Gigahertz electromagnetic pulse emission from femtosecond relativistic laser-irradiated solid targets.

The interactions between high-intensity laser and matter produce particle flux and electromagnetic radiation over a wide energy range. The generation of extremely intense transient fields in the radio frequency-microwave regime has been observed in femtosecond-to-nanosecond laser pulses with 1011-1020-W/cm2 intensity on both conductive and dielectric targets. These fields typically cause saturation and damage to electronic equipment inside and near an experimental chamber; nevertheless, they can also be effectively used as diagnostic tools. Accordingly, the characterization of electromagnetic pulses (EMPs) is extremely important and currently a popular topic for present and future laser facilities intended for laser-matter interaction. The picosecond and sub-picosecond laser pulses are considerably shorter than the characteristic electron discharge time (∼0.1 ns) and can be efficient in generating GHz EMPs. The EMP characterization study of femtosecond laser-driven solid targets is currently mainly in the order of 100 mJ laser energy, in this study, the EMP generated by intense (Joule class) femtosecond laser irradiation of solid targets has been measured as a function of laser energy, laser pulse duration, focal spot size, and target materials. And a maximum electric field of the EMP reaching up to 105 V/m was measured. Analyses of experimental results confirm a direct correlation between measured EMP energy and laser parameters in the ultrashort pulse duration regime. The EMP signals generated by femtosecond laser irradiation of solid targets mainly originate from the return current inside the target after hot electron excitation. Numerical simulations of EMP are performed according to the target charging model, which agree well with the experimental results.

Radiation of extreme ultraviolet source and out-of-band from laser-irradiated low-density SnO<sub>2</sub> target

The extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography technology required for high-end chip manufacturing is the first of 35 “bottleneck” key technologies that China is facing currently. The high conversion efficiency EUV source and low out-of-band radiation play a significant role in the application of the EUV lithography system. In this work, the EUV source and out-of-band radiation are studied by using laser irradiated solid Sn target and low-density SnO<sub>2</sub> target. The result shows that a strong EUV radiation at a wavelength of 13.5 nm is generated when the laser irradiates the two forms of Sn targets. Owing to the self-absorption effect of the solid Sn target plasma, the maximum intensity of the wavelength is not located at the position of 13.5 nm, which is working wavelength of EUV lithography system. However, the peak radiation spectrum is located at the position of 13.5 nm with low-density SnO<sub>2</sub> target due to its weaker plasma self-absorption effect. In addition, the satellite lines are weaker in low-density SnO<sub>2</sub> target than in the solid Sn target, so that the spectrum efficiency of the EUV at 13.5 nm (2% bandwidth) is increased by about 20%. On the other hand, the experimental study of the out-of-band radiation is carried out. The out-of-band radiation spectral results show that the out-of-band radiation is mainly dominated by the continuum spectrum. Compared with the solid Sn target, the low-density SnO<sub>2</sub> target contains a part of the low <i>Z</i> element O (<i>Z</i> = 8), resulting in a low-intensity continuum spectrum. In addition, the collision probability of ion-ion and electron-ion both become low when the laser irradiates the low-density SnO<sub>2</sub> target, resulting in a short out-of-band radiation duration time. Therefore, the out-of-band radiation generated by the laser irradiated on the low-density SnO<sub>2</sub> target is weak based on the above reasons. The angular distribution of out-of-band radiation measurement results shows that the intensity of out-of-band radiation decreases with the angle increasing. A cosine function <inline-formula><tex-math id="M2">\begin{document}$A \cos ^\alpha \theta$\end{document}</tex-math><alternatives><graphic xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="6-20222385_M2.jpg"/><graphic xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="6-20222385_M2.png"/></alternatives></inline-formula> can fit the angular distribution of the total radiation.

Terahertz Emission Enhanced by a Laser Irradiating on a T-Type Target

The generation of high field terahertz emission based on the interaction between an ultra-intense laser and solid targets has been widely studied in recent years because of its wide potential applications in biological imaging and material science. Here, a novel scheme is proposed to enhance the terahertz emission, in which a linearly polarized laser pulse irradiates a T-type target including a longitudinal target followed by a transverse target. By using two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, we find that the electron beam, modulated by the direct laser acceleration via the interaction of the laser with the longitudinal solid target, plays a crucial role in enhancing the intensity of terahertz emission and controlling its spatial distribution. Compared with the single-layer target, the maximum radiated electromagnetic field’s intensity passing through the spatial probe point is enhanced by about one order of magnitude, corresponding to the terahertz emission power increasing by two orders of magnitude or so. In addition, the proposed scheme is robust with respect to the thickness and length of the target. Such a scheme may provide important theoretical and data support for the enhancement of terahertz emission efficiency based on the ultra-intense laser irradiation of solid targets.

