Sm substitution effect on the critical behaviour of Laves phase Gd1−xSmxCo2 intermetallic nearby the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic phase transition

In this work, we present a comparative and detailed study of the critical behavior near ferromagnetic-paramagnetic phase transition in the intermetallic Laves phase compounds Gd1−xSmxCo2, x = 0.5, 0.6 and 0.7. The investigated samples exhibit a second-order phase transition at Curie temperature TC. The critical exponents β, γ, and δ have been estimated through diverse techniques: the Modified Arrott plot, the Kouvel-Fisher plot, the critical isotherm technique, and the magnetocaloric effect method. The critical exponents values that were determined have been validated using the universal scaling hypothesis, wherein the isotherm magnetization curves M(H) converge into two distinct universal branches below and above TC. The substitution of Gd by Sm changes the universality class in the (Gd,Sm)Co2 compounds. For the sample Gd0.5Sm0.5Co2, the critical exponents obtained are closely consistent with the predictions of the 3D-Heisenberg model featuring a magnetic system with a short-range exchange interaction. While, for both samples Gd0.4Sm0.6Co2 and Gd0.3Sm0.7Co2, the values deviate from known theoretical models and might belong to an unconventional universality class with an intermediate-range exchange interaction.

A review of emerging trends in Laves phase research: Bibliometric analysis and visualization

Abstract The rapid development of modern aerospace and energy industries requires increasingly high service performance of metallic materials. Laves phase intermetallic compounds with the chemical formula AB2-type have attracted much attention due to their high melting point, excellent high-temperature strength, and oxidation resistance, and are regarded as one of the promising candidates for a new generation of high-temperature structural applications. Although it can be identified that Laves phase alloy research has been an active research field in the last 20 years in terms of the trend of literature volume growth, there is still a lack of systematic descriptions and comprehensive overviews of the latest frontiers and hotspots in the field. In this article, a quantitative and visual knowledge mapping of the articles published in the field of Laves phase research in the last 20 years has been carried out based on the bibliometric analysis methodology of Cite Space software. Quantitative analysis of high-frequency keywords to understand the basic development of Laves phase and the evolution of the main research hotspots in each period of time identified the hotspots of common concern seven themes: Laves phase, electronic structure, precipitation, Inconel 718 alloy, phase diagram, high-entropy alloys, and TiAl-based alloys. The analysis of the emergent keywords shows that electronic structure, high-entropy alloys, total energy calculations, and laser cladding can represent the research frontiers of Laves phases. This study provides systematic and valuable reference information to gain insight into the current state of Laves phase research and the evolution of the theme, which will be useful for further research.

Experimental measurement and modeling of lattice thermal expansion and specific heat capacity of C15-Cr2Nb Laves phase intermetallic compound

In order to determine the lattice thermal expansion and specific heat capacity (Cp) of the C15-Cr2Nb Laves phase, an experimental investigation and modeling were carried out in the present paper by employing high-temperature X-ray diffraction (HTXRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). A thorough analytical model was utilized to predict the temperature-dependent variations of enthalpy and specific heat, and the predicted findings were compared to the experimentally measured data. Arc melting was employed to synthesize Cr2Nb samples with distinct hexagonal (C14/C36) and cubic (C15) Laves phase structures, which were then subjected to the appropriate heat treatment. Room temperature XRD patterns, SEM, and EDAX experiments on homogenized samples at 1273 K for 72 h validated the homogeneity and C15 (Fd-3 m) crystal structure of Cr2Nb. Rietveld refinement was used to determine the lattice parameters and relative phase fractions of the constituent phases. The average thermal expansion coefficient was determined to be αai = 0.659 × 10−5 and αVi = 1.977 × 10−5 K−1 respectively. The Cp of the C15-Cr2Nb Laves phase intermetallic compound was measured employing heat flux DSC, utilizing conventional “three-step” procedures, and being reported for the first time. The measured Cp and enthalpy increment data (HT – H298.15) with varying temperatures reported in the present investigation are being correlated utilizing the theoretical model applying the quasi-harmonic Debye Grüneisen model in the temperature range 0–860 K and illustrated different contributions to the total heat capacity i.e., vibrational, anharmonic, and electronic.

