43rd International Deep Drawing Research Group (IDDRG) Conference Sustainable Sheet Forming - Circular Economy Melbourne, Australia 1. Introduction The 43rd International Deep Drawing Research Group (IDDRG) conference was held in Melbourne, Australia, on 12–15 March. The conference was co-organised by Deakin University and the Korean Society for Technology of Plasticity. The conference chairs were: Prof. Bernard Rolfe (Deakin University), A/Prof. Matthias Weiss (Deakin University), and Prof Jeong Whan Yoon (KAIST/Deakin University).During IDDRG 2024, all engineering aspects of sheet metal forming were discussed, such as behaviour of workpiece materials, formability, tools, tribology, process robustness, simulation methods and experiments. The general theme of IDDRG 2024 was Sustainable Sheet Forming – Circular Economy. International Deep Drawing Research Group The International Deep Drawing Research Group (IDDRG) was started in the late 1950s as an organization of national groups devoted to the study of sheet metal forming including forming processes, materials, formability issues, tooling, tribology and many other interesting aspects of sheet metal forming research and industrial practices.At the IDDRG, the leading sheet metal specialists and researchers from all over the world gather for fruitful discussions on challenging technical topics in forming technology. The conference is designed to provide an open and inspiring environment for knowledge development, discussions and interactions. Conference topics The theme of the IDDRG 2024 conference was Sustainable Sheet Forming – Circular Economy. In addition to the main theme of the conference, topical sessions with the focus on the challenges and current trends in the field of sheet metal forming, such as: fossil-free steel, sustainable/advanced/smart materials, multi-material concepts/solutions, forming/formability, lightweight structures, digital transformation, digitalization, smart plants, smart press shops, cold and hot forming and trimming (incl. single and multi-step forming and trimming), tribology, simulations (incl. material models, topology optimization, tribology, springback compensation, and geometry assurance), testing, testbeds, springback, shape accuracy, geometry assurance, surface quality, tools and dies, and additive manufacturing.There were six additional mini-symposiums organised by internationally renowned experts held at IDDRG 2024:• 1. Material, Process Monitoring and Quality Control in Roll Forming Processes, organized by Matthias Weiss (Deakin University, Australia);• 2. Forming, Joining and Failure of Fuel Cell and Battery Materials, organized by Michael Pereira (Deakin University, Australia), and Jeong Yoon (KAIST/Deakin University, Korea/Australia);• 3. Machine Learning Driven Forming, organized by Hyunsung Choi (Korea Institute of Materials Science, Korea);• 4. Flexible Metal Forming, organized by Namsu Park (Korea Institute of Industrial Technology, Korea);• 5. Innovative Metal Forming Technology, organized by Professor Richard Yang (Western Sydney University, Australia);• 6. High-Sensitivity Hydrogen Sulfide Electrochemical Gas Sensor Based on CNT/Pt Cluster Electrode

Recently, due to the development of industrial technology, harmful gases discharged from industrial sites are gradually increasing, and as a result, inconvenience and civil complaints due to odor in the community are rapidly increasing. Among several types of harmful gases, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a colorless representative harmful gas that can cause pain through irritation of the mucous membranes of the eyes and respiratory tract, and can cause central nerve paralysis and suffocation at the same time when exposed to high concentrations. In addition, H2S is not only harmful to the human body, but also can create an unpleasant feeling by causing an odor even in a very small amount. Therefore, in order to manage H2S, research on a gas sensor capable of quickly and stably detecting H2S has been actively conducted. Most of the sensors that have been studied in the past are metal oxide-based semiconductor H2S gas sensors, which have high sensitivity, but have disadvantages in that low selectivity and high-temperature operating conditions are required. On the other hand, the electrochemical gas sensor can measure H2S gas with high selectivity because a chemical reaction occurs with respect to a specific gas depending on the type of electrolyte and electrode, and a potential difference due to electrons generated thereby is measured. Therefore, in this study, a CNT/Pt-based electrochemical H2S gas sensor capable of detecting at room temperature with high selectivity for H2S was developed. After forming a CNT thin film on a PTFE membrane, Pt was deposited through an E-beam to fabricate a working electrode capable of selectively detecting only H2S, and applied to an electrochemical H2S gas sensor using sulfuric acid (H2SO4) electrolyte. H2S was measured at a concentration of 100 to 10 ppm in units of 10 ppm using the manufactured CNT/Pt-based electrochemical H2S gas sensor. As a result, the amount of current change was confirmed to be 100uA at a concentration of 100 ppm, and the response time and recovery time were confirmed to be about 10 seconds.This work was supported by the Korea Innovation Foundation(INNOPOLIS) grant funded by the Korea government(MSIT) (2020-DD-UP-0348). Characterization of a Waveguide with 45 Degrees Reflectors for the Detection of Carbon Dioxide

