Deep learning image burst stacking to reconstruct high-resolution ground-based solar observations

Large aperture ground-based solar telescopes allow the solar atmosphere to be resolved in unprecedented detail. However, ground-based observations are inherently limited due to Earth's turbulent atmosphere, requiring image correction techniques. Recent post-image reconstruction techniques are based on using information from bursts of short-exposure images. Shortcomings of such approaches are the limited success, in case of stronger atmospheric seeing conditions, and computational demand. Real-time post-image reconstruction is of high importance to enabling automatic processing pipelines and accelerating scientific research. In an attempt to overcome these limitations, we provide a deep learning approach to reconstruct an original image burst into a single high-resolution high-quality image in real time. We present a novel deep learning tool for image burst reconstruction based on image stacking methods. Here, an image burst of 100 short-exposure observations is reconstructed to obtain a single high-resolution image. Our approach builds on unpaired image-to-image translation. We trained our neural network with seeing degraded image bursts and used speckle reconstructed observations as a reference. With the unpaired image translation, we aim to achieve a better generalization and increased robustness in case of increased image degradations. We demonstrate that our deep learning model has the ability to effectively reconstruct an image burst in real time with an average of 0.5 s of processing time while providing similar results to standard reconstruction methods. We evaluated the results on an independent test set consisting of high- and low-quality speckle reconstructions. Our method shows an improved robustness in terms of perceptual quality, especially when speckle reconstruction methods show artifacts. An evaluation with a varying number of images per burst demonstrates that our method makes efficient use of the combined image information and achieves the best reconstructions when provided with the full-image burst.

Characterizing Long-term Astroclimate Parameters at the Muztagh-Ata Site in the Pamir Plateau with ERA5 and MERRA-2 Data

Abstract The Muztagh-Ata site, an excellent high-altitude ground-based astronomical observing site was discovered and monitored in the eastern part of the Pamir Plateau in the southwestern Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China. This site has been systematically monitored using various observational parameters since the spring of 2017. Yet, the site lacks long-term monitoring and statistical characterization of key variables such as: precipitable water vapour (PWV) and air temperature. These factors directly influence whether a site is suitable for hosting large ground-based telescopes across optical, infrared, submillimeter, and millimeter wavelengths in later stages. In this study, we utilized atmospheric reanalysis datasets from the Modern-Era Retrospective analysis for Research and Applications, Version 2 (MERRA-2) and ERA5, the fifth edition of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). These datasets were combined with local observations from the weather station at the Muztagh-Ata site. Following the validation of ground-based and satellite data, we conducted a comparative analysis of PWV and temperature trends at the Muztagh-Ata site over a period of 24 years. The weighted annual mean nighttime temperature and PWV increase at rates of 0.18 ∼ 0.38 ○C decade−1 and 0.02 ∼ 0.15 mm decade−1, respectively. The nighttime PWV slightly decrease during the winter with rates of −0.01 ∼ −0.03 mm decade−1. This findings reveal that the PWV and temperature variation patterns at the Muztagh-Ata site are consistently stable, particularly in the results derived from the ERA5 dataset. The comprehensive conditions at this site are highly suitable and advantageous for hosting large optical, infrared, submillimeter, and millimeter wavelengths telescope installations.

High-contrast, High-angular-resolution Optical Speckle Imaging: Uncovering Hidden Stellar Companions

We explore the possibility of detecting very faint, very close-in stellar companions using large aperture ground-based telescopes and the technique of optical speckle imaging. We examine the state of high-angular-resolution speckle imaging and contrast levels being achieved using current speckle cameras on the Gemini 8 m telescope. We then explore the use of the modern image reconstruction technique—multiframe blind deconvolution (MFBD)—applied to speckle imaging from the Gemini 8 m telescope. We show that MFBD allows us to measure the flux ratio of the imaged stars to high accuracy and the reconstructed images yield higher precision astrometry. Both of these advances provide a large refinement in the derived astrophysical parameters compared with current Fourier techniques. MFBD image reconstructions reach contrast levels of ∼5 × 10−3, near the diffraction limit, to ∼10−4 about 1.″0 away. At these deep contrast levels with angular limits starting near the 8 m diffraction limit (∼20 mas), most stellar companions to a solar-like stars can be imaged in the optical to near-IR bandpass (320–1000 nm). “To Xanadu we go...”—adapted from S. Reference optical turbulence characteristics at the Large Solar Vacuum Telescope site

