Whither or Wither the Sulfur Anomaly in Planetary Nebulae?

We present a thorough investigation of the long-standing sulfur anomaly enigma. Our analysis uses chemical abundances from the most extensive data set available for 126 planetary nebulae (PNs) with improved accuracy and reduced uncertainties from a 10° × 10° Galactic bulge region. By using argon as a superior PN metallicity indicator, the anomaly is significantly reduced and better constrained. For the first time in PNs we show sulfur α-element lockstep with both oxygen and argon. We dispel hypotheses that the anomaly originates from underestimation of higher sulfur ionization stages. Using a machine-learning approach, we show that earlier ionization correction factor schemes contributed significantly to the anomaly. We find a correlation between the sulfur anomaly and the age/mass of PN progenitors, with the anomaly either absent or significantly reduced in PNs with young progenitors. Despite inherent challenges and uncertainties, we link this to PN dust chemistry, noting those with carbon-dust chemistry show a more pronounced anomaly. By integrating these findings, we provide a plausible explanation for the residual, reduced sulfur anomaly and propose its potential as an indicator of relative galaxy age compositions based on PNs.

Chemical abundances in Seyfert galaxies – IX. Helium abundance estimates

ABSTRACT For the first time, the helium abundance relative to hydrogen (He/H), which relied on direct measurements of the electron temperature, has been derived in the narrow line regions (NLRs) from a local sample of Seyfert 2 nuclei. In view of this, optical emission line intensities [3000 < λ(Å) < 7000] of 65 local Seyfert 2 nuclei (z < 0.2), taken from Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 15 and additional compilation from the literature, were considered. We used photoionization model grid to derive an Ionization Correction Factor (ICF) for the neutral helium. The application of this ICF indicates that the NLRs of Seyfert 2 present a neutral helium fraction of ∼50 per cent in relation to the total helium abundance. We find that Seyfert 2 nuclei present helium abundance ranging from 0.60 to 2.50 times the solar value, while ∼85 per cent of the sample present oversolar abundance values. The derived (He/H)–(O/H) abundance relation from the Seyfert 2 is stepper than that of star-forming regions (SFs) and this difference could be due to excess of helium injected into the interstellar medium by the winds of Wolf–Rayet stars. From a regression to zero metallicity, by using Seyfert 2 estimates combined with SFs estimates, we obtained a primordial helium mass fraction Yp = 0.2441 ± 0.0037, a value in good agreement with the one inferred from the temperature fluctuations of the cosmic microwave background by the Planck Collaboration, i.e. $Y_{\rm p}^{\rm Planck}=0.2471\pm 0.0003$.

Spectroscopic analysis tool for intEgraL fieLd unIt daTacubEs (satellite): case studies of NGC 7009 and NGC 6778 with MUSE

ABSTRACT Integral field spectroscopy (IFS) provides a unique capability to spectroscopically study extended sources over a 2D field of view, but it also requires new techniques and tools. In this paper, we present an automatic code, Spectroscopic Analysis Tool for intEgraL fieLd unIt daTacubEs, satellite, designed to fully explore such capability in the characterization of extended objects, such as planetary nebulae, H ii regions, galaxies, etc. satellite carries out 1D and 2D spectroscopic analysis through a number of pseudo-slits that simulate slit spectrometry, as well as emission line imaging. The 1D analysis permits direct comparison of the integral field unit (IFU) data with previous studies based on long-slit spectroscopy, while the 2D analysis allows the exploration of physical properties in both spatial directions. Interstellar extinction, electron temperatures and densities, ionic abundances from collisionally excited lines, total elemental abundances, and ionization correction factors are computed employing the pyneb package. A Monte Carlo approach is implemented in the code to compute the uncertainties for all the physical parameters. satellite provides a powerful tool to extract physical information from IFS observations in an automatic and user configurable way. The capabilities and performance of satellite are demonstrated by means of a comparison between the results obtained from the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) data of the planetary nebula NGC 7009 with the results obtained from long-slit and IFU data available in the literature. The satellite characterization of NGC 6778 based on MUSE data is also presented.

