Short Bursts, Big Impact: Exploring Microlearning’s Potential in Malaysian Higher Education

The rapid transformation of Malaysian higher education, prompted by technological advancements and evolving job market demands, highlights the critical need for institutions to adopt microlearning approaches. These microlearning approaches align with the country's Education Blueprint 2015-2025, emphasising lifelong learning and the acquisition of industry-relevant skills. Developing credentials that are outcome-based, personalised, on-demand, secure, and transparent is crucial for ensuring education remains relevant and responsive to both learner and employer needs. This study employed a systematic literature review, adhering to PRISMA guidelines, to identify best practices in developing and implementing microlearning strategies within Malaysian higher education institutions. The review revealed that effective microlearning strategies are characterised by their ability to break down complex subjects into manageable chunks, combat cognitive overload, and enhance knowledge retention. This paper concludes that for Malaysian higher education to remain competitive and adaptable, a strategic emphasis on microlearning is imperative. These strategies not only cater to the dynamic needs of the job market but also align with the lifelong learning objectives outlined in the national education blueprint, thereby preparing graduates for successful careers in the 21st century.

PENGARUH SOFT SKILL DAN HARD SKILL MAHASISWA TERHADAP KESIAPAN KERJA DI ERA REVOLUSI INDUSTRI 4.0

This study explores the influence of soft skills and hard skills of students in the Building Engineering Education Program on job readiness in the era of the Industrial Revolution 4.0. In an increasingly competitive job market, technical abilities (hard skills) and interpersonal skills (soft skills) are keys to success. Hard skills encompass technical abilities acquired through formal education, while soft skills involve interpersonal abilities, communication, and time management. This research employs a quantitative approach with multiple linear regression analysis to measure the impact of both types of skills on students' job readiness. Data were collected through questionnaires from final semester students of the Building Engineering Education Program at Nias University. The analysis results indicate that both soft skills and hard skills positively and significantly influence students' job readiness. These findings underscore the importance of integrating soft skills and hard skills in preparing students to meet the demands of the digital era job market.

Assessment of an English and Business Computer Science program in bridging academia and job market in the Democratic Republic of Congo

This paper evaluates the impact of an English and Business Computer Science program in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the world’s second-largest French-speaking country after France. The program addresses the gap between academic training and market needs by combining English language proficiency with essential business and computer science skills. This combination aims to equip students for success in the business and technology sectors, where English is a key language. The paper details the program’s implementation, outcomes, and evaluation, using surveys of employers and graduates, along with an analysis of student competencies and employability. The findings underscore the importance of English proficiency, along with business and technological skills, in aligning educational outcomes with job market demands, thereby improving student success.

Development and validation of a secondary vocational school students’ digital learning competence scale

The rapid advancement of digital technology has not only affected the world of work but also students' learning. Digital learning competence (DLC) is one of the essential skills students need for effective learning in a digital environment. Despite the significant presence of secondary vocational school students in China, constituting one-third of the high school demographic, research on their digital learning needs remains sparse. Addressing this gap, this paper attempted to propose the elements and structural model of digital learning competence for secondary vocational school students (V-DLC). A corresponding questionnaire was compiled, and an analysis was carried out with 872 valid survey data of secondary vocational school students achieved by convenient sampling. A five-factor model for the V-DLC was established through exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses, cross-validity, and criterion validity tests. This paper suggests that evaluating students' digital learning competence in secondary vocational schools can be achieved by considering the dimensions of cognitive processing and reading, technology use, thinking skills, activity management, and will management, combined with students' learning experiences in school and other fields. Given the global focus on digital learning competence, this framework will pave the way for empirical research on digital learning and guide the enhancement of student learning ability in vocational settings, adapting to the digital era. Furthermore, transitioning to a digitalized vocational education system is essential for preparing students for a digitally-driven workforce, aligning with modern job market demands and global trends.