Abstract Large ground-based solar telescopes are equipped with adaptive optics systems to correct wavefront distortions induced in the turbulent atmosphere. The design of the adaptive optics system strongly depends on the vertical profiles of the optical turbulence. In particular, the characteristics of the optical turbulence determine the design of tomographic adaptive optics systems, which provide image correction within a wide field of view. In the article, a new method to estimate reference optical turbulence characteristics from Era-5 reanalysis assimilated data is presented. This method is based on the dependence of the air refractive index structure constant $C_n^2$ on the vertical shears of wind speed as well as the outer scale of turbulence L0. The L0 parameter is estimated by minimization of the dispersion between the modeled and measured values of the refractive index structure constant $C_n^2$ within the surface layer. For the first time, parametrization coefficients and reference profiles of optical turbulence averaged for the period 1940–2022 are calculated for the Large Solar Vacuum Telescope (LSVT) site. The calculated optical turbulence profiles are representative; these profiles correspond to typical changes of the measured values of the Fried parameter, the isoplanatic angle, and the outer scale of turbulence at the LSVT site. The model turbulence profiles are verified taking into account the Shack–Hartmann wavefront sensor measurements at the LSVT. The higher accuracy of estimation of the optical turbulence characteristics makes it possible to refine parameters relevant to the LSVT adaptive optics system. The obtained results can be used in order to develop high-resolution solar adaptive optics technologies as applied to ground-based telescopes including those using the principles of atmospheric tomography.

Mid-infrared Fine Structure Lines from the Galactic Warm Ionized Medium

The Warm Ionized Medium (WIM) hosts most of the ionized gas in the Galaxy and occupies perhaps a quarter of the volume of the Galactic disk. Decoding the spectrum of the Galactic diffuse ionizing field is of fundamental interest. This can be done via direct measurements of ionization fractions of various elements. Based on current physical models for the WIM we predicted that mid-IR fine structure lines of Ne, Ar and S would be within the grasp of the Mid-Infrared Imager-Medium Resolution Spectrometer (MIRI-MRS), an Integral Field Unit (IFU) spectrograph, aboard the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Motivated thus we analyzed a pair of commissioning data sets and detected [Ne ii] 12.81 μm, [S iii] 18.71 μm and possibly [S iv] 10.51 μm. The inferred emission measure for these detections is about 10 cm−6 pc, typical of the WIM. These detections are broadly consistent with expectations of physical models for the WIM. The current detections are limited by uncorrected fringing (and to a lesser extent by baseline variations). In due course, we expect, as with other IFUs, the calibration pipeline to deliver photon-noise-limited spectra. The detections reported here bode well for the study of the WIM. Along most lines-of-sight hour-long MIRI-MRS observations should detect line emission from the WIM. When combined with optical observations by modern IFUs with high spectral resolution on large ground-based telescopes, the ionization fraction and temperature of neon and sulfur can be robustly inferred. Separately, the ionization of helium in the WIM can be probed by NIRspec. Finally, joint JWST and optical IFU studies will open up a new cottage industry of studying the WIM on arcsecond scales.

