Effect of Organic Nutrients and Zinc Biofortification on Growth and Yield of Sponge Gourd (Luffa cylindrica L.) CV. Mahy Harita

A field experiment was carried out at Orchard, Department of Horticulture, Annamalai University, Faculty of Agriculture, TamilNadu during 2023-2024. The experiment was laid out in RBD with fifteen treatments in three replications. The organic manures used in the experiment were farm yard manure (25 t ha-1) and enriched manure (1 t ha-1) as soil application along with consortium biofertilizer (2 kg ha-1) and foliar application of biostimulants viz., panchagavya (3%), sea weed extract (3%) and effective microbial inoculants (2%). The zinc in the form of Bacillus subtilis @ 10 and 20g was applied as soil application. The results of the experiment revealed that the growth parameters viz., vine length, number of leaves, leaf length, leaf breadth and leaf area were recorded the highest in the treatment that received the application of farmyard manure 25 t ha-1combined with panchagavya (3%) as foliar application and Bacillus subtilis @ 20g. The yield attributes viz., the highest number of fruits plant-1, fruit length, fruit girth, fruit weight, fruit yield plant-1 and the zinc uptake in fruit were registered in the treatment which received the application of enriched manure @1 t ha1 combined with panchagavya (3%) as foliar application and Bacillus subtilis @ 20g (T11) respectively.

Changes in morphological and physiological traits of urban trees in response to elevated temperatures within an Urban Heat Islands.

Urban Heat Islands (UHI) are a common phenomenon in metropolitan areas worldwide where the air temperature is significantly higher in urban areas than in surrounding suburban, rural or natural areas. Mitigation strategies to counteract UHI effects include increasing tree cover and green spaces to reduce heat. The successful application of these approaches necessitates a deep understanding of the thermal tolerances in urban trees and their susceptibility to elevated urban temperatures. We evaluated how the photosynthetic thermal optimum (Topt), photosynthetic heat tolerance (T50), and key leaf thermoregulatory morphological traits (leaf area, specific leaf area, leaf width, thickness and LDMC) differ between conspecific trees growing in 'hot [UHI]' vs. 'cool' parts of Montreal, Canada (with a difference of 3.4°C in air temperature), to assess the ability of seven common tree species to acclimation to higher temperatures. We hypothesized that individuals with hotter growing temperatures would exhibit higher Topt and T50, as well as leaf thermoregulatory morphological traits aligned with conservative strategies (e.g., reduced leaf area and increased leaf mass) compared to their counterparts in the cooler parts of the city. Contrary to our a priori hypotheses, leaf area increased with growing temperatures and only four of the seven species had higher T50 and only three had higher Topt values in the hotter area. These results suggest that many tree species cannot acclimate to elevated temperatures and that the important services they provide, such as carbon capture, can be negatively affected by high temperatures caused by climate change and/or the UHI effect. The ability vs inability of tree species to acclimate to high temperatures should be considered when implementing long term tree planting programs in urban areas.

The Influence of Micronutrients on Growth Performance of Ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc.) CV. Mahima

The present investigation entitled, “The influence of micronutrients on growth performance of ginger (zingiber officinale) cv. mahima” was conducted at All India Co-ordinated Research Project on Spices, Asond Block, Central Experiment Station, Wakawali, Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth, Dapoli during 2023-24. Experiment was laid out with total nine treatments and three replications each in present study. The experimental findings revealed that the treatment, T1 i.e. RDF + Foliar Spray of ZnSO4 @ 0.5 % recorded better results in number of tillers per platnt (12.57), plant height (77.65 cm), number of leaves per plant (76.03), leaf length (23.25 cm) and leaf width (3.08 cm). Thus, it was concluded that the treatment T1 (RDF + Foliar Spray of ZnSO4 @ 0.5 %) was found to be the best for growth performance of ginger (Zingiber officinale rosc.) under Konkan agroclimatic conditions.

