A novel fluorescent probe for formaldehyde based on hydrazone formation for real food samples detection and bioimaging

Formaldehyde (FA) is an active carbonyl structure that is widely used in people's daily life, such as preservatives and fixatives. Furthermore, formaldehyde is highly toxic and has been listed as one of the three major indoor pollutants. Therefore, the development of highly sensitive and selective fluorescent probes is of great biological importance. In this article, probe X is designed to identify formaldehyde by a light-induced electron transfer (PET) process between the naphthalimide derivative and the hydrazine group based on hydrazone formation. Moreover, the probe has good optical response and excellent linearity over a wide range of formaldehyde concentrations, ensuring that formaldehyde concentration values in real complex food samples can be quantitatively recorded. In addition, the probe can monitor the changes of formaldehyde levels in living cells with good biocompatibility and image resolution.

Light-Induced Electron Transfer in a [NiFe] Hydrogenase Opens a Photochemical Shortcut for Catalytic Dihydrogen Cleavage.

[NiFe] hydrogenases catalyze the reversible cleavage of molecular hydrogen into protons and electrons. Here, we have studied the impact of temperature and illumination on an oxygen-tolerant and thermostable [NiFe] hydrogenase by IR and EPR spectroscopy. Equilibrium mixtures of two catalytic [NiFe] states, Nia-C and Nia-SR'', were found to drastically change with temperature, indicating a thermal exchange of electrons between the [NiFe] active site and iron-sulfur clusters of the enzyme. In addition, IR and EPR experiments performed under illumination revealed an unusual photochemical response of the enzyme. Nia-SR'', a fully reduced hydride intermediate of the catalytic cycle, was found to be reversibly photoconverted into another catalytic state, Nia-L. In contrast to the well-known photolysis of the more oxidized hydride intermediate Nia-C, photoconversion of Nia-SR'' into Nia-L is an active-site redox reaction that involves light-driven electron transfer towards the enzyme's iron-sulfur clusters. Omitting the ground-state intermediate Nia-C, this direct interconversion of these two states represents a potential photochemical shortcut of the catalytic cycle that integrates multiple redox sites of the enzyme. In total, our findings reveal the non-local redistribution of electrons via thermal and photochemical reaction channels and the potential of accelerating or controlling [NiFe] hydrogenases by light.

Photosynthetic biohybrid systems for solar fuels catalysis.

Photosynthetic reaction center (RC) proteins are finely tuned molecular systems optimized for solar energy conversion. RCs effectively capture and convert sunlight with near unity quantum efficiency utilizing light-induced directional electron transfer through a series of molecular cofactors embedded within the protein core to generate a long-lived charge separated state with a useable electrochemical potential. Of current interest are new strategies that couple RC chemistry to the direct synthesis of energy-rich compounds. This Feature Article highlights recent work from our lab on RC and RC-inspired hybrid systems that capture the Sun's energy and convert it to chemical energy in the form of H2, a carbon-neutral energy source derived from water. Biohybrids made from the Photosystem I (PSI) RC are among the best photocatalytic H2-producing protein hybrids to date. Targeted self-assembly strategies that couple abiotic catalysts to PSI translate to catalyst incorporation at intrinsic PSI sites within thylakoid membranes to achieve complete solar water-splitting systems. RC-inspired biohybrids interface synthetic photosensitizers and molecular catalysts with small proteins to create photocatalytic systems and enable the spectroscopic discernment of the structural features and electron transfer processes that underpin solar-driven proton reduction. In total, these studies showcase the incredible scientific opportunities photosynthetic biohybrid research provides for harnessing the optimal qualities of both artificial and natural photosynthetic systems and developing materials that capture, convert, and store solar energy as a fuel.

Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction by Near-Infrared-Light (1200 nm) Irradiation and a Ruthenium-Intercalated NiAl-Layered Double Hydroxide.