Enhancing the Capability of Future Medium-size Telescopes: First Light of the SALTO Demonstrator

The adaptive optics (AO) technology is crucial to achieve the full potential of ground-based telescopes. Over the last three decades, the world has witnessed the successful advent and operation of AO systems on large ground-based telescopes. The complexity and cost of AO systems have largely gone down in the last decade thanks to advances in deformable mirror, wavefront sensor, and real-time computing technologies. Here, we present a robust Rayleigh scattered laser-guided single conjugated adaptive optics system called SALTO, which was designed, built, and tested in the Belgian countryside on a 1-meter class telescope. This project aims to demonstrate the possibility of rejuvenating the scientific goals of medium-class telescopes (1-3 m) with AO technology, as well as to enable optical telecommunication from relatively poor observing sites. This paper discusses the overview of the design, integration and calibration of SALTO. It concludes with the presentation of successful on-sky results at 1.55 μm under 2-3" seeing.

Design and Cryogenic Performance of a Hexapod Platform for a Large Ground-based Wide Field Survey Telescope

The thermal gradient is an important factor that causes degradation to the image quality of telescopes. In order to ensure the accurate alignment of the primary focus unit and the primary mirror, the hexapod platform (as a corrector) is investigated in this paper. First, a ground-based telescope with 2.5 m aperture and 3.5 deg field of view is described. The telescope is under construction, and it is expected to be finished in 2023. Second, the hexapod platform with flexure hinges utilized to adjust the primary focus unit is proposed, which is applied as a corrector. Then, the inverse kinematics of the platform is established and an open-loop control system is built based on it. Finally, the cryogenic performance test for the hexapod platform is performed. The experimental results show that the resolution and repeatability of the translation for the hexapod platform can be achieved at the micrometer level. The resolution and repeatability of the rotation can be achieved at the arc-second level. Therefore, the cryogenic performance of the hexapod platform can meet the optical imaging requirements of the wide-field ground-based telescope. The kinematic analysis and cryogenic performance tests in the paper provide a technical reference for the precise alignment of the primary focus unit and the primary mirror, which can improve the imaging quality of the telescope.

Optique adaptative : correction des effets de la turbulence atmosphérique sur les images astronomiques

Today, adaptive optics (AO) is installed on all very large astronomical telescopes. It allows to overcome the limitation in angular resolution imposed on large ground-based telescopes by the atmospheric turbulence perturbations. This review paper presents the state of the art of the field for astronomical applications. It gives the principles of AO and describes its main components which are the deformable mirrors, the wavefront sensors and the control algorithms. The paper also presents the main recent achievements and ongoing projects. First, for the direct imaging of extra-solar planets by extreme AO and coronography, taking as example the SPHERE instrument. Then to solve the problem of the very limited sky coverage by using laser guide star and to extend the AO correction beyond the isoplanatic patch. Thus, the various laser-assisted tomographic AO concepts are presented with examples of each realization as for the laser tomography AO, the multi-conjugate AO and the multi-object AO. Finally, the challenges of the new generation of giant telescopes are discussed at the end of the paper with a particular focus on the European Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) project.

Research on piston error sensing for segmented mirrors under atmospheric turbulence.

Large aperture ground-based segmented telescopes typically use electrical edge sensors to detect co-phase errors. However, complex observing environments can lead to zero-point drift of the edge sensors, making it challenging to maintain the long-term co-phase of the segmented primary mirror using only edge sensors. Therefore, employing optical piston error detection methods for short-term calibration of edge sensors can address the issue of zero-point drift in the sensors. However, atmospheric turbulence can affect calibration accuracy based on the observational target. To achieve high-precision calibration of electrical edge sensors, this study investigates the impact of atmospheric turbulence on optical piston error detection. Based on simulated results, it is found that the actual measured piston error in the presence of atmospheric turbulence is the difference between the average phases of the two segments. Subsequently, optical piston error detection experiments were conducted in a segmented mirror system under simulated turbulent conditions with varying turbulence intensities. Experimental studies have shown that the detection accuracy of the optical method is almost the same as without turbulence when using a detection aperture size that is 0.82 times the atmospheric coherence length and an exposure time of at least 40 ms. The root mean square of the cross-calibration is better than 3nm. These experimental results indicate that under conditions of good atmospheric seeing, the optical piston error detection method can meet the short-term calibration requirements of edge sensors by setting reasonable detection area size and exposure time. It may even be possible to directly use optical detection methods to replace edge sensors for real-time detection of piston errors.

