Formation of Inorganic Sulfate and Volatile Nonsulfated Products from Heterogeneous Hydroxyl Radical Oxidation of 2-Methyltetrol Sulfate Aerosols: Mechanisms and Atmospheric Implications.

Chemical transformation of 2-methyltetrol sulfates (2-MTS), key isoprene-derived secondary organic aerosol (SOA) constituents, through heterogeneous hydroxyl radical (•OH) oxidation can result in the formation of previously unidentified atmospheric organosulfates (OSs). However, detected OSs cannot fully account for the sulfur content released from reacted 2-MTS, indicating the existence of sulfur in forms other than OSs such as inorganic sulfates. This work investigated the formation of inorganic sulfates through heterogeneous •OH oxidation of 2-MTS aerosols. Remarkably, high yields of inorganic sulfates, defined as the moles of inorganic sulfates produced per mole of reacted 2-MTS, were observed in the range from 0.48 ± 0.07 to 0.68 ± 0.07. These could be explained by the production of sulfate (SO4 •-) and sulfite (SO3 •-) radicals through the cleavage of C-O(S) and (C)O-S bonds, followed by aerosol-phase reactions. Additionally, nonsulfated products resulting from bond cleavage were likely volatile and evaporated into the gas phase, as evidenced by the observed aerosol mass loss (≤25%) and concurrent size reduction upon oxidation. This investigation highlights the significant transformation of sulfur from its organic to inorganic forms during the heterogeneous oxidation of 2-MTS aerosols, potentially influencing the physicochemical properties and environmental impacts of isoprene-derived SOAs.

New formation and fate of Isoprene SOA markers revealed by field data-constrained modeling

Particulate 2-methyltetrols (2-MT) and 2-methylglyceric acid (2-MG) are typically used to indicate the abundance of isoprene-derived secondary organic aerosols (SOA). However, their formation and fate are not fully understood. In this study, we showed that particulate 2-MT and 2-MG collected at multiple monitoring sites under a wide range of atmospheric and emission conditions, with concentrations spanning six orders of magnitudes, are well reproduced with an expanded isoprene-SOA scheme implemented into the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model. The scheme considers their three-phase (gas-aqueous-organic phase) partitioning, formation from acid-driven multiphase reactions, and degradation by OH radicals in the gas and aqueous phases. The model results reveal that a non-aqueous formation pathway or direct biogenic emission is needed to supplement the commonly assumed acid-driven multiphase reaction process to explain the observed 2-MT concentrations. This missing pathway contributes to 20–40% of 2-MT in areas with aerosol pH<2 and more than 70% under less acidic conditions (pH~2–5), such as those encountered in the western US and China. The typical summertime gas-phase photochemical lifetimes of 2-MT and 2-MG are estimated to be 4–6 and 20–30 h, respectively, and their aqueous lifetimes are approximately 20–40 h. Our simulations show that predicted 2-MT is mainly influenced by its aqueous phase loss to OH, but 2-MG is more sensitive to gas phase OH loss due to the preferential partitioning of the two tracers in the aqueous and gas phases, respectively.

Diurnal variations in primary and secondary organic aerosols in an eastern China coastal city: The impact of land-sea breezes

