This research is entitled “Deviation of the Principle of Cooperation in the Creation of Humor in Ali Akbar's Stand-Up Comedy Oral Discourse: A Pragmatic Study”. There are two problems in this research, namely what deviations of the principle of cooperation are contained in the oral discourse of Ali Akbar's stand-up comedy, and what kind of humor is contained in the oral discourse of Ali Akbar's stand-up comedy. This study aims to classify the form of deviation of the principle of cooperation used as a means of creating humor contained in the oral discourse of Ali Akbar's stand-up comedy. The theory used in this study is the theory of the principle of cooperation Grice in Wijana (1996). The data collection method used is the listening method equipped with the tapping technique and the advanced technique of free listening and speaking and the note-taking technique. The data analysis method is the matching method and the distribution method. The method of presenting the results of the data analysis used in this study is the informal method. Based on the analysis that has been carried out, the form of deviation of the principle of cooperation is found to include, deviation of single maxims and deviation of double maxims. The humor contained is joking, insulting, complaining, and satirizing.

Using Humor in the Health/Physical Education Classroom to Create an Enjoyable Learning Environment

The purpose of this article is to show that health and physical education (HPE) teachers who implement humor in the classroom intentionally create a more relaxed classroom environment, build stronger relationships with students, and engage students in the learning process. Humor used as an instructional strategy eases teacher stress and engages students, leading to a comfortable and welcoming classroom climate. Students feel connected, relaxed and calm when humor is implemented in the classroom. Three theories of humor are briefly described, with Incongruity Theory identified as the primary way to conceptualize using humor in the classroom as a teaching practice. Different kinds of humor are introduced that can be implemented in the classroom. This article also identifies the types of humor considered inappropriate for the classroom. Strategies for implementing humor as a pedagogical practice are discussed to help HPE teachers reach the laugh-into-engagement effect.

The Humor Advantage: Humorous Bragging Benefits Job Candidates and Entrepreneurs.

From job candidates to entrepreneurs, people often face an inherent tension between the need to share personal accomplishments and the need to avoid appearing arrogant. We propose that humorbragging-incorporating self-enhancing humor into self-promoting communications-can signal warmth and competence simultaneously, leading to instrumental benefits. Four studies explored humorbragging as a potential solution to the self-promotion paradox. Study 1 demonstrated that a humorbragging (vs. self-promoting) resume attracted more hiring interest from recruiters. Study 2 showed that perceived warmth and competence mediate the positive effect of humorbragging on hiring intentions. Study 3 found that humorbragging entrepreneurs achieved greater success securing funding compared to entrepreneurs who used other kinds of humor. Finally, Studies 4a to 4c established that the positive effect of humorbragging on hiring intentions is unique to self-enhancing humor. Overall, the current research establishes the instrumental benefits of humorbragging and explains why and when it functions as an effective impression management strategy.

Dark Humor in the Poetry of Sherman Alexie and Ahmed Matar: A Comparative Study

Dark humor is a form of comedy that explores taboo topics such as death, disease, and tragedy. While it is often controversial and can be offensive to some, it is also a means of coping with difficult or uncomfortable topics and offering a fresh perspective on societal norms. Just as stated by Merriam-Webster’s Encyclopedia of Literature, dark humor or black humor is a kind of humor that is marked by the use of morbid, ironic, or grotesquely comic episodes that ridicule human folly. However, this paper examines the concept of dark humor by tackling some of the significant poems of the English poet “Sherman Alexie” and the Iraqi poet “Ahmed Matar.” Those two poets discuss subjects and problems of real-life experiences. The purpose of this research is to shed light on Native Americans' daily lives on reservations and demonstrate their pain as well as the poet’s personal experience there, which is discussed by Sherman Alexie in his poems, “Futures”, “Traveling”, “Translated from the American”, “Giving Blood”, “War all the time”, “Reservation cap driver”, “The mice war”. While the Iraqi poet tended to criticize Arab rules, the lack of freedom they force, their use of torture, the government, and their persuasion of authority at all costs. Here are some of his notable poems that this research are going to explain and make critique in details. “They put a watchdog on my mouth", "وَضَعوا فوقَ فمي كلبَ حِراسه", “My awful silence”, "صمتي الرهيب", “The lost Caravan”, "قافلة تائهة". Ultimately, this paper aims to offer a fair viewpoint on the usage of dark humor and to stimulate additional investigation into its psychological and social significance. It can be hypothesized that Dark humor has been used heavenly by Ahmed Matar and Sherman Alexie in their poetry, and the researcher is going to show the importance of using humor is to attack the capitalist system, as in Sherman Alexie country, and the ruthless hegemonic government as in Ahmed Matar' country. It is used to show vulgarity of governments and to amuse the audience to certain extent.

