INDONESIA’S EFFORT TO MEET WHO RECOMMENDATION ON EXCLUSIVE BREASTFEEDING 2012-2023

Background: The World Health Organization (WHO) provides policy recommendations related to exclusive breastfeeding that can be adopted by UN member states. In Indonesia, the government has issued a policy to support exclusive breastfeeding based on WHO recommendations. Objectives: To describe effort in exclusive breastfeeding governance in Indonesia from 2012 to 2023 according to WHO recommendations. Method: This research uses a descriptive qualitative methodology and relies on a literature review from a variety of sources, including books, journals, articles, websites, and more, to gather information about Indonesia's efforts to meet the WHO recommendations about exclusive breastfeeding from 2012 to 2023. Results: It showed that there were efforts in the community due to applied policies, such as the provision of lactation rooms in public facilities, the formation of Breastfeeding Support Groups, the training of breastfeeding counselors, and the establishment of the PelanggaranKode website to continue to support the exclusive breastfeeding program. Conclusion: There are efforts indicating that government policies are not yet optimal. Recommendations for future research should be more specific by exploring strategies for effective advocacy and policy change to support breastfeeding, as well as evaluating the impact of global health initiatives and programs that promote breastfeeding

Impact of a department-sponsored portable breast pump initiative at a single institution

Rationale and objectivesMany barriers to breastfeeding upon return to the workplace are reported by female radiologists, which have implications on maternal/infant health and physician burnout. The Department of Radiology at our institution piloted an initiative to provide a free portable breast pump to address these barriers. Materials and methodsAn anonymous voluntary 32-question survey assessing the impact of the portable pump on postpartum work-life integration was sent to all female radiologists and radiologists-in-training in the department from May 2023 to July 2023. ResultsA total of 59 surveys were completed (65 % response rate). Overall, respondents reported a positive or very positive impact of the pump on transitioning back to work (median 4.5/5 on a 5-point Likert scale), on their decision to continue breastfeeding when returning to work (median 4/5), and duration of breastfeeding (median 4/5). Use of the pump was reported as favorable, with utilization of the pump while simultaneously engaging in clinical work (median 4.5/5) obviating necessity of dedicated lactation rooms, and positive impact on daily productivity (median score of 4/5). Nearly all (94 %, 16/17) users of the portable pump had their lactational needs addressed while returning to work, compared to 54 % (6/13) of those returning from leave prior to the pump initiative (p = 0.003). Compared to those utilizing traditional lactational resources, those who utilized the portable pump were significantly less likely to miss educational opportunities (0 % vs 44 %, p = 0.03), or academic engagements due to lactational practices at work (0 % v 44 %, p = 0.01). ConclusionA department-sponsored portable breast pump initiative proved to be an effective resource to support physician breastfeeding and work-life integration.

Why is the lactation pod essential? a "Ruang Sehati" innovation pilot project for wellness tourism in Yogyakarta, Indonesia

Yogyakarta is a popular tourist destination in Indonesia, yet lactation rooms at public facilities are difficult to access and substandard. This will certainly have an impact on breastfeeding practices for mothers who travel through their daily activities in public areas. Researchers propose using "Ruang Sehati" lactation pods as a kind of wellness tourism in Yogyakarta. This study aims to determine participants' perceptions of the lactation pod. Descriptive analytical methods were used in this study. Twenty participants were involved with this purposive sampling technique. The study showed that lactation pod innovation is essential, including maintaining privacy, sufficient breastfeeding facilities, high accessibility, and place efficiency. This innovation is also a model that can be demonstrated nationally, thereby showing a portrait of wellness tourism in the city of Yogyakarta as an ideal tourist destination for mothers and children.

Optimization of Lactation Room Management for Vulnerable Groups to Provide Excellent Service at the Mahkamah Syar'iyah Blangkejeren: A Literature Review

The state is obliged to ensure that health services are provided for women, especially family planning (KB) services,pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum or exclusive breastfeeding. It cannot be denied that until now there are still many offices /companies that ignore the existence of lactation rooms. Whereas the obligation of work organizers to provide lactation space has been regulated in the Republic of Indonesia Minister of Health Regulation Number 15 of 2013. The regulation of procedures for providing breastfeeding space aims to provide protection to mothers in exclusive breastfeeding and fulfill children's rights to receive exclusive breastfeeding. The provision of this breastfeeding corner facility is devoted to meeting the needs of mothers and babies who still have to breastfeed, and at the same time aims to increase exclusive breastfeeding for babies as one of the main nutrients. This research discussed about how to optimize the lactation room for vulnerable groups to provide excellent service in Mahkamah Syar’iyah Blangkejeren.

