Redescription of three pinworms of the genus Cephalobellus Cobb, 1920 (Nematoda: Oxyuridomorpha: Thelastomatidae) from scarab beetle grubs from Hungary

Larvae of European rose chafer Cetonia aurata (Linnaeus, 1758) and cockchafer Melolontha sp. beetles were collected in Hungary for parasitological study. Intestinal examination revealed the presence of three well-known thelastomatid nematodes belonging to the genus Cephalobellus Cobb, 1920. We report for the first-time Cephalobellus cuspidatum (Rudolphi, 1814) Leibersperger, 1960, C. osmodermae Leibersperger, 1960, and C. potosiae Leibersperger, 1960 in Hungary, all found in scarab beetle larvae. Due to incomplete original descriptions, a comprehensive redescription with detailed morphological data is presented. Additionally, an identification key for closely related Cephalobellus, Thelastoma and Severianoia species infesting scarab beetles worldwide is provided. Newly generated 18S and 28S rDNA gene sequences of C. osmodermae place it as one of the early branches within Thelastomatidae.

Family Scoliidae as parasitoids of (Insecta: Hymenoptera) beetles (Insecta: Coleoptera)

Scoliidae waxes are solitary parasitoids from scarab beetle larvae. Female Scoliidae throws themselves into the ground in search of these larvae and then paralyze them with a string. Before laying the egg, they sometimes dig up the chamber and move the paralyzed beetle larva into it. Scoliidae wasps act as important biocontrol agents because many of the beetles they parasitize are pests, including the Japanese beetle. Male Scoliidae guards the territory, ready to mate with females emerging from the ground. Adult wasps can be flower pollinators of some plants and can find it on many flowers in late summer. The purpose of this paper is to describe the Family Scoliidae as parasitoids of (Insecta: Hymenoptera) beetles (Insecta: Coleoptera). For this, a bibliographic survey of Scoliidae was carried out oufromin the years 1971 to 2021. Only complete articles published in scientific journals and expanded abstracts presented at national and international scientific events were considered. Data were also obtained from Plataforma: Academia.edu, Frontiers, Qeios, Pubmed, Biological Abstract, Publons, Dialnet, World, Wide Science, Springer, RefSeek, Microsoft Academic, Science and ERIC.

Habitats and parasitoid abundance influence spatial density dependence patterns, rendering an asilid fly as a potential biological controller of white grubs

The behavioral response of a parasitoid shows the effect on host parasitism patterns at a given host distribution. As a result, an increase or decrease in parasitism intensity according to local host densities is found. This relationship could be proportional, positive, or negative, as a consequence of host foraging.Mallophora ruficaudais a parasitoid fly that parasitizesCyclocephala signaticollisscarab beetle larvae. Females search and place egg clusters overground in open grasslands. Larvae actively search hosts underground following chemical cues arising from the host itself. The parasitism patterns are a result of this complex host-searching strategy that is shared between both stages of the fly. In this work, we carried out a study at four spatial scales in apiaries located in the Pampas region of Argentina. We aimed to assess the potential ofM. ruficaudaas a control agent of white grubs. We found that parasitism has an inverse density-dependent in relation to low female activity and a direct density-dependent in relation to high female activity at the larger spatial scale. We found an inverse density-dependent pattern at the intermediate spatial scale. Parasitism is inversely density-dependent at both smaller spatial scales, associated with oviposition substrate availability and distance. Additionally,M. ruficaudadoes not select the oviposition substrates according to the abundance ofC. signaticollisinhabiting underground. We determined thatM. ruficaudacould act as a natural biological controller ofC. signaticollis. This work shows the importance of a proper scale for the analysis of factors that influence population dynamics of entomophagous insects and for evaluating their potential as biological control agents, and how environmental characteristics mold the parasitism patterns of this dipteran parasitoid.

