Comparing sharp and smooth transitions of the second slow-roll parameter in single-field inflation

In single-field inflation, violation of the slow-roll approximation can lead to growth of curvature perturbation outside the horizon. This violation is characterized by a period with a large negative value of the second slow-roll parameter. At an early time, inflation must satisfy the slow-roll approximation, so the large-scale curvature perturbation can explain the cosmic microwave background fluctuations. At intermediate time, it is viable to have a theory that violates the slow-roll approximation, which implies amplification of the curvature perturbation on small scales. Specifically, we consider ultraslow-roll inflation as the intermediate period. At late time, inflation should go back to the slow roll period so that it can end. This means that there are two transitions of the second slow-roll parameter. In this paper, we compare two different possibilities for the second transition: sharp and smooth transitions. Focusing on effects generated by the relevant cubic self-interaction of the curvature perturbation, we find that the bispectrum and one-loop correction to the power spectrum due to the change of the second slow-roll parameter vanish if and only if theMukhanov-Sasaki equation for perturbation satisfies a specific condition called Wands duality.We also find in the case of sharp transition that, even though this duality is satisfied in the ultraslow-roll and slow-roll phases, it is severely violated at the transition so that the resultant one-loop correction is extremely large inversely proportional to the duration of the transition.

Viable vector coherent oscillation dark matter

We construct a viable model of the vector coherent oscillation dark matter. The vector boson is coupled to the inflaton through the kinetic function so that the effective Hubble mass term is cancelled out. In order to avoid strong constraints from isocurvature perturbation and statistically anisotropic curvature perturbation, the inflaton is arranged so that it does not contribute to the observed large scale curvature perturbation and we introduce a curvaton. We found viable vector coherent oscillation dark matter scenario for the wide vector mass range from 10-21 eV to 1 eV.

Thermal loop effects on large-scale curvature perturbation in the Higgs inflation

It is known that the Higgs potential in the Standard Model can drive a successful inflation as long as the Higgs field couples non-minimally to gravity. It is then inevitable to take into account the loop corrections of the Standard Model particles to the Higgs potential in the Higgs inflation. In this paper, we discuss the one-loop corrections at finite temperature to the curvature perturbation generated during the Higgs inflation. We find that the thermal loop effects can suppress the power of the curvature perturbation at large scales, thus resulting in a low quadrupole of the temperature anisotropy in the cosmic microwave background.

Squeezed relic photons beyond the horizon

Owing to the analogy with the ordinary photons in the visible range of the electromagnetic spectrum, the Glauber theory is generalized to address the quantum coherence of the gauge field fluctuations parametrically amplified during an inflationary stage of expansion. The first and second degrees of quantum coherence of relic photons are then computed beyond the effective horizon defined by the evolution of the susceptibility. In the zero-delay limit the Hanbury Brown-Twiss correlations exhibit a super-Poissonian statistics which is however different from the conventional results of the single-mode approximation customarily employed, in quantum optics, to classify the coherence properties of visible light. While in the case of large-scale curvature perturbations the degrees of quantum coherence coincide with the naive expectation of the single-mode approximation, the net degree of second-order coherence computed for the relic photons diminishes thanks to the effect of the polarizations. We suggest that the Hanbury Brown-twiss correlations are probably the only tool to assess the quantum or classical origin of the large-scale magnetic fluctuations and of the corresponding curvature perturbations.

Testing cosmological models with large-scale power modulation using microwave background polarization observations

We examine the degree to which observations of large-scale cosmic microwave background (CMB) polarization can shed light on the puzzling large-scale power modulation in maps of CMB anisotropy. We consider a phenomenological model in which the observed anomaly is caused by modulation of large-scale primordial curvature perturbations, and calculate Fisher information and error forecasts for future polarization data, constrained by the existing CMB anisotropy data. Because a significant fraction of the available information is contained in correlations with the anomalous temperature data, it is essential to account for these constraints. We also present a systematic approach to finding a set of normal modes that maximize the available information, generalizing the well-known Karhunen-Loeve transformation to take account of the constraints from the temperature data. A polarization map covering at least $\sim 60\%$ of the sky should be able to provide a $3\sigma$ detection of modulation at the level favored by the temperature data. A significant fraction of the information in such a data set is contained in the single mode that optimally encapsulates the signal due to temperature-polarization correlation.