Women's Perception Regarding Breastfeeding Support in Workplace: A Scoping Review

Background: Newborns mostly require breast milk. Women who choose to work are equally responsible for maintaining breastfeeding. Prior studies have identified variations in the time and intensity of breastfeeding before and after returning to work. Disparities exist in the assistance provided for women to breastfeed in the workplace, with past studies revealing insufficient facilities. This study intends to examine women's views on the support for breastfeeding in the workplace.Method: A scoping review was carried out using the PubMed, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect databases, following PRISMA procedures. The papers were selected based on specific criteria: they had to be cross-sectional and qualitative studies focusing on women's opinions of breastfeeding in the workplace. Additionally, the articles were to be written in English, give the entire text, and have been done between 2019 and 2023.Results: Ten publications were examined from different workplaces. The research examines different forms of work and workplaces. Women's views on breastfeeding support focus on instrumental support, such as inappropriate or unavailable lactation rooms, work hours and policies, lack of breastfeeding groups, facilities for breastfeeding and breast milk pumping, insufficient storage, inadequate childcare facilities, and lack of caregivers at home, which impede exclusive breastfeeding. Emotional support refers to the assistance provided by colleagues in the workplace. Form of information support, namely the absence of communication and information support. There is a common belief that breastfeeding is seen as a personal issue connected to one's knowledge and self-confidence. Cross-sectoral collaboration needs to be involved, including family, workplace commitment, and government support to support the success of breastfeeding in the workplace.

Mothers' Willingness to Use Workplace Lactation Supports: Evidence from Formally Employed Mothers in Central Kenya

BackgroundFormally employed mothers are vulnerable to early cessation of exclusive breastfeeding. Kenyan national policy requires employer-provided maternity benefits and workplace lactation supports. ObjectiveThe objective of this study was to evaluate willingness to use nationally mandated workplace lactation supports among formally employed women in Kenya. MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional survey among 304 mothers of children ages ≤12 mo in Naivasha, Kenya, who were currently formally employed and employed before delivery of the most recent child to assess availability of and willingness to use current and potential future workplace lactation supports. ResultsThe most available reported workplace lactation supports were schedule flexibility to arrive late or leave early (87.8%) or visit a child to nurse during lunch (24.7%), followed by company-funded community-based daycare (7.6%). Few (<4.0%) reported the availability of lactation rooms, on-site daycares, transportation to breastfeed during lunch, refrigerators for expressed milk, or manual or electric breastmilk pumps. If made available, >80% of mothers reported moderate or strong willingness to use flexible schedules to arrive late or leave early, break during lunch, and transportation to visit a child to nurse. A moderate proportion reported strong willingness to use on-site daycares (63.8%), company-funded community-based daycare (56.9%), on-site lactation rooms (60.5%), refrigeration for expressed milk (49.3%), manual (40.5%), and electric pumps (27.6%). Mothers expressed fear of missing production targets and reported more willingness to use on-site compared with off-site daycare to save transportation time but noted concerns about chemical exposures and early arrival times with young infants. Hesitations regarding the use of on-site lactation rooms included concerns about privacy, milk identification and storage, and use and sharing of pumps. ConclusionsFlexible schedules were the workplace lactation supports in highest demand among formally employed mothers. Maternal willingness to use lactation rooms, refrigeration, and pumping equipment was moderate to low, suggesting sensitization may help to increase demand as the implementation of Kenyan policies moves forward.