Investigation of hard x-ray emissions from terawatt laser-irradiated foils at the Matter in Extreme Conditions instrument of the Linac Coherent Light Source

In this technical report, we investigate the hard x-ray background produced at the Matter in Extreme Conditions (MEC) instrument of the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS) from the interaction of a high-intensity (∼1019 W/cm2) femtosecond laser with solid μm-thick aluminum and polypropylene targets. This background is dominated by bremsstrahlung from laser-generated relativistic electrons, and a measurement of the broadband x-ray spectrum via differential x-ray energy filtering was used to infer the existence of two electron distributions with electron temperatures of Thot = 500 ± 300 keV and Tcold = 5.0 ± 0.5 keV. Simultaneous single-shot measurements of the proton energies accelerated from laser-irradiated solid targets could be correlated with these measurements to further constrain the on-target laser parameters. Measurements of the hard x-ray photon background generated from laser-irradiated foils can be used to directly monitor and test the signal-to-background limits of silicon-based hybrid pixel array x-ray detectors at laser intensities approaching 1019 W/cm2.

Experimental investigations of hard x-ray source produced by picosecond laser-irradiated solid target

Measurements of Kα line and bremsstrahlung continuous x-ray emission from high-intensity laser-irradiated thin targets are presented. The experiments were performed at the SG-II UP Petawatt laser. Self-standing Sn foils varying thicknesses and Sn foils backed by the thick substrate were irradiated by the laser pulses up to 300 J of energy with peak intensity higher than 1018 W/cm2. A transmission curved crystal spectrometer and a filter-stack spectrometer were used to measure the Kα line and bremsstrahlung x-ray spectral distribution, respectively. Both Kα and 70–200 keV x-ray yields decrease 3- to 5-fold for target backed by the substrate. 2- to 4-fold reduction of Kα and 70–200 keV x-ray yields for the 8.5 μm targets relative to 50 μm targets was observed. Moreover, a significant background x-ray emission generated from the target holder reduces the ratio of signal to noise. Adopting a low-Z material holder can mitigate the x-ray background noises. This study is instructive to optimize target design for the high-intensity laser-driven Kα or continuous x-ray sources.

Analysis of electromagnetic pulses generated from ultrashort laser irradiation of solid targets at CLAPA

Electromagnetic pulses (EMPs) produced by the interaction of a TW femtosecond laser with solid targets at the Compact Laser Plasma Accelerator (CLAPA) are measured and interpreted. The statistical results confirm that the intensities of the EMPs are closely related to both target material and thickness. The signal of the titanium target is more abundant than that of the copper target with the same thickness, and the intensity of EMP is positively correlated with the target thickness for aluminium foil. With the boosted EMP radiations, the energy of accelerated protons is also simultaneously enhanced. In addition, EMPs emitted from the front of the target exceed those from the rear, which are also pertinent to the specific target position. The resonant waveforms in the target chamber are analyzed using the fast Fourier transform, and the local resonance and the attenuation lead to changes of the frequency spectra of EMPs with variation of detecting positions, which is well supported by the modeling results. The findings are beneficial to gaining insight into the mechanism of EMP propagation in a typical target chamber and providing more information for EMP shielding design.

Enhanced X-ray emission arising from laser-plasma confinement by a strong transverse magnetic field

We analyze, using experiments and 3D MHD numerical simulations, the dynamic and radiative properties of a plasma ablated by a laser (1 ns, 10^{12}–10^{13} W/cm^2) from a solid target as it expands into a homogeneous, strong magnetic field (up to 30 T) that is transverse to its main expansion axis. We find that as early as 2 ns after the start of the expansion, the plasma becomes constrained by the magnetic field. As the magnetic field strength is increased, more plasma is confined close to the target and is heated by magnetic compression. We also observe that after sim 8 ns, the plasma is being overall shaped in a slab, with the plasma being compressed perpendicularly to the magnetic field, and being extended along the magnetic field direction. This dense slab rapidly expands into vacuum; however, it contains only sim 2% of the total plasma. As a result of the higher density and increased heating of the plasma confined against the laser-irradiated solid target, there is a net enhancement of the total X-ray emissivity induced by the magnetization.