Near-infrared light-driven photocatalytic CO2 reduction (NIR-CO2PR) holds tremendous promise for the production of valuable commodity chemicals and fuels. However, designing photocatalysts capable of reducing CO2 with low energy NIR photons remains challenging. Herein, a novel NIR-driven photocatalyst comprising an anionic Ru complex intercalated between NiAl-layered double hydroxide nanosheets (NiAl-Ru-LDH) is shown to deliver efficient CO2 photoreduction (0.887 μmol h-1) with CO selectivity of 84.81 % under 1200 nm illumination and excellent stability over 50 testing cycles. This remarkable performance results from the intercalated Ru complex lowering the LDH band gap (0.98 eV) via a compression-related charge redistribution phenomenon. Furthermore, transient absorption spectroscopy data verified light-induced electron transfer from the Ru complex towards the LDH sheets, increasing the availability of electrons to drive CO2PR. The presence of hydroxyl defects in the LDH sheets promotes the adsorption of CO2 molecules and lowers the energy barriers for NIR-CO2PR to CO. To our knowledge, this is one of the first reports of NIR-CO2PR at wavelengths up to 1200 nm in LDH-based photocatalyst systems.

Boosting photo-thermal co-catalysis CO2 methanation by tuning interface electron transfer via Mott-Schottky heterojunction effect

Photo-thermal co-catalytic reduction of CO2 to synthesize value-added chemicals presents a promising approach to addressing environmental issues. Nevertheless, traditional catalysts exhibit low light utilization efficiency, leading to the generation of a reduced number of electron-hole pairs and rapid recombination, thereby limiting catalytic performance enhancement. Herein, a Mott-Schottky heterojunction catalyst was developed by incorporating nitrogen-doped carbon coated TiO2 supported nickel (Ni) nanometallic particles (Ni/x-TiO2@NC). The optimal Ni/0.5-TiO2@NC sample displayed a conversion rate of 71.6 % and a methane (CH4) production rate of 65.3 mmol/(gcat·h) during photo-thermal co-catalytic CO2 methanation under full-spectrum illumination, with a CH4 selectivity exceeding 99.6 %. The catalyst demonstrates good stability as it shows no decay after two reaction cycles. The Mott-Schottky heterojunction catalysts display excellent efficiency in separating photo-generated electron-hole pairs and elevate the catalysts’ temperature, thus accelerating the reaction rate. The in-situ experiments revealed that light-induced electron transfer effectively facilitates H2 dissociation and enhances surface defects, thereby promoting CO2 adsorption. This study introduces a novel approach for developing photo-thermal catalysts for CO2 reduction, aiming to enhance solar energy utilization and facilitate interface electron transfer.

Factors that Impact Photochemical Cage Escape Yields.

The utilization of visible light to mediate chemical reactions in fluid solutions has applications that range from solar fuel production to medicine and organic synthesis. These reactions are typically initiated by electron transfer between a photoexcited dye molecule (a photosensitizer) and a redox-active quencher to yield radical pairs that are intimately associated within a solvent cage. Many of these radicals undergo rapid thermodynamically favored "geminate" recombination and do not diffuse out of the solvent cage that surrounds them. Those that do escape the cage are useful reagents that may undergo subsequent reactions important to the above-mentioned applications. The cage escape process and the factors that determine the yields remain poorly understood despite decades of research motivated by their practical and fundamental importance. Herein, state-of-the-art research on light-induced electron transfer and cage escape that has appeared since the seminal 1972 review by J. P. Lorand entitled "The Cage Effect" is reviewed. This review also provides some background for those new to the field and discusses the cage escape process of both homolytic bond photodissociation and bimolecular light induced electron transfer reactions. The review concludes with some key goals and directions for future research that promise to elevate this very vibrant field to even greater heights.

Synthesis of AgInS2 quantum dots for metronidazole detection in eggs using a fluorescence-quenched probe

Metronidazole (MNZ) is a type of nitroimidazole antibiotic widely used in livestock feed. The extensive use, overuse, and misuse of MNZ have resulted in high levels of MNZ residues in animal products, posing serious health risks to people. Based on the effective fluorescence quenching capability of MNZ, a highly precise technique characterized by low-cost materials, low detection limit, and simple operational procedure was established to detect MNZ in eggs by modulating the fluorescence produced by AgInS2 quantum dots (AIS QDs). The performance of the prepared sample was outstanding as the linear range was 0.25–80.00 μg/mL with a detection limit (LOD) of 0.166 μg/mL and R2 = 0.9996, having an average recovery of MNZ in egg white ranged from 94.88 % to 102.39 %. This detection method has the advantages of a wide detection range, high sensitivity, high accuracy, excellent selectivity, and simple operability, and it can be used to detect MNZ in eggs after further study. The fluorescence quenching mechanism of AIS QDs by MNZ is speculated as a dynamic quenching mechanism of light-induced electron transfer.

