Wearable Sensors for Evaluation Over Smart Home Using Sequential Minimization Optimization-based Random Forest

In our everyday life records, human activity identification utilizing MotionNode sensors is becoming more and more prominent. A difficult issue in ubiquitous computing and HCI is providing reliable data on human actions and behaviors. In this study, we put forward a practical methodology for incorporating statistical data into Sequential Minimization Optimization-based random forests. In order to extract useful features, we first prepared a 1-Dimensional Hadamard transform wavelet and a 1-Dimensional Local Binary Pattern-dependent extraction technique. Over two benchmark datasets, the University of Southern California-Human Activities Dataset, and the IM-Sporting Behaviors datasets, we employed sequential minimum optimization together with Random Forest to classify activities. Experimental findings demonstrate that our suggested model may successfully be utilized to identify strong human actions for matters related to efficiency and accuracy, and may challenge with existing cutting-edge approaches.

Security Issues in Ubiquitous Computing: A Literature Review

Ubiquitous computing is a concept where computing is made to appear everywhere using any device, in an in any location and in any format. In this paper we have discussed the properties and applications of Ubiquitous Computing. We have also discussed some of the security challenges for Ubiquitous Computing and various security attacks on Ubiquitous Computing Networks.

Cost-Sensitive Semi-Supervised Personalized Semantic Place Label Recognition Using Multi-Context Data

Personalized semantic place label recognition is a promising research issue in ubiquitous computing. However, there are some problems existed in the current methods: 1) They use trajectory data to learn recognition model and ignore other context data that could reflect human behaviors over places. 2) They tend to maximize accuracy and ignore the imbalanced costs caused by the similarity between semantic place labels. 3) They use supervised learning, which cannot achieve a good performance when the number of labeled places is limited. In this paper, we exploit multi-context data to construct effective features and propose a method called CEMENT (Cost-sensitive sEmi-supervised personalized seMantic place labEl recogNiTion). On one hand, CEMENT is cost-sensitive, and it calculates misclassification costs according to the semantic similarity between place labels. On the other hand, CEMENT utilizes ensemble semi-supervised learning to leverage the unlabeled data to improve the performance. Experimental results show that the proposed method has superiority over state-of-the-art methods.

A toolbox for managing organisational issues in the early stage of the development of a ubiquitous computing application

In this paper, we present a toolbox for the prospective management of organisational issues in ubiquitous computing. Ubiquitous computing applications are developed to enable new services and new ways of working, to increase management control and to improve safety. However, they may also interfere with established practices and may have unforeseen consequences for organisations. Despite their importance, such organisational issues are rarely addressed in ubiquitous computing innovation projects. Drawing on socio-technical design approaches and existing research on organisational issues in ubiquitous computing, we have developed a toolbox containing three tools for managing organisational issues of ubiquitous computing applications in the early stage of development. The toolbox supports the realisation of hoped-for benefits of ubiquitous computing in organisations and the management of unwanted organisational issues. The work process tool supports the description of envisioned processes, including flexibility and variability requirements, changing responsibilities and different points of view. The work system tool analyses the alignment between a ubiquitous computing application and systems task completeness, independency and the fit between regulation opportunities and requirements. The human controllability tool assesses how the control capabilities of workers are enabled or constrained by the new ubiquitous computing application. We show the applicability of the toolbox using a case study of an early stage ubiquitous computing technology innovation project, where the toolbox contributed to the set-up of the field trial and the development of application guidelines.

Quantizing Personal Privacy in Ubiquitous Computing

Privacy is one of the most important and difficult research issues in ubiquitous computing. It is qualitative rather than quantitative. Privacy preserving mainly relies on policy based rules of the system, and users cannot adjust their privacy disclosure rules dynamically based on their wishes. To make users understand and control their privacy measurement, we present a scheme to quantize the personal privacy. We aim to configure the person’s privacy based on the numerical privacy level which can be dynamically adjusted. Instead of using the traditional simple rule engine, we implement this scheme in a complex way. In addition, we design the scenario to explain the implementation of our scheme. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to assess personal privacy numerically to achieve precision privacy computing. The privacy measurement and disclosure model will be refined in the future work.

Energy and touch-information for body-worn ubiquitous computing

Addressing a key issue in ubiquitous computing and power generation, this paper presents several novel techniques that use the human body itself as an energy resource for power generation and as a biological data network. Particularly focusing on power from human walking, we conducted comprehensive studies determining and comparing critical factors such as efficiencies and power generation levels generated for real generation techniques. Additionally, we present a breakthrough development of low-cost miniature circuits with significantly improved efficiencies ideal for such generation application. This paper also describes novel systems of ubiquitous personal area networks that exchange digital information by physical touch.

An Object-oriented Design and Push Web Server based Framework for Physical Object Interactions and Services

One of the substantial issues in ubiquitous computing is the automatic processing of information from real world objects and enabling their interactions in the background. This scenario requires a framework on which such information processing and object interaction can be supported. This article presents our research progress in developing a framework based on the object-oriented design approach and the use of a push web server. With the concept of object abstraction, an object can hide its internal structure from the outside world, which can make the object secure. Moreover, object interaction can be conducted via message exchanges, which makes the interface simple and standardized and the heterogeneous objects can be easily handled as well. Instead of using the traditional pull web server, a push web server, i.e., Comet, which runs on top of HTTP protocol is used to exchange messages. To this, object interactions can be operated smoothly and seamlessly in real time with shorter delay.

The quest for personal control over mobile location privacy

How to protect location privacy of mobile users is an important issue in ubiquitous computing. However, location privacy protection is particularly challenging: on one hand, the administration requires all legitimate users to provide identity information in order to grant them permission to use its wireless service; on the other hand, mobile users would prefer not to expose any information that could enable anyone, including the administration, to get some clue regarding their whereabouts; mobile users would like to have complete personal control of their location privacy. To address this issue, we propose an authorized-anonymous-ID-based scheme; this scheme effectively eliminates the need for a trusted server or administration, which is assumed in the previous work. Our key weapon is a cryptographic technique called blind signature, which is used to generate an authorized anonymous ID that replaces the real ID of an authorized mobile device. With authorized anonymous IDs, we design an architecture capable of achieving complete personal control over location privacy while maintaining the authentication function required by the administration.
