A new SMAP soil moisture and vegetation optical depth product (SMAP-IB): Algorithm, assessment and inter-comparison

Passive microwave remote sensing at L-band (1.4 GHz) provides an unprecedented opportunity to estimate global surface soil moisture (SM) and vegetation water content (via the vegetation optical depth, VOD), which are essential to monitor the Earth water and carbon cycles. Currently, only two space-borne L-band radiometer missions are operating: the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) and the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) missions in orbit since 2009 and 2015, respectively. This study presents a new mono-angle retrieval algorithm (called SMAP-INRAE-BORDEAUX, hereafter SMAP-IB) of SM and L-band VOD (L-VOD) from the dual-channel SMAP radiometric observations. The retrievals are based on the L-MEB (L-band Microwave Emission of the Biosphere) model which is the forward model of SMOS-IC and of the official SMOS retrieval algorithms. The SMAP-IB product aims at providing good performances for both SM and L-VOD while remaining independent of auxiliary data: neither modelled SM data nor optical vegetation indices are used as input in the algorithm. Inter-comparison with other SM and L-VOD products (i.e., MT-DCA, SMOS-IC, and the new versions of DCA and SCA-V extracted from SMAP passive Level 3 product) suggested that SMAP-IB performed well for both SM and L-VOD. In particular, SMAP-IB SM retrievals presented the higher scores (R = 0.74) in capturing the temporal trends of in-situ observations from ISMN (International Soil Moisture Network) during April 2015–March 2019, followed by MT-DCA (R = 0.71). While the lowest ubRMSD value was obtained by the new version of SMAP DCA (0.056 m3/m3), SMAP-IB SM retrievals presented best scores for R, ubRMSD (~ 0.058 m3/m3) and bias (0.002 m3/m3) when considering only products independent of optical vegetation indices (e.g., NDVI). L-VOD retrievals from SMAP-IB, MT-DCA, and SMOS-IC were well correlated (spatially) with aboveground biomass and tree height, with spatial R values of ~0.88 and ~ 0.90, respectively. All three L-VOD products exhibited a smooth non-linear density distribution with biomass and a good linear relationship with tree height, especially at high biomass levels, while the L-VOD datasets incorporating optical information in the algorithms (i.e., SCA-V and DCA) showed obvious saturation effects. It is expected that this new algorithm can facilitate the fusion of both SM and L-VOD retrievals from SMOS and SMAP to obtain long-term and continuous L-band earth observation products.

Soil moisture retrieval over a site of intensive agricultural production using airborne radiometer data

This study investigates soil moisture retrievals using airborne passive microwave data at two different resolutions collected during the Soil Moisture Active Passive Validation Experiments in 2012 and 2016 (SMAPVEX12 and SMAPVEX16-MB). Based on the fine-resolution passive data (500 m), we integrate the surface roughness parameters which are traditionally used in the radar backscatter models into the passive emission models. To parameterize the effective roughness Hr in L-band Microwave Emission of the Biosphere (L-MEB) model, we analyze two different functions which include only surface Root Mean Square height (s), as well as both s and the autocorrelation length l (zs = s2/l). For each of the two roughness functions, the b vegetation parameters are optimized for canola, soybean and wheat. The transferability of the b parameters between 2012 and 2016 is also evaluated by comparing the L-MEB model simulated and the measured brightness temperature. Then, the calibrated L-MEB model is applied to the subpixels of the coarse-resolution passive data (1500 m) given the vegetation heterogeneity, to map the soil moisture over the SMAPVEX entire experimental site. The results indicated the Hr model with the zs parameter outperformed that with the s parameter. This suggests that the inclusion of the roughness autocorrelation length in the L-MEB model improved the accuracy of modeling the brightness temperature. The vegetation attenuation on the brightness temperature at V-polarization was stronger than that at H-polarization, due to the dominant vertical structure of the crop canopy. Since the airborne passive observations exhibited remarkable consistency between the 2012 and 2016 measurements, the b parameters obtained in 2012 can be transferred to the 2016. Based on the obtained Hr and b parameters, the soil moisture maps were retrieved using the calibrated L-MEB model applied to the sub-pixel of the coarse-resolution passive data, implying a Root Mean Square Errors (RMSEs) of 0.049–0.058 m3/m3 and correlation coefficients of 0.82–0.87. This paper suggests that the physical roughness zs in the radar domain can be coupled into the L-MEB model to refine the soil moisture retrievals from passive brightness temperature.

