Correlation analysis between regional economic differences and environmental pollution based on Kuznets curve model

Abstract With the interaction and development of economy and environment, generally speaking, environmental Kuznets Curve mainly refers to the deterioration of environmental quality of a country or corresponding region with economic growth. When the economic development reaches a certain level, the environmental quality will be further improved. However, due to the modern economy and the policy factors of corresponding countries and regions, the correlation between the internal differences of regional economy and environmental pollution does not necessarily follow the conventional inverted U-shaped distribution. Based on the Kuznets curve, this paper makes a quantitative linear regression analysis of economic growth and environmental pollution in a certain region, and verifies the particularity of the regional Kuznets curve. At the same time, this paper will fully consider the policy factors, science and technology development factors, industrial scale and structure factors in the actual analysis of the relevant regions. The experimental results also prove that the research results of this paper have high accuracy for analyzing the correlation between the economy and the environment in a specific region, and the accuracy rate is about 5% higher than that corresponding to the traditional Kuznets curve. Finally, according to the actual situation of the region, this paper puts forward some suggestions and specific measures.

Estimation of waste outflows for multiple product types in China from 2010\u20132050

Material flow has been accelerated from underground natural minerals and is accumulating as aboveground waste stock. China is not only the largest producer and consumer of material-driven products, but also the largest generator of product waste. No official annual product waste data are released for China, which creates challenges especially in light of China’s emerging waste management policies. Previous studies have presented only estimations of waste streams for single products. In this study, we considered three product types and 33 technological products and collected all the available data. A Kuznets curve and Bass diffusion model were employed to forecast their future consumption. Based on urban consumption metabolism, we created one systematic estimation model of product waste generation related to material flow and social regulation. Typical technological product waste outflows were estimated from 2010 to 2050, which can assist further material flow and environmental impact research, as well as waste management policy-making and technology development. The created model can be potentially extended to other types of product waste estimation.

EKC test study on the relationship between carbon dioxide emission and regional economic growth

With the rapid development of regional economy, energy consumption and carbon dioxide emission increase sharply. This study examines the relationship between carbon dioxide emissions and regional economic growth. Based on the mean value decomposition method of double logarithm, the model was built to identify the key indexes affecting the decomposition, and the carbon emission formula was calculated to obtain the regional carbon dioxide emission. Based on the actual data, the kuznets curve model is established to represent the relationship between CO2 emission and regional economic growth in logarithm form. The unit root test, co-integration test and granger causality test are carried out for the correlation sequences in the kuznets curve model in order to realize the research on the relationship between CO2 emission and regional economic growth. This paper discusses the relationship between carbon dioxide emission and regional economic growth through an example. It shows that the relationship between carbon dioxide emission and regional economic growth is inversely u-shaped, and there is a kuznets curve between the two. According to the result of empirical analysis, the paper puts forward some suggestions to reduce energy consumption and improve energy efficiency, which is helpful to improve social and economic structure and promote social and economic development.

Tracking the Spatial–Temporal Evolution of Carbon Emissions in China from 1999 to 2015: A Land Use Perspective

China has been a leader in global carbon emissions since 2006. The question of how to reduce emissions while maintaining stable economic growth is a serious challenge for the country. To achieve this, it is of great significance to track the spatial and temporal evolution of carbon emissions in China during recent decades, which can provide evidence-based scientific guidance for developing mitigation policies. In this study, we calculated the carbon emissions of land use in 1999–2015 using the carbon emissions factor method proposed by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The Kuznets curve model was used to explore the influence of economic growth and urbanization on carbon emissions at the national and provincial levels. The results indicated that (1) China’s emissions increased from 927.88 million tons (Mt) in 1999 to 2833.91 Mt in 2015 at an average annual growth rate of 12.94%, while carbon sinks grew slightly, from 187.58 Mt to 207.19 Mt. Both emissions and sinks presented significant regional differences, with the Central and Southwest regions acting as the biggest emissions and sink contributors, respectively. (2) Built-up land was the largest land carrier for carbon emissions in China, contributing over 85% to total emissions each year; and (3) at the national level, the relationships between economic growth, urbanization, and carbon emissions presented as inverted U-shaped Kuznets curves, which were also found in the majority of the 30 studied provinces. While carbon emissions may be reaching a peak in China, given the disproportionate role of built-up land in carbon emissions, efforts should be devoted to limiting urbanization and the production of associated carbon emissions.

Urbanization impact on carbon emissions in the Pearl River Delta region: Kuznets curve relationships

Abstract Research on the impact of urbanization on carbon emissions has great significance to the development of low-carbon cities. Although various studies have found a causal relationship between urbanization and carbon emissions, the mechanisms by which land urbanization (especially the spatial agglomeration changes of construction land), population urbanization, and economic urbanization affect carbon emissions are still unclear. This paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the impact of urbanization on carbon emissions in the Pearl River Delta region from 1990 to 2014. The data were analyzed on the basis of a spatial agglomeration function, grey correlation model, Kuznets curve model, etc., according to three aspects of urbanization, namely, land urbanization, population urbanization, and economic urbanization. The associated Kuznets curve relationships between these three aspects of urbanization and carbon emissions were assessed to explore the mechanisms of influence. The main results were as follows. (1) From 1990 to 2014, carbon emissions increased significantly in the Pearl River Delta region from 18.6 × 106 t to 151.31 × 106 t, of which carbon emissions increased much faster from 2000 to 2013. Guangzhou and Shenzhen were the cities with the largest carbon emissions in the Pearl River Delta region. (2) The influence of urbanization on carbon emissions in the Pearl River Delta region showed that economic urbanization had the most obvious impact on carbon emissions followed by land urbanization. Population urbanization had a minimal impact on carbon emissions. The land urbanization and economic urbanization displayed a Kuznets curve relationship with carbon emissions, and the respective models were as follows: y = 145.78x − 839.87x2 − 2.84, y = 0.51x − 0.005x2 + 1.56. (3) The composition structure of carbon emissions showed that priority should be given to emissions from energy consumption and industrial production. Frequent changes of land use were also an important reason for the increase in carbon emissions. The Pearl River Delta region should aim for the construction of low-carbon cities as a goal and attach importance to the harmonious development of the economy and environment in its policies.

Environmental Kuznets Curve, Flood Disaster of China and Stormwater Resource Reuse

We analyzed the relationship between the national flood disaster area, drought disaster area , total disaster area and per capita GDP from 1970-2011 in this study, which use the theory of Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) and regression analysis model. The study showed that drought disaster area and per capita GDP showed a typical "U" shaped of Kuznets curve, flood disaster area and per capita GDP showed "inverted U + U" typed of Kuznets curve. From China's current economic situation, flood is an important factor to affect Chinas economic development, especially the regional economic development. Thinking about how to implement stromwater resource reuse from a strategic perspective is an important issue of land resource utilization and regional economic development. So we propose a strategic concept based on the empirical analysis.

The relationship between income and NSP in zhejiang province: Is there an environmental Kuznets curve?

Abstract In this study, using methods of emission coefficient, we measured the total pollutant emissions of livestock manure and rural life, which are important non-point source pollution source in agriculture, in zhejiang province from 1990 to 2009. We investigated the relationship between rural net income and rural environmental quality of zhejiang province with the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) model. The results shows that there is no significant relationship between rural pollution and per capita net income of rural residents in zhejiang province, which means it doesn’t well agree with EKC curve. Other factors may have a great influence on relationship of them.
