ON DECIPHERMENT OF THE INSCRIPTIONS OF LINEAR A IN THE COMMON KARTVELIAN LANGUAGE

The object of this paper is the deciphering of Cretan Linear A (LA) inscriptions. The paper presents a brief background of the ancient population of the Peloponnese, Asia Minor and the Aegean islands before the Indo-European migrations. It is supposed that the indigenous inhabitants of this area were of non-Indo-European and non-Semitic origin, from the Proto-Kartvelian tribes. The study of the linguistic material and graphical qualities of LA, and the phonetic reading of Linear B (LB) script by M. Ventris, granted the correctness of my decipherment of LA inscriptions in the Common Kartvelian (CK).

A Linear A Text on a Clay Reel from Drama, South-East Bulgaria?

En 1996, lors des fouilles de Drama (district de Jambol, Sud-Est de la Bulgarie), on a trouve une bobine en terre cuite portant en son milieu cinq signes graves en sens inverse. Les trois premiers signes sont attribuables au lineaire A des Minoens (AB 01-51-301...); le signe A 301 limite au lineaire A exclue toute appartenance de ce texte au corpus du lineaire B. Par contre, les deux derniers signes restent problematiques. Nous ne sommes donc pas en presence d'une inscription en lineaire A classique. La trouvaille de Drama (Helladique recent III B/C ou plus tot) elargit le dossier des textes en lineaire A provenant de l'exterieur de la Mer Egee comme ceux de Samothrace et de la cote d'Asie Mineure (Troie, Milet). Les problemes epigraphiques et historiques souleves par cette decouverte sont discutes de maniere approfondie.

A Linear A Inscription from Tel Lachish (lach ZA 1)

Publication et commentaire d'une inscription en Lineaire A, incisee sur un fragment de recipient en calcaire, probablement un grand bol ou un cratere, provenant de Tel Lakish et datee d'apres le contexte stratigraphique (Niveau VI, derniere couche de la cite cananeenne, alors dominee par les pharaons de la XXe dynastie) et archeologique, du debut du XIIe s. av. J.-C.

"Someone Will Succeed in Deciphering Minoan": Cyrus H. Gordon and Minoan Linear A

After a decade of research on the interconnections between Greece, Ugarit, and Israel, with Crete as the hub, Gordon approached the decipherment of Minoan Linear A. Previous scholars had realized that Linear A was not Greek as in Linear B. Gordon stepped in to assert, controversially, that the language of Minoan Linear A was a West Semitic dialect.
