In situ iron coating of amorphous boron and characterization of its energy release behavior

Boron was widely employed as metal fuel in solid propellants for its higher gravimetric and volumetric combustion enthalpies. However, the low melting point and high boiling point of B2O3 on the surface of boron particles significantly hinder its ignition and combustion performance, seriously preventing the full realization of its thermodynamic potential. To address this issue, B@Fe composite fuels with different iron contents from 1.59 % to 7.09 % were prepared via liquid phase reduction in this paper and the quasi-static high temperature oxidation, ignition and combustion reaction characteristics and corresponding mechanism were studied, in order to provide effective modification techniques in supporting the large-scale engineering application of boron as metal fuel. The study results show that B@Fe can effectively reduce the ignition temperature and maximum heat flow temperature of amorphous boron, and increase the maximum mass gain rate. The ignition temperature and maximum heat flow temperature have an exponential function with the iron coating content. Iron coated amorphous boron can effectively shorten the laser ignition delay time by more than 50 %, and significantly change the flame structure, flame evolution process and combustion duration. Both amorphous boron and iron-coated amorphous boron flame showed a multi-layer structure, including the outer green flame, the middle yellow flame and the central incandescent flame. However, with the increase of the iron coating content, the flame height increased from 5.5 cm to 6.3 cm, the flame structure changed from mushroom type to triangle type, and the central incandescent flame area increased significantly. The equivalent combustion duration increased from 975 ms to 1997 ms, and the flame temperature increased from 1288 to 1505 °C. The emission spectra of BO2 and BO lines are captured during combustion. B@Fe with the increase of iron content, a large number of small diameter micropores appear in the condensed combustion products(CCPs) of composite fuels, and a grid-like structure was formed. With the increase of iron coating content, the boron content of condensed combustion products decreases, and the oxygen content increases. The main components of CCP include B, B2O3, B6O, FeB, Fe2B and Fe3B. Based on the ignition combustion experiment of B@Fe composite fuel, ignition combustion analysis model of B@Fe composite fuel was established.

Size effect modellings of axial compressive failure of RC columns at low temperatures

This paper applied a thermal-mechanical sequential coupled mesoscopic simulation method to explore the axial compression performance and the corresponding size effect of Reinforced Concrete Columns confined by Stirrups (i.e., RCCS) at low temperatures, with considering the interaction between concrete meso-components and steel bars as well as the low-temperature effect of mechanical parameters. Based on the heat conduction analysis, the axial compression mechanical failure behavior of RCCS with four structural sizes (i.e., 267 × 267 × 801, 400 × 400 × 1200, 600 × 600 × 1800 and 800 × 800 × 2400 mm) and two stirrup ratios (i.e., 1.26% and 2.89%) at different temperatures (i.e., T = 20, −30, −60 and −90°C) was subsequently simulated. The effects of temperature, structural size and volume stirrup ratio on axial compression properties were quantitatively discussed. The results showed that the peak strength of RCCS increased with the decreasing temperature, and the smaller-sized RCCS showed a stronger effect of low-temperature enhancement. Both the residual strength and displacement ductility coefficient decreased with the decreasing temperature. The peak strength, residual strength and displacement ductility coefficient of RCCS decreased with the increasing structural size, showing obvious size effects. The size effect on peak strength increased with the decreasing temperature, (the maximum increase was nearly 140%), but the size effect on displacement ductility coefficient decreased (the maximum decrease was nearly 70%). The peak strength, residual strength and ductility were enhanced with the increasing volume stirrup ratio, which was helpful to reduce the influence of size effect. Finally, an improved size effect theoretical model was proposed, which can effectively predict the axial compressive strength of RCCS with different structural sizes and stirrup ratios at room and low temperatures. The present research results can provide reference for the large-scale engineering application of RCCS in low-temperature environments.

Research on Activation Mechanisms In Situ during Rapid Desorption of Mercury-Absorbing Activated Coke by the Heating Method.

