Enhancing Job Satisfaction and Productivity through Knowledge Management Infrastructure: A Case of Construction Industry

This study rigorously investigates the influence of knowledge management infrastructures (KMI) on employees’ job satisfaction (JS) within the Iranian construction sector. It specifically investigates how structural, cultural, and technological facets of KMIs affect this satisfaction. The research adopts a quantitative methodology, utilizing established measurement tools from Gold et al. for KMIs and Hackman and Oldham for JS. The empirical Information was gathered via a survey distributed to stratified random sample of 150 employees and managers from five diverse construction firms in Iran. Examining the collected data with the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) approach, the study presents nuanced insights. It identifies that while cultural and technological infrastructures of KMIs significantly contribute to JS, the structural infrastructure does not exhibit a similar impact. Additionally, demographic factors such as age and professional experience were found to be non-contributory in the dynamics between KMIs and JS. However, gender and educational background emerged as significant moderating variables. Remarkably, employees with advanced academic qualifications reported higher satisfaction, likely due to the alignment of specialized knowledge with their professional roles. This research contributes to the current knowledge base by outlining the distinct components of KMIs that bolster JS in the construction industry, thereby offering a targeted framework for industry practitioners and policymakers to enhance employee well-being and organizational efficiency.

Knowledge Management Practice and Organizational Performance in the Context of International Schools

This exploratory study delves into three private international schools' knowledge management (KM) practices amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. Utilizing Gold et al.'s KM framework, the research examines the applicability of this model in the unique industrial context of international schools and explores the potential influence of KM on organizational performance within this context. The findings highlight that teachers proficient in articulating KM processes and infrastructure perceive their schools as more successful in the international education landscape. As schools transition back to in-person learning, leaders and stakeholders are urged to evaluate their KM practices and consider targeted initiatives to cultivate specific competencies, fostering a sustainable competitive advantage and enhancing both financial and non-financial firm performance. This study's originality lies in examining KM practices in international schools during the pandemic, stimulating conversations among school leaders and stakeholders to optimize knowledge management in the post-pandemic era.

Knowledge Management and Competitive Advantage in Selected Manufacturing Firms in Akwa Ibom State

This paper was designed to examine the relationship between Knowledge management and Organizational competitiveness. The main objective of this study was to examine the relationship between knowledge management and competitive advantage in selected manufacturing firms in Akwa Ibom State. In line with the research objective was the research questions and hypothesis. Survey research design was adopted for the study and a sample size of 105 respondents were drawn from the population using census sampling technique. The major instrument for data collection was a structured questionnaire administered to the respondent using stratified sampling techniques. Data collected were analysed using simple percentage and Pearson Product Moment Correlation. Results showed a significant positive relationship between each of the two dimensions of knowledge management (organizational learning, = Rx1 =0.799 amd Knowledge retention = Rx2 =0. 825**,) and organizational competitiveness at the selected manufacturing firms in Akwa Ibom State. It was recommended that, firm managers and knowledge management implementation members should incorporate organizational learning, knowledge retension, as part of Knowledge Management infrastructure capabilities in addition to culture, structure, and information technology in order to make their Knowledge Management infrastructure capabilities more robust.

The impact of knowledge-oriented leadership on innovation performance with e-based knowledge management system as mediating variable

This study investigates how knowledge-oriented leadership impacts on innovation performance both directly and indirectly mediated electronic based knowledge management systems (e-based KMS). Where, electronic knowledge management system consists of knowledge management infrastructures, and knowledge management processes. Primary data was obtained through a questionnaire given to 110 managers or directors of the manufacturing company as respondents. In addition, data were also obtained through observation techniques, and interviews with respondents. Both descriptive statistical analysis, and structural equation modelling (SEM) was used as an analysis method. The findings suggest that knowledge-oriented leadership has a positive, direct, and significant influence on knowledge management infrastructures as well as knowledge management processes. However, knowledge-oriented leadership has no direct influence on innovation performance. The findings also indicate that electronic knowledge management systems that consist of knowledge management infrastructures, and knowledge management processes have a direct, positive, and significant influence on innovation performance. This study suggested that there are two key pathways for businesses to improve their innovation performance i.e.: enhancing the technological, cultural, and structural infrastructure of the company, and enhancing knowledge creation, use, and utilization.

