Generation of plasma from multiple targets by laser ion source for TIARA ion implanter

We investigated a laser ion source for use as an ion source for the ion implanter in Takasaki Ion Accelerators for Advanced Radiation Application to increase the number of ion species that can be produced and to enable rapid switching of ion species. Herein, we analyzed the charge state distribution of ions in a laser plasma generated through irradiation of graphite, titanium, copper, and tantalum targets with 30 mJ Nd:YAG laser to determine the particle number of low-charge ions per pulse at 1.1 m from the target. The particle number of singly charged ions could be increased by adjusting the laser power density. For carbon, titanium, and tantalum, the particle numbers were in the order of 1010 ions per pulse, whereas for copper, the particle numbers were in the order of 109, lower than for other target materials.

Effect of solenoidal magnetic field on ion charge state distribution in laser ion source

Applying a solenoidal magnetic field to a laser produced plasma is a method to increase the ion beam current supplied from a laser ion source to applications. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of the solenoid magnetic field on the charge state distribution of the ion beam extracted from the laser ion source. A plasma generated by a Nd: YAG laser was injected into the solenoid lens with a length of 25 mm. The current waveforms of ion beams extracted from the laser produced plasmas were measured as a function of solenoidal field strength. In addition, the variation of beam current waveforms for each charge state ion was investigated. The results indicated that the charge state distribution in the plasma was kept after focusing by the solenoid magnetic field.

Application of a metallic-magnetic calorimeter for high-resolution x-ray spectroscopy of Fe at an EBIT

In this work, we present an experiment conducted at the S-EBIT-I ion trap of GSI. It involved the study of ion-electron collisions of Fe and Ba ions in various charge states with the electron beam. Characteristic x-ray radiation emitted during the continuous interaction was recorded utilizing an energy-dispersive maXs-30 detector based on metallic-magnetic calorimeter (MMC) technology. Optimizations to the applied sensitivity-drift correction and energy calibration procedures significantly improved the achieved energy resolution compared to previous applications of a similar detector. This made it possible to individually resolve and identify overlapping x-ray lines of iron and barium in a wide spectral range. As a demonstration of the outstanding detector performance, we used the recorded spectral data to extract an estimate of the charge state distribution of Fe ions in the trap. This experiment campaign marks an important milestone in the ongoing effort to enable the deployment of MMC detectors for future high-precision measurements in fundamental physics experiments.

Investigations on MoS2 plasma by IR pulsed laser irradiation in high vacuum

Abstract MoS2 targets were irradiated by Infra-Red (IR) pulsed laser in a high vacuum to determine hot plasma parameters, atomic, molecular and ion emission, and angular and charge state distributions. In this way, pulsed laser deposition (PLD) of thin films on graphene oxide substrates was also realized. A Nd:YAG laser, operating at the 1064 nm wavelength with a 5 ns pulse duration and up to a 1 J pulse energy, in a single pulse or at a 10 Hz repetition rate, was employed. Ablation yield was measured as a function of the laser fluence. Plasma was characterized using different analysis techniques, such as time-of-flight measurements, quadrupole mass spectrometry and fast CCD visible imaging. The so-produced films were characterized by composition, thickness, roughness, wetting ability, and morphology. When compared to the MoS2 targets, they show a slight decrease of S with respect to Mo, due to higher ablation yield, low fusion temperature and high sublimation in vacuum. The pulsed IR laser deposited MoSx (with 1 < x < 2) films are uniform, with a thickness of about 130 nm, a roughness of about 50 nm and a higher wettability than the MoS2 targets. Some potential applications of the pulsed IR laser-deposited MoSx films are also presented and discussed.

Fullerene C20 carbon nucleation induced by IR ns pulsed laser-generated plasma

Intense laser pulses can be employed to generate plasma, carbon aggregates, and nanoparticles. The plasma produced by ns laser pulses impinging on carbon targets in a vacuum generates carbon vapors, atoms nucleation and growth of nano aggregates. Mass quadrupole spectrometry has permitted to analyze the mass of the carbon atoms and molecules produced in a vacuum by laser-generated plasma, discovering that the fullerene C20 and other small carbon aggregates have a high probability of being produced. In this paper, the conditions of C20 aggregate synthetization are presented, and their yield generation is approximately evaluated. It also calculated the process ablation yield, the maximum carbon energy acquired in the plasma, the plasma temperature and density, the adiabatic plasma expansion velocity, and the carbon ion charge state distributions. To this, measurements of time-of-flight (TOF) of ions have been performed using suitable ion collectors and ion energy analyzers.