The adsorption of active coke is a good method to control mercury in coal-fired power plants, but spent powdered activated coke (SPAC) will cause secondary pollution and waste of resources if it is not properly treated. The purpose of this study was to explore the desorption performance of SPAC when heated in a drop-tube reactor under different atmospheres. The carbon consumption was 0.13%, 0.24%, 0.17%, 0.16%, and 0.14%, under desorption conditions in N2, O2, H2O, CO2, and SFG (N2 + 12% CO2 + 6% H2O + 6% O2) atmospheres, respectively. The readsorption performances of PAC-N2, PAC-CO2, PAC-H2O, PAC-O2, and PAC-SFG were 40%, 72%, 77%, 58%, and 86%, respectively. In particular, compared with the original PAC, the physicochemical properties of PAC-SFG (optimum conditions) changed greatly; the surface area of PAC-SFG and the pore volume increased by 14.1% and 11.6%, respectively, and the average pore diameter decreased by 0.203 nm. Furthermore, the total acid content of PAC-SFG was 0.505, which was greater than those of the other samples. Additionally, the desorption and activation mechanisms in situ were determined under the optimum reaction conditions. The results showed that the activator gas reacted with C to form new functional groups, Lewis acid sites, and developed pore structures, which could increase Hg0 adsorption efficiency from 66% to 86% after the adsorption/desorption cycles. This study provides a novel idea for the reuse of SPAC, and this research is expected to provide valuable guidance for Hg0 removal and SPAC activated in situ during rapid desorption processes in future large-scale engineering applications.

Development of an improved mass transfer model for condensation with dynamic feedback regulation

In the field of condensation research, accurate and efficient numerical simulation models are highly desired. One of the widely used phase change mass transfer models is known as the Lee model. However, this model has limitations due to uncertainties in the mass transfer intensity factor, which can lead to simulation failures and impede large-scale engineering applications. This study presents an improved mass transfer model which employs a tuning function to dynamically and accurately modify the mass transfer intensity factor in each two-phase cell via feedback adjustment. This approach enables immediate and customized adjustment of the factor for each grid within the limit of the tuning function, significantly reducing the errors caused by repeated artificial adjustments and related uncertainties. The adjustment capabilities of the hyperbolic tangent and softsign functions are evaluated. The softsign function is superior in both regulation efficiency and accuracy. The model's accuracy is verified by comparing with previous experiments and simulations, as well as by the one-dimensional Stefan problem. The proposed model achieves high prediction accuracy, reduces the risk of simulation dispersion, and significantly enhances computational efficiency with the iteration number reduced by nearly half under certain conditions compared to the Lee model. Furthermore, the new model shows robustness as the prediction accuracy is insensitive to variations in critical parameters. The improved model is expected to provide valuable assistance for future research and applications in flow condensation with outstanding computational accuracy, efficiency, and stability.

Sparse-TFM imaging in frequency domain based on amplitude-squared parameter

Abstract The total focusing method (TFM) implemented in time domain has high complexity, limiting its large-scale engineering applications. In contrast, the frequency-domain TFM based on phase shift migration (PSM) is helpful to improve imaging efficiency. On this basis, partial data can be abandoned for imaging to save computing costs and shorten processing time without reducing imaging quality. In this paper, an adaptive sparse-TFM in the frequency domain is proposed by selecting desired signals from full matrix capture (FMC) data. The amplitude-squared parameter for all the received signals corresponding to each transmitting element is taken as the relevant weight, and sparse arrays are constructed adaptively according to the descending order of numerical values. Simulated and experimental results indicate that the proposed method has stable imaging quality under different sparsity ratios, rapidly improving imaging efficiency with good resolution for defect detection.

Dose prediction for cervical cancer in radiotherapy based on the beam channel generative adversarial network

