Tuning Co-Operative Energy Transfer in Copper(I) Complexes Using Two-Photon Absorbing Diimine-Based Ligand Sensitizers.

Photocatalysis mediated by low energy light wavelengths has potential to enable safer, sustainable synthetic methods. A phenanthroline-derived ligand bathocupSani, with a large two-photon absorption (TPA) cross section was used to construct a heteroleptic complex [Cu(bathocupSani)(DPEPhos)]BF4 and a homoleptic complex [Cu(bathocupSani)2]BF4. The ligand and the respective homoleptic complex with copper exhibit two-photon upconversion with an anti-Stokes shift of 1.2 eV using red light. The complex [Cu(bathocupSani)2]BF4 promoted energy transfer photocatalysis enabling oxidative dimerization of benzylic amines, sulfide oxidation, phosphine oxidation, boronic acid oxidation and atom-transfer radical addition.

Renal-Clearable Organic Probes From D-A-D Type Aza-BODIPY Fluorophores for Multiphoton Deep-Brain Imaging.

Bright near-infrared (NIR) fluorescent probes play an important role in in vivo optical imaging. Here, renal-clearable nanodots prepared from Aza-BODIPY are reported fluorophores for multiphoton brain imaging. The design of donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) type conjugated structures endowed the fluorophores with large three-photon absorption cross-section for both 1620 and 2200nm excitation. The side chain modification and lipid encapsulation yield ultrasmall nanodots (≈4nm) and a high fluorescence quantum yield (≈0.35) at 720nm emission in the aqueous phase. The measured three-photon action cross-section of a single Aza-BODIPY fluorophore in the nanodots is ≈30 times higher than the commonly used Sulforhodamine 101 dye. Three-photon deep brain imaging of subcortical structures is demonstrated, reaching a depth of 1900µm below the brain surface in a live mouse study. The nanodots enabled blood flow measurement at a depth of 1617µm using line scanning three-photon microscopy (3PM). This work provides superior fluorescent probes for multiphoton deep-brain imaging.

Near-Infrared Emissive π-Conjugated Oligomer Nanoparticles for Three- and Four-Photon Deep-Brain Microscopic Imaging Beyond 1700 nm Excitation.

High-resolution visualization of the deep brain is still a challenging and very significant issue. Multiphoton microscopy (MPM) holds great promise for high-spatiotemporal deep-tissue imaging under NIR-III and NIR-IV excitation. However, thus far, their applications have been seriously restricted by the scarcity of efficient organic probes. Herein, we designed and synthesized two donor-acceptor-donor-type conjugated small molecules (TNT and TNS) for in vivo mouse deep-brain imaging with three- and four-photon microscopy under 1700 and 2200 nm excitation. With a selenium (Se) substitution, we synthesized two conjugated small molecules to promote their emission into the deep near-infrared region with high quantum yields of 55% and 20% in THF solvent, respectively, and their water-dispersive nanoparticles have relatively large absorption cross-sections in the 1700 and 2200 nm windows, respectively, with good biosafety. With these superiorities, these organic NPs achieve high-resolution deep-brain imaging via three-photon and four-photon microscopy with excitation at 1700 and 2200 nm windows, and 1620 μm deep in the brain vasculature can be visualized in vivo. This study demonstrates the efficiency of NIR-emissive conjugated small molecules for high-performance MPM imaging in the NIR-III and NIR-IV window and provides a route for the future design of organic MPM probes.

Tailoring Plasmonic Nanoheaters Size for Enhanced Theranostic Agent Performance.