Public policy on breastfeeding among working mothers in Taiwan: comparison between two national surveys

BackgroundCreating a supportive breastfeeding environment after childbirth and enabling women to work with reassurance are essential in maternal care services. The study aimed to explore the effectiveness of the utilization rate of public and workplace lactation rooms in relation to the breastfeeding rate among postpartum women returning to work in Taiwan.MethodsThe study involved a secondary data analysis on 6,992 and 7,350 postpartum women surveyed in 2011 and 2016, respectively. Interviews were conducted with women six months postpartum. Logistic regression analysis was employed to calculate the odds ratio and investigate the differences in the utilization rates of public lactation rooms (PLR) and workplace lactation rooms (WLR) among working mothers over a five-year period, to confirm the effectiveness of public strategies.ResultsComparing the years 2011 and 2016, significant differences in the rates of exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) and any breastfeeding (ABF) among working mothers returning to work after an 8-week maternity leave, depending on whether they used PLR or WLR. The rates were higher in 2016 than in 2011. For mothers who used PLR, the breastfeeding rates for EBF at the second, fourth, and sixth months (2011 vs. 2016: 67.6% vs. 81.1%, 75.0% vs. 86.4%, 77.5% vs. 86.2%) and ABF at the second, fourth, and sixth months (2011 vs. 2016: 60.3% vs. 73.9%, 68.8% vs. 81.3%, 73.7% vs. 85.6%). For mothers who used WLR, the breastfeeding rates for EBF at the second, fourth, and sixth months (2011 vs. 2016: 51.3% vs. 58.7%, 54.7% vs. 61.4%, 57.5% vs. 59.3%) and ABF at the second, fourth, and sixth months (2011 vs. 2016: 48.4% vs. 57.0%, 52.3% vs. 60.5%, 54.1% vs. 62.4%). When comparing 2011 to 2016 from the second to the sixth month postpartum, adjusted odds ratios for EBF (PLR: 4.17-5.23 vs. 4.06-6.22, WLR: 1.71-1.83 vs. 1.30-1.61) and ABF (PLR: 6.44-7.02 vs. 9.27-9.90, WLR: 1.91-1.98 vs. 1.97-1.99) showed differences.ConclusionLactation support rooms play a vital role in motivating working mothers to sustain breastfeeding upon their return to work. Incentivizing businesses to build additional lactation rooms and offering breastfeeding resources is essential in striving to enhance the global breastfeeding rate.

Potential and Obstacles in Cultural Heritage Development in Tanjungpinang City

The city of Rebah is a place for tourists to visit. In the city of Rebah, there are several relics such as tombs, collapsed buildings, docks. The city of Rebah has an area of ​​4 hectares, has good views, the view from the pier directly shows the Carang river bridge and there are mangrove trees. In this research the author used qualitative methods. According to Bogdan and Taylor (1975:5) defines that "qualitative methods" are research procedures that produce descriptive data. In the potential that exists in the city of Rebah, there are several obstacles. The aim of this research is to determine the potential and obstacles in historical tourist attractions in the city of Rebah. The results of this research show that the city of Rebah has the potential to develop sports in the form of rock climbing, suspension bridges and restaurants. Apart from that, there are obstacles in the city of Rebah, the need for additional caretakers, lack of funds for the development of the city of Rebah, damage to supporting facilities such as toilets and lactation rooms.

Occupational Factors Associated With Time to Breastfeeding Discontinuation After Return to Work Among Female Anesthesiologists in China: A Nationwide Survey.

Breast milk is of great benefit to both infants and mothers. Due to occupational barriers, female physicians are at high risk of unintentionally discontinuing breastfeeding. However, evidence among anesthesiologists was limited. The purpose of this study was to investigate occupational factors associated with time to breastfeeding discontinuation among female anesthesiologists following maternity leave in China. We conducted a nationwide survey of female anesthesiologists who had given birth since January 1, 2015. A 60-item anonymous questionnaire was developed to collect information regarding breastfeeding practices and related factors. The questionnaire was revised based on the recommendations of 15 experts and feedback from the pilot survey. The survey was distributed by the Chinese Society of Anesthesiology. The completion rate was 57.9%. In total, 1364 responders were analyzed from all 31 provinces of Mainland China. In total, 1311 (96.1%) responders reported a reduction in breast milk supply on returning to work. Among the 1161 responders who discontinued breastfeeding, 836 (72.0%) did not achieve desired goals due to occupational factors. The median [interquartile range] of maternity leave length and breastfeeding duration were 5 [4-6] months and 10 [7-12] months, respectively. The following occupational factors were associated with longer time to breastfeeding discontinuation after adjusting for confounding effects of personal factors: length of maternity leave (hazard ratio [HR] per month 0.44; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.36-0.54; P < .001), pumping breast milk during work time (HR, 0.04; 95% CI, 0.02-0.08; P < .001), support from colleagues (HR, 0.92; 95% CI, 0.86-0.99; P = .032), and additional nonclinical activities (HR, 0.87; 95% CI, 0.77-0.98; P = .022). Trainees under supervision (HR, 1.20; 95% CI, 1.06-1.43; P = .005) and the need to remain in the operating room during cases (HR, 2.59; 95% CI, 1.09-6.12; P = .031) were associated with shorter time to breastfeeding discontinuation. Approximately 899 (65.9%) responders pumped breast milk during work time. Among them, reduction in pumping frequency (HR, 1.17; 95% CI, 1.00-1.36; P = .049) and difficulty in finding opportunities for pumping (HR, 2.34; 95% CI, 1.36-4.03; P = .002) were associated with shorter time to breastfeeding discontinuation. We identified modifiable occupational factors associated with time to breastfeeding discontinuation. These findings underscored the necessity of facilitating breastfeeding in the workplace, including encouraging longer maternity leave and breastfeeding breaks, considering the feasibility of pumping in daily case assignments, establishing supportive culture, providing lactation rooms, and offering nonclinical activities.

