Composition and fatty acid profile of milk from cows fed diets supplemented with raw and n-3 PUFA-enriched fish oil

Dietary supplementation of ruminants with fish oil is a strategy for favorably modifying the fatty acid composition of milk fat. This study investigated the effect of supplementing cows’ diet with fish oil after low-temperature crystallisation (LTC-FO) compared to its raw form (FO) on milk yield, milk components (fat, protein, and lactose), and milk fatty acid profile. Twenty-four mid-lactating multiparous Polish Holstein–Friesian cows fed a total-mix ration were randomly assigned to two homogeneous groups (n = 12 cows each) and supplemented with LTC-FO or FO at 1% of dry matter. Milk samples were collected on days 14 and 30 of the 30-day experiment. No significant differences between the groups in terms of milk yield, milk protein, and lactose content were found, however, the fat yield and content decreased in the LTC-FO group. Milk fat from cows in the LTC-FO group contained significantly higher levels of C18:1 trans-11, C18:2 cis-9, trans-11, C18:3n − 3, C20:5, and C22:6, and lower levels of saturated fatty acids compared to the FO group (p < 0.05). Therefore, LTC-FO may be a more efficient feed additive than FO and may serve as a practical way to modify the fatty acid composition of milk fat.

Nutritional value of meat from selected neotropical reptiles

This is the second part of a two-part review. The first part focused on the nutritive value of meat and meat products of selected neo-tropical mammals with the potential for domestication. The objective of this current review was to investigate the nutritional qualities and carcass traits of selected neotropical reptiles compared to domestic species, focusing on the spectacled caiman, iguana, tegu, and yellow anaconda. Carcass weight analysis revealed that the spectacled caiman and male iguana were efficient converters of live weight to edible carcass weight, with higher yields than other reptiles. Among domestic species, pigs and chickens showed higher carcass yields compared to cattle and lamb. Moisture content in reptile meat was generally higher than in domestic animals, impacting texture and juiciness. Protein content was lower in reptiles but still contributed to daily requirements, while fat content, though generally lower in reptiles, could impact flavor and tenderness. Cholesterol levels were lower in reptiles, particularly the yellow anaconda, making them potentially healthier options for those with cardiovascular concerns. Fatty acid composition analysis indicated varying levels of saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids, with potential cardiovascular health benefits in reptile meats. Amino acid content, though lower in reptiles compared to domestic species, provided essential building blocks for various physiological functions. Overall, the study highlighted the nutritional value and potential health benefits of including neotropical reptile meat in the human diet, especially as alternative protein sources.

Association of circulation very long chain saturated fatty acids with depression in NHANES 2011–2014

BackgroundRecent studies have shown that elevated levels of medium and long chain saturated fatty acids are associated with an increased risk of depression. However, little is known about the effect of very long chain saturated fatty acids (VLSFAs) on depression. Therefore, our study aimed to examine the association between VLSFAs and depression in the US adult population. MethodsA total of 2706 participants with serum VLSFAs detection from NHANES 2011–2014 were included in the study. Logistic regression models were used to evaluate the association between quartile levels of serum VLSFAs (20:0, 22:0, 23:0, 24:0, and total VLSFA) and depression. ResultsAfter adjusting for multiple variables, we found that increased circulating levels of 22:0, 23:0, 24:0 and total VLSFA were linearly associated with a reduced risk of depression (model 3, Q4 OR: 0.658, 95 % CI: 0.438–0.989, P-trend = 0.023; OR: 0.515, 95 % CI: 0.339–0.782, P-trend<0.001; OR: 0.556, 95 % CI: 0.370–0.835, P-trend = 0.003; OR: 0.652, 95 % CI: 0.435–0.976, P-trend = 0.021, respectively). Additionally, individuals with the highest serum ratios of 22:0/16:0, 23:0/16:0, 24:0/16:0 and total VLSFA/16:0 also had a lower risk of depression after adjusting for multiple variables compared to the group with the lowest serum VLSFAs/16:0 (P-trend = 0.001, <0.001, 0.001 and 0.004, respectively). Moreover, the decreasing trend of depression associated with increased VLSFAs/18:0 remained significant. ConclusionIn conclusion, our findings suggest that increased circulating levels of 22:0, 23:0, 24:0 and total VLSFA may have a protective effect against the risk of depression.