Scarab beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) as economically important pests and the possibility of using entomopathogenic fungi for their control

Scarab beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) are a cosmopolitan group of beetles found on all continents except Antarctica. Because of their size, vibrant colors, and above all their role in the ecosystem, they are one of the most recognizable and studied taxons of beetles. Most larvae and adult beetles of species belonging to subfamilies Melolonthinae, Rutelinae, Dynastinae and Cetoniinae feed on plant organs such as roots, leaves, flowers and young fruits and are thus considered to be species of economic importance. In this article we describe some of the most economically important species of scarabs, including their most common host plants. Because the use of chemical insecticides to control scarabs is often limited, the implementation of entomopathogenic fungi as biological control agents is an appropriate alternative based on the rational use of microorganisms to maintain an environmentally balanced level of the pest population. Representatives of the genera Beauveria and Metarhizium are the most commonly used entomopathogenic fungi to control larvae (white grubs) of scarab beetles. Biological control by entomopathogenic fungi has shown to be effective in some cases, however host range is often species-specific. Therefore, in order to effectively use the entomopathogens against scarab beetles, one needs to identify target species in grub-infested area and consequently select strains that are capable of overcoming the host’s defences.

Pivot burrowing of scarab beetle (Trypoxylus dichotomus) larva

Many organisms live in the soil but only a little is known about their ecology especially movement style. Scarab beetle larvae do not have appendages to shovel soil and their trunk is thick compared to their body length. Hence, their movement through the soil is perplexing. Here, we established the observation and analysis system of larval movement and found that the last larval instars of Trypoxylus dichotomus burrow in two different ways, depending on the hardness of the soil. If the soil is soft, the larvae keep their body in a straight line and use longitudinal expansion and contraction; if the soil is hard, they flex and rotate their body. It is thought that the larvae adapt to diverse soil conditions using two different excavation methods. These results are important for understanding the soil ecology and pose a challenge to engineer of newer excavation technology.

New records of Campsomeris servillei (Guérin-Méneville, 1831) (Hymenoptera: Scoliidae) and actual distribution in Chile

The family Scoliidae is a group of wasps that are parasitoids of scarab beetle larvae and are important biological controllers. In Chile this group is underrepresented and has no clear distribution. The aim of this short communication is to report new records and update the current distribution of the scoliid wasp Campsomeris servillei (Guerin-Meneville). We also discuss probable distribution scenarios for northern Chile as well as some aspects of the biology and ecology of these wasps.

Empirical and theoretical assessment of mechanical and injection cultivation methods to manage white grubs in turfgrass

AbstractWhite grubs, or the larvae of scarab beetles, are widespread destructive pests of turfgrass systems around the world. We sought to determine if turfgrass cultivation machinery could reliably manage white grubs in turfgrass systems. Hollow‐tine aeration provided greater reductions in grub densities than solid‐vibratory tine and air/solid injection cultivation in field trials. In following studies, low to moderate reductions (0–53%) were observed with single hollow‐tine applications, though low grub densities encountered within field plots hindered the ability to detect statistical differences between cultivation treatments including tine diameter and tine spacing. Increasing aerification frequency on plots from one to two or more passes produced statistically significant reductions (>80% control) in both years of trials. To eliminate the variability observed in the field, a simulation model was constructed to determine the expected outcome of varying tine patterns have on increasing grub densities. Models suggests that expected mortality is likely to be minimal (<10%) in one‐time aerification events. In‐field simulations using templates overlaid on natural populations demonstrated two‐fold greater control than theoretical simulations. Differences in control between field studies and model simulation are likely caused by an over‐estimation of mortality when performing presence‐absence counts in field studies when grub densities are low. Although multiple aerification events will likely improve control, current cultivation practices are unlikely to achieve the level of control expected by turfgrass managers in intensely managed landscapes.

Active sound production of scarab beetle larvae opens up new possibilities for species-specific pest monitoring in soils

Root-feeding Scarabaeidae larvae can pose a serious threat to agricultural and forest ecosystems, but many details of larval ecology are still unknown. We developed an acoustic data analysis method based on active sound production by larvae (i.e. stridulations) for gaining new insights into larval ecology. In a laboratory study, third instar larvae of the Common Cockchafer (Melolontha melolontha) (n = 38) and the Forest Cockchafer (M. hippocastani) (n = 15) kept in soil-filled containers were acoustically monitored for 5 min each, resulting in the first known stridulation recordings for each species. Subsequent continuous monitoring of three M. hippocastani larvae over several hours showed that a single larva could stridulate more than 70 times per hour, and stridulation rates increased drastically with increasing larval abundance. The new fractal dimension-based data analysis method automatically detected audio sections with stridulations and provided a semi-quantitative estimate of stridulation activity. It is the first data analysis method specifically targeting Scarabaeidae larvae stridulations in soils, enabling for the first time non-invasive species-specific pest monitoring.

