Analyzing early childhood allergy prevention motivation of mothers of infants and its predictors using latent class analysis and structural equation modelling

BackgroundAllergic diseases are among the most common chronic diseases in childhood. Early childhood allergy prevention (ECAP) behaviors of those caring for the infant during pregnancy and the first months of life may influence the risk of allergy development over the life course. Motivation and intention to use appropriate primary ECAP measures are thus of critical importance.AimsTo characterize parental ECAP motivation, (a) valid indicators will be developed and (b) typical parental characteristics will be identified. (c) According to socio-cognitive models, the predictive value of parental risk perception, control belief and self-efficacy for parental ECAP motivation shall be determined.MethodA sample of N = 343 (expectant) mothers of infants completed a questionnaire on self-reported ECAP motivation, risk perception, control belief, and self-efficacy. The cross-sectional data were analyzed using latent class analysis and structural equation modelling including nominal regression models.ResultsFour typical maternal response profiles (motivated to a customary degree, 70%; motivated to use primary preventive measures, 17.8%; reluctant towards new prevention measures, 6.4%; highly motivated to apply preventive measures in case of an existing allergy, 5.8%) could be identified for the items on ECAP motivation. After splitting the model variables “risk perception” (allergy vs. allergy-associated general health problems) and “self-efficacy” (trust vs. insecurity) a satisfactory model-fit was achieved (CFI = .939; RMSEA = .064). Particularly, increased “risk perception-allergy” (OR = 1.655) and “self-efficacy-insecurity” (OR = 2.013) as well as lower “risk perception-general health” (OR = 0.555) and “control belief” (OR = 0.217), respectively, are associated with higher ECAP motivation.ConclusionThe use of ECAP-measures by parents to protect their newborns from allergies is important, but there are deficiencies in their implementation. Based on a social cognitive model approach, predictive characteristics could be identified, which are associated with increased motivation to implement ECAP-measures. For public health our findings provide a promising basis for conception of behavioral and environmental ECAP prevention measures and their motivated implementation by parents.

Parent-Child Relationships and Adolescents' Non-Cognitive Skills: Role of Social Anxiety and Number of Friends.

This study aimed to examine the association between parent-child relationships and adolescents' non-cognitive skills, while also investigating the mediating effect of social anxiety and number of friends. A survey was conducted with 773 students, ranging from grade 4 to 9, in five public schools of Guangdong Province of China (49.9% male), with a mean age of 12.20 years old. Latent mediation structural equation modeling was used to analyze the data. The findings revealed that (1) the father-child relationship and mother-child relationship both had a positive influence on grit, innovation, conscientiousness, and hope; (2) social anxiety had a negative effect on adolescent non-cognitive skills including innovation, conscientiousness, and hope; (3) the number of positive friends was found to be positively associated with the development of non-cognitive skills in adolescents, whereas the presence of negative friends correlated negatively with grit but positively with innovation; (4) social anxiety emerged as a significant mediating variable between parent-child relationships and adolescents' non-cognitive skills, including innovation, conscientiousness, and hope; and (5) the mediating effect of the number of positive friends on the relationship between parent-child relationships and grit, innovation, conscientiousness, and hope was also found to be significant. Educational programs and family interventions should take these factors into account, providing a more holistic approach to supporting adolescent growth.

Tests of moderation of the big-fish-little-pond effect across students with and without special educational needs in regular versus special education schools

BackgroundInclusive education has become increasingly popular based on the assumption that it has multiple benefits for students with special educational needs (SEN). However, contradictions remain regarding the widespread nature of these benefits, particularly when it comes to academic motivation. AimsIn this large-scale cross-sectional study, we relied on the Big-Fish-Little-Pond Effect (BFLPE) to assess the links between inclusive education and students’ academic self-concepts and learning interests in the mathematics and verbal domains. SampleThe sample consisted of 21,219 German elementary school children in Grade 4 who were enrolled in three groups: students without SEN attending regular schools (n1 = 19,069), students with SEN attending regular schools (n2 = 933), and students with SEN attending special education schools (n3 = 1214). MethodsDoubly latent multi-group multilevel structural equation models and tests of latent interaction were performed to test the BFLPE. ResultsResults supported the BFLPE for both outcomes and domains. However, no BFLPE was identified for learning interest in the verbal domain among students with SEN attending special education schools, although the size of this effect did not differ significantly from that observed among students without SEN. In regular schools, the BFLPE was almost two times stronger among students with SEN than among their peers without SEN. ConclusionsResults support the generalizability of the BFLPE to students with SEN, while casting doubts on the motivational benefits of inclusive education for these students. Interventions targeted at attenuating the BFLPE should thus be tailored for both regular and special education schools.

