Political participation among deaf youth in Great Britain.

Variations in political participation are linked to demographic factors, socioeconomic disparities, and cultural-ethnic diversity. Existing research has primarily explored reduced political involvement among individuals with disabilities, particularly in electoral politics. However, little research has attended the involvement of deaf people specifically. This is of interest because deaf youth are at an intersection of disability, language and cultural identity with their language affiliations and rejection or acceptance of disability evolving through childhood. This study draws from original data collected via an online survey, comprising 163 deaf young respondents aged 16-19 in Great Britain. We compare their levels of political participation with those of general population peers to explore how sociodemographic factors, alongside variations in self-identification as deaf, and meaningful interactions with other deaf people contribute to explain their political engagement. The results challenge conventional wisdom by demonstrating that deaf youth participate more actively in politics than their hearing peers in various forms of political involvement, including collective, contact, and institutional activism. We also recognize differences among deaf youth and propose that social aspects of identity formation, particularly embracing a deaf identity and having deaf friends, can boost certain forms of political engagement. In summary, this study underscores the importance of acknowledging the diversity of deaf youth in terms of affiliation with various forms of deaf identity, rendering their experience different from both disabled and hearing youth. By identifying the factors driving heightened political participation, policymakers and advocates can develop strategies to enhance political engagement among all young people, regardless of their hearing status.

Angry Men and Civic Women? Gendered Effects of Conflict on Political Participation in Kosovo

This article studies the effect of the 1998–99 Kosovo war on current political participation, disaggregating the analysis by the type of conflict experience – namely death or injury to self or a family member or displacement – and by gender. The results show that experience of conflict is associated with more political participation but with important distinctions between genders by the form of participation and the type of conflict experience. Displacement is associated with more voting among women, but not among men, and with more demonstrating by men but weaker or no effects for women; death and injury are associated with higher political party membership for men but not women. While experiences of conflict increase levels of political participation, the form that this takes varies by gender, with effects on private, civic, action among women, and effects on direct, public, and more emotionally heightened engagement among men. HIGHLIGHTS The view that conflict victims are more politically active than non-victims needs nuancing. In Kosovo, women’s war displacement is only associated with an increase in voting. But men will join a political party (if injury or death in the family) or demonstrate (if displaced). This implies that victimization does not contribute to challenging gendered social norms. The accepted “post-traumatic growth” hypothesis is insufficient to explain these findings.

Perceived discrimination, political efficacy, and political participation in American Indian adults

IntroductionPsychological factors linked to political participation are largely understudied in American Indians. Prior work notes relatively low levels of participation compared to other racial and ethnic groups and suggests that identification with being American Indian is linked to overall levels of civic engagement in part through perceptions of group discrimination.MethodsIn the current work, in a sample of 727 American Indian adults, we created two groups: Group 1 (N = 398) reported perceived discrimination related to race, and Group 2 (N = 329) reported perceived discrimination not related to race or ethnicity. We investigated the relationships between individual experiences of everyday discrimination related to race, levels of political efficacy, and political participation (Group 1), and individual experiences of everyday discrimination not related to race or ethnicity, political efficacy, and political participation (Group 2).ResultsWe found that greater experiences of everyday discrimination related to race was associated with higher levels of political participation through increased levels of internal and collective efficacy. In contrast, greater experiences of everyday discrimination related to race was associated with higher levels of political participation through lower external political efficacy. For Group 2, we found that greater experiences of everyday discrimination not related to race or ethnicity was not directly associated with political participation, but mediation analyses revealed a relationship with lower levels of political participation through decreased internal and collective efficacy. The indirect effect through external political efficacy was not significant.DiscussionGiven low levels of American Indian political participation, political efficacy could be a target for interventions aiming to increase participation in the political system.

Political Polarization in Thailand: Urban vs. Rural Dynamics

This study aims to achieve two research objectives: (1) to examine the disparities in democratic attitudes and political participation between urban and rural areas in Thailand, and (2) to formulate policy recommendations aimed at mitigating political polarization between urban and rural areas in the country. It utilized a survey methodology, drawing data from the 7th World Values Survey, with a representative sample of Thai citizens from both urban and rural regions. The study analyzed four independent variables—place of residence, gender, socioeconomic status, and education level—alongside two categories of dependent variables, namely democratic attitudes and political participation. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS, encompassing a range of descriptive statistics as well as hierarchical linear and logistic regression analyses. The findings indicate that rural residents in Thailand tend to exhibit stronger democratic values than their urban counterparts. However, they also display lower levels of political participation. To enhance democracy in Thailand, it is imperative to create an environment conducive to political engagement, particularly in rural communities that often feel marginalized and resentful due to policies that appear to favor urban elites. Addressing this divide is crucial for the stability and development of Thailand’s democratic system.