Non-modulated pyramid wavefront sensor

Context.The diffusion of adaptive optics systems in astronomical instrumentation for large ground-based telescopes is rapidly increasing and the pyramid wavefront sensor is replacing the Shack–Hartmann as the standard solution for single conjugate adaptive optics systems. The pyramid wavefront sensor is typically used with a tip-tilt modulation to increase the linearity range of the sensor, but the non-modulated case is interesting because it maximizes the sensor sensitivity. The latter case is generally avoided for the reduced linearity range that prevents robust operation in the presence of atmospheric turbulence.Aims.We aim to solve part of the issues of the non-modulated pyramid wavefront sensor by reducing the model error in the interaction matrix. We linearize the sensor response in the working conditions without extending the sensor linearity range.Methods.We developed a new calibration approach to model the response of pyramid wave front sensor in partial correction, whereby the working conditions in the presence of residual turbulence are considered.Results.We use in simulations to show how the new calibration approach allows for the pyramid wave front sensor without modulation to be used to sense and correct atmospheric turbulence and we discuss when this case is preferable over the modulated case.

PyTANSPEC: A data reduction package for TANSPEC

TIFR-ARIES Near Infrared Spectrometer (TANSPEC) instrument provides simultaneous wavelength coverage from 0.55 to 2.5 $$\mu $$ m, mounted on India’s largest ground-based telescope, 3.6-m Devasthal Optical Telescope at Nainital, India. The TANSPEC offers three modes of observations, imaging with various filters, spectroscopy in the low-resolution prism mode with derived $$R\sim 100$$ –400 and the high-resolution cross-dispersed mode (XD-mode) with derived median $$R\sim 2750$$ for a slit of width 0.5 arcsec. In the XD-mode, 10 cross-dispersed orders are packed in the $$2048 \times 2048$$ pixels detector to cover the full wavelength regime. As the XD-mode is most utilized as well as for consistent data reduction for all orders and to reduce data reduction time, a dedicated pipeline is essential. In this paper, we present the code for the TANSPEC XD-mode data reduction, its workflow, input/output files and a showcase of its implementation on a particular dataset. This publicly available pipeline pyTANSPEC is fully developed in Python and includes nominal human intervention only for the quality assurance of the reduced data. Two customized configuration files are used to guide the data reduction. The pipeline creates a log file for all the fit files in a given data directory from its header, identifies correct frames (science, continuum and calibration lamps) based upon the user input, offers an option to the user for eyeballing and accepting/removing of the frames, does the cleaning of raw science frames and yields final wavelength calibrated spectra of all orders simultaneously.

Tentative detection of titanium oxide in the atmosphere of WASP-69 b with a 4m ground-based telescope

ABSTRACT Transiting planets provide unique opportunities for the atmospheric characterization of exoplanets as they can reveal composition and the temperature structures at the day–night terminator regions in planetary atmospheres, and help understand the atmospheric process and formation environments of exoplanets. Here, we present the optical transmission spectroscopic study of an inflated Saturn-mass planet WASP-69 b, obtained by the 4m ground-based telescope Southern Astrophysical Research Telescope (SOAR). We obtain spectroscopic transit light curves in 20 passbands from 502 to 890 nm, and fit them using Gaussian processes and an analytical transit model to obtain independent transit depths for each. The derived transmission spectrum of WASP-69 b shows a slope with absorption depth increasing towards blue wavelengths, indicating a Rayleigh scattering in the atmosphere consistent with previous works. The retrieval analysis yields a tentative detection of TiO absorption feature in the transmission spectrum. We present the first results from the SOAR telescope to characterize exoplanetary atmospheres proving its capability and precision for hot Jupiters around bright stars in an area dominated by results from large ground-based telescopes or space telescopes.