Attention control mediates the relationship between mental imagery vividness and emotion regulation

Contradictory findings suggest mental imagery may both exacerbate and protect against negative affect. We aimed to reconcile these contradictory findings by considering individual differences (N=989) in imagery vividness, attention control, resilience, emotion regulation strategy, and negative affect (depressive, anxious, and posttraumatic stress symptomology). We hypothesized that attention control would mediate relationships between imagery vividness and emotion regulation strategy use, and psychopathology symptomology. Results revealed that imagery vividness, as mediated by attention control, predicted greater levels of healthy reappraisal and deleterious rumination. Attention control also mediated negative relationships between imagery vividness and catastrophizing, self-blame, and psychopathology symptomology. An exploratory latent structural equation model revealed that imagery vividness and attention control aggregated positively with reappraisal and resilience scores. The present investigation suggests an adaptive function of imagery vividness via the indirect effects of attention control, facilitating adaptive emotion regulation and limiting maladaptive strategy use, thereby protecting against negative affect.

Academic buoyancy, hope, and behavioral engagement in learning English as a foreign language: A mediation model

With the enhancement of positive psychology movement in educational field, the contributive role of academic buoyancy on academic and well-being outcomes has been validated. However, few studies have been conducted to explore the mediation mechanisms between academic buoyancy and engagement, especially in the field of teaching English as a foreign language (EFL). Inspired by the control-value theory (CVT), this study set out to examine how EFL buoyancy related to behavioral engagement, using a latent structural equation modelling (SEM). Gender, age, and family resources are controlled while validating the hypothesized model of “academic buoyancy—hope—behavioral engagement”. The sample comprised 542 students (47.7% female) in their second year of secondary education who responded to survey items in a cross-sectional design. Our findings reveal that academic buoyancy was positively correlated with hope, and behavioral engagement in the EFL settings. Also, it was found that the emotional experience of hope fully mediated the relationships between academic buoyancy and behavioral engagement. The hypothesized model accounts for 79.0% of the variance in EFL hope and 54.5% of the variance in behavioral engagement. These findings shed light on the influence mechanism of academic buoyancy on behavioral engagement in learning English as a foreign language. Implications, limitations, and directions for future research are discussed.

Critical social media literacy buffers the impact of online racism on internalized racism among racially minoritized emerging adults.

Critical social media literacy-the ability to critically evaluate and interpret racist social media content (critical consumption) and to produce and disseminate antiracist social media content (critical prosumption)-may help counter the negative psychological consequences of online racism, including internalized racism. We examined whether critical social media literacy (critical consumption and prosumption) buffered the association between online racism and internalized racism. We conducted latent moderated structural equation modeling to analyze online convenience data from 338 racially minoritized emerging adults (Mage = 23.28; Asian, n = 96; Black, n = 108; Latine, n = 118). Greater exposure to online racism was associated with significantly higher levels of internalized racism; critical consumption weakened this association, while critical prosumption did not. Results suggested that critical social media literacy, particularly consumption-the intellectual basis and analytical skills to apprehend racist digital content-can be effective in mitigating the internalized racism linked to online racism among racially minoritized emerging adults. Implications include translating these findings into antiracist interventions to counter online racism and its deleterious behavioral health consequences. The Role of Smart Travel Service in Intercity Travel Satisfaction: Does Traveler Heterogeneity Matter?

