Fundamental Limits on Earth-like Exoplanet Imaging with Large Telescopes Employing Laser Tomographic Adaptive Optics Systems: A Comparative Analysis of LGS AO and LTAO Systems

Exoplanet imaging with high-contrast imaging adaptive optics systems, though challenging, is a promising path toward the characterization of terrestrial planets. We analyzed the fundamental limitations associated with the direct imaging of terrestrial exoplanets around low-mass stars with Extremely Large Telescopes using laser tomographic adaptive optics (LTAO) and derived the post-coronagraph image shape in the focal plane from LTAO systems. Additionally, the fundamental limitation of direct imaging was found to come from unseen spatial frequencies during tomographic reconstruction. Through the provision of optimization strategies for laser guide star (LGS) asterisms, based on the post-coronagraph image contrast, we aimed to assist in the design of LTAO systems for Extremely Large Telescopes, resulting in a six-fold improvement in the LTAO post-coronagraph image plane at 0.1 arcseconds.

Optique adaptative : correction des effets de la turbulence atmosphérique sur les images astronomiques

Today, adaptive optics (AO) is installed on all very large astronomical telescopes. It allows to overcome the limitation in angular resolution imposed on large ground-based telescopes by the atmospheric turbulence perturbations. This review paper presents the state of the art of the field for astronomical applications. It gives the principles of AO and describes its main components which are the deformable mirrors, the wavefront sensors and the control algorithms. The paper also presents the main recent achievements and ongoing projects. First, for the direct imaging of extra-solar planets by extreme AO and coronography, taking as example the SPHERE instrument. Then to solve the problem of the very limited sky coverage by using laser guide star and to extend the AO correction beyond the isoplanatic patch. Thus, the various laser-assisted tomographic AO concepts are presented with examples of each realization as for the laser tomography AO, the multi-conjugate AO and the multi-object AO. Finally, the challenges of the new generation of giant telescopes are discussed at the end of the paper with a particular focus on the European Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) project.

Sky coverage assessment for the European ELT: a joint evaluation for MAORY/MICADO and HARMONI

The instruments developed for the upcoming Extremely Large Telescopes (ELTs) will need efficient adaptive optics (AO) systems to correct the effects of the atmospheric turbulence and allow imaging at the highest angular resolution. One of the most important requirements for ELT AO-assisted instruments will be to deliver diffraction-limited images in a significant part of the sky. For that, the instruments will be equipped with laser guide stars (LGSs) providing most of the information required by AO instruments. But even with LGSs, AO systems still require the use of natural guide stars (NGSs) to compensate for image motion (jitter) and some low order aberrations. These NGSs are eventually limiting the fraction of the sky that can be achieved by AO systems, the so-called sky coverage (SC). We first present the SC assessment methods used for high angular resolution monolithic optical and near-infrared integral field spectrograph (HARMONI) and multiconjugate adaptive optics relay/multi-AO imaging camera for deep observations (MAORY/MICADO), that are both instruments for the ELT of the European Southern Observatory (ESO). They are based on a semianalytical description of the main contributors in the AO error budget, allowing for a fast estimation of the residual jitter. As such, these methods are well suited for statistical estimation of the SC on multiple science fields and/or to efficiently explore the system parameter space. We then compute the SC of the two instruments in cosmological fields from the cosmic assembly near-IR deep extragalactic legacy survey catalog. The goal is to provide an insight on the possibilities given by two different types of tomographic AO systems, i.e., laser tomography AO with HARMONI and multiconjugate AO with MAORY, on the same telescope. In particular, we show that HARMONI and MAORY/MICADO are complementary, meaning that the overall SC of ESO’s ELT is much improved for applications common to both systems.

