THz vs NIR laser-assisted atom probe tomography of LaB6 samples

Terahertz (THz) radiation with low-energy photons (meV) is used in a wide range of applications, such as microscopy, sensing, and spectroscopy. However, recently, high amplitude THz pulses of MV/cm have been generated and used for electron emission and ion evaporation from field emitters, opening up the possibility of using high amplitude THz pulses for material imaging by THz-assisted atom probe tomography (APT). In this work, we compare the APT analyses of lanthanum hexaboride (LaB6) samples using a femtosecond near-infrared laser with those obtained using high-amplitude single-cycle THz pulses. The atomic-scale characterization of stoichiometric LaB6 is challenging in laser-assisted APT due to the detection losses of boron ions. Here, we show that the THz radiation reduces the emission of molecular ions and multiple detection events, and it increases the charge state of the emitted ions. All these effects result in an improvement in boron detection. Furthermore, the emission dynamics of boron and lanthanum ions differ in their evaporation times when using THz radiation. This work emphasizes the ability of high-amplitude, single-cycle THz pulses to well control material analysis in APT, leading to better results on chemical composition. It also paves the way for the use of this radiation for material manipulation.

Field-dependent abundances of hydride molecular ions in atom probe tomography of III-N semiconductors.

We investigate the microscopic behaviour of hydrogen-containing species formed on the surface of III-N semiconductor samples by the residual hydrogen in the analysis chamber in laser-assisted atom probe tomography (APT). We analysed AlGaN/GaN heterostructures containing alternate layers with a thickness of about 20nm. The formation of H-containing species occurs at field strengths between 22 and 26V/nm and is independent of the analysed samples. The 3D APT reconstruction makes it possible to map the evolution of the surface behaviour of these species issued by chemical reactions. The results highlight the strong dependence of the relative abundances of hydrides on the surface field during evaporation. The relative abundances of the hydrides decrease when the surface field increases due to the evolution of the tip shape or the different evaporation behaviour of the different layers.

Is it meaningful to quantify vacancy concentrations of nanolamellar (Ti,Al)N thin films based on laser-assisted atom probe data?

Recently, it was proposed to quantify vacancy concentrations based on laser-assisted atom probe tomography (APT) data for a (Ti,Al)N film with a nanolamellar architecture, grown by chemical vapor deposition. To determine, whether vacancy concentrations can be reliably estimated based on APT data, we systematically compare measurements with an ultraviolet (UV) as well as a green laser to ion beam analysis data. First, monolithic TiN and AlN films, which are stoichiometric within the measurement uncertainties of ion beam analysis, are investigated. In case of TiN an electric field strength of 39.4 V nm−1 and a nitrogen content of 49.0 at.%, consistent with ion beam analysis data, is obtained with both lasers, when using pulse energies of 5 pJ (UV laser) and 0.1 nJ (green laser). However, significant differences can be observed for monolithic AlN as nitrogen contents from 41.9 to 35.8 at.% and 48.4 to 41.4 at.% are measured, depending on variations of the pulse energies of the UV and green laser, respectively. In order to mimic a nanolamellar architecture for correlative compositional analysis by ion beam analysis and laser-assisted APT, a TiN/AlN/TiN trilayer film is synthesized and significant deviations with respect to the nitrogen content are evident for the AlN layer. While the average nitrogen concentration from ion beam analysis is 51 at.%, nitrogen contents from laser-assisted APT data are only 38 at.% (UV laser) or 41 at.% (green laser). Hence, the nitrogen content of the AlN layer is underestimated from laser-assisted APT data by at least 10 and up to 13 at.% and this significant discrepancy cannot be explained by the measurement uncertainties. Thus, the here presented data emphasize that it is not meaningful to quantify vacancy concentrations of nanolamellar (Ti,Al)N thin films solely based on atom probe data, since the measurement accuracy depends on the field evaporation conditions.

