EFL Students' Perspectives toward Project-Based Learning in Vocational High Schools

In the world of education, there are many methods that can be used in the learning process. In the 21st century, the project based learning method is often used because it is in accordance with the current curriculum. This research aims to describe EFL students' perspectives toward project-based learning in vocational high school. Researchers used a mixed method by collecting data using a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews. The subjects of this research were 59 students of SMK PGRI 3 Malang from the animation and design, communication and visual department. The research results revealed that more than 71% of students gave positive responses to this method which was considered effective for increasing understanding, activeness, motivation and speaking ability in vocational high school English classes. Students feel they can increase understanding by discussing with friends when working on projects. Apart from that, during discussions students feel more active in exchanging knowledge with each other in the group. Students also feel that project-based learning makes work easier and more fun because they are done together. In addition, students feel that their speaking skills have improved after making several presentations, and they are more confident in speaking in front of the class. Therefore, project-based learning is considered to be an appropriate method for learning English in vocational high schools. This research is expected to provide new knowledge for readers regarding EFL students' perspectives toward project-based learning in vocational high school. This is so that the implementation of project-based learning in the future can be more optimal than before.

The Effects of Learning Design on Learning Activities Based on Higher Order Thinking Skills in Vocational High Schools

Abstract The twenty-first century requires Vocational High School (VHS) graduates to have high-order thinking skills (HOTS). Although HOTS-based learning in VHS has been implemented in Indonesia, the graduates are less creative in complex work. Also, teachers have insufficient knowledge about this learning design. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between learning implementation and planning, specifically focusing on the knowledge of teachers in planning lessons. To measure this knowledge, several aspects were established based on the concept of Anderson and Krathwohl’s Taxonomy 2001. The concept was used to measure knowledge, which was categorized into the factual, conceptual, procedural, and meta-cognitive dimensions. To analyze each dimension, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication were employed as key elements. A quantitative approach with a survey design and a random sample of productive subject teachers was used. Cross-sectional analysis and F-test were applied to the primary data using multiple linear regression. According to the F-test results, planning aspects simultaneously affect the implementation of HOTS-based learning in VHS. This is because the calculated F-value was greater than the table F-value. HOTS-based learning activities can be easily achieved in case the lesson plan has the same basis.

Development of Integrated Welding Jobsheet Production Based Learning in Vocational High School

This study aims to analyze the use of integrated welding jobsheets that are usually done at SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Ajibarang. After analyzing and then developing the use of an integrated welding jobsheet commonly used at SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Ajibarang, it becomes an integrated jobsheet that is combined with existing work orders in the industry. The use of the jobsheet was developed to increase the knowledge and competence of students in the Machining Engineering skill competency. This research is research and development (R&D). Stages of research using the design Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation. This research was conducted at SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Ajibarang. The subjects in this study were grade 12 students of Machining Engineering Skills at SMK Muhammadiyah 2 Ajibarang. This study uses a quasi-experimental nonequivalent control group design research method. Collecting data using a questionnaire, pretest, posttest. This study uses expert validators to validate the integrated jobsheet that will be developed, where the average validation result of the three expert validators is 4.25 or 80.5% which can be declared valid. Analysis of research data was done by using the validity of the questionnaire and T-test. To compare the achievement results in the class before being given practical treatment using an integrated worksheet and after being given treatment. We can test this comparison by means of different power testing carried out by pretest and posttest. The result of this research is that the use of integrated welding jobsheet can increase students' knowledge and competence. This study shows an increase in knowledge and competence, after being treated three times by using the use of an integrated worksheet that has been combined with a work order with (Tcount = 11.224 and Sig. = 0.000). The results presented in the form of data analysis are the results of research that has gone through several stages. Integrated jobsheet development research is able to increase students' knowledge and competence of Machining Engineering skills. The Integrated Jobsheet is declared valid to assist the learning process of welding practice in production-based learning in order to increase knowledge and competence.

The Impact of Covid 19 Pandemic on Online Learning in Sport, Health and Physical Education in Vocational High School 1 Kaligondang Purbalingga

The spread of Covid-19 has an impact on the education sector in Indonesia. It causes learning to change from conventional to online learning. The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of Covid-19 pandemic on online learning in Vocational High School 1 Purbalingga students. The research subjects were 90 students divided into several classes. This type of research is quantitative descriptive using survey methods. The results showed that online learning was not effective enough (55%), the most perceived obstacle was the quickly depleted internet quota package (43%) and the most suggestions put forward by the subject were online learning not only assignments and facilities provided by students. It can be concluded that the impact of the covid-19 pandemic that is occurring thoroughly in the world, especially in Indonesia, greatly affects the educational process, especially in the field of sports because it cannot be directly practiced and be observed together as students’ activities

Simulation-based interactive multimedia to improve vocational students' learning outcomes