Impact of Knowledge Management Strategies on Organizational Ambidexterity Mediated by Organizational Learning Capability

Background: This study intends to investigate the relationship between organizational ambidexterity and knowledge management practices, with a focus on travel and tourism industries specifically. The research is conducted using a descriptive-correlation approach and involves 72 businesses located in Qom, Mashhad, and Tehran. A total of 369 managers and personnel from these organizations participated in the study, providing valuable insights into the dynamics of knowledge management and its impact on organizational learning and ambidexterity within the tourism sector. Methods: In this study, descriptive-correlation research methodology was used. Data were collected through a questionnaire distributed to 369 managers and personnel from 72 tourism organizations. The questionnaire focused on assessing the participants' perspectives on knowledge management strategies, organizational learning capability, and organizational ambidexterity. This quantitative approach allowed for the examination of relationships and mediation effects within the specified variables. Findings: The results of the study show substantial correlation between organizational ambidexterity, learning ability, and knowledge management techniques. It was found to be fascinating that the relationship between organizational ambidexterity and knowledge management strategies in the tourism setting was partially mediated by organizational learning capacity. Conclusion: In conclusion, tourism companies should place a high priority on implementing both explicit and tacit knowledge management strategies in order to attain structural ambidexterity. Effective HRM procedures as well as the advancement of knowledge management and information technology infrastructures must serve as the cornerstones of these strategies. Encouraging learning, unlearning, relearning, experimentation, and knowledge sharing are pivotal for enhancing organizational learning capability and, consequently, achieving organizational ambidexterity. This study underscores the need for a holistic approach that integrates human and technological elements to foster a dynamic and adaptable organizational structure in the tourism sector.

Health and social care managers' perceptions of factors affecting the competence of managers in knowledge management: A qualitative study.

To describe health and social care managers' perceptions of the factors affecting the competence of managers in knowledge management. A qualitative descriptive study. A semi-structured interview was conducted with 15 managers from three public health and social care organizations in Finland. Data were collected in the spring of 2022 and analysed using inductive content analysis. Health and social care managers perceived that the competence of managers working in knowledge management is affected by managers' behavioural and attitudinal characteristics, their interactive network competence in knowledge management, the dimensions of their competence in knowledge management, the knowledge management infrastructure with which they work and the organizational learning culture within which they work. The competence of health and social managers in knowledge management is influenced by various factors, including their personal characteristics, management competence and the infrastructure and culture of the organization for which they work. However, their competence is constrained by an absence of clear processes, structures and resources in knowledge management as well as a lack of systematic support and training for managers working in knowledge management. The study provides valuable information for improving the competence of managers working in knowledge management in health and social care organizations. The competence of managers working in knowledge management is instrumental for successful implementation and sustaining of knowledge management practices and thus, such competence has a positive impact on the overall performance of an organization. Clarifying the roles and responsibilities of health and social care managers, as well as establishing organizational structures, is essential for effective knowledge management in organizations. Farmers perspectives on options for and barriers to implementing climate resilient agriculture and implications for climate adaptation policy

The impacts of climate change in low lying coastal areas, such as Bangladesh, are adversely affecting food and livelihood security, requiring adaptation to build resilience. However, effective implementation is limited by a lack of local-level knowledge regarding the barriers that prevent adoption and up-scaling of climate resilient agriculture (CRA). Case studies in coastal Bangladesh provide novel insights regarding barriers to planned and autonomous adaptation from the perspective of farmers facing multiple climate change impacts across seven key dimensions of CRA (agrometeorology services, water management practices, nutrient management activities, technologies and knowledge management activities, infrastructure development, socio-economic resilience, and institutions and good governance). Farmers generally perceive that adaptation actions increase resilience in crop production systems and their surrounding social systems, but also identify the important barriers that inhibit or constrain planned and autonomous adaptation opportunities. Planned adaptation actions are perceived to be limited by institutional arrangements and lack of implementation capacity. Autonomous adaptation was found to be dependent on income level, farm-holding size, access to input resources and services and peer/social influences. Planned and autonomous adaptation actions were both affected by specific social and geographic contexts and cultural factors. Recommendations are suggested to address key constraints and thereby promote CRA in coastal agricultural landscapes in Bangladesh and in other developing countries confronting similar challenges.