Decomposition of CrN induced by laser-assisted atom probe tomography

It is known that measurement parameters can significantly influence the elemental composition determined by atom probe tomography (APT). Especially results obtained by laser-assisted APT show a strong effect of the laser pulse energy on the apparent elemental composition. Within this study laser-assisted APT experiments were performed on Cr0.51N0.49 and thermally more stable (Cr0.47Al0.53)0.49N0.51, comparing two different base temperatures (i.e. 15 and 60 K), laser wavelengths (i.e. 532 and 355 nm) and systematically modified laser pulse energies. Absolute chemical compositions from laser-assisted APT were compared to data obtained from ion beam analysis. The deduced elemental composition of CrN exhibited a strong increase of the Cr content when the laser pulse energy was increased for both laser wavelengths. For low laser pulse energies Cr, CrN, N and N2 ions were identified, while the amount of detected Cr ions increased and the amount of N ions strongly decreased at higher laser pulse energies. Further, increased detection of more complex Cr-containing ions such as Cr2N at the expense of CrN was observed at higher pulse energies. At the highest pulse energy levels used within this work, the resulting Cr content was > 80 at%, dominated by the amount of detected elemental Cr ions. The change of the mass spectrum of the detected ions with increasing laser pulse energy provides evidence that high laser pulse energies initiate the decomposition of CrN during the APT measurement, consistent with the known thermal decomposition path into Cr2N and subsequently into Cr and gaseous N. In contrast, variation of the laser pulse energy for the thermally more stable CrAlN resulted only in a slight increase of Cr and a decrease of the resulting concentrations of Al and N with increasing laser pulse energy and no change in the type of detected ions. In conclusion, within the present study, the decomposition of a coating material with low thermal stability induced by laser-assisted APT was reported for the first time, emphasizing the importance of the selection of suitable measurement parameters for metastable materials, which are prone to thermal decomposition.

Atom Probe Tomography Analysis of Mica.

Laser-assisted atom probe tomography (APT) is a relatively new, powerful technique for sub-nanometric mineral and biomineral analysis. However, the laser-assisted APT analysis of highly anisotropic and chemically diverse minerals, such as phyllosilicates, may prove especially challenging due to the complex interaction between the crystal structure and the laser pulse upon applying a high electric field. Micas are a representative group of nonswelling clay minerals of relevance to a number of scientific and technological fields. In this study, a Mg-rich biotite was analyzed by APT to generate preliminary data on nonisotropic minerals and to investigate the effect of the crystallographic orientation on mica chemical composition and structure estimation. The difference in results obtained for specimens extracted from the (001) and (hk0) mica surfaces indicate the importance of both experimental parameters and the crystallography. Anisotropy of mica has a strong influence on the physicochemical properties of the mineral during field evaporation and the interpretation of APT data. The promising results obtained in the present study open the way to future innovative APT applications on mica and clay minerals and contribute to the general discussion on the challenges for the analysis of geomaterials by atom probe tomography.

Dehydrogenation-Driven Prelithiation in the Absence of Li Metal to Enhance the Initial Efficiency of Sio-Based Anode Materials in Lithium-Ion Batteries

Silicon monoxide (SiO) based materials are long-established high-capacity anode materials that are used in commercialized lithium-ion batteries. However, the inherently low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) is a hurdle to overcome, prior to their full potential utilization as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. In this presentation, we demonstrate that the ICE of SiO can be enhanced to reach up to 90.5%, through a dehydrogenation-driven Li metal absent prelithiation method using lithium hydride (LiH). Released lithium that originates from LiH, preemptively forms lithium silicate phases, the main reason behind the low ICE of SiO. Through laser-assisted atom probe tomography (LA-APT) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), the formation of three-dimensionally networked Si/lithium silicate nanocomposite was visualized. The prelithiated SiO exhibits a capacity of 1203 mAh g-1 with an ICE of 90.5% without detrimental alterations in electrochemical performance. The boost in ICE of prelithiated SiO results in a 50% enhancement of energy density of the full cell (37 mAh) compared to pristine SiO, with excellent cycle performance lasting for 800 cycles. Further description of the reaction mechanism and the resulting microstructure obtained through the suggested prelithiation will be discussed more in detail in the presentation.