Parameter Optimization of RB-SiC Polishing by Femtosecond Laser

Reaction-boned silicon carbide (RB-SiC) is considered a new material for large lightweight ground-based space telescopes due to its high specific stiffness, low thermal deformation, and excellent optical quality. The excellent mechanical properties of RB-SiC result in the low efficiency of traditional polishing and mechanical polishing. In this paper, a polishing method for RB-SiC based on a femtosecond laser is proposed to improve surface quality. A theoretical heat conduction model was established in the process of femtosecond laser irradiation of SiC. We analyzed the ablation type and calculated the single-pulse ablation threshold of SiC, which verified the feasibility of femtosecond laser polishing. Further, the effects of polishing parameters on the polished surface quality were analyzed by a series of experiments, and the optimal parameters were selected. It was observed to improve polishing efficiency and can replace the intermediate steps of traditional mechanical polishing.

Image Quality Specification for Solar Telescopes

Modern large ground-based solar telescopes are invariably equipped with adaptive optics systems to enhance the high angular resolution imaging and spectroscopic capabilities in the presence of the Earth's atmospheric turbulence. The quality of the images obtained from these telescopes can not be quantified with the Strehl ratio or other metrics that are used for nighttime astronomical telescopes directly. In this paper, we propose to use the root mean square (rms) granulation contrast as a metric to quantify the image quality of ground-based solar telescopes. We obtain semi-logarithmic plots indicating the correspondence between the Strehl ratio and the rms granulation contrast for most practical values of the telescope diameters (D) and the atmospheric coherence diameters ($ r_0$), for various levels of adaptive optics compensation. We estimate the efficiency of a few working solar adaptive optics systems by comparing the results of our simulations with the Strehl ratio and rms granulation contrast published by these systems. Our results can be used in conjunction with a plausible 50 system efficiency to predict the lower bound on the rms granulation contrast expected from ground-based solar telescopes.

A Variable Parameter Linear Tracking Differentiator and Its Application in Large Ground-based Telescopes

This paper is concerned with the characteristics of a tracking differentiator (TD) in arranging transition process for the physical system. In order to overcome disadvantages of linear TD (LTD) in practice, a novel variable parameter linear tracking differentiator (VLTD) is proposed. By designing the speediness factor as a function of the tracking error, the VLTD can track a large range of set values with reasonable speed and acceleration. Analysis shows that VLTD can converge to its set value under certain conditions. Meanwhile, the speed and acceleration bounds are added to the VLTD, which guarantees that the proposed transition signal really plays a transitional role. The numerical simulation results emphasize necessity for adding speed and acceleration bounds to the VLTD. By comparing VLTD with the nonlinear TD (NLTD) in the simulations and experiments, VLTD can achieve almost the same performance as the NLTD while it is easier to be implemented.

Hot Exoplanet Atmospheres Resolved with Transit Spectroscopy (HEARTS)