A relativistic signature in large-scale structure

In General Relativity, the constraint equation relating metric and density perturbations is inherently nonlinear, leading to an effective non-Gaussianity in the dark matter density field on large scales - even if the primordial metric perturbation is Gaussian. Intrinsic non-Gaussianity in the large-scale dark matter overdensity in GR is real and physical. However, the variance smoothed on a local physical scale is not correlated with the large-scale curvature perturbation, so that there is no relativistic signature in the galaxy bias when using the simplest model of bias. It is an open question whether the observable mass proxies such as luminosity or weak lensing correspond directly to the physical mass in the simple halo bias model. If not, there may be observables that encode this relativistic signature.

Magnetization of fluid phonons and large-scale curvature perturbations

The quasinormal mode of a gravitating and magnetized fluid in a spatially flat, isotropic and homogeneous cosmological background is derived in the presence of the fluid sources of anisotropic stress and of the entropic fluctuations of the plasma. The obtained gauge-invariant description involves a system of two coupled differential equations of which the physical content is analyzed in all the most relevant situations. The Cauchy problem of large-scale curvature perturbations during the radiation dominated stage of expansion can be neatly formulated, and its general solution is shown to depend on five initial data assigned when the relevant physical wavelengths are larger than the particle horizon. The consequences of this approach are explored.

Large scale cosmic perturbation from evaporation of primordial black holes

We present a novel mechanism to generate the cosmic perturbation from evaporation of primordial black holes. A mass of a field is fluctuated if it is given by a vacuum expectation value of a light scalar field because of the quantum fluctuation during inflation. The fluctuated mass causes variations of the evaporation time of the primordial black holes. Therefore provided the primordial black holes dominate the universe when they evaporate, primordial cosmic perturbations are generated. We find that the amplitude of the large scale curvature perturbation generated in this scenario can be consistent with the observed value. Interestingly, our mechanism works even if all fields which are responsible for inflation and the generation of the cosmic perturbation are decoupled from the visible sector except for the gravitational interaction. An implication to the running spectral index is also discussed.

Compressible hydromagnetic nonlinearities in the predecoupling plasma

The adiabatic inhomogeneities of the scalar curvature lead to a compressible flow affecting the dynamics of the hydromagnetic nonlinearities. The influence of the plasma on the evolution of a putative magnetic field is explored with the aim of obtaining an effective description valid for sufficiently large scales. The bulk velocity of the plasma, computed in the framework of the LambdaCDM scenario, feeds back into the evolution of the magnetic power spectra leading to a (nonlocal) master equation valid in Fourier space and similar to the ones discussed in the context of wave turbulence. Conversely, in physical space, the magnetic power spectra obey a Schroedinger-like equation whose effective potential depends on the large-scale curvature perturbations. Explicit solutions are presented both in physical space and in Fourier space. It is argued that curvature inhomogeneities, compatible with the WMAP 7yr data, shift to lower wavenumbers the magnetic diffusivity scale.

Reheating in tachyonic inflationary models: Effects on the large scale curvature perturbations

We investigate the problem of perturbative reheating and its effects on the evolution of the curvature perturbations in tachyonic inflationary models. We derive the equations governing the evolution of the scalar perturbations for a system consisting of a tachyon and a perfect fluid. Assuming the perfect fluid to be radiation, we solve the coupled equations for the system numerically and study the evolution of the perturbations from the sub-Hubble to the super-Hubble scales. In particular, we analyze the effects of the transition from tachyon driven inflation to the radiation dominated epoch on the evolution of the large scale curvature and non-adiabatic pressure perturbations. We consider two different potentials to describe the tachyon and study the effects of two possible types of decay of the tachyon into radiation. We plot the spectrum of curvature perturbations at the end of inflation as well as at the early stages of the radiation dominated epoch. We find that reheating does not affect the amplitude of the curvature perturbations in any of these cases. These results corroborate similar conclusions that have been arrived at earlier based on the study of the evolution of the perturbations in the super-Hubble limit. We illustrate that, before the transition to the radiation dominated epoch, the relative non-adiabatic pressure perturbation between the tachyon and radiation decays in a fashion very similar to that of the intrinsic entropy perturbation associated with the tachyon. Moreover, we show that, after the transition, the relative non-adiabatic pressure perturbation dies down extremely rapidly during the early stages of the radiation dominated epoch. It is these behavior which ensure that the amplitude of the curvature perturbations remain unaffected during reheating. We also discuss the corresponding results for the popular chaotic inflation model in the case of the canonical scalar field.