Plasma fatty acids and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: a Mendelian randomization investigation.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most common neurodevelopmental disorder of childhood, and pathogenesis is not fully understood. Observational studies suggest an association between fatty acids abnormalities and ADHD, but there are contradictions and differences between these findings. To address this uncertainty, we employed a two-sample bidirectional Mendelian Randomization (MR) analysis to investigate the causal relationship between fatty acids and ADHD. We conducted a two-sample Mendelian Randomization (MR) study, selecting single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) highly correlated with fatty acid levels from the CHARGE Consortium as our instruments. The outcome data were sourced from the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium (PGC) dataset on ADHD, comprising 225,534 individuals, with 162,384 cases and 65,693 controls. Inverse variance weighting, MR-Egger, and weighted median methods were employed to estimate the causal relationship between fatty acids and ADHD. Cochran's Q-test was used to quantify heterogeneity of instrumental variables. Sensitivity analyses included MR-Egger intercept tests, leave-one-out analyses, and funnel plots. The MR analysis revealed no significant associations between genetically predicted levels of various saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acids (including omega-3 and omega-6) and ADHD risk in the CHARGE and PGC cohorts. Notably, an initial association with Dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA) (OR = 1.009, p = 0.032 by IVW) did not persist after correction for multiple testing (adjusted p-value = 0.286). Sensitivity analysis supported our findings, indicating robustness. Moreover, there was a lack of evidence supporting a causal link from ADHD to fatty acids. While our study on the basis of genetic data does not provide evidence to support the causal role of fatty acids in ADHD, it does not preclude their potential involvement in reducing the risk of ADHD. Further research is needed to explore this possibility.

Circulating fatty acids and risk of hepatocellular carcinoma and chronic liver disease mortality in the UK Biobank

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-based plasma fatty acids are objective biomarkers of many diseases. Herein, we aim to explore the associations of NMR-based plasma fatty acids with the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and chronic liver disease (CLD) mortality in 252,398 UK Biobank participants. Here we show plasma levels of n-3 poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and n-6 PUFA are negatively associated with the risk of incident HCC [HRQ4vsQ1: 0.48 (95% CI: 0.33–0.69) and 0.48 (95% CI: 0.28–0.81), respectively] and CLD mortality [HRQ4vsQ1: 0.21 (95% CI: 0.13–0.33) and 0.15 (95% CI: 0.08–0.30), respectively], whereas plasma levels of saturated fatty acids are positively associated with these outcomes [HRQ4vsQ1: 3.55 (95% CI: 2.25–5.61) for HCC and 6.34 (95% CI: 3.68–10.92) for CLD mortality]. Furthermore, fibrosis stage significantly modifies the associations between PUFA and CLD mortality. This study contributes to the limited prospective evidence on the associations between plasma-specific fatty acids and end-stage liver outcomes.

Influence of seasons and fish body parts on fatty acid profile and effect of seasons on proximate composition of Anatolian khramulya (Capoeta tinca) and Colchic khramulya (Capoeta sieboldii) captured from the Çekerek Dam in Yozgat, Turkey

Seasonal variations in nutrient content and fatty acid (FA) composition within the dorsal, ventral, caudal and whole muscle tissues of Capoeta sieboldii and Capoeta tinca, which were captured from the Çekerek Dam in Yozgat, Turkey, were investigated. The nutrient and fatty acid compositions of C. sieboldii and C. tinca changed according to the seasons and different body regions. Proximate compositions in these two fish species were 15.78–18.38 % protein, 1.19–2.65 % lipid, 78.42–81.25 % moisture, and 1.02–1.20% ash. The highest levels of saturated FA (SFA) were recorded in both C. sieboldii (26.94 %) and C. tinca (28.32 %) in the autumn, specifically in the ventral region. The highest monounsaturated FA (MUFA) values of C. sieboldii and C. tinca were observed in spring in ventral (31.30 %) and caudal (31.89 %) regions, respectively. The highest polyunsaturated FA (PUFA) values were 30.90 % (ventral) in winter for C. sieboldii and 33.95 % (dorsal) in autumn for C. tinca. The atherogenic index, thrombogenic index, n–6/n–3 FA ratio, and hypocholesterolemic/hypercholesterolemic ratio of C. sieboldii and C. tinca in this study were 0.42–0.67, 0.24–0.37, 0.10–0.34, and 1.34–2.23, respectively. These fish species represent valuable food sources for human health and nutrition.