A need analysis of English proficiency in engineering graduates: perspectives of the world’s leading companies in Thailand

ABSTRACT This study examines the crucial role of English proficiency in engineering careers, specifically within multinational corporations, addressing disparities between industry expectations and graduates’ language skills in non-native English-speaking countries. It aims to bridge this gap by aligning engineering English courses with international job market demands. Focusing on leading Thai companies with global headquarters, the investigation employs various techniques, including interviews, the index of item-objective congruence, the analytic hierarchy process, the analysis of variance, the Wilcoxon signed-ranks test, and a matrix plot. The comprehensive gap analysis highlights verbal communication skills as highly valued by engineering firms, emphasising adjustments in English curricula towards listening and speaking skills, with reading and writing skills constituting a smaller portion. Cross-regional consistency in skill importance is confirmed, facilitating generalisable conclusions. The research underlines the necessity for universities to improve students’ abilities in technical conversations, presentations, and negotiations through tailored lesson plans aligned with industry requirements.

Evaluating the Special Education Professional Development Program Based on the Council of Exceptional Children’s Advanced Preparation Standards: A Mixed-Method Inquiry

A national call to promote the capability of the educational system to meet the development and job market demands initiated the development of the Special Education Higher Diploma Program (SEHDP) to create robust special education (SE) school programs. A concurrent explanatory mixed-method approach was employed. A web-based survey based on the Council of Exceptional Children (CEC)’s advanced preparation standards (2015) was sent to 561 Special Education Teachers (SETs) who were registered in the SEHDP. One hundred-and-fifty-six SETs responded to the survey (27%). Differences among participants’ responses based on gender, geographical region, educational qualifications, disability programs, and years of experience were examined. Furthermore, 10 interviews were held with SETs to explore their perspectives regarding the SEHDP strengths and challenges they encountered. Data were analyzed using descriptive and thematic analyses. The study found a consistently high rating of the seven CEC standards with an overall mean of 4.190. Statistically significant differences in terms of gender, educational qualifications, and years of experience were identified. SETs’ overall perspectives about the program were positive, indicating the program’s impact on the knowledge and skills they gained, which aligned with other studies, along with the program’s challenges and suggestions. Study limitations and implications for practice were included.

The study employs a mixed-methods approach, including surveys with educators, students, and employers, as well as interviews with industry experts. The findings reveal that online degree programs play a significant role in closing the skills gap and fulfilling job market demands in contemporary India. The curricula of these programs are highly relevant and aligned with industry needs, offering practical learning experiences that enhance students’ employability. Moreover, online education provides an inclusive, flexible, and cost-effective approach to education, enabling individuals from diverse backgrounds to access quality education. Overall, this research underscores the importance of online degree programs in preparing individuals for success in a rapidly changing and competitive global economy. By leveraging the full potential of online education, we can create a workforce that is well-equipped to meet current industry needs and adapt to the challenges of the future.

Transformative, Transdisciplinary, Transcendent Digital Education: Synergy, Sustainability and Calamity

Dynamic transformation of the knowledge economy, enhanced by Industry 4.0/5.0 development and rise of the networked society in the Digital Age, emergency digitization of all social communicative spheres due to pandemic measures have imposed dramatic changes onto transdisciplinary overlap in different areas of human knowledge and experience, induced by the cross-sectorial job market demands of university level education, curriculum design and learning outcomes. The global pandemic and subsequent warfare in Ukraine induced amplified digitalization measures in the higher education sphere. This end-to end digital shift in the educational processes (communication, content, outcomes and outputs, skills) heralded the introduction of meta-disciplinary dimensions of learning – digital, hybrid and, blended. These meta-disciplinary dimensions can be considered conduits of vertical (endocentric) and horizontal (exocentric) transdisciplinary of digital education as a sustainable dynamic system. Applied trans-disciplinary lens contributes to the solution of holistic modeling of processes and results of updating models and mechanisms of the highly dynamic communication system of education in the digital environment as a whole and its individual formats in the emergency digitization measures of different types.

This article presents a study on intrapreneurial skills and their influence on the employability of engineers. These skills are highlighted as a strategic differentiator, both for professionals and for the companies that employ them. The research shows the importance of the constant evolution of intrapreneurial skills and abilities on the part of engineers, to stay up to date with new technologies and job market demands, thus increasing their chances of success in the market. Furthermore, the presence of intrapreneurial professionals in companies not only boosts competitiveness in the market, but also contributes significantly to the organization's success in the face of competition.