Red Shift in the Absorption Spectrum of Phototropin LOV1 upon the Formation of a Semiquinone Radical: Reconstructing the Orbital Architecture.

Flavin mononucleotide (FMN) is a ubiquitous blue-light pigment due to its ability to drive one- and two-electron transfer reactions. In both light-oxygen-voltage (LOV) domains of phototropin from the green algae Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, FMN is noncovalently bound. In the LOV1 cysteine-to-serine mutant (C57S), light-induced electron transfer from a nearby tryptophan occurs, and a transient spin-correlated radical pair (SCRP) is formed. Within this photocycle, nuclear hyperpolarization is created by the solid-state photochemically induced dynamic nuclear polarization (photo-CIDNP) effect. In a side reaction, a stable protonated semiquinone radical (FMNH·) forms undergoing a significant bathochromic shift of the first electronic transition from 445 to 591 nm. The incorporation of phototropin LOV1-C57S into an amorphous trehalose matrix, stabilizing the radical, allows for application of various magnetic resonance experiments at ambient temperatures, which are combined with quantum-chemical calculations. As a result, the bathochromic shift of the first absorption band is explained by lifting the degeneracy of the molecular orbital energy levels for electrons with alpha and beta spins in FMNH· due to the additional electron.

Is the A-1 Pigment in Photosystem I Part of P700? A (P700+-P700) FTIR Difference Spectroscopy Study of A-1 Mutants.

The involvement of the second pair of chlorophylls, termed A-1A and A-1B, in light-induced electron transfer in photosystem I (PSI) is currently debated. Asparagines at PsaA600 and PsaB582 are involved in coordinating the A-1B and A-1A pigments, respectively. Here we have mutated these asparagine residues to methionine in two single mutants and a double mutant in PSI from Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803, which we term NA600M, NB582M, and NA600M/NB582M mutants. (P700+-P700) FTIR difference spectra (DS) at 293 K were obtained for the wild-type and the three mutant PSI samples. The wild-type and mutant FTIR DS differ considerably. This difference indicates that the observed changes in the (P700+-P700) FTIR DS cannot be due to only the PA and PB pigments of P700. Comparison of the wild-type and mutant FTIR DS allows the assignment of different features to both A-1 pigments in the FTIR DS for wild-type PSI and assesses how these features shift upon cation formation and upon mutation. While the exact role the A-1 pigments play in the species we call P700 is unclear, we demonstrate that the vibrational modes of the A-1A and A-1B pigments are modified upon P700+ formation. Previously, we showed that the A-1 pigments contribute to P700 in green algae. In this manuscript, we demonstrate that this is also the case in cyanobacterial PSI. The nature of the mutation-induced changes in algal and cyanobacterial PSI is similar and can be considered within the same framework, suggesting a universality in the nature of P700 in different photosynthetic organisms.

Cage escape governs photoredox reaction rates and quantum yields

Photoredox catalysis relies on light-induced electron transfer leading to a radical pair comprising an oxidized donor and a reduced acceptor in a solvent cage. For productive onward reaction to occur, the oxidized donor and the reduced acceptor must escape from that solvent cage before they undergo spontaneous reverse electron transfer. Here we show the decisive role that cage escape plays in three benchmark photocatalytic reactions, namely, an aerobic hydroxylation, a reductive debromination and an aza-Henry reaction. Using ruthenium(II)- and chromium(III)-based photocatalysts, which provide inherently different cage escape quantum yields, we determined quantitative correlations between the rates of photoredox product formation and the cage escape quantum yields. These findings can be largely rationalized within the framework of Marcus theory for electron transfer.

Light-induced electron transfer is a key step in solar energy conversion, and a process with myriad relevance in the fields of artificial photosynthesis, photocatalysis, photoconductivity, and photovoltaics. In a donor-acceptor, D-A system, light absorption by a chromophore results in the formation of an excited state species, followed by a charge transfer between an electron donor (D) and an electron acceptor (A) leading to a charge-separated D .+ -A .- species.The optimization of these processes and comprehending their mutual interplay to ultimately achieve charge-separated species is of paramount importance for the development of efficient systems in solar light conversion schemes.The present talk summarizes our research over the years focused on utilizing nano carbons, viz., fullerenes, endohedral fullerenes, carbon nanotubes, and graphene in the construction of donor-acceptor systems capable of undergoing photoinduced energy and electron transfer events. Both, covalently linked with rigid, semi-rigid, flexible, or conjugated spacers, and self-assembled via metal-ligand axial coordination, ion-pairing, ion-dipole, or hydrogen bonding strategies were utilized in the construction of donor-acceptor conjugates. Multi-modular donor-acceptor constructs were designed, synthesized, and studied to probe sequential energy and electron transfer events, finally resulting in long-lived charge-separated states. In some instances, these molecular systems were also used as photocatalytic energy conversion schemes. Photothermal catalytic hydrolysis of COS with enhanced efficiency over constructed alkali-modified La-Ti catalyst: Adjusting photogenerated electron behavior through metal‐support interactions