This paper investigates the characteristics of the angle of incidence of a waveguide with 45 degrees reflectors. Non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) gas sensors consist of an infrared source, a waveguide, and an infrared detector. The waveguide especially plays a part in an infrared path and gas cell. According to the Beer-Lambert law, the NDIR sensor with longer ray traveling path shows a higher response to the target gas. Also of particular interest is that the normal incidence ratio toward an infrared detector enhances the NDIR sensor selectivity for the target gases as well as the sensitivity. While there has been significant research on the effect on sensitivity by designing waveguide structures or ray traveling distance, this paper focuses on understanding the incidence of light toward the infrared detector by the waveguide with 45 degrees reflector and how this affects the selectivity of the sensor. A Ray tracing simulation is adopted to analyze the effect of the number of 45 degrees reflectors on the distribution of the incidence. Furthermore, a non-dispersive infrared gas sensor is applied to measure how the number of the reflectors affect to the selectivity for the target gas. The State of Affairs of ‘Rare Metal Industry’ in Korea

This paper provides an in-depth exploration of the rare metal industry in Korea, examining its definition, classification, supply and demand dynamics, international trade conflicts, and the government's strategic initiatives. The research underscores the global significance of rare metals, the challenges posed by their uneven distribution, and the imperative for countries, including Korea, to address these challenges strategically. The paper also delves into Korea's recent legal and policy frameworks, emphasizing the role of the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH) in fostering the rare metal industry. Furthermore, it discusses the current state of Korea's rare metal industry, highlighting key areas such as rare earth metals for electric vehicles, refractory metals for semiconductors/displays, and cathode materials for secondary batteries. The concluding section emphasizes the need for technological advancements, recycling, and refining to establish a circular rare metal industrial economy.

Angstrom-Thick Oxide Overcoat on Decorated Nanoclusters for Enhanced Performance and Durability of SOFC Cathodes

A solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) is an energy conversion system with high conversion efficiency, high power density and fuel flexibility.1 Since its durability and cost issues are largely originated from the high temperature operation, intense efforts have been made to reduce the operational temperature to an intermediate range of 600 – 800 °C.2 The decrease in temperature, however, results in a significant decrease in the electrochemical kinetics in particular of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) occurring at the cathode.3,4 Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is an emerging low-temperature chemical vapor deposition variant that can deposit well-dispersed islands or uniform films at the atomic scale even on a highly corrugated geometry.8,9 By leveraging the capability, researchers have successfully improved SOFC durability mainly by suppressing the agglomeration of high-surface-area electrodes10–13 and/or dopant segregation to the surface of perovskite-based cathodes.14,15 Considering the capability of ALD to perform a conformal atomic-scale treatment on complex geometry, an ALD treatment can be best leveraged when applied to a structure of extreme surface area as opposed to conventional porous backbone structures. However, its application to a high-surface-area electrodes (e.g. infiltrated electrodes) and associated analysis is rarely reported.In this presentation, we demonstrate that a uniform atomic-scale oxide overcoat (either ceria or yttria with a nominal thickness of 0.7 – 1.5 Å) by ALD is highly effective not only in the enhancement of thermal stability of underlying ceria nanoparticles (5 – 20 nm) infiltrated on LaNi0.6Fe0.4O3- d (LNF) backbone (~100 nm) but also in the facilitation of oxygen reduction kinetics. Since LNF does not suffer from Sr segregation, a major degradation mechanism,17 the analysis of cell performance degradation is simplified. Based upon electrochemical and physical characterization of a series of infiltrated and/or ALD-treated samples, we discuss the impact of surface treatment on the nanoscale morphology, surface chemistry and electrode performance.We provide a quantitative analysis of the thermal agglomeration of NPs with and without ALD treatment and prove the close correlation between the NP agglomeration and electrode performance degradation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work showing the correlation in a quantitative manner. In addition, we demonstrate that an angstrom-scale ALD overcoat dramatically enhances the electrode performance in terms of polarization resistance and its activation energy for both bare LNF and ceria-infiltrated LNF electrodes. The improved electrode activity from ALD treatment is mainly ascribed to a significant facilitation of O2 dissociative adsorption with a partial reduction, with the aid of surface-specific oxygen-deficient and catalytically active ceria.The authors acknowledge the support from the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH) and U.S. National Science Foundation CAREER Award (DMR 1753383). (Invited) Atomic Layer Deposition-Enabled Functionalization of 3D Nanostructures for Oxygen Electrocatalysis