Kinetic energy distributions of atomic ions from disintegration of argon containing nanoclusters in moderately intense nanosecond laser fields: Coulomb explosion or hydrodynamic expansion.

We report kinetic energies (KE) of multiply charged atomic ions (MCAI) from interactions of moderately intense nanosecond lasers at 532 nm with argon containing clusters, including neat and doped clusters with a trace amount of trichlorobenzene. We develop a mathematical method to retrieve speed and thereby kinetic energy information from analyzing the time-of-flight profiles of the MCAI. This method should be generally applicable in detections of energetic charged particles with high velocities, a realm where velocity map imaging is inadequate. From this analysis, we discover that the KE of MCAI from doped clusters demonstrates a quadratic dependence on the charge of the atomic ions, while for neat clusters, the dependence is cubic. This result confirms the nature of the cluster disintegration process to be dominated by Coulomb explosion. This result bears more similarity to reports from extreme vacuum ultraviolet (EUV) fields with similar intensities, than to reports from near infrared (NIR) intense laser fields. However, the charge state distribution from our experiment is the opposite: we observe more higher charge state ions than reported in EUV fields, and our charge state distribution is actually similar to those reported in NIR fields. We also report a significant effect of the external electric field on the charge state distribution of the atomic ions: the presence of an electric field can significantly increase the charge from the atomic ions, as shown by a three-fold reduction in the average kinetic energy per charge. Although molecular dynamics simulations have been implemented for experiments in the EUV and NIR, our results allude to the need of a concerted effort in this regime of moderately intense nanosecond laser fields. The significant decrease in charge state distribution and the significant increase in KE from doped clusters, compared with neat clusters, is a telltale sign that the true interaction time between the laser field and the cluster may be substantially shorter than the duration of the laser, a welcome relief for molecular dynamics simulations.

Native and compactly folded in-solution conformers of pepsin are revealed and distinguished by mass spectrometric ITEM-TWO analyses of gas-phase pepstatin A - pepsin complex binding strength differences.

Pepsin, because of its optimal activity at low acidic pH, has gained importance in mass spectrometric proteome research as a readily available and easy-to-handle protease. Pepsin has also been study object of protein higher-order structure analyses, but questions about how to best investigate pepsin in-solution conformers still remain. We first determined dependencies of pepsin ion charge structures on solvent pH which indicated the in-solution existence of (a) natively folded pepsin (N) which by nanoESI-MS analysis gave rise to a narrow charge state distribution with an 11-fold protonated most intense ion signal, (b) unfolded pepsin (U) with a rather broad ion charge state distribution whose highest ion signal carried 25 protons, and (c) a compactly folded pepsin conformer (C) with a narrow charge structure and a 12-fold protonated ion signal in the center of its charge state envelope. Because pepsin is a protease, unfolded pepsin became its own substrate in solution at pH 6.6 since at this pH some portion of pepsin maintained a compact/native fold which displayed enzymatic activity. Subsequent mass spectrometric ITEM-TWO analyses of pepstatin A - pepsin complex dissociation reactions in the gas phase confirmed a very strong binding of pepstatin A by natively folded pepsin (N). ITEM-TWO further revealed the existence of two compactly folded in-solution pepsin conformers (Ca and Cb) which also were able to bind pepstatin A. Binding strengths of the respective compactly folded pepsin conformer-containing complexes could be determined and apparent gas phase complex dissociation constants and reaction enthalpies differentiated these from each other and from the pepstatin A - pepsin complex which had been formed from natively folded pepsin. Thus, ITEM-TWO turned out to be well suited to pinpoint in-solution pepsin conformers by interrogating quantitative traits of pepstatin A - pepsin complexes in the gas phase.

Ion-trapping properties of SCRIT: Time evolutions of 138Ba charge state distributions

We aim at evaluating time evolutions of charge state distributions of target ions in internal targets formed by the self-confining RI ion target (SCRIT) technique. The charge state distribution of the target ions is important for optimizing the SCRIT performance, because the number of target ions escaping from the SCRIT is increasing with decreasing the mass-to-charge ratio (A/q) of the target ions. To quantitatively evaluate the charge state distribution, we developed the E-scanning method that separates target ions by their A/q using a fixed magnetic field and a scanning electric field in the E×B velocity filter. Results in the measurements with 138Ba ions, the 138Ba1+∼7+ ions trapped in the SCRIT were identified clearly, and their time evolutions were observed for the first time at a trapping time of 30 ∼ 300 ms.

