A high-resolution spectroscopic search for multiple populations in the 2 Gyr old cluster NGC 1846

ABSTRACT We present detailed C, O, Na, Mg, Si, Ca, Ti, V, Fe, Zr, Ba, and Eu abundance measurements for 20 red giant branch (RGB) stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) star cluster NGC 1846 ([Fe/H] = −0.59). This cluster is 1.95 Gyr old and lies just below the supposed lower age limit (2 Gyr) for the presence of multiple populations in massive star clusters. Our measurements are based on high- and low-resolution VLT/FLAMES spectra combined with photometric data from Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Corrections for non-local thermodynamic equilibrium effects are also included for O, Na, Mg, Si, Ca, Fe, and Ba. Our results show that there is no evidence for multiple populations in this cluster based on the lack of any intrinsic star-to-star spread in the abundances of Na and O: We place 95 per cent confidence limits on the intrinsic dispersion for these elements of ≤0.07 and ≤0.09 dex, respectively. However, we do detect a significant spread in the carbon abundances, indicating varying evolutionary mixing occurring on the RGB that increases with luminosity. Overall, the general abundance patterns for NGC 1846 are similar to those seen in previous studies of intermediate-age LMC star clusters and field stars.

A genuine Large Magellanic Cloud age gap star cluster

ABSTRACT We confirm the existence of a second Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) star cluster, KMHK 1592, with an age that falls in the middle of the so-called LMC star cluster age gap, a long period of time (∼4–11 Gyr) where no star cluster had been uncovered, except ESO 121-SC 03. The age (8.0 ± 0.5 Gyr) and the metallicity ([Fe/H] = −1.0 ± 0.2 dex) of KMHK 1592 were derived from the fit of theoretical isochrones to the intrinsic star cluster colour–magnitude diagram sequences, which were unveiled using a robust star-by-star membership probability procedure. Because of the relative low brightness of the star cluster, deep GEMINI GMOS images were used. We discuss the pros and cons of three glimpsed scenarios that could explain the presence of both LMC age gap star clusters in the outskirts of the LMC, namely: in situ star cluster formation, capture from the Small Magellanic Cloud, or accretion of a small dwarf galaxy.

Multiple populations of Hβ emission line stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud cluster NGC 1971

We revisited the young Large Magellanic Cloud star cluster NGC 1971 with the aim of providing additional clues to our understanding of its observed extended main-sequence turnoff (eMSTO), a feature commonly seen in young star clusters that has recently been argued to be caused by a real age spread similar to the cluster age (∼160 Myr). We combined accurate Washington and Strömgren photometry of stars with high membership probability to explore the nature of this eMSTO. From different ad hoc defined pseudo-colors, we found that bluer and redder stars distributed throughout the eMSTO do not show any inhomogeneities of light- and heavy-element abundances. These blue and red stars are split into two clearly different groups only when the Washington M magnitudes are employed, which delimites the number of spectral features that cause the appearance of the eMSTO. We speculate that Be stars populate the eMSTO of NGC 1971 because (i) Hβ contributes to the M passband, (ii) Hβ emissions are common features of Be stars, and (iii) the Washington M and T1 magnitudes are tightly correlated; the latter measuring the observed contribution of Hα emission line in Be stars, which is in turn correlated with Hβ emissions. This is the first observational result to our knowledge that indicates that Hβ emissions are the origin of eMSTOs observed in young star clusters. Our results certainly open new possibilities of studying eMSTO from photometric systems with passbands centered at features commonly seen in Be stars.