The land-sea breeze circulation significantly impacts the atmospheric transport of organic aerosols in coastal regions. However, the links between organic aerosols and land-sea breezes remain poorly understood. In this study, organic marker compounds for biomass burning, primary biological aerosols, biogenic and anthropogenic secondary organic aerosols (SOA) in fine particles from a coastal city in East China were analysed using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Land-sea breeze circulations were identified to explore their potential influence on organic molecular compositions. Organic marker compounds showed obvious diurnal/seasonal patterns. Surprisingly, due to the combined influence of weakened East Asian monsoons and land-sea breezes, all detected organic markers decreased except α/β-pinene SOA markers during land-sea breeze periods in early autumn; whereas, all the organic markers increased except α/β-pinene SOA markers, pollen and plant debris markers during land-sea breeze periods in early spring. Furthermore, the reaction pathway and aging of biogenic SOA were also related to land-sea breezes. During the land-sea breeze periods, the ratios of 2-methylglyceric acid (2-MGA) to 2-methyltetrols increased in early autumn, indicating that more isoprene-derived SOA generated from the high-NOx (nitrogen oxides) pathway when the land-sea breezes occurred; while the ratios decreased in early spring, this may be related to the chemical transformation of 2-MGA to 2-MGA sulfates. Changes in the ratio of monoterpene SOA markers demonstrate that monoterpene SOA was relatively aged during sea breeze periods, while it was fresher when the land breeze occurred. Although boundary layer height, emissions, gas/particle partitioning, etc. are important reasons for the diurnal variations of organic aerosols, night/day ratios of molecular markers increased obviously when land-sea breezes occurred in both early autumn and early spring. Our results provide new insights into the shift in the chemical composition of organic aerosols over coastal areas that are influenced by land-sea breezes.

NMVOC emissions and their formation into secondary organic aerosols over India using WRF-Chem model

Non-methane volatile organic compounds (NMVOC) emissions from anthropogenic, open burning, and biogenic sources, and their formation into secondary organic aerosols (SOA) over India have been examined. The emissions databases EDGAR-HTAP (v2.2), Fire Inventory from NCAR (FINN), and the Model of Emission of Gases and Aerosol (MEGAN) were used. India emits 3% of annual global NMVOC at 30.45 Tg (anthropogenic:8.97; open burning: 2.01; biogenic: 19.47 Tg/year). Spatial and temporal variations for SOA were simulated using the WRF-Chem model combined with a secondary organic aerosol model for the year 2018. WRF-Chem model was expanded to include a scheme of parameterization for estimating isoprene-derived SOA. Annual estimated SOA production was 2.93 Tg/year, 4% of the global SOA.The annual SOA concentration over India was 3.19 ± 2.18 μg/m3 (post-monsoon: 5.16 ± 3.29, winter: 3.74 ± 2.55, summer: 2.62 ± 1.78, and monsoon: 1.24 ± 0.84 μg/m3). WRF-Chem model underestimated the SOA levels, possibly due to incomplete emission inventories and missing NMVOC precursors, including biogenic and primary organic carbon emissions that add to SOA formation. The annual anthropogenic and biogenic SOA had a near equal contribution of 50% mostly from populated regions and evergreen forests.

Modelling the gas–particle partitioning and water uptake of isoprene-derived secondary organic aerosol at high and low relative humidity

Abstract. This study presents a characterization of the hygroscopic growth behaviour and effects of different inorganic seed particles on the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) from the dark ozone-initiated oxidation of isoprene at low NOx conditions. We performed simulations of isoprene oxidation using a gas-phase chemical reaction mechanism based on the Master Chemical Mechanism (MCM) in combination with an equilibrium gas–particle partitioning model to predict the SOA concentration. The equilibrium model accounts for non-ideal mixing in liquid phases, including liquid–liquid phase separation (LLPS), and is based on the AIOMFAC (Aerosol Inorganic–Organic Mixtures Functional groups Activity Coefficients) model for mixture non-ideality and the EVAPORATION (Estimation of VApour Pressure of ORganics, Accounting for Temperature, Intramolecular, and Non-additivity effects) model for pure compound vapour pressures. Measurements from the Cosmics Leaving Outdoor Droplets (CLOUD) chamber experiments, conducted at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) for isoprene ozonolysis cases, were used to aid in parameterizing the SOA yields at different atmospherically relevant temperatures, relative humidity (RH), and reacted isoprene concentrations. To represent the isoprene-ozonolysis-derived SOA, a selection of organic surrogate species is introduced in the coupled modelling system. The model predicts a single, homogeneously mixed particle phase at all relative humidity levels for SOA formation in the absence of any inorganic seed particles. In the presence of aqueous sulfuric acid or ammonium bisulfate seed particles, the model predicts LLPS to occur below ∼ 80 % RH, where the particles consist of an inorganic-rich liquid phase and an organic-rich liquid phase; however, this includes significant amounts of bisulfate and water partitioned to the organic-rich phase. The measurements show an enhancement in the SOA amounts at 85 % RH, compared to 35 % RH, for both the seed-free and seeded cases. The model predictions of RH-dependent SOA yield enhancements at 85 % RH vs. 35 % RH are 1.80 for a seed-free case, 1.52 for the case with ammonium bisulfate seed, and 1.06 for the case with sulfuric acid seed. Predicted SOA yields are enhanced in the presence of an aqueous inorganic seed, regardless of the seed type (ammonium sulfate, ammonium bisulfate, or sulfuric acid) in comparison with seed-free conditions at the same RH level. We discuss the comparison of model-predicted SOA yields with a selection of other laboratory studies on isoprene SOA formation conducted at different temperatures and for a variety of reacted isoprene concentrations. Those studies were conducted at RH levels at or below 40 % with reported SOA mass yields ranging from 0.3 % up to 9.0 %, indicating considerable variations. A robust feature of our associated gas–particle partitioning calculations covering the whole RH range is the predicted enhancement of SOA yield at high RH (&gt; 80 %) compared to low RH (dry) conditions, which is explained by the effect of particle water uptake and its impact on the equilibrium partitioning of all components.