Analysis of the Level of Political Participation of the Kenduri Cinta Community in Jakarta

This research was conducted to determine the level of political participation of the Kenduri Cinta community as an urban Sufism community in DKI Jakarta. The method used in this research is a quantitative method by distributing questionnaires to the Kenduri Cinta community who were selected by purposive sampling. The independent variables used in this research are political concern; political motivation; political situation and environment; political education; and political orientation. This study explains how these independent variables affect the political participation of the Kenduri Cinta community. The 503 questionnaires obtained were processed by the SPSS application version 25. The Principal Component Analysis method was used in multiple linear regression to analyse how independent variables affect their political participation. The F test result shows that all independent variables simultaneously affect the level of political participation of the Kenduri Cinta community. Meanwhile, the t test result shows that four independent variables are significant and three of them have positive regression coefficients. Interestingly, political motivation has a negative regression coefficient even though it is significant. This means the higher their political motivation, the lower their political participation.

This study discusses the Political Participation of Veiled Students of the Padangsidimpuan State Islamic Institute in the 2019 Presidential Election in the City of Padangsidimpuan. The type of research is field research (field research) with a field approach. The date source consisted of primary, nmaelyveiled studets at IAIN Padangsidimpuan and secondary books, journal article, documentation, relevant to this study. Date collection techniques are obsevation, interviws, and analysis techniques are descriptive analysis.. This secondary data consists of literature which is reading material, the work of experts from their respective fields whose function is to explain primary legal materials. After obtaining complete data, it is then analyzed to get more relevant results. The results of the study stated that the Political Participation of Veiled Padangsidimpuan State Islamic Institute Students in the 2019 Presidential Election in Padangsidimpuan City was still very minimal as can be seen from the level of participation of Padangsidimpuan State Islamic Institute students who wore veils in the presidential election in Padangsidimpuan city where there were 32% who voted. and did not vote 68%. The results of the study show that the factors that affect the low level of political participation of female students are first, educational background, second, environment, and third, the many political actors who deviate. The consequences are first, the bad democratic system and second, the decline in the level of public trust in the government.

Civic Value and Political Interest as Determinants of Political Participation Among Primary School Teachers in Oyo State

The purpose of this study was to examine civic value and political interest as determinants of political participation among primary school teachers in Oyo state. Five hundred participants constituted the study’s sample out of which only 476 were used after data administration. Both the independent and dependent variables were measured with validated instruments with 0.91 reliability co-efficient and the data obtained was analyzed using Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) Statistical method. Two research hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. The result showed that there was significant relationship between civic value and political participation among primary school teachers (r= .813; p<0.05) as well as between political interest and political participation among primary school teachers (r= .701; p<0.05). The implication of this showed that civic value and political interest had significant impacts on political participation among primary school teachers. In view of these findings, it was recommended that educational stakeholders should intensify their effort to institute a culture of civic value in the institution so as to improve on the level of political participation among primary school teachers.

Citizen political participation in Kenya: a cross-sectional analysis

ABSTRACTCitizen participation in politics continues to be an issue of concern for the Kenyan democracy, which needs to be understood to be addressed. Much of the existing literature on this topic focuses on demographic factors, with no sufficient scholarship interrogating political culture and its influence on citizen political participation. In this thesis, I employ an empirical analysis of the determinants of political participation among Kenyans using primary data I collected through an online survey. My main argument is that political culture matters in determining the patterns of political participation among Kenyans. Results from probit regression analyses illustrate that political culture significantly predicts the levels of political participation among Kenyans, across age cohorts. These findings bring up the discussion on the current rate of citizen participation in politics in Kenya, especially in a world in which democracy is increasingly under threat, and promotes case study analyses, and understanding of participatory democracy.

Does Gender Based Representation Matters in Fostering Political Inclusion of Women in Local Governments? A Case of India