No large scale curvature perturbations during the waterfall phase transition of hybrid inflation

In this paper the possibility of generating large scale curvature perturbations induced from the entropic perturbations during the waterfall phase transition of standard hybrid inflation model is studied. We show that whether or not appreciable amounts of large scale curvature perturbations are produced during the waterfall phase transition depend crucially on the competition between the classical and the quantum mechanical back-reactions to terminate inflation. If one considers only the classical evolution of the system we show that the highly blue-tilted entropy perturbations induce highly blue-tilted large scale curvature perturbations during the waterfall phase transition which dominate over the original adiabatic curvature perturbations. However, we show that the quantum back-reactions of the waterfall field inhomogeneities produced during the phase transition dominate completely over the classical back-reactions. The cumulative quantum back-reactions of very small scales tachyonic modes terminate inflation very efficiently and shut off the curvature perturbations evolution during the waterfall phase transition. This indicates that the standard hybrid inflation model is safe under large scale curvature perturbations during the waterfall phase transition.

Curvature perturbations and non-Gaussianities from the waterfall phase transition during inflation

We consider a variant of hybrid inflation where the waterfall phase transition occurs during inflation. By adjusting the parameters associated with the mass of the waterfall field, we can achieve a phase transition that is not sharp, thus inflation can proceed for about 50–60 e-folds after the waterfall phase transition. We show that one can work within the limit where the quantum back-reactions are subdominant compared to the classical back-reactions. It is shown that a significant amount of large scale curvature perturbations are induced from the entropy perturbations. The curvature perturbation spectral index is either blue or red depending on whether the mode of interest leaves the horizon before the phase transition or after the phase transition. This can have interesting observational consequences on CMB. The non-Gaussianity parameter fNL is calculated to be ≲ 1 but much bigger than the slow-roll parameters.

Large-scale perturbations from the waterfall field in hybrid inflation

We estimate large-scale curvature perturbations from isocurvature fluctuations in the waterfall field during hybrid inflation, in addition to the usual inflaton field perturbations. The tachyonic instability at the end of inflation leads to an explosive growth of super-Hubble scale perturbations, but they retain the steep blue spectrum characteristic of vacuum fluctuations in a massive field during inflation. The power spectrum thus peaks around the Hubble-horizon scale at the end of inflation. We extend the usual δN formalism to include the essential role of these small fluctuations when estimating the large-scale curvature perturbation. The resulting curvature perturbation due to fluctuations in the waterfall field is second-order and the spectrum is expected to be of order 10−54 on cosmological scales.

Spectator stresses and CMB observables

The large-scale curvature perturbations induced by spectator anisotropic stresses are analyzed across the matter-radiation transition. It is assumed that the anisotropic stress is associated with a plasma component whose energy density is subdominant both today and prior to photon decoupling. The enforcement of the momentum constraint and the interplay with the neutrino anisotropic stress determine the regular initial conditions of the Einstein-Boltzmann hierarchy. The Cosmic Microwave Background observables have shapes and phases which differ both from the ones of the conventional adiabatic mode as well as from their non-adiabatic counterparts.

