Vedic astrological factors for human immunodeficiency virus transmission within male individuals with sexual orientation as homosexual

Background: For almost more than 70 years, the modern science had labeled homosexuality as a mental disorder and was part of DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders) until the fifth edition was released in the year 2013 and homosexuality was removed from the mental disorder list. Despite of the removal of homosexuality along with all kind of sexual orientation from mental disorder, it is still being considered taboo in the society. From Sanatana Dharma perspective, homosexuality is very well mentioned in multiple scriptures. In Vedic Astrology as well, this homosexuality along with diseases due to sexual intercourse is being described. In this modern era, one of the most common disease due to sexual intercourse is HIV. Although, HIV is considered relatively new transmission due to its first scientific mention in the late twentieth century, the symptoms and overall nature of this disease is clearly described in Vedic Astrology. Finding: This research paper is an extension of the existing research paper in the field of Vedic Astrology especially in the field of Vedic Astrology focusing on HIV transmission. A total of 314 HIV positive samples was collected from 18 countries selected from Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Africa as well as Australia in order to have a coverage of all the continents. All these HIV positive people belong to LGBT community, to be very specific Gay (homosexuals) and have been identified as HIV transmission due to anal intercourse with another Gay partner. The Astrological Natal Chart were analyzed for all these 314 samples against the KIRAN sutra (5 thumb rules) to find the possibility of HIV based on the sutras i.e. rules. Out of 314 samples, 310 charts fit the criteria (KIRA sutra) mentioned in the KIRAN sutra for HIV transmission. 4 samples were not checked against the criteria (N) due to insufficient Nakshatra-Pada i.e. Constellation-Phase coverage along with the complex nature of the Nakshatra sutra i.e. N sutra of KIRAN sutra. The result indicates that the KIRAN sutra is very effective sutra even to identify the HIV transmission from male-to-male partner with an accuracy of 98.73% (310 cases out of 314 cases) using only 4 sutras i.e. KIRA. Conclusion: The research is an effort to raise awareness and to help males with homosexual orientation to identify whether they are highly prone to HIV or not using their Vedic Astrological Natal Chart so that they can take preventive action. A new yoga i.e. Samalaingika Yauna Sankramaṇa Yoga is being introduced in the field of Medical Astrology focusing on males with sexual orientation as homosexual, commonly known as Gay in LGBT community in order to support Gays living a HIV free life without judging their sexual orientation. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study introduces the application of the KIRAN sutra from Vedic Astrology as a predictive method for assessing HIV transmission risk in homosexual men, achieving an accuracy rate of 98.73%, along with the introduction of a new configuration, Samalaingika Yauna Sankramaṇa Yoga.

Emotional Intelligence Profiles among Lesbians, Gays and Bisexuals (LGB) People: Their Influence on Mental Health, Life Satisfaction, Self-esteem and the Development of Sexual Identity

Abstract Introduction Many studies have focused recently on the negative impact of homophobia or biphobia, seeking to identify protective factors for the LGB (lesbian, gay, and bisexual) community. Methods The present study aims to identify emotional intelligence (EI) profiles among a sample of 1215 LGB people in order to determine whether significant differences exist between them in terms of mental health, life satisfaction, self-esteem, and the development of sexual identity. To analyse the differential effect of EI on the variables, four cluster profiles were defined by combining the three dimensions of EI (attention, clarity, and repair). The first profile had low levels in all three dimensions; the second had high attention and low repair; the third had high general EI and the fourth had low attention and high repair. Results Significant differences were observed among profiles (p < .001; η2 = 0.126). Those with high EI indexes reported less anxiety and depression and had better levels of self-esteem, life satisfaction and acceptance of their non-normative sexual identity. Those with low rates in all areas of EI or high levels of attention were at risk of developing psycho-emotional problems. Discussion We can conclude that different EI profiles exist among LGB community and that these profiles influence mental health, life satisfaction and self-esteem outcomes and identity development in different ways. Policy Implications The findings reported here have practical policy implications for psychoeducational proposals and interventions aimed at improving the experiences of LGB people, particularly in terms of promoting individual characteristics that can help them cope with systematic oppression, such as emotion repair.