Regularities of Changes in the Structure of Different Phases of Deformed Zirconium Alloys as a Result of Raising the Annealing Temperature According to Texture Analysis Data

Based on the data of synchrotron and electron microscopic studies of deformed and annealed Russian zirconium alloys, the possibility of analyzing the structural-phase state and crystallographic texture of individual phases has been demonstrated. A qualitative and quantitative phase analysis of deformed and annealed tubes made of Zr-Nb-(Sn-Fe-O) alloys was carried out using diffraction patterns obtained with synchrotron radiation. The main α-Zr phase and the following additional phases: β-Nb, β-Zr, and the Laves phase (intermetallic compound Zr(Nb,Fe)2), were found in the alloys. According to the results of texture analysis of all phases present in the alloy, the mechanisms of plastic deformation, recrystallization, and phase transformations of the main and additional phases were established. It is shown that during plastic deformation of the Zr-1%Nb alloy, a dynamic phase transformation β-Nb→α-Zr→β-Zr is observed. It is established that during recrystallization, larger grains of α-Zr are misoriented relative to the deformed matrix by rotating the prismatic axes around the basal axes by 30°, while fine grains are improved by polygonization and maintain the orientation of the deformed matrix. Processes for changing the orientation of grains of additional phases as a result of high-temperature annealing are also considered.

Zr-based Laves phases with nitride/hydride ions for ammonia synthesis

Early transition metal-based intermetallic compounds, such as ZrV2, ZrMn2, and ZrCr2, can reversibly absorb large amounts of hydrogen and are of great interest for hydrogen storage. The dissociative hydrogen chemisorption can proceed easily on the surface, allowing the rapid formation of intermetallic hydrides. In this study, we present the results of initial NH3 activity tests conducted on various Zr-based AB2-type intermetallic compounds, free of precious transition metals and rare earth metals. A dissociative hydrogen chemisorption together with nitrogen storage proceeds on AB2-type Laves phase intermetallic compounds accompanied by a lattice expansion. The formed intermetallic nitride hydride ZrCr2N0.4H1.4 exhibits stable catalytic activity as an ammonia synthesis catalyst.

Experimental investigation of lattice thermal expansion and specific heat capacity of C15–Cr2Zr Laves phase intermetallic compound by HTXRD and DSC

The lattice thermal expansion and specific heat capacity of the C15–Cr2Zr Laves phase intermetallic compound were investigated using high temperature X-ray diffraction (HTXRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). All these alloys were prepared by arc melting. Through various heat treatments, the intermetallic compound Cr2Zr with both C14/C36–Cr2Zr and cubic C15–Cr2Zr Laves phase structure was obtained from these ingots. Room temperature XRD profile and scanning electron microscope (SEM) along with energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) experiments on 1573 K/8h homogenized samples have confirmed the homogeneity and C15 (Fd-3m) crystal structure of Cr2Zr. The lattice parameters and relative phase fraction of the constituent phases were evaluated by using Rietveld refinement. The lattice thermal expansion behaviour of the compound was investigated in the temperature range 298 K–1073 K, and the result shows that its unit cell parameters increased exponentially when the temperature increased. The average thermal expansion coefficients were found to be αai = 1.03 × 10−5 K−1 and αvi = 3.08 × 10−5 K−1. The specific heat capacity of the Laves phase Cr2Zr has been measured by using heat-flux DSC by employing the classical three-step method and is being reported for the first time. The heat capacity data obtained in this study have been compared with the theoretical model using quasi-harmonic Debye Grüneisen formalism in the temperature range 0–860 K and shown the various contributions to total heat capacity. The measured heat capacity data was used to obtain enthalpy increment as a function of temperature, which was effectively modelled by first principles based quasi-harmonic approximation and revealed different contributions to total enthalpy. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimental report on the thermal expansion and specific heat capacity of C15–Cr2Zr. A comprehensive set of thermodynamic parameters for C15–Cr2Zr has been established using a combination of measurement and modelling.