Learning media supporting practical learning in vocational high school (VHS) is urgent during the COVID-19 pandemic. All VHS competencies, including land surveying techniques, cannot support students with the existing online learning facilities. This study explained the development and impact of using multimedia simulation on the learning outcomes of VHS students. The Alessi and Trollip development model with planning, design, and development phases were used to create the multimedia simulation. The participants in this research included teachers, students, material experts, and media experts. The pre-test and post-test of practical learning outcomes, as well as questionnaires, are selected to collect research data. The results based on the experts’ and teachers’ validation, and students’ assessment indicated that the multimedia simulation was 'feasible' to be used in practical learning. Based on students’ post-test results, the average score in the experimental class increased more than the average score in the control class. These findings suggested that learning land surveying techniques using multimedia simulation is more effective than classes without using multimedia simulation. Teachers and educational researchers might use this study as an example for creating learning materials to raise the standard of instruction in VHSs.

The Effectiveness of the PONTA Learning Model Based on Blended Learning in Vocational High School

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the blended learning-based PONTA learning model in vocational high schools. The model developed consists of 5 stages, namely: preparation, observation, negotiation, transfer, and apply. The trial design was carried out using a pretest-posttest group design. The test was carried out on class XII students of SMK Negeri 3 Makassar and SMK 10 Makassar. Data analysis used (1) gain score index data analysis; (2) normality analysis; (3) homogeneity analysis. The results showed that the results of testing the effectiveness of the blended learning-based PONTA learning model at SMK 3 Makassar obtained an n-gain value of 0.40 in the medium category with 81.92% learning completeness in the high category. While at SMK 10 Makassar, the n-gain value was 0.42 in the medium category with 83.24% learning completeness in the high category. Based on the research results, blended learning-based PONTA learning model in vocational high schools is effective and feasible to use to increase knowledge of occupational safety and health in the environment.

The Development of Electricity Board Learning Media with Running Light System Starter for Learning in Vocational High School

The students of grade XI of the Motorcycle Business Engineering of Vocational High School, who have learned productive subject matter in Motorcycle Engineering and Business, often experience difficulties when directly confronted with motorcycle practice media because the components are closed and hidden by the motorcycle's body cover. Therefore, a learning media which is easy to be learned by the students is essential. It means that all components can be observed clearly, and the material can be understood easily, both in theory and electrical practicum of the motorcycle starter system; the students will better understand the theory and assemble the motorcycle starter system circuit. The learning media for the motorcycle starter system is an electrical board with LEDs that can light up continuously or alternately, so it simulate the workings of the motorcycle starter system. In addition, the running LED simulation makes it easier for students to assemble a starter system. It also makes it easy and fast for students to identify, understand how it works, assemble a motorcycle starter system, and later, when facing practical materials in the form of motorbikes, students will be quicker to apply the material that they acquired from the learning media, so that, in practicum, students will work faster and minimize damage to motorcycles.

Using Blended Learning to Develop Vocational High School English Writing Material

The objective of this study is using blended learning to develop vocational high school English writing material. It tries to develop writing material based on blended learning in vocational high school. This study is research and development (R&D) adapted by Sugiyono’s model. There are nine stages applied in the study. They are (1) need survey, (2) design product, (3) design validation, (4) design revision, (5) try out 1, (6) product revision, (7) try out 2, (8) final product revision, (9) production. The try out place at tenth grade of SMK Negeri 1Lamongan. The data gained through interviews, questionnaires and observations checklist. The interviews are for students need and teachers need. Questionnaires are to do the concept analysis, to submit the experts’ appraisal and to get the student’s responses. Furthermore, the observation checklist is used to conduct developing testing. The result of the study is (1) all of students enthusiastic in blended learning method for writing English learning. The third conclusion, the students of SMK Negeri 1 Lamongan gave positive response to all the activities in “Writing Blended Learning” book. They were appreciating and feeling helpful during in writing English class. The last conclusion is using the Writing Blended Learning handbook can help students improve their English writing skills and made the students more excited when learning English writing. Finally, the product of the study is the handbook entitled “Writing Blended Learning” which comprises 9 materials divided into two semesters

The Use Mobile Learning Game on Students' Self-Regulated Learning in Vocational High School

Facilitating self-regulated learning for students has become a concern in the current covid pandemic. The digital platform is a learning solution that educational institutions currently use. This paper focuses on using mobile-based games for students' self-regulated learning. The application has been tested on media experts, materials, and media trials for students. An effectiveness test was carried out to determine the effect of games on students' self-regulated abilities. The findings showed that mobile-based games positively affected students' self-regulated learning. The analysis found a significant difference between the students' pretest and posttest scores. This finding also shows that mobile games can improve students' self-regulated learning. Keywords: Mobile learning game, Self-regulated learning, Vocational high school.