On the use of sulphur as a tracer for abundances in galaxies

Abstract 2+We present a methodology for the use of sulphur as global metallicity tracer in galaxies, allowing performing a complete abundance analysis using only the red-to-near-infrared spectral region. We have applied it to a compilation of high-quality data split into two samples: H ii regions (DHR) in spiral and irregular galaxies, and dwarf galaxies dominated by a strong starburst (H ii Gal). Sulphur abundances have been derived by direct methods under the assumption of an ionization structure composed of two zones: an intermediate-ionization one where S++ is originated, and a low-ionization one where S+ is formed. Ionization correction factors (ICF) have been calculated from the Ar/Ar3+ ratio and are shown to correlate with the hardness of the radiation field. Only about 10 per cent of the objects show S3+ contributions to the total abundance larger than 30 per cent. A good correlation exists between sulphur abundance and ionizing temperature with low-metallicity objects being ionized by hotter stars. No correlation is found between ionization parameter and total S/H abundance. Most of the H ii Gal objects show S/O ratios below the solar value and a trend for increasing S/O ratios with increasing sulphur abundances, while DHR objects show S/O ratios larger than solar and a tendency for lower S/O ratios for higher metallicities. Finally, we present a calibration of the sulphur abundance through the S23 parameter that remains single valued up to sulphur abundances well beyond the solar value. S23 is independent of the ionization parameter and only weakly dependent on ionizing temperature.

Catching a grown-up starfish planetary nebula – II. Plasma analysis and central star properties of PC 22

ABSTRACT After performing the morpho-kinematic analysis of the planetary nebula (PN) PC 22, we now present its nebular and stellar analysis. The plasma investigation relies on the novel use of a Monte Carlo analysis associated with the pyneb code for the uncertainty propagation. The innermost region of the nebula shows electronic temperatures Te ≈ 10 800 K using [N ii] and ≈13 000 K using [O iii] and electronic densities ne ≈ 600 cm−3. We also used for the first time a machine learning algorithm to calculate ionization correction factors (ICFs) specifically adapted to PC 22. This has allowed us to have pioneer ICFs for (S+ + S++)/O++, Cl++/O++, and Ar3+ + Ar4+, as well as a possible new determination for the total abundance of neon. The study of the stellar spectrum revealed the presence of broad emission lines consistent with a Wolf–Rayet-type [WR] classification and more precisely a [WO1] subtype based on different qualitative and quantitative criteria. This classification is also coherent with the high stellar temperature derived from the reproduction of the ionization state of the gas with the Mexican Million Models data base (3MdB) and the best-fitting model obtained with the NLTE model atmosphere code PoWR. PC 22 is therefore a new addition to the [WO1]-subtype PNe.

Chemical abundances in Seyfert galaxies – VII. Direct abundance determination of neon based on optical and infrared emission lines

ABSTRACT For the first time, neon abundance has been derived in the narrow line region from a sample of Seyfert 2 nuclei. In view of this, we compiled from the literature fluxes of optical and infrared (IR) narrow emission lines for 35 Seyfert 2 nuclei in the local universe ($z \:\lesssim \:0.06$). The relative intensities of emission lines were used to derive the ionic and total neon and oxygen abundances through electron temperature estimations (Te-method). For the neon, abundance estimates were obtained by using both Te-method and IR-method. Based on photoionization model results, we found a lower electron temperature [$t_{\rm e}({\rm Ne\, \small {III}})$] for the gas phase where the Ne2 + is located in comparison with t3 for the O2 + ion. We find that the differences (D) between Ne2 +/H+ ionic abundances calculated from IR-method and Te-method (assuming t3 in the Ne2 +/H+ derivation) are similar to the derivations in star-forming regions (SFs) and they are reduced by a mean factor of ∼3 when $t_{\rm e}({\rm Ne\, \small {III}})$ is considered. We propose a semi-empirical Ionization Correction Factor (ICF) for the neon, based on [Ne ii]12.81$\rm{\mu m}$, [Ne iii]15.56$\rm{\mu m}$, and oxygen ionic abundance ratios. We find that the average Ne/H abundance for the Seyfert 2s sample is nearly 2 times higher than similar estimate for SFs. Finally, for the very high metallicity regime (i.e. [$\rm 12+log(O/H)\: \gtrsim \: 8.80$]) an increase in Ne/O with O/H is found, which likely indicates secondary stellar production for the neon.