Competency-based curriculum has become the main focus in efforts to improve the quality of education. This approach emphasizes the development of skills, knowledge and attitudes that are relevant to real world needs. By adapting learning to student needs and job market demands, competency-based curricula can help improve the quality of education and prepare students for future challenges. The aim of this research is to identify the role of competency-based curriculum in improving the quality of education in secondary education institutions. The research method used is descriptive research, with library research or literature study. The data sources taken are books, research journals or scientific journals that discuss competency-based curricula. Data collection was carried out through literature searches using basic data. The data collected can be analyzed to find findings or themes and patterns according to the focus of the discussion. The competency-based curriculum is a curriculum that has the potential to improve the quality of education in Indonesia. With KBK students are encouraged to learn with their personal competencies which are used as a whole in achieving learning goals or educational goals.

Anticipating Job Market Demands—A Deep Learning Approach to Determining the Future Readiness of Professional Skills

Anticipating the demand for professional job market skills needs to consider trends such as automation, offshoring, and the emerging Gig economy, as they significantly impact the future readiness of skills. This article draws on the scientific literature, expert assessments, and deep learning to estimate two indicators of high relevance for a skill’s future readiness: its automatability and offshorability. Based on gold standard data, we evaluate the performance of Support Vector Machines (SVMs), Transformers, Large Language Models (LLMs), and a deep learning ensemble classifier for propagating expert and literature assessments on these indicators of yet unseen skills. The presented approach uses short bipartite skill labels that contain a skill topic (e.g., “Java”) and a corresponding verb (e.g., “programming”) to describe the skill. Classifiers thus need to base their judgments solely on these two input terms. Comprehensive experiments on skewed and balanced datasets show that, in this low-token setting, classifiers benefit from pre-training and fine-tuning and that increased classifier complexity does not yield further improvements.

Implementation of the On-the-Job Training Learning Program for Students Majoring in Hospitality Accommodation

Purpose of the study: This research aims to determine the implementation of the on-the-job training learning program for students majoring in hotel accommodation at Vocational High School 4 Jambi City.
 Methodology: This research uses a qualitative approach with a naturalistic approach. The population and sample in this study were students from Vocational High School 4 Jambi City. The data collection techniques in this research used documentation and interviews.
 Main Findings: From the results of research regarding the implementation of the On The Job Training learning program for students majoring in Hospitality Accommodation at Vocational High School 4 Jambi City, it can be concluded that this program has a significant positive impact on students' preparation to enter the world of work. The implementation succeeded in increasing students' practical understanding of work processes in the hotel industry, as well as helping students develop skills and knowledge that are relevant to job market demands.
 Novelty/Originality of this study: The novelty of this research lies in its specific focus on the implementation of on-the-job learning programs in the Hospitality Accommodation department, which is an important field in the hotel industry. This research will reveal how on the job programs are implemented in vocational education, identify challenges that may be faced, and evaluate effectiveness in preparing students to enter the world of work. It is hoped that this research will provide valuable insights for schools, industry and education policy to improve the relevance and quality of education in the future.

Impact of a Competency Training Course, on the Job Profile of Veterinary Medicine Graduates in Northeastern Brazil.

The present study identified professional training aspects in veterinary medicine at a federal public university in the Northeast of Brazil based on the graduates perception. The outcome of this study is anticipated to facilitate updating of pedagogical project execution of the courses in related areas to improve their curriculum. Hence, the course coordination started monitoring the graduates using an online questionnaire on the course webpage. The form consisted of questions about the graduate's sociodemographic information; academic training; professional performance; evaluation about the humanistic and technical skills; expertise and knowledge areas; job market perception; and curriculum evaluation. This survey was performed following the ethical criteria. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test (p < .05). Graduates work mainly in the Northeast region of the country, and are employed less than a year after graduation. Moreover, they are working in their training area with a compatible salary. They recognized the generalist profile of their training. They also believed that the course promotes articulation between teaching, and research and extension, as well as consider the discipline contents more theoretical than practical. Upon completing the course, 41% of the graduates felt prepared for the job market, especially in the area of animal health. The results obtained allowed us to understand the socioeconomic, demographic, and professional profiles of the trained professionals. Therefore, monitoring the trajectory of graduates can support decisions about the didactic-pedagogical adjustments aimed at promoting the quality of professional training, thereby meeting the job market demands.