Improved Characterization of Forest Transmissivity Within the L-MEB Model Using Multisensor SAR Data

This letter proposes a novel way to assimilate synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data to L-band Microwave Emission of the Biosphere (L-MEB) model to enhance model performance over forested areas. L- and C-band satellite SAR data are used in order to characterize the forest transmissivity within the emission model, instead of the optical satellite imagery-based leaf area index (LAI) parameter. Examination of several combinations of satellite SAR data as a substitute for LAI within the L-MEB model showed that when ALOS PALSAR (L-band) and multitemporal composite Sentinel-1 (C-band) data are applied, an improved agreement was achieved between the measured and simulated brightness temperatures (TBs) over forests. The root mean squared difference between modeled and measured TBs was reduced from 6.1 to 4.7 K with single PALSAR scene-based transmissivity correction and down to 4.1 K with multitemporal Sentinel-1 composite-based transmissivity correction. Suitability of single Sentinel-1 scenes varied based on seasonal and weather conditions. Overall, this indicates the potential of an SAR-based estimation of forest volume transmissivity and opens a possible way of fruitful active-passive microwave satellite data integration.

Measurements of Boreal Coniferous Forest Soil and Humus With an Airborne Radiometer

Boreal coniferous forests are a large and diverse biome, which has not been widely studied in scope of space borne soil moisture (SM) observations. This paper presents a series of airborne measurements that were made to explore microwave emissivity of a boreal coniferous forest in different moisture conditions. Ground observations of SM and vegetation were made in conjunction with the airborne measurements. The L-band microwave emission of the biosphere (L-MEB) model, which is used in the SM and ocean salinity (SMOS) SM algorithm, was used to model the emission of the forest scenes. The litter layer was included in the modeling because of the thick humus layer present in the study area. The measurements indicate that with sufficient parameters the L-MEB model can simulate the forest and soil-humus ensemble emission with reasonable accuracy ( ${\text{R}} = 0.75$ , ${\text{RMSE}} = 4.4{\text{ K}}$ ). While SM retrieval is hampered by the complex behavior of humus layer, a correct parameterization of the layer is likely to improve accuracy of moisture retrieval for mixed pixels in SMOS observations.

Global Sensitivity Analysis of the L-MEB Model for Retrieving Soil Moisture

A global sensitivity analysis utilizing the extended Fourier amplitude sensitivity test is used to determine the parameter sensitivity of the L-band microwave emission of the biosphere (L-MEB) model. The results are analyzed from two perspectives of calibration and inversion. First, the parameters of surface soil moisture, soil roughness factor, vegetation optical depth at nadir, and effective land surface temperature are the four most sensitive parameters in the L-MEB model, demonstrating their possibility to be retrieved in the multiparameter retrieval approaches. Then, the high total sensitivity index (TSI) values of surface soil temperature in the analyses emphasize the importance of high-precision land surface temperature data in the surface soil moisture retrievals, especially for rougher or more vegetated surface conditions. Finally, our analysis indicates that TSI values are high for the soil surface roughness and vegetation optical depth model parameters but low for the vegetation structure, single scattering albedo, and soil roughness coefficient model parameters at incidence angles near nadir. This suggests that calibration experiments performed at small incidence angles may be appropriate for some but not all of the model parameters, which characterize the effect of soil surface roughness and vegetation on the terrestrial brightness temperature. Consequently, new calibration procedures that account for the different relative sensitivities of these model parameters at larger incidence angles may need to be developed in the future.

