"Unidos Hablemos" - description of a virtual conference series to engage the Hispanic and Latino community in asthma and COVID-19 education and research.

Inequity in asthma and COVID-19 outcomes and research among Hispanic or Latino individuals is well established. Patient centered outcomes research (PCOR) may help address these inequalities. This report describes the development, implementation, and evaluation of a virtual conference series program titled "Unidos Hablemos de/United, Let's Talk About" intended to address the health literacy of the Hispanic/Latino community regarding asthma and COVID-19 and to encourage involvement in PCOR. A Project Advisory Group consisting of Hispanic/Latino patient advisors who had been diagnosed with asthma and/or COVID-19, healthcare providers, researchers, a Hispanic faith-based leader, and a program evaluator designed and implemented a six-month series of monthly one-hour virtual sessions. Speakers and topics were selected that fit the Hispanic/Latino community and culture regarding asthma, COVID-19, and PCOR. Recruitment was through a multichannel digital promotion strategy, including social media. The virtual sessions were free on the ZOOM webinar platform and included interactive polling questions, live chat box, and Q&A. All audio and written materials from the sessions were translated into Spanish and English. Evaluations were used to rate the overall satisfaction with the program. An average of 382 participants attended each of the six sessions, and participation generally increased with each session. The proportion of participants who considered themselves a Hispanic/Latino patient with asthma, caregiver, or clergy who served Hispanic/Latino communities increased by 100% from session one to session two. Preference for materials in Spanish ranged from 12 to 20% of participants over the six sessions. Among the sessions, 74-84% of polling question respondents indicated they would be willing to participate in research or a study, and 88% said they would be willing to serve as a patient partner/advocate. Program evaluations consistently indicated high satisfaction with the session content, session format, and feeling of inclusion. Unidos Hablemos provided a voice to the Hispanic/Latino community that will inform future strategies to improve equity in asthma management, COVID-19, and PCOR. Patient speakers generated trust from the participants and "bridged the gap" between physicians, researchers, and the Hispanic/Latino community. Providing evidence-based, current information will empower patients and caregivers to make informed healthcare decisions.

Using systems thinking to leverage adolescent sexual and reproductive health in rural Latino communities

Disparities in adolescent sexual and reproductive health (SRH) outcomes in rural areas of the USA persist as a concern in achieving health equity for youth. A growing body of literature recognises that improving adolescents’ health necessitates systems thinking to address the culture and environment in which adolescents live. This paper uses systems thinking to identify leverage points to improve adolescent SRH in rural Latino communities in California. We conducted focus group discussions with 22 young people and interviewed 10 adult stakeholders to centre the perspectives of youth and youth-serving professionals. Transcripts were coded and analysed using systems thinking. Five themes were developed: (1) community and cultural norms can be a source of both support and stigma for youth; (2) families are key to supporting health education and services; (3) rural schools provide a central hub for programme delivery; (4) community-based organisations can work to serve rural youth, but limited resources and transport are challenges; and (5) youth face considerable barriers accessing SRH services in their communities. Using systems thinking to identify leverage points and gaps in interactions between system components influencing youth can aid in the development of more holistic and culturally responsive approaches for rural youth SRH.

Intersectional stigma among Latino MSM and HIV prevention: barriers to HIV prevention and strategies to overcome the barriers

ABSTRACT Latino men, especially Latino men who have sex with men (LMSM), experience disparities in HIV prevention. Lack of attention to key barriers to care, such as stigma, result in inequitable access to HIV prevention and care for LMSM. This paper describes how intersectional stigma and related factors act as barriers to HIV prevention among Latino men and proposes strategies to overcome these barriers. Qualitative data were collected via in-depth interviews (n = 15) with Latino men about HIV prevention services, mobile outreach, peer navigation and care coordination, and analyzed using rapid qualitative methods. Three key themes emerged: (1) HIV stigma as a barrier to HIV testing, (2) sexual minority stigma as a barrier to accessing HIV prevention services and (3) strategies for stigma reduction, such as confidentiality, comprehensive education about HIV and prevention, and empathy and warmth from staff/care providers. Identified stigmas were intersectional. Addressing and reducing stigma is critical to engaging Latino men in HIV prevention and care, and requires strategies sensitive to the Latino cultural context and community.

