Study on Campus Landscape Micro-Renewal Design under Sustainable Design Theory: The Hainan University Youth Memory Square Renovation Project

With the rise of global sustainable development, sustainable design theory is increasingly applied to landscape design. Campus landscape micro-renewal is closely tied to sustainable design. As important places for teachers and students to work and study, campuses require thoughtful landscape micro-renewal design based on sustainable design theory. This paper uses sustainable design theory to study campus landscape micro-renewal design, focusing on three main aspects: First, it analyzes the policy and industry background of sustainable design theory to clarify the needs for campus landscape renewal. Second, it examines the connotation of sustainable design theory and micro-renewal design theory, elucidating their application methods and strategies in campus landscape micro-renewal. Third, it discusses the practical application of sustainable design theory in campus landscape micro-renewal, proposing design strategies based on specific project conditions. The case study of the Youth Memory Square at Hainan University aims to further promote sustainable campus development and provide design ideas for future campus landscape micro-renewal projects.

Using Importance–Performance Analysis to Reveal Priorities for Multifunctional Landscape Optimization in Urban Parks

In the context of urban renewal, residents have presented elevated expectations for the quality of urban parks, necessitating the optimization of parks’ multifunctional landscapes. Transforming residents’ preferences for landscape services into a prioritized index for multifunctional landscape renewal poses a significant challenge. This study addresses this research gap by integrating importance–performance analysis (IPA) with residents’ perception evaluations of landscape services. We establish an index system to evaluate perceptions of urban park landscape services. By employing the importance–performance analysis framework, we identify landscape service types that exhibit high importance but low satisfaction levels, thereby establishing priorities for multifunctional landscape renewal. Using Guangzhou’s urban parks as a case study, our findings reveal variations in users’ demands for different landscape services and differences in demand among various user groups for similar services. Users assign utmost importance to safety services while expressing the highest satisfaction with physical and mental health or microclimate regulation services. Significant disparities exist between middle-aged/elderly groups and young people regarding perceptions of social interaction, waste disposal, and sense of belonging services. Our results demonstrate that IPA analysis can elucidate priorities for multifunctional landscape renewal, facilitate public participation in improving urban park landscapes, and provide decision-making support for optimizing these landscapes.

Research on Landscape Renewal Strategies for the Relic Site of Wuxi Maoxin Flour Mill Based on Extentics

As the epitome of urban industrial civilization, urban industrial heritage has important social, historical, technological, aesthetic and other multiple values. How to rationally update and reuse it has become an important part of the urban development process. This paper takes the relic site of Wuxi Maoxin Flour Mill as an example. Through site inspection and questionnaire distribution, it explores its spatial status and existing problems from a landscape perspective, uses multiple regression analysis to obtain relevant influencing factors, use Extension innovation methods to deal with site contradictiory problems and generate multiple update strategies, and finally select the most appropriate update strategy through the superiority evaluation method. Using qualitative and quantitative research methods, a more scientific and targeted renewal plan is proposed to provide methodological reference for industrial heritage landscape renewal research.

Research and evaluation on students' emotional attachment to campus landscape renewal coupling emotional attachment scale and public sentiment analysis: a case study of the "Heart of Forest" in Beijing Forestry University.

In the era of stock renewal, the construction of university campuses in China's first-tier cities has shifted from demolition and construction to renewal and upgrading, in which public landscape space is the main environment for students' daily life, learning and entertainment. Especially during the outbreak of the recent COVID-19 epidemic, it has become an important way for students to interact with nature and obtain emotional healing. In the existing studies, there is a lack of discussion on the correlation between the spatial characteristics of the updated campus landscape and students' emotional attachment, and there are few quantitative studies. Based on this, this paper takes the "Heart of Forest" landscape space as an example, and integrates multi-dimensional quantitative methods including emotional attachment scale and public semantic analysis to study and evaluate the characteristics of landscape space that affect students' emotional attachment. The results show that: (1) Overall, the landscape space renewal of the Heart of Forest provides students with positive emotional experiences and effectively enhances students' emotional attachment as well as sense of belonging to the campus. (2) Among them, the material characteristics of the site including nature-related elements, materials, structures play a positive role in promoting the vast majority of students in the process of establishing emotional attachment, which is particularly obvious for students majoring in landscape, architecture and urban planning. (3) Whether the public social space can effectively provide students with a good emotional experience is closely related to the frequency and purpose of students' use of the space. (4) The interactive characteristics such as changeability and playability fail to promote emotional attachment because of lacking of management and maintenance. The renewal and transformation of the "Heart of Forest" landscape space is generally successful in promoting students' emotional attachment, and provides a reference for the future campus landscape renewal design from different angles. In addition, the quantitative study of emotional attachment constructed in this paper coupled with multi-dimensional data provides a method for the evaluation of students' emotional experience of campus landscape.

