Solidification and microstructure investigation on as-cast and annealed hypoeutectic Ti–Fe alloys

This work explored the solidification behavior, microstructure development, and resulting mechanical properties of hypoeutectic Ti–Fe alloys under both as-cast and annealed conditions. Ti-(27, 28, 29)Fe (wt%) alloys were synthesized through arc-melting, followed by annealing at 950 °C for 24 h and slow furnace cooling. The investigation procedures included thermodynamic calculations, differential scanning calorimetry, scanning electron microscopy, high-temperature laser-scanning confocal microscopy, X-ray diffraction, hardness measurements, and compression tests. The study demonstrated the efficacy of annealing treatments in reducing excess eutectic in the as-cast structure formed during solidification. Results from both thermodynamic calculation and experiment for the solidification process demonstrated reasonable agreement. The high β-stabilizing effect of Fe ensured the presence of the β phase at room temperature under both studied conditions. The solid-solution hardening of the β phase, coupled with the TiFe intermetallic, substantially contributed to the increased hardness and mechanical strength, although the increase in brittleness was noticeable in the as-cast state. Subsequent annealing enhanced plasticity but resulted in a reduction in strength, albeit maintaining yield strength at a considerable level, approximately 1450 MPa.

Microstructural Observations on the Durability of Stabilized Rammed Earth

This study provides a qualitative microstructural investigation of fly ash geopolymers' role in rammed earth's durability against water ingress and contact erosion. A series of SEM (scanning electron microscopy) images were captured on geopolymer-stabilized as well as unstabilized rammed earth samples. These samples were fabricated from predefined amounts of sand and fine materials together with fly ash geopolymers in the laboratory by static compaction to 25 MPa inside rigid molds. Two standardized durability tests were performed, namely, the dip test and the spray (also known as erosion) test. The results of these tests reflected excellent durability properties (practically zero erosion) of the stabilized material. The microscopic investigation provided an insight into the reason behind this improvement, where geopolymer networks inhabited the macro and micro pores and served as a cementing agent interconnecting the earthen materials’ grains. On the contrary, grains of the unstabilized material were weakly bonded by the clay component of the mixture, as observed with the SEM images; therefore, they were more susceptible to erosion by water.

Sustainable self-Compacting concrete with marble slurry and fly ash: Statistical modeling, microstructural investigations, and rheological characterization

The escalating generation of marble waste and the substantial carbon footprint associated with cement production pose significant environmental challenges. Thus, by substituting fly ash for supplementary cementitious material and using leftover marble waste for fine aggregate in concrete can reduce cost and carbon emissions that may lead to sustainable development. The presented paper aims to study the effect of partial substitution of marble slurry with natural fine aggregates and fly ash as supplementary cementitious material (SCM) on Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC). Polycarboxylate Ether (PCE) based superplasticizer (SP) was added in the concrete mix, to decrease the demand of higher water to binder (w/b) ratio. After developing SCC, fresh state properties and compressive strength (CS) at the curing age of 7 and 28 days were evaluated. To maximize the utilization of marble slurry and fly ash, mixture optimization was performed using the Box-Behnken Design (BBD), a robust technique within the response surface methodology (RSM) framework. Rheological analysis was performed to analyse the fresh state behaviour of the SCC with the help of the Bingham and Modified Bingham (MB) models. Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies were also carried out to study the behaviour of the marble slurry and fly ash in the concrete. Carbon emission and cost analysis of SCC was evaluated at different replacement level of the marble slurry and fly ash. It was inferred that marble slurry and fly ash can be used in the certain percentages without compromising any strengthen and flowability properties of the SCC. The rheological behaviour also confirmed that linear and nonlinear behaviour of SCC in the certain mix proportion may results in the formation of the stable SCC. The analysis of cost and carbon emission confirmed that sustainable SCC mixture achieved substantial reductions of 21.44 % in cost and a remarkable 47.71 % decrease in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions compared to conventional concrete.

Microstructural evolution and investigation of mechanical properties of Al 7055 –Nano Si3N4 composites

In this paper an attempt has been made to develop the aluminium based metal matrix composites. Al7055 were chosen as base material and hard ceramic particulate nano silicon nitride as reinforcement. The composites were fabricated by using bottom pouring stir casting technique by varying weight percentage of Si3N4 in steps of (3 wt%, 6 wt% & 9 wt%) respectively and particle size of 30, 60 and 90nm. Morphological characterization of composites was conducted by using HRFESEM. The SEM result reveals that there is homogeneous distribution between the matrix and reinforcement. EDS mapping for prepared composites were done to identify the presence of alloying elements and phase distribution. XRD analysis is conducted for validation of the structural composition. Mechanical tests like tensile, micro Vickers hardness and impact test were performed on developed composites. The ultimate tensile strength of the composites at 9 wt% and particle size of 90 nm found to be diminishing due to severe agglomeration. The hardness value increases at 9 wt% and particle size of 30 nm. The toughness of the composites increased at 30 nm reinforcement size and 6 wt% as compared to higher weight percentage developed composites. Corrosion test were conducted as per ASTM G31 by weight loss method for different samples by dipping composite samples in 50 g Hcl solution for duration of 6 h and it was found that the corrosion resistance of the composites was higher while increasing the wt% of Si3N4 as compared to base matrix..