The introduction of optimized nanoheaters, which function as theranostic agents integrating both diagnostic and therapeutic processes, holds significant promise in the medical field. Therefore, developing strategies for selecting and utilizing optimized plasmonic nanoheaters is crucial for the effective use of nanostructured biomedical agents. This work elucidates the use of the Joule number (Jo) as a figure of merit to identify high-performance plasmonic theranostic agents. A framework for optimizing metallic nanoparticles for heat generation was established, uncovering the size dependence of plasmonic nanoparticles optical heating. Gold nanospheres (AuNSs) with a diameter of 50 nm and gold nanorods (AuNRs) with dimensions of 41×10 nm were identified as effective nanoheaters for visible (530 nm) and infrared (808 nm) excitation. Notably, AuNRs achieve higher Jo values than AuNSs, even when accounting for the possible orientations of the nanorods. Theoretical results estimate that 41×10 nm gold nanorods have an average Joule number of 80, which is significantly higher compared to larger rods. The photothermal performance of optimal and suboptimal nanostructures was evaluated using photoacoustic imaging and photothermal therapy procedures. The photoacoustic images indicate that, despite having larger absorption cross-sections, the large nanoparticle volume of bigger particles leads to less efficient conversion of light into heat, which suggests that the use of optimized nanoparticles promotes higher contrast, benefiting photoacoustic-based procedures in diagnostic applications. The photothermal therapy procedure was performed on S180-bearing mice inoculated with 41×10 nm and 90×25 nm PEGylated AuNRs. Five minutes of laser irradiation of tumor tissue with 41×10 nm produced an approximately 9.5% greater temperature rise than using 90×25 AuNRs in the therapy trials. Optimizing metallic nanoparticles for heat generation may reduce the concentration of the nanoheaters used or decrease the light fluence for bioscience applications, paving the way for the development of more economical theranostic agents.

Detection of ultra-low concentration NH3, SO2, and NO using UV-DOAS combined with multidimensional spectral fusion

Since nitric oxide (NO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and ammonia (NH3) in flue gas cause severe air pollution, accurate measurements of their concentrations are crucial for optimizing the efficiency of flue gas denitrification in coal-fired power plants and protecting the atmosphere. Due to their large absorption cross sections in the ultraviolet (UV) band, NH3, SO2, and NO in flue gas can be detected by UV Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (UV-DOAS) techniques. However, spectral overlap and noise caused by short optical path limitations in the measurement are the main obstacles to achieve concentration inversion. Here, we propose a multidimensional spectral fusion method one-dimensional convolutional neural network combined with two-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-2D-CNN) with the ability to invert concentration of NH3, SO2 and NO at ppb level with 0.5 m optical-length. To separate the absorption features, one-dimensional spectra are converted into two-dimensional time-frequency plots by continuous wavelet transform (CWT). After denoising the spectra by wavelet thresholding, one-dimensional and two-dimensional spectral features are extracted by 1D-2D-CNN model and fused for inversion. The experimental results show that the proposed system can effectively eliminate interferences from NH3, SO2, and NO, significantly improving the concentration inversion accuracy. The detection limits for NH3, SO2 and NO in the mixture are 0.95 ppb∙m, 6.31 ppb∙m, and 2.53 ppb∙m, respectively, demonstrating that our approach outperforms other reported methods for flue gas analysis. The proposed system is expected to be applied to ammonia slip monitoring of Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) in power plants.

Schottky-Barrier-Free Plasmonic Photocatalysts for Solar-Driven Ammonia Synthesis