Does humour used in EFL classrooms in Islamic higher education reflect Islamic values?

ABSTRACT This study examined the use of humour in EFL classrooms in Islamic higher education in Indonesia. It intends to find out whether Indonesian EFL teacher educators used humour as pedagogy and how they used it. Using a narrative inquiry method, it involved 25 EFL students undertaking English Writing courses working in groups of two or three members to write descriptive texts on the humorous moments in their classroom process. Nine of them were purposively selected for analysis using humour theories and removed the rest because of not humorous moments. It revealed that the teacher educators used various kinds of humour in EFL classrooms, such as humorous comments, lecturers’ humorous life stories, puns, and teasing students. However, most were unrelated to the course materials they taught and did not reflect Islamic values. In conclusion, this study has provided insights into humour used in the Indonesian Islamic higher education, which is crucial for academics to pay attention to using humour, such as not harming students.

Study of Humor Research from the Perspective of Cooperative Principle and Politeness Principle in Comic Sketch “Huan Bu Huan”

Comic sketch has become an essential part of the China Media Group Spring Festival Gala Evening stage every year. Its form is simple and the verbal has some kind of humor. Through the dialogue between the person, the comic sketch is loved by the audience. To make jokes, the actors in the comic sketches often violate the Cooperative Principle and Politeness Principle to realize the pragmatic functions of humor. Grice’s Cooperative Principle in daily communication, communicators should follow the principle of a particular task. Linguist Leech put forward the Politeness Principle. The principle is an addition to the Cooperative Principle and is further extended. This paper under the perspective of the Cooperative Principle and Politeness Principle in the comic sketch Huan bu huan of the 2022 China Media Group Spring Festival Gala Evening, some humorous dialogues are analyzed. Results showed that these dialogues for violating the rules produced between the lines to achieve the humorous effect. The purpose of this paper is to deepen people’s understanding of comic sketch language and to provide a reference for the audience to appreciate the unique artistic and aesthetic value of the comic sketch.

Challenging the stereotype through humor? Comic female scientists in animated TV series for young audiences

Stereotypical representations about what scientists do, look like, and how they behave are cognized in early childhood and refined throughout life, through direct or indirect contact with the STEM communication climate, whether it be direct interactions with scientists, science education, communique, or entertainment. Popular media (TV) plays an important role in influencing our ideas of science by constructing images of social science reality. What has rarely been discussed in these contexts is what kind of scientific stereotypes are reinforced or challenged in popular TV shows for young audiences, particularly regarding female scientists. Using qualitative textual analysis, this paper examines how female scientists are portrayed through humor (and what kind of humor) in two popular animated entertainment series for children—Spongebob Squarepants and Adventure Time—and how their portrayal reinforces or challenges gender stereotypes in cultural representations of science. The analysis revealed that science was portrayed as humorously framed non-science, often represented by exaggerated ever-computing datasets on larger-than-life computer screens that would rival NASA. However, the representation of the female scientists in these animated TV comedies was steeped in archaic stereotypes that, surprisingly, were barely associated with humor: it was the science, not the female scientist per se, that was comic. Interpreting these findings in light of science communication research, gender studies, popular entertainment studies and humor studies, this article adds new perspectives to our understanding of humor in science narratives and the public imagination, and provides new insights for the study of the intangible aspects of science in culture.

THE SUBTLETY OF COMIC REGISTER IN PERSUASIVE COMMUNICATION

: Humour is a discursive strategy with huge persuasive potential, which values the interlocutor. The use of comic register is not only proof of the communicator's intelligence, but also a form of interlocutor consideration, who is credited from the beginning with a sense of humour. Using comicality in persuasive communication is an option as tempting as it is risky, because not everyone tastes the same kind of humour. In this article we shall try to reveal the specifics of the comic register in discursive strategies and propose a humour typology, based on five relevant criteria: thematic, attitudinal, intentional, axiological and narrative, starting from the attributes that accompany the noun "humour" in various communication situations.

