Moderating Effect of Structural Holes on Absorptive Capacity and Knowledge-Innovation Performance: Empirical Evidence from Chinese Firms

Under open innovation, the position of the innovation subject in the knowledge network plays a vital role. The purpose of this paper was to identify the role of structural holes in the relationship between the knowledge-absorption capacity and the innovation performance. Previous studies have ignored the role of structural holes in this relationship. Moreover, there are differences between structural-hole theory and weak-relationship theory on the mechanism of the network location on the innovation performance. A hierarchical regression model was applied to test the hypothesis. The findings from a study of 74 Chinese-listed integrated-circuit companies confirm the positive effect that the absorptive capacity has on the innovation performance, as well as the moderating role of structural holes in this relationship. By benefiting from the advantages of information and control, structural-hole spanners often have stronger knowledge-absorption abilities, and they thus achieve higher innovation performances. The results suggest that the synergy of structural holes should be taken seriously by those enterprises that are trying to strengthen their knowledge-absorption abilities to improve their innovation performances.

Evaluation of Regional Knowledge Innovation System in China: An Economic Framework Based on Dynamic Slacks-based Approach

The paper proposes a knowledge innovation performance model by the dynamic data envelopment analysis with slacks-based measure approach for evaluating the effectiveness of 30 regional knowledge innovation activities in China from 2010 to 2016. In recent years, China has paid more attention to knowledge innovation activities, as central and local governments have pushed on with their innovation projects by lots of investment whatever the difficulties may be. Decision-maker is usually interested in judge its knowledge innovation performance relative to target benchmark by exploring whether one provincial administration region performs better among others and/or if the growth of economy will be benefited greatly by the knowledge innovation activities. To acquire the managerial insight about this issue from a comprehensively designed performance evaluation model, knowledge innovation activity is conceptualized as an intertemporal production process. Invention patent and regional gross product are imposed on desirable outputs, highlighting the need for knowledge economy. The empirical result shows that knowledge innovation has a positive effect on economic development. At the same time, decision-maker should be interest in the economic effect of patents' type and quality. The government should then encourage new technical applications with greater commercial value from a market-oriented perspective, in order to benefit the most from the innovation process in the short-run.

The Relation between Knowledge Heterogeneity and Knowledge Innovation Performance of R & D Team

Using a sample of 252 R & D teams in Guangzhou, Foshan, Shenzhen, the researcher empirically examines the relationship between knowledge heterogeneity and knowledge innovation performance, the mediating role of knowledge share. Results indicate that knowledge heterogeneity is positively related to knowledge share, the same with knowledge share and knowledge innovation performance. This paper analyzes the results comprehensively and makes recommendations from multiple perspectives including building the knowledge heterogeneous steams, advocating the collaborative spirit, building a knowledge shared platform, improving the organizational structure, and grooming the communication.

The Innovation Value Chain in New Technology‐Based Firms: Evidence from theU.K.

Innovation is central to the survival and growth of firms, and ultimately to the health of the economies of which they are part. A clear understanding both of the processes by which firms perform innovation and the benefits which flow from innovation in terms of productivity and growth is therefore essential. This paper demonstrates the use of a conceptual framework and modeling tool, the innovation value chain (IVC), and shows how theIVCapproach helps to highlight strengths and weaknesses in the innovation performance of a key group of firms—new technology‐based firms. The value of theIVCis demonstrated in showing the key interrelationships in the whole process of innovation from sourcing knowledge through product and process innovation to performance in terms of the growth and productivity outcomes of different types of innovation. The use of theIVChighlights key complementarities, such as that between internalR&D, externalR&D, and other external sources of knowledge. Other important relationships are also highlighted. Skill resources matter throughout theIVC, being positively associated with external knowledge linkages and innovation success, and also having a direct influence on growth independent of the effect on innovation. A key benefit of theIVCapproach is therefore its ability to highlight the roles of different factors at various stages of the knowledge–innovation–performance nexus, and to show their indirect as well as direct impact. This in turn permits both managerial and policy implications to be drawn.