A woody chamber of secrets

In temperate tree species, adventitious roots (roots that arise from any point other than the radicle or the root axis) are usually associated with stems or low-hanging branches coming in contact with the ground. However, the splitting of a large, hollow, recently felled red maple (Acer rubrum) in northern Wisconsin revealed a profusion of adventitious roots growing into a cavity, located well above the ground surface. In this case, the hollow area had formed many years before and contained a considerable volume of humus produced from wood decay and other biotic activities. In addition to the fine roots that had grown into it, this rich organic “soil” supported a considerable biota, including at least a half-dozen large scarab beetle larvae (species unidentified; probably some type of Phyllophaga [Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae]). These larvae were almost certainly consuming the fine maple roots and detritus that accumulated in the cavity. This cavity-based microcosm demonstrates how trees can recycle nutrients and capture moisture from a rather unusual source, while supporting a community of other organisms that both contribute to (through their activities as decomposers and detritivores) and detract from (as root consumers) the efforts of the tree.

Cultivable anaerobic and aerobic bacterial communities in the fermentation chambers of Holotrichia parallela (coleoptera: scarabaeidae) larvae.

As important pests, scarab beetle larvae survive on plant biomass and the microbiota of the fermentation chamber play an important role in the digestion of lignocellulose-rich diets. However, the cultivable microbes, especially the anaerobic cultivable microbes, are still largely unknown. Here, both cultivable anaerobic and aerobic bacterial communities associated with the fermentation chamber of Holotrichia parallela larvae were investigated. In total bacteria cells directly enumerated by the 4’, 6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) staining method, the viable plate counts of cultivable bacteria in the fermentation chamber accounted for 0.92% of proportion. These cultivable bacteria were prone to attach to the fermentation chamber wall (88.41%) compared to the chamber contents. Anaerobic bacteria were dominant in the cultivable bacteria attaching to the fermentation chamber wall (70.20%), while the quantities of anaerobes and aerobes were similar in the chamber contents. Polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE), fingerprinting and sequence analysis of isolated colonies revealed that the cultivable bacteria are affiliated with class γ-Proteobacteria, Bacteroidia, Actinobacteria, Clostridia and β-Proteobacteria. γ-Proteobacteria was the major type of anaerobic cultivable bacteria and even the only one type of aerobic cultivable bacteria. Taken together, our results suggest, for the first time, that anaerobic microbiota are dominant in cultivable bacteria in the special anoxia niche of the fermentation chamber from H. parallela larvae. These bacterial isolates could be a treasure trove for screening lignocellulytic microbes which are essential for the plant biomass digestion of this scarab species.

Host gut microorganisms' cues mediate orientation behaviour in the larva of the parasitoid Mallophora ruficauda.

The robber fly Mallophora ruficauda is one of the most important apicultural pests in the Pampas region of Argentina. This species is a parasitoid of scarab beetle larvae. Females lay eggs away from the host, and the larvae perform active search behaviour toward Cyclocephala signaticollis third instar larvae, parasitoid's preferred host. This behaviour is mediated by host-related chemical cues produced in hosts' fermentation chamber. Also, C. signaticollis larvae are attracted to fermentation chamber extracts. As scarab larvae have microbe-rich fermentation chamber, it has been suggested that microorganisms could be involved in the production of these semiochemicals. The aims of this work were first to ascertain the presence of microorganisms in the fermentation chamber of C. signaticollis larvae and second to determine the role of microorganisms in the orientation response of parasitoid and host larvae. We found that microorganisms-free C. signaticollis larvae showed deterioration in their development and did not produce the attractive semiochemicals. Therefore, we isolated fermentation chamber microorganisms of host larvae by means of different cultures media, and then, assayed different microorganisms' stimuli by binary choice tests. We were able to isolate microorganisms and determine that M. ruficauda larvae are attracted to semiochemicals from protein degradation in the fermentation chamber. However, C. signaticollis larvae were not attracted to any semiochemicals associated with microorganisms' activity in the fermentation chamber. Although we were unable to elucidate the exact role of gut microorganisms in host behaviour, we discuss their relevance in parasitoid host-seeking behaviour and host conspecific interaction in M. ruficauda-C. signaticollis system.

