Landscape tools to support the educational use of school grounds

Recent years have seen an increasing emphasis on child-friendly concepts in landscape architecture and urban planning, as well as a growing emphasis on school grounds and environmental education, both in terms of pedagogy and landscape design. School grounds provide places for active engagement with the environment, for experiencing what is taught in class, and, are therefore of particular importance for education and for building children's connection with nature. The aim of this research is to develop a set of landscape architecture tools that can be used to promote child-friendly and education-centered design of school grounds. The research collects and organises the different school ground features, drawing on literature research, and the analysis of the Framework Curriculum. The toolkit presented in this paper lists and evaluates each feature according to its function, its relevance to school subjects and the specific knowledge or skills it can help to acquire, its space requirements and feasibility. To conclude, school grounds offer opportunities for teaching almost any subject and can therefore be linked to educational activities in multiple ways. The results of this research are to be developed into design guidelines in order to be used by designers and teachers alike, to help develop school grounds contributing to the well-being and environmental awareness of new generations.

Urban green spaces: the role of greenery and natural elements in promoting visitors’ attachment and well-being

Abstract This study examines the relationship between the presence of greenery and natural elements in urban green spaces (UGSs), and visitors‘ attachment, and well-being. Four UGSs in Gaza City were selected based on criteria that ensured representation of various types, sizes, locations, and green features. A survey instrument was designed to assess visitors‘ perceptions of greenery and natural elements, attachment to UGSs, and well-being. The survey was validated by seven experts in landscape architecture and urban planning. Results show that visitors‘ perceptions of greenery and natural elements significantly affect their place attachment, happiness, health, and motivation to visit. The provision and maintenance of greenery and natural elements in UGSs should be a priority for urban planners and policymakers to create and maintain green spaces that are beneficial for visitors‘ well-being. These findings have important implications for urban planning and design in promoting sustainable and healthy urban environments. Further research is needed to investigate the potential causal relationships between visitors‘ perceptions, and their well-being, and to evaluate the effectiveness of interventions aimed at improving these perceptions.

Spatial interventions and built environment features in developing age-friendly communities from the perspective of urban planning and design

Population ageing is creating opportunities and challenges for many communities across the globe, as one in six people is expected to be older than 65 by 2050. Initiatives to develop age-friendly communities (AFC) have increased in popularity for more than two decades. While the physical environment and outdoor spaces are recognized as the core domain of the concept of AFC in the literature, most articles are published in the journals of ageing, gerontology, health and social policy and not in mainstream urban planning or design journals. The aim of the paper is to examine the spatial interventions and built-environment related discussions in the scholarly literature in the realm of AFC in the fields of landscape architecture and urban planning and identify gaps in the literature with the focus on spatial interventions. In addition, this paper aims to call urban planners and designers to action to be more engaged in the discussions and implementation of age-friendliness of communities. Findings suggest that urban planners and designers have the ability and power to contribute to the implementation of AFCs by raising awareness, changing attitude towards ageing issues, develop networks and collaboration, increase empathy, initiate and change policies, and put policies into action.

Urban Constructed Wetlands in Arid and Semiarid Zones

Abstract The development of societies and the increasing growth of recent constructions, especially in cities, have caused environmental issues, destruction, and reduction of natural resources and the environment, especially green and green-blue spaces. According to studies, in the past years, many parts of natural and even pristine surfaces and spaces in big cities have been turned into artificial, and impermeable spaces, which has aggravated environmental and ecological problems and also it has aggravated the aesthetic characteristics of the urban landscape, particularly in arid and semiarid areas. In this case, the studies show that identifying and applying natural ecosystems such as wetlands and their artificial types due to their multifunctional aspects and benefits, especially in urban areas, can be the basis for reducing many issues mentioned. Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to this critical issue and do more research to know different types of constructed wetland ecosystems along with their services and values. The primary aim of this research is to identify the values and services of this ecosystem and to examine the diverse patterns of constructed wetlands in order to extract and design simple patterns of construcred wetlands. We want to know their role and position in landscape architecture and urban planning and design process. Also, this study aims to examine the potencial and possibillity of building constructed wetlands in urban areas particularly in arid areas and Mediterranean regions, according to Koppen climate classiffication. In this regard, the theoretical framework is provided based on the study of specialized texts and the study of similar foreign case studies and diverse patterns of urban wetlands with their different functions. These reviews have been done in a specific format consisting of some main aspects, such as the function and supply sources of wetlands. The final result and extractted simplified patterns, according to case studies, can be considered as a framework for designing and planning urban constructed wetlands and a guide for planning and designing a landscape consisting of this element, especially in areas with arid, semiarid, and Mediterranean climates with hot and dry summers.