Men’s Language and Masculine Identity Construction in Sexist Jokes

&lt;em&gt;The power imbalance between men and women in society is reflected in their language use and it may be reinforced in sexist jokes. This is a sociolinguistic study on men’s language in sexist jokes on the Internet. This study is aimed at investigating men’s linguistic features and the masculine identities represented by those features. This is a descriptive qualitative study with complementary quantitative analysis. The theories of Tannen’s men language (1990) and Kiesling’s masculine identities (2007) were used as references to analyze the data. The results show that men’s identity of competing for solidarity embodied in discourses of insults, teasing, and joking is the most dominant identity represented in sexist jokes. This is in line with the main intention of sexist humor to laugh at women’s inferiority. Meanwhile, men’s dominance realized in report talk becomes the second most prevalent identity. The identities of politeness oaf, indicated by direct command, and freedom, shown by swearing and taboo words, are not influential as both do not contribute to the making of humorous expressions. These imply that context and communication purposes motivate speakers to use gender-related features. Reflecting that most of the masculine identities and the language features in sexist jokes represent men’s superiority, this kind of humor can be a way to maintain gender asymmetry in society. Besides, although humor leads to laughter and is considered healthy, sexist humor is dangerous as the expressions subordinate women. Therefore, being critical when reading the jokes and trying to avoid such jokes in communication is suggested.&lt;/em&gt;

WHAT CAN FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHERS LEARN FROM MULTIDISCIPLINARY HUMOUR RESEARCH

The aim of this article is to explore the advantages of the employment of humour in foreign language teaching for teachers and adult learners. How could teachers and learners in foreign language instruction benefit from improved humour awareness and developed humour competence? The paper reviews major definitions, theories, functions, and types of humour from multidisciplinary humour research, and examines the role of humour in foreign language instruction in view of important empirical findings and current requirements for foreign language speakers as stated in Common European Reference for Languages (2020). Conclusions suggest which kinds of humour should be incorporated into a contemporary foreign language classroom, and why. Further study recommendations are proposed that would allow for more effective applications of humour in modern adult foreign language education.

Uncover the Offensive Side of Disparagement Humor: An fMRI Study.

Disparagement humor is a kind of humor that denigrates, belittles an individual or a social group. In the aim to unveil the offensive side of these kinds of jokes, we have run an event-related fMRI study asking 30 healthy volunteers to judge the level of fun of a series of verbal stimuli that ended with a sentence that was socially inappropriate but funny (disparagement joke -DJ), socially inappropriate but not funny (SI) or neutral (N). Behavioral results showed disparagement jokes are perceived as funny and at the same time offensive. However, the level of offense in DJ is lower than that registered in SI stimuli. Functional data showed that DJ activated the insula, the SMA, the precuneus, the ACC, the dorsal striatum (the caudate nucleus), and the thalamus. These activations suggest that in DJ a feeling of mirth (and/or a desire to laugh) derived from the joke (e.g., SMA and precuneus) and the perception of the jokes’ social inappropriateness (e.g., ACC and insula) coexist. Furthermore, DJ and SI share a common network related to mentalizing and to the processing of negative feelings, namely the medial prefrontal cortex, the putamen and the right thalamus.

But how often do we consider the power of laughter or, more broadly, the role of humor in our teaching of medicine? When executed well, humor can increase learner engagement and participation, cultivate relationships, foster an effective learning environment, and increase satisfaction during teaching encounters.1,2 It may also calm students’ anxieties and result in a more approachable dynamic between learner and instructor.3 There is some, albeit weak, evidence that humor can lead to improved learning, particularly if that humor is directly relevant to the topic.2 There is also evidence that the prudent use of the right kind of humor can increase engagement and participation during university lectures.1 Overall, humor is identified as a key contributor to teaching effectiveness. This article continues the series by the Council on Medical Student Education in Pediatrics by exploring the role humor plays in medical education. Humor is defined as a funny or amusing quality, whereas a sense of humor is defined as the ability to be funny or to be amused by things that are funny. Despite the seemingly innocuous nature of humor, historically humor has generally received a bad reputation in professional settings.4 Humor can increase group cohesion, bring individuals together, and alleviate tension. On the other hand, it can disparage others, create misunderstandings, or foster isolation and division and thus hinder the learning environment. Humorous Audio-Visual Lockdown Works

This article is dedicated to humorous audio-visual lockdown works—that is, to short video clips with humorous content that were produced and circulated during the first Corona lockdown in spring 2020. The exploration of the video clips takes place within an autoethnographic approach. It will be examined what kind of humor was included in the videos I received in my WhatsApp bubble. By a rough division of recurring motifs, two exemplary analyses, and research results on humor from clinical psychology, I will describe the humor as complex coping humor. A further question relates to the functions the humorous audio-visual lockdown works were equipped with within the communication space of which I, myself, was a part of. Roger Odin’s semio-pragmatic approach serves as a starting point for first reflections on the functions which the audio-visual lockdown works were able to deploy. Against the background of Odin’s concept of reading modes and communication operators, the humorous audio-visual lockdown works will be conceptualized as relational experience operators. By utilizing social psychological approaches to the study of humor, the videos will furthermore be conceptualized as stress-buffer operators. The videos were used to unleash the communicative energy necessary for the production of a relational affirmation of a shared present, for mutual relief, and for a collective buffer against stress. Finally, I discuss that the humorous audio-visual lockdown works document the positive power of humor, community building, and care and, at the same time, reference a life that is characterized by specific privileges.

