Practical implementation of configuration management in the context of concept ship design – first lessons

The implementation of configuration management (CM) in support of concept design activities at the Products and Proposals department of Damen Naval has put forward a number of challenges that seem to be unique to the shipbuilding industry and the process of concept development therein, that traditional enterprise-level product lifecycle management software and processes are unable to tackle. Information fluidity, an uneven and fast evolving tooling landscape and limited team sizes have driven us to pursue dedicated software implementations in support of CM during concept design. From the first attempts of doing so, we have seen that a number of performance requirements for the software that were completely under the radar are now driving factors for further selection (mostly related to speed and agility of the tool), while some others even impact our way of working and organizational structure as a whole, requiring us to carry system responsibility per discipline, instead of only functional responsibility.

An information model of an automated system for identifying point defects of sheet glass is proposed, imple-mented using Harmony technology and the IBM Rhapsody Modeler software environment, which provides automation of modeling, design and testing of software. For automated detection (localization) and determination of the type (identification) of defects in sheet glass based on the class diagram, modules are implemented that are responsible for the implementation of localization algorithms, identification, interaction with sensors and cameras, archiving, data transmission to the network and data generation for display on the monitor of the operator and technologist. The industrial computer software is implemented in C++ in MS Visual Studio. The application of the Harmony software lifecycle management methodology and the IBM Rhapsody Modeler visual modeling environment has made it possible to increase the efficiency of the development of an automated system for identifying point defects of flat glass. The resulting program model of the automated system simplifies its adaptation to new operating requirements and the connection of additional hardware.

The construction industry impacts resource consumption and waste production and thus necessitates solutions that promote sustainable practices. In particular, it must address challenges surrounding data collection and digital management services that often hinder the recycling or reuse of materials. The purpose of this study is to develop an integrated platform-based digital tool that seamlessly incorporates circular economy principles into construction processes, with a particular focus on circular resource utilization in the building envelope components’ life cycle. This tool aims to address the challenges in the construction industry related to resource consumption, waste production, and sustainability by promoting sustainable practices and improving material management. This paper reports industrial joint research to develop an integrated platform-based digital tool that seamlessly incorporates circular economy principles into construction processes, focusing on circular resource utilization in the building envelope components life cycle. By combining different platforms and services from the previous research, this study’s results enhance and integrate comprehensive thinking approaches and services. These include promoting raw material substitution, reducing supply chain arrangement time, minimizing waste throughout the building component lifecycle, enhancing disassembly processes, and improving life cycle environmental assessments. The tool design was informed by user-driven narratives and requirements, and demo case testing procedures, ensuring usability and industry relevance. Furthermore, integration with product lifecycle management software and data management platforms enhanced data sharing and accuracy. This study highlights the potential of integrated tools to revolutionize supply chains and promote circular economy, transforming construction paradigms. They can contribute to the reshaping of material management towards environmental consciousness, fostering resource-efficient green building solutions, and enabling more circularity in the construction industry.

A comprehensive examination of the process of developing specialized safety-oriented software is conducted. The incongruity of the presently known development methodologies with the circumstances in which innovative safety-oriented software systems are created is unveiled. For this reason, the purpose of this article is to investigate the existing methods and formulate novel approaches to managing the life cycle of specialized software (safety-oriented services), which are relevant to the specific requirements of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine and align with the principles of a flexible software life cycle management methodology. A thorough exploration is conducted on the current agile methods and approaches employed in the development of critical services, specifically in sectors such as military, railway, aerospace, medical, and other domains of operation. The aim is to establish the merits of flexibility in fostering innovation within specialized safety-oriented software. The fundamental concepts of agile methods for software system life cycle management are synergistically integrated, taking into consideration the unique requirements of rescue service development. Furthermore, the existing empirical data on the feasibility and advantages of implementing agile methods in the security industry are expanded upon. Especially, the agile Scrum method is enhanced through the proposal of employing the mathematical framework of graph theory (network planning method) to automate the planning stage and identify critical functions, including the critical path, the early execution time of events, the late execution times of events, and reserved time for tasks. This method aids in developing a minimum viable product for a safety-oriented system. A conceptual model of the life cycle management process for safety-oriented services has been meticulously developed. This model is predicated on a flexible approach to software development, which aims to automate the tasks performed by project teams and enhance the overall efficacy of specialized software development. On its basis, it is proposed to develop a decision support system for managing the life cycle of safety-oriented software systems development, which is relevant for the State Emergency Service of Ukraine.