Ammonia is not only an indispensable feedstock to produce essential industrial chemicals like fertilizers, but it is also a potential hydrogen energy carrier owing to its high energy density and hydrogen capacity. Currently, most ammonia required for humans comes from the Haber–Bosch process, which contributes more than 90% of the annual global ammonia output. However, the harsh reaction conditions of this process result in serious energy and environmental issues. According to the relevant statistics, the ammonia industry consumes about 2% of the total energy and generates about 1.6% of the total CO2 emission annually in the world.It is therefore crucial to develop a green and sustainable strategy for ammonia synthesis. Among various alternative technologies of the Haber–Bosch process, artificial photosynthesis has attracted wide research interests and has been regarded as a promising, environmentally friendly, and energy-saving process. Photocatalytic ammonia synthesis can utilize renewable solar energy to drive the reaction and operate under mild conditions, which possesses the benefits of the simple reaction system, low cost, and safety. Although numerous photocatalysts have been explored over the past several decades, their activity and efficiency have still been low and far from the practical application requirements. It is therefore a huge challenge to design efficient photocatalysts for ammonia synthesis.Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) has recently drawn enormous attention. LSPR can not only endow plasmonic nanomaterials with large absorption cross-sections and intense local field enhancement but also generate energetic hot electrons and hot holes. Owing to the appealing features of LSPR, plasmonic photocatalysis has shown great potential in ammonia synthesis. Plasmonic photocatalysts are usually composed of noble metals and wide bandgap semiconductors. However, the Schottky barrier will form at the metal–semiconductor interface in such hybrid structures due to the mismatch of the band structures between plasmonic metals and semiconductors. Hence, a large portion of the hot electrons cannot cross the Schottky barrier and get lost in the metal through the recombination with the holes. To overcome the drawbacks caused by the Schottky barrier, it is strongly desirable to develop a new type of plasmonic semiconductor photocatalysts, i.e., Schottky-barrier-free plasmonic photocatalyst.The Schottky-barrier-free plasmonic photocatalysts are usually degenerately doped semiconductors containing lattice oxygen vacancies. They possess high free electron densities and strong plasmon resonance because of the high-level doping, which results in abundant hot charge carriers upon plasmon excitation. Moreover, they also have appropriate surface sites that can adsorb reactant molecules and activate them. The photogenerated plasmonic hot charge carriers can get trapped at the defect sites and thereafter drive redox reactions. Compared with traditional metal–semiconductor hybrid plasmonic photocatalysts, Schottky-barrier-free plasmonic photocatalysts enable hot charge carriers to be transported nearly freely in the material, resulting in high charge utilization and photocatalytic efficiency.We have demonstrated the synthesis of Schottky-barrier-free plasmonic MoO3−x nanospheres (NSs) with remarkably high oxygen vacancy (OV) contents by aerosol-spray. The MoO3−x NSs can achieve efficient ammonia photosynthesis through a “killing two birds with one stone” mechanism. On the one hand, the OVs can serve as chemisorption sites for N2 molecules and participate in their activation. On the other hand, the introduction of OVs generates a large number of free electrons near the conduction band, which induces a broad absorption band from the visible to the NIR region owing to the plasmon resonance. The Schottky-barrier-free nature of this plasmonic semiconductor allows free transportation of the plasmonic hot charge carriers, while the defect states introduced by the OVs can effectively trap the hot electrons to prevent rapid electron–hole recombination. As expected, the as-prepared material exhibits a superior ammonia production rate, with the highest apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 1.24% at 808 nm and an appreciable solar-to-ammonia conversion efficiency (SACE) of 0.057% for NH3 production. Besides MoO3−x , WO3−x is also an excellent candidate for Schottky-barrier-free plasmonic photocatalysts. We have synthesized square WO3−x nanoplates hydrothermally. The WO3-x nanoplates possess regular morphology, wide light absorption, and great ammonia production performance. Furthermore, by introducing doping elements (Mo, V, Fe, Bi) into WO3−x nanoplates, the N2 activation and dissociation can be improved by refining the defect states. The Mo-doped WO3−x nanoplates exhibit the highest ammonia production rate of 145.50 μmol g−1 h−1 with SACE of 0.011% since the Mo species can promote the chemisorption and polarization of N2 molecules and significantly reduce the reaction barrier. Notably, Mo-doped WO3−x nanoplates are a dual-function photocatalyst that can oxidize water to hydrogen peroxide in a stoichiometric ratio while synthesizing ammonia. Figure 1

One- and Two-Photon Photophysical Properties, Ultrafast Dynamics, and DFT Study of Three Modified Zinc Phthalocyanines.