Effects of Supplementing Tributyrin on Meat Quality Characteristics of Foreshank Muscle of Weaned Small-Tailed Han Sheep Lambs.

This experiment aimed to evaluate the effects of supplementing tributyrin (TB) on the meat quality characteristics of foreshank muscle of weaned lambs. A total of 30 healthy weaned Small-Tailed Han female lambs with body weights ranging from 23.4 to 31.6 kg were selected and randomly divided into five groups, and each group consisted of 6 lambs. The control group was fed a basic total mixed ration, while other groups were fed the same ration supplemented with 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0 g/kg TB, respectively. The experiment lasted 75 d, including 15 d of adaptation. Foreshank muscle obtained at the same position from each lamb was used for chemical analysis and sensory evaluation. The results showed that supplementing TB increased the muscle contents of ether extract (p = 0.029), calcium (p = 0.030), phosphorus (p = 0.007), and intermuscular fat length (p = 0.022). Besides, TB increased the muscle pH (p = 0.001) and redness (p < 0.001) but reduced the lightness (p < 0.001), drip loss (p = 0.029), cooking loss (p < 0.001), shear force (p = 0.001), hardness (p < 0.001), cohesiveness (p < 0.001), springiness (p < 0.001), gumminess (p < 0.001), and chewiness (p < 0.001). In addition, TB increased the muscle content of inosine-5'-phosphate (p = 0.004). Most importantly, TB increased the muscle contents of essential amino acids (p < 0.001). Furthermore, TB increased the saturated fatty acids level in the muscle (p < 0.001) while decreasing the unsaturated fatty acids content (p < 0.001). In conclusion, supplementing TB could influence the meat quality of foreshank muscle of weaned lambs by modifying the amino acid and fatty acid levels.

IL-33 Reduces Saturated Fatty Acid Accumulation in Mouse Atherosclerotic Foci.

The cellular and molecular mechanisms of atherosclerosis are still unclear. Type 2 innate lymphocytes (ILC2) exhibit anti-inflammatory properties and protect against atherosclerosis. This study aimed to elucidate the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis development using atherosclerosis model mice (ApoE KO mice) and mice deficient in IL-33 receptor ST2 (ApoEST2 DKO mice). Sixteen-week-old male ApoE KO and ApoEST2 DKO mice were subjected to an 8-week regimen of a high-fat, high-sucrose diet. Atherosclerotic foci were assessed histologically at the aortic valve ring. Chronic inflammation was assessed using flow cytometry and real-time polymerase chain reaction. In addition, saturated fatty acids (palmitic acid) and IL-33 were administered to human aortic endothelial cells (HAECs) to assess fatty acid metabolism. ApoEST2 DKO mice with attenuated ILC2 had significantly worse atherosclerosis than ApoE KO mice. The levels of saturated fatty acids, including palmitic acid, were significantly elevated in the arteries and serum of ApoEST2 DKO mice. Furthermore, on treating HAECs with saturated fatty acids with or without IL-33, the Oil Red O staining area significantly decreased in the IL-33-treated group compared to that in the non-treated group. IL-33 potentially prevented the accumulation of saturated fatty acids within atherosclerotic foci.

Comparative Analysis of Fatty Acids Concentration in Liver and Muscle Tissues of Rats and Mice

This study conducted a comparative analysis of fatty acids (FAs) concentration derived from polar (PL) and non-polar (NPL) lipids in the liver and muscle tissues of rats and mice. The objective was to elucidate species-specific differences in tissue FA distribution. Employing targeted GC/MS-based methodology, the study aimed to provide insights into conserved and species-specific aspects of lipid metabolism, thereby enhancing future experimental design, linked with comprehension of the interactions between diet, metabolism, and health. Results revealed markedly higher levels of total fatty acids (TFAs) derived from PL in mice skeletal muscle compared to rats and elevated saturated fatty acids (SFAs) levels in mice. Unsaturated fatty acid levels, mainly monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), were substantially higher in mice muscle across all lipid classes, resulting in a higher PUFA/TFA ratio in mice muscle. Detailed analysis of specific unsaturated fatty acids (C16:1, C18:1n9c, C18:2n6c, C22:6n3) indicated elevated levels in mice relative to rats. Conversely, rats exhibited higher SFA levels derived from the NPL fraction in the liver, particularly in myristic (C14:0), stearic (C18:0), and tricosanoic (C23:0) acids. Mice liver PL fractions displayed significantly elevated unsaturated FA levels, with notably higher MUFAs and lower PUFAs in NPL fractions compared to rats. Analysis of specific unsaturated FAs revealed higher levels of palmitoleic acid (C16:1) in mice, while rats exhibited increased linoleic (C18:2n6c) and linolenic (C18:3n3) acids. In conclusion, significant differences in FAs tissue distribution between rats and mice underscore the importance of considering species-specific FAs variations when utilizing these animal models and interpreting experimental results related to FA metabolism.