A prediction method of soil environmental pollutants in landscape architecture planning based on data clustering

Aiming at the problem of low prediction accuracy in the prediction of soil environmental pollutants in landscape architecture, a prediction method of soil environmental pollutants in landscape architecture planning based on data clustering is designed. Firstly, through the soil pollution evaluation standard in landscape architecture planning, the pollution index system is constructed to obtain the pollution index data. Then, the consistency pre-processing of the obtained pollution index data is carried out, and the data features are extracted with the help of regionalised variables and variogram. Finally, according to the feature extraction results, the pollution weight is determined by Nemero index, and the pollution grade is divided by data clustering method. According to the pollution trend, the prediction model of pollutant soil pollution degree is constructed to complete the prediction. The results show that the proposed method can effectively improve the prediction accuracy of soil pollution.

Research on the Application of Digital Design in Landscape Architecture

The progress of digital planning and design of landscape gardens is investigated. Today design is inseparable from the assistance of a computer. However, the progress of digital planning and design of the landscape is behind the rapid development of technology. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to find out how the common application software is used in landscape architecture design as the main design application method. In each stage of landscape architecture planning and design, designers can use today's information technology and various software to carry out a topographic survey, environmental analysis, planning, and design. Computer-aided drawing provides convenience for designers. The result shows a reference value to maximize the application role and value of digital design in landscape design.

Developing Human-Centered Urban Digital Twins for Community Infrastructure Resilience: A Research Agenda.

Urban digital twins (UDTs) have been identified as a potential technology to achieve digital transformative positive urban change through landscape architecture and urban planning. However, how this new technology will influence community resilience and adaptation planning is currently unclear. This article: (1) offers a scoping review of existing studies constructing UDTs, (2) identifies challenges and opportunities of UDT technologies for community adaptation planning, and (3) develops a conceptual framework of UDTs for community infrastructure resilience. This article highlights the need for integrating multi-agent interactions, artificial intelligence, and coupled natural-physical-social systems into a human-centered UDTs framework to improve community infrastructure resilience.

Garden Landscape Design Method in Public Health Urban Planning Based on Big Data Analysis Technology.

Aiming at the goal of high-quality development of the landscape architecture industry, we should actively promote the development and integration of digital, networked, and intelligent technologies and promote the intelligent and diversified development of the landscape architecture industry. Due to the limitation of drawing design technology and construction method, the traditional landscape architecture construction cannot really understand the public demands, and the construction scheme also relies on the experience and subjective aesthetics of professionals, resulting in improper connection between design and construction. At present, under the guidance of the national strategy, under the background of the rapid development of digital technologies such as 5G, big data, cloud computing, Internet of Things, and digital twins, the high integration of landscape architecture construction and digital technology has led to the transformation of the production mode of landscape architecture construction. Abundant professional data and convenient information processing platform enable landscape planners, designers, and builders to evaluate the whole life cycle of the project more scientifically and objectively and realize the digitalization of the whole process of investigation, analysis, design, construction, operation, and maintenance. For the landscape architecture industry, the significance of digital technology is not only to change the production tools but also to update the environmental awareness, design response, and construction methods, which makes the landscape architecture planning and design achieve the organic combination of qualitative and quantitative and also makes the landscape architecture discipline more scientific and rational. In this paper, the new method of combining grey relational degree with machine learning is used to provide new guidance for traditional landscape planning by using big data information in landscape design and has achieved very good results. The article analyzes the guidance of landscape architecture design under the big data in China and provides valuable reference for promoting the construction of landscape architecture in China.

Analysis and Exploration of the Current Situation of Modern Landscape Architecture Planning and Construction Problems — Taking Zhuhai Yuanming New Garden as an Example

This paper discusses and analyzes the current situation of domestic urban landscape architecture planning and design, and takes the Yuanming new garden, a typical modern landscape architecture in Zhuhai, as an example. Based on the bibliometric analysis and the fund research analysis of Wanfang Data Kehui platform, this paper combs the frontier and development trend of the current landscape architecture planning and design research. Secondly, through the field investigation of Zhuhai Yuanming new garden and the visual analysis of the data platform, this paper discusses the current situation, problems in planning practice, and suggestions to be improved.

