Empathy and LGBTI perspectives among university nursing students in Türkiye

ObjectiveThe research aims to understand the factors influencing nursing students' attitudes towards the LGBTI community, given the importance of culturally competent and inclusive care in healthcare. MethodA descriptive and relationship-seeking design was used. The study was completed by 386 nursing students. Data were collected with “Personal Information Form, LGBTI Attitude Scale (LGBTI-AS) and Toronto Empathy Scale (TEQ)”. Hierarchical regression analysis was used to identify predictors of attitudes towards LGBTI individuals among nursing students. ResultsThe total mean score of the Awareness to LGBTI Attitude Scale was 2.47 ± 1.0 (moderate attitudes). The findings revealed that female students and senior nursing students exhibited more positive attitudes, while those with friendships with LGBTI individuals and higher empathy levels showed greater acceptance and understanding towards the LGBTI community (p < 0.001). The results showed that 22 % of the total variance in the LGBTI attitude could be explained in model 3 (F = 27.43, R2 variation = 0.224, p = 0.001). ConclusionThe study highlights the importance of integrating LGBTI-related content into nursing curricula and promoting empathy-building activities. These findings underscore the significance of empathy in shaping positive attitudes and emphasize the need for comprehensive educational strategies to promote inclusivity in healthcare.

A Scoping Review of Older LGBTI People's Experiences of Homecare

Amidst the global growth of the ageing demographic in the world, an inclusive assessment of the care needs of the older lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) population is receiving increasing attention, especially in view of reported health inequalities for these minority groups and the position of their sexual orientations and gender identities within a predominantly heteronormative health and social system. This literature review aims to identify and analyse previous research on older LGBTI people’s views, experiences, and perceptions of homecare provision. We searched the CINAHL, Medline, and PsychINFO databases and found a total of 337 records. After an eligibility assessment, 12 studies were selected, comprising 11 qualitative studies, and one mixed methods study. Under an overarching theme of fears of discrimination and of receiving suboptimal care, we further categorised our findings in the following three interlinked subthemes: (a) disclosure of gender identity and sexual orientation; (b) emerging meanings of LGBTI‐competent care; and (c) recommendations for improved quality of LGBTI‐friendly services. The overall surfacing outcome of our analysis of the participants’ experiences described in the studies examined is an aspiration for homecare services ensuring quality of holistic, person‐centred care that recognises this population’s distinct set of requirements, including knowledge and consideration of their histories of inequalities and oppression. Wider awareness about the need to re‐imagine more inclusive care for the LGBTI community has the potential to improve services and practices, reduce access barriers, and prevent inequalities.

La iglesia arcoíris: la apropiación LGBTI del espacio religioso en Lima

The present ethnographic study aims to describe the symbolic strategies in the ritual processes of a religious congregation founded by gay men in Lima. The name of the congregation is Comunidad Cristiana Ecuménica Inclusive El Camino, founded in 2009 by gay men, first evangelicals and, later, gay Catholics. El Camino displays a system of Christian rituals symbolically overlaid with images and symbols of the LGBTI community. By means of deheterosexualized religious symbols in three key spaces, the Sunday worship, the cells and the LGBTI pride parade, they have managed to appropriate and conquer a historically hostile field for the LGBTI community. The symbolic appropriation of the religious space leads to the softening of the Christian moral framework and, specially, the reconciliation between religious beliefs and sexual orientation.

Gambaran Krisis Respon Komunitas LGBTI di Kota Makassar

This research aims to obtain in-depth information about the motives behind the persecution cases of the LGBTI community in Makassar, as well as how the LGBTI community can survive in a society that rejects it. This research method uses ethnographic methods about why and how identity acceptance, group organizing, violence in relationships with partners, legality of partner status, diversity of identity construction, support system responses, and health behaviors are influenced by ethnographic methods, trying to answer what LGBTI communities and support systems do, to whom they do certain actions, and how people, LGBTI communities, and support systems deal with persecution cases as part of actions that violate the law. The results showed that the community is hampered in the acceptance of identity but makes efforts to organize the group; the source of violence comes from socio-economic crush; legally, there is no recognition of the state and citizens; the construction of diversity is not a serious problem; the response of the support system is a vacuum and is still in search of a formula, and community health behavior has not included safe sex. The conclusion of the research is that the LGBTI community is in a state of anxiety, worry, and fear because of the potential for persecution, physical violence, and verbal violence at any time, while the support system, such as the community empowerment office, social service office, health office, village, community association, neighborhood association, religious leaders, community leaders, and community organizations, have not made real efforts such as dialogue or formal meetings for the security and safety of the lives of LGBTI communities.