Strömgren metallicities for intermediate-age and old star clusters

We report results that show that the straightforward star cluster metallicities obtained from Strömgren vby photometry are age-dependent and need to be corrected for further use. This outcome arises from the comparison of [Fe/H] values derived from Strömgren photometry with those metallicities published in the literature for 26 Large and Small Magellanic Cloud star clusters, whose ages range from ∼1 Gyr up to the oldest-known globular cluster ages in these galaxies. While deriving mean star cluster metallicities, we carried out a thorough selection of red giant branch candidates to comply with the Strömgren metallicity calibration validity regime. We paid attention to the effect of contamination by field stars, particularly those that lie inside the star clusters’ radii, that are distributed along the star cluster red giant branches and that have [Fe/H] values covering a similar range as that for the selected stars. We find that the measured Strömgren metallicities are systematically more metal-poor than the published ones and that a quadratically age-varying function reproduces the relative metallicity values with an overall uncertainty of ∼0.05 dex. We finally performed a similar comparison relying on a fully independent approach, which consisted in using theoretical red giant branches of old globular clusters spanning [Fe/H] values from −2.0 up to 0.0 dex as standards. We then superimposed onto them the red giant branches of star clusters with ages in the range 1.0−12.5 Gyr and estimated their associated metallicities by interpolation. The derived theoretical relative metallicities follow a similar trend as a function of the star clusters’ ages as what has been found from observations of star clusters.

A study of stellar population of intermediate-age globular cluster NGC 2249

The Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) star cluster NGC 2249 has been found to exhibit an extended main-sequence turn-off (eMSTO) in the color-magnitude diagram (CMD) derived from the data of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Such CMDs can potentially be explained via a spread of stellar age or rotation rate of single-aged stars, leading to a confusion of its stellar population type. In this work, we use different combinations of age spread (A), rotation (R), and binarity (B) to study the stellar population of this cluster, via a deep HST CMD. Because binaries are commonly observed in star clusters, three models of this study take binaries into account. We finally derive the best-fit stellar population parameters, i.e., metallicity (Z = 0.008), age (0.7–1.0Gyr), reddening (E(B-I) = 0.52–0.55 mag), distance modulus (18.54–18.57mag), binary fraction (50%), rotating star fraction (0–50%), and star formation history mode for NGC 2249. We find that both age spread (A + B or A + R + B) and rotating stars (R + B) can reproduce the main CMD features well, while rotation alone does not reproduce the detailed eMSTO morphology. This suggests that an age spread of 200Myrs is needed to form the eMSTO of cluster NGC 2249, even if stellar rotation is taken into account. Dynamical simulation could be useful for revealing the origin of the eMSTO.

Using the Age and Metallicity of 8 Star Clusters to confirm the Chemical Enrichment History of the LMC

In this paper, we find the ages and metallicities of 8 Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) star clusters obtained from integrated light spectra and use them to obtain the Chemical Enrichment History of the host galaxy. Our results are in good agreement with those obtained from resolved studies. This confirms that this method can be used for far away galaxies for which their star clusters are not resolved.

Parameter estimation for scarce stellar populations

We present a Bayesian method to determine simultaneously the age, metallicity, distance modulus, and interstellar reddening by dust of any resolved stellar population, by comparing the observed and synthetic color magnitude diagrams on a star by star basis, with no need to bin the data into a carefully selected magnitude grid. We test the method with mock stellar populations, and show that it works correctly even for scarce stellar populations with only one or two hundred stars above the main sequence turn off. If the population is the result of two star formation bursts, we can infer the contribution of each event to the total stellar population. The code works automatically and has already been used to study massive amounts of Magellanic clouds photometric data. In this paper we analyze in detail three Large Magellanic Cloud star clusters and 6 Ultra Faint Dwarf Galaxies. For these galaxies we recover physical parameters in agreement with those quoted in the literature, age $\sim13.7$ Gyr and a very low metallicity $log\,Z\sim-4$. Searching for multiple populations in these galaxies, we find, at a very low significance level, signs of a double stellar population for Ursa Major I: a dominant old population and a younger one which contributes $\sim25$% of the stars, in agreement with independent results from other authors.