Study of the growth of entropy modes in MSSM flat directions decay: constraints on the parameter space

We study how the resonant decay of moduli fields arising in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) could affect large scale curvature perturbations in the early universe. It has been known for some time that the presence of entropy perturbations in a multi-component system can act as seeds for the curvature perturbations on all scales. These entropy perturbations could be amplified exponentially if one of the moduli decays via stochastic resonance, affecting the curvature power spectrum in the process. By imposing the COBE normalization on this power spectrum, one could put constraints on the masses and couplings of the underlying particle physics model without having to rely on collider experiments. We discuss in detail the case of the MSSM but this method could be applied to other theories beyond the Standard Model.

Suppressing the large scale curvature perturbation by interacting fluids

The large-scale dynamics of a two-fluid system with a time dependent interaction is studied analytically and numerically. We show how a rapid transition can significantly suppress the large-scale curvature perturbation and present approximative formulae for estimating the effect. By comparing to numerical results, we study the applicability of the approximation and find good agreement with exact calculations.

Large-scale curvature perturbations with spatial and time variations of the inflaton decay rate

We present a gauge-invariant formalism to study the evolution of the curvature and entropy perturbations in the case in which spatialand time variations of the inflaton decay rate into ordinarymatter are present. During the reheating stage after inflation, curvature perturbations can vary with time on super-horizon scales sourced by a gauge-invariant inflaton decay rate perturbation. We showthat the latter is a function not only of the spatial variationsof the decay rate generated during inflation, as envisagedin a recently proposed scenario, but also ofthe time variation of the inflaton decay rate during reheating. If only the second source is present, the final curvatureperturbation at the end of the reheating stage is proportionalto the curvature perturbation at the beginning of reheating, with a coefficient of proportionality which can be either smalleror larger than unity depending upon the underlyingphysics governing the time variation of the inflaton decay rate.As a consequence, we show that the standard consistency relation between the amplitude of curvature perturbations, the amplitude of tensor perturbations and the tensor spectral index of one-single-field models of inflation is violatedand there is the possibility that the tensor-to-curvature amplitude ratio is larger than in the standard case.

Large-scale curvature and entropy perturbations for multiple interacting fluids

We present a gauge-invariant formalism to study the evolution of curvature perturbations in a Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe filled by multiple interacting fluids. We resolve arbitrary perturbations into adiabatic and entropy components and derive their coupled evolution equations. We demonstrate that perturbations obeying a generalized adiabatic condition remain adiabatic in the large-scale limit, even when one includes energy transfer between fluids. As a specific application we study the recently proposed curvaton model, in which the curvaton decays into radiation. We use the coupled evolution equations to show how an initial isocurvature perturbation in the curvaton gives rise to an adiabatic curvature perturbation after the curvaton decays.

Generating the curvature perturbation without an inflaton

We present a mechanism for the origin of the large-scale curvature perturbation in our Universe by the late decay of a massive scalar field, the curvaton. The curvaton is light during a period of cosmological inflation, when it acquires a perturbation with an almost scale-invariant spectrum. This corresponds initially to an isocurvature density perturbation, which generates the curvature perturbation after inflation when the curvaton density becomes a significant fraction of the total. The isocurvature density perturbation disappears if the curvaton completely decays into thermalised radiation. Any residual isocurvature perturbation is 100% correlated with the curvature. The same mechanism can also generate the curvature perturbation in pre-big bang/ekpyrotic models, provided that the curvaton has a suitable non-canonical kinetic term so as to generate a flat spectrum.

Large-scale cosmological perturbations on the brane

In brane-world cosmologies of Randall-Sundrum type, we show that evolution of large-scale curvature perturbations may be determined on the brane, without solving the bulk perturbation equations. The influence of the bulk gravitational field on the brane is felt through a projected Weyl tensor which behaves effectively like an imperfect radiation fluid with anisotropic stress. We define curvature perturbations on uniform density surfaces for both the matter and Weyl fluids, and show that their evolution on large scales follows directly from the energy conservation equations for each fluid. The total curvature perturbation is not necessarily constant for adiabatic matter perturbations, but can change due to the Weyl entropy perturbation. To relate this curvature perturbation to the longitudinal gauge metric potentials requires knowledge of the Weyl anisotropic stress which is not determined by the equations on the brane. We discuss the implications for large-angle anisotropies on the cosmic microwave background sky.