The Criminological Analysis of Communal Motives on Corrective Rape in African Communities: A Case Study of Pietermaritzburg, Kwa-Zulu Natal

Corrective rape can be defined as a hate crime that entails the rape of any member of a group that does not conform to gender or sexual orientation norms, where the motive of the perpetrator is to “correct” the individual, fundamentally combining gender-based violence and homophobic violence. In South Africa, this type of discriminatory act is more common in rural townships, where women have less independence, education and support systems in place. It is estimated that at least 500 lesbians yearly are victims of corrective rape in South Africa; however, these statistics stand to be inaccurate as societal homophobia keeps many from reporting the crime. This study was completed to ascertain the role of communal motives in corrective rape in African communities, studying the community of Pietermaritzburg which is a city situated in Kwa-Zulu Natal (KZN). A qualitative study was adopted which aimed to analyse and establish the communal motives of African communities in normalizing the practice of corrective rape as a cure to convert homosexuals into heterosexuals. The study took place in the gay–lesbian network centre in Pietermaritzburg where data were gathered from the LGBTIAQ community. The objectives of the study were to assess the nature of the crime, to assess the influence of culture on the normalization of corrective rape as a cure for same-sex sexual attractions, to determine the effects of corrective rape on the LGBTI community, to establish the causes of corrective rape in the community and to determine if the rural community is enlightened about the rights of the LGBTIAQ community. The study also makes use of theoretical framework, including the victim precipitation theory, lifestyle exposure theory and social learning theory to explain and argue the research problem.

Covering inclusion: Frames, themes, and voice in news about LGBTI topics

This article investigates how LGBTI topics are framed in the news and who is given a voice in this coverage by analysing the Dutch-speaking Belgian press. An inductive framing analysis and quantitative content analysis were applied on 1570 articles about LGBTI topics published in 2021 by 13 Dutch-language news outlets. Seven inclusive and two exclusionary frames were discerned. The study shows that primarily gay men serve as voices of the LGBTI community. The findings also indicate that articles are more likely to be framed inclusively when they cite LGBTI people or organisations. Building on the politics of voice and the concepts of valuable and inclusive journalism, this paper argues for journalists and academics to focus on voices that remain unheard in journalism.

Acceptance towards Monkeypox Vaccination: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Vaccination it is considered a vital strategy in order to mitigate monkeypox by protecting from severe disease and helping in reduction of hospitalisations. In this sense, this study aims to estimate the global prevalence of vaccination acceptance against monkeypox. We conducted a systematic review with a comprehensive search strategy for the following databases: PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science. A random-effect model meta-analysis was carried out using observational studies assessing the intention of vaccines against monkeypox from multiple continents. The quality assessment was developed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale adapted for cross-sectional studies. In addition, a subgroup analysis by study location and population and a sensitivity analysis was developed.Eleven cross-sectional studies were included. A total of 8045 participants were included. The pooled prevalence of monkeypox vaccination acceptance in all participants was 56.0% (95%CI: 42.0-70.0%). In the subgroup analysis of monkeypox vaccine acceptance according to continents, the prevalence of vaccine acceptance was 50.0% (95%CI: 24.0-76.0%) in Asian countries and 70.0% (95%CI: 55.0-84.0%) in European countries. The prevalence of vaccine acceptance was 43.0% (95%CI: 35.0-50.0%) in the general population, 63.0% (95%CI: 42.0-70.0%) in healthcare workers, and 84.0% (95%CI: 83.0-86.0%) in the LGBTI community. Despite the high prevalence of monkeypox vaccination acceptance in the LGBTI community found in our study, vaccination acceptance from healthcare workers and the general population are lower. Governments could use these results for planning, developing or promoting vaccination strategies and public health policies focused on these populations.