A General Concave Fairness Framework for Influence Maximization Based on Poverty Reward

Influence maximization (IM) aims to find a group of influential nodes as initial spreaders to maximize the influence spread over a network. Yet, traditional IM algorithms have not been designed with fairness in mind, resulting in discrimination against some groups, like LGBTQ communities and racial minorities, etc. This issue has spurred research on Fair Influence Maximization (FIM). However, existing FIM studies come with some drawbacks. Firstly, most proposed notions of fairness for FIM cannot adjust the trade-off between fairness level and influence spread. Secondly, though a few specific notions of fairness allow such balancing, they are limited to a few specific concave functions, which may not be suitable for various real-world scenarios. Furthermore, none of them have studied the deep relations between the features of concave functions and the level of fairness. Thirdly, existing fairness metrics are limited to their corresponding concepts of fairness. Comparing the level of fairness across different algorithms using existing metrics can be challenging. To tackle the above problems, this paper first proposes a novel fairness notion named Poverty Reward (PR), which achieves fairness by rewarding the enrichment of groups with low utility. Based on PR, we further propose an algorithmic framework called Concave Fairness Framework (CFF) that allows any concave function that satisfies specific requirements. We also systematically clarify how fairness is improved by applying concave functions and provide an in-depth quantitative analysis of how to select appropriate concave functions for different utility distributions. Moreover, we propose the Reward of Fairness (RoF) metric that evaluates the disparity between groups. Based on RoF, an evaluation system is built to uniformly compare FIM algorithms from different fairness notions. Experiments in real-world datasets have demonstrated the validity of the CFF, as well as the proposed fairness notion.

Undergraduate Research Science Capital: Measuring capacity to engage in research.

Undergraduate research has been identified as a high-impact educational practice. However, despite the body of evidence on the outcomes of undergraduate research, few studies have focused on the influences students face regarding participation. Developed using Science Capital and Social Cognitive Career Theory, a survey comprised of potential influences to undergraduate science research participation was disseminated to science majors at four R1 institutions in the Southeastern United States. Participation rates across several demographic factors and effect of participation influences were analysed. Results reveal a significantly greater proportion of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Plus (LGBTQ+) and disability communities indicating participating in research than their peers. Additionally, fourteen participation influences were identified as having a significant difference in their level of influence to the ability to participate in research between researchers and non-researchers. These include professor influence, interest in research, interest in science, coursework in the major, and major all being rated as opportunities with a significant difference of effect between researchers and those who have not yet participated in research. The results of this study will be beneficial for science departments and their respective institutions to improve the equity of access to their undergraduate research experiences.

Pernikahan Sesama Jenis: Tinjauan Hak dan Kewajiban Berdasarkan Undang-Undang Perkawinan

In the context of Indonesian law, marriage is defined as a bond between a man and a woman, which explicitly closes the possibility of recognition of same-sex marriage. In the midst of international developments that increasingly recognize the rights of same-sex couples, Indonesia still maintains a conservaative view influenced by religious and social norms. This study aims to analyze Indonesia’s Law No. 16 of 2019 on Marriage in the context of the rights and obligations of married couples and whether there is potential recognition for same-sex marriage in Indonesia. The law defines marriage as a union between a man and a woman, excluding the possibility of recognizing same-sex marriages. The study employs normative legal research with legislative and conceptual approaches. The findings reveal that provisions such as the minimum age for marriage, dispensation, and marriage authorization are only applicable to heterosexual couples. The rights established in the law, including protection from violence and access to healthcare, do not cover same-sex couples due to the absence of legal recognition. The conclusion emphasizes the existing inequality in access to civil rights in Indonesia, particularly for the LGBT community. While challenges remain from conservative social and religious norms, discussions on potential future revisions to marriage law remain open, particularly within the framework of equality and non-discrimination.

