Plastic in the Environment: A Modern Type of Abiotic Stress for Plant Physiology.

In recent years, plastic pollution has become a growing environmental concern: more than 350 million tons of plastic material are produced annually. Although many efforts have been made to recycle waste, a significant proportion of these plastics contaminate and accumulate in the environment. A central point in plastic pollution is demonstrated by the evidence that plastic objects gradually and continuously split up into smaller pieces, thus producing subtle and invisible pollution caused by microplastics (MP) and nanoplastics (NP). The small dimensions of these particles allow for the diffusion of these contaminants in farmlands, forest, freshwater, and oceans worldwide, posing serious menaces to human, animal, and plant health. The uptake of MPs and NPs into plant cells seriously affects plant growth, development, and photosynthesis, finally limiting crop yields and endangering natural environmental biodiversity. Furthermore, nano- and microplastics-once adsorbed by plants-can easily enter the food chain, being highly toxic to animals and humans. This review addresses the impacts of MP and NP particles on plants in the terrestrial environment. In particular, we provide an overview here of the detrimental effects of photosynthetic injuries, oxidative stress, ROS production, and protein damage triggered by MN and NP in higher plants and, more specifically, in crops. The possible damage at the physiological and environmental levels is discussed.

Invisible pollution and hypertension: Evidence from the aging population in China

Hypertension, a prevalent health concern within China's aging population, is the focal point of this study. The aim is to draw causal conclusions on the impact of ozone pollution on hypertension incidence and blood pressure elevation, using an instrumental variable derived from the wind-borne long-distance transmission of ozone. The findings suggest a causal effect of ozone on blood pressure and hypertension incidence; a one-part-per-billion increase in the ambient ozone level during the preceding four months causes a rise in systolic and diastolic blood pressure (0.5281 mmHg and 0.3796 mmHg, respectively), and a 0.52 percentage point surge in hypertension incidence. These effects are potentially due to physiological and behavioral factors, including elevated inflammation and oxidative stress, increased obesity rates, and reduced sleep duration. Importantly, this study emphasizes the substantial health benefits achievable through ozone pollution control. A one-standard-deviation decrease in ozone concentration could potentially result in an estimated reduction of 28.13 million hypertensive older adult patients by mid-century, consequently lowering medical expenditure by approximately 3.83 billion USD.

Multi-technological integration in a smelting site: Visualizing pollution characteristics and migration pattern

Heavy metal(loid)s pollution of industrial legacies has become a severe environmental issue worldwide. Linking soil pollution to groundwater contaminant plumes would make invisible pollution features visible across the site, but related studies are lacking and require the convergence of multiple technologies. This study uniformly managed the soil and groundwater data in a 3D visualization model to pellucidly assess the spatial distribution of critical contaminants beyond simple drilling information. The distribution of Pb, Zn, As, and Cd in soil-groundwater system has a strong correlation to historical production, substance type, soil property, and groundwater flow direction. Over 2600 measurements of High-density electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) data were used to guarantee the exactness of soil structures. Hydraulic conductivity showed a strongest correlation (R2 = 0.86), yielding a calibrated model to reveal the anisotropic and contaminant transport in the region, with the consequent minimize the drilling tests. This study provides a template for the description of a verifiable scenario of hydrogeological conditions and pollution characteristics at smelting sites, coupled with traditional exploration and non-invasive techniques. The findings highlight the significance of visualizing the internal state of the soil-groundwater system under consideration, thus providing a basis for targeted control measures against site contamination.

Environmentally Friendly Approach to the Reduction of Microplastics during Domestic Washing: Prospects for Machine Vision in Microplastics Reduction.

The increase in the global population is directly responsible for the acceleration in the production as well as the consumption of textile products. The use of textiles and garment materials is one of the primary reasons for the microfibers generation and it is anticipated to grow increasingly. Textile microfibers have been found in marine sediments and organisms, posing a real threat to the environment as it is invisible pollution caused by the textile industry. To protect against the damaging effects that microplastics can have, the formulation of mitigation strategies is urgently required. Therefore, the primary focus of this review manuscript is on finding an environmentally friendly long-term solution to the problem of microfiber emissions caused by the domestic washing process, as well as gaining an understanding of the various properties of textiles and how they influence this problem. In addition, it discussed the effect that mechanical and chemical finishes have on microfiber emissions and identified research gaps in order to direct future research objectives in the area of chemical finishing processes. In addition to that, it included a variety of preventative and minimizing strategies for reduction. Last but not least, an emphasis was placed on the potential and foreseeable applications of machine vision (i.e., quantification, data storage, and data sharing) to reduce the amount of microfibers emitted by residential washing machines.

