly mixed, and both facilitated when performed separately. Peer presence impaired or improved reaction times, i.e., the speed to initiate the saccade, as well as peak velocity, i.e., the driving force moving the eye toward the target. Effect sizes were large, with Cohen’s d-values ranging for reaction times (RTs) from 0.50 to 0.95. Analyzing RT distributions using the LATER (Linear Approach to Threshold with Ergodic Rate) model revealed that social inhibition of pro- and anti-saccades in the complex protocol was associated with a significant increase in the rate of rise. The present demonstration that the simple presence of a familiar peer can inhibit or facilitate saccades depending on task difficulty strengthens a growing body of evidence showing social modulations of eye movements and attention processes. The present lack of effect on visual search and continuous performance tasks contrasts with peer presence effects reported earlier using similar tasks, and future studies are needed to determine whether it is due to an intermediate level of difficulty maximizing individual variability. Together with an earlier study of the social inhibition of anti-saccades also using the LATER model, which showed an increase of the threshold, the present increase of the rate of rise suggests that peer presence can influence both the top-down and bottom-up attention-related processes guiding the decision to move the eyes.

A Novel Hierarchical LATER Process Model: Evaluating Latent Sources of Variation in Reaction Times of Adult Daily Smokers.

Reaction time data from cognitive tasks continue to be a key way to assess decision-making in various contexts to better understand addiction. The goal of this paper is twofold: to introduce a nuanced modeling approach for reaction time data and to demonstrate the novel insights it can provide into the decision processes of nicotine-dependent individuals in different contexts. We focus on the Linear Approach to Threshold with Ergodic Rate (LATER) model, which is a cognitive process model that describes reaction time data in terms of two distinct aspects of cognitive functioning: speed of information accumulation (“accretion”) and threshold amount of information needed prior to execution (“caution”). We introduce a novel hierarchical extension to the LATER model to simultaneously account for differences across persons and experimental conditions, both in the accretion and caution parameters. This approach allows for the inclusion of person-specific predictor variables to explain between-person variation in terms of accretion and caution together with condition-specific predictors to model experimental condition manipulations. To highlight the usefulness of this model, we analyze reaction time data from a study on adult daily cigarette smokers. Participants performed a monetary incentivized Go/No-Go task during two testing sessions, once while following their typical smoking patterns and again following 12 h of verified smoking abstinence. Our main results suggest that regardless of trial type, smokers in a period of abstinence have faster accretion rates, and lower caution thresholds relative to smoking as usual.

Sleep deprivation enhances inter-stimulus interval effect on vigilant attention performance.

Sleep deprivation significantly reduces the ability to maintain a consistent alertness level and impairs vigilant attention. Previous studies have shown that longer inter-stimulus interval (ISI) are associated with faster reaction times (RTs) on the Psychomotor Vigilance Test (PVT). However, whether and how sleep deprivation interacts with this ISI effect remains unclear. N = 70 healthy adults (age range 20-50 years, 41 males) participated in a 5-day and 4-night in-laboratory controlled sleep deprivation study, including N = 54 in the experimental group with one night of total sleep deprivation and N = 16 in the control group without sleep loss. All participants completed a neurobehavioral test battery every 2 hours while awake, including a 10-minute standard PVT (PVT-S, N = 1626) and a 3-minute brief PVT (PVT-B, N = 1622). The linear approach to threshold with ergodic rate (LATER) model was used to fit the RT data. RT decreased significantly with longer ISI on the PVT-S and PVT-B. Increased ISI effect was found for both PVT-S and PVT-B during sleep deprivation compared to baseline or recovery sleep in the experimental group, whereas no differences in the ISI effect were found in the control group. The LATER model fitting indicated that changes in perceptual sensitivity rather than threshold adjustment may underlie the ISI effect. Both standard and brief PVT showed a similar ISI effect on vigilant attention performance. Sleep deprivation increased the ISI effect on both PVT-S and PVT-B, which may be due to impaired temporal resolution and time estimation after sleep loss.

