THE EFFECTIVENESS OF LEARNING ENGLISH VOCABULARY USING THE MODELLING THE WAY METHOD

This qualitative study investigates the effectiveness of the modeling the way (MTW) method in enhancing the learning of English vocabulary among third-year students at MTS Ta'dib Al-Mu'allimin Al-Islamy. The MTW method, which emphasizes the role of modeling and imitation in language learning, was implemented in a controlled classroom setting to assess its impact on students' vocabulary acquisition. The data were collected through observations, interviews, and a vocabulary test administered before and after the intervention. The findings indicate that the MTW method significantly improved students' vocabulary retention and recall, with a notable increase in their ability to use new words in context. Furthermore, the study highlights the importance of teacher modeling and student engagement in the learning process. Then, this study suggests that the MTW method can be a valuable tool for English language instructors seeking to enhance their students' vocabulary skills. The study's implications for language teaching and learning are discussed for emphasizing the potential of the MTW method to improve students' language proficiency and overall academic performance.

The Difficulties That Faced Libyan Students in Learning English Vocabulary and Understanding Academic Texts

This study examines Libyan students' difficulties in acquiring the English language and comprehending academic writing. The research delineates particular vocabulary-related challenges and their effects on reading comprehension and academic achievement. A quantitative methodology was employed, utilizing a questionnaire administered to 32 students from the English department at Aljufra University. The results demonstrate that students face considerable difficulties in enhancing their vocabulary, employing words correctly, and comprehending phrasal verbs. The challenges are frequently intensified by cultural and linguistic disparities between Arabic and English, impeding students' ability to identify equivalent concepts in both languages. It also reveals that many students rely on traditional learning methods, such as dictionaries, flashcards, and repetition. While these strategies are somewhat effective, they are insufficient for mastering the complexities of academic English. The research highlights the necessity for educational institutions to provide additional support, including targeted vocabulary instruction, workshops, and one-on-one tutoring, to enhance students' academic writing and comprehension skills. Over 60% of the participants expressed the need for more excellent institutional support in academic writing, emphasizing the importance of structured resources to improve their learning outcomes. The results further emphasize the challenges associated with phrasal verbs and complex vocabulary, which remain common obstacles for non-native speakers. Addressing these areas through culturally responsive teaching techniques and providing real-world examples could make learning more relatable for students. The research underlines the importance of a comprehensive approach to vocabulary learning that incorporates both traditional and modern methods. Educators' focused effort to provide vocabulary support, academic assistance, and culturally relevant instruction is essential for improving Libyan students' vocabulary, enhancing their comprehension of scholarly texts, and ultimately enabling their educational success.

An Experimental Study on the Effect of AIGC on High School Students’ English Words Memory

Vocabulary memorizing is the foundation of English learning, and improving students’ vocabulary memorizing efficiency occupies an essential place in English learning. However, the current vocabulary teaching activities are stereotyped in design and superficial in practice and fail to achieve the teaching goal of improving students’ vocabulary learning ability. With the development of AI, its function for learning is obvious. Therefore, based on AIGC, this study designs an experiment with 60 students from two parallel classes in grade one of a high school in Pingjiang County as the research object. The author adopts the literature method, investigation method, and experimental method. After referring to lots of related literature at home and abroad and conducting the investigation and analysis of the current situation of English vocabulary learning, the design principles and strategies for this experiment are put forward. At the end of the practice, the English vocabulary test and questionnaire survey were used as research tools to collect experimental data, and the SPSS27.0 software was used for statistics and analysis. The results show that AIGC can stimulate students’ interest in vocabulary memorizing, promote memorizing efficiency, and enhance the ability to use the vocabulary.

This paper aims to explain the importance of improving the efficiency of English vocabulary learning and discuss the effective methods of English vocabulary learning in high school, in order to help more students find their own learning methods, improve vocabulary memory and application skills, and lay a solid foundation for follow-up learning, examination, and even work.

Study on Vocabulary Memorization Strategies of English Majors

English vocabulary learning is an important foundation for English majors to improve their language ability. With the development of science and technology, various vocabulary memorization APPs come into being, providing diverse learning tools for English learning. The purpose of this paper is to explore the vocabulary memorization strategies and their effects of English majors' vocabulary memorization using the three mainstream APPs, namely, Baicizhan, MoMo, and Bubei Vocabulary, with a view to providing practical guidance and theoretical reference for vocabulary learning of English majors.