Religious Nationalism and The Legal Rejection of LGBT Rights in Zambia: Examining the Intersection of Religion, Law, And Social Exclusion

In the 21st century, national identities are shaped by more than just belonging to a nation-state; factors such as ethnicity, culture, gender, and religion also play a significant role. Individuals can align themselves with imagined communities, where national identity exists only in the mind. However, when religion becomes a symbol of national identity, it often leads to the rejection of beliefs that contradict religious values. This paper explores the influence of religious nationalism on the social rejection of LGBT rights in Zambia. Through a review of various theories of nationalism and an analysis of the conflicts between state, ethnic, and religious nationalisms, the paper highlights how strong religious identities can foster hostility toward LGBT communities. Zambia, a Christian nation by constitutional declaration, exemplifies how religious nationalism enables the criminalization of homosexuality, described as an unnatural offense punishable by imprisonment. The conclusion demonstrates that religious nationalism not only conflicts with LGBT rights but also fuels social rejection, leading to stigma and legal consequences for LGBT individuals in Zambia.

Information Seeking and Sharing Among LGBTQ University Students: Dynamics Within LGBTQ Communities on Social Media

In my dissertation research, I investigate the nuanced dynamics between LGBTQ university students and social media platform design, identifying the facilitators and obstacles they encounter while seeking and sharing information in online communities. This study serves a dual purpose: to explore the information-seeking and sharing experiences of LGBTQ students on social media, and to analyze platform design aspects that either enhance or hinder these information behaviors. By addressing both elements, the research aims to provide a holistic understanding of information practices within LGBTQ online communities and offer actionable recommendations to improve social media design, fostering a supportive environment for LGBTQ students. Adopting an exploratory mixed-methods approach, I employ both qualitative methods (i.e., initial interviews, diaries, and follow-up interviews) and quantitative method (i.e., online survey questionnaires) to collect data. Integrating qualitative and quantitative methods ensures a thorough exploration of the topic, offering nuanced insights into LGBTQ students’ online experiences. The dissertation holds both theoretical and practical significance. It advances our understanding of LGBTQ students’ information behaviors within online communities and examines the interplay between social media platform features and these behaviors. Practically, the research provides valuable insights for LGBTQ organizations, community administrators, and social media developers. By addressing the unique information needs of LGBTQ students and enhancing social media platform design, this study facilitates the creation of inclusive, supportive, and user-friendly online environments for LGBTQ individuals.

From online hate speech to offline hate crime: the role of inflammatory language in forecasting violence against migrant and LGBT communities

Social media messages often provide insights into offline behaviors. Although hate speech proliferates rapidly across social media platforms, it is rarely recognized as a cybercrime, even when it may be linked to offline hate crimes that typically involve physical violence. This paper aims to anticipate violent acts by analyzing online hate speech (hatred, toxicity, and sentiment) and comparing it to offline hate crime. The dataset for this preregistered study included social media posts from X (previously called Twitter) and Facebook and internal police records of hate crimes reported in Spain between 2016 and 2018. After conducting preliminary data analysis to check the moderate temporal correlation, we used time series analysis to develop computational models (VAR, GLMNet, and XGBTree) to predict four time periods of these rare events on a daily and weekly basis. Forty-eight models were run to forecast two types of offline hate crimes, those against migrants and those against the LGBT community. The best model for migrant crime achieved an R2 of 64%, while that for LGBT crime reached 53%. According to the best ML models, the weekly aggregations outperformed the daily aggregations, the national models outperformed those geolocated in Madrid, and those about migration were more effective than those about LGBT people. Moreover, toxic language outperformed hatred and sentiment analysis, Facebook posts were better predictors than tweets, and in most cases, speech temporally preceded crime. Although we do not make any claims about causation, we conclude that online inflammatory language could be a leading indicator for detecting potential hate crimes acts and that these models can have practical applications for preventing these crimes.

Rainbow within and beyond: A qualitative study on the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender staff nurses in the Philippine hospital settings.