Second-Order Kinetic Rate Coefficients for the Aqueous-Phase Hydroxyl Radical (OH) Oxidation of Isoprene-Derived Secondary Organic Aerosol Compounds at 298 K.

The hydroxyl radical (OH) oxidation of the most abundant nonmethane volatile organic compound emitted to the atmosphere, isoprene (C5H8), produces a number of chemical species that partition to the condensed phase via gas-particle partitioning or form condensed-phase compounds via multiphase/heterogeneous chemistry to generate secondary organic aerosols (SOA). The SOA species in aerosol water or cloud/fog droplets may oxidize further via aqueous reaction with OH radicals, among other fates. Rate coefficients for compounds in isoprene's photochemical cascade are well constrained in the gas phase; however, a gap of information exists for the aqueous OH rate coefficients of the condensed-phased products, precluding the atmospheric modeling of the oxidative fate of isoprene-derived SOA. This work investigated the OH-initiated oxidation kinetic rate coefficients (kOH) for six major SOA compounds formed from the high-NO and low-NO channels of isoprene's atmospheric oxidation and one analog, most of which were synthesized and purified for study: (k1) 2-methyltetrol [MT: 1.14 (±0.17) × 109 M-1 s-1], (k2) 2-methyl-1,2,3-trihydroxy-4-sulfate [MT-4-S: 1.52 (±0.25) × 109 M-1 s-1], (k3) 2-methyl-1,2-dihydroxy-3-sulfate [MD-3-S: 0.56 (±0.15) × 109 M-1 s-1], (k4) 2-methyl-1,2-dihydroxy-but-3-ene [MDE: 4.35 (±1.16) × 109 M-1 s-1], (k5) 2-methyl-2,3-dihydroxy-1,4-dinitrate [MD-1,4-DN: 0.24 (±0.04) × 109 M-1 s-1], (k6) 2-methyl-1,2,4-trihydroxy-3-nitrate [MT-3-N: 1.12 (±0.15) × 109 M-1 s-1], and (k7) 2-methylglyceric acid [MGA: pH 2:1.41 (±0.49) × 109 M-1 s-1; pH 5:0.97 (±0.42) × 109 M-1 s-1]. The second-order rate coefficients are determined against the known kOH of erythritol in pure water. The decays of each reagent were measured with nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and high-performance liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (HPLC-HRMS). The aqueous photooxidation fates of isoprene-derived SOA compounds are substantial and may impact the SOA budget when implemented into global models.