FAKTOR - FAKTOR YANG BERHUBUNGAN DENGAN KEBERHASILAN PEMBERIAN ASI EKSKLUSIF OLEH IBU BEKERJA DI KOTA DENPASAR

A working mother is frequently facing barriers in breastfeeding their babies. Several barriers in breastfeeding faced by the working mothers are the long duration of work, the lack of opportunities and support provided by the workplace for mothers to do the breast milk due to the unavailability of breastfeeding facilities such as lactation rooms, and the lack of knowledge of working mothers regarding lactation management. This study aims to determine the factors associated with the success of exclusive breastfeeding by working mothers in Denpasar City. This study was quantitative correlative research by using a cross-sectional design and purposive sampling technique. Data collection was carried out on 97 respondents who visited Puskesmas 1 Denpasar Utara, Puskesmas 1 Denpasar Timur, Puskesmas 2 Denpasar Barat, and Puskesmas 2 Denpasar Selatan. Data collection used knowledge, availability of lactation facilities at work, and husband's support questionnaires. The eta test and contingency coefficient were used for the data analysis. The results showed that there was no correlation between age (p=0,08), parity (p=0,132), baby's gender (p=0,501), socioeconomic status (p=0,111), type of mother's occupation (p=0,70), knowledge (p=0,338), availability of lactation facilities (p=0,3), and husband's support (p=0,180) with exclusive breastfeeding. However, distance (0,019) and duration of work (p=0,044) were associated with exclusive breastfeeding (p&lt;0,05). In conclusion, there is a relationship between distance and duration of work seem as predictors of exclusive breastfeeding by working mothers in Denpasar City. It is expected to increase knowledge of working mothers about the management of expressed breast milk, thus the exclusive breastfeeding can be achieved.

Consensus-building during the Becoming Breastfeeding Friendly (BBF) initiative in Samoa: A qualitative content analysis.

The Becoming Breastfeeding Friendly (BBF) initiative provides countries with an evidence-based toolbox to improve the national breastfeeding environment by assessing and developing a plan to effectively scale up well-coordinated national policies and programs. BBF is carried out by a multi-institutional, intersectoral committee of experts, convening across five committee meetings designed to produce policy recommendations that can be implemented in the country's context. Samoa successfully completed the BBF initiative in 2018, resulting in the institution of breastfeeding policy in hospitals and the establishment of lactation rooms within government ministries. An important step in informing the success of future breastfeeding scale-up initiatives is understanding how consensus is built. This study aimed to investigate how the BBF Samoa committee built consensus. We conducted a content analysis of audio recordings of three BBF Samoa meetings (meetings 1, 2 and 4), meeting minutes, and meeting notes using an a priori operational consensus-building framework. We used a combination of deductive and inductive approaches to: a) evaluate the data against existing, a priori criteria for consensus-building and b) identify emergent ways in which the BBF Samoa committee may have achieved consensus. We identified 6 themes, 2 meta-subthemes, and 16 subthemes. The 6 themes, largely defined by the a priori framework, represented key components of successful consensus-building. The 2 meta-subthemes described two overarching methods of consensus-building: "process-led" (i.e., inherent to the BBF process itself) and "organic" (unique/specific to the committee). Lastly, the 16 subthemes described more specific ways that the committee reached consensus. The detailed manualization of the BBF process, its reliance on data, and its transparent and engaged committee process were key for reaching consensus on BBF scores and recommendations in Samoa. Our study contributes to the understanding of how effective breastfeeding policy recommendations are made, using a methodology that can be applied beyond the topic of breastfeeding.