Agro-Morphological Parameters and Yield of Taro (Colocasia esculenta) Under Endogenous Soil Fertility Management Practices in the North Sudanian Zone of Burkina Faso

In the commune of Sourgoubila, province of Kourwéogo (Burkina Faso), taro production by women is a long-standing practice that takes place on degraded land that they have reclaimed through endogenous agricultural practices. The objective of this study is to assess the effects of different soil fertility management practices and to determine the agro-morphological parameters and yield of taro under endogenous soil fertility management practices. To this end, soil sampling was initially conducted in soils under sustainable land management practices in the villages of Sourgoubila and Guèla. Subsequently, morphological parameters and taro yield were determined under endogenous soil fertility management practices for a period of two years. Regardless of the site, the endogenous practices employed by women to reclaim degraded soils under taro cultivation resulted in a 162% increase in total soil carbon and a 0.54 unit increase in pH. The endogenous soil fertility management practices employed at Guèla and Sourgoubila resulted in a significant increase in the assimilable phosphorus content, with a 60% increase observed at Guèla and a 246% increase observed at Sourgoubila, in comparison to the soil without management. The most favourable growth parameters were identified with the endogenous soil fertility management practices employed by women at the Sourgoubila site, regardless of the type of variables observed. The plant height exhibited a range of 85 to 105 cm at Sourgoubila and 76 to 96 cm at Guèla in 2022 and 2023, respectively. On average, the height of taro plants increased by 24.60% annually. The leaf length and width exhibited a range of 35 to 40 cm, with an average leaf length increasing by 11.36% per year. The number of pups varied from 5 to 8, with an annual decrease of 24%. Identifying genetic determinants of forage sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (Moench)] adaptation through GWAS

BackgroundForage sorghum is a highly valued crop in livestock feed production due to its versatility, adaptability, high productivity, and resilience under adverse environmental conditions, making it a crucial option for sustainable forage production. This study aimed to investigate ninety-five forage sorghum genotypes and identify the marker – trait associations (MTAs) in adaptive traits, including yield and flowering through genome-wide association studies (GWAS).ResultsUsing 41,854 polymorphic SNPs, a GWAS involving the GLM, MLM, and FarmCPU models was performed to analyse fourteen adaptive traits. The population structure revealed the presence of two subpopulation groups. Linkage disequilibrium (LD) plots showed varying degrees of LD decay across the chromosomes, with an average LD decay of 19.49 kbp. Twelve common significant QTNs, encoding 17 putative candidate genes, were simultaneously co-detected and studied by at least two or more GWAS methods. Three QTNs were associated to days to 50% flowering; two each to leaf-to-stem ratio and number of nodes per plant; and one each to plant height, leaf width, number of leaves per plant, stem girth, and internodal length. Six candidate genes were associated with days to 50% flowering, two each with leaf width, stem girth, leaf-to-stem ratio, and number of nodes per plant, and one each with plant height, number of leaves per plant, and internodal length.ConclusionFarmCPU was identified as the most suitable and effective among all the models for controlling both false positives and false negatives. Further in-depth analysis of the newly discovered QTNs may lead to the identification of new candidate genes for the trait of interest. These studies elucidate gene functions and could transform forage sorghum breeding through marker-assisted selection and transgenic approaches, accelerating the development of superior forage sorghum varieties and enhancing global food security.