Projected Pupil Plane Pattern (PPPP) with artificial Neural Networks

Focus anisoplanatism is a significant measurement error when using one single laser guide star (LGS) in an Adaptive Optics (AO) system, especially for the next generation of extremely large telescopes. An alternative LGS configuration, called Projected Pupil Plane Pattern (PPPP) solves this problem by launching a collimated laser beam across the full pupil of the telescope. If using a linear, modal reconstructor, the high laser power requirement ($\sim1000\,\mbox{W}$) renders PPPP uncompetitive with Laser Tomography AO. This work discusses easing the laser power requirements by using an artificial Neural Network (NN) as a non-linear reconstructor. We find that the non-linear NN reduces the required measurement signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) significantly to reduce PPPP laser power requirements to $\sim200\,\mbox{W}$ for useful residual wavefront error (WFE). At this power level, the WFE becomes 160\,nm root mean square (RMS) and 125\,nm RMS when $r_0=0.098$\,m and $0.171$\,m respectively for turbulence profiles which are representative of conditions at the ESO Paranal observatory. In addition, it is shown that as a non-linear reconstructor, a NN can perform useful wavefront sensing using a beam-profile from one height as the input instead of the two profiles required as a minimum by the linear reconstructor.

A many-core CPU prototype of an MCAO and LTAO RTC for ELT-scale instruments

We propose a many-core CPU architecture for Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) scale adaptive optics (AO) real-time control (RTC) for the multi-conjugate AO (MCAO) and laser-tomographic AO (LTAO) modes. MCAO and LTAO differ from the more conventional single-conjugate (SCAO) mode by requiring more wavefront sensor (WFS) measurements and more deformable mirrors to achieve a wider field of correction, further increasing the computational requirements of ELT-scale AO. We demonstrate results of our CPU based AO RTC operating firstly in SCAO mode, using either Shack-Hartmann or Pyramid style WFS processing, and then in MCAO mode and in LTAO mode using the specifications of the proposed ELT instruments, MAORY and HARMONI. All results are gathered using a CPU based camera simulator utilising UDP packets to better demonstrate the pixel streaming and pipe-lining of the RTC software. We demonstrate the effects of switching parameters, streaming telemetry and implicit pseudo open-loop control (POLC) computation on the MCAO and LTAO modes. We achieve results of < 600$\mu$s latency with an ELT scale SCAO setup using Shack-Hartman processing and < 800$\mu$s latency with SCAO Pyramid WFS processing. We show that our MCAO and LTAO many core CPU architecture can achieve full system latencies of < 1000$\mu$s with jitters < 40$\mu$s RMS. We find that a CPU based AO RTC architecture has a good combination of performance, flexibility and maintainability for ELT-scale AO systems.

Extension of the matched-filter algorithm to multiple guide star Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor.

The adaptive optics (AO) systems with multiple laser guide stars (LGSs) may significantly benefit in terms of hardware simplification from merging several LGS optical channels into one with a single wavefront sensor. As Shack-Hartmann sensors typically suffer from incomplete filling of the camera area, there exists an opportunity to overlay several Hartmann spot patterns densely within a compact composite one, resulting in very frugal use of the camera pixels. We show that such a pattern with only slight spot overlap can be composed even in the quite extreme case of the Giant Magellan Telescope laser tomography AO system employing six highly elongated side-launched laser beacons. The problem of disentangling the overlapped spots is efficiently solvable by a generalization of the matched-filter (MF) algorithm, which is the main focus of this work. Dynamic calibration by star dithering in the case of extended MF is still possible, albeit more complicated. Computational complexity increase and performance degradation in comparison to classical MF can be minimized to acceptable values by careful system parameter tuning.

Multiconjugate adaptive optics simulator for the Thirty Meter Telescope: design, implementation, and results

We present a multiconjugate adaptive optics (MCAO) system simulator bench, Herzberg NFIRAOS Optical Simulator (HeNOS). HeNOS is developed to validate the performance of the MCAO system for the Thirty Meter Telescope, as well as to demonstrate techniques critical for future AO developments. We focus on describing the derivations of parameters that scale the 30-m telescope AO system down to a bench experiment and explain how these parameters are practically implemented on an optical bench. While referring to other papers for details of AO technique developments using HeNOS, we introduce the functionality of HeNOS, in particular, three different single-conjugate AO modes that HeNOS currently offers: a laser guide star AO with a Shack–Hartmann wavefront sensor, a natural guide star AO with a pyramid wavefront sensor, and a laser guide star AO with a sodium spot elongation on the Shack–Hartmann corrected by a truth wavefront sensing on a natural guide star. Laser tomography AO and ultimate MCAO are being prepared to be implemented in the near future.