BackgroundExisting deep learning methods, such as generative adversarial network (GAN) technology, face challenges when dealing with mixed datasets, which involve a combination of Intensity Modulated Radiotherapy (IMRT) and Volumetric Modulated Arc Therapy (VMAT). This issue significantly complicates the application of dose prediction in the field of radiotherapy. In this study, we propose a novel approach called beam channel GAN (Bc-GAN) to address the task of radiation dose prediction for mixed datasets. Bc-GAN introduces a dose prediction calculation method that requires less precision. By defining an approximate range for dose prediction, Bc-GAN limits the physical range of GAN prediction, resulting in more reasonable dose distribution predictions. MethodsWe adopt a beam angle weighting method to determine the beam angle in the dose calculation. The dose of the beam with the highest weight is calculated using medical images and is then inputted into the artificial intelligence dose prediction model as the input channel. Additionally, we collect data from a total of 346 patients with Cervical Cancer (CC) for dataset. After cleaning the data, we exclude 51 cases with incomplete organ delineation, leaving us with 295 cases (IMRT: VMAT = 137:158) randomly divided into three sets: the training set, the validation set, and the test set, with proportions of 205:60:30, respectively. The assessment of model predictions was conducted via an analysis of dose distributions on the tomographic plane, dose volume histogram (DVH), and dosimetric parameters within the target zones and organs at risk (OAR). ResultsAfter DVH analysis, minimal discrepancy was found between predicted and actual dose distributions in PTV and OAR. The predicted distribution aligned with clinical standards. Dosimetric parameters for PTV were generally lower in the predicted model, except for homogeneity index (HI) (0.238 ± 0.024, P = 0.017) and Dmax (53.599 ± 0.710 Gy, P = 1.8e-05). The prediction model varied in estimating doses for six organs. Specifically, small intestine showed higher V20 (67.92 ± 51.64 %, P = 0.019) and V30 (57.171 ± 1.213 %, P = 0.024) than manual planning. A similar trend was seen in colon's V30 (37.13 ± 61.14 %, P = 0.016). However, predicted bladder V30 (87.51 ± 41.44 %, P = 2.03e-16) was lower, indicating significant dosimetric differences. ConclusionOverall, this study presents an innovative prediction method for CC in radiotherapy using the Bc-GAN model, addressing the challenges posed by different radiotherapy techniques. The proposed approach allows IMRT and VMAT in radiotherapy to be used as training sets, enabling the potential for large-scale engineering and commercialization applications of artificial intelligence (AI). The Bc-GAN-based prediction method for CC in radiotherapy not only reduces the amount of data needed for the training set but also expedites the model generation process. This approach can be applied to guide the development of clinical radiation therapy plans. Furthermore, future studies should consider extending the dose prediction method to encompass other types of tumors.

Preparation and mechanical properties of the 2.5D carbon glass hybrid woven composite materials

Abstract The 2.5D carbon glass hybrid woven composite (CGHWC) is currently being utilized as a protective material for the external cables of solid rockets due to its extensive advantages in terms of structural load-bearing and integrated thermal insulation. This study reveals that 2.5D hybrid woven composites, prepared using T300 and T800, exhibit improved compression and tensile properties, respectively. T300 and T800 carbon fibers are preferred for the preparation of 2.5D CGHWC, with a volume fraction of carbon fibers along the weft yarn ranging from 20 to 60%. As the proportion of carbon fibers increases, the weft tensile and compressive strength of the composite material progressively improve, resulting in a maximum increase of 67% in tensile strength and 52% in compressive strength. The optimal volume fraction of carbon fibers was found to be 40%. The performance retention of low-cost hybrid composite materials was investigated, and it was found that even when the cost of carbon fibers decreased by 87.5%, the mechanical properties could still be maintained at above 85%. This article has expanded the mechanical performance database of hybrid composite materials, providing data support and theoretical foundation for the large-scale engineering application of composite materials.

Experimental and kinetic study on the solar-driven iron-based chemical looping dry reforming of methane

The chemical looping dry reforming of methane (CL-DRM) represents a promising pathway for large-scale engineering applications of thermochemical decarbonization techniques. To elucidate the intricate reaction mechanism of CL-DRM, a comprehensive kinetic model encompassing both gas-phase reactions and ferrite surface reactions is developed in this study. This model can serve as a numerical foundation for tracing the reaction progression of comparable iron-based oxygen carriers, allowing visualization of all reaction pathways and further determination of optimal reaction conditions. Besides, foam-structured materials employing NiO-doped CoFe2O4 as oxygen carriers were prepared to conduct application experiments for the CL-DRM on a self-designed solar thermochemical platform. The experimental outcomes, obtained under temperature conditions guided by numerical predictions, validate the promising feasibility of employing Ni-doped ferrite in the CL-DRM reaction system. At a reaction temperature of only 1150 K, remarkable peaks in H2 yield of 23.5 mLmin−1g−1, CO yield of 11.6 mLmin−1g−1, and CH4 conversion around 90% are attained, with a net solar-to-fuel conversion efficiency of 1.93%. A comparative analysis conducted with the conventional two-step thermochemical cycle under the same experimental setup underscores the notable advantages of CL-DRM in terms of syngas production capacity and conversion efficiency. Consequently, CL-DRM can be regarded as a pivotal transition towards the realization of a fully carbon-free thermochemical technology.