Since the performance of a fuel cell is largely limited by the oxygen reduction kinetics, a rationale design and development of active and durable cathodes is very important. For catalysis per mass, catalysts with a maximized surface area are preferred. This is even more the case for low- and intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) where the even more sluggish cathodic kinetics should be addressed for commercially acceptable performance. However, electrodes with a high surface area is susceptible to thermal agglomeration during operation at elevated temperatures, leaving the long-term durability of the structure as a major concern.In this talk, I will present our recent efforts to address this issue by atomic-/nano-scale surface treatment of both noble metal (Pt)-based electrodes and more SOFC-relevant cathode materials mainly by the use of atomic layer deposition (ALD). An ultrathin overcoat have proved highly effective in suppressing the sintering kinetics of the underlying electrode structure and thus enhancing the overall cell durability by a significant margin. I also present our recent study successfully demonstrating that even an angstrom-thick oxide overcoat improves thermal durability of high-surface-area electrodes by maintaining the morphology of nanoparticle-decorated (wet-impregnated) cathode structures. The benefits of the surface overcoat is not limited to the enhancement of thermal durability. A Fundamental Study on Estimating the Concentration of Carbon Monoxide (CO) By Fabric-Based Colorimetric Analysis Using an Optical RGB Color Sensor

We propose a sensitive colorimetric sensing system for estimating the concentration of Carbon Monoxide (CO) using an optical RGB color sensor. Tasteless and odorless hazardous gas, such as carbon monoxide (CO), can be life-threatening, even at prolonged exposure at low concentrations. Early detection of these gases under low concentration conditions is a difficult problem. Thus, studying environmental health, monitoring of air quality, and the safety of people from harmful gas exposures have motivated increasing efforts to develop low cost and high-performance various sensors[1-2]. A detection method using the visual and optical device is relatively easy to apply because they are widely used and cheaper than in the past. This method can effectively detect harmful substances with reactive dyes. Potassium disulfide dye is suitable as a reactive dye because it has a property of discoloration in response to CO. Therefore, we used this to detect the optical response of the fabric discoloration process and perform quantitative gas concentration estimation. The chemical reaction of CO gas and disulfide potassium dyes is as shown in Formula 1, and the fabric exposed to the reaction turns black. The discoloration information for the fabric was collected from chambers that can control the gas concentration, and the concentration of CO gas considered in the experiment is 0-600 ppm. The time to reach full discoloration was recorded according to each gas concentration condition, and an RGB sensor was used to detect discoloration information. We used Moving-median filtering to remove noise caused by sensor characteristics of the collected data. To estimate the gas concentration, a curve fitting model using a least-squares method was applied. This method of converting to a power law scale and then use poly fitted to fit a linear curve to data. In the process of discoloration, we observed the difference in the discoloration progression rate according to the gas level and time. Also, under each gas concentration condition, the spending times from 20% progression to 80% progression in the whole discoloration process have a significant difference. These characteristics were applied to approach algorithms for estimate concentrations. Results show that the spending time to discolor from 20 % to 80 % progression at 200, 400, and 600 ppm was 275, 163.8 and 151.4 seconds, respectively in Figure 1. In the low concentration section, a significant time difference was observed compared to the high concentration section. The time characteristics of each section were extracted and applied to the concentration estimation algorithm. Except for outliers, the actual measurement data applied to the estimation algorithm, the concentration estimated were about 95%, 77% and 72% accuracy at 200, 400 and 600 ppm. As a result, we could estimate the concentration of CO gas by analyzing some of the discolored sections. This result is since the response time of discoloration varies depending on the gas concentration level. As future work, the gas concentration estimation method in this study could be improved by machine learning and data processing methods. 한국 패키징 산업 현황