Fast iterative tomographic wavefront estimation with recursive Toeplitz reconstructor structure for large-scale systems.

Tomographic wavefront reconstruction is the main computational bottleneck to realize real-time correction for turbulence-induced wavefront aberrations in future laser-assisted tomographic adaptive-optics (AO) systems for ground-based giant segmented mirror telescopes because of its unprecedented number of degrees of freedom, N, i.e., the number of measurements from wavefront sensors. In this paper, we provide an efficient implementation of the minimum-mean-square error (MMSE) tomographic wavefront reconstruction, which is mainly useful for some classes of AO systems not requiring multi-conjugation, such as laser-tomographic AO, multi-object AO, and ground-layer AO systems, but is also applicable to multi-conjugate AO systems. This work expands that by Conan [Proc. SPIE9148, 91480R (2014)PSISDG0277-786X10.1117/12.2054472] to the multi-wavefront tomographic case using natural and laser guide stars. The new implementation exploits the Toeplitz structure of covariance matrices used in an MMSE reconstructor, which leads to an overall O(N log N) real-time complexity compared with O(N2) of the original implementation using straight vector-matrix multiplication. We show that the Toeplitz-based algorithm leads to 60nm rms wavefront error improvement for the European Extremely Large Telescope laser-tomography AO system over a well-known sparse-based tomographic reconstruction; however, the number of iterations required for suitable performance is still beyond what a real-time system can accommodate to keep up with the time-varying turbulence.

Simulating the detection and classification of high-redshift supernovae with HARMONI on the ELT

We present detailed simulations of integral field spectroscopic observations of a supernova in a host galaxy at z ∼ 3, as observed by the HARMONI spectrograph on the Extremely Large Telescope, asssisted by laser tomographic adaptive optics. The goal of the simulations, using the HSIM simulation tool, is to determine whether HARMONI can discern the supernova Type from spectral features in the supernova spectrum. We find that in a 3 hour observation, covering the near-infrared H and K bands, at a spectral resolving power of ∼3000, and using the 20×20 mas spaxel scale, we can classify supernova Type Ia and their redshift robustly up to 80 days past maximum light (20 days in the supernova rest frame). We show that HARMONI will provide spectra at z ∼ 3 that are of comparable (or better) quality to the best spectra we can currently obtain at z ∼ 1, thus allowing studies of cosmic expansion rates to be pushed to substantially higher redshifts.

Validation through simulations of a $C_n^2$ profiler for the ESO/VLT Adaptive Optics Facility

The Adaptive Optics Facility (AOF) project envisages transforming one of the VLT units into an adaptive telescope and providing its ESO (European Southern Observatory) second generation instruments with turbulence-corrected wavefronts. For MUSE and HAWK-I this correction will be achieved through the GALACSI and GRAAL AO modules working in conjunction with a 1170 actuators deformable secondary mirror (DSM) and the new Laser Guide Star Facility (4LGSF). Multiple wavefront sensors will enable GLAO (ground layer adaptive optics) and LTAO (laser tomography adaptive optics) capabilities, whose performance can greatly benefit from a knowledge about the stratification of the turbulence in the atmosphere. This work, totally based on end-to-end simulations, describes the validation tests conducted on a |$C_n^2$| profiler adapted for the AOF specifications. Because an absolute profile calibration is strongly dependent on a reliable knowledge of turbulence parameters r0 and L0, the tests presented here refer only to normalized output profiles. Uncertainties in the input parameters inherent to the code are tested as well as the profiler response to different turbulence distributions. It adopts a correction for the unseen turbulence, critical for the GRAAL mode, and highlights the effects of masking out parts of the corrected wavefront on the results. Simulations of data with typical turbulence profiles from Paranal were input to the profiler, showing that it is possible to identify reliably the input features for all the AOF modes.

Laser tomography adaptive optics: a performance study

We present an analytical derivation of the on-axis performance of adaptive optics systems using a given number of guide stars of arbitrary altitude, distributed at arbitrary angular positions in the sky. The expressions of the residual error are given for cases of both continuous and discrete turbulent atmospheric profiles. Assuming Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensing with circular apertures, we demonstrate that the error is formally described by integrals of products of three Bessel functions. We compare the performance of adaptive optics correction when using natural, sodium, or Rayleigh laser guide stars. For small diameter class telescopes (≲5 m), we show that a small number of Rayleigh beacons can provide similar performance to that of a single sodium laser, for a lower overall cost of the instrument. For bigger apertures, using Rayleigh stars may not be such a suitable alternative because of the too severe cone effect that drastically degrades the quality of the correction.