Gentrifying rural community development: A case study of Bama Panyang River Basin in Guangxi, China

Rural gentrification is deeply characterized by institutional context and spatiotemporal heterogeneity. Based on a diachronic field investigation, this paper constructs an analytical framework for gentrifying rural community development (GRCD) with a “community” theoretical perspective and analytical approach, defines the concept of GRCD, and analyzes the main characteristics, formation mechanism and regulation path of a typical gentrifying rural community in the Panyang River Basin of Bama County, Guangxi. Driven by factors such as the complex flow and heterogeneous living space practices of the host-guest community, the longevity “myth” led by commercial capital and consumption demand, and multiple action logics and desertification community governance, great changes have occurred in the social space and material landscape of the rural longevity community. Such changes include comprehensive reconstruction of the resident population, surface interaction and social separation of the host-guest community, residential structure change and settlement landscape renewal, and delocalization of the healing landscape and lifestyle changes. We propose policy insights in three areas: public and localization institutional arrangements, shared and comfortable gentrifying rural community making, and inclusive and synergistic gentrifying rural community governance. Through these aspects, we provide insights from the Chinese case for the gentrification and community development of rural areas in the Global South.

Inheritance and Innovation of National Industrial Heritage - Taking the Landscape Architecture of Bengbu Baoxing Flour Mill as an Example

In recent years, people’s understanding of the protection and renewal of industrial heritage has become more and more profound. Founded by Yang Shucheng, a national industrialist, Bengbu Baoxing Flour Factory is an important part of the modern national industry in the Huaihe River Basin of China. In the industrial heritage renewal design of the factory area, the design concept of landscape renewal is determined through the study of its historical background and existing industrial heritage. Through the analysis of landscape structure, functional zoning, traffic system, vegetation system, and building facade system, the design methods of landscape renewal and transformation are explained. At the same time as the design and renovation, the exploration and practice of industrial revival and social renewal in the region are introduced. Through these practices, the feasibility of protection and renewal of national industrial heritage is discussed.

Research-Based Design Approaches in Historic Garden Renovation

The renewal of historic gardens, landscapes, and sites has grown to be a current issue in Central and Eastern Europe. Based on scientific research, the Department of Garden Art of the Szent István University, Faculty of Landscape Architecture and Urbanism has been dealing with landscape renewal since 1963 on regional, settlement, and garden scales, too. More than 50 years of experience has already proved the advantage of such a research-based design approach in garden and landscape renewal processes, Landscape Architecture has developed from a very practical basis. The purpose of this paper is to show the most significant conclusions of our historic garden research of castle gardens from the Carpathian Basin, focusing on the importance of visual connections designed initially on the sites. Using case studies, the paper intends to explore how proper landscape design in historic environments is achieved. The historical value cannot be simplified or understood as the notion of “old”, the heritage being represented by the all-time valuable garden features and elements, independent from their formation in time. In addition to the historical authenticity of the actual use, the social needs and sustainability are important aspects, which must be integrated into heritage protection and reclamation.

Floating architecture in the landscape: climate change adaptation ideas, opportunities and challenges

ABSTRACTOpportunities exist for radical strategies, driven by spatial planning, to adapt our urban fabric to climate change. Floating developments are one such innovation. This phenomenon and its ideas are driven by a variety of societal forces, including by population pressure, rapid urbanisation, the resulting need for additional housing inventory, by urban adaptation strategies to counter fluvial flooding and sea level rise, plus interests in urban landscape renewal. We reflect on seventeen projects in five countries and note that, to date, it is inner city harbours or industrial areas in decline that are being targeted for floating communities. These can add renewal, recreational and landscape value, while simultaneously expanding the existing urban housing stock.