The <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$T_{\mathrm {C}}$ </tex-math></inline-formula> is found to be approximately equal to the average of ferromagnetic transition temperatures of the individual components RAl <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">2</sub> (R = Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, and Er). Heat capacity shows a <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$\lambda $ </tex-math></inline-formula> -type transition around <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$T_{\mathrm {C}}$ </tex-math></inline-formula> . The second-order nature of the transition has been confirmed by plotting universal curve with the isothermal magnetic entropy change versus temperature data. Electrical resistivity is metal-like in the paramagnetic region. Thermal expansion and thermal conductivity of RT 2 (R: Gd, Dy, Er; T: Al, Ni) intermetallic compounds for magnetic refrigerator

Highly efficient hydrogen liquefaction is required for upcoming hydrogen energy society. Magnetic refrigeration is expected as a method to realize efficient hydrogen liquefaction, and the performance depends on properties of magnetic materials. RT 2 (R: rare-earth; T: Al, Ni) Laves phase intermetallic compounds with a second-order magnetic phase transition are one of the promising magnetocaloric materials. Thermal expansion, magnetostriction, and thermal conductivity of ErAl2, DyNi2, DyAl2 and GdNi2 were measured in magnetic fields using polycrystalline samples because of the important properties for practical use in a magnetic refrigerator. Thermal expansions showed anomalies at the magnetic transition temperature. However, those in 0 T were nearly the same as copper. Magnetostriction were not as large as magnetocaloric materials with a first-order magnetic phase transition such as TbMn2. Thermal conductivities in 0 T were almost in agreement with the literature data, and magnetic field dependence was small. These results indicate that RT 2 compounds are suitable as magnetic refrigerants for hydrogen liquefaction in practical use.

Shuffle and glide mechanisms of prismatic dislocations in a hexagonal C14 -type Laves-phase intermetallic compound

Complex structured intermetallic compounds often show brittleness at ambient temperature or under high strain rate deformation, but ductility at elevated temperature or low strain rate deformation. The change of dislocation behavior plays a decisive role in the brittle-to-ductile transition. Here, dislocations are studied in a hexagonal structured Laves-phase intermetallic compound with aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy after quasistatic compression at high temperature or high-speed impact at room temperature. Different slip mechanisms are resolved for the prismatic dislocations. Under the high-temperature compression, a shuffle mechanism assisted by diffusion mediates the dislocation motion to form planar defects strictly following the topologically close-packing rules. In contrast, under the high-speed room-temperature impact, the prismatic dislocations prefer to glide on undulated planes that comprise small facets with high atom density.

Structural, Magnetic, and Exchange Bias Behavior of Nickel-Based Ni2CuCrFeAlx (x = 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.5) High-Entropy Alloys

The magnetic properties of powdered and sintered samples of Ni2CuCrFeAlx (x = 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.5) high-entropy alloys were investigated in detail by observing its relation to morphology by SEM, the presence of different phases by XRD, magnetization at the different operating field, and exchange bias with different training of the hysteresis loops. Two structural phases were observed in the sintered Ni2CuCrFeAlx HEAs, Al-free BCC solid solution in FCC matrix, and Al-containing C15 laves phase intermetallic compounds. In both cases, Ni, Cu, Cr, and Fe substituted randomly into the lattice that would result in the formation of martensitic structure with ferromagnetic characteristics beyond Tc. These results showed the corresponding state of Ni2CuCrFeAlx HEAs in which Cr- and Fe-rich particles (BCC structure) were noticed with higher Al content, and moreover, Ni-rich particle crystallizes in B2 structure dispersed in BCC phase. The substitution of Al in Ni2CuCrFeAlx composition increases the saturation magnetization with increasing applied field, regardless the alloy showing FCC, BCC and B2 phase structure during sintering. In spite of antiferromagnetic constituents of Cr in Ni2CuCrFeAlx alloy, polycrystalline HEAs exhibit higher ferromagnetic interaction at the interface of Ni-rich phase, which induces the exchange bias effect from the negative shift of magnetic hysteresis loop, observed in FC and ZFC modes. Likewise, sintered alloys are hard materials, indicated by their high values of exchange bias along with their coercivity. The addition of Al in Ni2CuCrFeAlx alloy improves the magnetic properties due to the existence of order–disorder phase transition from L21 to B2 or B2 to A2 phase.