Indigenous knowledge management practices in subsistence farming: A comprehensive evaluation

The research evaluated the levels to which subsistence yam farmers operationalized indigenous knowledge management during the COVID-19 period. A descriptive survey approach was employed. The research comprised 120 randomly selected peasant yam farmers. Means, t-test, standard deviation, and ANOVA analysis were used to evaluate the data. The level of indigenous knowledge management process in terms of conversion, distribution, acquisition, application, and protection was moderate amongst the peasant yam farmers. Again, the level of indigenous knowledge management infrastructure in terms of culture, structure and technology was moderate amongst the peasant yam farmers. The study did not find a significant difference in the operationalization of indigenous knowledge management between male and female participants. Nevertheless, the study revealed a significant difference in the levels of operationalization of indigenous knowledge management among the different extension operational zones. Practically, the study emphasizes the significance of using, documenting, and reusing indigenous knowledge management strategies, thus, experienced (tacit), discovered (implicit), and known (explicit) knowledge which enriches the knowledge management literature. These strategies are highly beneficial in fulfilling the information requirements of farmers, particularly in times of a pandemic like COVID-19. It is recommended that training and capacity-building programs be provided to peasant yam farmers on effective knowledge management techniques. Older farmers need to be encouraged to mentor and pass down their indigenous knowledge to younger generations to ensure the continuity of valuable traditional practices.

The effect of organizational ambidexterity on sustainable performance: A structural equation analysis applied to the Spanish wine industry

AbstractThis research analyzes how organizational ambidexterity (OA) affects sustainable performance in the Spanish wine industry, as well as the catalytic role of corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices and knowledge management infrastructure (KMI) on these variables. For this purpose, a theoretical model is elaborated based on the literature review carried out, which is contrasted following a quantitative approach by means of structural equation modeling (PLS‐SEM) with primary data collected from 202 Spanish wineries between September 2021 and January 2022. The research results show that there is a positive and significant relationship between OA and sustainable performance. Likewise, OA partially mediates the CSR‐sustainable performance and KMI‐sustainable performance relationship. Thus, the present research contributes to the literature in several ways. First, to the best of our knowledge, there are no previous studies that have analyzed the effect of OA on sustainable performance in the wine context, which represents an opportunity to advance scientific knowledge. Second, to our knowledge, there is no previous scientific production that has analyzed what may be the triggers of OA. Third, the proposed theoretical model has not been addressed previously, so that, through the research, a new way of understanding the improvement in the economic, social and environmental performance of wineries is formulated [EconLit Citations: L66, 03, M1].

Influence of knowledge management infrastructure on knowledge creation processes. A study in the primary sector

Under the theoretical approaches of the resource-based view of the firm, the dynamic capabilities and the knowledge-based view of the firm, the purpose of this paper is to analyze the influence that the knowledge management infrastructure has on knowledge creation processes in primary sector companies, specifically, the aquaculture sector. For the empirical analysis, the SEM-PLS approach was used on a sample of 186 shrimp farms in Ecuador. Results confirm that the environment and organizational structure, and culture influence knowledge creation, while technological resources are not significant. This can be explained by the characteristics of the central activities of the shrimp companies and the assignment of functions. From a theoretical point of view, this paper links the knowledge-based view of the firm with the activities of the primary sector. Specifically, a theoretical model is developed in which the variables that can influence the knowledge creation processes of shrimp farms are studied. Existing works in the scientific literature that analyze both perspectives are practically nil. From a managerial perspective, given the importance of the creation and renewal of knowledge to develop organizational capabilities in the face of the dynamism of the market, the findings of this study can guide managers to understand how the combination of resources can help increase stocks of knowledge useful to business objectives.

Knowledge Management and its Role in the Development of a Smart University in Iraq

There is a lack of extensive research on the development of smart universities (SU). The aim of this paper is to investigate the impact of knowledge management (KM) on the development of SU (DSU) in Iraq. According to the knowledge-based view (KBV), resource-based view (RBV), and KM capability model, this study suggests that the KM process (KMP) and KM infrastructure (KMI) have a positive impact on SUs development. Furthermore, the study suggests that KMI functions as a mediator. The study was conducted using a sample of five public universities in Iraq. A purposive sampling method was utilised to collect data from a total of 209 academic staff members. The study's results demonstrate that KMP (knowledge acquisition, knowledge sharing, and knowledge application) and KMI (IT infrastructure and human KM) have a significant impact on the DSU. Additionally, it was discovered that KMI plays a role in mediating the influence of KMP on the DSU. The findings indicate that successful KM can support the progress of SU. Further cross-national and variable-based studies are required to enhance the validity of this conclusion.