How does the legally established gender quota in local self-government bodies affect the level of representation of women in power? How does the representation of women in power increase effective political participation? Previous studies were devoted to studying the consequences of gender quotas in the authorities and management, but the issue of the model of gender political participation remained neglected. The introduction of gender quotas as a mechanism for ensuring equal rights and opportunities for women in politics and the decision-making process increases women’s political participation and political leadership. The success or failure of planning and decision-making largely depends on the level of political participation. The issues of this work correspond to Goal 5 of Sustainable Development, which provides equal opportunities for women’s leadership at all levels of decision-making in political, economic and public life. The paper analyzes the representation of women in the authorities and management in different regions of the world. The study’s main goal is to determine the relationship between the representation of women in rural local self-government bodies and the consequences of this representation. The data sources were the results of local elections, reports of government ministries and agencies, United Nations reports on gender equality and the empowerment of women, as well as surveys of women representatives of political power in three Indian states (Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra ) — state election data analyzed over the past three decades. The results of this study show that the level of female representation increases annually, although this is not entirely related to political participation. Women’s electoral participation indicates that despite growing women’s participation in local elections, the expression remains unchanged within the established gender quota of 33 to 50 percent. Addressing the gender imbalance in the political environment of three states in India is a result of the introduction and enforcement of gender quotas in politics. The results of this study have practical value for local self-government bodies when developing state gender policy.

How Does Political Engagement by Classes of People Affect the Policies Made by Politicians?

This research revolves around the impact of political activity on policymakers' decisions. First, this work discusses some well-known methods of restricting political participation for certain categories of people, such as vote suppression in various forms. Then, the work shows how several additional factors influence political engagement and how such changes affect policies such as tax rates. Later, the work presents model that would allow testing the hypothesis that politicians' behavior is intimately tied to their interests, assuming that they respond to varying levels of political participation each time. Lastly, the work provides theoretical analyses using economic principals to reach reasonable and logical conclusions.

Not Bowling Alone: Revisiting Partisan Types and Participatory Behaviors Using the Communication Mediated Model

Drawing on the two-wave 2020 American National Election Studies (ANES) survey, this study revisits partisan types by categorizing individuals’ party identification and positions on party-divided issues. A Latent Class Analysis reveals six types of partisans, which were further clustered into three types: polarized partisans (i.e., polarized Democrats and polarized Republicans, 47.85%), incongruent partisans (i.e., conservative Democrats and liberal Republicans, 28.23%), and floating citizens (i.e., hesitant citizens and apathetic citizens, 23.92%) based on the partisan typology proposed in this study. Employing the O-S-R-O-R model, this study found that polarized partisans (O), who are the most politically active citizens, are more likely than incongruent partisans and floating citizens to seek pro-attitudinal news on multi-platforms (S), then to discuss politics (R), then to be politically knowledgeable (O), which finally leads to higher levels of political participation. The results highlight a worrisome tendency in US politics as participation is largely by biased polarized partisans. Nevertheless, incongruent partisans also have the potential to make contributions to both deliberative and participatory democracy because they are also politically active. Their discussion and participatory behaviors can be attributed to their mixed issue positions and counter-attitudinal news consumption on multi-platforms.

Perempuan Muda dan Partai Politik : Dari Descriptive Participation menuju Substantive Representation

The low level of political participation among women in general, including young women, in Indonesia can be explained through three reasons. Firstly, women face a challenging playing field because politics is predominantly characterized by a masculine culture. Secondly, in their pursuit of political engagement, women encounter several obstacles, such as patriarchal structures, sexist and ageist views, and social class barriers. Thirdly, young women are also hindered by political nepotism, lack of party support, limited political knowledge, and financial constraints. This paper utilizes the conceptual framework of Women and Political Party by Lovenduski (1997), Squires (2007), Ann Phillips’ theory of women’s representation, as well as the works of Young, Mouffe, Childs, and Krook to examine the dynamics of young women and political parties in Indonesia from the 2019 elections to the upcoming 2024 elections. The focus is on the interconnection between descriptive participation and substantive representation. The research methodology employed involves a critical analysis of existing literature supplemented by interviews conducted with young women actively involved in five political parties qualified as participants in the 2024 elections (Golkar, NasDem, PKB, Demokrat, and PSI), including both ordinary party members and those who were elected as members of the DPR (People’s Representative Council of Indonesia) in the 2019 elections.

RURAL WOMEN’S POLITICAL PARTICIPATION IN CHINA： AN ANALYSIS OF THE METHODS OF RURAL GOVERNANCE MODERNIZATION

With the development of China’s industrialization and urbanization, many young and middle-aged men in rural China have moved to urban areas to work. The elderly, women and children are the main permanent residents in rural China, and women account for more than half of the agricultural labour force. However, Chinese rural women are obviously in a weak and marginal position in rural political participation, which is not equal to their contribution to rural development. In 2019, China announced plans to modernize rural governance. The core is to adapt to the change of time, reform the rural governance system that does not meet the requirements of practice and development, improve the new rural governance system that combines autonomy, rule of law, and rule of virtue under the leadership of party organizations, make the rural systems more scientific and perfect, and realize the institutional, standardized, and procedural governance of rural social affairs. Rural governance is the basis of national governance. Without the modernization of rural governance, there will be no modernization of national governance, and there will be no modernization of the country. At present, China is in the stage of building socialist modernization in an all-round way, and the modernization of rural governance has been put on the agenda. Therefore, this paper assumes that the modernization of rural governance in China provides a good opportunity to improve the political participation of Chinese rural women. It aims to explore effective approaches to enhancing the level of political participation among rural women and promoting the process of rural democratization in China within the context of rural governance modernization. It achieves this by examining the primary issues surrounding the current political participation of rural women in China and analyzing the main factors contributing to these issues.