An exploration of mental distress in transgender people in Ireland with reference to minority stress and dissonance theory

Introduction: Internationally mental distress is more prominent in the LGBTI community than the general population. The LGBTIreland study was set up to take stock of this in the Republic of Ireland. This paper reports on the analysis of the transgender group with reference to minority stress theory and cognitive dissonance theory. Method: An online survey was conducted addressing several aspects of mental health and distress that received responses from all groupings (n = 2,264) among which 12.3% (n = 279) identified as transgender. The survey consisted of several validated tools to measure depression, anxiety, stress (DASS-21), coping (CSES), self-esteem (RSES), alcohol and drugs misuse (AUDIT) and a variety of questions addressing demographics, experiential aspects, coping and self-related factors. Data analysis focused on predicting mental distress using DASS-general (composite of depression, anxiety and stress). Results: Transgender participants reported higher levels of mental distress, self-harm, suicidal ideation and attempts, and lower levels of self-esteem in comparison with the LGB groups, as well as the general population. Hierarchical multiple regression showed that 53% of variance in mental distress could be predicted from reduced self-esteem, the experience of harassment and not belonging in school. Furthermore, mental distress was highest among younger participants, those who were ‘not out’, those who had self-harmed and used avoidant coping. There was no significant difference in distress levels among those who had sought mental health support and those who had not. Conclusions: To understand mental distress in transgender people, the minority stress model is useful when taking into account both adverse external (environmental) and internal (cognitive/emotional) factors. The cognitive dissonance mechanism is essential in outlining the mechanism whereby gender incongruence is associated with psychological discomfort, low self-esteem and high mental distress.

Ensuring equitable, inclusive and meaningful gender identity- and sexual orientation-related data collection in the healthcare sector: insights from a critical, pragmatic systematic review of the literature

In several countries, no gender identity- and sexual orientation-related data is routinely collected, if not for specific health or administrative/social purposes. Implementing and ensuring equitable and inclusive socio-demographic data collection is of paramount importance, given that the LGBTI community suffers from a disproportionate burden in terms of both communicable and non-communicable diseases. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, there exists no systematic review addressing the methods that can be implemented in capturing gender identity- and sexual orientation-related data in the healthcare sector. A systematic literature review was conducted for filling in this gap of knowledge. Twenty-three articles were retained and analysed: two focussed on self-reported data, two on structured/semi-structured data, seven on text-mining, natural language processing, and other emerging artificial intelligence-based techniques, two on challenges in capturing sexual and gender-diverse populations, eight on the willingness to disclose gender identity and sexual orientation, and, finally, two on integrating structured and unstructured data. Our systematic literature review found that, despite the importance of collecting gender identity- and sexual orientation-related data and its increasing societal acceptance from the LGBTI community, several issues have to be addressed yet. Transgender, non-binary identities, and also intersex individuals remain often invisible and marginalized. In the last decades, there has been an increasing adoption of structured data. However, exploiting unstructured data seems to overperform in identifying LGBTI members, especially integrating structured and unstructured data. Self-declared/self-perceived/self-disclosed definitions, while being respectful of one’s perception, may not completely be aligned with sexual behaviours and activities. Incorporating different levels of information (biological, socio-demographic, behavioural, and clinical) would enable overcoming this pitfall. A shift from a rigid/static nomenclature towards a more nuanced, dynamic, ‘fuzzy’ concept of a ‘computable phenotype’ has been proposed in the literature to capture the complexity of sexual identities and trajectories. On the other hand, excessive fragmentation has to be avoided considering that: (i) a full list of options including all gender identities and sexual orientations will never be available; (ii) these options should be easily understood by the general population, and (iii) these options should be consistent in such a way that can be compared among various studies and surveys. Only in this way, data collection can be clinically meaningful: that is to say, to impact clinical outcomes at the individual and population level, and to promote further research in the field.

Multilinguisme et dénominations des minorités dans les rapports annuels d’Amnesty International : communauté LGBTi et personnes déplacées

Dans cette étude, nous analyserons les rapports annuels d'Amnesty International 2016/17, 2017/18 et 2019, dans leurs versions anglaise, française et italienne (deux langues stratégiques, une tactique), afin de montrer les stratégies discursives déployées par Amnesty International dans les différentes langues pour affirmer la nécessité de respect des droits humains fondamentaux et les périls qui guettent leur existence même dans les contextes où l’ONG opère. À la suite d’une présentation générale de ces stratégies discursives et argumentatives dans les trois langues, nous nous pencherons plus dans le détail sur celles utilisées pour nommer (ou ne pas nommer, en poursuivant en cela une stratégie de généralisation, suivant différents moyens selon la langue utilisée) certaines minorités ethniques, religieuses et sociales considérées comme « vulnérables » (Abbas et al., 2019) et dont cette organisation se propose de sauvegarder les droits fondamentaux.Nous nous proposons donc de montrer comment ces nominations et expressions circulent dans les discours traduits, à savoir, leurs cooccurrences, leurs cotextes, leurs emplois et les éventuels écarts de sens entre les différentes versions des rapports.