Experiment and simulation of generation of highly charged ions in a pulsed vacuum arc

A comparison is made of experimental results on the generation of multiply-charged bismuth ions in a vacuum arc plasma with a current pulse of half maximum width 2.5 μs and maximum amplitude 3 kA, and numerical simulation of the generation of multiply-charged bismuth ions in this plasma. Images of the luminous arc plasma were obtained experimentally with nanosecond exposure times at different times throughout the arc current pulse, and simultaneously the ion mass-to-charge composition of the plasma was measured at these times. It is shown that the generation of bismuth ions with charge states of 10+ and higher is associated with compression of the plasma column by its own azimuthal magnetic field, which occurs when the arc pulse current reaches its maximum value. Based on a hybrid hydrodynamic model, the spatial distributions of the arc plasma density, electron temperature, and charge state composition of plasma ions were calculated, which makes it possible to obtain a calculated image of the plasma glow. A comparison of the experimental ion charge-state distributions and photographs of the plasma glow with data obtained from the calculation shows good agreement, which theoretically confirms the generation of high charge state ions during pinching of the arc column.

Detailed composition of iron ions in interplanetary coronal mass ejections based on a multipopulation approach

Context. Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are extremely dynamical, large-scale events in which plasma – but not only the coronal plasma – is ejected into interplanetary space. If a CME is detected in situ by a spacecraft located in the interplanetary medium, it is then called an interplanetary coronal mass ejection (ICME). This solar activity has been studied widely since coronagraphs were first flown into space in the early 1970s. Aims. Charge states of heavy ions reflect important information about the coronal temperature profile due to the freeze-in effect and it is estimated that iron ions freeze in at heights of ∼5 solar radii. However, the measured charge-state distribution of iron ions cannot be composed of only one single group of plasma. To identify the different populations of iron charge-state composition of ICMEs and determine their sources, we developed a model that independently uses two, three, and four populations of iron ions to fit the measured charge-state distribution in ICMEs detected by the Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) at 1 AU. Methods. Three parameters are used to identify a certain population, namely freeze-in temperature, relative abundance, and kappa value (κ), which together describe the potential non-Maxwellian kappa distributions of coronal electrons. Our method chooses the reduced chi-squared to describe the goodness of fit of the model to the observations. The parameters of our model are optimized with the covariance-matrix-adaptation evolution strategy (CMA-ES). Results. Two major types of ICMEs are identified according to the existence of hot material, and both, that is, the cool type and the hot type, have two main subtypes. Different populations in those types have their own features related to freeze-in temperature and κ. The electron velocity distribution function usually contains a significant hot tail in typical coronal material and hot material, while the Maxwellian distribution appears more frequently in mid-temperature material. Our model is also suitable for all types of solar wind and the existence of hot populations as well as the change of temperatures of individual populations may indicate boundaries between ICMEs and individual solar wind streams.

The constraint of plasma power balance on runaway avoidance

In a post-thermal-quench plasma, mitigated or unmitigated, the plasma power balance is mostly between collisional or Ohmic heating and plasma radiative cooling. In a plasma of atomic mixture with α labeling the atomic species, the power balance sets the plasma temperature, ion charge state distribution with i the charge number, and through the electron temperature and ion charge state distribution the parallel electric field Since the threshold electric field for runaway avalanche growth is also set by the atomic mixture, ion charge state distribution and its derived quantity, the electron density the plasma power balance between Ohmic heating and radiative cooling imposes a stringent constraint on the plasma regime for avoiding and minimizing runaways when a fusion-grade tokamak plasma is rapidly terminated.

Laboratory magnetoplasmas as an ideal experimental environment for nuclear astrophysics β-decay studies

The PANDORA project proposes a new experimental approach aimed at using laboratory magnetoplasmas (which emulate some stellar conditions) as an environment for in-plasma β-decays investigations. In the superconducting PANDORA trap, a hot plasma containing a known concentration of β-decaying atoms can be confined and kept in dynamic equilibrium for weeks. The decay rate can be measured by detecting the γ-rays emitted by the daughter nuclei (through HPGe detector array) and correlated with the charge state distribution of radioactive ions and with the plasma thermodynamic properties using a multi-diagnostic system, whose tools and techniques are here presented.

Overview of Numerical Simulations for Calculating In-Plasma β-Decay Rates in the Framework of PANDORA Project

β-decay rates are essential inputs in stellar nucleosynthesis models to explain observed nuclear abundances. While current models continue to use terrestrial values, experiments in storage rings indicate strong divergence between decay rates of neutral and ionised atoms [1], necessitating renewed investigations into stellar decay rates. The PANDORA project aims at measuring lifetimes of specific radio-isotopes trapped in an ECR plasma (which mimics astrophysical environments to some extent) and compare them with theoretical predictions [2], consequently verifying the models and allowing decay rate estimation for any isotope in the stellar interior. We present here a simulation scheme to characterise the space-resolved charge state and level population distribution of buffer and radio-isotope ions in ECR ion sources in order to calculate in-plasma decay rates. The algorithm is based on a Particle-in-Cell Monte Carlo (PIC-MC) routine that simultaneously models charge transport with collision-radiative processes. Preliminary results from the simulation are also shown, along with important takeaways for code-optimisation.