Study on the workability and early mechanical properties of carbon nanotube-coated fly ash modified cement-based grouting materials

Carbon nanotube (CNTs) reinforced cementitious composites have obvious advantages over traditional building materials in strength and impermeable durability. However, the material in question has not been widely employed in grouting engineering due to the limitations posed by dispersion issues. This study introduces a novel method of using amino functional groups to coat carbon nanotubes on the surface of fly ash to improve dispersion. The objective is to produce high-quality industrial-grade slurry and facilitate the transition of carbon nanotubes from small-scale research to large-scale engineering applications. The results show that mixing 14.3 wt% fly ash and 0.023 wt% CNTs in cementitious composites can replace an equivalent proportion of cement. Compared to traditional cement-based grouting material, the modified composites exhibit a 21.6 % increase in fluidity, a 7.9 % increase in the 7-day consolidation strength, and an 11.9 % reduction in the porosity of the slurry consolidation. The CNTs with large specific surface area on the fly ash surface provide sites for cement hydration reaction, accelerate cement hydration, and form dense hydration products. Additionally, the interaction between hydration products and CNTs within the microcracks of the cement matrix forms a 'bridging role' that enhances mechanical properties. The effectiveness of incorporating CNTs in reducing micro-damage during the loading process of slurry consolidation, enhancing integrity, and improving the grouting material's resistance to loading was further proved by acoustic emission, scanning electron microscopy, and fractal analysis of the fracture surface.

Multi-time-step coupling of peridynamics and classical continuum mechanics for dynamic brittle fracture

Peridynamics (PD), as a nonlocal theory, is well-suited for solving problems with discontinuities, such as cracks. However, the nonlocal effect of peridynamics makes it computationally expensive for dynamic fracture problems in large-scale engineering applications. As an alternative, this study proposes a multi-time-step (MTS) coupling model of PD and classical continuum mechanics (CCM) based on the Arlequin framework. Peridynamics is applied to the fracture domain of the structure, while continuum mechanics is applied to the rest of the structure. The MTS method enables the peridynamic model to be solved at a small time step and the continuum mechanical model is solved at a larger time step. Consequently, higher computational efficiency is achieved for the fracture domain of the structure while ensuring computational accuracy, and this coupling method can be easily applied to large-scale engineering fracture problems.

Operation of iron-based monolithic catalyst packing ozonation for industry wastewater advanced treatment: The importance of gas–liquid flow patterns and wastewater flow regimes

In this study, from the feasibility verification of the lab-scale test to the working condition study of the pilot-scale test the large-scale engineering application of the display manufacturing industry wastewater advanced treatment by ozonation with iron (Fe)-based monolithic catalyst packing was finally realized. Different from chemical packings, the catalyst packing has large porosity and specific surface area, while the pore size is small, which meets the requirements of •OH reaction, and these characteristics are necessary for engineering applications. Under the three scales, the reaction procedure and the corresponding reactor structure were introduced in detail. The importance of gas–liquid flow patterns and gas distribution device on treatment effect were proved in pilot-scale test. The treatment effect under gas–liquid counter-current flow was better than that of co-current flow. Through the analysis of the working conditions, the working parameters for high wastewater quantity and high organic loading were obtained. The large-scale test achieved the same excellent treatment effect as the lab/pilot-scale test, after 5 years of operation, the average chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal was about 72.0 %, and the COD concentrations after treatment were all lower than 30 mg/L. The biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) decreased from 10.22 to 2.50 mg/L on average. Under the short-circuiting phenomenon, the wastewater through the catalyst area unevenly and the organic pollutants were not effectively oxidized and decomposed. This also proved the importance of Fe-based monolithic catalyst packing in advanced treatment. This work proved the importance of gas–liquid flow patterns and wastewater flow regimes in the reactor, which can provide reference for other catalytic ozonation technology in large-scale engineering applications.