Investigating the Use of an Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System in Software Development Effort Estimation

Modeling software development effort estimation models has been a hot research topic over the last three decades. Numerous models were proposed in these decades to predict the effort. The key challenges for future software development is providing accurate software estimation. Failure to acknowledge the accuracy of effort estimation can cause inaccurate estimation, customer disappointment, and poor software development or project failure. This research presents a novel computational technique, named adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), for the modeling of software effort estimation. It was developed utilizing the Constructive Cost Model (COCOMO) dataset. The data were randomly divided into two sets: 83% for training and 17% for testing. The mean magnitude relative-error (MMRE) and the coefficient of correlation (R) were used as assessment indices. Results showed that the accuracy of the proposed model is quite satisfactory in comparison with actual values. Moreover, a comparison study was conducted with another approach. The results showed that ANFIS produced better results in comparison with Function Point Analysis, Software Lifecycle Management, and COCOMO methods. ANFIS was found to be a potential predictive model for software development effort estimation.

Computer Life-Cycle Management System for Avionics Software as a Tool for Supporting the Sustainable Development of Air Transport

The article presents selected results of analytical and design works undertaken at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) in the field of building a computer support and software lifecycle management system that is critical for flight safety. The aim of the work undertaken is to develop methods and carry out verification and testing in order to detect errors in the developed avionics software for compliance with the requirements of the DO-178C standard and its production, certification, and implementation on board aircraft. The authors developed an original computer system within the implemented requirements used in the construction and certification of avionic onboard devices and their software (among others, DO-254, DO-178C, AQAP 2210, ARP 4761, ARP 4754A). The conducted analysis involved three basic groups of avionics software development processes, i.e., software planning, creation, and integration. Examples of solutions implemented in the constructed computer system were presented for each of these process groups. The theoretical basis of the new method for predicting vulnerabilities in the software implemented within integrated avionic systems using branching processes is discussed. It was demonstrated that the possibility of predicting vulnerabilities in future software versions could have a significant impact on assessing the risk associated with software safety in the course of its lifecycle. It was indicated that some of the existing quantitative models for analyzing software vulnerabilities were developed based on dedicated software data, which is why actual scenario implementation may be limited. DO-178C standard requirements for the process of developing avionics software were implemented in the helmet-mounted flight parameter display system constructed at AFIT. The requirements of the DO-178C and AQAP 2210 standards were shown to be met in the example of the software developed for a graphics computer, managing the operating modes of this system.

DEVELOPMENT OF INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT INFORMATION SYSTEMS IN THE CONTEXT OF INDUSTRY 4.0

In this paper, development trends of information systems, information systems technology and enterprise information management were analyzed in the context of Industry 4.0 tools. In the first part (par. 1-2), fundamental definitions referred to the subject were presented as well as historic background of Integrated Management Information Systems. In the second part (par. 3), evolution and trends in ERP class systems, electronic economy tools and Product Lifecycle Management software were described. In the third part (par. 4-5), observed trends in information systems technology, in relation to Industry 4.0 tools, were discussed including manufacturing resources, production objects and novel management strategies approach. Many conclusions were related with actual manufacturing practices observed by the authors.​​

Seamless computing in industrial systems using container orchestration

Industrial systems are increasingly dominated by software. In addition, this software is distributed across several compute domains, from decentralized edge to centralized datacenters and clouds. While software lifecycle management has tremendously improved in the area of cloud computing, there is no homogeneous and seamless environment to build, deploy and operate software across these domains. This leads to a separation, inefficient processes, and increased efforts in providing software that runs across the different layers. This paper introduces the concept of seamless computing, which provides a homogeneous computing environment for multi-domain applications, supporting the mobility of workloads between cloud and edge. The approach is based on transferring established, de-facto standard cloud computing technologies to resource-constrained compute environments in the edge. After defining high-level requirements for seamless computing, a functional reference model is proposed, and existing cloud technologies are discussed. Finally, a concept and results of an implementation of seamless computing using container orchestration are presented and discussed.