PROBLEMS AND PRACTICAL NEEDS IN LEARNING VOCABULARY IN HIGHER EDUCATION

This study analyzed the problems and practical needs of English vocabulary learning among low-score students at a state university in Mataram, Lombok, Indonesia. To provide appropriate instructional materials, learning tasks, or assessment tasks, a need analysis of the student’s prior knowledge is the most important thing that should be done by a teacher. The research involved forty students and used qualitative methods, including questionnaires and interviews, to collect data. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative methods, such as data reduction, display, analysis, and conclusion. The results of this study show that there are problems in vocabulary learning faced by students such as problems with inaccurate pronunciation, problems in knowing the meaning of too much vocabulary, problems in dealing with grammatical alterations, and problems in using words appropriately. On the other hand, students' practical needs are engaging in learning with interactive activities in the form of games/discussions in class, practicing the words adequately, and asking for feedback for better learning improvement. Future research can further examine overcoming the problems found by linking them directly to practical needs.

Educaplay as a tool to potentiate English vocabulary retention and learning

Introduction: A lack of vocabulary poses a major barrier to mastering English, often leading to communication challenges. Technology can support and facilitate the teaching-learning process, notably in the acquisition of a foreign language. Thus, this research explores the impact of Educaplay, on vocabulary acquisition among EFL high school students in southern Ecuador. Methodology: This study applied a quasi-experimental design, with a sample of 60 high school students, selected through a purposeful method. To collect data a pre-test, post-test, an observation checklist, and graded vocabulary activities were employed. The significance was measured with t-student and ANOVA. Results: Educaplay evidenced to be an effective technological tool to support students' retention and improvement of vocabulary as shown by the p-value of 4.86e-15 and the F-value (49.000) and p-values (0.000). Discussion: Implementing interactive and engaging activities through Educaplay and aligned with the teacher's guidance allowed participants to increase their vocabulary, thus they understood when and how to use different terms and the correct spelling of these words. Conclusion: Participants improved their vocabulary proficiency and increased their motivation to study this language. Additionally, the findings unveil that incorporating Educaplay in the classroom promoted a productive and interactive learning environment.

The effectiveness of using visual communication in teaching vocabulary to non-English majors students at the Foreign Languages Center of Nguyen Tat Thanh University

Due to the essence of English vocabulary learning and its challenges, teachers tend to be in search of effective pedagogical techniques. The current case study aims to explore the usefulness of visual media in teaching vocabulary at Nguyen Tat Thanh University. A total of 240 non-English majors completed an online survey to express their opinions on using visual media in vocabulary class. Findings revealed the benefits, such as interesting learning conditions, stronger word memorization, improved learning strategies, high contexts for word practice, and convenient word meaning presentation. The perceived reasons were interesting, memorable content, different kinds of visualizations, interactive and extensive exercises, and the use of many senses. The results have a few applications to EFL vocabulary teaching and learning at the university. This study could make contributions to future studies as its findings delineated that visual media adapted from the coursebook can facilitate students’ vocabulary learning and foster their learning motivation. ® 2024 Journal of Science and Technology - NTTU

Effect of a Self-Regulated Vocabulary Learning Mobile Application on EFL Students' Vocabulary Learning Achievement and Motivation

The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a self-regulated vocabulary learning mobile application (SRVL-MAPP) to improve English as a foreign language (EFL) students’ English vocabulary learning achievement and motivation. To evaluate the effectiveness of SRVL-MAPP, an experiment was conducted with 60 fourth-grade students from a primary school in Henan Province, China. These students were divided into two classes and randomly assigned to either the experimental group, which used SRVL-MAPP, or the control group, which used a mobile vocabulary learning application (NSRVL-MAPP) without the SRL mechanism, with 30 students in each group. The experiment lasted for three weeks. The results revealed that students in the experimental group outperformed those in the control group in both vocabularies learning achievement and motivation. In addition, the results also indicated that SRVL-MAPP significantly improved the English vocabulary learning achievement and motivation of field-dependent learners, while no such effect was observed for field-independent learners.