Phenotypic characterization of Echinochloa species in California rice

AbstractTwo independent greenhouse experiments were conducted in December 2020 and July 2021 in Davis, CA to characterize Echinochloa crus‐galli (L.) P. Beauv., Echinochloa colona (L.) Link, Echinochloa oryzicola (Vasinger) Vasinger and Echinochloa walteri (Pursh) A. Heller found in California rice systems based on their morphological traits. Phenotypic data was collected on 10 vegetative traits including plant height, number of tillers, flag leaf length, flag leaf width, flag leaf angle, the colour of leaf sheath, leaf blade colour, internode colour, node colour, growth habit and nine reproductive traits including number of days to heading, number of panicles, length of panicle, length of panicle branches, seeds per panicle, panicle weight, seed colour, awn length and awn pattern. High plasticity was observed in all species characterized in both experiments for both vegetative and reproductive traits, indicating potential inter‐specific hybridization. Awn length, days to heading, length of the panicle, length of the panicle branches, plant height, flag leaf angle, and growth habit were significantly higher in the fall experiment for all species indicating photoperiod could play a role in the expression of these traits. Also, high variation was observed for plant height, number of tillers, awn length, panicle weight, seeds/panicle, length of panicle branch, and number of panicles for all species in both experiments. The results from this study indicate morphological diversity currently present in Echinochloa species could contribute to their adaptation to selection pressure imposed by different management tools in California, emphasizing the need for a diversified management approach to effectively control this weed species.

Evaluation of Lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus L.) Genotypes under Northern Dry Zone of Karnataka (Zone III)

Aim: To evaluate the lemongrass genotypes for growth, yield and quality contributing characters. Study Design: Fisher’s method of ANOVA by Panse and Sukhatme. Place and Duration of Study: Department of Plantation, Spices, Medicinal and Aromatic Crops, College of Horticulture, Bagalkot, Karnataka during rabi 2023-24. Methodology: Forty genotypes of lemongrass were assessed for growth, yield and quality parameters. Results: Among forty genotypes, Elite genotype recorded the maximum plant height and petiole length. Whereas, the highest plant spread, number of tillers, leaf length, leaf width and biomass yield per clump, per plot and hectare was found maximum in CKP25 and OD-83 for girth of the tiller at different growth stages. Conclusion: The genotypes superior for growth, yield and quality parameters will be considered for future breeding program.

Partially Substituting Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density with Far-red Photons Differentially Alters Biomass Accumulation and Photochemical Efficiency of Greenhouse Lettuce

Adding far-red (FR) photons to a constant photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) alters photosynthesis, leaf morphology, and biomass accumulation of horticultural plants. However, the influences of partially substituting PPFD with FR photons under the same extended PPFD (ePPFD) on the growth of greenhouse lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is still unknown. In this study, loose-leaf lettuce (‘Dasusheng’) grown in a greenhouse in the fall was implemented using six supplementary light treatments including white plus red (WR) LEDs with substitutive FR photon flux density at 0, 10, 30, 50, 70, and 90 µmol·m−2·s−1 under the same ePPFD (WR139, WR129+FR10, WR109+FR30, WR89+FR50, WR69+FR70, and WR49+FR90, respectively). Lettuce grown with natural light only was designated as NL. The results indicated that supplementary light led to lower plant height, thicker leaves, higher biomass accumulation, higher vitamin C content, higher starch content, and higher total soluble sugar content in lettuce compared with those of lettuce grown under NL. Lettuce grown under WR139 resulted in a 40.0% decrease in plant height, 66.8% increase in leaf thickness, and 34.1% increase in shoot fresh weight compared with those of lettuce grown under NL. No significant differences were observed in leaf width, specific leaf area, shoot fresh weight, root fresh weight, shoot dry weight, root dry weight, soil plant analysis development value, apparent quantum yield, soluble protein content, and light use efficiency of lettuce among the WR139, WR129+FR10, and WR109+FR30 treatments. Furthermore, decreased trends were observed in the biomass accumulation and maximum net photosynthetic rate of lettuce with the increased substituted FR photon flux density. However, an opposite trend was found in the maximum photochemical quantum yield. In conclusion, partially substituting PPFD with FR photons at 10 to 30 μmol·m−2·s−1 had similar effects on the biomass accumulation and nutritional quality of greenhouse lettuce. The FR photons should be applied with the consideration of photon flux density because the results also demonstrated negative effects of excess substituted FR photons for PPFD.

SSR markers based QTL mapping and genetic analysis for yield and yield-attributing traits in bitter gourd (Momordica charantia L.)

