Development Of a Jealousy Scale in Romantic Relationship: A Validity and Reliability Scale

The article presents the development and validation of a new measurement tool, the scale of Jealousy in romantic relationship (JRRS), designed to assess romantic jealousy in individuals aged 18 and above with or without a romantic relationship. The scale was developed through a literature review and tailored to the Turkish culture. The exploratory factor analysis revealed a three-dimensional structure, with the first dimension explaining 32.94% of the total variance, the second dimension explaining 11.34%, and the third dimension explaining 9.21%. The total variance explained by all three dimensions was 53.50%. The moderate correlation between the Anxious Attachment subdimension of the Experiences in Close Relationships Scale-Short Form (ECRS-SF) and the JRRS provided evidence of criterion-related validity, consistent with previous findings in the literature. As a result of the reliability analysis, the reliability value of the measurement tool was found to be .85 according to the Cronbach alpha. According to the sub-dimensions, reliability results were obtained as .83 for the social environment and past relationships factor, .83 for the jealousy perception factor and .71 for the perception of the waist factor. The JRRS was compared to other established scales measuring jealousy in romantic relationships, and the results further supported its reliability and validity. Overall, the study showed that the JRRS is a valid and reliable tool for assessing romantic jealousy in individuals.

Adult Attachment and Personality as Predictors of Jealousy in Romantic Relationships.

Functional relationships between romantic jealousy and traits, such as neuroticism or adult attachment styles, are well-known. For the first time, we conducted a joint analysis of the Big Five traits and attachment dimensions as predictors of jealousy, which considered gender differences as well as differences in infidelity experiences and relationship status. In 847 participants, path modeling showed that higher neuroticism, lower agreeableness, and lower openness predicted higher romantic jealousy. The attachment dimensions “anxiety” and “depend” partly mediated the effect of neuroticism and fully mediated the effect of agreeableness on romantic jealousy. The direct and indirect relationships did not differ as a function of gender, relationship status, and infidelity experiences. These findings contribute to a better understanding of individual differences in romantic jealousy from a personality perspective.

Predicting Facebook jealousy in romantic relationships: Further support for attachment style and trust

Previous research has explored the role of individual differences in romantic jealousy. Research suggests that attachment styles predict romantic jealousy, with anxiously attached individuals experiencing high levels of romantic jealousy, whereas avoidant individuals experience less romantic jealousy. The aim of this study was to conceptually replicate these findings by exploring the role of attachment styles/relationship quality and Facebook jealousy. In a sample of participants in heterosexual romantic relationships (n = 124), we found that attachment anxiety was a positive predictor of Facebook jealousy. Furthermore, we find that trust and attachment avoidance negatively predicted Facebook jealousy, in that low trust and low attachment avoidance were associated with higher Facebook jealousy, thus replicating previous research by applying previous research on romantic jealousy to an online context, Facebook jealousy. The findings of this study add to the literature by 1) conceptual replication, and 2) extending previous literature by providing further support of the role of attachment styles and trust in Facebook jealousy.

Jealousy in women with migraine: a cross-sectional case-control study

BackgroundEstrogen influences susceptibility to migraine attacks and it has been suggested to affect jealousy in romantic relationships in women. Therefore, we hypothesized that migraine women may be more jealous.MethodsJealousy levels and hormonal status were determined based on a cross-sectional, web-based, questionnaire study among female migraine patients and controls. A random sample of participants was selected from a validated migraine database. Participants with a serious and intimate monogamous relationship were included (n = 498) and divided into the following subgroups: menstrual migraine (n = 167), non-menstrual migraine (n = 103), postmenopausal migraine (n = 117), and premenopausal (n = 57) and postmenopausal (n = 54) controls. The primary outcome was the difference in mean jealousy levels between patients with menstrual migraine, non-menstrual migraine and premenopausal controls. Results were analyzed with a generalized linear model adjusting for age, relationship duration and hormonal status (including oral contraceptive use). Additionally, the difference in jealousy levels between postmenopausal migraine patients and controls was assessed. Previous research was replicated by evaluating the effect of combined oral contraceptives on jealousy.ResultsJealousy levels were higher in menstrual migraine patients compared to controls (mean difference ± SE: 3.87 ± 1.09, p = 0.001), and non-menstrual migraine patients compared to controls (4.98 ± 1.18, p < 0.001). No difference in jealousy was found between postmenopausal migraine patients and controls (− 0.32 ± 1.24, p = 0.798). Women using combined oral contraceptives were more jealous compared to non-users with a regular menstrual cycle (2.32 ± 1.03, p = 0.025).ConclusionYoung women with migraine are more jealous within a romantic partnership.