MODAL SOSIAL MASYARAKAT KECAMATAN BUNGURAN SELATAN DALAM PARTISIPASI POLITIK

This study aims to find out what capital the people of South Bunguran District have in political participation. The method used in this study is a qualitative approach with a discrete type of research. The results of the study show that the high level of community participation in politics in Bunguran Selatan District cannot be separated from three important aspects which are the social capital of the people in the District, such as the network aspect. Trust and norms, the mass media is one of the social assets of society in participating in politics. With the mass media, people are able to get to know the candidates who will fight in the democratic party. The existence of the mass media plays an important role in increasing public participation in politics. Aspects of trust is also one of the important aspects in politics. Public trust in political candidates greatly influences people's participation in politics. Social norms are benchmarks in participating to assess couples who will be a five-year extension of society who will air their grievances. Factors such as personality are still the main capital of candidates in attracting public participation. Even though there are three aspects of social capital in society in politics, the practice of money politics still haunts the people in the sub-district in making choices in politics.

Motivated to vote? The effect of flooding on political participation.

This paper investigates changes in political participation following a disaster. Drawing on the electoral results and flood declarations after the 2010 flood in Slovakia, a dataset was constructed that illustrates when and how often each municipality was affected by disastrous conditions before the elections. The analysis revealed that experiencing a flood significantly increased the level of political participation in a municipality. However, the effect of flooding on elections is conditional. First, significantly higher turnout occurs only when a flood affects the municipality on election day. Second, repeated flooding before the elections does not change the overall participation rate. In contrast, it is the one-time, continuous extreme weather event that most mobilises voters. Third, only severely affected municipalities demonstrated a significant turnout effect. Lastly, the timing variable is crucial in determining the impact of repetition and severity. This paper distinguishes between different kinds of flood events that can influence disaster behaviour.

The Impact of Governmental Actions and Inactions on the Level of Political Participation on the Ghanaian Youth and how it affects Sustainable Development: A Focus on Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology

It is imperative for the youth in every democratic country to be involved in the politics related activities as this can have a great impact on the attainment of sustainable development goals like quality education, good health and well-being, decent work and economic growth, peace, justice and strong institutions. The youth mostly constitute majority of the population, due to this, their active involvement is very important. However, there are certain challenges that prevent the youth from participating effectively. Focusing on Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, the study examines the impact of governmental actions and inactions on the political participation of the Ghanaian youth and how it affects sustainable development. It also examines some challenges that prevent them from participating effectively. A mixed-method approach was employed to collect and analyze data. The study confirms that most of the actions and inactions of government has had a negative impact on the level of political participation of Ghanaians. It also argues that there have been other factors that limit this political participation. It was also noted that sustainable development can be affected positively or negatively by the level of political participation of the youth and then further provides recommendations.

KPU Strategy South Tangerang City in Increasing Voter Participation During Pandemic Times at The Election in 2020

Voter participation in an election is often a measure of election success. The higher the level of participation, the higher the public's trust in the election process and the stronger the legitimacy of the elected leader. The City of South Tangerang, which has participated in the regional elections three times until the last election in 2020, has had an interesting experience regarding voter participation. In the previous regional elections, namely in 2010 and 2015, voter participation was never more than 60%. In the 2010 elections, voter participation only reached 56.9%, and in the 2015 elections even decreased to only 56.8%. This number is very far from the average target for regional election participation. In 2020 elections were held during a pandemic, and there was concern that voter participation would decline further. In fact, voter participation rose to 60.48%. From the initial survey, it was found that the KPU of South Tangerang City before the election was worried that participation would decline, so they developed a strategy to increase voter participation. This study aims to determine the strategy for increasing voter participation carried out by the KPU of South Tangerang City in the 2020 elections and to find out the challenges, obstacles, and supporting strengths. The theory used in this study is the theory of voter participation from Hungtinfton, Verba, and Kaats, as well as findings in journals related to strategies for increasing participation. The research method uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Data collection techniques through interviews and documentation. Data analysis: qualitative based on Miles and Huberman. Test the Validity of the Data using Triangulation. The result research showed that the KPU of South Tangerang City, in an effort to increase the level of political participation, used a strategy with the P Process model by starting to use vision and mission analysis, identifying problems, formulating strategies by making activities plans, implementing strategies through socialization with five types of activities: competitions, virtual meetings, print journalism, social media and distribution of visual aids for socialization purposes. All implementations are monitored and evaluated both in the middle and at the end of the activities.