Do knowledge-oriented leadership and knowledge management capabilities help firms to stimulate ambidextrous innovation: moderating role of technological turbulence

PurposeGiven the decisive role of knowledge-oriented leadership (KOL) in boosting organizational innovation capacities, the research intends to investigate the effect of KOL on ambidextrous innovation with the mediating effect of knowledge management capability (KMC). Furthermore, technological turbulence (TT) is regarded as a moderator in the relationship between KMC and ambidextrous innovation.Design/methodology/approachThe data obtained from 122 Pakistani manufacturing firms were used to evaluate the proposed relationships using the partial least square structural equation modeling approach.FindingsThe empirical findings demonstrate that KOL positively affects both aspects of ambidextrous innovation, namely exploitative innovation (EII) and exploratory innovation (ERI), with a higher effect on EII. Additionally, knowledge management process capability (KMPC) partially mediates the association between KOL and both dimensions of ambidextrous innovation (EII and ERI). Similarly, knowledge management infrastructure capability (KMIC) mediates the link between KOL and ERI but does not mediate the relationship between KOL and EII. The impacts of the KMPC and KMIC on EII are also significantly moderated by TT, although the link between the two components of the KMC (KMPC and KMIC) and ERI is unaffected.Practical implications The research provides useful knowledge and a novel strategy for policymakers to foster KOL and invest in KMC to improve the capabilities of Pakistani manufacturing firms in terms of innovation.Originality/value The research has contributed significantly to the resources-based view and knowledge-based view (KBV) literature by examining the various mediation moderation mechanisms and offering greater insights into the relationship between KOL and firms, KMC, and ambidextrous innovations.

Knowledge Management Infrastructure on Organizational Performance in Indonesian Science Institutions (LIPI): Mediation Effects of Knowledge Management Process

As a research institution, the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) plays a crucial role in driving innovation and leveraging knowledge to improve people's welfare and the nation's competitiveness. This study analyzes the impact of knowledge management on the performance of science and technology correctional-based organizations at LIPI. This study aims to determine the relationship between knowledge management, including knowledge management infrastructure and processes, and organizational performance. The sample used in this study were employees responsible for the dissemination of science and technology in five service work units at LIPI, with a total of 115 respondents. The analytical method utilized in this study is a quantitative method using SEM PLS. The results of this study demonstrates that: (1) There is a significantly positive relationship between knowledge management infrastructure and knowledge management process; (2) There is a significantly positive effect in the relationship between knowledge management infrastructure and organizational performance; (3) There is a positive and significant relationship between knowledge management process and organizational performance; and (4) The knowledge management process mediates the relationship between knowledge management infrastructure and organizational performance. The results indicated that the science and technology correctional service-based work unit at LIPI have implemented knowledge management practices well in terms of infrastructure and processes. Conceptual model of knowledge management system for scholarly publication cycle in academic institution

Purpose Study on knowledge-based systems for scientific publications is growing very broadly. However, most of these studies do not explicitly discuss the knowledge management (KM) component as knowledge management system (KMS) implementation. This background causes academic institutions to face challenges in developing KMS to support scholarly publication cycle (SPC). Therefore, this study aims to develop a new KMS conceptual model, Identify critical components and provide research gap opportunities for future KM studies on SPC. Design/methodology/approach This study used a systematic literature review (SLR) method with the procedure from Kitchenham et al. Then, the SLR results are compiled into a conceptual model design based on a framework on KM foundations and KM solutions. Finally, the model design was validated through interviews with related field experts. Findings The KMS for SPC focuses on the discovery, sharing and application of knowledge. The majority of KMS use recommendation systems technology with content-based filtering and collaborative filtering personalization approaches. The characteristics data used in KMS for SPC are structured and unstructured. Metadata and article abstracts are considered sufficiently representative of the entire article content to be used as a search tool and can provide recommendations. The KMS model for SPC has layers of KM infrastructure, processes, systems, strategies, outputs and outcomes. Research limitations/implications This study has limitations in discussing tacit knowledge. In contrast, tacit knowledge for SPC is essential for scientific publication performance. The tacit knowledge includes experience in searching, writing, submitting, publishing and disseminating scientific publications. Tacit knowledge plays a vital role in the development of knowledge sharing system (KSS) and KCS. Therefore, KSS and KCS for SPC are still very challenging to be researched in the future. KMS opportunities that might be developed further are lessons learned databases and interactive forums that capture tacit knowledge about SPC. Future work potential could identify other types of KMS in academia and focus more on SPC. Originality/value This study proposes a novel comprehensive KMS model to support scientific publication performance. This model has a critical path as a KMS implementation solution for SPC. This model proposes and recommends appropriate components for SPC requirements (KM processes, technology, methods/techniques and data). This study also proposes novel research gaps as KMS research opportunities for SPC in the future.

