A Particular Case of Urban Sustainability: Comparison Study of the Efficiency of Multiple Thermal Insulations for Buildings

Achieving urban sustainability is a complex process that includes improving buildings’ resilience and energy efficiency by using the optimum thermal insulation solution. With the advent of new energy restrictions, it is very important to find the best compromise between the price of the thermal insulation material and energy savings because, sometimes, the initial cost of a thermal rehabilitation seems to be very high. The purpose of this study is to illustrate the variations in the amount of heat energy required by a multi-storey residential structure in Romania that uses 14 various kinds of thermal insulation materials. The energy demand is determined using the dynamic method using a building energy simulator that can evaluate the energy usage of lighting, warmth, ventilation, climate control, and water heating.

Influence of Thermal Alternation on the Interface between Insulation Layer and Bonding Mortar

The safety of the external thermal insulation system has been widely concerned by people. In this paper, strain gauges and temperature sensor are preset at the interface of bonding layer/insulation layer, bonding layer/mortar layer. The interface stress variation rules of graphite polystyrene board, polystyrene board and homogeneous board were studied under 30 times of thermal alternating environment and the test results were analyzed in combination with physical properties of the materials. The results show that the strain at the interface of the samples composed of three kinds of thermal insulation materials increases with the increase of the number of thermal alternating cycles. The total interfacial strain of the sample composed of homogeneous board is the largest, and that of graphite polystyrene board is the smallest.

Energy saving technology of wall insulation of harbor building based on energy cost analysis

Seaport buildings have been affected by marine moisture for a long time, but most of the wall thermal insulation studies have not considered the moisture transfer effect of the wall structure. Therefore, considering the moisture transfer function of the wall structure and the energy consumption of solar radiation, based on the energy cost analysis, the paper puts forward the research on the wall thermal insulation and energy-saving technology of the harbor building based on the energy cost analysis. Grey clustering is used to analyze the project cost and environmental benefits to determine the index weight. By using two kinds of thermal insulation materials and three kinds of insulation positions, the thermal performance and condensation characteristics of the wall are analyzed. It is found that increasing the thickness of the insulation layer is conducive to reducing the heat loss of the wall. Extruded polystyrene foam (XPS) thermal insulation material is better than expandable polystyrene board (EPS) insulation material, while EPS is more economical and energy-saving than XPS.

Integrated utilization of high alumina fly ash for synthesis of foam glass ceramic

Due to the numerous increase of the building energy consumption and huge volume of industrial wastes produced in China, the development of thermal insulation materials is quite needed. Herein, foam glass ceramic, a kind of thermal insulation materials, was fabricated by using solid wastes high alumina fly ash and waste glass as the main raw materials. First, in this study the proportion scheme of this research was designed by using Factsage 7.1 and the foaming agent was CaSO4. Secondly, the decomposition of calcium sulfate and the influence of process parameters, namely the sintering temperature and the foaming agent additive amount, on the microstructure and mechanical properties of foam glass ceramic were investigated. The experimental results showed that when the proposed foam glass ceramic was sintered at between 1180 and 1220 °C, it exerted excellent macro and micro properties. The optimum parameters were 2% CaSO4 addition and sintering temperature of 1200 °C, and the corresponding bulk density and compress strength values were 0.98 g/cm3 and 9.84 MPa, respectively. Overall these results indicated that the preparation of foam glass ceramic made up a promising strategy for recycling industrial waste into new kind of building insulation materials.

Thermal and electrical analysis of SiGe thermoelectric unicouple filled with thermal insulation materials

Thermoelectric performance of SiGe unicouple filled with four kinds of thermal insulation materials is simulated using finite element method. Crucial design parameters including thermoelectric leg length L, space ti, hot side temperature Th within 1073–1223 K and cold side temperature Tc within 573–773 K were evaluated for their impact on the unicouple performance. Unicouple models consisted of SiGe served in RTG on board Cassini spacecraft (Cassini SiGe) and home-made ball milled SiGe (BM SiGe) are analyzed, respectively. It is found that the power output per unit area PA, heat absorption per unit area QhA and heat released per unit area QcA are inversely proportional to leg length and space area between legs. The conversion efficiency η of SiGe thermoelectric legs is ∼7.5% at Th = 1223 K (1173 K) and Tc = 573 K. η of unicouple will decrease to below 1% if there is no fillers in the space between legs. For unicouple filled with thermal insulation materials, radiation heat is shielded, and heat flow from filler will lead to a η decrease of 0.07–0.5%, where ηunicouple of 7.09% and 6.89% can be obtained, respectively. A model calculating system mass and power density for thermoelectric generator is built, and is used to optimize the system.

Porous thermal insulation materials derived from fly ash using a foaming and slip casting method

The paper introduces a new kind of thermal insulation material using coal fly ash as main raw material by the method of foaming and slip casting process. The foaming ability of the suspensions with solid loading of 30, 35 and 40wt% at different foaming agent additive levels were measured. The green bodies were then sintered under different sintering temperatures from 850°C to 1000°C for 2h following the steps of foaming and drying. Effects of solid loading of suspensions and sintering temperature on the porosity, compressive strength and thermal conductivity were investigated. The sintered bodies, with porosity from 86.3vol.% to 94.5vol.% and compressive strength from 0.43MPa to 1.01MPa, contained spherical pores with no preferred orientation. The thermal conductivity of the sintered thermal insulation material, measured by the transient plane source (TPS) at room temperature, could reach as low as 0.0511W/(mK). As an environmental friendly material, it is suitable for wall application to save energy.

Life Cycle Assessment of Rock Wool Board and EPS Board

Although outer wall thermal insulation technology is an effective measure for building energy-saving, the production of thermal insulation materials causes serious impacts on environment. In the present investigation the resource, energy consumption and environmental emission of the two kinds of thermal insulation materials were analyzed, from the acquisition of raw materials to production process based on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). The result show that life cycle energy consumption of rock wool board is 415MJ per functional unit, proximately twice of EPS board’s (220MJ). Overall, environmental impact indicators caused by rock wool board is more serious than EPS.

This paper mainly presents the source of rock-mineral wool, its main relative merits as well as its application in the construction field, moreover, the application and development potential of rock-mineral wool as the thermal insulation material for building wall construction.

Study of the Combustion Performance of Three Kinds of Organic Heat Insulation Materials

In this research, the combustion performances and the smoke toxic of three kinds of thermal insulation materials: Expanded Polystyrene (XPS) insulation boards, polyurethane and rube-plastic sponge were studied by single burning item test(SBI), limiting oxygen index (LOI), oxygen bomb combustion heat and smoke toxicity test. Results showed that fireproof safety performance of the polyurethane is worst.