With the increasing intercity communications and the widespread application of smart travel technologies, it is of great significance to understand the mechanism of how the attributes of smart travel service affect the travel satisfaction among intercity travelers and the potential heterogeneity. This paper establishes a conceptual model with hypotheses from two paths: smart travel service and smart travel experience. Based on the intercity travel survey data of the Guanzhong Plain urban agglomeration in China, a latent class structural equation model is employed to divide the samples into “cold”, “rational”, and “enthusiastic” potential groups based on the use and attitude of smart travel services. From the model estimation results, this study confirms that smart travel service and travel experience satisfaction have significant positive impacts on the overall intercity travel satisfaction of travelers. However, the impact of smart travel satisfaction varies due to group heterogeneity. For the “cold” group, the impact of smart travel service satisfaction on the overall satisfaction of intercity travel is not significant, and smart travel service satisfaction only has a significant impact on the smart travel experience satisfaction of “enthusiastic” travelers. This study puts forward the importance of enhancing the quality of smart travel services and promoting travel experience through smart travel technologies and proposes measures for different groups from the perspective of market segmentation, which provides theoretical and practical value for the promotion of sustainable development of intercity transportation.

Parent-adolescent discrepancies in perceived parental warmth and authoritarian parenting and early adolescents’ depressive symptoms

This study investigated discrepancies in parents’ and early adolescents’ perceptions of parental warmth and authoritarian parenting about early adolescents’ depressive symptoms, including the mediating effect of parent-adolescent communication. The sample comprised of 2,443 Chinese early adolescents (Mage = 12.64 years, SD=0.23 years; 50.6 % boys) and their parents. Data analysis used latent difference score modeling and structural equation modeling. Parents perceived more parental warmth and authoritarian parenting than did adolescents. Perceived discrepancies in parental warmth and authoritarian parenting between parents and adolescents predicted early adolescent depressive symptoms via the mediating role of parent-adolescent communication. The findings provide new perspectives on interventions for adolescent depressive symptoms.

Segmenting the potential users of MaaS by combining latent class cluster analysis and structural equation modeling

To reduce problems caused by the excessive use of private vehicles, transportation planners have been actively looking for sustainable transport related solutions. Mobility as a Service (MaaS) is gaining popularity due to its capability to integrate transport opportunities into one platform. Studies on travelers’ acceptance of MaaS have been conducted, but there remains a gap in understanding heterogeneity regarding intentions of using MaaS particularly concerning attitudinal factors. Based upon the extension of the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology, we plan to reveal travelers’ segmentation by using latent class cluster analysis and to examine path heterogeneities in the identified traveler clusters by applying a structural equation modeling. The results confirm that the traveler clusters consider the importance of the relatives and media's viewpoints toward MaaS, while the car user cluster is more interested in adopting MaaS if the service could promise enough flexibility of traveling in terms of time and destination. The results related to the heterogeneity in transport mode choice are useful for constructing MaaS packages. This study could be advantageous for MaaS operators as it enables them to understand some attitudinal factors influencing willingness to take up MaaS thus realizing suitable, effective promotions.

Nurses' burnout and patient safety culture: The moderating effect of structural empowerment.

To identify correlations among job burnout, structural empowerment, and patient safety culture (PSC), and to explore the potential moderating effect of structural empowerment on the associations between burnout and PSC. The study used a cross-sectional survey design. Convenient sampling was employed. We conducted an anonymous online survey in January 2024 among nurses employed at hospitals in three regions of China. Job burnout, structural empowerment, and perceptions of PSC were assessed. A total of 1026 useable surveys were included in the analyses. Descriptive statistics were performed using SPSS software. A latent structural equation modeling approach using Mplus software was used to analyze the moderating effect. The proposed hypothetical model was supported. Job burnout had a strong direct negative effect on structural empowerment and PSC. Structural empowerment had a significant moderating effect on the relationship between job burnout and PSC. The empirically validated moderation model and study results suggest that managers of healthcare organisations can improve patient safety and care quality by fostering empowerment and providing sufficient support to clinical nurses. The findings of this study suggest that providing more support, resources, and information is likely to be effective in weakening the detrimental impact of job burnout on PSC. This study provides insights into the possible approaches that may improve patient safety. To control the impact of nurses' burnout on care quality, nurse managers should increase empowerment as well as staff nurse engagement. We have adhered to relevant EQUATOR guidelines and conducted an observational study, following the STROBE checklist. During the data collection phase of this study, clinical caregivers participated in completing the online survey.