A Digital Planning Tool for Shaping Up the Landscaping Architecture

Landscape architecture is a comparatively new concept and is gaining prominence in town and country planning exercises. People marveled at the design of new towns when the infrastructure looks nice and well placed. However, when the planning exercise is not done properly this results in the implementation of poor infrastructure with narrow roads, lack of green spaces, no parking spots, congested streets and so. Architects are still using traditional hand drawing for their designs and sketches which have several limitations. Developing a landscape architecture planning system with appropriate tools will facilitate architects’ tasks and others to have an appropriate to ensure proper landscape planning without unnecessarily wasting time manually. This paper aims to present a desktop application with features for generating appropriate cartography which allows users to place appropriate objects representing real-world urban structures and buildings. The Waterfall methodology was used to build and implement the proposed system. The latter is expected to help in the reduction of parking problems and increase the number of green areas in towns. The application proposed includes appropriate validation techniques to allow users to plan a site and made sure that the standards set for parking spaces and green areas are being respected.

Architectural and Landscape Garden Planning Integrated with Artificial Intelligence Parametric Analysis

Parametric design, driven by digital technology, has sparked extensive research and debate in the domains of architecture and urban planning, offering a new approach to issue solving. Architecture and landscape architecture, like architecture and urban planning, are disciplines that are part of the artificial environment. Architectural landscape design has begun to be influenced by parametric design. This study presents a more technical parametric design technique of architectural landscape design that involves artificial intelligence parametric analysis and proposes an architectural landscape planning and design method that incorporates artificial intelligence (AI) parametric analysis. This is a new discipline of concurrent design that complements and expands architectural landscape design methodologies and is based on artificial intelligence methods. This study integrates artificial intelligence parametric design theory and methodology into architectural landscape design and presents a parametric method appropriate for landscape architecture design based on architectural landscape architecture characteristics.

User Perception of Public Parks: A Pilot Study Integrating Spatial Social Media Data with Park Management in the City of Chicago

User-generated content (UGC) is a relatively young field of research; however, it has been proven useful in disciplines such as hospitality and tourism, to elicit public opinions of place usage. In landscape architecture and urban planning, UGC has been used to understand people’s emotions and movement in a space, while other areas and additional functions are yet to be discovered. This paper explores the capability of UGC in revealing city-scale park management problems and the applicability of social media as a future tool in bridging visitor feedback to city parks and recreation department staff. This research analyzed the spatial characteristics and patterns of Google Maps review quantity, rating score, and review comments. The results of this pilot study indicate the spatial and structural features of the Chicago parks and demonstrate distribution problems, financial investment priority concerns, park usage characteristics, and user preferences of the park attributes. Findings affirm that user-generated online reviews can be used as an alternative and self-reporting data source to effectively assess the natural performance and users’ experience of city parks and can potentially serve as an evaluative tool for public park management.

Longue Durée

New approaches to combine flood protection, soil regeneration and water management strategies with urban design, landscape architecture and spatial planning in delta regions cannot do without knowledge and understanding of history. To find a new balance between urbanization, climate change, geopolitical shifts, the energy transition in deltas it is crucial to understand the evaluation of the system from the past to what it is today and can be in the future. The logic of the relationship between design, engineering, science and governance on the one hand, and the logic with the natural system on the other, determined the current conditions and its performance. In the development of cities, at any time, there is the concept of Longue Durée recognizing the formative forces of nature and the relevance of historic concepts to take into account (Braudel, 1949). The main question of this issue is: How can interdisciplinary approaches of design, engineering, science and governance respond to the environmental crisis and steer upon the Longue Durée of the delta?

The use of transects for resilient design: core theories and contemporary projects

The concept of the transect is derived from a scientific method of investigating a sequence of environments by sampling geographical cross-sections of the target region. Many environmental theorists, including Patrick Geddes and Ian McHarg, have adopted the transect to pursue an ideal relationship between nature and human settlement. Transect planning provides an essential perspective on and transdisciplinary platform for mitigating today's urban problems and social changes. Transects have been especially widely used in urban resilience projects designed to prepare for future uncertainties stemming from climate change. In this context, this study reveals the strengths of the transect method for urban resilience and landscape sustainability in the current era. This study first examines the theoretical background of the transect as evidenced in the history of environmental planning, including in the work of Patrick Geddes and Ian McHarg, as well as the study of contemporary urbanism. Additionally, this work describes the distinctive characteristics of the transect method through an analysis of recent urban resilience projects. Historically, transect use has furthered the pursuit of a synergistic relationship between nature and human beings. Leading theorists have adopted different perspectives on the environment and pursued various philosophies of urban planning. Many urban and landscape projects have actively taken advantage of the transect method and its foundation in ecological thinking. Through an examination of certain contemporary urban resilience projects, the main characteristics of the transect method can be deduced, including: (1) multiscale and multidirectional analysis, (2) spatiotemporal design, and (3) heterogeneous patterning. This method-oriented research offers new insights into the current study of landscape ecology, landscape architecture, and environmental planning, and reveals the potential of the transect method for resilient design.