The green‐eyed monster: Mate value, relational uncertainty, and jealousy in romantic relationships

AbstractThis study drew on theories of evolutionary psychology to explore whether mate value discrepancy (MVD) would be associated with relational uncertainty (and its subconstructs) and if relative mate value (RMV) would moderate these associations, such that they would only be significant for lower value mates. Additionally, this article sought to examine whether relational uncertainty would partially mediate an association between MVD and jealousy, also moderated by RMV. Participants recruited from a large Southwestern university (N = 334) completed a survey containing measures to establish MVD, relational uncertainty, and jealousy. MVD was significantly positively associated with relational uncertainty and each of its subconstructs. Relational uncertainty partially mediated the association between MVD and jealousy, although moderation was not supported in any hypotheses.

There are no useful scales that assess romantic jealousy multidimensionally in Japanese, and also, many issues that need improvement can be noted in representative jealousy scales such as the Multidimensional Jealousy Scale by Pfeiffer & Wong (1989). This study was conducted to develop the Multidimensional Scale of Jealousy in Romantic Relationships to assess components of romantic jealousy referred to in previous studies and to make some improvements. Three components of romantic jealousy were hypothesized: suspicious cognition, exclusive emotion, and cautious behavior. The results from 234 undergraduates showed three factors indicated by exploratory/confirmatory factor analysis and high internal consistency. The results also showed concurrent validity with the “Mania love style” and construct validity with scales measuring fear of abandonment, reassurance-seeking, and intimacy.

Impact of sexual coercion on romantic experiences of adolescents and young adults.

Little is known about the effect of sexual coercion on romantic relationship quality and dating experiences. The current study aimed to address this dearth in the literature and test the hypothesis that sexual coercion has a negative impact on victims' subsequent romantic experiences. Using a sample of 94 youth (44 males and 50 females), the current study addressed the impact of sexual coercion on romantic relationship quality and dating experiences. Tracking youth for 8.5years (M age at Wave 1=15.10years, SD=.49), the current study used piecewise growth curve modeling to account for shifts in the intercept and slope of romantic experiences following sexual coercion. Negative interactions immediately increased following coercion and continued to have an accelerated rate of growth (i.e., a slope change). Jealousy in romantic relationships increased in slope. Serious dating decelerated following the coercive incident. Results were largely consistent across gender and severity of the coercive incident. Contrary to hypotheses, relational support, relationship satisfaction, and casual dating did not significantly change following sexual coercion. Consistent with hypotheses, sexual coercion had a negative impact on romantic experiences. These findings have clinical implications for both prevention and intervention around sexual violence. In addition, the consistency of findings across gender and severity suggests that increased focus should be directed toward both male sexual coercion and less severe sexual coercion.

Unequal Treatment by Mothers and Fathers Matters Differently for Daughters and Sons

Research in attachment has yet to examine the differential effects of unequal treatment by mothers versus unequal treatment by fathers and how unequal treatment affects daughters and sons differently. Moreover, research examining the link between differential treatment and relationship outcomes such as jealousy in romantic relationship has suggested that romantic attachment may mediate this process but has not effectively examined this association. In the current study, researchers found that for daughters, unequal control (but not affection) by mothers (but not fathers) predicted jealousy. For sons, unequal affection (but not control) by mothers (but not fathers) predicted jealousy. For sons, attachment mediated the relationship between differential maternal affection and jealousy in romantic relationships.

Evaluation of Romantic Jealousy: Psychometric Study of the Multidimensional Jealousy Scale for the Portuguese Population

Aim: The presence of jealousy in romantic relationships is a timeless reality, but it is underexplored. Pfeiffer and Wong (1989) propose a view of jealousy as a multidimensional construct, compounding cognitive, emotional and behavioural domains. The authors created the Multidimensional Jealousy Scale. This research aimed at adapting and validating the scale for the Portuguese population. Method: 1169 participants took part in the study, 474 male and 695 female, over 18 years. Together with the Multidimensional Jealousy Scale a socio-demographic questionnaire was applied, in order to characterize the study’s participants. Results: The Cronbach's alpha values registered were 0.87 regarding emotional jealousy; 0.92 for cognitive jealousy; and 0.90 concerning behavioural jealousy. The Cronbach's alpha for the total scale (Portuguese version) was 0.86. Conclusion: The scale showed good psychometric characteristics, with a factorial structure composed of three factors.