Monte Carlo simulation of ELT-scale multi-object adaptive optics deformable mirror requirements and tolerances

Multi-object adaptive optics (MOAO) has been demonstrated by the CANARY instrument on the William Herschel Telescope. However, for proposed MOAO systems on the next generation Extremely Large Telescopes, such as EAGLE, many challenges remain. Here we investigate requirements that MOAO operation places on deformable mirrors (DMs) using a full end-to-end Monte-Carlo AO simulation code. By taking into consideration a prior global ground-layer (GL) correction, we show that actuator density for the MOAO DMs can be reduced with little performance loss. We note that this reduction is only possible with the addition of a GL DM, whose order is greater than or equal to that of the original MOAO mirrors. The addition of a GL DM of lesser order does not affect system performance (if tip/tilt star sharpening is ignored). We also quantify the maximum mechanical DM stroke requirements (3.5 $\mu$m desired) and provide tolerances for the DM alignment accuracy, both lateral (to within an eighth of a sub-aperture) and rotational (to within 0.2$^\circ$). By presenting results over a range of laser guide star asterism diameters, we ensure that these results are equally applicable for laser tomographic AO systems. We provide the opportunity for significant cost savings to be made in the implementation of MOAO systems, resulting from the lower requirement for DM actuator density.

Optimal noise-weighted reconstruction with elongated Shack–Hartmann wavefront sensor images for laser tomography adaptive optics

The subaperture images in Shack–Hartmann wavefront sensors are elongated when using sodium laser guide stars, due to the parallax effect and the nonzero thickness of the sodium layer. This elongation increases the measurement error in each subaperture and introduces a correlation between the measurements in the orthogonal x and y pixel axes. We show, via end-to-end numerical simulations, that including these errors in a matrix-vector-multiply maximum a posteriori reconstructor significantly improves the expected performance of a laser tomography adaptive optics system for the 42 m diameter European Extremely Large Telescope. In particular, including this noise-weighted reconstruction shows the detected photon requirement is similar for both central and side launch of the sodium lasers.

Integrated Laboratory Demonstrations of Multi-Object Adaptive Optics on a Simulated 10 Meter Telescope at Visible Wavelengths

ABSTRACTOne important frontier for astronomical adaptive optics (AO) involves methods such as multi-object AO and multi-conjugate AO that have the potential to give a significantly larger field of view than conventional AO techniques. A second key emphasis over the next decade will be to push astronomical AO to visible wavelengths. We have conducted the first laboratory simulations of wide-field, laser guide star AO at visible wavelengths on a 10 m class telescope. These experiments, utilizing the UCO/Lick Observatory’s multi-object/laser tomographic adaptive optics (MOAO/LTAO) test bed, demonstrate new techniques in wave front sensing and control that are crucial to future on-sky MOAO systems. We (1) test and confirm the feasibility of highly accurate atmospheric tomography with laser guide stars, (2) demonstrate key innovations allowing open-loop operation of Shack–Hartmann wave front sensors (with errors of ∼30 nm) as will be needed for MOAO, and (3) build a complete error budget model describing system performance. The AO system maintains a performance of 32.4% Strehl ratio on-axis, with 24.5% and 22.6% at 10″ and 15″, respectively, at a science wavelength of 710 nm (R-band) over the equivalent of 0.8 s of simulation. The mean ensquared energy on-axis in a 50 mas spaxel is 46%. The off-axis Strehl ratios are obtained at radial separations 2–3 times the isoplanatic angle of the atmosphere at 710 nm. The MOAO-corrected field of view is ∼25 times larger in area than that limited by anisoplanatism at R-band. The error budget we assemble is composed almost entirely of terms verified through independent, empirical experiments, with minimal parameterization of theoretical models. We find that error terms arising from calibration inaccuracies and optical drift are comparable in magnitude to traditional terms like fitting error and tomographic error. This makes a strong case for implementing additional calibration facilities in future AO systems, including accelerometers on powered optics, three-dimensional turbulators, telescopes, and laser guide star simulators, and external calibration ports for deformable mirrors. These laboratory demonstrations add strong credibility to the implementation of on-sky demonstrators of laser tomographic adaptive optics (LTAO) on 5–10 m telescopes in the coming years.