Organic Molecular Tracers in PM2.5 at Urban Sites during Spring and Summer in Japan: Impact of Secondary Organic Aerosols on Water-Soluble Organic Carbon

To understand the characteristics of secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) and estimate their impact on water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) in urban areas in Japan, we measured 17 organic tracers using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry from particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter smaller than 2.5 μm collected at five urban sites in Japan during spring and summer. Most anthropogenic, monoterpene-derived, and isoprene-derived SOA tracers showed meaningful correlations with potential ozone in both these seasons. These results indicate that oxidants play an important role in SOAs produced during both seasons in urban cities in Japan. WSOC was significantly affected by anthropogenic and monoterpene-derived SOAs during spring and three SOA groups during summer at most of the sites sampled. The total estimated secondary organic carbons (SOCs), including mono-aromatic, di-aromatic, monoterpene-derived, and isoprene-derived SOCs, could explain the WSOC fractions of 39–63% in spring and 46–54% in summer at each site. Notably, monoterpene-derived and mono-aromatic SOCs accounted for most of the total estimated SOCs in both spring (85–93%) and summer (75–82%) at each site. These results indicate that SOAs significantly impact WSOC concentrations during both these seasons at urban sites in Japan.

Organosulfates in atmospheric aerosols in Shanghai, China: seasonal and interannual variability, origin, and formation mechanisms

Abstract. Organosulfates (OSs) are ubiquitous in the atmosphere and serve as important tracers for secondary organic aerosols (SOAs). Despite intense research over the years, the abundance, origin, and formation mechanisms of OSs in ambient aerosols, particularly in regions with severe anthropogenic pollution, are still not well understood. In this study, we collected filter samples of ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) over four seasons in both 2015–2016 and 2018–2019 at an urban site in Shanghai, China, and comprehensively characterized the OS species in these PM2.5 samples using an ultra-performance liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer equipped with an electrospray ionization (ESI) source (UPLC-ESI-QToFMS). Overall, we find that while the concentration of organic aerosols (OAs) decreased by 29 % in 2018–2019 compared to that in 2015–2016, mainly as a result of the reduction of anthropogenic pollutant emissions in eastern China, the annually averaged concentrations of 35 quantified OSs were similar in both years (65.5 ± 77.5 ng m−3, 0.57 % ± 0.56 % of OA in 2015–2016 vs. 59.4 ± 79.7 ng m−3, 0.66 % ± 0.56 % of OA in 2018–2019), suggesting an increased contribution of SOAs to OAs in 2018–2019 compared to 2015–2016. Isoprene- and monoterpene-derived OSs were the two most abundant OS families, on average, accounting for 36.3 % and 31.0 % of the quantified OS concentrations, respectively, during both sampling years, suggesting an important contribution of biogenic emissions to the production of OSs and SOAs in Shanghai. The abundance of biogenic OSs, particularly those arising from isoprene, exhibited strong seasonality (peaked in summer) but no significant interannual variability. In contrast, the quantified anthropogenic OSs had little seasonal variability and declined in 2018–2019 compared with those in 2015–2016. The C2 and C3 OS species that have both biogenic and anthropogenic origins contributed, on average, 19.0 % of the quantified OSs, with C2H3O6S−, C3H5O5S−, and C3H5O6S− being the most abundant species, together accounting for 76 % of the C2 and C3 OS concentrations in 2015–2016 and 2018–2019. 2-Methyltetrol sulfate (2-MTS, C5H11O7S−) and monoterpene-derived C10H16NO7S− were the most abundant OSs and nitrooxy OSs in summer, on average, contributing 31 % and 5 % of the quantified OSs, respectively, during the summertime of the sampling years. The substantially larger concentration ratio of 2-MTS to 2-methylglyceric acid sulfate (2-MAS, C4H7O7S−) in summer (6.8–7.8) compared to the other seasons (0.31–0.78) implies that low-NOx oxidation pathways played a dominant role in isoprene-derived SOA formation in summer, while high-NOx reaction pathways were more important in other seasons. We further find that the production of OSs was largely controlled by the level of Ox (Ox= O3+ NO2), namely the photochemistry of OS precursors, particularly in summer, though sulfate concentration, aerosol acidity, and aerosol liquid water content (ALWC) that could affect the heterogeneous chemistry of reactive intermediates leading to OS formation also played a role. Our study provides valuable insights into the characteristics and mechanisms of OS formation in a typical Chinese megacity and implies that the mitigation of Ox pollution can effectively reduce the production of OSs and SOAs in eastern China.