The paper focuses on discussions of partial linguistic competence and on sources of language knowledge among both Kalmyk language activists and the community of native speakers. Recent revivalist initiatives lead to the emergence of “new speakers” of minority languages whose language command is widely discussed within the community. The native speakers of a minority language may create some barriers for new speakers and evaluate their way of speaking as an inauthentic, “wrong” code. The paper deals with different sources of competence in Kalmyk: projects for teaching and learning Kalmyk, attempts to popularize it and the ethnic culture, and online communities for mothers who make the conscious decision to adopt native language practices with their children. These new sources of non-traditional knowledge are compared with other modes of language acquisition. The paper aims to analyze attitudes to a language by “new speakers”. From this point of view, the Kalmyk-speaking community displays ambiguous attitudes: there are negative attitudes toward the accents of new speakers, as well as toward the linguistic competence of the younger generation in a family. That said, there exist strongly positive evaluations of different activist initiatives, including treating the instances of mixed language as a kind of humor. The data shows that there is no strong demarcation between language acquisition in the family and other ways of learning Kalmyk.

"The Ambivalence of a Masterpiece: A Lost Letter by I.L. Caragiale. A Lost Letter by I.L. Caragiale, a landmark in the history of Romanian theatre, has enjoyed throughout time numerous critical interpretations, without losing its dramatic potential. We intend to study the comic mechanism through a variety of dramatic strategies: the diversity of the scenes, the circular actions, the baffling succession of situations, starting with the loss of the compromising love letter. This play features the actors of a political electoral farce overflowing with a vaudeville-like comic, that in conjunction with parody, is targeting the ideological clichés and verbal stereotypes. A logically inconceivable humour that borders the absurd. The purpose of this kind of humour, unleashed during comical situations, is not hiding the immorality, the demagogy of a socio-political reality put under the critical scope of the author. The joyful, bitter or cruel laughter are being in a continuous competition here. The humour is thus the element that subverts the values of political commitment. Keywords: I.L. Realization of Maxim Flouting to Create Humour in Incredibles 2

This study focuses on the analysis of humour creations based on the Grice’s cooperative maxim flouting. It applies descriptive qualitative study where we examined the utterances in Incredibles 2 were flouted to create humour. The results of the study showed that (1) There were 7 kinds of humour created from 19 flouting of quality maxims. (2) There were also 7 kinds of humour created from 45 flouting of quantity maxims. (3) There were only 9 kinds of humour created from 57 flouting of manner maxims. (4) On the flouting of relation maxims, all 11 humour categories were fulfilled from 59 flouting of relation maxims. Furthermore, it is suggested that through the occurance of maxim flouting in the movie especially animation genre which is addressed to the audience gives the knowledge about conversational implicatures. With regard to the creation of humour, it is suggested that the humour is not only a deviation of the cooperative principle and its maxims. Other theory of pragmatics can also be used to analyze the humour such as, politeness principle and also the acts of speech acts.

Who shows which kind of humor? Exploring sociodemographic differences in eight comic styles in a large Chilean sample

The present study investigates mean-level differences in eight comic styles (fun, benevolent humor, nonsense, wit, irony, satire, sarcasm, and cynicism) depending on the sociodemographic variables gender, age, education, political spectrum, and religious affiliation. A large and varied Chilean adult sample (N=1,272, 60.1% women; age M=39.94, SD=17.33) was recruited in face-to-face interviews and online testing. They completed self-reports of the comic styles (the Comic Style Markers) and sociodemographic variables. Overall, small, but meaningful, differences in comic styles were found for the different sociodemographic groups. Men scored higher than women in all comic styles except for benevolent humor, and six styles decreased with age. Having lower education was associated with more cynicism, while the reverse pattern was found for satire and wit. Religious people showed lower scores in four styles than non-religious people, and cynicism was higher in those identifying with left wing rather than right-wing attitudes. The present study thus provides insights into who is more likely to engage in different kinds of humor in their everyday lives.