Blue Straggler Stars beyond the Milky Way. IV. Radial Distributions and Dynamical Implications

Blue straggler stars have been proposeed as powerful indicators to measure the dynamical state of Galactic globular clusters. Here we examine for the first time if this framework of blue straggler stars as dynamical clocks, which was specifically developed for Galactic globular clusters, may also hold for younger globular clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud. Using Hubble Space Telescope observations, we study seven Large Magellanic Cloud star clusters with ages between ~700 Myr and 7 Gyr. We confirm that our sample clusters are consistent with the empirical correlation previously derived for Galactic globular clusters, within a modest tolerance. We suggest that to further examine if blue straggler stars can measure the dynamical state of their host clusters over an extended range of dynamical ages, more studies of dynamically older Magellanic Cloud clusters are required. We discuss the physical implications of our results in terms of their central, dimensionless King potential, as well as the initial retention fraction of black holes.

Spectroscopic Fundamental Parameters of 16 Young Large Magellanic Cloud Star Clusters

Flux-calibrated integrated spectra have been obtained for a sample of 16 blue compact and high surface brightness Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) star clusters. The spectra cover the wavelength range 3700–6800 Å, with a typical resolution and dispersion of 14 Å and 3.5 Å/pixel, respectively. We simultaneously derive foreground E(B − V) reddening values and ages for the clusters by comparing the line strengths and continuum distribution of their integrated spectra with those of LMC cluster spectra templates. As a first approach to obtain cluster ages, we also use the equivalent width (EW) of Balmer absorption lines and some diagnostic diagrams involving the sum of the EWs of selected spectral lines. Through evolutionary synthesis models for simple stellar populations and using a full-spectrum fitting code, we also derive reddenings, ages, and metallicities (Z/Z⊙) for the cluster sample. No metallicity determinations have been previously performed for nine out of the 16 clusters here studied. We find good agreement between the cluster ages derived from the template-matching method and those ages estimated from theoretical evolutionary synthesis models. All of the studied clusters are found to be young, with ages ranging from 15 Myr (NGC 1693) to 80 Myr (NGC 2160), affected by reddening values typical for the LMC: . The derived metallicities Z/Z⊙ range from 0.2 up to 1.0 (solar metal content). We compare our results with those reported in the literature, and discuss the distribution of metallicity values. In an effort to create a spectral library at LMC metallicity level with several clusters per age range, the present cluster sample stands out as a useful complement to previous ones.

A likely runaway star cluster in the outer disc of the Large Magellanic Cloud

We present results from photometric and spectroscopic data obtained with SOAR and Gemini observatory facilities in the field of a recently discovered star cluster. The cluster, projected towards the Eastern side of the outer disc of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), was originally placed nearly 10 kpc behind the LMC with an age and metallicity typical of the innermost LMC star cluster population. We assigned radial velocity (RV) memberships to stars observed spectroscopically, and derived the cluster age and distance from theoretical isochrone fitting to the cluster colour-magnitude diagram. The new object turned out to be a 0.9 Gyr old outer LMC disc cluster, which possibly reached the present position after being scattered from the innermost LMC regions where it might have been born. We arrived at this conclusion by examining the spatial distribution of LMC star clusters of similar age, by comparing the derived spectroscopic metallicity with that expected for an outside-in galaxy formation scenario, by considering the cluster internal dynamical stage as inferred from its derived structural parameters and by estimating the circular velocity of a disc that rotates with the corresponding star cluster radial velocity at the cluster's deprojected distance, which resulted to be nearly 60 per cent higher than that of most of the outer LMC disc clusters.