Developing the UNPAD SAS (Universitas Padjajaran Statistical Analysis Series) Software

Student in Faculty of Psycho­logy think that Statistics is very difficult for them, because Statistics is viewed as a hard science than Psychology which is viewed as a soft science. Various attempts have been made to improve student atti­tudes toward statistics, so that student ha­ve more positive attitudes. One of the ef­forts is to transform the curiculum of Sta­tistics in Faculty of Psychology UniversitasPadjadjaran by adding SPSS (Statistical Packages for Social Sciences) practicum courses since 2009. There are a variety of data analysis con­tained in SPSS can be used for data pro­cessing. However, there are still some sta­tistical data analysis used by students of the Faculty of Psychology that is not ava­ilable in SPSS. The aimed of this research is to develop software namely UniversitasPadjadjaran Statistical Analysis Series, which is statistical data analysis software that consist analysis that does not exist in SPSS or other data analysis software. In this preliminary research, modules are de­veloped only for Database Management and Descriptive Statistics.The software development will be carried out by (SDLC = Software Development Li­fe Cycle). SDLC is a series of step or phase that presents a model for development and lifecycle management software or applica­tions.The resulting software is tested on 144 stu­dents in Psychology Faculty in UniversitasPadjadjaran. The trial results showed that the software is most appropriate and "user friendly" software.

An approach to characterize and evaluate the quality of Product Lifecycle Management Software Systems

PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) is an information management system that can integrate data, processes, business systems and staff in a company, in general. PLM allows managing efficiently and economically the information that all these elements generate from the initial idea to design, manufacture, maintenance and elimination phases of the product lifecycle. PLM has to include processes and tools to assure the quality of the final products. This way, it is difficult for PLM experts (from aeronautical or automation organizations, among others) to find an environment that suggests which is the best PLM solution that copes with their necessities. A number of PLM solutions are available for this purpose, but experts require a suitable mechanism to select the most appropriate one for the specific context of each organization. For this purpose, this paper presents a quality model, based on QuEF (Quality Evaluation Framework), that aims at helping organizations choose the most useful PLM solution for their particular environments. This model supports both static and dynamic aspects that may be customized for any kind of organization and taken as reference model. Particularly, our approach has been validated in the context of large enterprises in the aeronautical industry within a real R&D project carried out between our research group and Airbus.

An Open Architecture Framework for Electronic Warfare Based Approach to HLA Federate Development

A variety of electronic warfare models are developed in the Electronic Warfare Research Center. An Open Architecture Framework for Electronic Warfare (OAFEw) has been developed for reusability of various object models participating in the electronic warfare simulation and for extensibility of the electronic warfare simulator. OAFEw is a kind of component-based software (SW) lifecycle management support framework. This OAFEw is defined by six components and ten rules. The purpose of this study is to construct a Distributed Simulation Interface Model, according to the rules of OAFEw, and create Use Case Model of OAFEw Reference Conceptual Model version 1.0. This is embodied in the OAFEw-FOM (Federate Object Model) for High-Level Architecture (HLA) based distributed simulation. Therefore, we design and implement EW real-time distributed simulation that can work with a model in C++ and MATLAB API (Application Programming Interface). In addition, OAFEw-FOM, electronic component model, and scenario of the electronic warfare domain were designed through simple scenarios for verification, and real-time distributed simulation between C++ and MATLAB was performed through OAFEw-Distributed Simulation Interface.