Sustainable Control of Taro Beetles via Scoliid Wasps and Metarhizium anisopliae

Taro Scarab beetles (Papuana uninodis, Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) inflict severe damage on important root crops and plants such as Taro or Cocoyam, yam, sweet potatoes, oil palm and coffee tea plants across Africa and Asia resulting in economic hardship and starvation in some nations. Scoliid wasps and Metarhizium anisopliae fungus - bio-control agents; are shown to be able to control the population of Scarab beetle adults and larvae using a newly created simulation model based on non-linear ordinary differential equations that track the populations of the beetle life cycle stages: egg, larva, pupa, adult and the population of the scoliid parasitoid wasps, which attack beetle larvae. In spite of the challenge driven by the longevity of the scarab beetles, the combined effect of the larval wasps and the fungal bio-control agent is able to control and drive down the population of both the adult and the beetle eggs below the environmental carrying capacity within an interval of 120 days, offering the long term prospect of a stable and eco-friendly environment; where the population of scarab beetles is: regulated by parasitoid wasps and beneficial soil saprophytes.

Failure of entomopathogens to control white grubs (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae)

White grubs are the root-feeding larvae of scarab beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae), and they are among the most destructive pests of turfgrass, pastures and horticultural plants in many parts of the world. A two-year field experiment was conducted to control different white grub species in an organically utilised meadow with dry forage conservation. The efficacy of Beauveria brongniartii, Beauveria bassiana, Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki, B. thuringiensis var. tenebrionis and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora was tested against the white grubs in comparison with untreated control (only water suspension was used). The application of biological control agents was conducted twice (April and August). Our observations show that several biological control agents are capable of controlling the populations of the first and second instar larvae of different scarab grub species. The efficacy of most biological control agents, however, declines when larvae reach the third instar stage. The most promising combination tested in our study is that of entomopathogenic fungi and H. bacteriophora for controlling the first- and second-stage instar larvae. In addition, the summer application proved to be more suitable for control of the first-stage instar larvae than the spring application.

Do eucalypt plantation management practices create understory reservoirs of scarab beetle pests in the soil?

Eucalypt management practices can affect the population dynamics of defoliating insects. To date, research has focused on how these practices alter eucalypt physiology and chemistry, which in turn affect canopy herbivores. Management practices such as irrigation and fertilisation, however, could also shape the understory plant community and potentially improve habitats for grass root-feeding scarab beetle larvae that later can become defoliators as adults. Using a large scale factorial field experiment comprising 2560 Eucalyptus saligna, we investigated the effects of irrigation and fertilisation on the understory ecology of a eucalypt plantation. We specifically focussed on grass communities and populations of scarab beetles and their natural enemies (entomopathogenic nematodes, EPNs). Irrigation and fertilisation increased grass coverage by 40% and 42%, respectively, and affected grass species composition. In particular, fertilisation favoured colonisation with C3 grasses (e.g. Microlaena stipoides) that have higher nitrogen concentrations over lower quality C4 grasses (e.g. Setaria incrassata). Fertilisation increased the nitrogen concentration of grasses by 30% on average. Scarab abundance increased by 52% in fertilised plots, potentially due to higher nutritional quality of host plants and the dominance of nutritionally superior species. Irrigation increased soil water content, but did not promote scarab larvae abundance. The presence of EPNs, however, was 78% higher in irrigated plots, which suggests scarab larvae populations may have been controlled by EPNs. This study illustrates how plantation management practices can affect understory communities of both plants and soil invertebrates with potential for creating ‘reservoirs’ of scarab beetle pests.