Low molecular weight dicarboxylic acids, oxocarboxylic acids and α-dicarbonyls as ozonolysis products of isoprene: Implication for the gaseous-phase formation of secondary organic aerosols

Oxidation of isoprene, a major biogenic volatile organic compound emitted from forest canopies, is a potential source of oxalic acid; the dominant species in organic aerosols. We evaluated here ozonolysis of isoprene in dry darkness as a source of oxalic (C2), malonic (C3) and succinic (C4) acids. We found that oxalic acid and methylglyoxal are dominant products within 10 min of reaction followed by glyoxylic, malonic or succinic acids. Interestingly, molecular distributions of oxidation products from early reactions (9–29 min) were characterized by the predominance of methylglyoxal followed by C2, which became dominant after 30 min. The isoprene-derived secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) showed chemical evolution with reaction time towards the molecular characteristics of dicarboxylic acids similar to those of ambient aerosols (C2>C3≥C4). The carbon-based relative abundances of methylglyoxal decreased steadily (40%→30%), while those of C2 increased with reaction time (15%→25%), but no such variations persisted for glyoxal (6–10%). This finding means that methylglyoxal is more important intermediate of oxalic acid than glyoxal. In contrast, smaller variability and lower concentrations of pyruvic and glyoxylic acids than other intermediates indicate that oxalic acid formation under dry conditions follows a different pathway than in aqueous-phase heterogeneous chemistry usually invoked for cloud/fog/atmospheric waters. Here, we propose new reaction schemes for high levels of methylglyoxal and oxalic acid via gas-phase chemical reactions with ozone and OH radicals to better interpret the ambient SOA composition. Furthermore, the relative abundances of C2 exhibit small variability from 1 to 8 h, suggesting its stable character towards the oxidation by hydroxyl radicals.

A biogenic secondary organic aerosol source of cirrus ice nucleating particles

Atmospheric ice nucleating particles (INPs) influence global climate by altering cloud formation, lifetime, and precipitation efficiency. The role of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) material as a source of INPs in the ambient atmosphere has not been well defined. Here, we demonstrate the potential for biogenic SOA to activate as depositional INPs in the upper troposphere by combining field measurements with laboratory experiments. Ambient INPs were measured in a remote mountaintop location at –46 °C and an ice supersaturation of 30% with concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 70 L–1. Concentrations of depositional INPs were positively correlated with the mass fractions and loadings of isoprene-derived secondary organic aerosols. Compositional analysis of ice residuals showed that ambient particles with isoprene-derived SOA material can act as depositional ice nuclei. Laboratory experiments further demonstrated the ability of isoprene-derived SOA to nucleate ice under a range of atmospheric conditions. We further show that ambient concentrations of isoprene-derived SOA can be competitive with other INP sources. This demonstrates that isoprene and potentially other biogenically-derived SOA materials could influence cirrus formation and properties.

Strong anthropogenic control of secondary organic aerosol formation from isoprene in Beijing

Abstract. Isoprene-derived secondary organic aerosol (iSOA) is a significant contributor to organic carbon (OC) in some forested regions, such as tropical rainforests and the Southeastern US. However, its contribution to organic aerosol in urban areas that have high levels of anthropogenic pollutants is poorly understood. In this study, we examined the formation of anthropogenically influenced iSOA during summer in Beijing, China. Local isoprene emissions and high levels of anthropogenic pollutants, in particular NOx and particulate SO42-, led to the formation of iSOA under both high- and low-NO oxidation conditions, with significant heterogeneous transformations of isoprene-derived oxidation products to particulate organosulfates (OSs) and nitrooxy-organosulfates (NOSs). Ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry was combined with a rapid automated data processing technique to quantify 31 proposed iSOA tracers in offline PM2.5 filter extracts. The co-elution of the inorganic ions in the extracts caused matrix effects that impacted two authentic standards differently. The average concentration of iSOA OSs and NOSs was 82.5 ng m−3, which was around 3 times higher than the observed concentrations of their oxygenated precursors (2-methyltetrols and 2-methylglyceric acid). OS formation was dependant on both photochemistry and the sulfate available for reactive uptake, as shown by a strong correlation with the product of ozone (O3) and particulate sulfate (SO42-). A greater proportion of high-NO OS products were observed in Beijing compared with previous studies in less polluted environments. The iSOA-derived OSs and NOSs represented 0.62 % of the oxidized organic aerosol measured by aerosol mass spectrometry on average, but this increased to ∼3 % on certain days. These results indicate for the first time that iSOA formation in urban Beijing is strongly controlled by anthropogenic emissions and results in extensive conversion to OS products from heterogenous reactions.