An individual's sexual orientation plays a fundamental role in their self-identity, relationships, and health. Years have shown both progressive and regressive responses to the LGBT community's social acceptance, particularly observable in various areas. Yet existing literature overlooks the Filipino healthcare settings, particularly with lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) staff nurses. Exploring their perspectives and experiences, whether challenges or successes, is crucial for gaining insights into occupational matters, workplace dynamics, and policy development. The research aimed to explore the lived experiences of LGBT staff nurses in the hospital settings. Husserl's Transcendental Phenomenology research design was utilized in this study. Participants included LGBT staff nurses with at least a year of experience at any hospital department. Individualized unstructured interviews were conducted with three participants interviewed face-to-face and five through online video conferencing platforms from March to April 2024. All interviews were transcribed, coded, themed, and analyzed using Colaizzi's approach. Data saturation was achieved with eight participants. Seven themes emerged, including: Recognizing Gender Stereotypes, Optimizing Nursing Care, Yearning for Acceptance, Generating Meaningful Relationships, Battling Heteronormative Gender Norms, Inspiring Potentials beyond Gender and Profession, and Valuing the Progress of LGBT Inclusivity. The study revealed that LGBT staff nurses had multifaceted experiences with patients, colleagues, and superiors in the hospital settings as their workplace. They faced gender stereotyping and battled against limits on expression but fought to defend their authentic identities. They built relationships with colleagues and strived to be defined beyond societal perceptions. As they yearn for amplified LGBT acceptance in the workplace and society, they expressed gratitude for progress towards acceptance of the LGBT community.

Dual Narratives, Shared Radiance: A Tropical Asian Queer Collaborative Autoethnography

Employing a tropical Asian queer collaborative autoethnographic approach, this article explores the unique narratives of two diasporic researchers hailing from the Philippines and Taiwan. The paper elucidates the voices, perceptions, and lived experiences of the authors and shows how these align with Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory of human development, which asserts that individuals are influenced by their socio-cultural environment comprised of the macrosystem, exosystem, mesosystem, and microsystem. The relationship of these overlapping systems is explored through the lives of the two researcher-authors through personal narratives. These narratives accentuate the methodological queering aspect, employing personal vignettes as pivotal focal points. By intertwining subjective experiences within the socio-ecological systems model, the article seeks to vividly depict the knottiness of tropical Asian queer identity and experience. Through this exploration, the discourse not only enquires into the intricacies of the researcher-authors’ stories but also contributes to a broader understanding of how queer socio-cultural factors shape the diverse narratives within the queer community in tropical Asia.

Mental well-being of sexual minority individuals: Exploring the role of intraminority stress

AbstractThe recently posed intraminority gay community stress theory states that sexual minority (SM) men may experience stress within their community resulting in lower levels of mental well-being. However, only few quantitative studies have evaluated this theory, and none of these studies examined the impact of intraminority stress on the mental well-being of SM female populations. In Dutch-speaking SM individuals who were assigned male at birth (N = 293) and SM individuals who were assigned female at birth (N = 527), this exploratory study examined associations between the four facets of intraminority stress and five mental health symptoms. When controlling for demographics and minority stress, intraminority stress was positively associated with psychological distress, body dissatisfaction, and interpersonal awareness in both SM male and SM female individuals, while positive associations with timidity were only found in the latter. As for the intraminority stress facets, particularly the SM community’s focus on competition and exclusion of social diversity seem to impact the mental well-being of SM individuals. The results support the notion that intraminority stress – along with minority stress – has important value in explaining mental health problems in SM male and SM female populations. Future research may examine how intraminority stress relates to the protective effects of community connectedness and having a sense of belonging, and to what extent and how intraminority stress should be addressed in interventions for stress-sensitive mental health symptoms in SM populations.

LGBT employees in state agencies and their creation of psychological meaningfulness

The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore how LGBT employees in state government agencies described how they created their own meaningfulness in the workplace in the US. The theoretical foundation for this study was the Employee Engagement theory by Kahn [Acad Manag J 33(4):692–724, 1990]. Purposive sampling was used to identify 43 questionnaires and 15 semi-structured interviews. Data were then coded and thematically analyzed to answer the research question. Findings revealed LGBT state employees created their psychological meaningfulness by ensuring that they make an impact or difference at work, and by connecting with other people or colleagues. Limitations include the research method and bias. Future research is recommended to explore how other groups within the LGBT community create their psychological meaningfulness.