The illegible and illiterate researcher in Honduras: Research in a transnational setting as a queer from the Global North

In this article, I examine an ongoing qualitative and ethnographic research project in a transnational, multilingual setting. I am not primarily a queer scholar, nor do I study queer issues, gender, or sexuality, as a primary focus in my research agenda or career. However, I am the primary research instrument in these projects, and I am also a person whose language, gender, and sexuality are at times, legible, while also to varying degrees, indecipherable to those around me. Some research projects are in the Central American country of Honduras, and as an academic from the Global North, there are many situations in which I was unable to settings and individuals while in the field. I use narrative inquiry to share and assess this illegibility, both on my part and on the part of people I met in the field. The data set includes fifteen years of living and traveling to Honduras to teach and to conduct research; however, it has never specifically been in LGBTI spaces or with LGBTI communities. Regardless, at the end of each day, my fieldnotes are filled with insight gleaned from my presence as a queer person and interactions within LGBTI communities. This article, and the larger research project in general, came to light because of the ways language, gender, and sexuality—specifically my own language, gender, and sexuality—challenged me in this transnational qualitative research setting.

Anatomizing The Situation Of North Macedonia In Reference To The Human Rights Violations And Configuring The Required Recommendations

Since the beginning of the Republic of North Macedonia, there have been marginalized groups. The LGBTI community, Roma, and women living in North Macedonia have faced various human rights violations for years, including a lack of representation or resources. While the government has attempted to address some of these violations and inequalities through policy, much remains to be addressed. The government must step forward, strengthen its legislation, and provide support to these groups. Roma has historically struggled in many states, with many peoples. The Roma in North Macedonia has experienced various discriminations and rights violations, easily summed up in a pipeline from segregated education to poor health. A step forward for the LGBTI community in North Macedonia, albeit rather complicated, has been the Law on Protection and Prevention of Discrimination. This law was proposed in 2019 to replace its predecessor with a more comprehensive version. It was the first law that explicitly prohibited discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity. This law passed but was quickly repealed, as it initially had not achieved the required majority to pass, amongst additional deliberation. Soon afterwards, Parliament was able to re-establish the law with the necessary majority. The lives of women in North Macedonia are not well protected despite the word of the law. Violence against women has been a prevalent issue and significant public health problem due to the negative impact it has on women’s health, causing physical and psychological damage. The government has taken action to prevent this violence and protect its victims.

Minority Rights in Ukraine After the Maidan Revolution: Change or Continuity?

Abstract This paper explores the state of minority rights in Ukraine following the 2014 Maidan revolution. The Maidan revolution has been largely regarded as the most radical attempt at de-institutionalizing post-Soviet politics and order since 1991 and forging a new Ukrainian nation. Such an endeavor leads us to address a critical question of what the core implications are on minority rights in Ukraine, which encompass religious, ethnic, and sexual minority rights. This analysis places special emphasis on minority religious rights in post-Maidan Ukraine. Findings suggest that the Maidan revolution has not led to substantial policy reform as it pertains to minorities, thus leaving many of their problems unaddressed. While the Maidan aided Ukraine in becoming more “Ukrainian” and reinforced the national identification of the Ukrainian population, it marked a considerable shift in nationalism by ensuing adverse effects on the Russian-speaking population in Eastern Ukraine, as well as on other ethnic and religious minority groups. Moreover, the Ukrainian authorities’ efforts at gaining “spiritual independence” from the Russian Orthodox Church have been met with challenges for religious minority groups. Despite the legislative measures aimed at protecting the rights of LGBTI community, their effective implementation remains a significant and unresolved problem.

From Digital Platforms to Facial Recognition Technologies: Structural Challenges to Women’s Activism