Natural and Anthropogenically Influenced Isoprene Oxidation in Southeastern United States and Central Amazon.

Anthropogenic emissions alter secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation chemistry from naturally emitted isoprene. We use correlations of tracers and tracer ratios to provide new perspectives on sulfate, NOx, and particle acidity influencing isoprene-derived SOA in two isoprene-rich forested environments representing clean to polluted conditions-wet and dry seasons in central Amazonia and Southeastern U.S. summer. We used a semivolatile thermal desorption aerosol gas chromatograph (SV-TAG) and filter samplers to measure SOA tracers indicative of isoprene/HO2 (2-methyltetrols, C5-alkene triols, 2-methyltetrol organosulfates) and isoprene/NOx (2-methylglyceric acid, 2-methylglyceric acid organosulfate) pathways. Summed concentrations of these tracers correlated with particulate sulfate spanning three orders of magnitude, suggesting that 1 μg m-3 reduction in sulfate corresponds with at least ∼0.5 μg m-3 reduction in isoprene-derived SOA. We also find that isoprene/NOx pathway SOA mass primarily comprises organosulfates, ∼97% in the Amazon and ∼55% in Southeastern United States. We infer under natural conditions in high isoprene emission regions that preindustrial aerosol sulfate was almost exclusively isoprene-derived organosulfates, which are traditionally thought of as representative of an anthropogenic influence. We further report the first field observations showing that particle acidity correlates positively with 2-methylglyceric acid partitioning to the gas phase and negatively with the ratio of 2-methyltetrols to C5-alkene triols.

Characteristics of fresh and aged volatile organic compounds from open burning of crop residues

Open burning of crop residues is a major source of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which contribute substantially to the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) in the atmosphere. An integrated system of combustion chamber coupled with potential aerosol mass (PAM) reactor was used to demonstrate the emission characteristics of fresh and aged VOCs (corresponding to 2- and 7-day atmospheric aging) from the burning of rice, maize, and wheat straws. The average emission factor (EF) of quantified non-methane VOCs (NMVOCs) emitted from the straw (fresh) was 1.82 ± 0.41 g/kg and wheat straw had the highest EFs. The EF residues of quantified NMVOCs decreased considerably after photo-oxidation in PAM. Stronger oxidation condition (7-day aging) produced a 57.2% decline in NMVOC EFs, compared with 42.3% decline during 2-day atmospheric aging. The largest declines were observed in the alkenes group: 82.6% and 66.2% after 7- and 2-day aging, respectively, which is consistent with their high reactivity toward oxidation with ozone and hydroxyl radical (OH). Aromatic compounds mainly reacted with OH, and their EFs decreased 59.1% on average. Alkanes were much less reactive, and their EFs only decreased an average of 29.8% after the oxidation processes. Considerable SOAs formation was observed in the fine particulate matter (PM2.5) filter samples collected after the oxidation of isoprene, benzene and toluene. The moderate to strong correlations between isoprene and isoprene-derived SOAs, between benzene and toluene with nitrophenols, and between toluene and aromatic acids demonstrate that the VOCs were degraded in the reactions with oxidative radicals, producing active contributors to SOAs formations.

Isoprene-Derived Secondary Organic Aerosol Induces the Expression of MicroRNAs Associated with Inflammatory/Oxidative Stress Response in Lung Cells.

Exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5), of which secondary organic aerosol (SOA) is a major constituent, is linked to adverse health outcomes, including cardiovascular disease, lung cancer, and preterm birth. Atmospheric oxidation of isoprene, the most abundant nonmethane hydrocarbon emitted into Earth's atmosphere primarily from vegetation, contributes to SOA formation. Isoprene-derived SOA has previously been found to alter inflammatory/oxidative stress genes. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are epigenetic regulators that serve as post-transcriptional modifiers and key mediators of gene expression. To assess whether isoprene-derived SOA alters miRNA expression, BEAS-2B lung cells were exposed to laboratory-generated isoprene-derived SOA constituents derived from the acid-driven multiphase chemistry of authentic methacrylic acid epoxide (MAE) or isomeric isoprene epoxydiols (IEPOX) with acidic sulfate aerosol particles. These IEPOX- and MAE-derived SOA constituents have been shown to be measured in large quantities within PM2.5 collected from isoprene-rich areas affected by acidic sulfate aerosol particles derived from human activities. A total of 29 miRNAs were identified as differentially expressed when exposed to IEPOX-derived SOA and 2 when exposed to MAE-derived SOA, a number of which are inflammatory/oxidative stress associated. These results suggest that miRNAs may modulate the inflammatory/oxidative stress response to SOA exposure, thereby advancing the understanding of airway cell epigenetic response to SOA.

Mixing order of sulfate aerosols and isoprene epoxydiols affects secondary organic aerosol formation in chamber experiments

The reactive uptake of isoprene epoxydiols (IEPOX) is a significant source of isoprene-derived secondary organic aerosols (SOA). Multiple field studies have reported that summertime isoprene-derived SOA in the Southeastern U.S. correlated strongly with sulfate mass concentration. However, previous laboratory studies have focused largely on the effect of aerosol acidity on the reactive uptake of IEPOX. In this study, we investigated the role of inorganic sulfate aerosols in SOA formation arising from the reactive uptake of trans-β-IEPOX (the predominant IEPOX isomer) at 50–56% RH in laboratory chamber experiments. Our measurements showed that the SOA mass concentration increased with the sulfate mass for both highly acidic and less acidic seed aerosols. This was due to the roles that sulfate played in SOA formation as a particle-phase reactant and as a contributor to aerosol surface area and volume. Higher concentrations of SOA were formed when highly acidic seed aerosols were used, consistent with previous laboratory studies. SOA mass concentration and composition were also observed to be dependent on the injection order of IEPOX and sulfate seed aerosols (i.e., injection of IEPOX first vs. Injection of seed aerosols first) in the chamber experiments. Higher SOA mass concentrations were measured in experiments where sulfate seed aerosols were introduced into the chamber first, followed by IEPOX. Volatility measurements showed that the SOA formed in the “seed aerosols first” experiments likely contained larger quantities of low volatility organic matter compared to SOA formed in the “IEPOX first” experiments. These results showed that the mass concentration and composition of IEPOX-derived SOA formed in chamber experiments can be sensitive to mixing conditions in the chamber brought about by slight differences in experimental methodology (in this case injection procedure). The sensitivity of SOA formation to the amount of seed aerosols and injection procedure used in chamber experiments indicated that caution should be exercised when extrapolating laboratory data to ambient conditions.

Enhancement of Atmospheric Nucleation by Highly Oxygenated Organic Molecules: A Density Functional Theory Study.

New particle formation (NPF) by gas-particle conversion is the main source of atmospheric aerosols. Highly oxygenated organic molecules (HOMs) and sulfuric acid (SA) are important NPF participants. 2-Methylglyceric acid (MGA), a kind of HOMs, is a tracer of isoprene-derived secondary organic aerosols. The nucleation mechanisms of MGA with SA were studied using density functional theory and atmospheric cluster dynamics simulation in this study, along with that of MGA with methanesulfonic acid (MSA) as a comparison. Our theoretical works indicate that the (MGA)(SA) and (MGA)(MSA) clusters are the most stable ones in the (MGA) i(SA) j ( i = 1-2, j = 1-2) and (MGA) i(MSA) j ( i = 1-2, j = 1-2) clusters, respectively. Both the formation rates of (MGA)(SA) and (MGA)(MSA) clusters are quite large and could have significant contributions to NPF. The results imply that the homomolecular nucleation of MGA is unlikely to occur in the atmosphere, and MGA and SA can effectively contribute to heteromolecular nucleation mainly in the form of heterodimers. MSA exhibits properties similar to SA in its ability to form clusters with MGA but is slightly weaker than SA.