Informing the acoustical privacy of mothers’ rooms with measurement data

Mothers’ rooms (also referred to as lactation rooms) have become more prominent in workplaces in the United States in recent decades. Since the amendment of Fair Labor Standards Act in 2010, employers in the United States with more than 50 employees have been required to provide a non-restroom space for mothers to nurse or pump breast milk. Such spaces are often designed to offer privacy and comfort—however, little consideration has been given to the acoustical criteria that would be appropriate for these spaces. To inform the development of best practice criteria for sound isolation, a sample of different breast pump models from different manufacturers has been measured to estimate the range of sound power levels and spectral content associated with lactation pump noise. Comparisons are then made between pump noise levels and common workplace wall constructions to test the efficacy of published sound isolation criteria. Additional consideration is given to the unique usage of this space type in comparison to common adjacency types to propose a data-driven sound isolation criteria for mothers’ rooms. Results from this effort also aim to inform further work towards developing criteria for reverberation time and background noise levels in mothers’ rooms.

Nivel de conocimiento sobre lactancia materna en mujeres en periodo de lactancia

Introduction: Breastfeeding represents one of the main benefits for the newborn, the mother, and society, with the crucial need for education and support from the healthcare system to promote its practice. Objective: To evaluate the level of knowledge about breastfeeding among women in the lactation period. Material and Method: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted, using convenience sampling of 60 women in the lactation period. Among them, 30 were users of daycare facilities, and 30 were users of lactation rooms, with an age range of 21-42 years old. The COLM questionnaire was administered via Google Forms®. The level of knowledge about breastfeeding was evaluated using the following scale: sufficient (6-8), insufficient (5-3), and deficient (≤2). Results: The mean age was 29.10 years old, with an average knowledge level of 6.32 points. Married women with a bachelor's degree and actively employed predominated in both groups, lactation room users (60%) and daycare facilities users (76.7%), the knowledge level was sufficient. A significant association was found between the knowledge level, origin, and educational background. Conclusion: More than half of the participants demonstrated sufficient knowledge about breastfeeding, highlighting the reliance on internet resources and information provided by healthcare professionals.

The city, PKK leaders, and women’s empowerment

ABSTRACT This paper examines the strategic roles of leaders of state-organized women’s groups of the Pemberdayaan dan Kesejahteraan Keluarga (Family Welfare and Empowerment or PKK), in the development of Ruang Publik Terpadu Ramah Anak (Child-Friendly Integrated Public Spaces or RPTRA) in the province of Jakarta, Indonesia. This is a qualitative study undertaken via in-depth interviews with PKK leaders and relevant officials. It is also based on observations I made of RPTRA Mutiara and RPTRA Serdang Baru in Central Jakarta, between 2019 and 2022. I found that the PKK leaders have been able to influence the design of the RPTRA that are now equipped with lactation rooms that enable women to move outside and participate more easily in public spaces. These have promoted women’s empowerment, group formation and collective action and have focused on bringing women’s interests into the initial design of the RPTRA. This paper suggests that while “State Ibuism” continues to be an important concept, PKK leaders are showing signs of adopting new ideologies and practices that indicate progressive feminist thinking and directions that are important and need to be studied.