The present study was conducted for QTL mapping for yield and other yield attributing traits in bitter gourd using Simple Sequence Repeat (SSR) markers. A total of 630 SSR markers were screened for polymorphism in two contrasting parents (DBGS-2 and Pusa Purvi), out of which only 35 were polymorphic. F1 plants (10 individuals) in which hybridity was ascertained (using these polymorphic markers); were further employed for development of mapping population (F2) consisting of 120 plants. Higher variation was present in the mapping population as evident from the wider range value of the characters. Continuous frequency distribution classes combined with bell-shaped, symmetrical normal distribution curve, revealed the quantitative inheritance nature of the traits studied. Higher PCV than the GCV for all the traits, along with high difference between the PCV and GCV for majority of traits indicated higher influence of environment in expression of these traits in the mapping population. Presence of transgressive segregation was also noted for majority of the traits. Amongst the various linkage groups (LG), LG 4 had the maximum number of markers, covering 171.07 cM map distance. LG4 also possessed the maximum number (nine) of QTLs while LG1 had six. QTL mapping using polymorphic SSRs resulted in detection of a total of 28 QTLs for fourteen traits viz. yield per plant (kg), earliness or flower related traits (node to first female flower, node to first male flower, days to first male flower, male to female flower ratio), fruit traits (fruit number per plant, fruit diameter (cm), fruit length/ diameter ratio, pericarp thickness (mm) and number of seed per fruit) and vegetative traits (internodal length (cm), number of primary branches, leaf width (cm), length and width ratio). The LOD score of these QTLs ranged from 3.01 to 64.47, the total phenotypic variances (PVE) ranged from 1.52 to 34.57 % and additive effects ranged from –3.69 to 17.07. Of the total, nineteen were major QTLs, having PVE >10 %. Three QTLs were detected for yield per plant while a total of seven for the traits imparting earliness viz. days to first male flower, node to first female flower and node to first male flower. Amongst all the QTLs detected, qFrtLDR-4-1 (K) had the maximum LOD (64.47) and PVE (34.57 %) value. Two hotspots were detected with multiple QTLs clustered in the LG 1. The first hotspot possessed four QTLs [qLfW-1-1, qMFR-1-1 (K), qSPF-1-1, qNFmlF-1-1 (K)] while the second had two related to yield per plant [qYldpl-1-1 (K) and qYldpl-1-1]. Many of these QTLs are also being reported for the first time in bitter gourd. The findings of the present study can be used to fasten the bitter gourd improvement by utilizing these in MAS, DNA fingerprinting, genetic mapping, genomics analysis etc.

Diversity and morpho-chemo correlations of Cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum J. Presl) bark oil from Sri Lanka

The wide natural variation of Cinnamomum verum morphology in Sri Lanka suggests the chemo-diversity, which must be revealed for efficient utilization in a vast scope of industries. This study was carried out to determine the variation of essential oil constituents of cinnamon bark from major growing areas of Sri Lanka, morphological markers for oil constituents and genetic relationships for the correlations among major chemical constituents. E-Cinnamaldehyde (CM), (E)-Cinnamyl acetate (CA), Eugenol (EU), Benzyl benzoate (BB), linalool (LN) and β-caryophyllene (CR) were the highest abundant six out of 188 constituents reported through GC-MS analysis of bark essential oil. The mean values and 95% confidence intervals of CM, CA, EU, BB, LN and CR were 65.10±2.4 (60.15, 70.05), 15.93 ±2.14 (11.51, 20.34), 4.07±0.42 (3.19, 4.95), 3.21±0.52 (2.15, 4.28), 1.44 ± 0.16 (1.09,1.79) and 1.31±0.10 (1.11,1.53) respectively. CM was the highest abundant in 29/30 accessions, while CA was the highest abundant only in 1/30. CM varied with growing district. CM was negatively correlated with CA, (r=0.81) at the 0.01% level of significance irrespective of the growing district. The correlation between EU and BB was significant (r=0.49) at 0.01% level of significance. Chemical constituents were linked with the morphological characters: The leaf width (LW) was correlated with EU, (r=0.37) at 0.05% level of significance and the bark thickness (BT) was in a correlation with CR, (r=0.54) at 0.01% level of significance. Gene network model analysis identifying two pathways for CM, CA and BB biosynthesis, and two pathways for EU biosynthesis explained the correlations between major constituents.