Content is Life: The Power of Social Media to Improve Health among Latinos

The Latino communities in the United States have grown substantially, comprising approximately 19% of the total population in 2021. Despite this demographic shift, disparities persist in healthcare access and outcomes within the Hispanic communities, influenced by cultural differences, language barriers, and structural inequalities. The prevalence of type 2 diabetes among Hispanics in the United States is notably significant, with epidemiological studies revealing a higher prevalence compared to non-Hispanic whites. Furthermore, obesity, recognized as a significant epidemic in the United States, poses a considerable risk factor for type 2 diabetes among Hispanics, with a higher prevalence observed compared to non-Hispanic whites. The association among obesity, type 2 diabetes, and various health outcomes underscores the critical role of behavioral interventions in disease prevention.

From the Clinic to the Polls: Why Voting Matters for Latino Medical Professionals

There is a well-established connection between voting and health as referenced by the American Medical Association (American Medical Association n.d.). However, the Latino electorate continues to face suppression, a challenge that also affects Latino medical professionals and students. Latino medical professionals are a critical part of the healthcare delivery system, often serving patients who share their ethnicity (Hutchinson, Davis, & Mulligan, 2010). Latino medical professionals play a crucial role in representing the needs of the Latino community, not only in healthcare delivery but also in shaping policy decisions that impact the health of their communities. In this article, the authors highlight the persistent barriers to voting faced by Latino medical professionals and their impacts on community health. The authors offer tangible solutions, which aim to reduce voting barriers and promote civic health within the Latino medical community, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding policies that provide time off to vote.

Prevalence of Mental health and Receipt of Services in Latino Immigrants Living in Philadelphia

Abstract Background and Purpose Research shows that Latino populations are less likely to seek formal mental health services, these attitudes combined with difficulty finding affordable services impact the ability to receive a mental health diagnosis. This project examines mental health symptoms, utilization of mental health services, and socio-ecological barriers to receive mental health services among Latino immigrants, including region of origin, health insurance, immigration status, and English proficiency. Methods Data was collected between 2021-2022 by Drexel University’s CRISOL lab using a cross-sectional respondent-driven sample survey of Latinos born outside the U.S. mainland and residing in Philadelphia. The final sample included 420 Latino/a/e immigrants. Descriptive statistics and bivariate associations using Chi-square analyses were computed. Outcomes The findings revealed that 29.1% of the surveyed individuals exhibited signs of Depression, 36.1% experienced symptoms of Anxiety, 8.7% showed signs of PTSD, and 43.4% possessed one or more mental health conditions. The findings show that country of origin (p<.01), health insurance (p<.05), immigration status (p<.01), and language proficiency (p<.001) are significantly associated with whether an individual has received mental health services in the past year or in their lifetime. Of the survey population, only 39.5% of individuals with one or more mental issues had received mental health services in their lifetime. Conclusions Interventions to increase access to mental health services for Latino communities are needed. Solutions addressing disparities in access to mental health services must address systemic, cultural, and language barriers. Key messages • Region of origin, health insurance, immigration status, and English proficiency impact the utilization of mental health services. • Immigrant populations face stressors that increase the risk for mental health disease and experience multiple barriers to access mental health services.

Provider reaches Latino community by being ‘culturally humble’

Staff members at North Carolina's largest provider of mental health services for the Latino community, El Futuro, realize the care they deliver can't be cookie‐cutter. What the rest of the field might label as “evidence‐based” will likely fall short for a population that has had little role in designing or testing what have become the conventional treatment strategies.

Questioning the status quo: Latino community members as researchers in the study of health equity.