Simulation of hard x-rays source produced by a picosecond laser irradiated solid target for Compton radiography

A bremsstrahlung radiation hard x-ray source, produced by a picosecond intense laser irradiated solid target, was used to diagnose an implosion capsule at stagnation phase via Compton radiography in experiments. By performing Monte Carlo and particle-in-cell simulation, we investigated the influence of target materials and laser intensity on the >70 keV bremsstrahlung hard x-ray emission. We found that the brightness of the hard x-rays is proportional to the atomic number multiplied by area density (ZρL), which indicates that the higher Z and higher density gold or uranium material will produce the brightest hard x-rays source at the same thickness. In relativistic laser solid interactions, hot electron recirculation plays an important role in hard x-ray emission. Without recirculation, hard x-ray conversion efficiency decays when increasing the laser intensity. While the hard x-ray emission comes to the maximal saturated conversion efficiency at relativistic laser intensity if considering the electron recirculation. These results provide valuable insights into the experimental design of Compton radiography.

Gamma-ray generation from ultraintense laser-irradiated solid targets with preplasma

Abstract In the laser plasma interaction of quantum electrodynamics (QED)-dominated regime, γ-rays are generated due to synchrotron radiation from high-energy electrons traveling in a strong background electromagnetic field. With the aid of 2D particle-in-cell code including QED physics, we investigate the preplasma effect on the γ-ray generation during the interaction between an ultraintense laser pulse and solid targets. We found that with the increasing preplasma scale length, the γ-ray emission is enhanced significantly and finally reaches a steady state. Meanwhile, the γ-ray beam becomes collimated. This shows that, in some cases, the preplasmas will be piled up acting as a plasma mirror in the underdense preplasma region, where the γ-rays are produced by the collision between the forward electrons and the reflected laser fields from the piled plasma. The piled plasma plays the same role as the usual reflection mirror made from a solid target. Thus, a single solid target with proper scale length preplasma can serve as a manufactural and robust γ-ray source.

Highly-collimated, high-charge and broadband MeV electron beams produced by magnetizing solids irradiated by high-intensity lasers

Laser irradiation of solid targets can drive short and high-charge relativistic electron bunches over micron-scale acceleration gradients. However, for a long time, this technique was not considered a viable means of electron acceleration due to the large intrinsic divergence (∼50° half-angle) of the electrons. Recently, a reduction in this divergence to 10°–20° half-angle has been obtained, using plasma-based magnetic fields or very high contrast laser pulses to extract the electrons into the vacuum. Here we show that we can further improve the electron beam collimation, down to ∼1.5° half-angle, of a high-charge (6 nC) beam, and in a highly reproducible manner, while using standard stand-alone 100 TW-class laser pulses. This is obtained by embedding the laser-target interaction in an external, large-scale (cm), homogeneous, extremely stable, and high-strength (20 T) magnetic field that is independent of the laser. With upcoming multi-PW, high repetition-rate lasers, this technique opens the door to achieving even higher charges (>100 nC).

Analysis of nascent silicon phase-change gratings induced by femtosecond laser irradiation in vacuum

The formation of periodic surface structures is a general effect of femtosecond laser irradiation of solid targets showing promising interest in material science and technology. However, the experiments are typically carried out in air, a condition in which the target surface becomes densely decorated with nanoparticles that can influence the formation of the surface structures in the early stage of the irradiation process. Here we report an investigation of structures generation on a silicon surface irradiated in vacuum (10−5 mbar) with a low number of laser pulses (N ≤ 10) that exploits several microscopy techniques (optical, atomic force, electron and Raman). Our analyses allow identifying the creation of silicon phase-change gratings consisting of alternating amorphous and crystalline periodic lines, with almost no material removal, located at the periphery of a shallow ablation crater. These gratings originate from two different kinds of defects: (i) the first is characterized by a peculiar lobed shape that is produced by the first few laser pulses; (ii) the second is provided by the one-dimensional, linear singularity defined by the ablation edge of the nascent crater. Both kind of defects lead to grating structures extending outwards the amorphous central area of the crater along the direction of the laser polarization. Comparative analysis with the surface formed in air, in the same experimental conditions, evidences the important role played by nanoparticles densely decorating the target in air and the striking variation occurring in vacuum.