Girls and women face many challenges in engaging in activism across the globe. Both online and in public spaces in our cities, which are increasingly surveilled and monitored by government and law enforcement agencies, women face challenges. In this submission, I would like to draw attention to several issues in particular. First, many countries around the world do have discriminatory face-covering laws, which ban Muslim face coverings in public spaces and thus prevent young women and girl activists from Muslim cultural backgrounds from exercising their rights to freedom of assembly, expression and opinion, among other rights. Second, a lot of public places, including cities and airports, are increasingly equipped with facial recognition technology, which undermines women's activism in city streets and squares. Third, in the digital environment and on media platforms, women from marginalized groups, such as LGBTI communities, face new threats and challenges – their speech and expression are often supressed and also weaponized against them. Furthermore, the rise of large-scale data collection and algorithm-driven analysis targeting sensitive information poses many threats for women activists, especially from LGBTI communities, who are especially vulnerable to privacy intrusion due to their often hostile social, political, and even legal environments. I invite the UN Working Group on Discrimination against Women and Girls to: 1) Call on the UN bodies to enhance their understanding of theory intersectionality. I have recently proposed a way to enhance judicial interpretation of reconceptualizing by reference to a modified concept of “harmful cultural practices”, (paper is freely available on SSRN). 2) Call for a ban on the use of facial recognition technology by governments in public city spaces. 3) Call for the development of binding international human rights law for private actors to remedy the violations of freedom of expression of women activists, especially from LGBTI communities in the digital environment.

Sustainable development goals, rule of law and public policy: implications for the traditional family model

Based on international public policy as an extension of national sovereignty, governments with authoritarian deviations are reforming their constitutions, criminal laws, etc. with the aim of preserving the inalienable values of their States and the Christian roots of their societies (traditional marriage and family model). For this purpose, basing on the vertical conception of SDG 16 (in which the areas of peace and justice are subordinated to the area of strong institutions), they seek to strengthen the state by gradually annulling its “disintegrating factors”: Muslim immigrants and refugees, members of the LGBTI community, leftist politicians, independent journalists and the EU itself (values, legislation and its incipient public policy). The research analyzes this problem affecting the family and its rights .

Access to non-violent pornography in a secure forensic hospital

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to explore non-violent pornography within secure hospital settings.Design/methodology/approachIt includes a systematic review (n = 40 papers), followed by a qualitative study comprising semi-structured interviews (n = 24, 6 patients and 18 staff) and staff focus groups (n = 22 staff).FindingsThe systematic review identified six themes, as follows: pornography is inconsistently defined, pornography exposure can increase general aggression, pornography exposure may increase the risk for sexual aggression, pornography exposure can increase aggression supportive beliefs, pornography exposure impacts negatively on those with a violent predisposition and pornography is educational for men not identifying as heterosexual. The semi-structured interviews and focus groups revealed four themes as follows: staff members hold diverse beliefs about pornographic material, pornography is difficult to obtain and use for patients who do not identify as heterosexual, pornography is used for specific functions, and frequent exposure to pornography can have negative effects for staff members.Practical implicationsTrying to obtain consensus on the impacts of pornography on forensic patients is not possible; material access decisions should be on a case-by-case basis. Policy decisions should be based on fully represented views, including the LGBTI community. The impacts on staff of their occupational exposure to such material should be recognised and support provided. Clinical decision-making in this area should consider not only if access should be allowed but also how it can be managed safely, if at all. This includes for all those who could be exposed to such material, inadvertently or otherwise.Originality/valueIt addresses the under-researched area of patient access to pornography, capturing a poorly considered sample, namely, high secure psychiatric.

Taraidiwa [“We Have Been Raided”]: Effects of and Meanings Ascribed to an Assault on an LGBTI Function in Harare, Zimbabwe

ABSTRACT Drawing on first-hand fieldwork experiences, conversations and interviews, this paper describes and analyses the violent attack on a GALZ event in Zimbabwe in 2014. A gang of unidentifiable men stormed the event and assaulted those present. The paper explores this attack on the LGBTI community in Zimbabwe as a sign, drawing on Peirce’s theorizing of signs as triadic. We describe the emotions, acts and reflections the raid gave rise to, and the intense speculation about who stood behind the attack. The paper demonstrates how precarious sexual minority activism can be in a context of oppression and opposition, and how unsettling and disrupting hate violence can turn out to work.

LGBTI Sexualities and intersectional research

We examine testimonies pertaining to the integration of a gender perspective beyond the dichotomy man-woman into practices of affective-sexual adult learning and education (ALE). We are interested in inclusive practices able to expand voices from specific vulnerable groups against discriminations and multiple oppressions among the aged when belonging to LGBTI Communities. The framework is based on post-feminist contributions, to allow for a democratic understanding of gender equality as well as to integrate population sectors suffering from different types of gender-based violence, such as non-heterosexual, trans and intersex people. The narrative literature review method was chosen, and international scientific search engines and databases were consulted to find literature in Portuguese, Spanish and English. A total of 25 educational interventions were selected for analysis. To discuss the data, we resorted to Barragán’s (1996) theoretical models.