Self-disgust mediates the effect of problematic mobile social media use on non-suicidal self-injury in adolescents: A latent growth curve analysis.

Previous research linked problematic mobile social media use to non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). However, little research explored the underlying mechanism. Drawing on the social displacement hypothesis, which suggests that excessive social media use may disrupt offline social interactions, leading to negative emotional experiences, the study employs a longitudinal design to explore the relationship between problematic mobile social media use and NSSI, with a specific emphasis on the mediating role of self-disgust. A total of 1,684 Chinese adolescents (52.3% females; Mage = 14.59 years, SDage = 1.27) completed self-report questionnaires regarding problematic mobile social media use, self-disgust, and NSSI. The assessment was conducted in three waves, 6 months apart. Using latent growth curve and structural equation modeling, our study observed a consistent linear decline in NSSI levels over time. Higher initial NSSI levels correlated with a slower reduction. Problematic mobile social media use positively influenced the initial level of NSSI. Additionally, self-disgust played a mediating role in the relationship between problematic mobile social media use and NSSI. The study underscores the importance of understanding the emotional experiences behind social media use, beyond mere usage duration. By revealing the mediating role of self-disgust, it provides new insights into the complex interplay between problematic mobile social media use and adolescent NSSI.

Association between negative life events and suicidal behavior in adolescents: roles of core self-evaluation, depression and gender.

Negative life events are essential proximal factors that may induce suicidal behavior in adolescents, but the mechanisms connecting this link remain to further explored. The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between negative life events (NLEs) and adolescents' suicidal behavior, and the roles of core self-evaluation, depression and gender playing between them. Using the whole-group sampling approach, 5296 Chinese adolescents (51.5% males, Meanage = 12.93) took part in this cross-sectional study in September 2021 and completed a battery of surveys including NLEs, suicidal behavior, CSE (core self-evaluation) and depression. Logistic regression and latent structural equation models were used to test the direct and indirect effects between NLEs and suicide behavior with multi-group path analysis, gender differences in this serial mediating effect were also tested. After controlling for age and gender, NLEs were directly associated with adolescents' suicidal behavior. CSE and depression played significant serial mediating effects in this relationship. Moreover, significant gender differences were obtained in these serial mediating pathways, with stronger effects in girls. Integrating the environmental, individual cognitive and emotional factors, our findings would be helpful in understanding the mechanism of these antecedents on adolescents' suicide behavior, which has specific practical significance for preventing and reducing suicidal behavior.

Autonomy-supportive parenting as a moderator of associations between ethnic and racial identity processes and psychological adjustment during college.

The purpose of this study was to test the roles of ethnic and racial identity (ERI) processes and autonomy-supportive parenting on college students' psychological adjustment. American college students of color (N = 505) completed questionnaires assessing ERI exploration and commitment, autonomy-supportive parenting, and psychological adjustment (self-esteem, depressive symptoms). Key variables were operationalized as latent constructs, and main and interaction effects were tested using the latent moderated structural equation modeling approach. Higher levels of ERI commitment (but not exploration) and parental autonomy support each uniquely predicted higher levels of self-esteem and lower levels of depressive symptoms. Parental autonomy support moderated associations between ERI processes and psychological adjustment, and the nature of moderation did not differ across Black and Latino/a/x students. Supporting the psychological adjustment of college students of color necessitates acknowledging the importance of both parental and institutional efforts to encourage students' autonomy strivings and ERI processes. Are there possible issues that we overlook when selecting green infrastructure?