Ionization correction factors and dust depletion patterns in giant H ii regions

ABSTRACT We provide new ionization correction factors (ICFs) for carbon, nitrogen, neon, sulfur, chlorine, and argon in giant H ii regions. The ICFs were computed using the most representative photoionization models from a large initial grid. The models were selected using an observational sample of 985 giant H ii regions (GHR) in spiral galaxies and blue compact galaxies (BCG). The observational sample was also used to assign a weight to each model describing how well it agrees with observations in the [O iii]/H β versus [N ii]/H α diagram. In addition to the ICFs we provide, for the first time, analytical expressions for their formal uncertainties. We use our ICFs to compute the abundances of nitrogen, neon, sulfur, and argon in our samples. Our abundances are robust within the adopted framework, but may require revision in the case of important changes in atomic data or in the spectral energy distribution of the ionizing radiation in H ii regions. Considering the abundance patterns we obtained for the BCG sample (abundances for the GHR sample are less reliable) we find that oxygen is depleted into dust grains at a rate increasing with metallicity and reaching 0.12 dex at solar abundances. The discussion of possible depletion of sulfur and argon requires considering recent Type Ia Supernova yields, which are still uncertain.

On the radial abundance gradients of nitrogen and oxygen in the inner Galactic disc

ABSTRACT We present optical spectra of nine Galactic H ii regions observed with the 10.4 m Gran Telescopio Canarias telescope and located at Galactocentric distances (RG) from 4 to 8 kpc. The distances of the objects have been revised using Gaia DR2 parallaxes. We determine the electron temperature for all the nebulae, which allows a precise computation of their ionic abundances. We have included published data of an additional sample of Galactic H ii regions, providing a final data set of 42 objects. The shape of the radial gradients of O/H and N/H is linear and constant, discarding any substantial change of the slope, at least for RG between 4 and 17 kpc. The small dispersion of the O/H and N/H values with respect to the computed gradients imply the absence of significant azimuthal variations of the chemical abundances, at least in the quadrant covered by our observations. We find an almost flat N/O versus O/H diagram relation. This result is not observed in other nearby spiral galaxies except M31. Finally, we compare our computed gradients with those obtained using far-infrared (FIR) spectra. We confirm the significant offset in the N/O distribution between the optical and FIR observations. Possible explanations involve ionization correction factors and the strong dependence on density of the abundance determinations based on FIR lines.

Helium abundances and its radial gradient from the spectra of H ii regions and ring nebulae of the Milky Way

ABSTRACT We determine the radial abundance gradient of helium in the disc of the Galaxy from published spectra of 19 H ii regions and ring nebulae surrounding massive O-type stars. We revise the Galactocentric distances of the objects considering Gaia DR2 parallaxes (Gaia Collaboration 2018) and determine the physical conditions and the ionic abundance of He+ in a homogeneous way, using between 3 and 10 He i recombination lines in each object. We estimate the total He abundance of the nebulae and its radial abundance gradient using four different ionization correction factor (ICF; He) schemes. The slope of the gradient is always negative and weakly dependent on the ICF(He) scheme, especially when only the objects with log(η) < 0.9 are considered. The slope values go from −0.0078 to −0.0044 dex kpc−1, consistent with the predictions of chemical evolution models of the Milky Way and chemodynamical simulations of disc galaxies. Finally, we estimate the abundance deviations of He, O, and N in a sample of ring nebulae around Galactic Wolf–Rayet stars, finding a quite similar He overabundance of about +0.24 ± 0.11 dex in three stellar ejecta ring nebulae.

CHAOS V: Recombination Line Carbon Abundances in M 101

Abstract The CHemical Abundances Of Spirals (CHAOS) project is building a large database of Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) H ii region spectra in nearby spiral galaxies to use direct abundances to better determine the dispersion in metallicity as a function of galactic radius. Here, we present CHAOS LBT observations of C ii λ4267 emission detected in 10 H ii regions in M 101, and using a new photoionization model-based ionization correction factor, we convert these measurements into total carbon abundances. A comparison with M 101 C ii recombination line observations from the literature shows excellent agreement, and we measure a relatively steep gradient in log(C/H) of −0.37 ± 0.06 dex . The C/N observations are consistent with a constant value of log(C/N) = 0.84 with a dispersion of only 0.09 dex, which, given the different nucleosynthetic sources of C and N, is challenging to understand. We also note that when plotting N/O versus O/H, all of the H ii regions with detections of C ii λ4267 present N/O abundances at the minimum of the scatter in N/O at a given value of O/H. If the high surface brightness necessary for the detection of the faint recombination lines is interpreted as an indicator of H ii region youth, then this may point to a lack of nitrogen pollution in the youngest H ii regions. In the future, we anticipate that the CHAOS project will significantly increase the total number of C ii λ4267 measurements in extragalactic H ii regions.