Junior high school students learning English as a foreign language (EFL) in countries where English is neither the first nor the second language face significant challenges in acquiring vocabulary due to the infrequent use of English outside the classroom and monotonous teaching techniques. However, in the digital era, innovative educational tools like Digital Flashcard-based gamification offer an interactive and engaging solution. This study aims to understand junior high school EFL students' perceptions of learning English vocabulary through gamification using Digital Flashcards. The research was conducted as Classroom Action Research (CAR) and involved 32 junior high school students in Madiun District, Indonesia, learning English as a foreign language (EFL). Over eight meetings, these students engaged in learning animal-related vocabulary using Digital Flashcard-based gamification. Data were collected through pre-test and post-test and interviews to gather students' perceptions of the learning experience. The results indicate that students' vocabulary mastery significantly improved after using gamification-based Digital Flashcards, with an average increase of 15 points. The pre-test average score was 60, which increased to 75 in the post-test. The gamification elements (story, mechanics, aesthetics, and technology) enhanced students' exposure, attention, and enthusiasm during learning. Vocabulary mastery was effectively facilitated through diverse gamified activities. This study demonstrates that incorporating Digital Flashcards in a gamified format is an effective tool for improving vocabulary learning among EFL students.

Picture Cards Game: The Strategy to Facilitate Differentiated Learning in Teaching English Writing Skills for Young Learners

Developing strong writing skills is essential for young students. This research investigates the implementation of picture card games as a tool to facilitate differentiated learning in writing instruction. This study explored how picture card games can be adapted to meet the diverse needs and abilities of young students. It examines the effectiveness of this approach in improving writing skills, including vocabulary and sentence structure. It also explored the impact of picture card games on students' engagement and motivation in writing activities. This study explored the potential of picture card games as a learning tool in middle school located in Dlingo, Yogyakarta. This study investigated the use of mixed methods to understand students' experiences with the use of picture card games. This study used a mixed methods approach, which combined quantitative and qualitative data collection techniques. In the quantitative aspect, this study used questionnaires to collect data from a group of seventh grade students consisting of 32 students. These questionnaires tended to ask closed questions with pre-determined answer options, which allowed this study to collect numerical data on students' perceptions. The findings showed a moderately successful implementation (76%) of picture card games, suggesting a positive student response and contribute to the understanding of different learning strategies and their potential to improve students' writing skills in a fun and engaging way. Additionally, with a moderate rating of 77.3%, the study confirmed the benefits associated with using picture card games for English vocabulary learning. The findings suggest that there are still possibilities for improvement to maximize the potential of the picture card game.

Utilizing Quizzes on the Duolingo to Promote Students Vocabulary Mastery

This research aims to find out the effectiveness of Duolingo games to help students' vocabulary mastery and describe students' perceptions of learning English using the Duolingo application. One of problems found in learning English is a lack of vocabulary that can make it difficult for students to understand texts, speak, listen, and write effectively. Limited student emphasis on acquiring vocabulary in class. In addition, schools that still use conventional learning methods make students bored. This research was conducted using qualitative methods using questionnaires and interviews to determine student perceptions. This research was conducted in one of Islamic senior High School in Tasikmalaya involving 33 students from class X participants. The results of this study indicate that students give a positive perception about the Duolingo application because most students (79%) agree more with learning English vocabulary using the Duolingo application as a medium of learning vocabulary. Apart from it, there are several advantages that can be drawn from using the Duolingo application as a medium for learning English vocabulary: 1) the Duolingo application make the students easy to understand the material; 2) the Duolingo application made the students more enthusiastic in learning English vocabulary; 3) the Duolingo application can eliminate boredom in learning; and 4) the Duolingo application encourage the students for generating new idea in learning.

Application of the Singing Method in Learning English Vocabulary as an Effort to Increase Student Interest in Learning

Singing is a fun activity for children. Therefore, this method can be applied in learning English vocabulary, which is in fact a foreign language. Vocabulary learning is the first step for students to learn a language. At this stage of vocabulary learning, a fun method is needed to eliminate the notion that English is a language that is difficult to learn. The aim of this research is to find out to what extent the singing method for learning English vocabulary can increase students' interest or motivation to learn. The research used qualitative research methods using interviews and documentation in the data collection process and used data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and data verification in the data analysis process. The research results show that using the singing method in learning English vocabulary can increase students' enthusiasm for learning. This can be seen from the enjoyable learning process, and this situation has an impact on students' scores, which have increased, namely Melia Nazwa Putri's mid-semester scores was 75, her final semester scores was 85, as well as Muhammad Iqbal Ashari's mid-semester score was 80 to 85, and Jessica Safa Arbenita's mid-semester score was 80 to 83. In this way, students' scores increased from the scores obtained during the mid-semester assessment (PTS) and the scores obtained during the final semester assessment (PAS).