Modulating Growth and Oil Profile of Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.): Paclobutrazol and Mepiquat Chloride Impacts

AbstractSesame (Sesamum indicum L.) is an important oilseed crop with significant economic importance in many developing countries. This study rigorously investigated the impact of various applications and doses of two specific plant growth regulators, paclobutrazol (PAC) and mepiquat chloride (MC), on the development, yield components, oil content, and fatty acid composition of sesame plants across two consecutive growing seasons. The research revealed that while paclobutrazol application increased the plant height it also resulted in a slight decrease in oil content. The paclobutrazol treatment resulted in the highest seed yield (21.3 g/plant), which was significantly different from both the MC (13.1 g/plant) and PAC + MC (14.6 g/plant) treatments. In contrast, the mepiquat chloride treatment resulted in the lowest oil content. The combined application of both regulators showed intermediate effects. In addition, variations in fatty acid content were observed between applications and doses, with significant differences in saturated and unsaturated fatty acid levels. The findings provide valuable insights into the potential benefits and implications of using growth regulators in sesame cultivation, especially in the context of mechanized harvesting and oil quality optimization.

1H Nuclear Magnetic Resonance, Infrared, and Chemometrics in Lipid Analysis of Brazilian Edible-Oil-Based Nutraceuticals

Edible oils have commercial and nutritional value due to the presence of essential fatty acids. They can be consumed fresh in the form of capsules known as nutraceuticals. The quality of such products is of interest to the consumer. In this context, this study describes a method based on high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier-transform mid-infrared spectroscopic analysis (FTIR), combined with statistical analyses, to differentiate different edible oils used as nutraceuticals in Brazil by fatty acid content. Through the analysis of 1H NMR spectra, the levels of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids in edible oils were characterized and quantified. Statistical analysis of the data confirmed the real distinctions between nutraceutical raw materials, with emphasis on ω-9, ω-6, and ω-3 fatty acids. The analytical approach presented also demonstrates the potential to identify the origin (animal or vegetable) of edible oils used as nutraceuticals.

Possibility of using fatty acid profiles for the authentication of beef adulterated with pork, donkey, and dog meat

Detection of meat adulteration is a critical issue in food labeling procedures and a serious concern related to food fraud, authenticity, and religious beliefs. The current work detected and quantified adulteration of raw ground beef with pork, donkey, and dog meat based on fatty acid profiles using GC-MS/MS. The study design incorporated pork, donkey, or dog meat with beef meat; negative and positive controls were used for the different meat species. Results demonstrated several significant differences (p &lt; 0.05) in fatty acid contents between mixed/adulterated meat and pure beef. In addition, higher total saturated fatty acid levels in ground beef (57.91%) compared to dog fat (46.44%), donkey (38.71%), and pork fat (lard) (40.23%). High total unsaturated fatty acids content was observed in donkey (61.92%), pork (59.77%), and dog (53.56%) fats compared to beef fat (42.09%). On the other hand, total unsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids in beef meat were lower than in pork, donkey, and dog meat. Moreover, the highest trans-fatty acid content was found in pork compared to the other meat types. All incorporated samples correlated positively with pure ground beef concerning the fatty acid profiles. Therefore, alteration of the mixed beef fatty acid profiles was a potential indicator for adulteration since a marked decrease in total saturated fatty acid content and an increase in unsaturated fatty acids was observed in the substituted samples. We concluded that GC-MS/MS-based fatty acid profiling is a promising technique that can be used to detect meat adulteration.