As two-photon absorption (TPA) materials, phthalocyanine molecules have promising application prospects due to their large TPA absorption cross-section, high third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility, and ultrafast response characteristics. In this work, optical properties and the ultrafast response of three modified zinc phthalocyanine molecules (P-HPcZn, Pc-P-Pc, and (DR1)4PcZn) were analyzed. No obvious side-shoulder absorption peaks in the Q-band can be observed from the steady-state absorption spectra of the three molecules, confirming the lack of aggregation products in the solutions of our measurement. Open-aperture Z-scan results show relatively large TPA cross-section values of 136.4 and 55.3 GM for Pc-P-Pc and (DR1)4PcZn, respectively. The nonlinear optical results show that the absorption process observed under the excitation of femtosecond pulses is a reverse saturable absorption (RSA) mechanism. Up-conversion fluorescence spectra of (DR1)4PcZn in THF solution indicate that the fluorescence emission mechanism is TPA. In the study of ultrafast dynamics, the transient absorption spectra were investigated and the decay lifetime of the dynamic traces corresponding to some representative probe wavelengths was obtained through data fitting with a multi-exponential function. Finally, the charge transfer and excited state properties of the modified zinc phthalocyanine molecules were discussed in depth by the DFT method. The energy gaps of P-HPcZn, Pc-P-Pc, and (DR1)4PcZn are 2.16, 1.39, and 2.13 eV, respectively. The results indicate that the Pc-P-Pc of donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) structure has the smallest energy gap as well as the best charge transfer properties.

Distance-Independent Efficiency of Triplet Energy Transfer from π-Conjugated Organic Ligands to Lanthanide-Doped Nanoparticles.

Lanthanide-doped nanoparticles (LnNPs) possess unique optical properties and are employed in various optoelectronic and bioimaging applications. One fundamental limitation of LnNPs is their low absorption cross-section. This hurdle can be overcome through surface modification with organic chromophores with large absorption cross-sections. Controlling energy transfer from organic molecules to LnNPs is crucial for creating optically bright systems, yet the mechanisms are not well understood. Using pump-probe spectroscopy, we follow singlet energy transfer (SET) and triplet energy transfer (TET) in systems comprising different length 9,10-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracene (BPEA) derivatives coordinated onto ytterbium and neodymium-doped nanoparticles. Photoexcitation of the ligands forms singlet excitons, some of which convert to triplet excitons via intersystem crossing when coordinated to the LnNPs. The triplet generation rate and yield are strongly distance-dependent. Following their generation, TET occurs from the ligands to the LnNPs, exhibiting an exponential distance dependence, independent of solvent polarity, suggesting a concerted Dexter-type process with a damping coefficient of 0.60 Å-1. Nevertheless, TET occurs with near-unity efficiency for all BPEA derivatives due to the lack of other triplet deactivation pathways and long intrinsic triplet lifetimes. Thus, we find that close coupling is primarily important to ensure efficient triplet generation rather than efficient TET. Although SET is faster, we find its efficiency to be lower and more strongly distance-dependent than the TET efficiency. Our results present the first direct distance-dependent energy transfer measurements in LnNP@organic nanohybrids and establish the advantage of using the triplet manifold to achieve the most efficient energy transfer and best sensitization of LnNPs with π-conjugated ligands.

The third-order nonlinear optical responses of zinc porphyrin oligomers: Cycles vs linear chains

Porphyrins are widely used as potential nonlinear optical (NLO) materials because of their highly delocalized π electrons and feasible synthesis and functionalization with broad biological applications. A variety of linear and cyclic porphyrin derivatives have been synthesized, and the correlation between their structures and NLO properties awaits being disclosed. In this work, the electronic structures and third-order NLO properties of linear and cyclic butadiyne-linked zinc porphyrin oligomers have been studied by quantum chemical methods and sum-over-states model. The static second hyperpolarizability (<γ0>) increases exponentially with the number of zinc porphyrin units ([<γ0>n] = 0.67[<γ0>1]n2.63, n = 2 ∼ 6) in linear π-conjugated oligomers, and the <γ0> of the linear hexamer is about 74 times that of the monomer. Such enhancement of <γ0> in linear oligomers originates from closely-lying frontier molecular orbitals available for low energy electron excitations and strong charge transfer-based excitations across porphyrins. The <γ0>s of cyclic porphyrins are lower than that of the linear hexamer, though the interaction between the ring and the ligand enhances the <γ0> of some cyclic zinc porphyrin complexes. The large two-photon absorption cross sections confer on these zinc porphyrin derivatives excellent candidates for two-photon absorption applications.