Disaggregation of SMOS soil moisture over the Canadian Prairies

In this study, we used the Disaggregation based on Physical And Theoretical scale Change (DISPATCH) algorithm under very wet soil conditions in Western Canada for the disaggregation of coarse resolution 40-km soil moisture derived from the Soil Moisture Ocean Salinity (SMOS) satellite. The algorithm relies on the Soil Evaporative Efficiency (SEE), which was estimated using the 1-km resolution data from the MODerate resolution Imaging Spectoradiometer (MODIS). The study aimed to: (i) evaluate DISPATCH under wet soil conditions, (ii) test the linearity/non-linearity of the relationship between soil moisture and SEE, and (iii) propose a more robust procedure to calibrate the SEE model under very wet soil conditions. The disaggregated soil moisture values were compared to 0–5 cm in situ measurements and the soil moisture derived from the L-MEB (L-band Microwave Emission of the Biosphere) model from airborne brightness temperature at 1.4 GHz collected during the Canadian Experiment for Soil Moisture in 2010 (CanEx-SM10) field campaign. The results show a correlation between 0.7 and 0.8 and bias values ~ 0 m 3 /m 3 . The DISPATCH algorithm shows better disaggregation results under very wet soil conditions when a non-linear relationship is considered between SEE and soil moisture instead of a linear model. This is mainly due to the small variability of surface temperature inside the area covered by the SMOS pixel under very wet soil conditions, and the difficulty in accurately estimating the maximum soil temperature ( Ts max ), which is a driving factor for SEE. A sensitivity analysis was conducted and it shows that the linear model performs well only if Ts max can be determined more accurately. The possibility to determine Ts max using high resolution MODIS data over a larger area than the SMOS pixel is examined and discussed in the paper. • We validate DISPATCH downscaling algorithm under very wet soil condition. • Data from CanEX-SM10 field campaign were used. • Linear and non-linear models linking SM to SEE are compared. • Better results are found DISPATCH coupled to the non-linear model. • With an improved Ts max value, DISPATCH results are better with the linear model.

Calibration of the L-MEB Model for Croplands in HiWATER Using PLMR Observation

The Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission was initiated in 2009 with the goal of acquiring global soil moisture data over land using multi-angular L-band radiometric measurements. Specifically, surface soil moisture was estimated using the L-band Microwave Emission of the Biosphere (L-MEB) radiative transfer model. This study evaluated the applicability of this model to the Heihe River Basin in Northern China for specific underlying surfaces by simulating brightness temperature (BT) with the L-MEB model. To analyze the influence of a ground sampling strategy on the simulations, two resampling methods based on ground observations were compared. In the first method, the simulated BT of each point observation was initially acquired. The simulations were then resampled at a 1 km resolution. The other method was based on gridded data with a resolution of 1 km averaged from point observations, such as soil moisture, soil temperature, and soil texture. The simulated BTs at a 1 km resolution were then obtained using the L-MEB model. Because of the large variability in soil moisture, the resampling method based on gridded data was used in the simulation. The simulated BTs based on the calibrated parameters were validated using airborne L-band data from the Polarimetric L-band Multibeam Radiometer (PLMR) acquired during the HiWATER project. The root mean square errors (RMSEs) between the simulated results and the PLMR data were 6 to 7 K for V-polarization and 3 to 5 K for H-polarization at different angles. These results demonstrate that the model effectively represents agricultural land surfaces, and this study will serve as a reference for applying the L-MEB model in arid regions and for selecting a ground sampling strategy.

Comparison of Dobson and Mironov Dielectric Models in the SMOS Soil Moisture Retrieval Algorithm

The Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission provides global surface soil moisture over the continental land surfaces. The retrieval algorithm is based on the comparison between the observations of the L-band (1.4 GHz) brightness temperatures (TB) and the simulated TB data using the L-band Microwave Emission of the Biosphere (L-MEB) model. The L-MEB model includes a dielectric model for the computation of the soil dielectric constant. Since the beginning of the mission, the Dobson model has been used in the operational SMOS algorithm. Recently, a new model of the soil dielectric constant has been developed by Mironov et al. and is now considered. This paper is the first evaluation of these two models based on the actual SMOS observations. First, both Dobson and Mironov models were modified to ensure that the SMOS retrieval algorithm converges to realistic soil moisture retrievals (symmetrization for negative soil moisture values was applied). Second, soil moisture was retrieved over several sites using both Dobson and Mironov models to compute the soil dielectric constant and were compared with in situ measurements. At a global scale, the use of the Mironov model leads to higher retrieved soil moisture than when using the Dobson model (0.033 m3/m3 on average). However, the comparisons of the two model output with in situ measurements over various test sites do not demonstrate a superior performance of one model over the other.