Experimental setup for interaction between highly charged ions and laser-produced plasma near Bohr velocity energy region

Ion energy loss in the interaction between highly charged ions and dense plasma near Bohr velocity energy region is one of the important physical problems in the field of high-energy density physics driven by intense heavy ion beams. Based on the 320 kV experimental platform at the Institute of Modern Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, a new experimental setup was built for the research of interaction between ions and laser-produced plasma near the Bohr velocity, where the ion energy loss and charge state distribution can be experimentally investigated. In this paper we introduce the new setup in detail, including the generation and controlling of pulsed ion beam ( ≥ 200 ns); the preparation of high-density laser plasma target (10<sup>17</sup>—10<sup>21</sup> cm<sup>–3</sup>); the diagnostics of plasma and the developed high energy resolution ion measurement system (< 1%). In the experiment, the charge distribution of Xe<sup>15+</sup> ions with 4 MeV penetrating through the laser-produced Al plasma target is measured. The charge-state analysis device observes different results without and with the plasma, in which the outgoing Xe ion charge-state changes correspondingly from the 15+ to 10+, thus the electron capture process is believed to be dominant. In addition, the proton energy loss is also measured by using the magnetic spectrometer, showing that the experimental energy loss is about 2.0 keV, 30% higher than those theoretical predictions , which can be attributed to the fact that in the near Bohr velocity energy regime, the first-order Born approximation condition is not valid, thus the Bethe model and SSM model are inapplicable to the experimental results. In future, a systematic study will be performed based on our ions-plasma ineteraction setup, and the energy loss and charge state data will be introduced.

Charge state and Energy distribution of carbon ions and protons emitted from laser-produced graphite plasma

The energy and charge state distribution of atomic carbon ions, carbon cluster ions, and protons emitted during Q-switched Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm/6 ns) laser irradiation of high purity graphite target was investigated by employing a time of flight ion energy analyzer (TOF-IEA). Laser fluence on the target surface was varied from 2 to 26 J cm−2. At the lower fluence range (2–6 J cm−2), multiply charged low mass odd numbered cluster ions with n = 3, 5, 7 and charge state up to 5 + and carbon atomic ions up to the charge state of 3 + were detected. For the fluence greater than 6.4 J cm−2, carbon atomic ions up to a charge state of 6 + and protons were observed. The energy distribution of various carbon ions and protons was measured at the fluence of 5.1 and 25.5 J cm−2. At 5.1 J cm−2, the measured energy range for carbon cluster ions and carbon was 0.2–3.1 keV and 0.2–1.2 keV, respectively. At 25.5 J cm−2, the energy of carbon ions (q = 2–4) was in the range of 0.4–3.8 keV. Surprisingly, energetic protons with maximum energy of 1.5 keV and considerable intensity were detected at 25.5 J cm−2. The bi-component structure of ion energy distribution suggested a complex ion accelerating mechanism, which is discussed within the framework of the electrostatic model.

X-ray spectroscopy of laser produced Al plasma near the target surface in a laser ion source

The spatially resolved x-ray spectrum of a laser produced Al plasma near the target surface has been obtained in the energy range of 1.5–2.2 keV using a compact flat crystal spectrometer. The widely used temperature and density diagnostics, the line ratios of Lyα/Heβ and IC/Heα, were measured and compared with the calculation results of a steady-state collisional-radiative model so that the temperature and density profiles with a spatial resolution of 55 µm were obtained within 200 µm from the target plane. The plasma parameters derived from the spatially integrated spectrum were used to calculate the ionization state distribution near the target surface with the steady-state model, and the result was compared with the ion charge state distribution measured with an Electrostatic Ion Analyzer (EIA) at a distance of 4.2 m from the target surface. The validity of the steady-state model and the difference between the calculated ion charge state distribution and that measured with the EIA are discussed.