Newly Improved Ionization Corrections for the Neutral Interstellar Medium: Enabling Accurate Abundance Determinations in Star-forming Galaxies throughout the Universe*

Abstract Studies measuring the chemical abundances of the neutral gas in star-forming galaxies (SFGs) require ionization correction factors (ICFs) to accurately measure their metal contents. In the work presented here, we calculate newly improved ICFs for a sample of SFGs. These new corrections include both the contaminating ionized gas along the line of sight ( ) and unaccounted for higher ionization stages in the neutral gas ( ). We make use of recently acquired spectroscopic observations taken with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph on board Hubble to measure column densities for Fe ii and Fe iii. Using the Fe iii/Fe ii ratios as well as other physical properties (i.e., log[ ], N(H i), T, and Z), we generate ad hoc photoionization models with CLOUDY to quantify the corrections required for each of the targets. We identify a luminosity threshold of log[ ] ∼ 40.75 erg s−1 above which the values for nitrogen are relatively higher ( −0.7) than those for the rest of the elements ( ). This behavior indicates that, for the high UV luminosity objects, N ii is found in non-negligible quantities in the neutral gas, making these corrections critical for determining the true abundances in the interstellar medium. In addition, we calculate ICFs from a uniform grid of models covering a wide range of physical properties typically observed in studies of SFGs and extragalactic H ii regions. We provide the community with tabulated ICF values for the neutral gas abundances measured from a variety of environments and applicable to chemical studies of the high-redshift universe.

Exploring the differences of integrated and spatially resolved analysis using integral field unit data: the case of Abell 14

ABSTRACT We present a new approach to study planetary nebulae using integral field spectroscopy. VLT@VIMOS datacube of the planetary nebula Abell 14 is analysed in three different ways by extracting: (i) the integrated spectrum, (ii) one-dimensional simulated long-slit spectra for different position angles, and (iii) spaxel-by-spaxel spectra. These data are used to build emission-line diagnostic diagrams and explore the ionization structure and excitation mechanisms combining data from one- and three-dimensional photoionization models. The integrated and 1D simulated spectra are suitable for developing diagnostic diagrams, while the spaxel spectra can lead to misinterpretation of the observations. We find that the emission-line ratios of Abell 14 are consistent with UV photoionised emission; however, there are some pieces of evidence of an additional thermal mechanism. The chemical abundances confirm its previous classification as a Type I planetary nebula, without spatial variation. We find, though, variation in the ionization correction factors as a function of the slit’s position angle. The star at the geometric centre of Abell 14 has an A5 spectral type with an effective temperature of Teff = 7909 ± 135 K and surface gravity log(g) = 1.4 ± 0.1 cm s−2. Hence, this star cannot be responsible for the ionization state of the nebula. Gaia parallaxes of this star yield distances between 3.6 and 4.5 kpc in good agreement with the distance derived from a three-dimensional photoionization modelling of Abell 14, indicating the presence of a binary system at the centre of the planetary nebula.

Ionization correction factors for sodium, potassium, and calcium in planetary nebulae