Microfiber Emissions from Functionalized Textiles: Potential Threat for Human Health and Environmental Risks.

The growing worldwide population is directly responsible for the increased production and consumption of textile products. One of the key reasons for the generation of microfibers is the use of textiles and garment materials, which is expected to increase. The textile industry is responsible for the invisible pollution that is created by textile microfibers, which have been detected in marine sediments and organisms. The present review paper demonstrates that the microfibers discharged from functionalized textiles exhibit non-biodegradable characteristics and that a considerable proportion of them possess toxic properties. This is primarily attributed to the impact of textiles' material functionalization on their biodegradability. The potential for these microfibers, which are released from textiles that contain a variety of dyes, toxic chemicals, and nanomaterials, to pose a variety of health risks to both humans and other living organisms is discussed in this paper. In addition, this paper covers a wide variety of preventative and minimizing measures for reduction, which are discussed in terms of several phases ranging from sustainable production through the consumer, end of life, domestic washing, and wastewater treatment phases.

The electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of the copper plated nonwoven fabric and its’ related comfort properties

With the rapid development of modern science and technology, a kind of invisible pollution named electromagnetic radiation has increasingly attracted the attention of all sectors of society. Therefore, electromagnetic shielding protective clothing is widely used by people for daily life and work. More and more scholars and researchers are paying attention to this research direction, and they have done a series of related research on how to improve the electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of clothing materials. At the same time, the related comfort properties of these clothing materials should also be concerned because they will greatly affect the wearer’s experience. This study evaluated the related comfort properties of a kind of copper-plated nonwoven materials with different electromagnetic shielding effectiveness, including air permeability, water vapor permeability, and thermal resistance. The result shows that electromagnetic shielding effectiveness is positively related to the amount of plated copper based on this kind of copper plating method. Other experiment results display that air permeability and water vapor permeability of this kind of material are negatively related to its electromagnetic shielding effectiveness. On the contrary, their thermal resistance is positively related to their electromagnetic shielding effectiveness. In addition to the above, it also found that air permeability and water vapor permeability have a positive correlation with optical porosity, and thermal resistance has a positive correlation with volume porosity.

Microplastic Characterization in Soil Samples in Urban and Rural Areas of Eskişehir

Plastics, which are widely used in daily life, are preferred in many areas from the construction sector to the textile sector due to some of their features such as ease of processing and being economical. Nearly 9 million tons of plastic have been produced so far, most of which is emitted as pollution. These plastics, which turn into particles smaller than 5 mm called "microplastic" by exposure to some physical effects such as sunlight, wind and waves, increase pollution due to their smaller size and densities and spread to much wider areas. Microplastics, which can be formed by the disintegration of large-sized plastics, threaten the living and non-living environment with their non-degradable structures. The severity of microplastic pollution, which can be defined as invisible pollution, should be better understood and awareness should be raised about the impact of its negative consequences. The aim of this study is to reveal the microplastic pollution in soil environments of rural and urban areas in Eskişehir. In the study, soil samples taken from urban and rural areas were visually analyzed. As a result, it was observed that the microplastic density was higher in urban samples. In addition, by visual analysis of microplastics, it was determined that the most common type was fiber type, and black colored microplastics were seen most frequently.

AbstractIn the face of technology failures in preventing oil from reaching beaches and coasts after catastrophic oil spills in the 1960s and early 1970s, the oil industry and governmental officials needed to quickly reconsider their idea of prevention. Initially, prevention meant stopping spilled oil from coating beaches and coasts. Exploring the presentations at three oil-spill conferences in 1969, 1971 and 1973, this idea of prevention changed as the technological optimism of finding effective methods met the realities of oil-spill cleanup. By 1973, prevention meant stopping oil spills before they happened. This rapid policy transformation came about because the oil industry could not hide the visual evidence of the source of their technology failures. In this century, as policymakers confront invisible pollutants such as pesticides and greenhouse gases, considering ways to visually show the source of the pollution along with the effects could quicken policy decisions.