Correlative atom probe tomography and optical spectroscopy: An original gateway to materials science and nanoscale physics

Atom probe tomography (APT) correlated with optical spectroscopy has yielded original results in the domain of semiconductor nanoscale heterostructures. Statistical correlation (i.e., microscopy correlated with spectroscopy performed on macroscopic samples) has opened the way to a deeper understanding of carrier localization and recombination mechanisms in quantum-well systems. However, photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL) can be performed even on APT samples fabricated by focused ion beam, making it possible to perform sequential correlations on a single nanoscale object, which allows for a higher precision and accuracy. Finally, the laser pulse used for triggering the evaporation in laser-assisted APT can also generate a photoluminescence signal: this opportunity is exploited in the photonic atom probe. This instrument not only represents an original and effective way to perform in situ correlative microscopy, but also opens the way to study nanoscale physical phenomena driven by field, stress, or sample shape via the interpretation of the dynamically acquired APT and PL information.Graphical abstract

Topology Optimized Prelithiated SiO Anode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Silicon monoxide (SiO)-based materials have great potential as high-capacity anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. However, they suffer from a low initial coulombic efficiency (ICE) and poor cycle stability, which prevent their successful implementation into commercial lithium-ion batteries. Despite considerable efforts in recent decades, their low ICE and poor cycle stability cannot be resolved at the same time. Here, it is demonstrated that the topological optimization of the prelithiated SiO materials is highly effective in improving both ICE and capacity retention. Laser-assisted atom probe tomography combined with thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry reveals that two exothermic reactions related to microstructural evolution are key in optimizing the domain size of the Si active phase and Li2 SiO3 buffer phase, and their topological arrangements in prelithiated SiO materials. The optimized prelithiated SiO, heat-treated at 650 °C, shows higher capacity retention of 73.4% and lower thickness changes of 68% after 300 cycles than those treated at other temperatures, with high ICE of ≈90% and reversible capacity of 1164 mAh g-1 . Such excellent electrochemical properties of the prelithiated SiO electrode originate from its optimized topological arrangement of active Si phase and Li2 SiO3 inactive buffer phase.

Learning Atom Probe Tomography time-of-flight peaks for mass-to-charge ratio spectrometry

In laser-assisted atom probe tomography, an important goal is to reconstruct the mass-to-charge ratio, (m/z), spectrum due to various ion species. In general, the probability mass function (pmf) associated with the time-of-flight (TOF) spectrum produced by each ion species is unknown and varies from species-to-species. Moreover, measuring pmfs for distinct ion species in calibration experiments is not practical. Here, we present a mixture model method to determine TOF pmfs that can vary from peak-to-peak. In this approach, we determine weights of candidate pmfs with a maximum likelihood method. In a proof-of-principle study, we apply our method to a TOF spectrum acquired from a silicon sample and determine intensity estimates of singly charged isotopes of silicon.

The improved ICE of prelithiated SiO made possible to enhance the energy density of full cell (37 mAh) by 50% compared to that adopting pristine SiO with an excellent cycle performance over 800 cycles.

Behavior of the ε-Ga2O3:Sn Evaporation During Laser-Assisted Atom Probe Tomography.

The measurement of the composition of ε-Ga2O3 and the quantification of Sn doping in ε-Ga2O3:Sn by laser-assisted atom probe tomography (APT) may be inaccurate depending on the experimental conditions. Both the role of the laser energy and surface electric field were investigated, and the results clearly indicate that deviations from stoichiometry are observed changing the electric field conditions during APT. The measured atomic fraction of Ga can change from 0.45 at low field to 0.38 at high field, to be compared with the expected 0.4. This was interpreted in terms of preferential evaporation of Ga at high field and deficit of O at low field, which was caused by the formation of neutrals. The quantification of Sn-doping is accurate at low-field conditions, with an overestimation of the detected Sn-metallic fraction at high field. This suggests that Sn has a higher evaporation field compared to Ga. Finally, multiple detection events were in-depth studied, revealing that three dissociation reactions occur during APT: GaO2+ → Ga+ + O+; Ga2O22+ → Ga+ + GaO2+; Ga3O22+ → Ga+ + Ga2O2+. Nevertheless, only 2% of the detected events are related to such dissociation reactions, too small a fraction to fully explain the observed deviation from the stoichiometric composition in ε-Ga2O3.