Access to Workplace Supports is Positively Associated with Exclusive Breastfeeding among Formally Employed Mothers in Kenya

Mothers in low-income settings who work in agricultural employment are challenged to meet breastfeeding (BF) recommendations. Recent legislation in Kenya mandates maternity leave and workplace supports, yet the relation of these benefits with BF practices is poorly understood. We evaluated the associations with workplace-provided BF supports and BF practices among formally employed mothers in Kenya. The availability of supports was hypothesized to be associated with a higher prevalence and greater odds of exclusive breastfeeding (EBF). We conducted repeated cross-sectional surveys among formally employed mothers at 1-4 d and 6, 14, and 36 wk (to estimate 24 wk) postpartum in Naivasha, Kenya. We used logistic regression adjusted for maternal age, education, physical burden of work, HIV status, and income to evaluate associations between workplace supports and EBF practices. Among formally employed mothers (n=564), those who used onsite workplace childcare were more likely to practice EBF than those who used community- or home-based childcare at both 6 wk (95.7% compared with 82.4%, P=0.030) and 14 wk (60.6% compared with 22.2%, P<0.001; adjusted OR: 5.11; 95% CI: 2.3, 11.7). Likewise, at 14 wk among mothers who currently used daycare centers, a higher proportion of mothers who visited daycare centers at or near workplaces practiced EBF (70.0%) than of those not visiting daycare centers (34.7%, P=0.005). EBF prevalence was higher among mothers with access to workplace private lactation spaces than among mothers without such spaces (84.6%compared with 55.6%, P=0.037), and among mothers who lived in workplace housing than those without onsite housing (adjusted OR: 2.06, 95% CI: 1.25, 3.41). Formally employed mothers in Kenya who have access to and use workplace-provided BF supports were more likely to practice EBF than mothers who lacked these supports. As the Kenya Health Act is implemented, lactation rooms, onsite housing and daycare, and transportation to visit children can all support BF and EBF among employed mothers.

Uncovering the Experience: Return to Work of Nurses After Parental Leave

IntroductionTo understand the experiences of emergency nurses who have returned to work after parental leave, specifically relating to the return to work transition, work-life balance, work engagement, and opportunities to continue human milk expression. MethodsNurses (N = 19) were recruited from 5 emergency departments within 1 hospital system in the United States Midwest. Nurses (n = 11) were eligible to participate in a one-on-one interview if they had returned from parental leave within 6 months of the interview date. Nurses (n = 8) were eligible to participate in a focus group if they had returned from parental leave within 2 years of the interview date. Interviews were structured and data collection concluded when researchers believed data saturation was reached. Interviews were audio recorded and transcribed verbatim. Data were analyzed using Braun and Clarke’s qualitative thematic analysis 6-phase framework. ResultsThree major themes from the data were identified: (1) work engagement, (2) lactation, and (3) childcare. Work engagement was broken down into the subthemes: lack of communication, perceived engagement expectations, and actual engagement. Lactation was broken down into the subthemes: the act of pumping, lactation breaks, and lactation rooms. The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic impact on return-to-work is described under each major theme. DiscussionOur findings provide insight into the unique challenges and experiences of nurses navigating parental leave and return-to-work in the emergency department. Strategies such as provision of managerial check-ins, return to work reorientation, lactation break coverage, enhanced supplementary lactation support, and leadership-provided accommodation may lighten the burden of these challenges and improve the returning nurse’s job satisfaction.

Workplace Lactation Support: A Cross-Sectional Study in a University Hospital and a Perinatal Network.

Return to work negatively affects the initiation and duration of breastfeeding. Our study’s objective was to assess the percentage of departments in Auvergne with an appropriate space for pumping milk at work. Our cross-sectional survey investigated the arrangements for facilitating the continuation of breastfeeding on return to work at all departments at the Clermont-Ferrand University Hospital Center and perinatal (obstetric and pediatric) departments in this region. Our principal endpoint was the percentage of departments reporting that they had a lactation room—a room where nursing mothers can express milk—and whether it met the criteria defined by the French Labor Code. Among 98 respondents, 44 departments (44.9%) did not offer lactation rooms; of the remaining 54 departments, only 11 rooms met the legal requirements. All perinatal departments offered lactation rooms. The availability of a lactation room was associated with other breastfeeding support, such as a break period for expressing milk (p < 0.0001) and the availability of a refrigerator to store it (p = 0.01). Almost half the responding departments did not offer a lactation room where mothers could breastfeed or pump their milk. Measures must be envisioned to facilitate the pumping of breast milk by French women returning to work.