Ion distribution and ablation depth measurements of a fs-ps laser-irradiated solid tin target

The ablation of solid tin surfaces by a 800-nanometer-wavelength laser is studied for a pulse length range from 500 fs to 4.5 ps and a fluence range spanning from 0.9 to 22 J/cm2. The ablation depth and volume are obtained employing a high-numerical-aperture optical microscope, while the ion yield and energy distributions are obtained from a set of Faraday cups set up under various angles. We found a slight increase of the ion yield for an increasing pulse length, while the ablation depth is slightly decreasing. The ablation volume remained constant as a function of pulse length. The ablation depth follows a two-region logarithmic dependence on the fluence, in agreement with the available literature and theory. In the examined fluence range, the ion yield angular distribution is sharply peaked along the target normal at low fluences but rapidly broadens with increasing fluence. The total ionization fraction increases monotonically with fluence to a 5%–6% maximum, which is substantially lower than the typical ionization fractions obtained with nanosecond-pulse ablation. The angular distribution of the ions does not depend on the laser pulse length within the measurement uncertainty. These results are of particular interest for the possible utilization of fs-ps laser systems in plasma sources of extreme ultraviolet light for nanolithography.

Measurements of X-ray doses and spectra produced by picosecond laser-irradiated solid targets

Experiments have shown that high-intensity laser interaction with a solid target can generate significant X-ray doses. This study was conducted to determine the X-ray doses and spectra produced for picosecond laser-irradiated solid targets. The photon doses and X-ray spectra in the laser forward and side directions were measured using an XG III ps 300 TW laser system. For laser intensities of 7×1018–4×1019W/cm2, the maximum photon dose was 16.8 mSv at 50cm with a laser energy of ~153J on a 1-mm Ta target. The photon dose in the forward direction increased more significantly with increasing laser intensity than that in the side direction. For photon energies >300keV, the X-ray spectrum can be fit with an effective temperature distribution of the exponential form, dN/dE = k× exp(−E/Tx). The X-ray temperature Tx increased with the laser intensity in the forward direction with values of 0.46–0.75MeV. Tx was less strongly correlated with the laser intensity in the side direction with values of 0.29–0.32MeV. The escaping electron spectrum was also measured. The measured electron temperature was correlated with the electron temperature predicted by the ponderomotive law. The observations in this experiment were also investigated numerically. A good agreement was observed between the experimental and simulation results.

A method to achieve rapid localised deep heating in a laser irradiated solid density target

Rapid heating of small buried regions by laser generated fast electrons may be useful for applications such as extreme ultraviolet (XUV) radiation sources or as drivers for shock experiments. In non-structured targets, the heating profile possesses a global maximum near the front surface. This paper presents a new target design that uses resistive guiding to concentrate the fast electron current density at a finite depth inside the target. The choice of geometry uses principles of non-imaging optics. A global temperature maximum at depths up to 50 μm into the target is achieved. Although theoretical calculations suggest that small source sizes should perform better than large ones, simulations show that a large angular spread at high intensities results in significant losses of the fast electrons to the sides. A systematic parameter scan suggests an optimal laser intensity. A ratio of 1.6 is demonstrated between the maximum ion temperature and the ion temperature at the front surface.

Directed fast electron beams in ultraintense picosecond laser irradiated solid targets

We report on fast electron transport and emission patterns from solid targets irradiated by s-polarized, relativistically intense, picosecond laser pulses. A beam of multi-MeV electrons is found to be transported along the target surface in the laser polarization direction. The spatial-intensity and energy distributions of this beam are compared with the beam produced along the laser propagation axis. It is shown that even for peak laser intensities an order of magnitude higher than the relativistic threshold, laser polarization still plays an important role in electron energy transport. Results from 3D particle-in-cell simulations confirm the findings. The characterization of directional beam emission is important for applications requiring efficient energy transfer, including secondary photon and ion source development.