Promoting green infrastructure (GN) as a tool for reducing natural disaster risk is promising, particularly in depopulated areas worldwide. Images of GN as being multifunctional and environment friendly seem to enhance citizens’ positive attitudes toward it. While conventional types of disaster prevention infrastructure, such as concrete levees, can completely prevent damage, GN can relieve the effects of natural hazards. By switching from conventional infrastructure to GN, societies could reduce the costs of disaster prevention infrastructure. However, the risk of disaster damage may increase in some areas. This study aimed to better understand citizens’ preference for GN. It was hypothesized that those who prefer GN are those who do not take the initiative to learn about it and that some citizens are not fully aware of the heterogeneous risks when selecting GN. To test the hypotheses, structural and measurement models, including latent variables, were developed, and structural equation modeling was performed. Data for constructing the measurement and structural equations were obtained using a web questionnaire administered by a professional research company in 2022 with 1,200 participants across Japan. Data from the portal site for the official statistics of Japan (e-Stat) were also used. The results confirm the hypothesis that individuals who favor GN are those who do not proactively seek to acquire knowledge concerning it. The findings highlight the importance of considering, in future policymaking, the possibility that citizens who prefer GN without knowledge about it may face high risks as a result of its uninformed adoption and use.

Principal Support for Teacher Vitality: An Empirical Analysis in Low-Performing Schools

This article draws on a teacher survey (n = 789) to examine the relationship between teacher vitality and two conversational approaches—transformative leadership conversation and controlling conversation. The analyses use latent structural equation modelling. The sample is restricted to teachers in schools with an accountability rating of “low performing” so that principal/teacher conversations can be examined in schools that potentially have the most to gain from strong teacher vitality. Results indicate that the use of transformative leadership conversation had a direct positive relationship with teacher vitality (β = .26) and an indirect relationship (β = .22) with it through teacher need satisfaction. Controlling conversation had a negative relationship with teacher vitality, but it did not have a statistically significant relationship with need satisfaction.

Does Trait Rumination Moderate the Path From Chronic Stress Adversity Exposure to Internalizing Symptoms in First-Generation and Continuing-Generation College Students?

ABSTRACT First-generation college students face greater life adversity and demonstrate higher internalized distress versus their continuing-generation peers. In 598 undergraduate students, this study tests: links between life adversity and internalized distress, moderation by trait rumination, and whether effects differ for first-generation versus continuing-generation students. Four of six latent moderated structural equation models supported the hypothesis that trait rumination (the tendency to engage in negative, self-focused thought) moderates the effects of family and financial chronic stress to predict depression and anxiety. Effects were similar in first-generation and continuing-generation students. Implications include offering trait rumination interventions especially to those with high chronic stress.

Pathways to prevent e-cigarette use: Examining the effectiveness of the truth antivaping campaign.

Mass media campaigns have been designed to counter a rise in e-cigarette use among young people. No studies to date have established pathways from campaign exposure to e-cigarette use behaviors. This study examines the mechanisms through which exposure to the truth® campaign may prevent the progression of e-cigarette use among youth and young adults. Data included four waves of the truth longitudinal cohort, a probability-based, nationally representative survey: Wave 1: September 2020-March 2021; Wave 2: July-October 2021; Wave 3: January-May 2022; and Wave 4: October 2022-January 2023. The sample (N = 4,744) was aged 15-24 years and nicotine naive at Wave 1. Latent growth structural equation modeling techniques examined the pathway from cumulative frequency of ad exposure (CFE) to the e-cigarette use progression via campaign-targeted attitudes. The direct effect from CFE to e-cigarette use progression was not significant. The overall indirect pathway shows that CFE was significantly associated with lower progression of e-cigarette use (β = -.01, p < .0001). CFE had a significant positive association with each campaign-targeted attitude, and each attitude was significantly associated with stronger perceived norms against e-cigarette use. Stronger perceived norms were significantly associated with a slower progression to e-cigarette use (β = -.21, p < .0001). Awareness of the truth antivaping campaign follows a pathway of targeted attitudes and perceptions of acceptability, then to slowed progression toward initiation of e-cigarette use. Antivaping campaigns should focus on shifting perceptions of acceptability to reduce e-cigarette use among young people. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved).

Acceptance of smart sensing, its determinants, and the efficacy of an acceptance-facilitating intervention in people with diabetes: results from a randomized controlled trial.