Role Of Proficiency In Source Language Activation While Learning English Lexemes In A Cross-Linguistic Context

The study aimed to address the lexemic cross-linguistic influence (CLI) mechanism and the role of proficiency in activating the source language of influence. The multilingual, Gujari-speaking English lexical learner participated in the study through the discourse completion tasks and self-assessment tests. The study identified evidence of lexemic influence[1] from already learned languages at form and concept levels while English lexical items were used. The study found that Urdu as L2 offered a facilitative role compared to Gujari and Pahari in influencing learning English vocabulary as Ln. The results indicate that L2 Urdu serves as the primary source of lexemic influence on English (Ln), which is shaped by the higher level of proficiency in the Urdu Language. Hence, the pattern of influence was from higher to higher and Urdu as an L2 also functions as a filter for other language features when acquiring L3 lexemes.

The Effectiveness of Using Lontara Bugis Makassar Script in English Vocabulary Teaching

Vocabulary teaching, especially in early childhood, must be emphasized, because having sufficient vocabulary will make it easier for children to communicate. The Lontara script is a regional language that is now almost forgotten by the younger generation; therefore, this research tries to integrate the Lontara script in learning English vocabulary. The type of research used in this research is quantitative research with experimental methods. In this study, researchers used the One-Group Pre-Test-Post-Test Design. The data obtained can be interpreted to be in positive ranks, with an average value (mean ranks) equal to 24.50, and a total value (sum of ranks) equal to 1176.00. This means that there is an increase in post-test scores after treatment, which means that the integration of Lontara Bugis script in learning English vocabulary is effective in improving understanding of English vocabulary for fifth-grade students at MI Darul Abrar Balle Village, MIS Arrahman Labuaja, and MIS UKI Siputanre Cakkela, which are in Kahu District, Bone Regency, South Sulawesi Province.

Under the influence of traditional English teaching, coupled with the constraints of ideological concepts, geographic environment and economic conditions, teachers and students in junior and senior high schools only pay attention to the learning of English vocabulary, grammar and sentence patterns, neglecting the ability to listen and speaking in English, which leads to the fact that students are afraid to open their mouths to speak English, and such a form of education creates a significant obstacle to the student's English learning. With the introduction of the new standard, cultivating students' communicative ability and focusing on their overall development have become the general objectives of the English curriculum, and cultivating students' oral expression ability and verbal communication abilities are the primary tasks of English teaching.

AN IMPACT OF GAME-BASED TEACHING ON VOCABULARY LEARNING OF THIRD GRADE STUDENTS IN SHENZHEN QIANHAI ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

This research discussed game-based teaching in third-grade English as an entry point and proposed corresponding teaching strategies for existing problems. The objectives of this research were: 1) to find out the impact of game-based teaching on the English vocabulary learning of the third-grade students in Shenzhen Qianhai Elementary School; and 2) to find out the satisfaction level of third-grade elementary school students with the use of game-based teaching methods to improve their English learning. This study aims to inspire third-grade English educators. According to the analysis of the data using SPSS, the results revealed that the average of mean scores was 3.66 and the average of S.D. was 0.71, with the highest mean score (=4.0) and the lowest score (=3.50), while the highest S.D. was 0.85 and the lowest S.D. was 0.53. Then, by looking closely at how English is taught through games in third-grade classrooms now and finding the problems teachers are having putting it into practice, several major problems become clear. These include teachers' biased views of game-based teaching, teachers' haphazard use of game methods, a lack of variety and newness in game materials, and students who aren't interested enough. Building upon these findings, the research proposes tailored teaching strategies aligned with the learning characteristics of third-grade students and the demands of the English curriculum. These strategies include meticulous preplanning to ensure the suitability of game teaching, providing moderate guidance to enhance student participation and engagement, fostering interactive learning atmospheres through verbal and non-verbal exchanges, and facilitating post-game reflection to stimulate critical thinking and optimize teaching effectiveness.