Landscape renewal of urban public space under the concept of sustainable development: a case study of Guilin city

With the theory of “sustainable development” as the theoretical support, the public space landscape of Guilin City is taken as the research object, and from the perspective of landscape architecture, the public space landscape and the non-sustainability issues are deeply analyzed.Guilin city has been deeply investigated and studied.According to various types of public space landscape, five problems are concluded:landscape space problem, landscape energy consumption problem, landscape greening and planting problem, landscape rainwater resources digestion and utilization problem and landscape pollution reduction and noise reduction problem.The smooth solution of these five problems can promote the improvement of the urban environment and create sustainable urban public space.

Diversification of Land Surface Temperature Change under Urban Landscape Renewal: A Case Study in the Main City of Shenzhen, China

Unprecedented rapid urbanization in China during the past several decades has been accompanied by extensive urban landscape renewal, which has increased the urban thermal environmental risk. However, landscape change is a sufficient but not necessary condition for land surface temperature (LST) variation. Many studies have merely highlighted the correlation between landscape pattern and LST, while neglecting to comprehensively present the spatiotemporal diversification of LST change under urban landscape renewal. Taking the main city of Shenzhen as a case study area, this study tracked the landscape renewal and LST variation for the period 1987–2015 using 49 Landsat images. A decision tree algorithm suitable for fast landscape type interpretation was developed to map the landscape renewal. Analytical tools that identified hot-cold spots, the gravity center, and transect of LST movement were adopted to identify LST changes. The results showed that the spatial variation of LST was not completely consistent with landscape change. The transformation from Green landscape to Grey landscape usually increased the LST within a median of 0.2 °C, while the reverse transformation did not obviously decrease the LST (the median was nearly 0 °C). The median of LST change from Blue landscape to Grey landscape was 1.0 °C, corresponding to 0.5 °C in the reverse transformation. The imbalance of LST change between the loss and gain of Green or Blue landscape indicates the importance of protecting natural space, where the benefits in terms of temperature mitigation cannot be completely substituted by reverse transformation.

Exploring some of the myths of land use change: Can rural to urban migration drive declines in biodiversity?

Forest transition theory describes a reversal in land-use trends for a given area, from a period of net forest area loss, to a period of net forest area gain. Some assume that such forest gain necessarily equates with biodiversity conservation. We question this assumption, based on research conducted in Oaxaca, Mexico. In Oaxaca's northern highlands, low intensity forest use and rotational ( milpa) agriculture have led to pronounced spatial heterogeneity in forest structure and composition, and created a high-biodiversity forest–agriculture mosaic. In the Zapotec community of San Juan Evangelista Analco and the Chinantec community of Santiago Comaltepec, as across much of Oaxaca, fewer people are farming; farmers are cultivating less land, working closer to settlements, and growing fewer crop varieties. Widespread agricultural abandonment has initiated unprecedented changes in ecological succession, patch size, and edge effects, which we speculate will be having an impact on the biodiversity of the landscape mosaic. Our work suggests that the decline of land use activity may result in a gradual loss of the forest–agriculture mosaic, leading to localised declines in biodiversity, despite (or because of) extensive forest resurgence. These findings support the view that indigenous cultures in Oaxaca and Mexico should not be seen as an environmental constraint but rather as an agent of landscape renewal that allows for both cultural and biological diversity to flourish, a reality that national and international conservation bodies need to more fully recognise and incorporate into policy.

Groundwork – a case study in landscape and amenity management

Abstract The Groundwork trusts have now been in operation for well over a decade and have implemented a wide range of projects across England and Wales. The origins and purposes of Groundwork are traced, and an overview of the types of project undertaken is presented. The relationship of the trusts to public and private sector funding, and the kinds of partnership involved, are examined. Many successes have been achieved in landscape renewal, although there have been some frictions with local authorities, and it is still difficult to make objective assessments of value for money or performance across a wide range of criteria. Nevertheless, the network of Groundwork trusts looks set to continue to offer a broad and flexible approach to environmental management.

Recuperation of the Quiñones Stream. Design of a recreation park. Madrid-Spain

The project described in this article not only treats the landscape renewal of deteriorated areas of the Quinones Stream, but also details its great recreative potential resulting from its proximity to the Dehesa Boyal and El Soto de Vinuelas, both ecologically praiseworthy. The project area is located in the municipal county of San Sebastian de los Reyes, being its environmental protection office the entity requesting the realization of this project as part of its Recover the Environment Program. The tasks considered in the project can be grouped as follows: — Recuperation of the streambed. — Landscape design of recreation areas. — Revegetation of the area using both native and ornamental plants. — Improvement of the paths. — Installation of recreation equipment.