Improving Training Dataset Balance with ChatGPT Prompt Engineering

The rapid evolution of large language models, in particular OpenAI’s GPT-3.5-turbo and GPT-4, indicates a growing interest in advanced computational methodologies. This paper proposes a novel approach to synthetic data generation and knowledge distillation through prompt engineering. The potential of large language models (LLMs) is used to address the problem of unbalanced training datasets for other machine learning models. This is not only a common issue but also a crucial determinant of the final model quality and performance. Three prompting strategies have been considered: basic, composite, and similarity prompts. Although the initial results do not match the performance of comprehensive datasets, the similarity prompts method exhibits considerable promise, thus outperforming other methods. The investigation of our rebalancing methods opens pathways for future research on leveraging continuously developed LLMs for the enhanced generation of high-quality synthetic data. This could have an impact on many large-scale engineering applications.

Impact of aragonite coral powder on hydration, strength, and rheology of cement paste

Understanding the intricate bonding mechanism between coral reef surfaces and C–S–H is crucial for advancing large-scale engineering applications. This study conducts a comprehensive analysis of the impact of coral powder (CP) on cement paste. Initially, zeta potential experiments were performed to probe ion adsorption from the cement pore solution at the CP interface. We propose a novel model to quantify the adsorption of Ca2+ by CP. Subsequently, the study delves into the morphological properties of C–S–H nucleation and growth at this interface and formulates an equation elucidating the CP and Ca2+ adsorption relationship. Then, the crack extension behavior of cementitious materials was scrutinized. Finally, an examination of CP effects on the rheological properties of fresh cement pastes is presented. The findings indicate that CP particles exhibit a notably weaker adsorption affinity with Ca2+ compared to their interaction with SO42−. Compared to limestone (LP), CP exhibited a 32.1 % reduction in Ca2+ adsorption in Ca(OH)2 solutions, 44.2 % reduction in Ca(OH)2 + 10 mmol/L K2SO4, and 40.6 % reduction in Ca(OH)2 + 50 mmol/L K2SO4 solutions. Higher zeta potential values correspond to stronger Ca2+ adsorption and broader surface coverage of Ca2+. The inferior surface characteristics of CP hinder C–S–H nucleation and growth, leading to a low CH orientation index in cement paste containing CP. These pastes exhibit cracks more frequently between CP and hydration products. An attractive force is observed between CP and cement particles, decreasing cement paste flowability.

Study of the Dynamic Recrystallization Behavior of Mg-Gd-Y-Zn-Zr Alloy Based on Experiments and Cellular Automaton Simulation

The exploration of the relationship between process parameters and grain evolution during the thermal deformation of rare-earth magnesium alloys using simulation software has significant implications for enhancing research and development efficiency and advancing the large-scale engineering application of high-performance rare-earth magnesium alloys. Through single-pass hot compression experiments, this study obtained high-temperature flow stress curves for rare-earth magnesium alloys, analyzing the variation patterns of these curves and the softening mechanism of the materials. Drawing on physical metallurgical theories, such as the evolution of dislocation density during dynamic recrystallization, recrystallization nucleation, and grain growth, the authors of this paper establish a cellular automaton model to simulate the dynamic recrystallization process by tracking the sole internal variable—the evolution of dislocation density within cells. This model was developed through the secondary development of the DEFORM-3D finite element software. The results indicate that the model established in this study accurately simulates the evolution process of grain growth during heat treatment and the dynamic recrystallization microstructure during the thermal deformation of rare-earth magnesium alloys. The simulated results align well with relevant theories and metallographic experimental results, enabling the simulation of the dynamic recrystallization microstructure and grain size prediction during the deformation process of rare-earth magnesium alloys.

Study on efficiency and mechanism of ultrasonic controlling membrane fouling in ceramic membrane bioreactors.

