"I Told Him That the French Army Being Auxiliary in This Continent, It Was Up to the American General to Give His Orders": The Paradoxes of French Military Operations in America, 1778–1783

Abstract: On 19 October 1781, at the surrender of Yorktown, the Comte de Rochambeau replied to the British general Charles O'Hara, who wanted to give his sword to Rochambeau rather than George Washington, that the French army was only auxiliary on this continent. This reply corresponded exactly to the mission defined at Versailles the previous year. But it is surprising: how can a great military power take orders from a smaller one? The answer lies in the evolution of the practical arrangements for Franco-American military cooperation between 1778 and 1781. France sent large naval and land forces across the Atlantic. But for success to be possible, the French and Americans had to be able to act together, and French sailors and soldiers had to be able to master combined operations.

Formación profesional naval en el estado amazónico

Este artículo tiene como objetivo presentar los esfuerzos que se están haciendo en el Estado de Amazonas para la formación profesional naval, desde 2004 hasta la actualidad. Teniendo en cuenta la situación de que el Amazonas está ubicado entre los más grandes polos navales de Brasil, se hace entonces necesario formar al personal para las demandas de construcción, reparación y mantenimiento de las embarcaciones fluviales en los astilleros. Las alianzas con institutos de educación profesional del gobierno, formaron técnicos en construcción naval y las alianzas con instituciones de enseñanza superior privadas y otras organizaciones no gubernamentales, buscaron formar nuevas visiones para los ingenieros y arquitectos que desconocían el mercado naval. Se presentarán en el artículo los modelos de cursos aplicados y sus respectivos focos, y los resultados de las sinergias con otras instituciones de enseñanza superior, con el mercado, con los astilleros y con los profesionales formados.

Operation Leyte – operational fires

<i>Operational fires are one of most important functions in a synergy effect with other operational functions that contribute to the achievement of targeted operational goals. The main operational goal of the American takeover of the Philippines was cutting Japan’s supply lines. This goal had been achieved primarily by effective planning of operational fires. The Japanese forces were neutralised by air strikes, primarily on air bases and aviation, sea ports and ships and those places where they could provide support to forces in the Philippines. This created conditions for landing in the Philippines. By the successful isolation of the Philippines, the US forces gained an advantage that resulted in landing their troops in the Philippines, and the victory in the largest naval and air battle at that time – the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Th e Japanese desperate attempts to use the kamikazes could not prevent the inevitable, and that was the military defeat of Japan.</i>

Organizing metadata from passive acoustic localizations of marine animals

The Tethys system is a set of schemata designed to organize spatiotemporal data from detection, classification, and localization (DCL) tasks targeting sound producing marine animals. These metadata are based on the analysis of recordings collected through passive acoustic monitoring. Tethys is accompanied by a scientific workbench implementation of the schemata rules. The system is designed to promote the retention and organization of acoustic metadata in a manner that allows long-term retention of detailed DCL outputs. We present recent work on the localization schemata showing the ability to organize localizations from a large naval hydrophone range. The Tethys implementation permits these data to be analyzed in the context of Internet available data products containing oceanographic, atmospheric, and ephemeris data. Moving beyond simple detections, this addition of localizations to Tethys will allow even more powerful interpretation of the spatiotemporal occurrence of marine animals in the context of their ecology.

The Falklands War: the journals of the fleet’s Medical Officers

AbstractIn response to the Argentine invasion of the Falkland Islands in 1982, a large Naval task force was rapidly despatched to the South Atlantic to retake the islands. These ships carried Medical Officers, typically junior doctors who were providing care to their ship’s company whilst they shared their danger and emotions as the conflict evolved. On return they submitted their journals, providing a unique insight into the hasty assembly of the task force, the fight against enemy aircraft, the provision of Naval Gunfire Support (NGS) to the land forces and the repatriation and care of the casualties of war.

Interior Ballistics Two-Phase Reactive Flow Model Applied to Large Caliber Guided Projectile-Gun System

Transient complex phenomena take place in a gun during interior ballistic cycle. Understanding these phenomena clearly and describing the mathematical models accurately are crucial to predict the behavior of gun system considering firing safety and performance.Amathematicalmodel based onEulerian-Eulerian approach for reactive gas-solid flowarising during interior ballistic cycle inside large caliber naval gun guided projectile system was developed. The model included the governing equations of mass, momentum, and energy for both phases as well as the constitutive laws. The system of equations was solved using second-order accurate MacCormack technique. One-dimensional shock tube model was utilized to test the ability of the numerical algorithm in solving the initial boundary value problem for the system of equations with shock wave behavior. The numerical method was verified using exact solution of a test problem. The moving control volume conservation method was used to handle the moving boundary and a self-adapting method was used to expand the computational domain in order to follow the projectile motion. Numerical results were validated with experimental data. The interior ballistics performance of a 130mm naval gun was closely predicted using the presented model and the numerical code.