Improved traits of proximate composition, liver antioxidant capacity and feeding habits in diploid hybrids from female Micropterus salmoides × male Lepomis cyanellus

Distant hybridization has been widely used as an effective strategy for improving fish germplasm. The largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides, LB) is a popular fish worldwide due to its excellent performance in aquaculture, edibility, and sport fishing. However, the carnivorous nature of LB increases the cost and difficulty of culture and poses a threat to wild fishery resources. At present, there is a lack of research on improving the germplasm of LB. In this study, hybrid offspring (LG) were produced by crossing female LB and male green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus, GS). The biological characteristics of the LG, such as muscle proximate composition, liver antioxidant enzyme activity, and pharyngeal tooth structure, were analyzed to evaluate their potential for aquaculture. The proximate composition analysis revealed that LG has a higher crude protein content of 20.07% compared to LB (18.1%) and GS (18.7%) (P < 0.05), and a lower crude fat content of 0.57% than LB (1.17%) (P < 0.05). Furthermore, LG had a significantly higher essential amino acid content (7.20%) than LB (6.43%) (P < 0.05), but not significantly different from GS (6.82%) (P > 0.05). In terms of fatty acid content, LG had significantly lower levels of saturated fatty acids (0.083%) compared to LB (0.153%) and GS (0.169%) (P < 0.05). Additionally, the amount of arachidonic acid (C20:4n6, ARA) in LG (0.058%) was significantly higher than LB (0.019%) and GS (0.043%) (P < 0.05). Regarding antioxidant enzyme activities in the liver, LG exhibited significantly higher superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity than LB and GS (P < 0.05). Electron microscopic observation of the pharyngeal tooth showed that the tooth number of LG (160.67 ± 3.93) was significantly lower than that of LB (181.67 ± 4.97) (P < 0.05) and significantly higher than that of GS (108.00 ± 3.58) (P < 0.05), while the tooth diameter of LG (0.076 ± 0.023) was significantly higher than that of LB (0.057 ± 0.016) (P < 0.05) and significantly lower than that of GS (0.108 ± 0.044) (P < 0.05). In conclusion, this study found that LG exhibited improved traits in proximate composition and hepatic antioxidant enzyme activity. The pharyngeal tooth characteristics indicated that LG may have different food selection and processing capabilities. This is the first report on biological characteristics in offspring produced from a distant hybridization between LB and GS, providing new insights into the genetic improvement and germplasm innovation of LB.

Physicochemical properties and sensory acceptability of recombined butter substituted by fat rich in mono- and diacylglycerol from coconut stearin

ABSTRACT Butter is generally made from milk fat, which contains high levels of saturated fatty acids, thus providing health risks. Therefore, alternatives are needed, namely recombined butter by substituting other healthier saturated fats, namely fat rich in monoacylglycerols (MAG) and diacylglycerols (DAG) from glycerolysis of coconut stearin which is rich in medium chain fatty acids, which are then called MAG-DAG fat (MDF). This research aimed to determine the effect of MDF substitution in recombined butter, which produced the best physicochemical and sensorial properties. The substitution of MDF was carried out at concentrations 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%. Substitution of MDF had a significant effect on physicochemical properties and sensory acceptability. Recombined butter with substitution of MDF-5% produced good physicochemical properties and was liked by the panelists. Recombined butter of MDF-5% contained MAG, DAG, and triacylglycerol (TAG) of 0.48%, 8.71%, and 90.81%, respectively, and it had a higher medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs) content, namely 10.72% compared to the MDF-0% (control) which was only 7.45%. The hardness, adhesiveness, and cohesiveness of recombined butter of MDF-5% were about 1247.44 N, −671.28 N, and 0,09 N, respectively. The crystal microstructure was in the form of small spherulites in large quantities, and polymorphism showed a mixture of β’- and β-crystals. Substitution of MDF-5% did not change the new functional groups, but increased the intensity of the hydroxyl groups. Substitution of MDF in recombined butter was suitable to produce butter with good characteristics and potentially healthier.

Changes in the fatty acid profiles and health indexes of bovine colostrum during the first days of lactation and their impact on human health

Our objective was to analyze the changes in fatty acid (FA) profiles of bovine colostrum and immature milk during the first four days of lactation and assess their potential impact on human health. Colostrum and immature milk samples were collected from Czech Fleckvieh cows during their first to third lactation and the FA profiles were analyzed using multidimensional gas chromatography with a vacuum ultraviolet detector (GC×GC-VUV). The colostrum of primiparous cows contained lower levels of medium-chain and saturated fatty acids, and higher levels of mono- and unsaturated fatty acids compared to that of multiparous cows. The atherogenic and thrombogenicity indexes, as well as the hypocholesterolemic-to-hypercholesterolemic fatty acid ratio, were more favourable in primiparous cows. This makes colostrum fat an attractive product for human nutrition. To obtain the maximum health benefits, we recommend collecting and processing the colostrum of primiparous cows and immature milk at the end of the milk transition separately.