This paper describes an overview of the packaging industry in Korea. Packaging plays an important role to connect the dot between primary and secondary industry. Moreover, it performs the visual merchandising of product, resulting in synergetic effect with quality of merchandise. As more convergence of primary and secondary industry accelerates, packaging industry became more competitive as well as critical area. Korea Packaging Center (KOPACK) in Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH) has conducted the national market survey of packaging industry since 2010, biannually. Firstly, Korea packaging industry was categorized. For defining the Korea packaging industry, Korea Standard Industry Code (KSIC) is used to divide the group into wood, paper, plastic, glass, metal and packaging machinery. Based on these categories, the market size was estimated with survey of 2,180 packaging companies. In this study, the results of this survey are summarized, and the key trends of each category are described.

Simple Walking Strategies for Hydraulically Driven Quadruped Robot over Uneven Terrain

Jinpoong is a quadruped walking robot developed by the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology. Jinpoong was developed for use in surveillance, reconnaissance, transportation, and guidance tasks in atypical environments such as those encountered after a disaster. To perform these tasks successfully, the robot must be able to walk stably over uneven terrain. The aim of this study was to develop a method for absorbing the impacts experienced by the robot while walking and a method for resisting external forces applied to the side (sagittal plane) of the robot so that it can walk stably. We demonstrate the efficacy of the methods developed through experiments.

Numerical study on the reburning characteristics of biomass syngas in a 2 MW pilot scale heavy oil furnace

NOx reduction characteristics of syngas fuel were numerically investigated for the 2MW pilot-scale heavy oil furnace of KITECH (Korea Institute of Industrial Technology). The secondary fuel, syngas, was fed into the furnace with two purposes: partial replacement of main fuel and reburning of NOx. Some portion of syngas was fed into the flame zone to replace partially the heavy oil, while the other portion was fed into the furnace downstream to reduce NOx generation. The numerical prediction was verified by comparing it to the experimental results. The syngas of KITECH’s experiment, which assumedly had been produced from biomass, had a very low calorific value and contained 3% hydrocarbon. This study investigated the precise behavior of NOx generation and NOx reduction as well as the thermo-fluidic characteristics inside the furnace, which were unavailable from the experiment. In addition to 3% hydrocarbon syngas, 5% and 7% hydrocarbon syngas were numerically tested as reburning fuels to analyze the effect of hydrocarbon proportion to NOx reduction. The prediction shows that the 3% hydrocarbon syngas is equally effective as 7% hydrocarbon syngas in reducing NOx.

Refractive Indexes of Porous Thin Films Prepared From Organic-templated Polymethylsilsesquioxanes

The rapidly developing microelectronics industry has shown a strong demand for high performance materials to improve device performance [1,2]. Nanoporous silicate thin films are considered as important materials for advanced electronics. The formation of air-filled nanopores is a key technology for preparing insulating materials [3-12]. Polymethylsilsesquioxane (PMSSQ), with the empirical formula of (CH3-SiO1.5)n, is a potential candidate for low dielectric spin-on glass [13]. It has the characteristics of low dielectric constant ranging from 2.7 to 2.9, high thermal stability, low moisture uptake, good adhesion to metal, and excellent mechanical properties [11,14]. In addition, star-shaped macromolecules, such as hyperbranched poly(ecaprolactone) (PCL), are generally used as an organic template to generate nanometer-sized pores in the matrix polymer [11,15]. The organic templates dispersed in the polymer matrix are required to completely decompose at a relatively low temperature range (200°C ~ 400°C), and after the thermal calcination process, the derived nanopores need to be well distributed as a closedcell structure in the polymer matrix. The air-filled nanopores in a thin film can be generated by a method that disperses organic templates into an insulating matrix material, and decomposes them at elevated temperature. The mechanical strength of an insulating material will undoubtedly decrease, and the size and distribution of the as-made pores cannot be uniform, due to the organic templates, which leave pores behind from the thermal decomposition. Moreover, if the pores agglomerate, the insulating material may break down at low voltage. Therefore, the thermal decomposition and dispersibility of the organic templates in matrix polymers, and control of the nanopore generation, should be suitably considered for the structural design of organic templates. A Study on the Micro Property Testing of Micro Embossing Patterned Metallic Thin Foil