The selection of majors for prospective vocational students is the first step in determining the next career. The determination of the major aims so that students can be directed in receiving lessons based on the ability and talent of students and of course when they have graduated have the skills to get a job if they do not continue their studies. Siti Banun Sigambal Private Vocational School is located in Labuhanbatu Rantau Prapat. In realizing one of the missions of SMK, namely Realizing quality learning in Vocational High School, SMK Siti Banun in determining the Department by conducting tests. In classifying data mining techniques can be used, among others Decision Tree, K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) and Support Vector Machine (SVM). This research was conducted to compare the performance of Decision Tree, KNN and SVM algorithms in determining majors. Of the 245-test data used obtained SVM has an accuracy value of 89%, precision 87% while KNN has an accuracy value of 84%, precision 81% and Decision Tree has an accuracy value of 78% and precision of 75%.

A USING EDMODO AS SCAFFOLDING TECHNIQUE IN SMK MASUDIRINI FOR 10th GRADE STUDENTS ON TEACHING WRITING SKILL IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2019/2020

Many studies have been conducted on the application of Edmodo in the classroom. However research on Edmodo as a scaffolding technique in teaching English for a vocational school has been rarely found. This research aims at investigating the implementation of Edmodo as a scaffolding technique in teaching writing in English as a Foreign language. The purpose is to investigate whether there is a significant difference on the writing competencies of the students before and after using Edmodo. The study employed pretest and posttest design. The sample was 39 students of the tenth grade of SMK Masudirini in the academic year of 2019/2020, and all of them were selected as the sample of the study. The data were collected by observing the teachers and students’ activities, interviewing, and using pretest and posttest. The results of the test were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Quantitative data were analyzed using t-test. The result indicated that the students can learn using Edmodo as a scaffolding technique in creating narrative texts. It was found that there was a significant difference on the writing competencies of the students before and after using Edmodo. This implied that Edmodo has been successfully used as scaffolding technique in teaching narrative text in English. It can be concluded that the application of Edmodo is not only effective for teaching writing in English through online learning platform but also promote the 21st century learning in vocational high school in Bali.

Virtual Laboratory to Support a Practical Learning of Micro Power Generation in Indonesian Vocational High Schools

Abstract The rapid changes in industrial revolution 4.0 demand change in education, especially at vocational education. Teachers in Vocational High School (VHS) in Indonesia are expected to bring technology-based innovations to achieve success in learning. Learning facilities are one of the factors supporting the success of learning class. Ideally, Indonesian Vocational High Schools have facilities and infrastructure following industrial. Currently, schools have difficulty providing learning support facilities and infrastructure following those in the industry. Thus, the equipment in the school laboratory is irrelevant to the existing equipment in the industry. The practicum apparatus gap between VHS and industry requires appropriate and effective solutions. The gap occurred in practical learning of micro power generation Indonesian VHS. On the other hand, virtual laboratories in the learning process can help students learn an object that cannot be presented in the classroom. By using virtual laboratories, students learn to use industry apparatus through virtual forms. This research aims to overcome the problem of practical learning in VHS, especially on practical learning of micro power generation through the virtual laboratory. This study used the 4D model approach (Define, Design, Develop, and Disseminate). The result showed that the virtual laboratory of micropower generation effectively supported learning and transfer of knowledge in practical learning, especially during the covid 19 pandemics.

Evaluation of shielded metal arc welding learning in vocational high school

This study aims to determine the level of planning, implementation, and assessment of learning outcomes in the XI class of shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) techniques at the state vocational high school 1 Sedayu, Bantul Regency. This type of research is a descriptive study with a survey method. Data collection using a questionnaire. The study population was 90 students of class XI state vocational high school 1 Sedayu. The sample was taken the same as the population. Data collection using a questionnaire. The data analysis technique used a quantitative descriptive analysis. Based on the data analysis results, the planning category is medium, with a mean of 29.48. The implementation is a very high category with a mean of 49.60, the assessment of learning outcomes categorized as high with a mean of 10.68. The results showed that the evaluation SMAW technical learning was in the high category. Results also showed that the level of evaluation of the SMAW technique learning on planning is in the medium category and the evaluation of the implementation of the SMAW technique learning was in the very high category.

Analisis Uji Kelayakan Penerapan Media Pembelajaran Instalasi Motor Listrik Berbasis Augmented Reality

Electric motor installation learning in Vocational High School (SMK) is often problematic because students have not been able to adapt to the self-directed learning system implemented by teachers. In addition, the media used in the self-learning process is still less effective, because it only uses learning modules. Therefore, students have difficulty in understanding the subject matter of the installation of electric motors. The purpose of this research is to create Learning media based on Augmented Reality that is feasible for electric motor installation subjects. Developed learning media are equipped with manuals and markers. This research uses Research and Development (R & D) method using a 4-D model through four stages namely stage I (define), stage II (design), stage III (develop), and stage IV (disseminate). Learning media based on AR was tested on 28 students of SMK Negeri 1 Padang at grade XI TITL A and 29 students at grade XI TITL B. The results of the average feasibility test of grade XI TITL A and grade XI TITL B were 86.63% in the highest feasible category.