GOVERNMENT INVESTMENT FOR ADDRESSING THE INTERSECTION OF EDUCATION, LABOR MARKET MISMATCH, AND CRIMINAL BEHAVIOR: ANTICIPATED OUTCOMES AND IMPLICATIONS

Several expected results from government expenditure, education, and labour market regulations are revealed when one examines the complex interaction between education, labour market mismatch, and criminal behaviour. Government spending on education is projected to increase graduation rates and student performance, among other observable advantages. The likelihood of a mismatch between job capabilities and market demand may be decreased as a result of a more trained workforce. Investments in employment agencies and job placement services may also help job seekers find positions that fit their qualifications, enhancing job satisfaction and lowering instances of labour market mismatch. Additionally, government initiatives to lessen income disparity through progressive taxation and social safety nets may improve economic stability, so averting the economic unrest that is frequently associated with criminal activity. Initiatives for preventing crime, such as counselling, assistance with finding a job, and skill-building programmes, may provide those who may otherwise turn to crime out of job dissatisfaction an alternative route to success and a decrease in criminal activity. Investments in mental health services and addiction treatment programmes are anticipated to enhance mental health and decrease substance misuse, two factors linked to criminal behaviour. By providing prisoners with the knowledge and skills they need for successful work after release, education programmes within correctional facilities are expected to lessen recidivism rates. Last but not least, government-funded research initiatives may give light on the viability of various strategies, providing a foundation for evidence-based policies that concentrate on tackling the complex problems at the confluence of education, labour markets, and criminal behaviour. Although these anticipated results present a bright image, it is important to recognize that outcomes may differ depending on implementation strategies, local socioeconomic situations, and community demographics. To effectively handle the numerous difficulties within this sector, ongoing assessment and policy improvement are essential.

Topic mining for theses and job ads in ICT sector: can higher education institutes respond to job market demands?

IntroductionThis study aims to tackle the challenge of ensuring higher education students are equipped with high-demand skills for today’s job market. The focus is on aligning the knowledge acquired during their studies, as represented by final-year thesis projects, with the skills and topics specified in actual job advertisements.MethodsWe developed a computational framework that uses automated subject indexing to extract representative skills and topics from two major datasets: thesis abstracts from Information and Communication Technology (ICT) programmes of Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences, and ICT-related job ads from a top Finnish job portal. Our dataset spans 12 years, comprising 18,254 theses and 107,335 ads. The framework includes a subject indexing model for keyword extraction, dimension reduction techniques for data simplification, clustering algorithms to group similar items, and correlation analysis to compare similarities and differences between the two datasets.ResultsThe analysis uncovered both similarities and differences between thesis topics and trends in job ads. It highlighted areas where education aligns with industry demands but also pointed out existing gaps.DiscussionOur framework not only helps to align the education provided with industry demands but also ensures that higher education institutes can stay up-to-date with the latest skills and knowledge in the field, thereby better equipping students for success in their careers. While the framework was applied to the ICT sector in this instance, its design allows expansion into other fields offering a data-informed approach for continuous development of teaching curricula and methodologies.

Trends in Admittance and Equity in Higher Education: Are Male Students in Uganda Disadvantaged?

The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of trends in admittance and equity in higher education. Using Qualitative approach in data collection, this study answered the following questions: Are Male students currently disadvantaged in admittance to higher education in favour of female students? What is the impact this imbalance in relation to job market demands for skilled labour from both sexes? What long-term initiatives might significantly increase the number of male students admitted to higher education institutions for gender equity? The findings were that the available data on trends in admitting students in higher institutions show an almost equal number of the ratio of females to male with some exceptional institutions where female ratios have exceeded male ratios. It is recommended that the government should review affirmative action policies so that the recruitment does not favor one gender as it were before the programs.

Bridging gaps: Transforming dental public health training for modern job market demands.