Augmenting Rice Defenses: Exogenous Calcium Elevates GABA Levels Against WBPH Infestation

This study investigates the impact of exogenous calcium and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) supplementation on rice growth and stress tolerance under white-backed planthopper (WBPH) infestation. We evaluated several phenotypic traits, including shoot/root length, leaf width, tiller number, panicle length, and relative water content, alongside physiological markers such as oxidative stress indicators, antioxidant enzymes activities, hormonal levels, and amino acids biosynthesis. Our results indicate that WBPH stress significantly reduces growth parameters but calcium and GABA supplementation markedly enhance shoot length (by 26% and 36%) and root length (by 38% and 64%), respectively, compared to WBPH-infested plants. Both supplementations also reduced oxidative stress, as evidenced by decreased H2O2 and O2•− levels and a lower electrolyte leakage. Notably, calcium and GABA treatments increased antioxidant enzyme activities, with GABA boosting catalase (CAT) activity by 800%, peroxidase (POD) by 144%, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) by 62% under WBPH stress. Additionally, calcium and GABA enhanced the accumulation of stress hormones (abscisic acid ABA) and salicylic acid (SA) and promoted stomatal closure, contributing to improved water conservation. This study reveals that calcium regulates the GABA shunt pathway, significantly increasing GABA and succinate levels in both root and shoot. Furthermore, calcium and GABA supplementation enhance the biosynthesis of key amino acids and improve ion homeostasis, particularly elevating calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), and magnesium (Mg) levels under WBPH stress. Overall, this study highlights the potential of exogenous calcium and GABA as effective strategies for enhancing rice plant tolerance to WBPH infestation by modulating various physiological and biochemical mechanisms. Further research is warranted to fully elucidate the underlying mechanisms of action.

The Impact of Varying Ratios of Light Quality Emitted by Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs) on the Butter Lettuce

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are considered the optimal artificial light source for plant factories, yet further research is needed to understand the impact of LED light quality on plant growth. This experiment investigated the growth and development of butter lettuce under varying ratios of red and blue light provided by LEDs. The specific effects of different red and blue light quality ratios on butter lettuce growth were systematically tracked and recorded, with comprehensive measurements of growth parameters and photosynthetic characteristics. Empirical findings revealed that a higher red light component compared to blue light led to improved butter lettuce characteristics. These included increased leaf length and width, elevated plant height, higher relative chlorophyll content, and an increased net photosynthetic rate. The study also highlighted that the light quality requirements of lettuce fluctuate across different growth stages, allowing for adaptable modulation of lighting conditions to align with specific growth stage needs.Total fresh weight, total dry weight and dry matter content of lettuce reached the highest values in the R8B2 treatment with 80% red light and 20% blue light, and the percentage differences reached 29.2%, 23.1% and 13.9%, respectively. Additionally, the photosynthetic chlorophyll content and net photosynthetic rate exhibited maximum percentage differences of 22.22% and 14.6%, respectively. In conclusion, the experimental evidence supports that an R8B2 spectral composition (80% red and 20% blue light) in a controlled indoor setting represents the optimal light environment for the accelerated growth and superior quality of butter lettuce.