Effects of lactation room quality on working mothers’ feelings and thoughts related to breastfeeding and work: a randomized controlled trial and a field experiment

BackgroundThe challenging combination of breastfeeding and work is one of the main reasons for early breastfeeding cessation. Although the availability of a lactation room (defined as a private space designated for milk expression or breastfeeding) is important in enabling the combination of breastfeeding and work, little is known about the effects of lactation room quality on mothers’ feelings and thoughts related to breastfeeding and work. We hypothesized that a high-quality lactation room (designed using the Theory of Supportive Design) would cause mothers to experience less stress, have more positive thoughts about milk expression at work, perceive more organizational support, and report more subjective well-being, than a low-quality lactation room.MethodsIn an online randomized controlled trial (Study 1), Dutch mothers (N = 267) were shown either a high-quality or a low-quality lactation room (using pictures and descriptions for the manipulation) and were then asked about their feelings and thoughts. In a subsequent field experiment (Study 2) we modified the lactations rooms in a large organization in Groningen, the Netherlands, to manipulate lactation room quality, and asked mothers (N = 61) who used either a high-quality or low-quality lactation room to fill out surveys to assess the dependent variables.ResultsThe online study showed that mothers exposed to the high-quality lactation room anticipated less stress, more positive cognitions about milk expression at work, more perceived organizational support, and more subjective well-being than mothers exposed to the low-quality lactation room (p < 0.05). Moreover, the effect of lactation room quality on perceived organizational support was especially pronounced for mothers who were higher in environmental sensitivity. The field experiment showed that use of the high-quality room led to less reported stress than use of the low-quality room (p < 0.05). We also found that mothers who were higher in environmental sensitivity perceived more control over milk expression at work and experienced more subjective well-being in the high-quality condition than in the low-quality condition (p < 0.05).ConclusionThe current studies show that not only the availability, but also the quality of lactation rooms is important in facilitating the combination of breastfeeding and work.

Implementation of Occupational Health and Safety Standards for Office Buildings in Universitas Airlangga Rectorate Building

Introduction: Universitas Airlangga office building rectorate includes a high-rise building that must have occupational health and safety (OHS) facilities and also its application must be in accordance with office building standards which applies to prevent accidents and occupational diseases. This study aims to determine OHS office buildings rectorate facilities, and to analyze OHS standards application for office buildings rectorate with applicable OHS office building standards. Methods: This research is an observational study. Data analysis using descriptive method with a cross sectional study design. The variables studied were OHS office building facilities in Universitas Airlangga Rectorate, and OHS standard application for in Universitas Airlangga office buildings rectorate. Data collection techniques are derived from primary data in OHS observations form facilities in office buildings and secondary data in agency documents form. Results: Work safety facilities include fire extinguishers, hydrants, evacuation routes, evacuation plans, gathering points, first aid kits. emergency stairs, safety sign. Occupational health facilities include health promotion media, workforce health checks, and lactation rooms. Office work environment health facilities include toilets and hand washing facilities. Then office ergonomics facilities include cushions for employee work chairs. Conclusion: The facilities are in accordance with Republic of Indonesia Health Minister Regulation Number 48 of 2016 concerning Office OHS Standards which include occupational safety application, occupational health, and office environmental health standards and office ergonomics. The implementation of OHS standards for office buildings at in Universitas Airlangga Rectorate, such as occupational safety, occupational health, office work environment health, and office ergonomics standards have been implemented and carried out.

KEBIJAKAN PENYEDIAAN RUANG LAKTASI DI FASILITAS PUBLIK: STUDI KASUS PLAZA MEDAN FAIR KOTA MEDAN

The coverage of ASI in Indonesia in 2016 was 54%, while the national target was 80%. The achievement of the ASI program in Medan in 2017, amounted to 35.1%. The implementation of the policy on lactation rooms in public places is necessary for the success of the exclusive breastfeeding program and to increase the coverage of exclusive breastfeeding in the Medan. This study, therefore, aims to find out how to implement the policy of providing lactation rooms at the Medan Fair Plaza, Medan. This was a qualitative study with a descriptive approach and used a case study design. There were 6 participants who were obtained by purposive sampling, the data was collected by in-depth structured interview method. The study found that communication between implementers and targets. Implementation of policies in implementing the Lactation Room policy in Plaza Medan Fair is limited. Availability of resources in implementing the lactation room policy is not appropriate, such as the lack of facilities and infrastructure needed in the lactation room based on requirements regulated health, the economic environment in the policy of lactation rooms in public places is still less supportive and not optimal.