Validation of SMOS L1C and L2 Products and Important Parameters of the Retrieval Algorithm in the Skjern River Catchment, Western Denmark

The Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) satellite with a passive L-band radiometer monitors surface soil moisture. In addition to soil moisture, vegetation optical thickness $\tau_{\rm NAD}$ is retrieved (L2 product) from brightness temperatures ( $T_{B}$ , L1C product) using an algorithm based on the L-band Microwave Emission of the Biosphere (L-MEB) model with initial guesses on the two parameters (derived from ECMWF products and ECOCLIMAP Leaf Area Index, respectively) and other auxiliary input. This paper presents the validation work carried out in the Skjern River Catchment, Denmark. L1C/L2 data and the most sensitive algorithm parameters were analyzed by network and airborne campaign data collected within one SMOS pixel (44 km diameter). The SMOS retrieval is based on the prevailing low vegetation class. For the L1C comparison, $T_{B}$ 's were calculated from in situ soil moisture using L-MEB. Consistent with worldwide findings, the initial/retrieved SMOS soil moisture captures the in situ dynamics well but with significant wet/dry biases and too large amplitudes in case of the latter. While the initial $\tau_{\rm NAD}$ is in range with an in situ estimate for low agricultural vegetation, the retrieved $\tau_{\rm NAD}$ is too high with too pronounced temporal variability. A filter based on L2 criteria removed radio frequency interference (RFI) and improved the $R^{2}$ between retrieved and network soil moisture from 0.49 to 0.61, while the bias remained $(-0.092/-\!0.087 \hbox{m}^{3}/\hbox{m}^{3})$ . Likely error sources include the following: 1) still present RFI; 2) potential link between high retrieved $\tau_{\rm NAD}$ and other L-MEB parameters, e.g., low roughness parameter $(H_{R})$ ; 3) $\sim$ 18% lower sand and $\sim$ 8% higher clay fractions while $\sim\!\!0.35 \hbox{g/cm}^{3}$ lower bulk density in SMOS algorithm than in situ; and 4) caveats in the Dobson dielectric mixing model implemented in the L-MEB model. A previous study at the Danish validation site had revealed superior performance of the Mironov dielectric mixing model at the 2 $\times$ 2 km scale. Studies are ongoing to address the aforementioned issues, and the role of organic surface layers will be investigated.

Soil Moisture Estimations Based on Airborne CAROLS L-Band Microwave Data

The SMOS satellite mission, launched in 2009, allows global soil moisture estimations to be made using the L-band Microwave Emission of the Biosphere (L-MEB) model, which simulates the L-band microwave emissions produced by the soil–vegetation layer. This model was calibrated using various sources of in situ and airborne data. In the present study, we propose to evaluate the L-MEB model on the basis of a large set of airborne data, recorded by the CAROLS radiometer during the course of 20 flights made over South West France (the SMOSMANIA site), and supported by simultaneous soil moisture measurements, made in 2009 and 2010. In terms of volumetric soil moisture, the retrieval accuracy achieved with the L-MEB model, with two default roughness parameters, ranges between 8% and 13%. Local calibrations of the roughness parameter, using data from the 2009 flights for different areas of the site, allowed an accuracy of approximately 5.3% to be achieved with the 2010 CAROLS data. Simultaneously we estimated the vegetation optical thickness (t) and we showed that, when roughness is locally adjusted, MODIS NDVI values are correlated (R2 = 0.36) to t. Finally, as a consequence of the significant influence of the roughness parameter on the estimated absolute values of soil moisture, we propose to evaluate the relative variability of the soil moisture, using a default soil roughness parameter. The soil moisture variations are estimated with an uncertainty of approximately 6%.