Bouncier Particles at Night: Biogenic Secondary Organic Aerosol Chemistry and Sulfate Drive Diel Variations in the Aerosol Phase in a Mixed Forest.

Aerosol phase state is critical for quantifying aerosol effects on climate and air quality. However, significant challenges remain in our ability to predict and quantify phase state during its evolution in the atmosphere. Herein, we demonstrate that aerosol phase (liquid, semisolid, solid) exhibits a diel cycle in a mixed forest environment, oscillating between a viscous, semisolid phase state at night and liquid phase state with phase separation during the day. The viscous nighttime particles existed despite higher relative humidity and were independently confirmed by bounce factor measurements and atomic force microscopy. High-resolution mass spectrometry shows the more viscous phase state at night is impacted by the formation of terpene-derived and higher molecular weight secondary organic aerosol (SOA) and smaller inorganic sulfate mass fractions. Larger daytime particulate sulfate mass fractions, as well as a predominance of lower molecular weight isoprene-derived SOA, lead to the liquid state of the daytime particles and phase separation after greater uptake of liquid water, despite the lower daytime relative humidity. The observed diel cycle of aerosol phase should provoke rethinking of the SOA atmospheric lifecycle, as it suggests diurnal variability in gas-particle partitioning and mixing time scales, which influence aerosol multiphase chemistry, lifetime, and climate impacts.

Organosulfates in Atlanta, Georgia: anthropogenic influences on biogenic secondary organic aerosol formation

Abstract. Organosulfates are secondary organic aerosol (SOA) products that form from reactions of volatile organic compounds (VOC), such as isoprene, in the presence of sulfate that is primarily emitted by fossil fuel combustion. This study examines the anthropogenic influence on biogenic organosulfate formation at an urban site in Atlanta, Georgia (GA) in the southeastern United States (US). Organosulfates were analyzed in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) collected during August 2015 in Atlanta using hydrophilic interaction liquid chromatography (HILIC), tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS), and high-resolution time-of-flight (ToF) mass spectrometry. By their MS/MS response, 32 major organosulfate species were identified, selected species were quantified, and other species were semi-quantified using surrogate standards. Organosulfates accounted for 16.5 % of PM2.5 organic carbon (OC). Isoprene-derived organosulfates were the most abundant, dominated by methyltetrol sulfate which accounted for 12.6 % of PM2.5 OC. Together, the isoprene-derived organosulfates accounted for the majority of the isoprene-derived SOA that had been previously observed in Atlanta, but had not been identified at the molecular level. Other major species included seven monoterpene-derived organosulfates, five diesel and/or biodiesel-derived organosulfates, and three new organosulfates that are also expected to derive from isoprene. Organosulfate species and concentrations in Atlanta were compared to those in a rural forested site in Centreville, Alabama (AL) during summer 2013, which were also dominated by isoprene-derived organosulfates. In Atlanta, isoprene-derived organosulfate concentrations were 2–6 times higher and accounted for twice as much OC. The greatest enhancement in concentration was observed for 2-methylglyceric acid sulfate whose formation is enhanced in the presence of nitrogen oxides (NO and NO2; NOx) and is a tracer for isoprene high-NOx SOA. The isoprene-derived organosulfates indicated a stronger influence of NOx in Atlanta compared to Centreville. Overall, these results suggest that SOA in the southeastern US can be reduced by controlling NOx and SO2 emissions from fossil fuel combustion. This study gives insights into the major organosulfate species that should be targets for future measurements in urban environments and standard development.