A taxonomic re-evaluation of Pittosporum roimata Gemmill & S.N. Carter (Pittosporaceae, Apiales)

Pittosporum roimata Gemmill & S.N. Carter (Pittosporaceae, Apiales) was established in 2018 as an endemic species confined to the Poor Knights Islands group, off the eastern coastline of Northland Aotearoa / New Zealand. The new species was distinguished from P. cornifolium A. Cunn. on the basis of vegetative characters (leaf length, width, petiole length), floral characters (pedicel length, flower colour), and numbers of fruit per stem. The new species was also reported as differing from P. cornifolium by a single substitution within the nrITS cistron, with that data obtained from a paper that did not provide a phylogenetic interpretation of this result, nor specify whether the cultivated plants used were derived from seed obtained from multiple individuals or from cutting grown plants from a limited wild-sourced selection. In this paper the same morphological characters used to separate P. roimata are examined using a much wider sampling of P. cornifolium, and the specimens available for P. roimata. There are very slight differences in leaf width and length, petiole length, and pedicel length in Poor Knights Islands P. roimata specimens seen also in some collections from other northern Aotearoa / New Zealand offshore islands and some mainland stations. Flower colour is not a useful character as this is variable in P. roimata and P. cornifolium, as it is also in many other Aotearoa / New Zealand Pittosporum. On the basis of our morphological assessment we conclude that to maintain the segregation of P. roimata from P. cornifolium at the species rank is impractical, as there is a grading of characters between both species. As plants corresponding to P. roimata occur throughout the range of P. cornifolium, already a variable species, we suggest that, in line with other treatments of Aotearoa / New Zealand Pittosporum, it is better to reduce P. roimata into synonymy of P. cornifolium.

Determination of Local Cherry Tomato Genotypes' Agromorphological Features in Türkiye and Kyrgyzstan

The purpose of this study was to ascertain some morphological traits and interrelationships of 36 genotypes of cherry tomatoes that were gathered from Turkey and Kyrgyzstan. Measurements and observations include flower number of cluster, leaf length, leaf width, leaf attitude, fruit color, fruit neck shape, fruit cross-sectional shape, fruit weight, fruit firmness, time of maturity, number of locules, thickness of pericarp, and total soluable solid content, in accordance with the guidelines of the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV). The genotypes T40 (62.7 g), T24 (50.8 g), T107 (50 g), T103 (41.4 g), and T105 (40.8 g) had the highest average fruit weights, whereas T3 (9.4 g) and K1 (10.6 g) had the lowest fruit weights. The pericarp had an average thickness of 3.82 mm and an average of 2.49 locules. A spherical fruit cross-section was observed in 97.2% of genotypes. Genotype K2 had the highest total soluble solids content (TTSC%) at 9.4%, whereas genotype K13 had the lowest TTSC% at 3.1%. To measure the data, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used. Five separate principle component axes were identified via PCA, and these axes together account for 75.57% of the dataset's variation. These principal components' eigenvalues, which varied from 1.07 to 3.24, showed how much variance was accounted for by each component. The PCA results showed that the genotypes T107, T40, T105, and T87 performed better in PC1 in terms of the number of locules, fruit weight, fruit cross-sectional shape, and pericarp thickness characteristics. Fruit color was influenced by genotypes T90 and T142, fruit firmness by genotype T40, and total soluble solids content by genotype T98. The indigenous cherry tomato varieties from Turkey and Kyrgyzstan were shown to have a large amount of morphological variety, which may be useful for breeding initiatives in the future.

Resource recycling of nitrogen and phosphorus from waste adsorbents: Implications for soil improvement and plant growth

The enrichment of nitrogen and phosphorus in sewage poses a significant risk of resource loss if not effectively recovered and utilized. This study investigates the sustainable management and conservation of these vital nutrients through the recycling of saturated Mg-loaded adsorbents as soil additives for mint (Mentha spicata) cultivation. The effects of recycled waste adsorbents were compared with new adsorbents, commercial compound fertilizers, and struvite, using a control check (CK) to assess their impact on soil nutrient content and plant growth parameters. Results showed that waste adsorbents significantly enhanced soil nutrient content compared to CK. Although nutrient levels in the first 30 days were lower than with commercial fertilizers, a reversal was noted between 30 and 60 days, indicating a slower nutrient release rate. Furthermore, the germination rate and leaf width of mint increased by 13.34 % and 25.38 %, respectively. Significant improvements in plant height, fresh weight, and dry weight demonstrated positive effects on growth. This study confirms the feasibility of recycling waste Mg-loaded adsorbents for the sustainable reutilization of nitrogen and phosphorus resources from wastewater, contributing to enhanced soil health and sustainable agricultural practices.