On the magnetism of C14 Nb(Fe89.4Al10.6)2 Laves phase intermetallic compound

The C14 Nb(Fe89.4Al10.6)2 Laves phase intermetallic compound was investigated by DC magnetization (M) measurements performed in the temperature (T) interval from 20 to , under an applied magnetic field (H) ranging between 50 and . Magnetization curves were recorded in the field-cooled (FC) and in the zero-field-cooled (ZFC) modes. They clearly showed an irreversible character that vanished at . Both magnetization curves exhibited well-defined peaks around whose positions were H-independent, so they were identified as the compound's Néel temperature. The existence of the irreversibility whose degree decreases with H testifies to a re-entrant character of magnetism in the studied compound. An increase of both and observed below TN likely indicates a mixed, i.e., ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic ground magnetic state of the studied system.

Structural Changes in С36 Laves Phase Intermetallic Compound TiCr2 During Hydrogenation–Dehydrogenation Process

The paper deals with melting of titanium and chromium metal powders in plasma of abnormal glow discharge which results in the formation of the hexagonal С36 Laves phase compound TiCr2 with a = 4.928 A and c = 15.983 A lattice parameters. The hydrogenation–dehydrogenation process is used to prepare the powder of C36 Laves phase intermetallic compound TiCr. The hydrogenation–dehydrogenation process is performed at 100°C, 2 atm hydrogen pressure and 30 min ageing followed by vacuum cooling. The prepared metal powder is characterized by rounded lamellar and coarse particles 6 ± 2 μm and 21 ± 7 μm in size, respectively.

Investigation of the physical properties of two Laves phase compounds HRh2 (H = Ca and La): A DFT study

By using the first-principle calculations, the structural, elastic, electronic and optical properties of Laves phase intermetallic compounds CaRh2 and LaRh2 prototype with MgCu2 are investigated. The evaluated lattice parameters are consistent with the experimental values. The important elastic properties, such as bulk modulus B, shear modulus G, Young’s modulus Y and the Poisson’s ratio v, are computed by applying the Voigt–Reuss–Hill (VRH) approximation. The analysis of Pugh’s ratio exhibits the ductile nature of both the phases. Electronic conductivity is predicted for both the compounds. Most of the contribution comes from Rh-4d states. The study of bonding characteristics reveals the existence of ionic and metallic bonds in both intermetallics. The study of optical properties indicates that CaRh2 is a better dielectric material than LaRh2. Absorption quality of both the phases is good in the ultraviolet region.

High Electron Density on Ru in Intermetallic YRu2: The Application to Catalyst for Ammonia Synthesis

Ruthenium is the most effective catalyst reported to date for ammonia synthesis under mild conditions, especially when an electron promoter is used. However, electron donation from the promoter has not been sufficient because the promoter contacts with Ru only through its surface. Here, we report a Laves phase intermetallic bulk catalyst, YRu2, which has higher electron density on Ru. This is derived from large electron transfer from Y to Ru, which is first confirmed by X-ray absorption fine structure measurements and theoretical calculations. In addition, YRu2 has high hydrogen solubilities leading to suppression of hydrogen poisoning, a common drawback of Ru-based catalysts. Consequently, YRu2 exhibits higher catalytic activity for ammonia synthesis over 300 times that with pure ruthenium. Structural, Electronic and Elastic Properties of Heavy Fermion YbTM2 (TM= Ir and Pt) Laves Phase Compounds

The structural, electronic and elastic properties of YbTM2 (TM = Ir and Pt) Laves phase intermetallic compounds which crystallize in cubic (MgCu2-type) structure, have been investigated using ab-initio full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method with LDA and LDA+U approximation. The calculated ground state properties such as lattice parameter (a0), bulk modulus (B) and its pressure derivative (B′) are in good agreement with available experimental and theoretical data. The electronic properties are analyzed from band structures and density of states. Elastic constants are predicted first time for these compounds which obey the stability criteria for cubic system.

Structure and Phase Transformation in the Giant Magnetostriction Laves-Phase SmFe2.

As one class of the most important intermetallic compounds, the binary Laves-phase is well-known for its abundant magnetic properties. Samarium-iron alloy system SmFe2 is a prototypical Laves compound that shows strong negative magnetostriction but relatively weak magnetocrystalline anisotropy. SmFe2 has been identified as a cubic Fd3̅m structure at room temperature; however, the cubic symmetry, in principle, does not match the spontaneous magnetization along the [111]cubic direction. Here we studied the crystal structure of SmFe2 by high-resolution synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray total scattering, and selected-area electron diffraction methods. SmFe2 is found to adopt a centrosymmetric trigonal R3̅m structure at room temperature, which transforms to an orthorhombic Imma structure at 200 K. This transition is in agreement with the changes of easy magnetization direction from [111]cubic to [110]cubic direction and is further evidenced by the inflection of thermal expansion behavior, the sharp decline of the magnetic susceptibility in the field-cooling-zero field-cooling curve, and the anomaly in the specific heat capacity measurement. The revised structure and phase transformation of SmFe2 could be useful to understand the magnetostriction and related physical properties of other RM2-type pseudocubic Laves-phase intermetallic compounds.

