Iodine hyperfine structure and absolute frequency measurements at 565, 576, and 585 nm

The hyperfine structure splittings of the P(10)14-1, R(15)14-1, and R(99)15-1 transitions at 585nm, P(62)17-1 at 576nm, and P(80)21-1 at 565nm in 127I2 are measured by heterodyne spectroscopy using two dye lasers. In addition, the absolute frequencies of the hyperfine components P(10)14-1 a15 and P(80)21-1 a10 are determined using a self-referenced frequency comb. These frequencies are used in an experiment testing relativistic time dilation by laser spectroscopy on a fast ion beam.

Iodine stabilization of a diode laser in the optical communication band

The iodine molecule has frequently been used as a frequency reference from the green to the near-infrared wavelength region (500-900 nm). We describe the frequency locking of the second-harmonic signal of a 197.2-THz (1520.25-nm) distributed-feedback diode laser to the absorption lines of the iodine hyperfine structure; a frequency jitter below 0.1 MHz was achieved at a 300-ms time constant. This scheme provides a simple, compact, and high-performance frequency reference in the optical communication band.

The Iodine Hvperfine Structure in the Microwave Spectrum of Ethyl Iodide: Nuclear Quadrupole and Spin Rotation Coupling

Abstract Some rotational transitions of ethyl iodide, CH3CH2I, have been reinvestigated by microwave Fourier transform (MWFT) spectroscopy. The iodine hyperfine structure splittings were first ana lyzed using a direct diagonalization procedure of the complete quadrupole Hamiltonian matrix. The results of this analysis showed deviations from our measurements up to 60 kHz. A new analysis using additional spin rotation coupling matrix elements reproduces our measurements within the experi­mental error limit and decreases the standard deviation of the least squares fit from 28 kHz to only 4 kHz.

Comparison of the 127I2-Stabilized He-Ne Lasers at 633 nm Wavelength of the Czechoslovak Institute of Metrology and the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures

The results of a comparison between iodine-stabilized He-Ne lasers of the CSMU and of the BIPM are presented. A successive-difference two-probe standard deviation ⟨ σ2 (2, τ) ⟩1/2 of 1 × 10-12 at τ = 100 s and a mean frequency difference between the CSMU lasers and the BIPM laser of about 10 kHz (2 × 10-11) with a standard deviation of 2.0 kHz have been obtained. The linear coefficients of the modulation and pressure shifts correspond to published values. The frequency differences between fourteen iodine hyperfine structure components have been determined.

Helium–neon laser stabilized by saturated absorption in iodine at 612 nm

Hyperfine structure of iodine has been studied at 612 nm by the technique of saturated absorption in an iodine cell placed in a He-Ne laser modified to operate at this wavelength. The most interesting feature of the laser is the existence of strong inverted Lamb dips at a very low vapor pressure, which provides very good short term frequency stability. Some factors which limit the reproducibility of the device are also investigated.

Zeeman Effect in the Hyperfine Structure of Iodine. II

Observations of the Zeeman effect in the hyperfine structure of iodine II lines at fields of 4000 to 16,000 gauss provide an independent confirmation of the value 2\textonehalf{} units as the spin of the iodine nucleus. The patterns observed in intermediate fields have been interpreted with the help of the theory of Goudsmit and Bacher. Evidence of a nuclear quadrupole interaction is detected in some Zeeman patterns.