Efektivitas Pupuk Hayati dan Pupuk Kotoran Sapi Terhadap Pertumbuhan Serta Produksi Tanaman Pakcoy (Brassica rapa L.)

Pakcoy plants have an economic aspect and the business is worth developing or cultivating to meet consumer demand which is increasing over time. Increasing the production of pakcoy plants can be done by improving the fertility of the planting medium by using FertoMax biofertilizer and cow dung fertilizer. This research used a Randomized Block Design with 2 factors and 3 replications to obtain 48 research plots. Factor I of FertoMax Biological Fertilizer (S) which consists of 4 levels, namely: S0 = 0 ml/polybag, S1 = 5 ml/polybag, S2 = 10 ml/polybag, S3 = 15ml/polybag. Factor II Cow Manure (P) which consists of 4 levels, namely: P0 = 0 g/polybag P1 = 100 g/polybag, P2 = 200 g/polybag, P3= 300 g/polybag. The parameters observed in this study were plant height, number of leaves, leaf length, leaf width, tuber diameter, sample plant weight, plant weight per plot. Evaluation of Agronomic and Genetic Diversity in M2V1 Generation of Marigold (Tagetes erecta L.)

Marigold (Tagetes erecta L.) is an ornamental plant widely used as a potted or cut flower due to its vibrant colors and diverse flower shapes. High genetic diversity is essential for successful breeding programs aimed at developing superior varieties. Genetic information can be obtained by estimating variance components and heritability values, key parameters in plant breeding. A high heritability value suggests that genetic factors influence a plant's characteristics more than environmental factors. This study assessed the genetic diversity and performance of vegetative propagation from 2nd generation mutant plants (M2V1). The research was conducted at the Pasir Sarongge experimental field in Cianjur Regency from July to October 2023, using a randomized complete block design with 17 genotypes and three replicates. The genotypes included 14 from vegetative propagation of M2V1 mutant plants and three comparison varieties: “Maharani”, “BAIP 2”, and “BAIP 3”. Data analysis was performed using PKBT-STAT 3.1 software, followed by the honest significant difference (HSD) test at the 5% level. The results revealed significant differences among genotypes in plant height, stem diameter, canopy width, leaf width, flower weight, flower diameter, number of flowers per plant, total flower weight per plant, and flower stalk length. Floret types observed were either all ligulate or all tubuligulate, with flower colors ranging from orange to yellow to white. Traits such as canopy width, flower weight, flower diameter, and stalk length, which exhibited broad genetic diversity and high heritability, can be used for selection in future marigold breeding programs.

Morphology and Allometry of Juvenile Açaí Palms Under Cultivation Conditions in Central Amazonia

Two Amazonian species of açaí palm trees (Euterpe oleracea and Euterpe precatoria) are exploited in the commercial production of açaí pulp or juice. While E. oleracea benefits from developed cultivation technologies, E. precatoria lacks such advancements. Studies on the morphology and development of açaí palms under cultivation conditions can contribute to increasing the productivity of the species. The aim of this study was to carry out morphological characterization, assess growth and development in the juvenile phase of the plants, and obtain allometric models for E. precatoria and E. oleracea. Evaluations were conducted between 44 and 48 months post-planting. Allometric equations were formulated to accurately estimate leaf area. The results showed that E. oleracea begins reproduction earlier and exhibits greater growth in stem dimensions and leaf areas compared to E. precatoria, indicating that E. precatoria can be cultivated at higher planting densities. Allometric models, based on leaf length and width, effectively predicted individual leaf areas for both species, demonstrating their utility in optimizing cultivation strategies.