Latinos experience disproportionate rates of obesity and related conditions like type 2 diabetes, which are projected to increase (Mohebi et al., 2022). Standard interventions for these issues often fall short due to individual-focused approaches and the lack of culturally sensitive definitions of health that include emotional, physical, political, and social domains (Gutierrez Chavez et al., 2022; Ritchie et al., 2020). Multilevel and multidimensional research efforts, integrating social justice-informed orientations, psychotherapy science, and behavioral medicine, are crucial for addressing these health inequities (Asnaani, 2023; Collins et al., 2018; Rodriguez Espinosa & Verney, 2021). Additionally, critically analyzing researcher and participant roles is essential to avoid perpetuating systemic racism (Cook et al., 2023). This article highlights the need for a paradigm shift in psychotherapy research by (a) describing Latino families' eating patterns and coping strategies for emotional distress through focus groups in the community and (b) illustrating the process behind the community-partnered development of a culturally responsive mindfulness-based health intervention. Importantly, this research approach emphasizes liberation psychology theory in the exploration of structural influences affecting health (Martín-Baró, 1996). While mindfulness techniques are feasible in this population (Cotter & Jones, 2020), Latino communities may not be amenable to the current presentation of mainstream psychological science interventions. Our research paradigm informed the conceptualization of mindfulness techniques through both clinical science and critical lenses. Thus, this study argues for reconceptualizing the definition of a successful psychotherapy study to include community engagement and liberatory principles, making the potential for big needle jumps in addressing health inequities incalculable. Community-Engaged Approaches for Improving the Inclusion of Diverse Communities in a Nutrition Clinical Trial.

Cardiometabolic disease (CMD) disproportionately affects African American/Black (AA) and Latino communities. CMD disparities are exacerbated by their underrepresentation in clinical trials for CMD treatments including nutritional interventions. The study aimed to (1) form a precision nutrition community consultant panel (PNCCP) representative of Latino and AA communities in Los Angeles to identify barriers and facilitators to recruitment and retention of diverse communities into nutrition clinical trials and (2) develop culturally informed strategies to improve trial diversity. A deliberative community engagement approach was used to form a PNCCP for the Nutrition for Precision Health (NPH) trial, part of the of the All of Us research initiative. The PNCCP included individuals that provide services for Latino and AA communities who met during 11 virtual sessions over 1 year. Discussion topics included enhancing recruitment and cultural acceptance of the NPH trial. We summarized CCP recommendations by theme using an inductive qualitative approach. The PNCCP included 17 adults (35% AA, 47% Latino). Four thematic recommendations emerged: reducing structural barriers to recruitment, the need for recruitment materials to be culturally tailored and participant-centered, community-engaged trial recruitment, and making nutrition trial procedures inclusive and acceptable. We outlined the study response to feedback, including the constraints that limited implementation of suggestions. This study centers community voices regarding the recruitment and retention of AA and Latino communities into a nutrition clinical trial. It highlights the importance of community engagement early on in protocol development and maintaining flexibility to enhance inclusion of diverse communities in nutrition clinical trials.

Exploring differences in perceived barriers and facilitators to COVID-19 vaccine uptake and testing intention by vaccination status and testing hesitancy among rural Latino communities in Southwest Florida