Monetized Interactions in the Sexual Minorities Network at Daneshjoo Park (Tehran, Iran)

AbstractDaneshjoo Park is located in the center of Tehran and is the first hang-out for modern life in the city, gathering different communities such as students, artists, and various lifestyles. Over the years, it has become the most famous hang-out for LGBTQ communities. Despite its significance and hundreds of visitors per day from different parts of the country, Daneshjoo Park has faced years of neglect. This study, employing grounded theory as a research method and in-depth interview as a gathering data method, investigates the emergence of sex work in the park. Participants, aged 18–40, active or retired sex workers, were selected using theoretical and snowball sampling. The findings highlight that underlying individual circumstances, such as poverty, act as catalysts for creating conditions conducive to engaging in sex work, referred to as “Individual Background Conditions.” These conditions facilitate entry into the social network of sex workers, thereby enabling the manifestation of the phenomenon of sex work within Daneshjoo Park, where individuals are gravitated to engage in sex work. The study identifies “Actualizing Interaction Conditions” as the supportive and reproductive causal mechanism through which the network operates, bringing individuals with these background conditions into the fold. This mechanism has enabled the manifestation of the phenomenon of sex work within Daneshjoo Park. The research also identifies a significant historical shift, termed the “Historical Factor,” indicating a transition in the logic of interaction from traditional forms of interaction to monetary exchanges, which has fundamentally altered the landscape of sex work in the park. Ultimately, the study suggests social empowerment strategies as a response to these findings.

Legalization of LGBT Marriage: Case Study from Vietnam

LGBT marriage is a legal union between two individuals of the same sex, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. This type of marriage recognizes the equal rights of all people to marry regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. In Vietnam, the legal status of LGBT marriage has been the subject of considerable discussion and debate. Although the country has made significant strides in improving the rights of LGBT people, there is still a lack of official legal recognition for same-sex marriage. To date, same-sex marriage has not been explicitly legalized nor fully protected under Vietnamese law. This means that although same-sex marriages are not criminalized, and people have their free will to live together and hold ceremonies, yet these marriages do not hold the same legal status and rights as compared to heterosexual marriages. Vietnam has a strong cultural background and conservative beliefs; these play a crucial role in society in respect to the views within it when it comes to LGBT individuals. Society is becoming more tolerant; however, the LGBT community members are still judged with a high rate of discrimination. Although acceptance still significantly varies between regions and different age groups, public opinion is indeed softening, especially among the young. Due to the legal recognition, LGBT marriages provided them with equal legal rights and responsibilities concerning property, inheritance, adoption, and healthcare, just like heterosexual couples. On the other hand, this also can be regarded as another critical step to social inclusion and the fight against discrimination. This research will discuss the current situation of same-sex marriage in contemporary Vietnam with the aim of completing the picture of the LGBT community. The research study will also interview 22 LGBT individuals and a survey of close to 200 participants.

Of Queerness and Caregiving: Family, Emotional Labor and Livability in India

What does it mean to be queer, a care seeker and a caregiver in India? This article, an auto-ethnographic, self-reflexive account, thinks through this question, while charting the history of the emergence of a queer citizenship in India. Analyzing a contested, yet loving relationship between an aging and ailing mother and a queer AMAB (assigned male at birth) son, also the former’s primary caregiver, the article locates the nuances of being queer within a largely homophobic society, through a personal testimony spanning two decades, and ending with the COVID-19 pandemic. In the process, the article decodes the ever-changing ambivalent relationship of the queer citizen subject with the Indian nation-state, roughly from the time when the first petition for scrapping Sec. 377 of the India Penal Code was filed at the Delhi High Court. This ambivalent relationship continues to massively impact emotional lives and labor expended in the act of caregiving and cohabitation with the natal family, particularly, when the heteronormative family breaks down, as in the case of the author. The life story narrated, while foregrounding queer victimization makes way for optimism as well – significantly lacking within the Indian queer community – for a relatively livable life.

When the Pretending Stopped: Queer World-Making in New Orleans Press Coverage of the AIDS Crisis, 1985–1991

ABSTRACT This research explores the press coverage of the AIDS epidemic in New Orleans from 1985 to 1991, a period marked by transformative political and social shifts within the gay and lesbian community. After a period of unprecedented visibility in the late 1970s, the gay and lesbian people of New Orleans had a new enemy to contend with in the early 1980s—the AIDS virus. This study investigates two newspapers’ responses and the evolution of narratives and perspectives presented by each. While the New Orleans daily newspaper the Times-Picayune initially echoed national narratives, decentering gay and lesbian individuals from the AIDS story, the New Orleans gay and lesbian newspaper Impact constructed counternarratives, disrupting stereotypes and showcasing individual lives affected by AIDS. By 1986, mainstream coverage began mirroring the gay press, reflecting a shift toward nuanced storytelling. Using issues of Impact, along with coverage from the Times-Picayune and an oral history with reporter John Pope, this research provides insights into the role of Impact in queer world-making and counternarrative construction in New Orleans during this period.