Influence of element distribution on mechanical properties in the bonding zone of explosively welded steels

A melt pocket in the bonding zone of medium carbon steel bonded on low-carbon steel by explosive welding was investigated by laser assisted atom probe tomography. It was found that the structure is nanocrystalline and (sub-) grain boundaries are enriched with carbon. High hardness values in the melt pocket are attributed to a combination of (sub-) grain size and carbon distribution.

Detecting Dissociation Dynamics of Phosphorus Molecular Ions by Atom Probe Tomography.

Dissociation processes involving phosphorus cations were investigated during laser-assisted atom probe tomography of crystalline indium phosphide (InP). This technique not only allows the formation of medium-sized phosphorus cations by means of femtosecond laser pulses under ultrahigh vacuum and high electric field conditions but also allows one to study the time-resolved dissociation dynamics. Data reveal the formation of cations up to P232+ and their subsequent dissociation into two smaller Pk+ cations (k > 2). The use of a time- and position-sensitive detector combined with numerical calculations provided information related to the molecule orientation, decay time, and kinetic energy release during dissociation phenomena. Results suggest that the dissociation processes are most likely due to the emission of Pk2+ cations in excited states and their subsequent decay in low field regions during their flight toward the detector. This study provides operative guidelines to obtain information on dissociation processes using a tomographic atom probe as a reaction microscope and indicates the current capabilities and limitations of such an approach.

Crystallite distribution analysis based on hydrogen content in thin-film nanocrystalline silicon solar cells by atom probe tomography

The three-dimensional (3D) distribution of nanosized silicon (Si) crystallites within a hydrogenated nanocrystalline Si (nc-Si:H) material is examined by laser-assisted atom probe tomography (APT). The amorphous and crystalline phases in nc-Si:H are distinguished by obtaining the 3D density distribution of H atoms, because the former contains a high H density. The H content in the amorphous phase is estimated to be approximately 15 at% by APT, which is consistent with that obtained by infrared spectroscopy. Thus, the 3D analysis of H distribution via APT is a powerful method to visualize the real shape of nanosized crystallites within nc-Si:H materials.

3D impurity profiles of doped/intrinsic amorphous-silicon layers composing textured silicon heterojunction solar cells detected by atom probe tomography

Laser-assisted atom probe tomography was used to identify the impurity distribution in Si heterojunction (SHJ) solar cells composed of thin doped/intrinsic amorphous Si layers on the textured surface of a crystalline Si wafer. A site-specific lift-out technique involving a focused ion beam enabled the selection of a ∼2 × 2 μm2 area on an arbitrary pyramidal surface. The distributions of B, P and C in the amorphous Si layers introduced by p-type (trimethyl-borane or diborane) or n-type (phosphine) dopant gases were investigated. Standard guidelines for the assessment of the H content in amorphous Si of SHJ solar cells were provided.

A photonic atom probe coupling 3D atomic scale analysis with in situ photoluminescence spectroscopy

Laser enhanced field evaporation of surface atoms in laser-assisted Atom Probe Tomography (APT) can simultaneously excite photoluminescence in semiconductor or insulating specimens. An atom probe equipped with appropriate focalization and collection optics has been coupled with an in situ micro-photoluminescence (μPL) bench that can be operated during APT analysis. The photonic atom probe instrument we have developed operates at frequencies up to 500 kHz and is controlled by 150 fs laser pulses tunable in energy in a large spectral range (spanning from deep UV to near IR). Micro-PL spectroscopy is performed using a 320 mm focal length spectrometer equipped with a CCD camera for time-integrated and with a streak camera for time-resolved acquisitions. An example of application of this instrument on a multi-quantum well oxide heterostructure sample illustrates the potential of this new generation of tomographic atom probes.