Hypertension Increases Susceptibility to Experimental Malaria in Mice.

Global prevalence of hypertension is on the rise, burdening healthcare, especially in developing countries where infectious diseases, such as malaria, are also rampant. Whether hypertension could predispose or increase susceptibility to malaria, however, has not been extensively explored. Previously, we reported that hypertension is associated with abnormal red blood cell (RBC) physiology and anemia. Since RBC are target host cells for malarial parasite, Plasmodium, we hypothesized that hypertensive patients with abnormal RBC physiology are at greater risk or susceptibility to Plasmodium infection. To test this hypothesis, normotensive (BPN/3J) and hypertensive (BPH/2J) mice were characterized for their RBC physiology and subsequently infected with Plasmodium yoelii (P. yoelii), a murine-specific non-lethal strain. When compared to BPN mice, BPH mice displayed microcytic anemia with RBC highly resistant to osmotic hemolysis. Further, BPH RBC exhibited greater membrane rigidity and an altered lipid composition, as evidenced by higher levels of phospholipids and saturated fatty acid, such as stearate (C18:0), along with lower levels of polyunsaturated fatty acid like arachidonate (C20:4). Moreover, BPH mice had significantly greater circulating Ter119+ CD71+ reticulocytes, or immature RBC, prone to P. yoelii infection. Upon infection with P. yoelii, BPH mice experienced significant body weight loss accompanied by sustained parasitemia, indices of anemia, and substantial increase in systemic pro-inflammatory mediators, compared to BPN mice, indicating that BPH mice were incompetent to clear P. yoelii infection. Collectively, these data demonstrate that aberrant RBC physiology observed in hypertensive BPH mice contributes to an increased susceptibility to P. yoelii infection and malaria-associated pathology.

Does hunted wild boar meat meet modern consumer nutritional expectations?

The present study aimed to evaluate the nutritional characteristics of hunted wild boar (WB) meat and compare them with those of meat from analogous domestic animals (pigs) reared in two different rearing systems: indoor-intensive (PI) and outdoor-extensive (PO). WB meat showed a lower amount of lipid content compared to pork and a higher antioxidant activity compared to PI and PO. The comparison of the fatty acid composition of WB and domestic pig reveals significant differences in saturated fatty acids (SFA) and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), with WB having the highest PUFA level and the lowest SFA level. The omega 6/omega 3 (n-6/n-3) PUFA ratio, PUFA/SFA, atherogenic and thrombogenic indices (AI and TI), as well as the hypocholesterolemic/ hypercholesterolemic index (h/H), were calculated. The n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio was higher in pork independently of the rearing system. The PUFA/SFA ratio of WB meat was above the minimum ratio of 0.40 recommended to contribute to a reduction in the risk of coronary diseases in pork from both rearing systems. AI and TI were lower in WB meat compared to commercially reared pigs, while h/H was higher in WB in comparison with pork meat. WB meat shows good nutritional quality; therefore, the use of game meat as a food source could be appropriate and could benefit contemporary consumers looking for "green" and high-nutritional products.

Lipid Yields and Fatty Acid Composition if Indigenous Microalgae, Isolated from the Beira, and Diyawanna Urban Lakes, for Sustainable Biofuel Production in Sri Lanka