ABSTRACT We use a large grid of photoionization models that are representative of observed planetary nebulae (PNe) to derive ionization correction factors (ICFs) for sodium, potassium, and calcium. In addition to the analytical expressions of the ICFs, we provide the range of validity where the ICFs can be safely used and an estimate of the typical uncertainties associated with the ICFs. We improved the previous ICFs for calcium and potassium in the literature and suggest for the first time an ICF for sodium. We tested our ICFs with a sample of 39 PNe with emission lines of some ion of these elements. No obvious trend is found between the derived abundances and the degree of ionization, suggesting that our ICFs do not seem to be introducing an artificial bias in the results. The abundances found in the studied PNe range from $-2.88_{-0.22}^{+0.21}$ to −2.09 ± 0.21 in log (Na/O), from $-4.20_{-0.45}^{+0.31}$ to $-3.05_{-0.47}^{+0.26}$ in log (K/O), and from $-3.71_{-0.34}^{+0.41}$ to $-1.57_{-0.47}^{+0.33}$ in log (Ca/O). These numbers imply that some of the studied PNe have up to ∼65 per cent, 75 per cent, or 95 per cent of their Na, K, and/or Ca atoms condensed into dust grains, respectively. As expected, the highest depletions are found for calcium which is the element with the highest condensation temperature.

The case of NGC 6302: the impact of shocks in the derivation of nitrogen abundances

ABSTRACT High nitrogen abundance is characteristic of Type I planetary nebulae, as well as their highly filamentary structure. In the present work, we test the hypothesis of shocks as a relevant excitation mechanism for a Type I nebula, NGC 6302, using recently released diagnostic diagrams to distinguish shocks from photoexcitation. The construction of the diagrams depends on emission-line ratios and kinematical information. NGC 6302 shows the relevance of shocks in peripheral regions and their importance to the whole nebula. Using shocks, we question the usual assumption of ionization correction factor calculation, justifying a warning regarding broadly used abundance derivation methods. From kinematical analysis, we derive a new distance for NGC 6302 of $805\pm 143\,$ pc.

The Chemical Evolution of Carbon, Nitrogen, and Oxygen in Metal-poor Dwarf Galaxies*

Abstract Ultraviolet nebular emission lines are important for understanding the time evolution and nucleosynthetic origins of their associated elements, but the underlying trends of their relative abundances are unclear. We present UV spectroscopy of 20 nearby low-metallicity, high-ionization dwarf galaxies obtained using the Hubble Space Telescope. Building upon previous studies, we analyze the C/O relationship for a combined sample of 40 galaxies with significant detections of the UV O+2/C+2 collisionally excited lines and direct-method oxygen abundance measurements. Using new analytic carbon ionization correction factor relationships, we confirm the flat trend in C/O versus O/H observed for local metal-poor galaxies. We find an average log(C/O) = −0.71 with an intrinsic dispersion of σ = 0.17 dex. The C/N ratio also appears to be constant at log(C/N) = 0.75, plus significant scatter (σ = 0.20 dex), with the result that carbon and nitrogen show similar evolutionary trends. This large and real scatter in C/O over a large range in O/H implies that measuring the UV C and O emission lines alone does not provide a reliable indicator of the O/H abundance. By modeling the chemical evolution of C, N, and O of individual targets, we find that the C/O ratio is very sensitive to both the detailed star formation history and to supernova feedback. Longer burst durations and lower star formation efficiencies correspond to low C/O ratios, while the escape of oxygen atoms in supernovae winds produces decreased effective oxygen yields and larger C/O ratios. Further, a declining C/O relationship is seen with increasing baryonic mass due to increasing effective oxygen yields.

An imaging spectroscopic survey of the planetary nebula NGC 7009 with MUSE

Aims. The spatial structure of the emission lines and continuum over the 50″ extent of the nearby, O-rich, PN NGC 7009 (Saturn Nebula) have been observed with the MUSE integral field spectrograph on the ESO Very Large Telescope. This study concentrates on maps of line emission and their interpretation in terms of physical conditions. Methods. MUSE Science Verification data, in <0.6″ seeing, have been reduced and analysed as maps of emission lines and continuum over the wavelength range 4750–9350 Å. The dust extinction, the electron densities and temperatures of various phases of the ionized gas, abundances of species from low to high ionization and some total abundances are determined using standard techniques. Results. Emission line maps over the bright shells are presented, from neutral to the highest ionization available (He II and [Mn V]). For collisionally excited lines (CELs), maps of electron temperature (Te from [N II] and [S III]) and density (Ne from [S II] and [Cl III]) are available and for optical recombination lines (ORLs) temperature (from the Paschen jump and ratio of He I lines) and density (from high Paschen lines). These estimates are compared: for the first time, maps of the differences in CEL and ORL Te’s have been derived, and correspondingly a map of t2 between a CEL and ORL temperature, showing considerable detail. Total abundances of only He and O were formed, the latter using three ionization correction factors. However, the map of He/H is not flat, departing by ~2% from a constant value, with remnants corresponding to ionization structures. An integrated spectrum over an area of 2340 arcsec2 was also formed and compared to 1D photoionization models. Conclusions. The spatial variation of a range of nebular parameters illustrates the complexity of the ionized media in NGC 7009. These MUSE data are very rich with detections of hundreds of lines over areas of hundreds of arcsec2 and follow-on studies are outlined.