Magnetism of CoCrFeNiZrx eutectic high-entropy alloys

We have investigated the magnetism of CoCrFeNiZrx (x = 0.4–0.5) eutectic high-entropy alloys (HEAs) in relation to their microstructure by XRD, SEM, magnetization, specific heat and electrical resistivity measurements. Two structural phases develop in the CoCrFeNiZrx HEAs, a Zr-free fcc solid solution and a Zr-containing C15 Laves-phase intermetallic compound, where in both phases magnetic transition elements Co, Cr, Fe and Ni substitute each other in a random-like manner. Relative fractions of the two phases change substantially with the Zr concentration. Microstructurally, the two phases form alternatively grown fine lamellar structure typical of eutectic alloys. In addition, bulky dendrites of the fcc solid solution form in large number for the x = 0.40 concentration and in small number for x = 0.45. Two magnetic structures coexist in the CoCrFeNiZrx HEAs. The first is a disordered ferromagnetic (FM) phase that develops in the interior of large dendrites of the fcc solid solution and in some larger lamellas of this phase. The second phase is superparamagnetic-like and originates from the remaining spins of the fcc solid solution fraction, located at the surfaces and in the interfaces, and from all spins of the C15 Laves-phase fraction. The relative magnitude of the disordered FM-state magnetization with respect to the superparamagnetic magnetization in the samples with different Zr concentration is predominantly determined by the volume fraction of the fcc bulky dendrites. There is no one-to-one relation between the two magnetic structures on one side and the two structural components of the CoCrFeNiZrx eutectic mixtures on the other side. The magnetism of multi-phase HEAs containing magnetic elements cannot be described as a compositional average of magnetic properties of the constituent phases.

Hydrogen Sorption Characteristics of ZrCrAl Ternary Alloy as a Function of Milling Time

Intermetallic compounds which absorb large quantities of hydrogen have received considerable attention recently. The AB2 laves phase intermetallic compound is known to be a potential material for hydrogen storage, owing to its large storage capacity, ease of activation and rapid reaction rate with hydrogen. In this work Al has been chosen as a substitute material for Cr and ZrCrAl ternary alloy is prepared using arc furnace. The mechanical alloying process has been introduced to produce nanocrystalline material. This paper presents comprehensive study on structural aspects of ball milled ZrCrAl alloy. On comparison of the XRD data, the broadening was found in the peak width with the increase of milling time which is clear indication of refinement of crystallite size. This refinement could also be confirmed from the SEM analysis also. PCT measurements were performed for a temperature range 303 K–373 K.

First principles study of the structural, elastic, electronic, optical and thermodynamic properties of SrRh2 laves phase intermetallic compound

Structural, elastic, electronic, optical and thermodynamic properties of laves phase intermetallic SrRh2 compound with prototype MgCu2 were investigated by using the first principle calculations. The calculations stand on density functional theory (DFT) from CASTEP code. The calculated lattice parameters are consistent with the experimental values. The significant elastic properties, like as bulk modulus B, shear modulus G, Young's modulus E and the Poisson's ratio v are determined by applying the Voigt-Reuss-Hill (VRH) approximation. The analysis of Cauchy pressure and Pugh's ratio shows the ductile nature of cubic laves phase intermetallic SrRh2 compound. Metallic conductivity is observed for SrRh2 compound. The ionic character of SrRh2 is revealed from SrRh bonds. Most of the contribution originates from Rh-4d states at Fermi level in DOS. The study of bonding properties of this compound exhibits the existence of covalent, ionic and metallic bonds. The maximum reflectivity occurs in low energy region which reveals the characteristics of high conductance. Absorption quality is good in the visible region. The Debye temperature of SrRh2 is 270.85 K which has been evaluated by using the calculated elastic constants. We also predicted the thermal conductivity and melting temperature of this compound.