Mental health problems are prevalent among people with diabetes, yet often under-diagnosed. Smart sensing, utilizing passively collected digital markers through digital devices, is an innovative diagnostic approach that can support mental health screening and intervention. However, the acceptance of this technology remains unclear. Grounded on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), this study aimed to investigate (1) the acceptance of smart sensing in a diabetes sample, (2) the determinants of acceptance, and (3) the effectiveness of an acceptance facilitating intervention (AFI). A total of N = 132 participants with diabetes were randomized to an intervention group (IG) or a control group (CG). The IG received a video-based AFI on smart sensing and the CG received an educational video on mindfulness. Acceptance and its potential determinants were assessed through an online questionnaire as a single post-measurement. The self-reported behavioral intention, interest in using a smart sensing application and installation of a smart sensing application were assessed as outcomes. The data were analyzed using latent structural equation modeling and t-tests. The acceptance of smart sensing at baseline was average (M = 12.64, SD = 4.24) with 27.8% showing low, 40.3% moderate, and 31.9% high acceptance. Performance expectancy (γ = 0.64, p < 0.001), social influence (γ = 0.23, p = .032) and trust (γ = 0.27, p = .040) were identified as potential determinants of acceptance, explaining 84% of the variance. SEM model fit was acceptable (RMSEA = 0.073, SRMR = 0.059). The intervention did not significantly impact acceptance (γ = 0.25, 95%-CI: -0.16-0.65, p = .233), interest (OR = 0.76, 95% CI: 0.38-1.52, p = .445) or app installation rates (OR = 1.13, 95% CI: 0.47-2.73, p = .777). The high variance in acceptance supports a need for acceptance facilitating procedures. The analyzed model supported performance expectancy, social influence, and trust as potential determinants of smart sensing acceptance; perceived benefit was the most influential factor towards acceptance. The AFI was not significant. Future research should further explore factors contributing to smart sensing acceptance and address implementation barriers.

Short and long(er)-term returns of self-efficacy’s latent growth: class attendance and longitudinal impact on knowledge, proximal and distal interest

The broad relationship between students’ self-efficacy and interest has been highlighted for decades. This, along with the inherently developmental nature of learning, calls for a more thorough examination of the way fluctuations in students’ self-efficacy influence their interest in learning within a single course over an academic year and beyond. The present study investigated how the latent growth of students’ self-efficacy beliefs over time influenced their interest in a particular subject area, both short-term (3 weeks) and long-term (47 weeks). Data were collected at eight intervals: four times for self-efficacy within one academic year and three times for domain interest during the following academic year, primarily through weekly e-learning activities at a Japanese university. Attendance over three academic semesters, standardised achievement over one academic year (with prior knowledge control), and domain interest were modelled as outcomes in a latent structural equation model that encompassed a latent curve for self-efficacy beliefs throughout the course of study. The distinct contributions of both the baseline and the growth rate of self-efficacy beliefs to the variance in students’ domain interest over the short and longer term were confirmed by the study. Over the course of two academic years, it was found that the growth rate of self-efficacy, relative to its baseline, became increasingly more important for key learning outcomes such as students’ domain interest.

The impact of leader humor on employee job crafting: a self-determination perspective

PurposeThe purpose of the research is to examine the impact of leader humor on employee job crafting. Using the insights from self-determination theory (SDT), we investigate the underlying mechanism of employees’ flow at work and the moderating role of employees’ playfulness trait.Design/methodology/approachWe adopted a three-wave field survey of 306 employees recruited from various industries. The moderated mediation model was examined using latent structural equation model analysis.FindingsResults revealed that leader humor positively affected employees’ flow at work and subsequent job crafting. Moreover, both the direct effect of leader humor on employees’ flow at work and the indirect effect of leader humor on employees’ job crafting via flow at work were amplified by employees’ playfulness trait.Practical implicationsLeaders are encouraged to use jokes and humorous language to facilitate job crafting among playful subordinates. Organizations can create a work environment conducive to flow at work through job redesign, regardless of employees’ levels of playfulness trait.Originality/valueThe paper uncovers the critical role of flow in the relationship between leader humor and employee job crafting and identifies employees’ playfulness trait as a boundary condition in which leader humor works.