Combining molecular and morphological approaches to differentiate the pest Costelytra zealandica (White) (Coleoptera: Scarabeidae: Melolonthinae) from the non-pest Costelytra brunneum (Broun) at the larval stage

The frequently strong morphological similarities that exist between the larvae of congeneric scarab beetles are likely to lead to misidentification of field-collected specimens of sympatric species. This is the case for the New Zealand endemic pasture pest Costelytra zealandica (White, 1846) (Scarabaeidae: Melolonthinae) and the closely related non-pest species C. brunneum (Broun, 1880), where a taxonomic key is only available for C. zealandica and does not allow the distinction between the two species. Mistaken identification and sampling of such fundamentally different organisms during ecological and/or behavioural studies could lead to invalid interpretations and misinformed decisions in the establishment of pest control programs. Molecular-based species identification is nowadays recognised as an effective way to identify cryptic species using barcoding regions of the genome. In this paper, we coupled this genetic approach with traditional scarab taxonomy (i.e. morphology of the raster, mandibles, labrum and epipharynx) to detect the morphological characteristics that allow for a rapid and accurate differentiation between the final instar of C. zealandica and C. brunneum larvae. We found out that as few as three characters allowed an accurate identification and that the morphology of the septula of the raster itself was enough to assist with a preliminary differentiation of the two species in the field.

Acute Toxicity of Plant Essential Oils to Scarab Larvae (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) and Their Analysis by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry

Larvae of scarab beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) are important contaminant and root-herbivore pests of ornamental crops. To develop alternatives to conventional insecticides, 24 plant-based essential oils were tested for their acute toxicity against third instars of the Japanese beetle Popillia japonica Newman, European chafer Rhizotrogus majalis (Razoumowsky), oriental beetle Anomala orientalis (Waterhouse), and northern masked chafer Cyclocephala borealis Arrow. Diluted solutions were topically applied to the thorax, which allowed for calculating LD50 and LD90 values associated with 1 d after treatment. A wide range in acute toxicity was observed across all four scarab species. Of the 24 oils tested, allyl isothiocyanate, cinnamon leaf, clove, garlic, and red thyme oils exhibited toxicity to all four species. Allyl isothiocyanate was the most toxic oil tested against the European chafer, and among the most toxic against the Japanese beetle, oriental beetle, and northern masked chafer. Red thyme was also comparatively toxic to the Japanese beetle, oriental beetle, European chafer, and northern masked chafer. Interspecific variability in susceptibility to the essential oils was documented, with 12, 11, 8, and 6 of the 24 essential oils being toxic to the oriental beetle, Japanese beetle, European chafer, and northern masked chafer, respectively. Analysis of the active oils by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry revealed a diverse array of compounds, mostly consisting of mono- and sesquiterpenes. These results will aid in identifying active oils and their constituents for optimizing the development of plant essential oil mixtures for use against scarab larvae.

Sensing the underground--ultrastructure and function of sensory organs in root-feeding Melolontha melolontha (Coleoptera: Scarabaeinae) larvae.

IntroductionBelow ground orientation in insects relies mainly on olfaction and taste. The economic impact of plant root feeding scarab beetle larvae gave rise to numerous phylogenetic and ecological studies. Detailed knowledge of the sensory capacities of these larvae is nevertheless lacking. Here, we present an atlas of the sensory organs on larval head appendages of Melolontha melolontha. Our ultrastructural and electrophysiological investigations allow annotation of functions to various sensory structures.ResultsThree out of 17 ascertained sensillum types have olfactory, and 7 gustatory function. These sensillum types are unevenly distributed between antennae and palps. The most prominent chemosensory organs are antennal pore plates that in total are innervated by approximately one thousand olfactory sensory neurons grouped into functional units of three-to-four. In contrast, only two olfactory sensory neurons innervate one sensillum basiconicum on each of the palps. Gustatory sensilla chaetica dominate the apices of all head appendages, while only the palps bear thermo-/hygroreceptors. Electrophysiological responses to CO2, an attractant for many root feeders, are exclusively observed in the antennae. Out of 54 relevant volatile compounds, various alcohols, acids, amines, esters, aldehydes, ketones and monoterpenes elicit responses in antennae and palps. All head appendages are characterized by distinct olfactory response profiles that are even enantiomer specific for some compounds.ConclusionsChemosensory capacities in M. melolontha larvae are as highly developed as in many adult insects. We interpret the functional sensory units underneath the antennal pore plates as cryptic sensilla placodea and suggest that these perceive a broad range of secondary plant metabolites together with CO2. Responses to olfactory stimulation of the labial and maxillary palps indicate that typical contact chemo-sensilla have a dual gustatory and olfactory function.