Large Naval Ship Evaluation Method Attended by Multiple Experts

An integrating, coordinating and optimization for experts’ evaluate opinion method according to naval ship evaluation case study is researched. Ship projects evaluation index system is proposed pointing at large surface naval ship, meanwhile the weights of index of experts’ opinion and ship projects are identified. After combining the actual demand of evaluation with the algorithm, a sequence deviation estimating method is formed for estimating the difference between individual and group opinions. Thus a naval ship evaluation platform is proposed which could integrate, coordinate and optimize expert's opinion effectively. Calculation shows this new method system, which mixed the numerical computing and computer iteration technology together, could meet the actual demand of naval ship evaluation commendably. Not only can it retain each expert's original preference, but also consistent the consulting result rapidly. Thus the new method has great applicability in naval ship evaluating progress, with the ability of solving conflict among the expert group.

Coupled Heat Transfer Analysis of Interlayer Active Cooling Barrel of Large Caliber Gun Based on CFX

Large caliber naval gun weapon system in sustained and rapid firing process, produced high temperature and high pressure gas will form pulsed high temperature flow in barrel, causing the barrel being heated and cooled sharply and then being in bad environment, affecting the life of the barrel. The research object of this paper is based on 155mm naval gun, to utilize the theories of fluid mechanics and heat transfer and use ANSYS-CFX software, to simulate the heat response of the gun’s rifling original portion under interlayer active cooling, and to analyse the effects of structure parameters of interlayer cooling system and flowing parameters of cooling liquid on cooling performance using the principle of heat transfer enhancement, providing guidance for the optimization of the structure of the interlayer cooling system.

Development of Technologies to Apply Refractory Metals to Large Caliber Gun Bores

To increase the service life of large caliber naval guns, several technologies were evaluated by the Office of Naval Research for their ability to apply a refractory metal bore surface that would survive the severe thermal, chemical and mechanical environment. These technologies were evaluated using gun firing tests designed to produce a bore surface condition that replicated the intended application. Tests were conducted in 45 mm, 76 mm and 155 mm scale with rapid fire conditions evaluated at both 76 mm and 155 mm scale. Where possible the results have been compared to a chrome plated sample subjected to the same firing conditions.

Post-Curing Effects on Marine VARTM FRP Composite Material Properties for Test and Implementation

Structural composites are increasingly being utilized in many large naval and civil structures where it is vital that their long-term performance be predictable and their variability definable over the life of the structure. However, these properties may be influenced by the degree of cure of the resin, particularly for room-temperature-cured systems. Thus, this investigation defines the postcure effects on E-glass/vinyl-ester fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites manufactured using the vacuum-assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) method, which are typical of those used by the US Navy for ship structures. The composites are differentiated by varying levels of postcure temperature and duration, and examined for the effects of advancing cure at various points in the time after postcure. Pseudo-quasi-isotropic [0/+45/90/−45/0]s and angle ply laminate [±45]2s samples from each level of postcure are examined at 1, 10, 30, 100, and 300 days after postcure in order to track strength, stiffness, failure strain, creep, and fatigue performance as functions of time. In parallel, the matrix polymer is inspected using FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) to directly assess the degree of conversion. Dynamic mechanical analysis and shrinkage measurements are also undertaken to assess the Tg and the amount of shrinkage undergone during post-curing, as well as the advancing of the level of cure during the prescribed aging time. Results suggest that the degree of conversion is limited to 80% for the vinyl-ester oligomer and 90–95% for styrene following a postcure of 93°C. It is observed that after 300 days of ambient storage the nonpostcured samples approach the degree of conversion exhibited by those postcured at 93°C, as measured by FTIR. Resin dominated quasi-static properties are greatly affected by the degree of cure, whereas fiber dominated properties are not. Where the degree of cure is comparatively low, viscoelastic properties cause greater changes in creep response as well as influencing fatigue performance.

Design scheme of new type shell raising and feeding system of medium-large caliber naval gun

The medium — large caliber naval gun is still playing an important role in modern war. The development of highly automatic Shell Raising and Feeding System (SRFS) in the world has been briefly outlined. Several typical SRFS of medium-large caliber naval guns have been analyzed. A re-design of the system is introduced, in which systematic design method has been used to demonstrate its feasibility. The design goal of the system is to realize rapid shell feeding, with application to many types of shells, quick change of shell types, accurate and reliable feeding operation, simple mechanical structure and easy realization of shell withdrawing.