Room Temperature Emission Line Narrowing and Long‐Range Photon Transport in Colloidal Quantum Wells Coupled to Metasurface Resonance

AbstractHighly efficient and spectrally pure single photon sources are desirable in fundamental studies of quantum physics and in many varied applications like in quantum metrology and quantum cryptography. 2D semiconductor colloidal quantum wells (CQWs) are quite appropriate as nanoscale photon sources because of their giant oscillator strengths and large absorption cross sections. The integration of such sources with dielectric metasurfaces exhibiting narrow resonances provides an excellent platform for highly efficient light‐matter interactions and the development of on‐chip light sources with high spectral purity. Here details on the use of capillary filling method are reported to achieve photonic coupling of CQWs to a metasurface resonator (MSR) featuring a square‐lattice geometry of holes on a slab‐waveguide to achieve strongly enhanced and almost spectrally pure emission of ≈3% of the original out‐of‐plane emission line‐width of the quantum emitters at room temperature. Long‐range exciton‐mediated photon transport facilitated by in‐plane slab waveguide modes is demonstrated and a theoretical basis to explain all the experimental data including that in terms of the MSR‐modified Lamb shifts and Purcell decays is provided. The results demonstrate a new platform with emergent photonic properties and suggest possibility of their use in on‐chip photonic quantum information processing.

Molecular engineering of coumarins for enhanced 2-photon absorption property

Abstract A series of coumarin-based quadrupolar and octupolar derivatives containing electron-donating substituents (carbazole or diphenylamine groups) were synthesized. Their photophysical properties were explored in different organic solvents (toluene, dichloromethane, and dimethyl sulfoxide). Each donor group was connected via cyclic stilbene based on coumarin, resulting in compounds with large 2-photon absorption cross-sections.

Evaluation of shielding performance and light emission characteristics of luminescent radiation shields using Gd2O2S

ABSTRACT Gadolinium oxysulfide (Gd2O2S: GOS) has a large absorption cross-section for thermal neutrons and a mass density similar to that of iron used for shielding against X and γ-ray radiation. During GOS scintillator production process, its waste is also generated. If GOS waste can be used as an effective shielding material, it is worthwhile as beneficial use of the waste. We developed a novel radiation-shielding material using GOS waste. The developed shielding material can shield X, γ-rays and thermal neutrons more efficiently than conventional shielding materials and emit visible light due to leaked radiation when the shielding material is damaged, which subsequently be used to check the integrity of shielding using visible light. In this study, two types of shields, concrete and mortar with GOS as the aggregate and epoxy resin with GOS were prototyped and tested for radiation transmission. Results indicate that GOS shielding has a 10% higher shielding ability for X and γ-rays than heavy concrete with iron as aggregate. Additionally, the same shielding effect for thermal neutrons was attained at 1/10 the thickness of heavy concrete. Thus, using GOS waste is not only cost effective but also contributes to a circular economy.

Synchrotron Near-Field Infrared Nanospectroscopy and Nanoimaging of Lithium Fluoride in Solid Electrolyte Interphases in Li-Ion Battery Anodes.

Lithium fluoride (LiF) is a ubiquitous component in the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer in Li-ion batteries. However, its nanoscale structure, morphology, and topology, important factors for understanding LiF and SEI film functionality, including electrode passivity, are often unknown due to limitations in spatial resolution of common characterization techniques. Ultrabroadband near-field synchrotron infrared nanospectroscopy (SINS) enables such detection and mapping of LiF in SEI layers in the far-infrared region down to ca. 322 cm-1 with a nanoscale spatial resolution of ca. 20 nm. The surface sensitivity of SINS and the large infrared absorption cross section of LiF, which can support local surface phonons under certain circumstances, enabled characterization of model LiF samples of varying structure, thickness, surface roughness, and degree of crystallinity, as confirmed by atomic force microscopy, attenuated total reflectance FTIR, SINS, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, high-angle annular dark-field, and scanning transmission electron microscopy. Enabled by this approach, LiF within SEI films formed on Cu, Si, and metallic glass Si40Al50Fe10 electrodes was detected and characterized. The nanoscale morphologies and topologies of LiF in these SEI layers were evaluated to gain insights into LiF nucleation, growth, and the resulting nuances in the electrode surface passivity.