0227 Sleep Deprivation Enlarges Inter-stimulus Interval Effect On Vigilant Attention

Sleep deprivation (SD) significantly impairs vigilance attention and reduces the ability to maintain a consistent alertness level. The Psychomotor Vigilance Test (PVT) is a widely used and highly sensitive vigilance task for sleep studies, which records reaction times (RT) to visual stimuli that occurs at random inter-stimulus intervals (ISI). Previous studies have shown that longer ISI facilitates faster RT on the PVT. Although the negative effects of sleep loss on PVT performance have been well documented, whether and how SD modulates the ISI effect on vigilant attention remain elusive. Here we studied this question using a large PVT data set. Seventy health adults (33.9 ± 8.8y, 41 males) participated in a 5-day and 4-night in-laboratory controlled sleep study, including n=54 in the experimental group involving 36-hour of acute total SD (TSD) followed by two nights of recovery sleep, and n=16 in the control group without SD. All participants completed a cognitive test battery every 2 hours while awake, including a 10-min standard PVT and a 3-min brief PVT (PVT-B). A total of 1766 PVT and 1622 PVT-B tests data were included. The linear approach to threshold with ergodic rate (LATER) model was used to fit the data. Reliable effects of ISI on vigilant attention were found for the PVT and PVT-B in both experimental and control groups, such that RT decreased monotonically with longer ISI. The LATER model indicated that changes in perceptual sensitivity rather than threshold adjustment may underlie this ISI effect. A larger ISI effect was found for PVT tests after TSD compared to those after baseline or recovery sleep (p<0.001), whereas no differences were found between PVT tests after baseline or recovery sleep in the SD group, nor among PVT tests on different days in the control group. Our results suggest that sleep deprivation increases the ISI effect on both standard 10-min and brief 3-min PVT, which may be due to altered perceptual sensitivity of time intervals after sleep loss. Strabismic amblyopia affects decision processes preceding saccadic response

Amblyopia is a developmental disorder of vision associated with abnormal visual stimulation during early childhood. It is known that amblyopia may affect not only spatial vision parameters but also oculomotor behavior. Several previous studies showed that increased saccadic reaction time (latency) may be present in amblyopic subjects. In our recent work, we have demonstrated that not only amblyopic but also a dominant eye may show increased saccadic latency in strabismic individuals. Since saccadic latency can be considered as a decision time, we have applied LATER (Linear Approach to Threshold with Ergodic Rate) decision model to find out how developmental impairment of visual input affects visual decision-making processes, as well as to verify whether amblyopia affects also the cortical ability to inhibit more primitive, early saccadic responses during our modified delayed saccade task. Ten subjects with strabismic amblyopia and twelve control subjects were examined. As we expected, strabismic amblyopes showed decreased rate of rise of the neural decision signal for all viewing conditions as compared to controls. In addition, the comparison between the strabismic and anisometropic groups revealed that the amblyopic eye in strabismic subjects showed decreased rate of rise of the decision signal as compared to amblyopic eye in anisometropic subjects. Although we speculated that amblyopia may reduce the ability of cortical control and favor more reflexive, early saccadic actions to occur, our findings did not confirm this hypothesis. This study provide further evidence that amblyopia is associated with cortical deficits which affect the cortical decision about saccade initiation.

Towards a unifying mechanism for cancelling movements.

For precise motor control, we must be able to not only initiate movements with appropriate timing, but also stop them. The importance of stopping tended to be overlooked in research in favour of studying movement itself, so we are still only beginning to understand the neural basis of action cancellation. However, the development of models of behaviour in a wider range of tasks, and their relation to neural recordings has provided great insight into the underlying neurophysiology. Here we focus on developments of the linear approach to threshold with ergodic rate (LATER) model, relating these to complementary neurophysiological studies. It is tempting to consider that there may be a unifying mechanism for cancelling impending decisions in many contexts and how future efforts may clarify this possibility.This article is part of the themed issue 'Movement suppression: brain mechanisms for stopping and stillness'.

LATER models of neural decision behavior in choice tasks.