The Minimum Mass of Rotating Main-sequence Stars and its Impact on the Nature of Extended Main-sequence Turnoffs in Intermediate-age Star Clusters in the Magellanic Clouds∗

Abstract Extended main-sequence turnoffs (eMSTOs) are a common feature in color–magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of young and intermediate-age star clusters in the Magellanic Clouds. The nature of eMSTOs is still debated. The most popular scenarios are extended star formation and ranges of stellar rotation rates. Here, we study implications of a kink feature in the main sequence (MS) of young star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). This kink shows up very clearly in new Hubble Space Telescope observations of the 700 Myr old cluster NGC 1831 and is located below the region in the CMD where multiple or wide MSs, which are known to occur in young clusters and thought to be due to varying rotation rates, merge together into a single MS. The kink occurs at an initial stellar mass of 1.45 ± 0.02 M ⊙; we posit that it represents a lower limit to the mass below which the effects of rotation on the energy output of stars are rendered negligible at the metallicity of these clusters. Evaluating the positions of stars with this initial mass in CMDs of massive LMC star clusters with ages of ∼1.7 Gyr that feature wide eMSTOs, we find that such stars are located in a region where the eMSTO is already significantly wider than the MS below it. This strongly suggests that stellar rotation cannot fully explain the wide extent of eMSTOs in massive intermediate-age clusters in the Magellanic Clouds. A distribution of stellar ages still seems necessary to explain the eMSTO phenomenon.

Blue Straggler Stars Beyond the Milky Way. III. Detection of Evolved Blue Straggler Candidates in Large Magellanic Cloud Clusters

Abstract We analyze Hubble Space Telescope observations of nine Large Magellanic Cloud star clusters with ages of 1–2 Gyr to search for evolved counterparts of blue straggler stars. Near the red clump regions in the clusters’ color–magnitude diagrams, we find branches of evolved stars that are much brighter than normal evolved stars. We examine the effects of photometric artifacts, differential reddening, and field contamination. We conclude that these bright evolved stars cannot be explained by any of these effects. Our statistical tests show that the contributions of photometric uncertainties, crowding effects, and differential reddening to these bright evolved stars are insufficient to fully explain their presence. Based on isochrone fitting, we have also ruled out the possibility that these bright evolved stars could be reproduced by an internal chemical abundance spread. The spatial distributions of the bright evolved stars exhibit clear concentrations that cannot be explained by homogeneously distributed field stars. This is further confirmed based on Monte Carlo-based tests. By comparing our observations with stellar evolution models, we find that the masses of most of the bright evolved stars do not exceed twice the average mass of normal evolved stars. We suggest that these bright evolved stars are, in fact, evolved blue straggler stars.

Discovery of Extended Main Sequence Turnoffs in Galactic Open Clusters

Abstract The color–magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of Galactic open clusters are widely considered to be the prototypes of single stellar populations. By using photometry in ultraviolet and optical bands we discovered that the nearby young cluster NGC 6705 (M11) exhibits an extended main-sequence turnoff (eMSTO) and a broadened main sequence (MS). This is the first evidence of multiple stellar populations in a Galactic open cluster. By using high-resolution Very Large Telescope (VLT) spectra we provide direct evidence that the multiple sequences along the CMD correspond to stellar populations with different rotation rates. Specifically, the blue MS (bMS) is formed of slow-rotating stars, while red-MS (rMS) stars are fast rotators. Moreover, we exploit photometry from Gaia data release 2 (DR2) to show that three Galactic open clusters, namely NGC 2099, NGC 2360, and NGC 2818, exhibit the eMSTO, thus suggesting that it is a common feature among these objects. Our previous work on the Large Magellanic Cloud star cluster NGC 1818 shows that slowly and rapidly rotating stars populate the bMS and rMS observed in its CMD. The similarities between M11 and the young clusters of the Magellanic Clouds (MCs) suggest that rotation is responsible for the appearance of multiple populations in the CMDs of both Milky Way open clusters and MCs young clusters.