Wide field adaptive optics laboratory demonstration with closed-loop tomographic control

HOMER, the new bench developed at ONERA devoted to wide field adaptive optics (WFAO) laboratory research, has allowed the first experimental validations of multi-conjugate adaptive optics (MCAO) and laser tomography adaptive optics (LTAO) concepts with a linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) control approach. Results obtained in LTAO in closed loop show the significant gain in performance brought by LQG control, which allows tomographic reconstruction. We present a calibration and model identification strategy. Experimental results are shown to be consistent with end-to-end simulations. These results are very encouraging and demonstrate robustness of performance with respect to inevitable experimental uncertainties. They represent a first step for the study of very large telescope (VLT) and extremely large telescopes (ELT) instruments.

Extreme adaptive optics in the mid-IR: The METIS AO system

METIS, the Mid-infrared ELT Imager and Spectrograph, is currently in its phase A study as one of the candidate first-light instruments for the European Extremely Large Telescope. METIS will feature several observational modes, ranging from diffraction limited imaging in L, M and N-bands to high-resolution Integral Field spectroscopy for the L and M-bands. METIS in its current design gives sensitivities similar to Spitzer in imaging and low-resolution spectroscopy and with its high-resolution spectrograph will provide unprecedented line sensitivity. The design of METIS is optimized for both galactic science cases (e.g. conditions in the early solar system, formation and evolution of proto-planetary disks and properties of exoplanets) and extragalactic science cases (e.g. the growth of Supermassive Black Holes). METIS will require a high-order adaptive optics (AO) system to meet its scientific goals, both to provide correction for atmospheric turbulence as well as reduce the impact of wind shake, leading to a residual image motion of 3 - 5 mas rms. METIS is expected to feature both an internal Single Conjugate AO system as well as an external Laser Tomography AO system. The challenges for the METIS AO system are mainly in the broad correction range, an excellent image stability required for coronagraphy and in providing a high sky coverage to be available for as many science targets as possible. An additional challenge for METIS is the need to compensate for composition turbulence, mainly in the form of fast fluctuations in water vapor concentration. Water vapor fluctuations impact the performance of METIS in several ways: Atmospheric dispersion causes a broadening of the point-spread function, both in the science channel and the wavefront channel, but can be corrected using a Atmospheric Dispersion Corrector. Variations in the water vapor composition cannot be corrected this way and are currently estimated to give a residual image motion of ≤10 mas rms. This effect can, especially for coronagraphy, not be neglected. Chromatic optical path difference errors, caused by changes in the index of refraction along the path through the atmosphere were found to be negligible in the case of METIS due to attenuation by the outer scale (at typical values of 25 m). Chromatic anisoplanatism is the effect that the light at different wavelengths travels through a slightly different light path through the atmosphere and can be–at least partly–corrected. The last effect is composition turbulence, mainly caused by fast (&gt; 1 Hz) fluctuations in the water vapor content. Based on data for ALMA and radiometer probes, this leads to a maximum loss in Strehl ratio between 5 and 10%. This mainly has an impact on coronagraphy and the METIS AO team is actively investigating ways to compensate also water vapor turbulence. The main challenge is currently obtaining reliable data on the distribution and magnitude of precipitable water vapor fluctuations.

Linear quadratic Gaussian control for adaptive optics and multiconjugate adaptive optics: experimental and numerical analysis

We present a comprehensive analysis of the linear quadratic Gaussian control approach applied to adaptive optics (AO) and multiconjugated AO (MCAO) based on numerical and experimental validations. The structure of the control law is presented and its main properties discussed. We then propose an extended experimental validation of this control law in AO and a simplified MCAO configuration. Performance is compared with end-to-end numerical simulations. Sensitivity of the performance regarding tuning parameters is tested. Finally, extension to full MCAO and laser tomographic AO (LTAO) through numerical simulation is presented and analyzed.