In recent years, ceramic membranes have been increasingly used in membrane bioreactors (MBRs). However, membrane fouling was still the core issue restricting the large-scale engineering application of ceramic MBRs. As a novel and alternative technology, ultrasonic could be used to control membrane fouling. This research focused on the efficiency and mechanism of ultrasonic controlling membrane fouling in ceramic MBRs. The results showed that ultrasonic reduced the sludge concentration in MBR, and the average particle size of sludge was always in a high range. The sludge activity of the system was stable at 6-9 (mg O2·(g MLSS·h)-1), indicating that ultrasonic did not destroy the activity of microorganisms in the system. The extracellular polymer substance (EPS) of the ultrasonic group was slightly higher than that of the control group, while the soluble microbial product (SMP) content was relatively stable. The ceramic membrane of the ultrasonic group has a partial retention effect on the organic components. The application of ultrasonic slowed down the decrease of the hydrophilicity of the ceramic membrane. The main pollutants on the membrane surface exist in the form of aromatic and heteroaromatic rings, alkynes, and so forth. Ultrasonic removes the amide substances from the membrane surface. Membrane fouling resistance is mainly due to membrane pore blockage, accounting for 75.53%. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Enrich the research on the mechanism of ultrasonic technology in membrane fouling control. The MBR can still operate normally with ultrasonic applied. The time for the ceramic membrane to reach the fouling end point is 2.4 times that without ultrasonic. The main cause of membrane fouling was pore blocking, accounting for 75.53%.

High-order finite volume multi-resolution WENO schemes with adaptive linear weights on triangular meshes

This paper presents high-order finite volume multi-resolution weighted essentially non-oscillatory schemes with adaptive linear weights to solve hyperbolic conservation laws on triangular meshes. They are abbreviated as the ALW-MR-WENO schemes. The novel third-order, fourth-order, and fifth-order ALW-MR-WENO schemes are designed by applying two unequal-sized hierarchical central stencils in comparison to the classical WENO schemes which utilize many equal-sized upwind biased/central stencils. With the application of one simple condition, only two linear weights are automatically adjusted to be positive values on condition that their summation is one. The novel finite volume ALW-MR-WENO schemes could maintain the designed order of accuracy in smooth areas and reduce to the first-order accuracy so as to keep essentially non-oscillatory properties around strong discontinuities. So it is the first time that any high-order WENO schemes with the application of only two unequal-sized stencils are obtained on triangular meshes. And the major benefits are their efficiency, compactness, and simplicity in large scale engineering applications on unstructured meshes. Finally, several tests are used to indicate the effectiveness of these new finite volume WENO schemes.

Study on the influence of tool rotational speeds/welding traverse speeds on the quality and surface formation of 6mm copper friction stir welding

Abstract This paper describes a study on the formation and process parameters of friction stir welding joints on 6mm thick copper plates. Numerous experiments were conducted at lower rotational speeds and moderate welding traverse speeds to obtain optimal process parameters for high-quality friction stir welding joints with good surface formation and no internal defects. Simultaneously, considering the thickness tolerance fluctuations in the large-scale engineering application of Copper FSW, tests were conducted with pin lengths and shoulder plunge depths less than the plate thickness. Additionally, a unique modular stirring tool was designed by ourselves to reduce costs in large-scale engineering applications. The experimental results demonstrate that under the parameters of a rotational speed of 275r/min and a traverse speed of 120mm/min, welding joints with both surface and internal integrity can be achieved, with the joint strength level exceeding 80% of the base material. The mechanical weak point of the joint is located in the TMAZ region just below the pin as revealed by SEM testing, which shows both plastic and brittle fractures. EDS results indicate no inclusions or second-phase precipitates at the surface and port locations.

Metal-Organic Framework-Based Composites for the Adsorption Removal of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances from Water.

The increasing health risks posed by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in the environment highlight the importance of implementing effective removal techniques. Conventional wastewater treatment processes are inadequate for removing persistent organic pollutants. Recent studies have increasingly demonstrated that metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are capable of removing PFASs from water through adsorption techniques. However, there is still constructive discussion on the potential of MOFs in adsorbing and removing PFASs for large-scale engineering applications. This review systematically investigates the use of MOFs as adsorbents for the removal of PFAS in water treatment. This primarily involved a comprehensive analysis of existing literature to understand the adsorption mechanisms of MOFs and to identify factors that enhance their efficiency in removing PFASs. We also explore the critical aspects of regeneration and stability of MOFs, assessing their reusability and long-term performance, which are essential for large-scale water treatment applications. Finally, our study highlights the challenges of removing PFASs using MOFs. Especially, the efficient removal of short-chain PFASs with hydrophilicity is a major challenge, while medium- to long-chain PFASs are frequently susceptible to being captured from water by MOFs through multiple synergistic effects. The ion-exchange force may be the key to solving this difficulty, but its susceptibility to ion interference in water needs to be addressed in practical applications. We hope that this review can provide valuable insights into the effective removal and adsorption mechanisms of PFASs as well as advance the sustainable utilization of MOFs in the field of water treatment, thereby presenting a novel perspective.