The search for multiple populations in Magellanic Cloud clusters -- IV. Coeval multiple stellar populations in the young star cluster NGC 1978

We have recently shown that the $\sim2$ Gyr old Large Magellanic Cloud star cluster NGC 1978 hosts multiple populations in terms of star-to-star abundance variations in [N/Fe]. These can be seen as a splitting or spread in the sub-giant and red giant branches (SGB and RGB) when certain photometric filter combinations are used. Due to its relative youth, NGC 1978 can be used to place stringent limits on whether multiple bursts of star-formation have taken place within the cluster, as predicted by some models for the origin of multiple populations. We carry out two distinct analyses to test whether multiple star-formation epochs have occurred within NGC 1978. First, we use UV CMDs to select stars from the first and second population along the SGB, and then compare their positions in optical CMDs, where the morphology is dominantly controlled by age as opposed to multiple population effects. We find that the two populations are indistinguishable, with age differences of $1\pm20$ Myr between them. This is in tension with predictions from the AGB scenario for the origin of multiple populations. Second, we estimate the broadness of the main sequence turnoff (MSTO) of NGC 1978 and we report that it is consistent with the observational errors. We find an upper limit of $\sim$65 Myr on the age spread in the MSTO of NGC 1978. This finding is in conflict with the age spread scenario as origin of the extended MSTO in intermediate age clusters, while it fully supports predictions from the stellar rotation model.

No Evidence of Chemical Abundance Variations in the Intermediate-age Cluster NGC 1783

Abstract We have analyzed multi-passband photometric observations, obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope, of the massive (1.8 × 105 M ⊙), intermediate-age (1.8 Gyr-old) Large Magellanic Cloud star cluster NGC 1783. The morphology of the cluster’s red giant branch does not exhibit a clear broadening beyond its intrinsic width; the observed width is consistent with that owing to photometric uncertainties alone and independent of the photometric selection boundaries we applied to obtain our sample of red giant stars. The color dispersion of the cluster’s red giant stars around the best-fitting ridgeline is 0.062 ± 0.009 mag, which is equivalent to the width of 0.080 ± 0.001 mag derived from artificial simple stellar population tests, that is, tests based on single-age, single-metallicity stellar populations. NGC 1783 is comparably as massive as other star clusters that show clear evidence of multiple stellar populations. After incorporating mass-loss recipes from its current age of 1.8 Gyr to an age of 6 Gyr, NGC 1783 is expected to remain as massive as some other clusters that host clear multiple populations at these intermediate ages. If we were to assume that mass is an important driver of multiple population formation, then NGC 1783 should have exhibited clear evidence of chemical abundance variations. However, our results support the absence of any chemical abundance variations in NGC 1783.

The WAGGS project – I. The WiFeS Atlas of Galactic Globular cluster Spectra

We present the WiFeS Atlas of Galactic Globular cluster Spectra, a library of integrated spectra of Milky Way and Local Group globular clusters. We used the WiFeS integral field spectrograph on the Australian National University 2.3 m telescope to observe the central regions of 64 Milky Way globular clusters and 22 globular clusters hosted by the Milky Way's low mass satellite galaxies. The spectra have wider wavelength coverage (3300 {\AA} to 9050 {\AA}) and higher spectral resolution (R = 6800) than existing spectral libraries of Milky Way globular clusters. By including Large and Small Magellanic Cloud star clusters, we extend the coverage of parameter space of existing libraries towards young and intermediate ages. While testing stellar population synthesis models and analysis techniques is the main aim of this library, the observations may also further our understanding of the stellar populations of Local Group globular clusters and make possible the direct comparison of extragalactic globular cluster integrated light observations with well understood globular clusters in the Milky Way. The integrated spectra are publicly available via the project website.

Determination of Reddening and Age for Ten Large Magellanic Cloud Star Clusters from Integrated Spectroscopy

We present flux-calibrated integrated spectra in the optical range (3700–6800 Å) obtained at Complejo Astronómico El Leoncito (CASLEO, Argentina) for a sample of 10 concentrated star clusters belonging to the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). No previous data exist for two of these objects (SL 142 and SL 624), while most of the remaining clusters have been only poorly studied. We derive simultaneously foreground E(B − V) reddening values and ages for the cluster sample by comparing their integrated spectra with template LMC cluster spectra and with two different sets of simple stellar population models. Cluster reddening values and ages are also derived from both available interstellar extinction maps and by using diagnostic diagrams involving the sum of equivalent widths of some selected spectral features and their calibrations with age, respectively. For the studied sample, we derive ages between 1 Myr and 240 Myr. In an effort to create a spectral library at the LMC metallicity level with several clusters per age range, the cluster sample presented here stands out as a useful complement to previous ones.