Invisible pollutants: environmental, economic and social impacts as a threat to water quality

The object of this study is a discussion on the environmental, social and economic impacts of invisible pollutants as a threat to water quality and sustainability. The investigation is geared towards contributing to effective sustainability, taking into account its threat by invisible pollutants and the fact that these pollutants are not included in routine monitoring programs of Health and Environmental bodies, nor are they incorporated to standards or legislation for environmental control. The work was then divided, and it first analyzes the importance of water quality in the attainment of sustainability. Next, it analyzes the Brazilian law on water resources; and finally, it discusses the challenges to maintain the quality of water considering the environmental, social and economic impacts of invisible pollutants. After detailed study, it is perceived that the reason for concern is that these minuscule molecules are resistant to conventional water treatment processes. They can even become increasingly toxic and pollute the noblest resource: water. For this reason, water, even after treatment, can still contain residual contaminants which, after reaching their concentration limits, become toxic and change aquatic communities. This is a critical situation, since all impacts of these molecules are still not entirely known.

Can young students think systemically about the environment? The case of pollution

ABSTRACTThis paper reports on the thoughts 6-year-olds and 9-year-olds have related to the serious issue of air and sea pollution. More specifically, twenty seven 6-year-olds and thirty 9-year-olds attending two state schools in Volos, a small provincial town in Greece participated in the research which assessed the students’ competence to think systemically about dealing with pollution. The study sheds light on whether students are able to identify interrelations between the components of pollution, and clarifies the mental models they hold. Data was collected through drawings and interviews, subsequent analysis of which indicates that students appeared to hold two mental models related to pollution; pollution is connected both spatially and temporally with visible pollutants; and, pollution is connected indirectly with invisible pollutants. The students seemed to exhibit a kind of systemic thinking, which was done unconsciously to a certain degree. Thus it is a challenge for education to enhance students’ systemic thinking in an attempt to bring it to a more conscious level, which will assist them to reconstruct their mental models of pollution.

A presente pesquisa tem por escopo a análise e reflexão sobre a importância do pensamento complexo para avaliar as diversas formas de poluição invisível, a fim de que o biodireito e a bioética atuem para melhor regulamentar os direitos humanos fundamentais, à vida, à saúde, à dignidade do homem e das demais formas de vida. Este estudo propõe introduzir a complexidade como novo paradigma, novo olhar, instrumento essencial para a sociedade de risco imersa nas mais diversas incertezas científicas. Para alcançar tal objetivo, o presente trabalho busca trazer os pressupostos teóricos, investigando o problema a partir da revisão bibliográfica.

Invisible Pollution: The Impact of Pharmaceuticals in the Water Supply

During the past decade, interest in the public and environmental health effects of trace levels of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in the water supply has evolved. Although most pharmaceuticals are tested for human safety and efficacy prior to marketing and distribution, the potential for adverse effects in nontarget populations exposed to minute environmental medication doses has not been established. Several recent studies have demonstrated adverse effects from longstanding, low-dose exposures in both aquatic and terrestrial wildlife, although human toxicity related to trace levels of pharmaceuticals in the water supply remains unknown. This article provides a brief overview of the routes through which pharmaceuticals are introduced into the environment; a description of the effects of longstanding, low-dose exposures in aquatic and terrestrial animals, including human health effects; an update on the current regulations and solutions regarding pharmaceutical disposal practices; and a discussion of implications for reducing pharmaceuticals in the environment for occupational health nurses and other allied health professionals.

Lessons to be learnt from epidemiological studies in radiation-exposed people

The research into the cancer risk posed by radioactive pollution played a pilot role in changing our awareness of long-term health damage from invisible pollution of the environment. Most paradigms, concepts and methods of environmental research used today have been developed in the course of those large scale epidemiological studies such as questions relating to latency, type of cancer, genetic susceptibility and relationship between exposure level and risk. The use of AVHRR data to determine the concentration of visible and invisible tropospheric pollutants originating from a 1997 forest fire in Southeast Asia

A massive forest fire in Indonesia in 1997 affected the whole Asian region by producing a large smoke plume, with Malaysia bearing the brunt due to the wind direction and weather conditions and because of its proximity to the source. The five primary fire produced pollutants were carbon monoxide (CO), sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3) and particulate matter less than 10 µm (PM10). The first four of these are, of course, invisible to conventional satellite-flown multispectral scanners operating in the visible and near infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The fifth, PM10, is present in the haze and therefore makes an observable contribution to the signal received by the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR). The haze in AVHRR channels 1 and 2 data for the fires of September 1997 has been used to study the concentration of PM10 directly. It has also been used to study the concentration indirectly--as a tracer or surrogate--for the four remaining materials, the gases CO, SO2, NO2 and O3. Data from ground observations have been used to calibrate the results and the distributions of the fire pollutants over Peninsular Malaysia have been plotted.