Propaganda, Social Media, and Political Participation: Quantitative Analysis of The Influence of Propaganda #2019gantipresiden on Outcomes and Levels of Political Participation of National Voters in The 2019 Presidential Elections

In politics, propaganda is often used, for example, during general elections. Among the propaganda media that can be used is social media such as Twitter. During the 2019 Indonesian presidential election, one of the supporters of the presidential candidate pair carried out propaganda, namely the #2019gantipresiden tweet. From a propaganda perspective, this hashtag can be categorized as the bandwagon type of propaganda (Shabo, 2008), a technique that asks audiences to follow propagandist ideas. This study aims to determine the influence of #2019gantipresiden tweets on the results and participation rates in the 2019 Presidential Election. The data used in this study are tweets with the hashtag #2019gantipresiden spread across 34 provinces in Indonesia. Data was collected over three months, namely May, June, and July 2018, when this hashtag was first launched. In addition, data from the results of the 2019 Presidential Election were obtained from the KPU. The data analysis results show a significant relationship between the number of #2019gantipresiden tweets and the Jokowi-Ma'ruf vote. However, this relationship becomes insignificant when including Prabowo-Sandi's vote acquisition as a control variable and has the opportunity to reduce the vote gain obtained by the Jokowi-Ma'ruf pair. This result is inversely proportional to the relationship between the number of #2019gantipresiden tweets and Prabowo-Sandi's vote gain, where the relationship between the two remains significant whether controlled by Jokowo-Ma'ruf vote gain or not. The appearance of the #2019gantipresiden tweet also triggered public participation in the 2019 presidential election by giving it an influence of 31.4%.

The contribution of the smartphone use to reducing depressive symptoms of Chinese older adults: The mediating effect of social participation.

Depression is a prevalent mental health disorder. Although Internet use has been associated with depression, there is limited data on the association between smartphone use and depressive symptoms. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between smartphone use and depressive symptoms among older individuals in China. 5,244 Chinese older individuals over the age of 60 were selected as the sample from the China Longitudinal Aging Social Survey (CLASS) 2018 dataset. The dependent variable "depression symptoms" was measured using the 9-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies-Depression (CES-D) scale. The study employed multiple linear regression to investigate the relationship between smartphone use (independent variable) and depressive symptoms in older people. Thorough analyses of robustness, sensitivity, and heterogeneity were conducted to ensure the robustness and sensitivity of the findings. Additionally, mediating effect analysis was performed to elucidate the mechanism through which the dependent and independent variables were related. Empirical study indicated that smartphone use had a negative impact on depressive symptoms among older adults, specifically leading to a reduction in such symptoms. The above-mentioned result was verified through endogenous and robustness tests. The heterogeneity analysis revealed that older individuals aged 70 years and above, male, and residing in urban areas exhibited a stronger association between smartphone use and depressive symptoms. Furthermore, the mediating effect model indicated that political participation, voluntary participation, and active leisure participation mediated the relationship between smartphone use and lower levels of depression symptoms among the older adults. However, passive leisure participation had a suppressing effect on the relationship between smartphone use and reduced depressive symptoms among the older adults. The causal relationship between variables required further investigation with a longitudinal design. These findings suggested that smartphone use may be considered an intervention to reduce depression symptoms among older people by increasing levels of political participation, voluntary participation, and active leisure participation.

Partisipasi Politik Masyarakat dalam Proses Pembentukan Peraturan Desa di Desa Beran Kecamatan Kepil Kabupaten Wonosobo Tahun 2021

This study aims to describe community political participation, as well as identify what factors influence the level of community political participation in the process of forming village regulations in Beran Village in 2021. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method. Data collection techniques were taken through in-depth interviews with relevant informants, field observations, and literature studies. It is intended that the data obtained is more relevant and facilitates the grouping of data. The results of the study show that the political participation of the people of Beran Village in the process of forming the 2021 village regulations is still relatively low, seen from the level of attendance and aspirations of the community during village meetings and village meetings. factors that affect the level of political participation of the people, namely internal factors (age, education level, type of work, and income), and external factors (government leadership and outreach).