Humic substance-mediated Fe(III) reduction by a fermenting Bacillus strain from the alkaline gut of a humus-feeding scarab beetle larva

Humus-feeding macroinvertebrates play an important role in the transformation of soil organic matter. Their diet contains significant amounts of redox-active components such as iron minerals and humic substances. In soil-feeding termites, acid-soluble Fe(III) and humic acids are almost completely reduced during gut passage. Here, we show that the reduction of Fe(III) and humic acids takes place also in the alkaline guts of scarab beetle larvae. Sterilized gut homogenates of Pachnoda ephippiata no longer converted Fe(III) to Fe(II), indicating an essential role of the gut microbiota in the process. From Fe(III)-reducing enrichment cultures inoculated with highly diluted gut homogenates, we isolated several facultatively anaerobic, alkali-tolerant bacteria that were closely related to metal-reducing isolates in the Bacillus thioparans group. Strain PeC11 showed a remarkable capacity for dissimilatory Fe(III) reduction, both at pH 7 and 10. Rates were strongly stimulated by the addition of the redox mediator 2,6-antraquinone disulfonate and by redox-active components in the fulvic-acid fraction of humus. Although the contribution of strain PeC11 to intestinal Fe(III) reduction in P. ephippiata remains to be further elucidated, our results corroborate the hypothesis that the lack of oxygen and the solubilization of humic substances in the extremely alkaline guts of humivorous soil fauna provide favorable conditions for the efficient reduction of Fe(III) and humic substances by a primarily fermentative microbiota.

Chemical interaction between the larva of a dipteran parasitoid and its coleopteran host: A case of exploitation of the communication system during the searching behaviour?

The robber fly Mallophora ruficauda is one of the principal apicultural pests in the Pampas region of Argentina. As adults, the flies prey on honey bees and other insects; while, as larvae, they parasitize scarab beetle larvae. Females of M. ruficauda lay eggs away from the host in tall grasses. After being dispersed by the wind, larvae drop to the ground, where they dig in search of their hosts. It is known that second instar larvae of M. ruficauda exhibit active host searching behaviour towards its preferred host, third instar larva of Cyclocephala signaticollis, using host-related chemical cues. Furthermore, previous works show that these chemical cues are produced in the posterior body half of hosts. However, the precise anatomical origin of these cues and whether they mediate any behaviour of C. signaticollis larvae remains yet unknown. In order to determine the precise origin of the chemical cue, we carried out olfactometer assays with different stimuli of extracts of the posterior C. signaticollis body half. Additionally, we tested whether C. signaticollis is attracted to any of the same extracts as in the previous experiments. We found that both second instar of M. ruficauda and third instar of C. signaticollis are attracted to extracts of the fermentation chamber (proctodeum). This is the first report of attraction of conspecific larvae in scarab beetles. We discuss a possible case of system communication exploitation in an immature parasitoid-host system.

Bionomic data and larval density of Scarabaeidae (Pleurosticti) in sugarcane in the central region of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil

Bionomic data and larval density of Scarabaeidae (Pleurosticti) in sugarcane in the central region of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. Phytophagous larvae of Scarabaeidae cause damage to diverse crops. Information on these pests is scarce; therefore, the objective of this study was to determine biological aspects and larval density of species occurring in an area of sugarcane. The studies were developed in Sidrolândia from April 2009 to March 2010. Scarab beetle larvae were collected in sugarcane roots every fifteen days, taken to the laboratory and reared to obtain the adults and determine biological parameters. A total of 2,656 larvae were collected, being 162 Liogenys fuscus, 120 Cyclocephala verticalis, 37 Cyclocephala forsteri, and 2337 Anomonyx sp. In January, 53.65 larvae m-2 were obtained, and the most abundant species was Anomonyx sp, representing 87.99% of the total larvae collected. From November to March, the greatest densities of Anomonyx were observed in the field. The adults of this species occurred from May to September, and egg laying from September to November. Eggs measured 1.1 x 1.7 mm, and incubation period last 15.4 days. First instar larvae were observed mainly in October; second instar larvae from November to April; and third instar from January to July. Pupae were observed from May to August. The most abundant scarab beetle, Anomonyx sp. in roots of sugarcane presents one generation per year in Sidrolândia, MS.