ABSTRACT Background: Identifying factors impacting vaccination and testing for COVID-19 is crucial to reduce health disparities, especially for rural/agricultural, low access and high poverty Latino communities disproportionately affected by the pandemic. This study examined differences in perceived barriers and facilitators (such as values, beliefs, and concerns) to COVID-19 vaccine uptake and testing intention by vaccination status and testing hesitancy among rural Latino community members in Southwest Florida. Methods: Rural Latino community members (N = 493) completed a cross-sectional survey in Spanish (86.0%) or English (14.0%) on perceived COVID-19 vaccine/testing barriers and facilitators, as well as demographics, mental health, medical history, health perceptions, and health literacy. Results: At the time of the survey, approximately 43% of participants were unvaccinated and 46.4% were testing hesitant. Significantly more vaccinated participants acknowledged keeping their family (d = .25), community (d = .27), and themselves (d = .22) safe as facilitators to vaccination (ps < .001). Among the unvaccinated participants, the most common concerns for getting vaccinated were side effects (d = −.53) and lack of knowledge about how the vaccine works (d = −.35, ps < .001). Testing hesitant participants reported concerns including not knowing where to get tested (d = −.25, p = 0.01) and less confidence in a positive test result (d = −.40, p < 0.001). Doctors and faith leaders were ranked as the most trusted information sources across groups. In logistic regression models, vaccination was linked to age, gender, education, and protecting others, while concerns about needles and side effects reduced odds; testing was driven by education, anxiety, hope, and safety concerns. Conclusion: Promoting family and community safety may be effective facilitators influencing vaccine and testing intention in rural Latino communities. Enhanced education by trusted information sources, such as doctors and faith leaders may alleviate associated concerns. Our findings may inform actions for future pandemics. Further studies should determine the generalizability of our findings across other rural migrant communities and other vaccines.

Assessing changes in COVID-19 vaccine uptake and intentions among the Brigada Digital Latino social media audience: a repeated cross-sectional study

BackgroundU.S. Latinos experienced disproportionate COVID-19 impacts in terms of morbidity and mortality. Vaccination against COVID-19 is an important strategy for mitigating health impacts, and yet, vaccine uptake was slower among U.S. Latino adults compared to other racial/ethnic groups. Vaccine hesitancy has been a significant barrier within Latino communities, and exposure to misinformation has been associated with negative attitudes toward vaccination. While some COVID-19 mitigation efforts have included community-based outreach, few studies have explored the impact of community-based digital messaging in Spanish to counter COVID-19 misinformation, build trust, and promote vaccination. To address this gap, we conducted a one-year repeated cross-sectional study to assess changes in COVID-19 vaccine uptake, intentions, and perceived norms, as well as barriers to accessing reliable information and levels of trust in COVID-19 information sources among Latino adults exposed to Brigada Digital de Salud social media content. This culturally-tailored content disseminated on Facebook, Instagram, and X platforms was amplified by community health workers and partners, and focused on COVID-19 risk and prevention, vaccine safety and efficacy, and correcting related misinformation.ResultsStatistically significant increases in COVID-19 vaccination and intentions to vaccinate children were observed from May 2022 (wave 1) to April 2023 (wave 2). Among perceived difficulties accessing information, respondents indicated the most difficulty in judging the reliability of COVID-19 information in the media; however, a statistically significant decrease in perceived difficulty was observed between waves. With regard to trust in COVID-19 information sources, levels of trust were highest for healthcare providers in both waves, and there were statistically significant increases in trust in the FDA to ensure COVID-19 vaccine safety and trust in the federal government to ensure child COVID-19 vaccine safety at wave 2.ConclusionsSocial media messaging by trusted community-based sources shows promise as a strategy for combating health misinformation and ameliorating information access gaps for language minority populations. This digital approach represents an important tool for deploying critical information to underserved populations in public health emergency and crisis contexts, and for supporting changes in attitudes, trust, and behaviors to improve health outcomes.

El impacto del COVID-19 en la calidad de vida de los latinoamericanos en Nueva Zelanda

Introduction: This research explored how COVID-19 has negatively affected the quality of life for Latin Americans in New Zealand. No study has yet been conducted on this topic. Objective: This is a pilot study that describes the effects of the pandemic on the quality of life of the Latino community in that country. According to the academic literature, the concept of quality of life is broad and encompasses objective and subjective factors. Methodology: This is a qualitative study that used digital ethnography as a methodological approach. In this way, the observation of the participants through Facebook (as digital ethnography) and semi-structured interviews were used as data collection methods. Ten Latin American participants from Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela participated in this study. Participants were recruited through Facebook ads. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the qualitative data produced by this research. Results: The findings of this study show that COVID-19 has not seriously affected the quality of life of the participants. Conclusions: Despite the fact that CVID-19 has somehow impacted the quality of life of Latin Americans in New Zealand, they think that their current quality of life in that country is positive, happy and pleasant.