The low-temperature conversion of corrosive carbonyl sulfide (COS) in steel by-product gas is essential for the clean utilization of this gas. Herein, La-Ti@K catalysts doped with La nanoparticles were shown to exhibit significant photopromoted thermocatalytic activity and stability under UV light irradiation. At a reaction temperature of 60 °C, the TOF value increased from 4.84 × 10-4 s−1 (TiO2, thermal treatment) to 8.43 × 10-4 s−1 (La-Ti@K, photothermal treatment), and the H2S selectivity exceeded 99%. This was because La doping increased the density of basic sites on TiO2, which promoted the continuous dissociation of H2O in the system and the regeneration of –OH under UV irradiation. Moreover, the photogenerated electrons from TiO2 were transferred to La to maintain the metallic La nanoparticles, as well as to ensure the activation and photothermal hydrolysis of COS. The presence of a suitable electron-metal-support interaction (EMSI) between the electron-rich La nanoparticles and TiO2 might be responsible for these phenomena. In addition, theoretical calculations revealed that light-induced electron transfer was conducive to H2O dissociation and COS activation, while La doping reduced the free energy of the hydrolysis reaction. This work demonstrates the effectiveness of La-Ti@K catalyst in COS photothermal hydrolysis and provides a theoretical basis for further understanding of the photothermal catalytic mechanism.

Effect of cationic antiseptics on fluorescent characteristics and electron transfer in cyanobacterial photosystem I complexes.

In this study, the effects of cationic antiseptics such as chlorhexidine, picloxidine, miramistin, and octenidine at concentrations up to 150µM on fluorescence spectra and its lifetimes, as well as on light-induced electron transfer in protein-pigment complexes of photosystem I (PSI) isolated from cyanobacterium Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 have been studied. In doing so, octenidine turned out to be the most "effective" in terms of its influence on the spectral and functional characteristics of PSI complexes. It has been shown that the rate of energy migration from short-wavelength forms of light-harvesting chlorophyll to long-wavelength ones slows down upon addition of octenidine to the PSI suspension. After photo-separation of charges between the primary electron donor P700 and the terminal iron-sulfur center(s) FA/FB, the rate of forward electron transfer from (FA/FB)- to the external medium slows down while the rate of charge recombination between reduced FA/FB- and photooxidized P700+ increases. The paper considers the possible causes of the observed action of the antiseptic.

Infrared Light-Induced Anomalous Defect-Mediated Plasmonic Hot Electron Transfer for Enhanced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution.

Efficient utilization of infrared (IR) light, which occupies almost half of the solar energy, is an important but challenging task in solar-to-fuel transformation. Herein, we report the discovery of CuS@ZnS core@shell nanocrystals (CSNCs) with strong localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) characteristics in the IR light region showing enhanced photocatalytic activity in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). A unique "plasmon-induced defect-mediated carrier transfer" (PIDCT) at the heterointerfaces of the CSNCs divulged by time-resolved transient spectroscopy enables producing a high quantum yield of 29.2%. The CuS@ZnS CSNCs exhibit high activity and stability in H2 evolution under near-IR light irradiation. The HER rate of CuS@ZnS CSNCs at 26.9 μmol h-1 g-1 is significantly higher than those of CuS NCs (0.4 μmol h-1 g-1) and CuS/ZnS core/satellite heterostructured NCs (15.6 μmol h-1 g-1). The PIDCT may provide a viable strategy for the tuning of LSPR-generated carrier kinetics through controlling the defect engineering to improve photocatalytic performance.

Quantum Simulation of Polarized Light-Induced Electron Transfer with a Trapped-Ion Qutrit System.