Modeling space-resolved ion dynamics in ECR plasmas for predicting in-plasma β-decay rates

Lifetimes of radioactive nuclei are known to be affected by the level configurations of their respective atomic shells. Immersing such isotopes in environments composed of energetic charged particles such as stellar plasmas can result in β-decay rates orders of magnitude different from those measured terrestrially. Accurate knowledge of the relation between plasma parameters and nuclear decay rates are essential for reducing uncertainties in present nucleosynthesis models, and this is precisely the aim of the PANDORA experiment. Currently, experimental evidence is available for fully stripped ions in storage rings alone, but the full effect of a charge state distribution (CSD) as exists in plasmas is only modeled theoretically. PANDORA aims to be the first to verify these models by measuring the β-decay rates of select isotopes embedded in electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) plasmas. For this purpose, it is necessary to consider the spatial inhomogeneity and anisotropy of plasma ion properties as well as the non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) nature of the system. We present here a 3D ion dynamics model combining a quasi-stationary particle-in-cell (PIC) code to track the motion of macroparticles in a pre-simulated electron cloud while simultaneously using a Monte Carlo (MC) routine to check for relevant reactions describing the ion population kinetics. The simulation scheme is robust, comprehensive, makes few assumptions about the state of the plasma, and can be extended to include more detailed physics. We describe the first results on the 3D variation of CSD of ions both confined and lost from the ECR trap, as obtained from the application of the method to light nuclei. The work culminates in some perspectives and outlooks on code optimization, with a potential to be a powerful tool not only in the application of ECR plasmas but for fundamental studies of the device itself.

Design study of a HPGe detector array for β-decay investigation in laboratory ECR plasmas

In the frame of the PANDORA project, a new experimental approach aims at measuring in-plasma β-decay rate as a function of thermodynamical conditions of the environment, namely a laboratory magnetized plasma able to mimic some stellar-like conditions. The decay rates (expected to change dramatically as a function of the ionization state) will be measured as a function of the charge state distribution of the in-plasma ions. The new experimental approach aims at correlating the plasma environment and the decay rate. This can be performed by simultaneously identifying and discriminating—through an innovative multi-diagnostic system working synergically with a γ-ray detection system —the photons emitted by the plasma and γ-rays emitted after the isotope β-decay. In this study, the numerical simulations supporting the design of the γ-ray detector array, including a statistical significance study to check the feasibility of measuring the in-plasma decay rates, are presented. Geant4 simulations focused on the design of the array of γ-ray detectors and the evaluation of total efficiency depending on the detector type and the optimal displacement of detectors around the trap (including collimation systems and shielding). The simulation results showed that, due to technical limitations in the number of apertures that can be created in the magnetic trap, the best compromise is to use 14 HPGe (70% of relative efficiency) detectors surrounding the magnetic trap. The HPGe detectors were chosen for their excellent energy resolution (0.2% @ 1 MeV), since the harsh environment (the background is represented by the intense plasma self-emission) strongly affects the signal-to-background ratio. Once determined the total photopeak efficiency (0.1–0.2%), the sensitivity of the PANDORA experiment was checked in a “virtual experimental run,” by exploring the measurability of isotope decay rates for the first three physical cases of PANDORA: 176Lu, 134Cs and 94Nb. The preliminary results demonstrated the feasibility of the measurement in terms of the signal-to-background ratio and significance that it is possible to reach. The results indicated that experimental run durations could take from several days to 3 months, depending on the isotope under investigation, thus shedding new light on the role of weak interactions in stellar nucleosynthesis.

Investigation of Charge-State-Dependent Compaction of Protein Ions with Native Ion Mobility-Mass Spectrometry and Theory.

The precise relationship between native gas-phase protein ion structure, charge, desolvation, and activation remains elusive. Much evidence supports the Charge Residue Model for native protein ions formed by electrospray ionization, but scaling laws derived from it relate only to overall ion size. Closer examination of drift tube CCSs across individual native protein ion charge state distributions (CSDs) reveals deviations from global trends. To investigate whether this is due to structure variation across CSDs or contributions of long-range charge-dipole interactions, we performed in vacuo force field molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of multiple charge conformers of three proteins representing a variety of physical and structural features: β-lactoglobulin, concanavalin A, and glutamate dehydrogenase. Results from these simulated ions indicate subtle structure variation across their native CSDs, although effects of these structural differences and long-range charge-dependent interactions on CCS are small. The structure and CCS of smaller proteins may be more sensitive to charge due to their low surface-to-volume ratios and reduced capacity to compact. Secondary and higher order structure from condensed-phase structures is largely retained in these simulations, supporting the use of the term "native-like" to describe results from native ion mobility-mass spectrometry experiments, although, notably, the most compact structure can be the most different from the condensed-phase structure. Collapse of surface side chains to self-solvate through formation of new hydrogen bonds is a major feature of gas-phase compaction and likely occurs during the desolvation process. Results from these MD simulations provide new insight into the relationship of gas-phase protein ion structure, charge, and CCS.