Discovery of a loose star cluster in the Large Magellanic Cloud

Abstract We present results for an up-to-date uncatalogued star cluster projected towards the Eastern side of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) outer disc. The new object was discovered from a search of loose star cluster in the Magellanic Clouds’ (MCs) outskirts using kernel density estimators on Washington CT1 deep images. Contrarily to what would be commonly expected, the star cluster resulted to be a young object (log(t yr−1) = 8.45) with a slightly subsolar metal content (Z = 0.013) and a total mass of 650 M⊙. Its core, half-mass and tidal radii also are within the frequent values of LMC star clusters. However, the new star cluster is placed at the Small Magellanic Cloud distance and at 11.3 kpc from the LMC centre. We speculate with the possibility that it was born in the inner body of the LMC and soon after expelled into the intergalactic space during the recent Milky Way/MCs interaction. Nevertheless, radial velocity and chemical abundance measurements are needed to further understand its origin, as well as extensive search for loose star clusters in order to constrain the effectiveness of star cluster scattering during galaxy interactions.

Catalogue of Large Magellanic Cloud star clusters observed in the Washington photometric system

The main goal of this study is to compile a catalogue including the fundamental parameters of a complete sample of 277 star clusters (SCs) of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) observed in the Washington photometric system, including 82 clusters very recently studied by us. All the clusters' parameters such as radii, deprojected distances, reddenings, ages and metallicities have been obtained by appyling essentially the same procedures which are briefly described here. We have used empirical cumulative distribution functions to examine age, metallicity and deprojected distance distributions for different cluster subsamples of the catalogue. Our new sample made up of 82 additional clusters recently studied by us represents about a 40% increase in the total number of LMC SCs observed up to now in the Washington photometric system. In particular, we report here the fundamental parameters obtained for the first time for 42 of these clusters. We found that single LMC SCs are typically older than multiple SCs. Both single and multiple SCs exhibit asymmetrical distributions in log (age). We compared cluster ages derived through isochrone fittings obtained using different models of the Padova group. Although $t_G$ and $t_B$ ages obtained using isochrones from Girardi et al. (2002) and Bressan et al. (2012), respectively, are consistent in general terms, we found that $t_B$ values are not only typically larger than $t_G$ ages but also that Bressan et al.'s age uncertainties are clearly smaller than the corresponding Girardi et al. values.

The dynamical importance of binary systems in young massive star clusters

AbstractCharacterization of the binary fractions in star clusters is of fundamental importance for many fields in astrophysics. Observations indicate that the majority of stars are found in binary systems, while most stars with masses greater than 0.5M⊙ are formed in star clusters. In addition, since binaries are on average more massive than single stars, in resolved star clusters these systems are thought to be good tracers of (dynamical) mass segregation. Over time, dynamical evolution through two-body relaxation will cause the most massive objects to migrate to the cluster center, while the relatively lower-mass objects remain in or migrate to orbits at greater radii. This process will globally dominate a cluster’s stellar distribution. However, close encounters involving binary systems may disrupt ‘soft’ binaries. This process will occur more frequently in a cluster’s central, dense region than in its periphery, which may mask the effects of mass segregation. Using high resolution Hubble Space Telescope observations, combined with sophisticated N-body simulations, we investigate the radial distributions of the main-sequence binary fractions in massive young Large Magellanic Cloud star clusters. We show that binary disruption may play an important role on very short timescales, depending on the environmental conditions in the cluster cores. This may lead to radial binary fractions that initially decline in the cluster centers, which is contrary to the effects expected from dynamical mass segregation.