Reaction time has been increasingly used over the last few decades to provide information on neural decision processes: it is a direct reflection of decision time. Saccades provide an excellent paradigm for this because many of them can be made in a very short time and the underlying neural pathways are relatively well-known. LATER (linear approach to threshold with ergodic rate) is a model originally devised to explain reaction time distributions in simple decision tasks. Recently, however it is being extended to increasingly more advanced tasks, including those with decision errors and those requiring voluntary control such as the antisaccade task and those where sequential decisions are required. The strength of this modeling approach lies in its detailed, quantitative predictions of behavior, yet LATER models still retain their conceptual simplicity that made LATER initially successful in explaining reaction times in simple decision tasks.

Dissociable effects of dopamine on learning and performance within sensorimotor striatum

Striatal dopamine is an important modulator of current behavior, as seen in the rapid and dramatic effects of dopamine replacement therapy in Parkinson disease (PD). Yet there is also extensive evidence that dopamine acts as a learning signal, modulating synaptic plasticity within striatum to affect future behavior. Disentangling these “performance” and “learning” functions is important for designing effective, long-term PD treatments. We conducted a series of unilateral drug manipulations and dopamine terminal lesions in the dorsolateral striatum of rats highly trained to perform brief instructed head/neck movements (two-alternative forced choice task). Reaction times and accuracy were measured longitudinally to determine if task behavior changed immediately, progressed over time, and/or persisted after drug withdrawal. Enhanced dopamine signaling with amphetamine caused an immediate, nonprogressive, and bilateral decrease in reaction times (RT). The altered RT distributions were consistent with reduced distance to threshold in the linear approach to threshold with ergodic rate (LATER) model of decision-making. Conversely, the dopamine antagonist flupenthixol caused experience-dependent, persistent changes in RT and accuracy indicative of a “learning” effect. These RT distributions were consistent with a slowed rate of approach to decision threshold. Our results show that dopaminergic signaling makes dissociable contributions to current and future behavior even within a single striatal subregion, and provide important clues for both models of normal decision-making and the design of novel drug therapies in PD.

Revisiting corrective saccades: Role of visual feedback

To clarify the role of visual feedback in the generation of corrective movements after inaccurate primary saccades, we used a visually-triggered saccade task in which we varied how long the target was visible. The target was on for only 100ms (OFF100ms), on until the start of the primary saccade (OFFonset) or on for 2s (ON). We found that the tolerance for the post-saccadic error was small (-2%) with a visual signal (ON) but greater (-6%) without visual feedback (OFF100ms). Saccades with an error of -10%, however, were likely to be followed by corrective saccades regardless of whether or not visual feedback was present. Corrective saccades were generally generated earlier when visual error information was available; their latency was related to the size of the error. The LATER (Linear Approach to Threshold with Ergodic Rate) model analysis also showed a comparable small population of short latency corrective saccades irrespective of the target visibility. Finally, we found, in the absence of visual feedback, the accuracy of corrective saccades across subjects was related to the latency of the primary saccade. Our findings provide new insights into the mechanisms underlying the programming of corrective saccades: (1) the preparation of corrective saccades begins along with the preparation of the primary saccades, (2) the accuracy of corrective saccades depends on the reaction time of the primary saccades and (3) if visual feedback is available after the initiation of the primary saccade, the prepared correction can be updated.

Predicting the timing of wrong decisions with LATER

Response time, or latency, is increasingly being used to provide information about neural decision processes. LATER (Linear Approach to Threshold with Ergodic Rate) is a quasi-Bayesian model of decision-making, with the additional feature that it introduces a degree of gratuitous randomisation into the decision process. It has had some success in predicting latencies under various conditions, but has not specifically been applied to an equally important aspect of decision-making, namely errors: a complete model of decision-making should not only account for latency distributions of correct decisions but also of wrong ones. We therefore used a decision task that generates large numbers of errors: subjects are told to look at suddenly appearing targets of one colour, but not another. We found that subjects' faster responses are as likely to be correct as wrong, but eventually the latency distributions diverge, with errors becoming infrequent. It seems that colour information, arriving after a delay, results both in cancellation of the developing response to the mere existence of the target and in delayed initiation of the correct response. A simple model, using LATER units in a similar way to one that has previously successfully modelled countermanding, accurately predicts latency distributions and proportions of all responses, whether correct or incorrect, demonstrating that the LATER model can indeed account for errors as well as correct responses.