Chemistry in the dIrr galaxy Leo A

We present chemical abundance determinations of two H II regions in the dIrr galaxy Leo A, from GTC OSIRIS long-slit spectra. Both H II regions are of low excitation and seem to be ionised by stars later than O8V spectral type. In one of the H II regions we used the direct method: O$^{+2}$ ionic abundance was calculated using an electronic temperature determined from the [O III] $\lambda\lambda$4363/5007 line ratio; ionic abundances of O$^+$, N$^+$, and S$^+$ were calculated using a temperature derived from a parameterised formula. O, N and S total abundances were calculated using Ionisation Correction Factors from the literature for each element. Chemical abundances using strong-line methods were also determined, with similar results. For the second H II region, no electron temperature was determined thus the direct method cannot be used. We computed photoionisation structure models for both H II regions in order to determine their chemical composition from the best-fitted models. It is confirmed that Leo A in a very low metallicity galaxy, with 12+log(O/H)=7.4$\pm$0.2, log(N/O)=$-$1.6, and log(S/O)=$-$1.1. Emission lines of the only PN detected in Leo A were reanalysed and a photoionisation model was computed. This PN shows 12+log(O/H) very similar to the ones of the H II regions and a low N abundance, although its log(N/O) ratio is much larger than the values of the H II regions. Its central star seems to have had an initial mass lower than 2 M$_\odot$.

The role of shocks in the determination of empirical abundances for type-I PNe

AbstractWe investigate, in the light of new diagnostic diagrams, the role of shocks in the ionization profile of type-I planetary nebulae, and their relation to the empirical derivation of chemical abundances. We apply our technique to two well-known type-I objects: NGC 2440 and NGC 6302. Our results indicate that shocks play a very important role in the spectra of both nebulae and, since the presence of shocks reinforces the flux of low ionization lines, this artificial reinforcement can lead to incorrect chemical abundances, when they are derived through Ionization Correction Factors, at least for type-I PNe.

Neon, sulphur, and argon abundances of planetary nebulae in the sub-solar metallicity Galactic anti-centre

Context.Spectra of planetary nebulae show numerous fine structure emission lines from ionic species, enabling us to study the overall abundances of the nebular material that is ejected into the interstellar medium. The abundances derived from planetary nebula emission show the presence of a metallicity gradient within the disk of the Milky Way up to Galactocentric distances of ~10 kpc, which are consistent with findings from studies of different types of sources, including H II regions and young B-type stars. The radial dependence of these abundances further from the Galactic centre is in dispute.Aims.We aim to derive the abundances of neon, sulphur and argon from a sample of planetary nebulae towards the Galactic anti-centre, which represent the abundances of the clouds from which they were formed, as they remain unchanged throughout the course of stellar evolution. We then aim to compare these values with similarly analysed data from elsewhere in the Milky Way in order to observe whether the abundance gradient continues in the outskirts of our Galaxy.Methods.We have observed 23 planetary nebulae at Galactocentric distances of 8–21 kpc withSpitzerIRS. The abundances were calculated from infrared emission lines, for which we observed the main ionisation states of neon, sulphur, and argon, which are little affected by extinction and uncertainties in temperature measurements or fluctuations within the planetary nebula. We have complemented these observations with others from optical studies in the literature, in order to reduce or avoid the need for ionisation correction factors in abundance calculations.Results.The overall abundances of our sample of planetary nebulae in the Galactic anti-centre are lower than those in the solar neighbourhood. The abundances of neon, sulphur, and argon from these stars are consistent with a metallicity gradient from the solar neighbourhood up to Galactocentric distances of ~20 kpc, albeit with varying degrees of dispersion within the data.