Meta-Analyses of Sex Differences in Responses to Sexual Versus Emotional Infidelity

From 54 articles, 172 effect sizes were meta-analyzed to determine whether men and women are differentially distressed by emotional versus sexual infidelity. Predictions were derived and tested from an evolutionary psychology (EP) perspective, a social–cognitive perspective, and the double-shot perspective. The data were not consistent with the EP predictions because men tended to respond in the predicted manner in only the U.S. student samples, whereas the rest of the data were largely consistent with the social–cognitive theory. Specifically, both sexes tended to be more upset by emotional than sexual infidelity when forced to choose which type of infidelity was more distressing. Both sexes indicated that sexual infidelity was more distressing than emotional when asked to rate their level of distress separately for each using continuous measures. The lesbian and gay samples were mostly consistent with the double-shot hypothesis because they tended to respond based on stereotyping grounded in the sex of their partner, paralleling heterosexuals in this regard. Analysis of the scenarios designed to test the double-shot hypothesis found somewhat smaller effects when the possibility of both types of infidelity was ruled out. These findings suggest that professionals seeking to address problems associated with jealousy in romantic relationships would profit from avoiding sex-linked assumptions about which aspect of infidelity is likely to be more upsetting.

Time to Face It! Facebook Intrusion and the Implications for Romantic Jealousy and Relationship Satisfaction

Young people's exposure to social network sites such as Facebook is increasing, along with the potential for such use to complicate romantic relationships. Yet, little is known about the overlaps between the online and offline worlds. We extended previous research by investigating the links between Facebook intrusion, jealousy in romantic relationships, and relationship outcomes in a sample of undergraduates currently in a romantic relationship. A Facebook Intrusion Questionnaire was developed based on key features of technological (behavioral) addictions. An eight-item Facebook Intrusion Questionnaire with a single-factor structure was supported; internal consistency was high. Facebook intrusion was linked to relationship dissatisfaction, via jealous cognitions and surveillance behaviors. The results highlight the possibility of high levels of Facebook intrusion spilling over into romantic relationships, resulting in problems such as jealousy and dissatisfaction. The results have implications for romantic relationships and for Facebook users in general.

More Information than You Ever Wanted: Does Facebook Bring Out the Green-Eyed Monster of Jealousy?

The social network site Facebook is a rapidly expanding phenomenon that is changing the nature of social relationships. Anecdotal evidence, including information described in the popular media, suggests that Facebook may be responsible for creating jealousy and suspicion in romantic relationships. The objectives of the present study were to explore the role of Facebook in the experience of jealousy and to determine if increased Facebook exposure predicts jealousy above and beyond personal and relationship factors. Three hundred eight undergraduate students completed an online survey that assessed demographic and personality factors and explored respondents' Facebook use. A hierarchical multiple regression analysis, controlling for individual, personality, and relationship factors, revealed that increased Facebook use significantly predicts Facebook-related jealousy. We argue that this effect may be the result of a feedback loop whereby using Facebook exposes people to often ambiguous information about their partner that they may not otherwise have access to and that this new information incites further Facebook use. Our study provides evidence of Facebook's unique contributions to the experience of jealousy in romantic relationships.

Mate Value Discrepancy as Predictor of Forgiveness and Jealousy in Romantic Relationships

Mate value discrepancy (MVD), the perceived difference in resource value between self and partner in romantic relationships, may impact both forgiveness and jealousy. One hundred seventy-nine participants rated their own and their partner's mate value, and self-reported forgiveness and jealousy. MVD was associated with forgiveness in romantic relationships in that the higher the value of one's mate in relation to self, the more likely an individual would forgive that partner's transgression. Similarly, MVD played a role with jealousy in that the higher the value of the partner, the more likely an individual experienced jealousy. Additionally, individuals were more likely to forgive transgressions when their partners had higher mate values than theirs, even when jealousy is experienced.

The role of relationship development and attachment in the experience of romantic jealousy

AbstractWe argue that a relationship development perspective is useful for understanding the experience of jealousy in romantic relationships In particular, we highlight relational uncertainty and intimacy as two indicators of relationship development that are likely to coincide with people's propensity to experience cognitive and emotional jealousy. Because recent theoretical insights about jealousy have stemmed from an attachment perspective, we also examined the extent to which people's attachment orientation predicted their experience of jealousy. We conducted a study in which 132 individuals involved in dating relationships reported on characteristics of themselves and their relationships. Consistent with our predictions, relational uncertainty was strongly tied to cognitive jealousy, and intimacy was closely linked to emotional jealousy. Also as expected, attachment anxiety exerted a direct positive effect on emotional jealousy. Taken together, these results shed light on how the experience of jealousy is associated with both relationship and individual characteristics.

An Item Response Theory for Personality and Attitude Scales: Item Analysis Using Restricted Factor Analysis

This paper describes the applicability of item re sponse theory to attitude scale development and pro vides an illustration derived from a study of the pro pensity toward jealousy in romantic relationships. The item analysis model used is identical to the factor analysis model, so factor analytic criteria are used to evaluate the scale. These criteria may be used to de cide whether the scale may be scored as a measure of a single variable and whether a simple sum or a weighted sum of the item responses serves as an opti mal test score. Estimates of the reliability of the scale based on the item response model are also described.