&#x0D; Biofuels are carbon-neutral combustibles produced from renewable biomass. Third generation biofuels, derived from microalgal biomass, are distinctly superior to their preceding generations, due to higher productivity and resource use efficiency of microalgae compared to conventional energy crops. It is a viable source of sustainable energy for our country due to the availability of water, ambient temperatures and year-round sunlight needed for microalgae cultivation, and most importantly, the abundance of diverse microalgae species. However, these native microalgae are relatively unexplored for their productivities and thereby, greatly underutilized. This research was aimed to investigate the lipid yields and fatty acid compositions of local freshwater microalgae, and to identify their potential for biodiesel production. This was carried out by (1) microalgae isolation and morphological identification (2) microalgae cultivation (3) biomass harvesting, lipid extraction, gravimetric measurement of extracted lipids and (4) acid-catalysed transesterification, followed by GCMS analysis of the biodiesel product. Chlorella sp., Chlorococcum sp. and Chlamydomonas sp. were isolated from Beira/ Diyawanna Lakes using streak plate technique in solid standard BBM media. They were next cultivated under axenic conditions in liquid standard BBM media under 16: 8 (light: dark), at 25°C for 20 days in duplicates. The biomass was then harvested using alum, dried to reach a constant weight and the Bligh and Dyer lipid extraction was done in triplicate. The extracted lipids were trans-esterified with methanol, using sulfuric acid catalyst at 90° C for 60 minutes. The separated product was analysed by GCMS. Chlorella sp., Chlorococcum sp. and Chlamydomonas sp. cultivated under standard conditions gave average lipid yields of 11.34±1.01%, 15.00±1.40% and 2.10±0.50% respectively. Average lipid yield of Chlamydomonas sp. was significantly lower than the other two species at 95% confidence level (Two-sample T test on SPSS Version 21). GCMS analysis of the biodiesel product from Chlorella sp. indicated significant levels of saturated fatty acids including palmitic and stearic acids, monounsaturated fatty acids like cis-11- eicosenoic acid and polyunsaturated fatty acids including linoleic and linolenic acids. The fatty acid ratios were used to calculate the saturation value, cetane number, density, iodine value and pour point of the produced biodiesel. These quality parameters were in accordance with the ASTM D6751- 20a standards. Therefore, with a substantial yield and fatty acid composition of intracellular lipids, this local species of Chlorella can be a prospective candidate for sustainable bioenergy production in Sri Lanka.&#x0D; &#x0D; Keywords: Chlorella, Chlorococcum, Chlamydomonas, Microalgal lipids, Biodiesel

The causal impact of saturated fatty acids on rheumatoid arthritis: a bidirectional Mendelian randomisation study.

The causal relationship between saturated fatty acids (SFAs) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) remains poorly understood. This study aimed to determine whether SFAs are causally related to RA using Mendelian randomisation (MR) analyses. Genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary data for RA (ukb-d-M13_RHEUMA) and SFAs (met-d-SFA) were obtained from the Integrative Epidemiology Unit OpenGWAS database. A bidirectional MR analysis was performed using a suite of algorithms, namely the MR-Egger, weighted median, simple mode, weighted mode, and inverse-variance weighted (IVW) algorithms, all integrated using the "MR" function. The robustness of the MR findings was further evaluated through sensitivity analyses, including heterogeneity, horizontal pleiotropy, and leave-one-out tests. The IVW algorithm in the forward MR analysis indicated a causal link between SFAs and RA (p = 0.025), identifying SFAs as a risk factor for RA (odds ratio = 1.001). Sensitivity analyses indicated no significant heterogeneity, horizontal pleiotropy, or severe bias, reinforcing the credibility of the forward MR results. However, the reverse MR analysis revealed that RA does not causally affect SFA levels (p = 0.195), and this finding was supported by corresponding sensitivity analyses. The findings of this study substantiate the positive causal effect of SFAs on the incidence of RA through bidirectional MR analysis, thereby offering a consequential direction for future research on the diagnosis and treatment of RA.

Different Lengths of Diet Supplementation with 10% Flaxseed Alter the Hormonal Profile and the Follicular Fluid Fatty Acid Content of Fattening Gilts.

The effect of 10% dietary flaxseed fed for 3 and 6 weeks on serum hormone levels of fattening gilts, the fatty acid (FA) follicular fluid (FF) composition of small and large antral follicles, and the steroidogenesis and IGF-I secretion by isolated small antral follicles and their response to regulatory hormones (LH, FSH, IGF-I) was studied using immunoassay and gas chromatography analyses. Both supplemental periods increased levels of P4 and IGF-I in blood serum. A shorter period inhibited steroidogenesis (P4, T, E2) and IGF-I secretion by small antral follicles, which was associated with decreased levels of monounsaturated FAs (MUFA) and preferred n-6 polyunsaturated FA (PUFA) metabolism. A longer period stimulated hormone secretion at elevated levels of saturated FAs (SFA) at the expense of MUFAs and PUFAs preferring the n-3 PUFA metabolism. Out of ovarian regulators, only LH and IGF-I were able to alter the secretion of steroids and IGF-I by small follicles of fattening pigs fed a basal diet. The effect of flaxseed on the secretion of follicular hormones after both supplemental periods was altered by all regulatory hormones in a dose-dependent manner. The level of SFAs and PUFAs in FF of large follicles increased with the length of flaxseed feeding, suggesting the suppression of ovulation.