Context. High-resolution transmission spectroscopy has allowed for in-depth information on the composition and structure of exoplanetary atmospheres to be garnered in the last few years, especially in the visible and in the near-infrared. Many atomic and molecular species have been detected thanks to data gathered from state-of-the-art spectrographs installed on large ground-based telescopes. Nevertheless, the Earth daily cycle has been limiting observations to exoplanets with the shortest transits. Aims. The inflated sub-Saturn KELT-11 b has a hot atmosphere and orbits a bright evolved subgiant star, making it a prime choice for atmospheric characterization. The challenge lies in its transit duration – of more than 7 h – which can only be covered partially or without enough out-of-transit baselines when observed from the ground. Methods. To overcome this constraint, we observed KELT-11 b with the HARPS spectrograph in series of three consecutive nights, each focusing on a different phase of the planetary orbit: before, during, and after the transit. This allowed us to gather plenty of out-of-transit baseline spectra, which was critical to build a spectrum of the unocculted star with sufficient precision. Telluric absorption lines were corrected using the atmospheric transmission code MOLECFIT. Individual high-resolution transmission spectra were merged to obtain a high signal-to-noise transmission spectrum to search for sodium in KELT-11 b’s atmosphere through the ~5900 Å doublet. Results. Our results highlight the potential for independent observations of a long-transiting planet over consecutive nights. Our study reveals a sodium excess absorption of 0.28 ± 0.05% and 0.50 ± 0.06% in the Na D1 and D2 lines, respectively. This corresponds to 1.44 and 1.69 times the white-light planet radius in the line cores. Wind pattern modeling tends to prefer day-to-night side winds with no vertical winds, which is surprising considering the planet bloatedness. The modeling of the Rossiter-Mclaughlin effect yields a significantly misaligned orbit, with a projected spin-orbit angle of λ = −77.86−2.26+2.36∘. Conclusions. Belonging to the under-studied group of inflated sub-Saturns, the characteristics of KELT-11 b – notably its extreme scale height and long transit – make it an ideal and unique target for next-generation telescopes. Our results as well as recent findings from HST, TESS, and CHEOPS observations could make KELT-11 b a benchmark exoplanet in atmospheric characterization.

Validation of strategies for coupling exoplanet PSFs into single-mode fibres for high-dispersion coronagraphy

On large ground-based telescopes, the combination of extreme adaptive optics (ExAO) and coronagraphy with high-dispersion spectroscopy (HDS), sometimes referred to as high-dispersion coronagraphy (HDC), is starting to emerge as a powerful technique for the direct characterisation of giant exoplanets. The high spectral resolution not only brings a major gain in terms of accessible spectral features, but also enables a better separation of the stellar and planetary signals. Ongoing projects such as Keck/KPIC, Subaru/REACH, and VLT/HiRISE base their observing strategy on the use of a few science fibres, one of which is dedicated to sampling the planetŠs signal, while the others sample the residual starlight in the speckle field. The main challenge in this approach is to blindly centre the planet’s point spread function (PSF) accurately on the science fibre, with an accuracy of less than 0.1 λ/D to maximise the coupling efficiency. In the context of the HiRISE project, three possible centring strategies are foreseen, either based on retro-injecting calibration fibres to localise the position of the science fibre or based on a dedicated centring fibre. We implemented these three approaches, and we compared their centring accuracy using an upgraded setup of the MITHiC high-contrast imaging testbed, which is similar to the setup that will be adopted in HiRISE. Our results demonstrate that reaching a specification accuracy of 0.1 λ/D is extremely challenging regardless of the chosen centring strategy. It requires a high level of accuracy at every step of the centring procedure, which can be reached with very stable instruments. We studied the contributors to the centring error in the case of MITHiC and we propose a quantification for some of the most impacting terms.

Coronagraphic detection of Earth-like planets with large, actively controlled space telescopes

