Sources for Irish women’s history

ABSTRACT The original ‘Directory of Sources for Irish Women’s History’ was made available on CD-ROM in 1999. With the advances made in technology the CD has now become obsolete and can no longer be read on more recent computers. In mid-2022 the Irish Manuscripts Commission and the Mná 100 unit of the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media supported the transfer of the contents of the CD to a website which would be freely and publicly available. Much of the information on repositories and collections have been updated, and new resources added.

Proceedings of the Irish House of Lords 1771-1800, ed. James Kelly

The three volumes on the proceedings of the House of Lords in Ireland from 1771 to 1800, published by the Irish Manuscripts Commission, comprise a unique and invaluable collection. The work undertaken by the editor in gathering together from disparate sources such a wealth of information and compiling it in a manner that is both aesthetically pleasing and academically rigorous is to be admired. Similarly, the commitment of the Irish Manuscripts Commission to producing such high-quality publications with increasing regularity and without diminution in the highest standards of production is an enormous fillip to all in financially straitened times when such essential enterprises are among the most vulnerable to swingeing cuts in public expenditure. The limitations of the printed record for the British and Irish parliaments prior to 1800 are quickly evident to anyone undertaking research in those areas. With regard to Ireland, the recording of proceedings in the House of Commons commenced in 1613, though the actual publication of those records in The Journals of the House of Commons of the Kingdom of Ireland did not get under way until 1752. The first comprehensive collection of The Statutes at Large passed in the Parliaments held in Ireland, covering 1310 to 1761 in eight volumes, was published in 1765. The process was even slower for the House of Lords, with records commencing in 1634 and publication of The Journals of the House of Lords of the Kingdom of Ireland in 1780. The other significant published record of proceedings, and the first comprehensive record of debates, commenced in 1781 with the publication of The Parliamentary Register: or, History of the Proceedings and Debates of the House of Commons of Ireland. There was no equivalent for the House of Lords until the publication of these Proceedings.