Protesting in a different way: minority activism from within the urban economy and politics

ABSTRACT In marginalized communities where traditional political channels are often inaccessible, social movements and protests have emerged as vital platforms for voices seeking to challenge established power structures. This study reveals a compelling shift in recent decades as these neighborhoods undergo economic transformation and gentrification. It uncovers a distinct pattern of activism characterized by the emergence of middle-class ethnic entrepreneurs and business owners who engage in activism from within the urban economy and political systems. This qualitative case study, conducted within a Latino community in the U.S. delves into the activism of this actor, providing a deeper understanding of how this pattern, which both challenges and engages with the system, gives rise to local political conflicts and accusations of ‘class betrayal’, and cooptation. By utilizing a ‘place-based’ mobilization model and examining the interplay between ethnic and class affiliations, this study enriches our understanding of political protests and activism in ethnic/racial communities.

Abstract B032: Advancing the science of cancer in Latinos conference

Abstract Cancer is the leading cause of mortality within the Latino population. Projections suggest a 142% increase in cancer incidence among Latinos over the next two decades. This trend is concerning given that Latinos, the largest minority group in the United States, are expected to constitute at least 28% of the nation's populace by 2060. To address the need for enhanced comprehension of these trends and to identify equitable interventions targeting Latino health disparities, the Institute of Health Promotion Research and the Mays Cancer Center jointly established the biennial Advancing the Science of Cancer in Latinos (ASCL) Conference. The fourth ASCL Conference convened in San Antonio, TX from February 21-23, 2024. The conference objectives were twofold: 1) Examine the intersection of health equity and biological underpinnings in cancer control, prevention, and treatment; and 2) Foster collaborative initiatives among attendees aimed at addressing cancer-related health disparities within the Latino community. The 2024 conference attracted 286 participants compared to 251 attendees in 2022, encompassing guest speakers, researchers, physicians, healthcare professionals, patient advocates, researchers, and students. It comprised 23 sessions (3 keynotes, 6 plenaries, 6 breakouts, 3 general sessions, 1 special session, 1 lunch panel session) featuring insights from 51 speakers, alongside a poster session highlighting 80 research abstracts and a rapid-fire session tailored for early-career investigators. Sessions encompassed multiple topics relevant to Latino cancer research, spanning health disparities, clinical trials, survivorship, patient advocacy, climate change impacts on cancer, precision medicine, health policy and social determinants of health. A post-conference survey from a cohort of 48 respondents underscored high levels of satisfaction, with 90% expressing pronounced contentment regarding the conference experience, compared to 85% in 2022. Moreover, nearly all respondents (98%) rated the relevance of conference content to Latino cancer science as excellent, with 93% regarding the conference as an exceptional platform for information exchange, compared to 79% in 2022. Impressions regarding session quality were overwhelmingly positive, with 90% of respondents indicating a high level of satisfaction, and all survey respondents acknowledging the objectivity, balance, and absence of commercial bias in the session content. Our results showed that the resounding positivity in attendee feedback reflects the conference's success in fostering meaningful engagement among researchers committed to alleviating Latino cancer health disparities. The ASCL conference facilitated an understanding of cultural nuances and barriers specific to the Latino community, stimulating collaborative efforts aimed at enhancing Latino health outcomes. Overall, this retrospective analysis affirms the conference's success in achieving its stipulated objectives and underscores the need of having consistently coordinated research endeavors to reduce Latino health disparities. Abstract A150: Improving FIT and colonoscopy animated videos for colorectal cancer screening: An application of learner verification and revision

