Steam Distillation of Rosemary, Russian Tarragon, and Sage with Urea Solution Laboratory Notes

Laboratory Notes, Laboratory Experiences, and Conceptual Analysis: Understanding the Making of Ohm's First Law in Electricity.

Georg Simon Ohm's work in the field of electricity led to what is now considered to be the most fundamental law of electrical circuits, Ohm's Law. Much less known is that only months earlier, Ohm had published another law-one that differed significantly from the now accepted one. The latter entailed a logarithmic relation between the length of the conductor and a parameter that Ohm called "loss of force." This paper discusses how Ohm came up with an initial law that he felt compelled to correct a few months later. We analyze Ohm's publication as well as his laboratory notes, relating them to our own laboratory experiences while using the replication method to study his work. We also discuss the conceptual background of Ohm's work. We conclude that he was significantly influenced by French studies in the field of electricity, most notably the ones by Charles Augustin Coulomb.

Engineering & Laboratory Notes Hysterisis in DC Bias Drift of LiNbO_3 Optical Modulators

The dc drift of LiNbO(3) (LN) optical intensity modulators is experimentally investigated from the viewpoint of the repeatability of the phenomenon. The drift has been assumed to be reversible and be independent of the magnitude of the applied dc bias. However, a bias voltage dependency of the dc drift is experimentally manifested here, especially under a high bias voltage. By an iterative dc bias application for the same LN modulator, the drift rate is increased, and a hysterisis appears in the drift/recovery cycles.

The greater part is taken from the roneo'd Laboratory Notes on Reliability (1938) and Analysis of Variance (1943) referred to by Mr. Mahmoud in the paper that follows. These notes in turn were amplifications of the Memoranda drawn up for the Examination Enquiry Committee in 1931: (see Marks of Examiners, 1936, and The Marking of English Essays, 1941). From the correspondence that followed Mr. Mahmoud's note on the ‘assessment of reliability by analysing variance’ (this Journal, VII, 1954, p. 61) it appeared that many readers would welcome a more accessible account of the methods described in these publications; and the Editor therefore hopes that this paper may serve to explain their theoretical basis and that Mr. Mahmoud's may sufficiently illustrate their practical application.