To create optimal oral and overall community health, dental public health (DPH) specialists must be competent and appropriately skilled to deal with contemporary and emergent public health issues. This study aims to evaluate the current job market demands related to the DPH profession and suggest contemporary skills and qualities that would enable DPH professionals to address emerging issues more effectively in their field. A multimethod qualitative study was conducted involving two distinct groups: employers and potential employees. Interviews of stakeholders (employers)representing different job market domains, and a surveywas administered to recent DPH residency graduates (employees). Qualitative analysis was applied to the data collected. Employers identified the following skills as crucial for future DPH employees: proficiency in care delivery systems, health informatics, clinical training, leadership, and professional and grant writing skills. Many employers assumed the presence of a clinical component in the residency program. DPH residency graduates emphasized that the most significant barrier to securing positions is the lack of clinical experience within the residency program. This research highlights skills currently valued by the DPH job market and proposes that DPH specialty training may consider revising its curriculum to include these skills. Implementing such updates would ensure that graduates are well equipped and competitive, thus significantly contributing to the broader objective of attaining optimal oral health and overall well-being of the community.

Analysis of Post Crisis Accounting Profession Readiness

The post-crisis pandemic outbreak has changed the order of life. In this new post-crisis era, various challenges have emerged, including the accounting profession. This study aims to find out the standard of skills needed to engage in the accounting profession under the new normal. The standard is in line with the job market demand data for beginners in the accounting profession disclosed on the Jobstreet job vacancy site. The population and sample of this study were 151 job vacancies, including the categories of "audit and taxation", "banking or finance"; "Finance or Investment", and "General Accounting or Finance". The results of this study found 17 levels of people's proficiency, namely: (1) having work experience; (2) having Certificate A and B; (3) knowing tax laws and regulations; (4) being able to operate computer programs; (5) having communication skills; (6) being proficient in foreign languages; (7) having an independent attitude; (8) having high initiative; (9) having a disciplined attitude; (10) teamwork/organizational skills; (11) willingness to work overtime; (12) wise and meticulous attitude; (13) honest attitude; (14) responsible attitude; (15) accounting skills; (16) analytical skills; (17) written and report skills. It is hoped that the results of the study can be a reference for prospective workers to prepare themselves to enter the accounting industry

Sustainable employment for vocational education and training graduates: the case of future skills matching in Bangladesh

ABSTRACT Bangladesh is characterized by a high demand for skilled workers. Hence, the significance of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) becomes crucial to address the existing skill gaps to stimulate economic development. This research addresses the major challenges that hinder the progress of TVET in Bangladesh. This study adopts a mixed-method approach to investigate thoroughly the fundamental aspects of TVET’s capacity to provide high-quality skills development programs with an aim to increase its graduates’ employability. This study finds that individuals, upon their graduation from TVET institutions, face significant obstacles in the job market. These challenges, as the research finds, arise primarily due to discrepancies between graduates’ skills and job market demands. This study also examines the local TVET issues in Bangladesh, offers valuable insights and policy recommendations to address skill deficits, ensure sustainable employment for TVET graduates, and enhance economic development in developing nations..

Competitive capabilities of higher education institutions from their Employees' perspectives: A case study of King Khalid University.

This study aimed to uncover the competitive advantages of King Khalid University (KKU) as a higher educational institution and identify the strategies needed to strengthen its competitive stance through a qualitative case study approach. Data were collected via detailed interviews with 30 university staff, comprising 19 faculty members and 11 academic leaders. Following this, the data were qualitatively analyzed using MAXQDA 2022 software. The results showed that KKU has 30 sub-competitive strengths, including work ethics, future vision, academic excellence, creativity, teamwork, respect for intellectual property, continuous customer-focused improvement, a positive workplace environment, organizational trust, and the ability to attract international students. Additionally, the study identified 8 challenges hindering KKU's advancement in global university rankings, spanning academic, human, and administrative areas. To improve its standing in international rankings, thematic analysis revealed 11 strategies to enhance KKU's competitiveness. These include aligning academic programs with job market demands, enhancing research facilities, boosting funding for academic and research endeavors, fostering international academic and scientific partnerships, and upgrading the technological infrastructure for academics and administration. The analysis underscores the need for KKU to adopt a comprehensive suite of academic, human, and administrative strategies to bolster its competitive position. This is crucial for KKU's rise in global university rankings and its alignment with the National Vision 2030, aiming to place over five Saudi universities among the top 100 or 200 globally.