Abstract Latino adults in the U.S. have low rates of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening. Using at-home fecal immunochemical tests (FIT) can improve screening rates. This study builds upon three-minute instructional animated videos originally created by the Colorectal Cancer Prevention Network that our team previously translated into Spanish. In the current study, we employed a user-centered approach, known as learner verification and revision (LV&amp;R), to elicit patients’ input on the videos. These videos will be used as part of a text-based intervention aimed at increasing FIT use among Latino adults aged 45-54. This study was part of a larger trial, Community Partnership for Telehealth Solutions to Counter Misinformation and Achieve Equity (PRIME), which aims to test an intervention that integrates the videos with social-needs navigation to boost CRC screening within Latino communities. LV&amp;R integrates theories of health communication and qualitative research to tailor interventions to the needs of target populations. To solicit feedback on the two videos (one on FIT, one on colonoscopy), we interviewed 24 patients (46% male) from a large urban community clinic in Los Angeles. Patients were age-eligible for CRC screening, had been mailed a FIT, texted a link to the videos, and spoke English or Spanish (54% preferred Spanish). Interviews asked about acceptability, comprehension, actionability, and cultural relevance of the videos among our target audience. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and summarized using rapid qualitative analysis techniques. Interviews revealed positive perceptions of both videos' accessibility, content, and appeal. Participants appreciated the videos’ straightforward language and clear instructions, which were found to be culturally and linguistically acceptable across English and Spanish-speakers. The videos were viewed as informative and persuasive, motivating participants to consider or complete CRC screening and share videos with others. The videos aided in dispelling misinformation related to screening with FIT and/or colonoscopy, particularly for those who had never screened for CRC. Participants liked the length of the videos along with use of appropriate humor to convey complex steps in the screening process. Participants suggested minor improvements such as adding language related to bowel prep, screening guidelines, communication of results, and reassuring language to help with fears to enhance the videos' effectiveness. Overall, these findings underscore the importance of culturally responsive, informative, and engaging materials in promoting CRC screening awareness and participation. Latino patients reported high acceptability, persuasiveness, helpfulness, and cultural appropriateness of animated videos sent via text to educate patients about FIT and colonoscopy. Suggestions for improvement centered on providing more facts about CRC, emphasizing that both men and women are at risk, adding reassuring language to encourage individuals to overcome any fears, and providing more resources for further information. Abstract B147: Avanzando Equidad de Salud: Latino Cancer Health Equity Research Center

Abstract South Texas (STX), spanning from San Antonio to the Texas-Mexico border, includes 25 rural counties, with 96% designated as primary care shortage areas, are notably the nation’s poorest and most medically underserved regions in the United States. Hispanic/Latinos (H/Ls) in the U.S. face challenges related to social determinants of health (SDoH), contributing to disparities in cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes. H/Ls have higher risks of invasive cancers compared to peers, emphasizing the critical need to address SDoH to mitigate cancer disparities. Addressing these causes can improve access to healthcare, promote early detection, enhance patient education, and provide culturally competent care. The Avanzando Center (AC) aims to reduce health disparities across STX with community-engaged research, training, patient assessment, and advocacy that addresses the SDoH that deter Latinos from equitable access to cancer care, prevention, early detection, treatment, and improve patients’ cancer outcomes. To achieve its mission, the AC will 1) coordinate Research Scholars on SDoH-related cancer control projects, providing leadership, mentoring, and support in SDoH screening, clinical informatics, and outreach dissemination, 2) implement the SDoH Screener to screen patients at UT Health San Antonio’s Mays Cancer Center, Primary Care Center, and clinics across STX, ensuring they receive necessary support, 3) utilize the Salud America! (SA!) Latino health communications network for community education, empowering STX community members to advocate for local system and policy changes addressing structural SDoH, and 4) provide mentoring and career development in health equity (HE) and SDoH fundamentals to enhance cancer patient care and research advancements in the community. Research Scholars are actively employing interventions for 1) adolescent and young adult cancer survivors by establishing training programs for oncology providers to ensure proper guidance on vaccinations against HPV-related cancers, 2) using technology to improve treatment adherence among Latina breast cancer patients, and 3) addressing disparities in colorectal cancer screening and healthcare access among persistently impoverished populations. These studies will result in rigorous evaluation of intervention effectiveness by addressing the specific needs of cancer patients facing barriers related to SDoH and inform policy and practice initiatives to eliminate cancer as a major health concern. In addition, training and mentoring programs will enhance the knowledge and understanding of cancer care and research professionals, while the SA! Latino HE communication program to raise awareness about SDoH and cancer HE that includes blog posts featuring resources, inspirational stories, and promotional HE tools. The efforts focused on SDoH have the potential to significantly impact cancer outcomes and reduce disparities in Latino communities, ultimately advancing HE and improving overall well-being; specifically improving cancer outcomes, survivorship, and quality of life. A nutrition-focused review of the interventions in US-living Latino communities with type II diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a chronic, debilitating disease that disproportionally affects the Hispanic/Latino community residing in the United States. Optimal nutrition therapy is fundamental to the proper management of T2D and must be culturally adapted to facilitate permanent behavior change in this population. This review selected and assessed the nutrition components of interventions aimed to improve T2D outcomes in US-based Latinos/Hispanics, published from 2002 to 2023. An overview of the participant characteristics, nutrition intervention, and dietary assessment and outcomes is included. Nutrition interventions in this community benefit from the inclusion of bicultural registered dietitian nutritionist (RDNs) to assure the counseling team promotes culturally tailored nutrition recommendations based on current dietary guidelines. Nutrition assessment and outcomes should be captured with the use of validated dietary assessment tools and dietary quality indices appropriate to their target population. Standardizing these practices will facilitate intervention comparability and replicability and ultimately better target the needs of this community.