The Effect of LED Lighting Durations on Growth, Yield and Quality of Mustard (Brassica juncea L.) under Greenhouse Condition

Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) show promise as a radiation source for intensive crop cultivation systems, especially for vegetables in the greenhouse. Regarding mustard greens, most studies have investigated the effects of LED lights at the seedling stage under chamber conditions for microgreens not addressed throughout their growing period up to harvest. Therefore, this study is focused to evaluate the effect of additional LED lighting time from 6 pm on the growth, yield and quality of mustard greens under a greenhouse in Kien Giang province as a typical tropical region. The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized design with 3 replications, from August 1st to September 18th, 2023. Four treatments: AL0, AL2, AL4 and AL6 correspond to lighting durations of 0, 2, 4 and 6 h of LED light, which includes a combination of 3 white lights: 1 pink light, 58 μmol·m−2·s−1 PPFD, and a Blue (18 %): Green (41 %): Red (41 %) ratio. Results showed that AL4 had the most significant positive impact on mustard plant growth, with higher dry and fresh weight, plant height, leaf width and length. However, AL6 inhibited most parameters except leaf number. Additionally, under AL4 conditions, mustard allocated more biomass to leaves, while those under AL6 conditions allocated more biomass to stems. In terms of quality, LED lighting duration negatively influenced protein content. For instance, AL0 showed the significantly greatest protein value (2.87 ± 0.08 g·kg−1) compared to others. Apart from AL0, AL6 had a considerably higher value of protein content (2.58 ± 0.2 g·kg−1) compared to AL2 (1.74 ± 0.04 g·kg−1) and AL4 (2.17 ± 0.07 g·kg−1). The additional durations of LED lighting influenced mature mustard greens’ morphology, physiology and quality, providing valuable scientific information for improving vegetable quality and quantity in tropical zones. HIGHLIGHTS 4 hours of additional LED light had the most significant positive impact on mustard plant growth, with higher dry and fresh weight, plant height, leaf width, and length. Additionally, leaf number increased under 6 hours of additional LED light. Under 4 hours of additional LED light, mustard allocated more biomass to leaves, while those under 6 hours of additional LED light allocated more biomass to stems. Lighting with LED resulted in a lower protein value, and different durations of LED lighting resulted in varying protein content values. GRAPHICAL ABSTRACT

Cell wall remodeling confers plant architecture with distinct wall structure in Nelumbo nucifera.

Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera G.) is a perennial aquatic horticultural plant with diverse architectures. Distinct plant architecture (PA) has certain attractive and practical qualities, but its genetic morphogenesis in lotus remains elusive. In this study, we employ genome-wide association analysis (GWAS) for the seven traits of petiole length (PLL), leaf length (LL), leaf width (LW), peduncle length (PLF), flower diameter (FD), petal length (PeL), and petal width (PeW) in 301 lotus accessions. A total of 90 loci are identified to associate with these traits across 4 years of trials. Meanwhile, we perform RNA sequencing (RNA-seq) to analyze the differential expression of the gene (DEG) transcripts between large and small PA (LPA and SPA) of lotus stems (peduncles and petioles). As a result, eight key candidate genes are identified that are all primarily involved in plant cell wall remodeling significantly associated with PA traits by integrating the results of DEGs and GWAS. To verify this result, we compare the cell wall compositions and structures of LPA versus SPA in representative lotus germplasms. Intriguingly, compared with the SPA lotus, the LPA varieties have higher content of cellulose and hemicellulose, but less filling substrates of pectin and lignin. Additionally, we verified longer cellulose chains and higher cellulose crystallinity with less interference in LPA varieties. Taken together, our study illustrates how plant cell wall remodeling affects PA in lotus, shedding light on the genetic architecture of this significant ornamental trait and offering a priceless genetic resource for future genomic-enabled breeding.
