Improve Awareness of the Forensic Odontology among Medical Graduates: Need of the Hour?

Introduction: Forensic odontology is a fastly growing field in both dental and forensic sciences. It involves the application of principles and expertise of dental sciences for criminal investigations. With increasing demand and use of dental evidence in forensic examinations, proper knowledge and awareness of the subject is more necessary than ever before. Materials and Method: A survey was conducted in Medical and Dental colleges in and around Mangalore, Dakshina Kannada after approval from institutional ethics committee. It included MBBS and BDS students (III year to internship) Result: The analysis of the data showed two fold results. Knowledge of tooth as a source of DNA, evidence for natural disasters in personalle identification was equal among the graduates. Medical graduates had higher awarenes of certain aspects like barr bodies and anthropometry whereas; Dental graduates were aware of the odontology aspects in identification of cases of rapes, child abuse, techniques like forensic radiology, bite mark analysis and sexual dimorphism in teeth. Conclusion: The study highlighted the difference in knowledge of forensic odontology between medical and dental students. It emphasized on the need of increasing awareness of the subject among medical graduates and to help them understand the role of their peers from the dental fraternity in forensic sciences. The study also stressed on the need of a forensic odontologist in the State Forensic Team.

Knowledge of tooth avulsion first aid management among parents residing in UAE

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge of parents visiting a specialized dental center in Ajman on permanent tooth avulsion and the required first aid procedure to achieve better prognoses. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Ajman Emirate, UAE. Three hundred eighty-eight parents from three nationalities (Emirati, Egyptian and Indian) residing in UAE answered a constructed questionnaire that included demographic information related to the participants and questions related to permanent tooth avulsion and the required first steps for its management. Results: Study findings reflect deficiencies in the following areas. Of the 388 parents, (236, 60.8%) had poor knowledge about permanent tooth avulsion. Parents who had previous knowledge obtained information from unsupported sources, such as friends (145, 37.4%). Out of 388 parents, (324, and 83.5%) would not replant the tooth. Finally, the majority of the participants did not know the proper media to store the avulsed permanent tooth with one-third of parents choosing cotton or water (142, 36.6%). Conclusion: This study showed a lack of knowledge regarding permanent tooth avulsion among parents from the major nationalities residing in UAE. However, the respondents represent major differences regarding related to knowledge, replant, and storage of avulsed permanent teeth.

An Ontological Approach for Dental Extraction Decision Making and Knowledge Dissemination – A Pilot Study for Dental Extraction Forceps

Tooth extraction is one of the most usual surgical procedure in the field of dental. Not having proper knowledge of tooth and extraction instruments may cause too much complexity in extraction procedure or even some damages to patients’ jaws. Mainly when using extraction forceps, the proper forceps should be used according to the teeth and the situation. So, it is very much important to have a sound knowledge of the instruments to be used, especially on extraction forceps. So, the knowledge of extraction forceps should be disseminated properly. After identifying this need, as a first stage, we gathered the information regarding the dental extraction forceps from the experts in the field. Then we started developing ontology as a second stage. Finally, the Knowledge Management (KM) Portal, which helps to share the knowledge of dental extraction, was developed. Since the quality and the accuracy of the ontology is the key in this research, it was evaluated and validated by using inbuilt FaCT++ 1.6.5 reasoner, online validator OOPS! and ontology experts as an iterative approach. It was also evaluated by using ontology non-experts in the final stage as an application-based (field test) evaluation. A questionnaire survey was conducted to the users to evaluate the KM portal (i.e., ontology). The results show that 85% of them are agreed and strongly agreed on the usefulness of the system. We confidently believe that our novel approach on dental extraction forceps KM portal can support all the dental related personnel to improve the knowledge and helpful in learning practices. Our next step is to model the ontology for the whole extraction process.

Analyzing the impact of conflictive dental characters on the phylogeny of octodontoid rodents

Systematics of fossil octodontoids (Rodentia, Caviomorpha) is in great part based on insights into the knowledge of teeth, making the step of dental characterization certainly relevant for the evolutionary reconstruction of these rodents. Different homology hypotheses were proposed for the same tooth structures, a fact that indicates the importance of knowing on which criteria the dental characters supporting the classifications were based. In this line, I evaluate the step of characterization of certain conflictive molar characters previously used, and their impact on phylogeny of octodontoids. I explore which the criteria followed to propose the hypotheses of correspondences for these characters are in light of the anatomical evidence. Relationship between preschooler's primary tooth caries and parental knowledge-behavior-knowledge of oral health in Hudong community in Pudong new area

Objective To explore the primary teeth caries status of preschoolers in Pudong community and its relevant factors of parental knowledge-belief-practice (KBP). Methods Using stratified random cluster sampling, a total of 1 179 children from 9 kindergartens in Hudong community in Pudong new area were examined. Oral cavity check-ups and parental questionnaire survey were conduced to understand the primary teeth caries rate of preschoolers and its related influencing factors. Results The prevalence rate of primary teeth caries was 53.2% and DMFT 2.79. The prevalence rate of primary teeth caries had statistical significance in different age groups (P<0.05). Multi-factor analysis showed that the influencing factors of primary teeth caries were age (P<0.05), parental education level (P<0.05), parental assistance of teeth brushing (P<0.05), children eating sweets before bedtime (P<0.05) and parental awareness for treating primary teeth (P<0.05). Conclusions The prevalence rate of primary teeth caries is high among the preschoolers of Pudong. And age, parental education level, parental preventive knowledge of teeth caries and poor eating habits are significant factors correlated with the incidence of dental caries in children. Oral health in young individuals with foreign and Swedish backgrounds — a ten-year perspective

To investigate oral health status and coherent determinants in children with foreign backgrounds compared with children with a Swedish background, during a ten year period. In 1993 and 2003, cross-sectional studies with random samples of individuals in the age groups 3, 5, 10 and 15 years were performed in Jönköping, Sweden. All the individuals were personally invited to a clinical and radiographic examination of their oral health status. They were also asked about their attitudes to and knowledge of teeth and oral health care habits. The final study sample comprised 739 children and adolescents, 154 with a foreign background (F cohort) and 585 with a Swedish background (S cohort). In both 1993 and 2003, more 3- and 5 year olds in the S cohort were caries-free compared with the F cohort. In 1993, dfs was higher among 3- and 5 year olds in the F cohort (p<0.01) compared with the S cohort. In 2003, dfs/DFS was statistically significantly higher in all age groups among children and adolescents in the F cohort compared with the S cohort. When it came to proximal tooth surfaces, the percentages of individuals who were caries-free, with initial carious lesions, with manifest carious lesions and with restorations among 10-year-olds in the F cohort were 55%, 23%, 4% and 18% in 1993. The corresponding figures for the S cohort were 69%, 20%, 6% and 5% respectively. In 2003, the values for the F cohort were 54%, 29%, 4% and 13% compared with 82%, 12%, 1% and 5% in the S cohort. In 2003, the odds of being exposed to dental caries among 10- and 15-yearolds in the F cohort, adjusted for gender and age, were more than six times higher (OR=6.3, 95% CI:2.51-15.61; p<0.001) compared with the S cohort. There has been a decline in caries prevalence between 1993 and 2003 in all age groups apart from 3-year-olds. However, the improvement in dfs/DFS was greater in the S cohort compared with the F cohort in all age groups. The difference between the F and S cohorts in terms of dfs/ DFS was larger in 2003 compared with 10 years earlier. In 2003, the odds ratio for being exposed to dental caries was almost six times higher for 10- and 15-year-olds with two foreign-born parents compared with their Swedish counterparts.