Dual LATER-unit model predicts saccadic reaction time distributions in gap, step and appearance tasks

Saccadic latencies have long been known to depend on the relative timing of the appearance of the new target, and offset of the original fixation target. Previous studies have tended to conclude that two separate effects are at work, one equivalent to competitive inhibition from the fixation target, and the other due to its offset providing a warning that shortens latency. In this study, we propose a simpler explanation, based on a well-established model of reaction time, LATER (linear approach to threshold with ergodic rate), that in addition to predicting mean latencies also--more challengingly--predicts latency distributions. We show that observed distributions, using gap, step and appearance tasks under three conditions of prior probability, can be accurately predicted by using a pair of LATER units, one corresponding to fixation target offset and the other to peripheral target onset. Because fixation offset is probabilistically associated with target appearance, when the fixation unit is activated it increases the target's decision signal (that represents probability) in a fixed proportion, speeding responses. In contrast, when the fixation target remains present, the fixation unit is not activated, and responses are slower. Both these effects generate characteristic changes in the shapes of the latency distributions that can be accurately predicted by the model.

Task Switching as a Two-Stage Decision Process

Saccades represent decisions, and the study of their latency has led to a neurally plausible model of the underlying mechanisms, LATER (Linear Approach to Threshold with Ergodic Rate), that can successfully predict reaction time behavior in simple decision tasks, with fixed instructions. However, if the instructions abruptly change, we have a more complex situation, known as task switching. Psychologists' explanations of the phenomena of task switching have so far tended to be qualitative rather than quantitative, and not intended to relate particularly clearly to existing models of decision making or to likely neural implementations. Here, we investigated task switching using a novel saccadic task: we presented the instructions by stimulus elements identical to those of the task itself, allowing us to compare decisions about instructions with decisions in the actual task. Our results support a relatively simple model consisting of two distinct LATER processes in series: the first detects the instruction, the second implements it.

Vergence target selection in rhesus monkeys: behavior and modeling

Previous studies have shown that a LATER (Linear Approach to Threshold with Ergodic Rate) race model can be used to explain saccadic target selection and latencies. The goal of the present study was to determine whether a comparable model could be applied to the underlying decision-making processes involved in target selection for transient vergence eye movements in rhesus monkeys. Luminance contrast of near and far Gabor pair stimuli were manipulated in a forced-choice paradigm to investigate their influence on vergence target selection. The distributions of responses and their latencies were evaluated by cumulative recinormal and reciprobit plots. With all targets set to 20% luminance contrast, animals showed a bias for the divergent target. Increasing luminance contrast of the near Gabor pair, while holding the far Gabor at the base contrast, resulted in increasing selection of the convergent target. This change in bias from divergent to convergent target selection correlated with decreases in convergent latency and increases in divergent latency. Monte Carlo simulations were used to estimate the internal rates of the divergent and convergent decision-making processes which, given a fixed threshold, would result in the observed distributions of vergence responses and their latencies. Statistical tests show that the LATER race model can predict observed values, and strongly suggests that competition between internal convergent and divergent target selection processes determines relative frequencies and latencies of these movements.

Influences of motor instructions on the reaction times of saccadic eye movements.

When a gap period is inserted between the fixation point extinction and the target presentation, the distribution of saccadic reaction times has two distinct peaks: one at 150-250 ms (ordinary saccades) and another at approximately 100 ms (express saccades). The distribution of saccadic reaction times can be explained by the linear approach to threshold with ergodic rate (LATER) model, in which the value of a decision signal increases linearly from a start level to initiate a saccade when the signal value reaches a threshold. We hypothesized that a gap period and/or an instruction signal can modulate the parameters of the model to determine when a saccade is initiated. Two reciprobit plots of reaction times, one for ordinary and the other for express saccades, for a task with both a gap period and visuospatial instruction, were constrained by a common infinite-time intercept, although no such constraint was observed during task performance without a visuospatial instruction. We interpreted the results that either the threshold, the start level, or the rate of increase of the decision signal of the model was switched in a bistable manner by both the visuospatial instruction and a gap period, but not by the gap period alone.