We explore the capabilities of large segmented telescopes with active and adaptive optics, with a particular focus on a system view, which includes use of approaches that are routine for current large ground-based telescopes. Using a physically motivated order-of-magnitude model, we show that continuous control of telescope misalignments using adjustable optics in an exoplanet imaging instrument significantly relaxes stability requirements for the entire observatory. We start with the recent analysis by Nemati et al., (2020, JATIS 6, id. 039002), which asserts that small monolithic mirrors have an engineering advantage over larger segmented mirrors when it comes to obtaining images stable enough for direct exoplanet imaging and characterization, i.e., picometer stability. When we fold these results into our model of closed-loop operations and properly partition engineering challenges by optimizing error budget allocations, we find that even for the most sensitive modes, allowable drifts are actually of the order of nanometer over an hour, well within easily engineered tolerances. While this order-of-magnitude analysis does not include full end-to-end modeling or proper engineering margins, it showcases the importance of considering continuous wavefront sensing and control when discussing the feasibility of future exoplanet missions. We also quantify how large segmented architectures, in spite of appearing more complex at the observatory level, facilitate closed-loop operations due to their large photon collection abilities. We place our work in the context of larger discussions on aperture size that highlight a more fundamental challenge: the deeper uncertainties in performance of an exo-earth characterizing telescope primarily reside in our knowledge of the frequency of exo-earths; the effects of geological age on the resulting atmospheres; and, most importantly, on the likelihood of detectable life arising on such planets. A mission that sets out to establish whether we are alone among the nearby stars must adopt a mission architecture that is resilient against such intrinsic uncertainties: uncertainties that only direct observations can resolve. Large apertures enabled by segmented telescope designs historically have demonstrated such resilience.

M-type (22) Kalliope: A tiny Mercury

Context. Asteroid (22) Kalliope is the second largest M-type asteroid in the main belt and is orbited by a satellite, Linus. Whereas the mass of Kalliope is already well constrained thanks to the presence of a moon, its volume is still poorly known, leading to uncertainties on its bulk density and internal structure. Aims. We aim to refine the shape of (22) Kalliope and thus its diameter and bulk density, as well as the orbit of its moon to better constrain its mass, hence density and internal structure. Methods. We acquired disk-resolved observations of (22) Kalliope using the VLT/SPHERE/ZIMPOL instrument to reconstruct its three-dimensional (3D) shape using three different modeling techniques. These images were also used together with new speckle observations at the C2PU/PISCO instrument as well as archival images from other large ground-based telescopes to refine the orbit of Linus. Results. The volume of (22) Kalliope given by the shape models, corresponding to D = 150 ± 5 km, and the mass constrained by its satellite’s orbit yield a density of ρ = 4.40 ± 0.46 g cm−3. This high density potentially makes (22) Kalliope the densest known small body in the Solar System. A macroporosity in the 10–25% range (as expected for this mass and size), implies a grain density in the 4.8–5.9 g cm−3 range. Kalliope’s high bulk density, along with its silicate-rich surface implied by its low radar albedo, implies a differentiated interior with metal contributing to most of the mass of the body. Conclusions. Kalliope’s high metal content (40–60%) along with its metal-poor mantle makes it the smallest known Mercury-like body. A large impact at the origin of the formation of the moon Linus is likely the cause of its high metal content and density.

Static and dynamic disturbance compensation for optical misalignment of large ground-based wide field survey telescope.

For large ground-based telescopes, static and dynamic disturbances would greatly degrade the optical performance. This is especially true for wide field survey telescopes with prime focus optics. The estimation of disturbance effects on large telescopes is becoming increasingly important during the design phase. Therefore, a wide field survey telescope with 2.5 m aperture and 3.5 deg field of view is studied in this research. This telescope is under construction now, and its first light is expected at the beginning of 2023. The estimation method for the optical performance under static and dynamic disturbances in the temporal domain and the active compensation method to improve the optical alignment, are investigated, which is a supplement for the simulation in the frequency domain. First, based on the mechanical model, the optical misalignment is established, where the deviation of the primary mirror is obtained from the length gauges and the deviation of the corrector is computed using the fitting method. Second, a method for compensating the static and dynamic disturbances is proposed, improving the optical performance. This method uses the disturbed primary mirror as the reference, and the corrector is actively controlled to align with it. Finally, a series of experimental tests and numerical simulations is conducted. The results show that the mechanical modeling error is within 10% and the maximum optical misalignment is reduced from 12''/0.27 to 0.2''/0.006mm for static disturbance and from 1.3''/0.03 to 0.4''/0.01mm for dynamic disturbance. Through active compensation, the telescope optical property is greatly improved. The modeling method and the simulation process mentioned in this research can also be used in the other relevant fields.