Electron transfer within and between molecules is crucial in chemistry, biochemistry, and energy science. This study describes a quantum simulation method that explores the influence of light polarization on electron transfer between two molecules. By implementing precise and coherent control among the quantum states of trapped atomic ions, we can induce quantum dynamics that mimic the electron-transfer dynamics in molecules. We use three-level systems (qutrits), rather than traditional two-level systems (qubits), to enhance the simulation efficiency and realize high-fidelity simulations of electron-transfer dynamics. We treat the quantum interference between the electron coupling pathways from a donor with two degenerate excited states to an acceptor and analyze the transfer efficiency. We also examine the potential error sources that enter the quantum simulations. The trapped-ion systems have favorable scalings with system size compared to those of classical computers, promising access to richer electron-transfer simulations.

Mechanochemical synthesis of molybdenum disulfide quantum dots with enhanced dye adsorption and photocatalytic performance

Wet-mechanochemical exfoliation of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) flakes into MoS2 quantum dots (QDs) using various exfoliation agents is studied, and the photoluminescence, adsorption and photocatalytic activities of QDs toward the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) are evaluated. The application of ethanol as the low-boiling point (≈78 °C) exfoliation agent leads to the formation of E-MoS2 QDs (4.6 nm) with 1T-crystalline modification, dominately functionalized with hydroxyl groups. Initial MoS2 provides a weak adsorption capacity (27 mg/g), while no photocatalytic activity is observed under LED-light irradiation. E-MoS2 QDs exhibit a poor photocatalytic performance, but an excellent RhB adsorption with an equilibrium capacity of 180 mg/g under dark condition. In contrast, the application of N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) as the high-boiling point (≈202 °C) exfoliation agent leads to the fabrication of N-MoS2 QDs (4.8 nm) with stable 2H-crystalline modification. N-MoS2 QDs exhibits a limited adsorption capacity (32 mg/g), but an excellent stability and photocatalytic performance. At the photocatalyst dosage of 0.1 g/L, the degradation rate of dye (20 mg/L) is recorded at 100 % after 140 min of LED-light (450 nm) illumination. Reusability of N-MoS2 QDs in photocatalysis process is confirmed. Appropriate energy band gap, together with the surface amino/carboxyl functional groups are discussed to be responsible for enhanced light-induced intramolecular electron transfer, thus photocatalytic performance of the material.

Mechanism and Dynamics of Photodecarboxylation Catalyzed by Lactate Monooxygenase.

Photoenzymes are a rare class of biocatalysts that use light to facilitate chemical reactions. Many of these catalysts utilize a flavin cofactor to absorb light, suggesting that other flavoproteins might have latent photochemical functions. Lactate monooxygenase is a flavin-dependent oxidoreductase previously reported to mediate the photodecarboxylation of carboxylates to afford alkylated flavin adducts. While this reaction holds a potential synthetic value, the mechanism and synthetic utility of this process are unknown. Here, we combine femtosecond spectroscopy, site-directed mutagenesis, and a hybrid quantum-classical computational approach to reveal the active site photochemistry and the role the active site amino acid residues play in facilitating this decarboxylation. Light-induced electron transfer from histidine to flavin was revealed, which has not been reported in other proteins. These mechanistic insights enable the development of catalytic oxidative photodecarboxylation of mandelic acid to produce benzaldehyde, a previously unknown reaction for photoenzymes. Our findings suggest that a much wider range of enzymes have the potential for photoenzymatic catalysis than has been realized to date.

Detection of enrofloxacin residues in dairy products based on their fluorescence quenching effect on AgInS2 QDs

Water-soluble AgInS2 (AIS) quantum dots (QDs) were successfully prepared through the one-pot water phase method with thioglycolic acid (TGA) as the stabilizing agent. Because enrofloxacin (ENR) effectively quenches the fluorescence of AIS QDs, a highly-sensitive fluorescence detection method is proposed to detect ENR residues in milk. Under optimal detection conditions, there was a good linear relationship between the relative fluorescence quenching amount (ΔF/F0) of AgInS2 with ENR and ENR concentration (C). The detection range was 0.3125–20.00 μg/mL, r = 0.9964, and the detection limit (LOD) was 0.024 μg/mL (n = 11). The average recovery of ENR in milk ranged from 95.43 to 114.28%. The method established in this study has advantages including a high sensitivity, a low detection limit, simple operation and a low cost. The fluorescence quenching mechanism of AIS QDs with ENR was discussed and the dynamic quenching mechanism of light-induced electron transfer was proposed.