Crystal growth and spectroscopic performances of Dy3+:YPO4 and Dy3+/Tb3+:YPO4 crystal as potential yellow laser gain mediums

Exploring new Dy3+-doped laser gain medium is still a challenge for constructing efficient yellow solid-state laser at current stage. In this paper, high quality Dy3+:YPO4 and Dy3+/Tb3+:YPO4 crystals were grown by the high temperature solution method. The crystal structure, chemical composition, phonon energy, polarized absorption and emission spectra, fluorescence lifetime were investigated. The obtained large FWHMs (6 nm) and absorption cross-sections (3.87×10−21 cm2) of Dy3+:YPO4 and Dy3+/Tb3+:YPO4 crystals at 454 nm indicate that they can be efficiently pumped by the commercial blue laser diodes. J-O intensity (Ω2, Ω4, Ω6), fluorescence branching rate and radiative lifetime of Dy3+ ions were calculated by J-O theory. Benefiting from the appropriate phonon energy, the emission cross-section of Dy3+: YPO4 crystal at 575 nm can reach 5.04×10−21 cm2. Moreover, after co-doping Tb3+ as deactivating ion, the emission cross-section of Dy3+/Tb3+: YPO4 crystal at 575 nm was promoted to 5.98×10−21 cm2 by a resonance energy transfer process between the Dy3+-6H13/2 and Tb3+-7F4. Therefore, both Dy3+:YPO4 and Dy3+/Tb3+:YPO4 crystals are potential candidates for yellow laser gain mediums.

Comparing Pr3+ and Nd3+ for deactivating the Er3+: 4I13/2 level in lanthanum titanate glass

Erbium lanthanum titanate glasses were prepared by levitation melting for the spectroscopic study of ways to promote the mid-infrared fluorescence. Two series of heavily erbium doped glasses (15 wt%) were prepared with the addition of either Pr3+ or Nd3+ in amounts relative to Er3+ of 0.05, 0.1, and 0.2. Both ions quench the lower Er3+ laser level with the Pr3+ doing so more rapidly. Although high co-dopant concentrations result in higher energy transfer, as clearly evidenced in upconversion and downconversion fluorescence measurements, the mid-infrared lifetime also suffers a reduction and, therefore, a balance must be struck in the co-dopant concentration. Lifetime and spectral measurements indicate that, at a fixed relative co-dopant amount, Pr3+ is more effective than Nd3+ at removing the bottleneck of the Er3+ 4I13/2 level. Moreover, consideration of the lifetimes alongside the absorption data of the individual ions indicates that despite the large absorption cross-section of Nd3+ at 808 nm, the concentration needed to yield more absorbed power than utilizing direct 976 nm excitation of Er3+ results in unfavorable lifetimes of the mid-infrared transition. In the end, Pr3+ prevails as the superior co-dopant in terms of the effects on fluorescence lifetimes as well as potential laser system design considerations. In a unique self-doping approach, a reducing melt atmosphere of Ar instead of O2 creates a small fraction of Ti3+. In 5Er2O3-12La2O3-83TiO2 glass, the presence of Ti3+ quenches the 4I13/2 emission about 2.6 times more than the 4I11/2 when lifetimes are compared to an O2 melt environment. As an additional means of increasing the mid-infrared emission, the effect of temperature on the mid- and near- infrared lifetimes of a lightly doped lanthanum titanate composition is investigated between 77-300 K. The mid-infrared lifetime increases by ∼30% while the near-infrared lifetime increases by ∼10%, which suggests in addition to co-doping, active cooling of the gain media will further enhance performance.

Quantifying Förster Resonance Energy Transfer from Single Perovskite Quantum Dots to Organic Dyes.

Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are promising regenerable photoredox catalysts offering broadly tunable redox potentials along with high absorption coefficients. QDs have thus far been examined for various organic transformations, water splitting, and CO2 reduction. Vast opportunities emerge from coupling QDs with other homogeneous catalysts, such as transition metal complexes or organic dyes, into hybrid nanoassemblies exploiting energy transfer (ET), leveraging a large absorption cross-section of QDs and long-lived triplet states of cocatalysts. However, a thorough understanding and further engineering of the complex operational mechanisms of hybrid nanoassemblies require simultaneously controlling the surface chemistry of the QDs and probing dynamics at sufficient spatiotemporal resolution. Here, we probe the ET from single lead halide perovskite QDs, capped by alkylphospholipid ligands, to organic dye molecules employing single-particle photoluminescence spectroscopy with single-photon resolution. We identify a Förster-type ET by spatial, temporal, and photon-photon correlations in the QD and dye emission. Discrete quenching steps in the acceptor emission reveal stochastic photobleaching events of individual organic dyes, allowing a precise quantification of the transfer efficiency, which is >70% for QD-dye complexes with strong donor-acceptor spectral overlap. Our work explores the processes occurring at the QD/molecule interface and demonstrates the feasibility of sensitizing organic photocatalysts with QDs.

Amplified Spontaneous Emission from Electron-Hole Quantum Droplets in Colloidal CdSe Nanoplatelets.

Two-dimensional cadmium selenide nanoplatelets (NPLs) exhibit large absorption cross sections and homogeneously broadened band-edge transitions that offer utility in wide-ranging optoelectronic applications. Here, we examine the temperature-dependence of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) in 4- and 5-monolayer thick NPLs and show that the threshold for close-packed (neat) films decreases with decreasing temperature by a factor of 2-10 relative to ambient temperature owing to extrinsic (trapping) and intrinsic (phonon-derived line width) factors. Interestingly, for pump intensities that exceed the ASE threshold, we find development of intense emission to lower energy in particular provided that the film temperature is ≤200 K. For NPLs diluted in an inert polymer, both biexcitonic ASE and low-energy emission are suppressed, suggesting that described neat-film observables rely upon high chromophore density and rapid, collective processes. Transient emission spectra reveal ultrafast red-shifting with the time of the lower energy emission. Taken together, these findings indicate a previously unreported process of amplified stimulated emission from polyexciton states that is consistent with quantum droplets and constitutes a form of exciton condensate. For studied samples, quantum droplets form provided that roughly 17 meV or less of thermal energy is available, which we hypothesize relates to polyexciton binding energy. Polyexciton ASE can produce pump-fluence-tunable red-shifted ASE even 120 meV lower in energy than biexciton ASE. Our findings convey the importance of biexciton and polyexciton populations in nanoplatelets and show that quantum droplets can exhibit light amplification at significantly lower photon energies than biexcitonic ASE.

High-intensity pulsed-light cultivation of unicellular algae: Photosynthesis continues in the dark

Experiments have shown that photon exploitation efficiency in unicellular algal biomass production under a pulsed-light regime with a high-photon flux is higher than the efficiency under continuous illumination with the same flux. This observation has been explained theoretically to be a consequence of the improved efficiency of exploitation of photons by Photosystem II (PS II) thanks to the combined effect of photon-absorption statistics, a rate-limiting time scale and the size of the PQ pool.Exploiting the same ideas, it is shown in this paper that, under a pulsed-light regime, there is a pulse-time length, for which the average exploitation efficiency of PS II absorbed photons is maximal. Under ideal conditions, this maximum is close to 100%. The optimal pulse-time length is roughly proportional to the size of the PQ pool, NPQ. This is clearly seen for τ (the average time gap between consecutive photons absorbed by the PS II-Chlorophyll antenna) of the order of 1 ms or less (corresponding to a high photon flux and/or a large photon absorption cross-section area of the antenna) and for small NPQ. The width of the plot of efficiency vs. pulse length around the optimum is then small and the optimal pulse length is well defined. As τ is increased beyond 1 or NPQ becomes large, the width grows, allowing for a broad choice of pulse lengths, for which efficiency is very close to the maximum.These observations open the door to future designs of highly productive bioreactors.