Geometry learning in vocational high school: Investigating the students’ difficulties and levels of thinking

Student’s difficulties and low-level thinking in geometry topic is not a new problem in mathematics education. It is portrayed on student’s low achievement both on national and international tests. Van Hiele’s model has been used as a useful framework to justify student’s difficulties as well as their level of thinking in geometry. Therefore, the aim of this study to investigate student’s difficulties and level of thinking using Van Hiele’s theory. Participants in this study were 12th grades vocational high school students. This study is descriptive qualitative research with a phenomenology approach. Data has been collected through a test and interviews. Further, the obtained data were analyzed by looking for a specific theme, then, the researcher found the inter-theme relationship in order to gain a proper understanding of student’s difficulties in geometry and level of student’s geometrical thinking. Based on data analysis, there are some difficulties faced by the student such as, unable to properly identify the geometry shapes based on their formal definition, lack of visualization ability, failed to understand specific terms or symbols of geometry, insufficiency in providing proper reasoning related relationship within geometric shapes. Moreover, it can be concluded that most of the students are on Level 1 of geometry thinking.

The implementation of block-system learning on the expertise competence of automotive lightweight vehicle engineering in vocational high school

The objective of this study was to understand the following: (1) the effectiveness of block system learning to student learning outcomes. (2) the diffrences in student learning outcomes between those who use block and non-blok learning system in public vocational high schools in Batang District. This study includes a type of descriptive quantitative research with a survey approach. Data were collected through observation, interview, and documentation. The population is the whole school vocational high schools in Batang District. This research uses purposive sampling consisting of three vocational high schools. The result showed that: (1) the effectiveness of block system learning in vocational high school in Batang District can be seen of the result students that average value of expertise competency test (UKK) has meet the minimal completeness criteria (KKM) specified by the school at 75.00. In SMK Negeri 1 Warungasem, the average UKK value in the 2017/2018 academic year was 76.83, increasing to 82.32 in the 2018/2019 academic year with an increase of 5.4. Furthermore, in SMKN 1 Blado, UKK value average in the 2017/2018 school year amounted to 77.48, rising to 81.81 in the 2018/2019 school year with an increase of 4.3.(2) the comparison of student learning outcomes between the use of block and non-block system learning in the TKRO major at public vocational high schools in Batang District seen from the average UKK grades for the 2018/2019 school year that the use of block system learning is superior to non-block system learning.

Meeting Teachers' and Learners' Perceptions on Mobile Learning: A Case of Indonesian Vocational High School in Surakarta City

Information and communication technology (ICT) has become the main resource to be devoted for most countries in this world. The government of Indonesia has made a regulation by the minister of education and culture in term of implementing curriculum 2013 which includes student center learning and scientific approach as the basis of ICT application. This study discusses the perception of teachers and learners regarding to the implementation of mobile learning in vocational high school. It is a mixed method study where undertakes interviews and surveys coming from two different schools. In analyzing the teachers and learners' perceptions towards implementation of mobile learning, it was used unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) as the guiding model. The data from the survey was analyzed by using SPSS, while finding the contributors key was done by applying percentage analysis. The findings showed that most of teachers and learners at vocational high school in Surakarta city are familiar with mobile ICT. They are capable to operate and use it for some purposes such as; downloading educational material, search for definitions of words or terms, and send assignments to accomplish the learning goals.

The Implementation of Team Assisted Individualization Learning Model by Blended Learning in Vocational High School

The emergence of the Covid-19 virus in Indonesia has caused in the learning process in schools to be changed into learning at home. The learning process is conducted by distance learning that makes use of technological developments. This study aims to determine the effect of the team assisted individualization (TAI) learning model by blended learning using Schoology on student learning results. This study uses a quantitative approach with a method of quasi-experimental design. Class X of Multimedia students in SMK Negeri 6 Surakarta were selected as the research sample. The experimental group was given a blended learning model using Schoology and team assisted individualization (TAI), and the control class was given a blended learning model using Schoology. The collected data in the form of learning test outcomes were used to find out the student cognitive ability, and observations were used to define the affective and psychomotor ability. The hypothesis t-test used independent-sample assessment with a 0.05 error level, showing the posttest learning results for both classes with a score of 0.002<0.05, which means that there are differences in learning outcomes between the two classes. Moreover, there was an improvement in student learning outcomes with the experiment class, gaining a total score of 0.3125, higher than 0.1354 of the control class.