Enterprise storage software lifecycle management system

Storage subsystems reside at the bottom-most layer of a contemporary data-center information technology (IT) stack. As with all other production software, the storage layer's embedded software (or firmware ) must be constantly maintained in terms of upgrading it when new versions are released by hardware vendors. We study the problem of maintaining the currency of the storage software layer. We survey the typical processes that are used to keep storage firmware at recommended versions within a data center, and present an automated solution for this tedious and labor-intensive task. We present an approach to quantify the risk for continuing operations posed by stale firmware, a context-based approach for recommending target levels for devices with stale firmware, and an Upgrade Planner for rectifying the firmware of such devices. Our system has been deployed in the field using two approaches: as an operational tool used by hundreds of storage administrators within an outsourced IT context, and as an automated analytics component of an appliance-based approach within a maintenance services organization. We study the growth of the monitored infrastructure over two years. Finally, we show how our system drastically shrinks the time for an enterprise IT firmware upgrade cycle from days to minutes, and changes the nature of the complex task from a reactive to a proactive paradigm.

The application of virtual reality systems as a support of digital manufacturing and logistics

Modern trends in development of computer aided techniques are heading toward the integration of design competitive products and so-called "digital manufacturing and logistics", supported by computer simulation software. All phases of product lifecycle: starting from design of a new product, through planning and control of manufacturing, assembly, internal logistics and repairs, quality control, distribution to customers and after-sale service, up to its recycling or utilization should be aided and managed by advanced packages of product lifecycle management software. Important problems for providing the efficient flow of materials in supply chain management of whole product lifecycle, using computer simulation will be described on that paper. Authors will pay attention to the processes of acquiring relevant information and correct data, necessary for virtual modeling and computer simulation of integrated manufacturing and logistics systems. The article describes possibilities of use an applications of virtual reality software for modeling and simulation the production and logistics processes in enterprise in different aspects of product lifecycle management. The authors demonstrate effective method of creating computer simulations for digital manufacturing and logistics and show modeled and programmed examples and solutions. They pay attention to development trends and show options of the applications that go beyond enterprise.

Computing in high-energy physics

I present a very personalized journey through more than three decades of computing for experimental high-energy physics, pointing out the enduring lessons that I learned. This is followed by a vision of how the computing environment will evolve in the coming ten years and the technical challenges that this will bring. I then address the scale and cost of high-energy physics software and examine the many current and future challenges, particularly those of management, funding and software-lifecycle management. Finally, I describe recent developments aimed at improving the overall coherence of high-energy physics software.

Manufacturers are looking for ways to improve efficiency with better monitoring of their projects. By connecting designers and engineers to other parts of the business, companies have a better chance of not just designing better products but making sure they can make them efficiently and support them for years to come. Product lifecycle management (PLM) software provides some of the means, by providing tighter integration between design, manufacture and support, synchronising information from the initial concept stage through to final production.

Model-Based Development Process of Cybertronic Products and Production Systems

The shift to satisfied customer markets forces manufacturers to offer customised products. Moreover, product lifecycles are shortened, which requires a faster development of products and corresponding production systems. Both challenges amplify complexity in production. This complexity is usually confronted with flexibility. A new approach offering decentralised structures, and thereby flexibility, comes from cybertronic systems (CTS), which are further developed mechatronic systems with the capability to communicate through open networks with other such mechatronic systems. Up to now no integrated development process to engineer cybertronic products (CTP) and production systems (CTPS) has been developed, although such a process is essential to use their beneficial properties for today’s market conditions. Therefore, research is conducted in the research project mecPro². First, the properties of cybertronic systems are investigated and dissociated from those of mechatronic systems. Based on these properties, the connections of CTP and CTPS are analysed and a systematics for description for both is identified. With this the model-based development processes of CTP and CTPS can be further defined as well as their intersections and afterwards implemented in a data model. Finally, the development process is summarised in a product lifecycle management software to support the development process.

Data Management Lifecycle and Software Lifecycle Management in the Context of Conducting Science

This paper examines the potential for comparisons of digital science data curation lifecycles to software lifecycle development to provide insight into promoting sustainable science software. The goal of this paper is to start a dialog examining the commonalities, connections, and potential complementarities between the data lifecycle and the software lifecycle in support of sustainable software. We argue, based on this initial survey, delving more deeply into the connections between data lifecycle approaches and software development lifecycles will enhance both in support of science.