Maritime peace support operations in the Mediterranean

In spite of the significance of internationally‐legitimized peace support operations in the Mediterranean area since the second world war, the historical record testifies to the absence of intra‐Mediterranean security co‐operation. The functional attributes of maritime forces in facilitating co‐operative behaviour would appear to offer a means to overcome this. Currently, however, the prospects for co‐operation at sea continue to be limited by divergent political interests and structural factors such as the extra‐regional linkages of the largest naval powers, imbalances in naval strength and capability and the fragility of intra‐Mediterranean security frameworks. Steps to improve trans‐ and intra‐Mediterranean relations through participation in peace support operations are perhaps more likely to be achieved with regard to land‐based activities than at sea, given the growing involvement of Jordan and some of the Maghreb states in UN land operations. On the other hand, the potential for joint ocean management and constabulary co‐operation in non‐military security spheres could be exploited, leading in the longer term to confidence building and increased military transparency.

Drive-up prescription refill service at a large Navy medical facility

A drive-up prescription refill service at a large naval medical facility is described. A pharmacy drive-up refill service was created to reduce customer congestion, to reduce demand for parking, and to improve customer service. The drive-up program is staffed by a full-time pharmacy technician, a full-time volunteer, and a part-time pharmacy technician who assists during lunches, breaks, and peak hours. Customers must request refills by telephone, and requests are recorded by a pharmacy answering machine. Recorded requests are transcribed, processed, and checked by a pharmacist in the main pharmacy. Refills ready for pickup are transported to the drive-up site twice daily. If a refill is missing, the customer is asked to park, fill out a missing refill form, and pick up the refill at the main pharmacy. Approximately 700 prescription refills are processed and filled daily at the drive-up service. The addition of a drive-up refill service reduced customer visits to the outpatient pharmacy department by about one third and reduced demand for parking by a projected 360-400 parking spaces per day. The error rate for missing refills is less than 0.5%. The only negative consequence of the drive-up service is less interaction between the customer and the pharmacy staff for counseling. A drive-up refill service at a large naval medical facility reduced customer congestion, reduced parking demand, and improved customer service at the outpatient pharmacy department.

Cancer mortality in U.S. counties with shipyard industries during World War II

Respiratory cancer mortality, 1950–1969, was consistently high in U.S. counties where shipyards were engaged in the construction and repair of large naval and cargo vessels during World War II. Over three-fourths of the shipyard counties had elevated rates (in comparison to rates in counties of similar population size in the same region of the country) for lung and laryngeal cancer among white males, with the excess particularly evident in the South. Mortality from lung cancer was high also among white females, and the rate of increase in both sexes was greater than recorded nationally. In addition, rates for oropharyngeal, esophageal, and gastric cancers tended to be elevated in the shipyard counties, but mortality from other tumors was roughly comparable to national levels. A causal relation to asbestos exposures in shipyards cannot be inferred from this correlational analysis, but the unusual mortality patterns underscore the need for broadly based analytic studies to evaluate the risk of cancer in persons with wartime shipyard employment.

One died suddenly, permitting more complete study of the disease process. The circumstances surrounding the clinical course and final recognition of the disease in these patients have aroused our interest. We would like to transmit that interest to others, for we are certain that the disease is not uncommon and is, at present, resting uneasily under other diagnostic titles. Osgood-Schlatter's disease

Thirteen cases of Osgood-Schlatter's disease seen in a period of nine weeks at a large Naval recruit training center are presented with a report of the x-ray findings and treatment, the latter was instituted while the patients were ambulatory and without restriction of their activity in any way. Forty-six and one-tenth per cent showed subjective improvement under anterior thigh taping as described, 15.4 per cent were not improved, 15.4 per cent were made worse and in 23.6 per cent we were unable to follow the patients. A roentgenographic classification is suggested and a rough estimate of the incidence of Osgood-Schlatter's disease among young males is submitted.

Radiographic Diagnosis of Prolapsed Redundant Gastric Mucosa into the Duodenum, with Remarks on the Clinical Significance and Treatment

Prolapses of redundant or hypertrophied gastric mucosa into the duodenum occur frequently enough that they should be recognized and their clinical significance properly evaluated. Experience in the past few years indicates that the filling defects thus produced occasionally are misinterpreted and confused with those due to duodenal ulcers, duodenitis, or similar disorders. Furthermore, when such prolapses are present, the tendency of some physicians has been to regard the condition as of no clinical significance. In the U. S. Navy, the diagnosis of duodenal ulcer is a serious matter, as it involves decisions regarding promotion, type of duty, or even separation from the service. On the other hand, a man incapacitated by gastric distress from a prolapse of the gastric mucosa, with or without the complications of hemorrhage or obstruction, can be rehabilitated by surgical measures and returned to active duty.