Exploring Latino cultural factors from the perspective of sexual minority men in the USA

Existing research on Latino cultural factors mainly focuses on gender and nationality, often overlooking sexual orientation and giving limited attention to the experiences of Latino sexual minority men in the United States of America (USA). This study addressed this gap by exploring how sexual minority men identify, describe and experience Latino cultural factors. Between April and December 2019, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 28 men (ages 18–40, 43% non-US-born) in the greater Miami, Florida area to explore their engagement in HIV prevention and behavioural health services. Secondary qualitative analysis examined five Latino cultural factors (personalismo, machismo, familismo, fatalismo and curanderismo), informed by the existing literature for initial coding and supplemented by the use of an inductive approach, yielding 14 subthemes. Findings revealed that although participants often described cultural factors in their traditional interpretations within the Latino community at large, they also highlighted unique experiences, particularly for relationship-oriented factors like personalismo, machismo and familismo. Sexual orientation stigma shaped participants’ experiences of these cultural factors. Study findings enhance knowledge about Latino sexual minority men’s lived experiences in the USA, underscoring how cultural factors are perceived both traditionally and uniquely, and emphasises the need for nuanced, culturally tailored assessments in future research.

Co-designing the Family Wellbeing Program to Address Mental Health Disparities in a Latino Community: Lessons Learned

Abstract: Background: Latino caregivers caring for children under 5 years old who are under resourced, and underserved may be most vulnerable for experiencing mental health problems. Furthermore, Latino families with young children—during the COVID-19 pandemic—were at particular risk for multiple and concurrent stressors and acute adversities. Objectives: The Family Wellbeing Program (FWP) was designed to strengthen Latino caregivers’ mental health and mental well-being, and facilitate their access to mental health supports and service providers. Methods: Using the principles of community-based participatory research, a university research team and staff from a federally qualified health care center co-developed and implemented the FWP. Pre- and post-implementation focus groups with six staff were conducted and data analysis was guided by the RE-AIM framework. Results: Staff identified implementation challenges related to the pandemic and socioenvironmental factors affecting the reach and participation of Latino families. Staff perceived the program improved caregivers’ help-seeking behaviors, yet suggestions for improving the FWP for Latino caregivers were noted. Staff also discussed implementation strategies to sustain future programming. Conclusions: Implementation strategies along the RE-AIM dimensions were identified to improve the participation of Latino caregivers in future adaptations of the FWP. The implications of this work could show promise for sustaining programs designed to address disparities in mental health among Latino caregivers.
