A new record of lichenized fungus species for Antarctica: Peltigera castanea Goward, Goffinet & Miądl.

As a result of our studies aiming to determine the lichen mycota of the James Ross Island (Antarctic Peninsula), we report Peltigera castanea, a species in the P. didactyla complex from Antarctica and Southern Hemisphere for the first time. Collections were evaluated using morphological, anatomical and molecular characteristics (nrITS). Peltigera castanea has foliose, 4-6 cm lobate thallus; upper surface dark brown to chestnut brown, weakly tomentose (especially in the margins of the lobes) and sorediate. The morphological and ecological variations of this species are discussed in this paper.

Eleven new records of lichens to the state of Kerala, India

Abstract:The present paper deals with new records of lichen species from the state of Kerala, India. The study was conducted as part of the exploration of lichen mycota from the croplands and forests of Pathanamthitta district in Kerala. Field study and collection of specimens were conducted during the period 2017-2019. Specimens were identified using standard procedures, keys and literature followed by preservation and deposition in the recognized herbaria of the country (LWG and RHK). Eleven species of lichens, Cladonia praetermissa A.W. Archer, Collema japonicum (Müll. Arg.) Hue, Heterodermia hypochraea (Vain.) Swinscow & Krog, Leptogium coralloideum (Meyen & Flot.) Vain., Pannaria emodii P.M. Jørg., Phyllopsora chlorophaea (Müll. Arg.) Zahlbr., Phyllopsora parvifolia var. subgranulosa (Tuck.) Müll. Arg., Physcia dilatata Nyl., Physcia dubia (Hoffm.) Lettau, Physcia sorediosa (Vain.) Lynge, and Pseudocyphellaria clathrata (De Not.) Malme are being reported for the first time from Kerala. These are enumerated along with their present distribution. This study further enriches the lichen diversity of the state.

Further Additions to the Plasticolous Lichens from India

The present paper describes diversity of plasticolous lichens colonizing a 15-year-old nylon net house at Chamoli district, Garhwal Himalaya, documenting a total of 19 species of lichens, in which 12 species are being reported for the first time as plasticolous lichen mycota from India and out of these 12 species, 09 species are being reported first time across the world as plasticolous.

Bathelium porinosporum Lücking, M.P. Nelsen & Gueidan is reported as a new record for Indian lichen mycota. A key to all known Indian species is provided to facilitate their identification.

Sphaerellothecium reticulatum (Zopf) Etayo, a new lichenicolous fungusfor Antarctica

In the project aiming to determine the lichen mycota of James Ross Island, we identified a new lichenicolous fungus species which is reported from Antarctica for the first time: Sphaerellothecium reticulatum on Flavoparmelia gerlachei. Although this species was identified on other parmelioid lichens, it was never reported on Flavoparmelia spp.

New Species and New Record of Genus Chrysothrix (Chrysotrichaceae, Arthoniales) from South Korea and Chile

The genus Chrysothrix is very common around the world and easy to be recognized by its bright yellowish granular thallus. In this study, investigations of lichen mycota in South Korea and Chile from 2010 to 2017 have been done, and some Chrysothrix specimens were collected, based on the morphological and chemical study on these specimens, five species were confirmed in this study, including one new species from Chile, Chrysothrix chilensis D. Liu & J.-S Hur, and one new record from South Korea, C. xanthina (Vain.) Kalb. Meanwhile, detail description and illustration for each species were present in this study.

Identification of some lichenised fungi from James Ross Island (Antarctic Peninsula) using nrITS markers

ABSTRACTJames Ross Island (Antarctic Peninsula) is one of the lichen rich islands of Antarctica because of its large deglaciated area, with over 140 species of lichenised fungi being reported from the island. Because of its rich lichen biodiversity we decided to study the lichen biodiversity of James Ross Island in more detail, using molecular techniques in addition to morphological characters. Collections made from James Ross Island in the 2016–2017 season by the first and second authors showed that lichen biodiversity of Antarctica is still poorly known and that molecular studies should be carried out to determine the lichen mycota of the white continent. For this research we selected five species and, after morphological and anatomical studies, we also worked with the nrITS gene regions of the selected specimens. Aspicilia virginea and Peltigera ponojensis are new to Antarctica and we provide nrITS data for Candelaria murrayi and Flavoparmelia gerlachei for the first time. Austroplaca frigida was only known from continental Antarctica and we report this species from maritime Antarctica for the first time. Detailed descriptions, habitat preferences and nrITS phylogenies of these species are provided. We believe that the lichen biodiversity of Antarctica will be much better known if molecular techniques are used in the classification of lichenised fungi.

Catalogue of the Lichenized and Lichenicolous Fungi of Kosovo

Abstract: Mayrhofer, H., Czeh, D., Kobald, E.-M. & Bilovitz, P. O. 2016. Catalogue of the lichenized and lichenicolous fungi of Kosovo. — Herzogia 29: 529–554. The catalogue is based on a comprehensive evaluation of 37 publications containing records from Kosovo, and on recent collections from the Sar Planina. The lichen mycota as currently known includes 488 taxa (477 species with 5 subspecies, 5 varieties and 1 form) of lichenized and 25 species of lichenicolous fungi. Fifty one species are reported for the first time.