Enhancing bonding behavior between basalt fiber-reinforced polymer sheets and concrete using resin pre-coating method and multi-wall carbon nanotubes

There is a crucial problem of premature debonding failure in fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) sheet external bonding reinforcement for concrete structures. Using anhydrous ethanol as solvent instead of acetone, the effect of resin pre-coating (RPC) technique with neat resin-ethanol solution and multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)-resin-ethanol solution on the bonding behavior of the FRP-concrete joints was investigated by single-shear tests. Experimental results indicated that RPC technique significantly enhanced the bonding properties, especially when the pre-coating was MWCNTs-resin-ethanol solution. In the case of using neat epoxy resin as adhesive, compared with the control specimens without RPC treatment, the ultimate bearing capacity, ultimate global slip, maximum bond stress and interface fracture energy of the basalt fiber-reinforced polymer (BFRP)-concrete joints using RPC treatment with MWCNTs-resin-ethanol solution increased by 32.6 %, 48.4 %, 68.3 % and 88.8 %, respectively. MWCNTs could be seen in scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images of the fracture surface, which indicated that they could penetrate into the concrete and the crack bridging and pull-out of MWCNTs could enhance the interfacial adhesion of the FRP-concrete joints. Compared with the RPC treatment using the restricted acetone, the RPC treatment with MWCNTs-resin-ethanol solution can more significantly enhance the bond properties of the interface between concrete and FRP sheet, and it is suitable for large-scale practical engineering applications on site. This study demonstrated the great promise of the RPC technique with MWCNTs-resin-ethanol solution toward practical engineering application in reinforcement and repair of concrete structures.

An experimental investigation into the effect two-phase flow induced vibrations have on a J-shaped flexible pipe

Multiphase flow inside of pipes occurs in a wide variety of engineering applications, including offshore deep-water oil and gas transport. Vibrations induced by the flow inside of the pipe can lead to its mechanical failure and thus lead to uncontrolled release of the fluids being transported. In subsea applications, flexible J-risers are often employed to deliver the produced fluids from the seafloor to the host platform. Despite the potentially significant liabilities associated with subsea hydrocarbon leaks, there has been a distinct lack of investigations into how flow induced vibrations in large scale, pressurised flexible J-risers can lead to system integrity loss. Previous investigations have generally focused on the response of rigid pipes or small scale, unpressurised flexible risers. This study presents an investigation into the response of a 10 m long, 50.8 mm internal diameter composite riser containing a tensile armour helical structure to a variety of two-phase, water-nitrogen flows at 10.8 barg of pressure and ambient temperature. High speed cameras were used to investigate the structure of the flow at either end of the flexible riser, whilst synchronised surface mounted strain gauges and accelerometers were used to investigate the response of the pipe. Time-averaged data were acquired to assess the general response of the pipe, whilst a statistical analysis of the fluctuations highlighted the movement of the pipe. One-dimensional and computational fluid dynamics simulations were used to define the experimental test matrix and provide further insight into the structure of the flow inside the J-riser. Single-phase gas flow was found not to cause the J-riser to move significantly, whilst multiphase flow led to significant in-plane movement of the pipe. Increasing the liquid flow rate (or decreasing the gas flow rate) increased the mean strain experienced by the pipe. At low gas flow rates, the pipe oscillated smoothly about its mean position, but at higher gas flow rates a violent intermittent whipping motion was observed. The latter produced large in-plane and out-of-plane movement of the pipe which could pose a threat to system integrity. This work offers new insights into fluid-structure interactions in large scale engineering applications, contributing to improved system design and control.