In this paper, Experimental results on the measurement of mechanical properties of fine patterns in the MEMS structure are described. The mechanical properties of embossing patterns on metallic thin foil is measured using the nano indentation system, that is developed by Korea Institute of Industrial Technology(KITECH). These micro embossing patterns are fabricated using CIP(Cold Isostatic Press) process on micro metallic thin foils(Al-1100) that are made by rolling process. These embossing patterned metallic thin foils(Al-1100) are used in the reflecting plate of BLU(Back Light Unit) and electrical/mechanical MEMS components. If these mechanical properties of fine patterns are utilized in a design procedure, the optimal design can be achieved in aspects of reliability as well as economy.

Strategies for sustainable development of industrial park in Ulsan, South Korea—From spontaneous evolution to systematic expansion of industrial symbiosis

The Korea National Cleaner Production Center (KNCPC) affiliated to the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH) has started a 15 year, 3-phase EIP master plan with the support of Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Energy (MOCIE). A total of 6 industrial parks, including industrial parks in Ulsan city, known as the industrial capital of South Korea, are planning projects to find the feasibility of shifting existing industrial parks to eco-industrial parks. The basic survey shows that Ulsan industrial complex has been continuously evolving from conventional industrial complexes to eco-industrial parks by spontaneous industrial symbiosis. This paper describes the Korean national policies and the developmental activities of this vision to drive the global trend of innovation for converting the existing industrial parks to eco-industrial parks through inter-industry waste, energy, and material exchange in Ulsan Industrial complexes. In addition, the primary and supportive components of the Ulsan EIP pilot project, which will be implemented for 5 years is elaborated with its schedules and economic benefits.

The purpose of this paper is to examine MFCA (Material Flow Cost Accounting), accounting analysis method, that provides the company which is committed to reduce environmental burden and cost in the process of implementing environmental management with useful decision-making information. In addition, in order to find the way of MFCA's practical use, MFCA was applied to the domestic middle & small company manufacturing car parts. This case study was conducted as a part of the project, "Construction and Application of S IEM Model for the Middle & Small Company in the automobile industry," funded by Korea National Cleaner Production Center of the Korea Institute of Industrial Technology, a subsidiary of Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy.

The present and future application of computer simulation for casting design in Korean foundries

This paper shows applications and trials used to utilize computer-aided simulations for enhancing the productivity and quality of casting products in Korean foundries initially over a few decades. In Korea, KITECH (Korea Institute of Industrial Technology) took the important steps in developing and propagating computer simulation software for casting design. The “Z-CAST” developed by KITECH is the best computer simulation software for casting design in Korea and its schematics and application for the manufacturing field are introduced in this paper. Also, the future work of the casting industry is stated, especially, IES (Intelligent Expert System), the main stream of computer-aided production in Korea, is discussed.

The Korea Advanced Manufacturing System (KAMS) Project

The Korea Advanced Manufacturing System (KAMS) is one of the Highly Advanced National (HAN) Projects planned to achieve significant technological advances in Korea. The aim of this project is to create new processes and technologies for managing and integrating manufacturing systems. The key to sustaining economic growth and surviving global competition is to develop advanced manufacturing systems technology. The Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH) began this project in 1992 with support from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Ministry of Science and Technology. The project is divided into three phases, each phase consisting of project groups which include several research projects. The main project groups are `next-generation machining system' and `assembly and inspection system for electronic products'. The names of research projects are listed, and brief explanations are also introduced in this paper. The KAMS Project is expected to result in many benefits for manufacturing industry. The increase in productivity and system accuracy, and reduction in lead-time, will give renewed vitality to Korean manufacturing industry.