Optical properties and simple forcing efficiency of the organic aerosols and black carbon emitted by residential wood burning in rural central Europe

Abstract. Recent years have seen an increase in the use of wood for energy production of over 30 %, and this trend is expected to continue due to the current energy crisis and geopolitical instability. At present, residential wood burning (RWB) is one of the most important sources of organic aerosols (OAs) and black carbon (BC), posing a significant risk to air quality and health. Simultaneously, as a substantial aerosol source, RWB also holds relevance in the context of aerosol radiative effects and climate. While BC is recognized for its large light absorption cross-section, the role of OAs in light absorption is still under evaluation due to their heterogeneous composition and source-dependent optical properties. Existing studies that characterize wood-burning aerosol emissions in Europe primarily concentrate on urban and background sites and focus on BC properties. Despite the significant RWB emissions in rural areas, these locations have received comparatively less attention. The present scenario underscores the imperative for an improved understanding of RWB pollution, aerosol optical properties, and their subsequent connection to climate impacts, particularly in rural areas. We have characterized atmospheric aerosol particles from a central European rural site during wintertime in the village of Retje in Loški Potok, Slovenia, from 1 December 2017 to 7 March 2018. The village experienced extremely high aerosol concentrations produced by RWB and near-ground temperature inversion. The isolated location of the site and the substantial local emissions made it an ideal laboratory-like place for characterizing RWB aerosols with low influence from non-RWB sources under ambient conditions. The mean mass concentrations of OA and BC were 35 µg m−3 (max⁡=270 µg m−3) and 3.1 µg m−3 (max⁡=24 µg m−3), respectively. The mean total particle number concentration (10–600 nm) was 9.9×103 particles cm−3 (max⁡=59×103 particles cm−3). The mean total light absorption coefficients at 370 and 880 nm measured by an AE33 Aethalometer were 120 and 22 Mm−1 and had maximum values of 1100 and 180 Mm−1, respectively. The aerosol concentrations and absorption coefficients measured during the campaign in Loški Potok were significantly larger than reported values for several urban areas in the region with larger populations and a larger extent of aerosol sources. Here, considerable contributions from brown carbon (BrC) to the total light absorption were identified, reaching up to 60 % and 48 % in the near-UV (370 nm) and blue (470 nm) wavelengths. These contributions are up to 3 times higher than values reported for other sites impacted by wood-burning emissions. The calculated mass absorption cross-section and the absorption Ångström exponent for RWB OA were MACOA,370nm=2.4 m2 g−1, and AAEBrC,370-590nm=3.9, respectively. Simple-forcing-efficiency (SFE) calculations were performed as a sensitivity analysis to evaluate the climate impact of the RWB aerosols produced at the study site by integrating the optical properties measured during the campaign. The SFE results show a considerable forcing capacity from the local RWB aerosols, with a high sensitivity to OA absorption properties and a more substantial impact over bright surfaces like snow, typical during the coldest season with higher OA emissions from RWB. Our study's results are highly significant regarding air pollution, optical properties, and climate impact. The findings suggest that there may be an underestimation of RWB emissions in rural Europe and that further investigation is necessary.

Contribution of black carbon and desert dust to aerosol absorption in the atmosphere of the Eastern Arabian Peninsula

Discriminating the absorption coefficients of aerosol mineral dust and black carbon (BC) in different aerosol size fractions is a challenge because of BC's large mass absorption cross-section compared to dust. Ambient aerosol wavelength dependent absorption coefficients (babs) in supermicron and submicron size fractions were determined with a high time resolution. The measurements were performed simultaneously using identical systems at an urban and a regional background site in Qatar. At each site, measurements were taken by co-located Aethalometers, one with a virtual impactor (VI) and the other with a PM1 cyclone to respectively collect super-micron-enhanced and submicron fractions. The combined measurement of aerosol absorption and scattering coefficients enabled the particles to be classified based on their optical properties' wavelength dependence. The classification reveals the presence of BC internally/externally mixed with different aerosols. Helium ion microscopy images provided information concerning the extent of mineral dust in the submicron fraction. The determination of absorption coefficients during dust storms and non-dust periods was used to establish the absorption Ångström exponent for dust and BC. Non-parametric wind regression, potential source contribution function and back-trajectory analysis reveal major regional sources of desert dust associated with north-westerly winds and a minor local dust contribution. In contrast, major BC sources found locally were associated with south-westerly winds with a smaller contribution made by offshore emissions transported by north-easterly and easterly winds. The use of a pair of Aethalometers with VI and PM1 inlets separates contributions of BC and dust to the aerosol absorption coefficient.