Further new or interesting lichens and lichenicolous fungi from Madeira with notes on the genus Gyalidea in Macaronesia

As a contribution to the lichen mycota of the island Madeira (Macaronesia), 62 taxa of lichens and lichenicolous fungi are reported for the first time, including 7 taxa new to Macaronesia: Acrocordia cavata, Amandinea efflorescens, Diplolaeviopsis ranula, Lecanora albellula var. macroconidiata, Lecanora sarcopidoides, Scoliciosporum gallurae, and Thelidium minutulum. A new species, Gyalidea subminuta, is described from Madeira, and a key for the genus Gyalidea in Macaronesia is added.

Further new additions to the lichen mycota of Andhra Pradesh, India

During the lichen exploration in Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh several interesting lichen taxa were collected of which 10 species are reported here as new records for the state. The species includes Biatorella conspersa (Biatorellaceae), Caloplaca bassiae, C. poliotera (Teloschistaceae), Dimelaena tenuis (Physciaceae), Lecanora chlarotera, L. helva, L. interjecta, L. psuedistera (Lecanoraceae), Pertusaria melastomella (Pertusariaceae) and Porina tetracerae (Porinaceae). These taxa / species have been enumerated along with their characteristic features and distributional notes.

Three newOpegraphaspecies (Roccellaceae, Arthoniales) and several additions to the North American lichen mycota from Everglades National Park

Opegrapha gyrophorica, O. keyensis and O. protocetrarica, all containing secondary metabolites, are described as new to science from Everglades National Park, Florida, U.S.A. A key is provided for North American species with secondary compounds. In addition, Ampliotrema auratum, Bacidiopsora squamulosula and Eschatogonia prolifera, representing three genera previously unknown from North America, are reported from the mainland of Everglades National Park. Finally, we relate the finding of Coenogonium lutescens, C. pusillum, C. roumeguerianum, C. stenosporum, Graphis paralleloides, G. pyrrhocheiloides and Leucodecton phaeosporum, as new additions to the North American lichen checklist.

New Additions to Lichen Mycota of the Republic of Korea

The current study describes seven species that are new to the lichen mycota of South Korea. A taxonomic description of Arthonia excipienda, A. radiata, Arthothelium ruanum, Enterographa leucolyta, Fissurina elaiocarpa, Rinodina oleae, and Thelotrema porinaceum was given and supported by distribution, ecology, and illustrations. Each species was compared with a species showing close resemblance.

Lichenized fungi of a chestnut grove in Livari (Rumija, Montenegro).

Sixty taxa (59 species and 1 variety) of lichenized fungi are reported from a chestnut grove in Livari. The majority of them (55 species and 1 variety) occurred on Castanea sativa. The recently described Xylographa soralifera is new to the Balkan Peninsula. The lichenicolous fungus Monodictys epilepraria growing on Lepraria rigidula is new to Montenegro. The lichen mycota is compared with similar localities in Italy and Switzerland. The species composition in Livari is most similar to the Montieri site in Tuscany.

Lichen Mycota in South Korea: The Genus Usnea

Usnea Adans. is a somewhat rare lichen in South Korea, and, in nearly two decades, no detailed taxonomic or revisionary study has been conducted. This study was based on the specimens deposited in the lichen herbarium at the Korean Lichen Research Institute, and the samples were identified using information obtained from recent literature. In this study, a total of eight species of Usnea, including one new record, Usnea hakonensis Asahina, are documented. Detailed descriptions of each species with their morphological, anatomical, and chemical characteristics are provided. A key to all known Usnea species in South Korea is also presented.

The Lichen Dirinaria picta New to South Korea

Two species of the lichen genus Dirinaria (Tuck.) Clem. are recognized in the South Korean lichen mycota, viz: D. applanata and D. picta. Descriptions of each species with their morphological, anatomical, and chemical characteristics together with molecular analysis and a key to known Dirinaria species are presented. D. picta is recorded from South Korea for the first time.

Epiphytic Lichen Mycota of the Virgin Forest Reserve Rajhenavski Rog (Slovenia)

A list of 128 taxa (127 species) of lichens, 6 species of lichenicolous fungi and 2 non-lichenized fungi traditionally included in lichenological literature from the virgin forest Rajhenavski Rog and its surroundings in the southeastern part of Slovenia is presented. The lichen Gyalecta derivata, the lichenicolous fungus Homostegia piggotii, and the non-lichenized fungus Mycomicrothelia pachnea are new to Slovenia. The lichenized fungi Chaenotheca trichialis, C. xyloxena, Lecanactis abietina, Lecanora thysanophora, Pertusaria ophthalmiza, the lichenicolous fungi Monodictys epilepraria, Tremella hypogymniae, Taeniolella friesii, and the non-lichenized fungus Chaenothecopsis pusilla are new to the Dinaric phytogeographical region of Slovenia.

Contribution to the lichen mycota of South Korea

The present paper briefly describes 14 subtropical to temperate lichen species new to South Korea. Among the genera Bacidia, Cresponea, Diploschistes, Fissurina, Fuscidea, Micarea, Mycoblastus, Phyllopsora, Sarcogyne, Scoliciosporum, and Toninia reported for the first time from South Korea, Fuscidea recensa var. arcuatula, Micarea elachista, Sarcogyne privigna, and Toninia cinereovirens also represent new records for East Asia, including China and Japan.