Diagnosis of energy transport in iron buried layer targets using an extreme ultraviolet laser

We demonstrate the use of extreme ultra-violet (EUV) laboratory lasers in probing energy transport in laser irradiated solid targets. EUV transmission through targets containing a thin layer of iron (50 nm) encased in plastic (CH) after irradiation by a short pulse (35 fs) laser focussed to irradiances 3 × 1016 Wcm−2 is measured. Heating of the iron layer gives rise to a rapid decrease in EUV opacity and an increase in the transmission of the 13.9 nm laser radiation as the iron ionizes to Fe5+ and above where the ion ionisation energy is greater than the EUV probe photon energy (89 eV). A one dimensional hydrodynamic fluid code HYADES has been used to simulate the temporal variation in EUV transmission (wavelength 13.9 nm) using IMP opacity values for the iron layer and the simulated transmissions are compared to measured transmission values. When a deliberate pre-pulse is used to preform an expanding plastic plasma, it is found that radiation is important in the heating of the iron layer while for pre-pulse free irradiation, radiation transport is not significant.

Probing of laser-irradiated solid targets using coherent extreme ultra-violet radiation

The diagnostic potential of extreme ultraviolet (EUV) coherent probing within a laser produced plasma is investigated. A fluid code is used to model the interaction of a 35 fs, 2 × 1014 Wcm−2 800 nm laser pulse with an 800 nm thick aluminium target. A post processor is used to calculate the refractive index and transmission to 45 eV radiation of the target. The effects of EUV radial phase variations at the rear of the target on the intensity distribution at a detector 1.5 m from the target are studied. An irradiated aluminium target is found to have little effect on the transmission of 45 eV radiation, however, there are significant phase retardation differences of the probing beam in the radial direction. These phase variations affect the subsequent propagation of the radiation, suggesting that a simple diagnostic that measures the far-field footprint of the coherent EUV radiation passing through an irradiated target is sensitive to radial variations of the target heating. Sample calculated footprint variations associated with a drop in laser absorption to an irradiance of 1014 Wcm−2 at a radius from the focal centre of 50 μm are shown.

For studing the yield and spatial distributions of protons produced in the interaction of femtosecond laser with plasmas, protons behavior at the normal direction of the rear surface of the target irradiated by ultra-intensity pulse laser irradiated solid targets was explored on SILEX-I laser facility. The yield and spatial distributions of the protons with different target thicknesses were recorded by radiochromic film (RCF) HD810. The results show that the optics density (OD) is closely correlated with the protons flux, OD values increase with the increasing of proton beam flux;For fixed thickness of C8H8 layer, the proton beam flux and yield of protons and OD of RCF decrease with the increasing Cu layer thickness;for the same thickness of targets, the OD and yield of protons decrease with the decreases of laser intensity;And the corresponding spatial profile of proton beam shows ring-, filament-, and disc-like distribution. The size of the distribution is independent of laser focus.

Simultaneous imaging of K-α radiation and coherent transition radiation from relativistic-intensity laser-irradiated solid target plasmas

Laser acceleration of hot electrons and their transport through 12–32 μm thick Ti foils was explored experimentally using two complementary diagnostics, a bent crystal imaging the Ti K α emission and optical imaging of the coherent transition radiation (CTR) produced by the exit of the hot electrons from the foil. The spatial extent of the hot electron production measured by these two diagnostics is dramatically different. Electrons producing CTR emerge in a spot of less than 7 μm and appear to maintain a high degree of collimation during transport through the foil while electrons that produce K α emission appear to diverge to sizes of 50–100 μm as viewed from the back surface of the foil. These results indicate that there is a large difference in the transport of the highest energy electrons contributing to CTR signal as compared with the bulk of the hot electron population generating K α signal.

On the investigation of fast electron beam filamentation in laser-irradiated solid targets using multi-MeV proton emission

The transverse filamentation of beams of fast electrons transported in solid targets irradiated by ultraintense (5 × 1020 W cm−2), picosecond laser pulses is investigated experimentally. Filamentation is diagnosed by measuring the uniformity of a beam of multi-MeV protons accelerated by the sheath field formed by the arrival of the fast electrons at the rear of the target, and is investigated for metallic and insulator targets ranging in thickness from 50 to 1200 µm. By developing an analytical model, the effects of lateral expansion of electron beam filaments in the sheath during the proton acceleration process is shown to account for measured increases in proton beam nonuniformity with target thickness for the insulating targets.