Evaluation of the SMOS L-MEB passive microwave soil moisture retrieval algorithm

Soil moisture will be mapped globally by the European Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission to be launched in 2009. The expected soil moisture accuracy will be 4.0 %v/v. The core component of the SMOS soil moisture retrieval algorithm is the L-band Microwave Emission of the Biosphere (L-MEB) model which simulates the microwave emission at L-band from the soil–vegetation layer. The model parameters have been calibrated with data acquired by tower mounted radiometer studies in Europe and the United States, with a typical footprint size of approximately 10 m. In this study, aircraft L-band data acquired during the National Airborne Field Experiment (NAFE) intensive campaign held in South-eastern Australia in 2005 are used to perform the first evaluation of the L-MEB model and its proposed parameterization when applied to coarser footprints (62.5 m). The model could be evaluated across large areas including a wide range of land surface conditions, typical of the Australian environment. Soil moisture was retrieved from the aircraft brightness temperatures using L-MEB and ground measured ancillary data (soil temperature, soil texture, vegetation water content and surface roughness) and subsequently evaluated against ground measurements of soil moisture. The retrieval accuracy when using the L-MEB ‘default’ set of model parameters was found to be better than 4.0 %v/v only over grassland covered sites. Over crops the model was found to underestimate soil moisture by up to 32 %v/v. After site specific calibration of the vegetation and roughness parameters, the retrieval accuracy was found to be equal or better than 4.8 %v/v for crops and grasslands at 62.5-m resolution. It is suggested that the proposed value of roughness parameter H R for crops is too low, and that variability of H R with soil moisture must be taken into consideration to obtain accurate retrievals at these scales. The analysis presented here is a crucial step towards validating the application of L-MEB for soil moisture retrieval from satellite observations in an operational context.

Calibration of the L-MEB Model Over a Coniferous and a Deciduous Forest

In this paper, the L-band Microwave Emission of the Biosphere (L-MEB) model used in the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) Level 2 Soil Moisture algorithm is calibrated using L-band (1.4 GHz) microwave measurements over a coniferous (pine) and a deciduous (mixed/beech) forest. This resulted in working values of the main canopy parameters optical depth (tau), single scattering albedo (omega), and structural parameters tt(H) and tt(V), besides the soil roughness parameters H R and N R. Using these calibrated values in the forward model resulted in a root mean-square error in brightness temperatures from 2.8 to 3.8 K, depending on data set and polarization. Furthermore, the relationship between canopy optical depth and leaf area index is investigated for the deciduous site. Finally, a sensitivity study is conducted for the focus parameters, temperature, soil moisture, and precipitation. The results found in this paper will be integrated in the operational SMOS Level 2 Soil Moisture algorithm and used in future inversions of the L-MEB model, for soil moisture retrievals over heterogeneous, partly forested areas.

L-band Microwave Emission of the Biosphere (L-MEB) Model: Description and calibration against experimental data sets over crop fields

In the near future, the SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity) mission will provide global maps of surface soil moisture (SM). The SMOS baseline payload is an L-band (1.4 GHz) two dimensional interferometric microwave radiometer which will provide multi-angular and dual-polarization observations. In the framework of the ground segment activities for the SMOS mission an operational SMOS Level 2 Soil Moisture algorithm was developed. The principle of the algorithm is to exploit multi-angular data in order to retrieve simultaneously several surface parameters including soil moisture and vegetation characteristics. The algorithm uses an iterative approach, minimizing a cost function computed from the differences between measured and modelled brightness temperature ( T B) data, for all available incidence angles. In the algorithm, the selected forward model is the so-called L-MEB (L-band Microwave Emission of the Biosphere) model which was the result of an extensive review of the current knowledge of the microwave emission of various land covers. This model is a key element in the SMOS L2 algorithm and could be used in future assimilation studies. There is thus a strong need for a reference study, describing the model and its implementation. In order to address these needs a detailed description of soil and vegetation modelling in L-MEB is given in this study. In a second step, the use of L-MEB in soil moisture retrievals is evaluated for several experimental data sets over agricultural crops. Calibrations of the soil and vegetation L-MEB parameters are investigated for corn, soybean and wheat. Over the different experiments, very consistent results are obtained for each vegetation type in terms of calibration and soil moisture retrievals.

Two-year global simulation of L-band brightness temperatures over land

This letter presents a synthetic L-band (1.4 GHz) multiangular brightness temperature dataset over land surfaces that was simulated at a half-degree resolution and at the global scale. The microwave emission of various land-covers (herbaceous and woody vegetation, frozen and unfrozen bare soil, snow, etc.) was computed using a simple model [L-band Microwave Emission of the Biosphere (L-MEB)] based on radiative transfer equations. The soil and vegetation characteristics needed to initialize the L-MEB model were derived from existing land-cover maps. Continuous simulations from a land-surface scheme for 1987 and 1988 provided time series of the main variables driving the L-MEB model: soil temperature at the surface and at depth, surface soil moisture, proportion of frozen surface soil moisture, and snow cover characteristics. The obtained global maps constitute a useful dataset for a first evaluation of the sensitivity of future satellite-based L-band radiometry data to soil moisture.