Disparities in Health Outcomes in Surgical Oncology.

Cancer health disparities refer to the unequal burden, treatment, and outcomes of cancer care experienced by specific populations. These disparities are systemic and often preventable, impacting diverse populations, including racial and ethnic minorities, medically underserved populations, populations in rural areas, individuals from the LGBT communities, disabled persons, extremes of age, and those living in persistent poverty. Addressing this topic is essential and timely to ensure equitable oncologic outcomes for all populations. Experts in surgical oncology and health disparities have collaborated to produce this seminar issue on Disparities in Surgical Oncology.

Coming Out for Community, Coming Out for the Cause

Abstract This article focuses on the life experience and political activism of Palestinian American lesbian activist Huda Jadallah as a representative example of how lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT/queer) Arab Americans came out to both queer communities and Arab American communities in the 1980s and 1990s. The author argues that this dual outness was utilized as a strategy through which to accomplish three interrelated aims: to build a queer Arab American community, utilize that community as a starting point from which to challenge anti-Arab racism within queer communities, and challenge homophobia in Arab American communities. Based on an oral history interview with Jadallah, in conjunction with analysis of Jadallah’s personal ephemera collection, this article takes a queer archiving methodological approach to consider how outness as strategy may also be utilized with regard to queer Arab American archiving and history.

Agreement with “The ethical guidelines on the provision and practice of advanced reproductive technology and intrauterine insemination 2023” by the Philippine Society of Reproductive Medicine using online Delphi technique

The ethical guidelines of the National Society of Certified Fertility Specialists, the Philippine Society for Reproductive Medicine, were reviewed 5 years after its publication to determine if there was a change in the views of the current members. The 2016 guideline document was converted into 75 Delphi statements, and the level of agreement with each statement was determined after 3 rounds. One hundred twenty-six members of the national society were invited to participate. Voting was conducted using an online Google form or using a self-administered printed questionnaire. The level of agreement with each statement was measured using a 5-point Likert scale. A panel discussion of speakers in theology, law, and medical ethics, as well as stakeholders represented by an infertility patient and from the LGBTQ community, was held before the last Delphi round. The response rate for the first Delphi round was 94%, and the second and third rounds were at 98%. A consensus was achieved in 66 of the 75 Delphi statements. Statements on preimplantation genetic testing, posthumous reproduction, cryopreservation, and third-party reproduction failed to achieve consensus.

The HIV Environmental Riskscape: The Roles of HIV Sexual Risk and Resilience Factors among Black Men Who Have Sex with Men: Findings from the Real Talk Project.

Black and African American men who have sex with men (Black MSM) experience the greatest proportion of new HIV infections in the United States. To address this challenge, a better understanding of the HIV environment riskscape including both risk and resilience factors is warranted among Black MSM. Research indicates that stress is associated with increased HIV sexual risk behaviors. Further, behavioral factors such as serosorting and community level factors including social support and community connection are resilience factors that protect against risk behaviors. The present study examines whether everyday stress is associated with HIV sexual risk behavior, as well as the role of risk and resilience factors among 125 Black MSM recruited in the Real Talk study. The Real Talk project examined the relationships between resilience, HIV risk behaviors, and HIV prevention strategy among a sample of Black MSM. Using generalized estimating equations, our results indicate a positive association between everyday stress and engaging in condomless anal intercourse only after adjusting for risk, resilience, and correlate variables. Similarly, having multiple sex partners and using substances during sex also show positive associations with condomless anal intercourse. Resilience factors of engaging in serosorting and being connected to both the Black and gay communities were negatively associated with condomless anal intercourse. Future prevention research and programming should focus on both risk and resilience factors to mitigate new HIV infections among Black MSM.