Knowledge Mobilization in Agile Information Systems Projects: A Literature Analysis

This study focuses on how knowledge is mobilized in agile information systems (IS) projects. One crucial success factor of those projects is to mobilize knowledge through different knowledge management processes. It is vital to establish efficient knowledge management (KM) processes to generate a knowledge culture based on transparency and communication. Communication channels, digital tools, and platforms are essential for establishing a KM infrastructure supporting the knowledge work of the project organization. Thus, each IS implementation team should maintain a knowledge base and a knowledge potential at some level. However, this is not always the case. We conducted a literature review to survey the extant research on the role of KM in agile system development projects. The agile approach is often associated with the networking model and tacit knowledge. The findings indicate that the agile approach is supposed to promote KM. While tacit knowledge is rooted in the analogue process of continuous actions and informal communication, explicit knowledge is captured in digital records of documentation and databases. In KM, the personalization model (behavioural, networking) and the codification (technocratic, repository) model is central. The choice of system development method (agile versus plan-driven) influences how knowledge is mobilized in the project organization. An agile approach heavily relies on informal communication, tacit knowledge sharing, and light documentation. In contrast, the plan-driven methods such as the waterfall approach generate more explicit knowledge through documentation. Communities of practice are important structures for transforming from plan-driven to agile approaches. We present a framework showing specific challenges the literature identifies concerning the efficient mobilization of knowledge in the agile context. For large-scale agile projects, informal coordination mechanisms were important. This study identifies several measures for overcoming barriers and risks for knowledge sharing in the agile context.

Perspectives on knowledge management capabilities in universities: A qualitative identification of organisational factors

AbstractPrior research has had a limited approach to identifying organisational factors related to knowledge management (KM) practices of higher education institutions (HEIs), the centre for knowledge creation. This qualitative study explored such factors affecting KM capabilities from the perspectives of 30 full‐time academics in public universities, and identified the dimensions of the KM capabilities framework. Results revealed that physical conditions, budget, human and technological resource management, division of labour, workload, time management, communication, bureaucracy, structural differentiation, motivation, individualism, and organisational behaviour affect KM infrastructure capabilities; bureaucracy, KM teams, institutional platforms, organisational structure, knowledge maps, vision, individual attitudes, academic collaboration, process management, budget, decision‐making processes, sustainable academic KM, transparency, labour force, knowledge security, organisational culture, accessibility, and archiving affect KM process capabilities. These results contribute to identifying the organisational factors influencing KM that are critical to guiding practitioners and administrators of HEIs in developing more effective KM strategies and practices.

Knowledge management process, infrastructure, and system quality as resilient strategies to respond to COVID‐19 pandemic challenges: Evidence from higher educational institutions in India

The COVID‐19 global pandemic has adversely affected educational institutions worldwide, resulting in frequent mandatory lockdowns and social distancing rules. After waiting for a brief period, most organizations, including educational institutions, moved their operations from traditional in‐class to virtual, web‐based teaching‐learning. As a result of unprecedented change, faculty, students, and administrators faced several challenges. However, how the educational institutions were coping with this challenging situation remained an important question. To address this, we present Knowledge Management Process (KMP), Knowledge Management System Infrastructure (KMSINF), and Knowledge Management System Quality (KMSQU) as resilient strategies to convert the challenges into opportunities. Using the KM processes and practices, a complex model is constructed to positively influence employee commitment, performance, and job satisfaction. A survey instrument was used to collect data from 747 faculty members from 14 higher educational institutions in the southern part of India. After testing the measurement properties using the Lisrel package of structural equation modeling, the complex model was tested using Hayes PROCESS macros. The results indicate (i) KMP is positively related to performance and employee commitment, (ii) employee commitment mediates the relationship between KMP and performance, (iii) KMSINF moderates the relationship between KMP and employee commitment, (iv) KMSQU moderates the moderated relationship between KMP and KMSINF in influencing the employee commitment, and (v) performance is positively related to job satisfaction. The results suggest that KM processes, system infrastructure, and system quality are effective, resilient strategies to bring educational institutions to normal functioning during the present global pandemic. The implications for KM, employee commitment, and job satisfaction are discussed.