Tailored gradient nanocrystallization in bulk metallic glass via ultrasonic vibrations

To advance materials with superior performance, the construction of gradient structures has emerged as a promising strategy. In this study, a gradient nanocrystalline-amorphous structure was induced in Zr46Cu46Al8 bulk metallic glass (BMG) through ultrasonic vibration (UV) treatment. Applying a 20 kHz ultrasonic cyclic loading in the elastic regime, controllable gradient structures with varying crystallized volume fractions can be achieved in less than 2 s by adjusting the input UV energy. In contrast to traditional methods of inducing structural gradients in BMGs, this novel approach offers distinct advantages: it is exceptionally rapid, requires minimal stress, and allows for easy tuning of the extent of structural gradients through precise adjustment of processing parameters. Nanoindentation tests reveal higher hardness near the struck surface, attributed to a greater degree of nanocrystal formation, which gradually diminishes with depth. As a result of the gradient dispersion of nanocrystals, an increased plasticity was found after UV treatment, characterized by the formation of multiple shear bands. Microstructural investigations suggest that UV-induced nanocrystallization originates from local atomic rearrangements in phase-separated Cu-rich regions with high diffusional mobility. Our study underscores the tunability of structural gradients and corresponding performance improvements in BMGs through ultrasonic energy modulation, offering valuable insights for designing advanced metallic materials with tailored mechanical properties.

Effect of V content on the microstructure and mechanical properties of HPT nanostructured CoCrFeMnNiVx high entropy alloys

The paper presents investigations of microstructure and low‐temperature mechanical properties of nanostructured alloys CoCrFeMnNiVx (x = 0.15 – 0.75), processed by high‐pressure torsion (HPT) at temperatures of 300 and 77 K. While at × ≥ 0.5 the values of microhardness (Hv) and compression yield stress (σ0.2) in samples after HPT at 77 K are larger than those in samples after HPT at 300 K, for × ≤ 0.2 surprisingly the opposite effect is observed. As in case of the undeformed CoCrFeMnNiVx alloys, the behaviour for vanadium concentrations × ≥ 0.5 can be related to the formation of tetragonal σ‐phase in addition to fcc matrix, while the anomalous behaviour for × ≤ 0.2 arises from the formation of HPT‐induced hexagonal martensitic phase. In the low temperature ranges, i.e. 20 – 300 K in case of HPT nanostructured CoCrFeMnNiV0.2, and 150 – 300 K in case of HPT nanostructured CoCrFeMnNiV0.5, dependences of σ0.2(T) show characteristics of thermally‐activated dislocation movement. For the first time in HEAs ‐ anomalous dependences of σ0.2(T) at temperatures 4.2 – 20 K for CoCrFeMnNiV0.2, and at 80 – 150 K for CoCrFeMnNiV0.5 are found which indicate at the occurrence of non‐thermal inertial dislocation movement.This article is protected by copyright. Boronizing of Monel K500 alloy: Microstructural characterization and modeling of boron diffusion

In this study, the thermochemical treatments were carried out using the powder-pack boronizing method at temperatures ranging from 1123 K to 1223 K for durations of 2 to 6 h, with the aim of improving the surface properties of Monel K500 alloy. Microstructural investigation of the boride layers, conducted using optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), revealed a needle-like layer structure with high porosity homogeneously distributed on the surface. The results of XRD analysis showed that the boride layer contained different nickel borides (Ni2B, Ni3B, Ni4B3 and NiB12), iron borides (Fe2B and Fe3B) and complex borides (Fe4.5Ni18.5B6 and Fe3Ni3B). The presence and amount of elements in the boride layer were determined by EDS analysis. This study focused mainly on diffusion kinetics studies of boronized Monel K500 alloy. Growth kinetics of the boride layer were investigated using three different approaches such as parabolic growth model, regression model and mean diffusion coefficient (MDC) model. Boron activation energy values were calculated and found to be quite similar, at 266.14 kJ mol−1 and 266.17 kJ mol−1 using the MDC model and parabolic growth model, respectively. These values were compared with similar results reported in the literature.

Systematic investigation of microstructure, distortion, mechanical and thermal properties of NiB and ZrB2-modified 90W-6Ni-4Co alloys

The present work focuses on the role of NiB and ZrB2 addition on density, structural evolution, mechanical and thermal properties of 90W-6Ni-4Co (wt%) heavy alloys. The investigated tungsten heavy alloys were sintered at 1485 °C and 1500 °C with a holding time of 75 min in H2 atmosphere. Compared to the base alloy 90W-6Ni-4Co, the NiB-substituted alloys showed improved densification at both sintering temperatures. An in-depth study of the phase and microstructure of the 1500 °C sintered samples was carried out. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the presence of ZrO2 in ZrB2 containing WHAs. Microstructural analysis affirms that ZrB2 incorporation attributes for grain size refinement in sintered alloys. Furthermore, the elephant foot formation in the sintered samples was avoided by incorporating NiB individually or in combination with ZrB2 dispersoids. The distortion parameter (δ) of the samples sintered at 1500 °C was found to be decreased from 24.83 (0 wt% ZrB2) to 6.36 (2 wt% ZrB2). On the other hand, the combined addition of NiB and ZrB2 provides better shape retention with δ=2.82 for the tungsten heavy alloys with 3 wt% NiB and 2 wt% ZrB2. The maximum compressive stress of ∼2000 MPa was obtained in the 89W-6Ni-4Co-1ZrB2 samples. The maximum and minimum bulk hardness of 432 ± 5 HV3 and 365 ± 9 HV3 was obtained for 88W-3Ni-3NiB-4Co-2ZrB2 and 90W-6Ni-4Co heavy alloys. The coefficient of thermal expansion of the 90W-6Ni-4Co alloy was found to be the highest (7.65 × 10−6 /°C), which was reduced to 7.1 × 10−6 /°C and 6.8 × 10−6 /°C with the incorporation of 1 and 2 wt% ZrB2 respectively. W-rich channels were noticed in the microstructure of 1500 °C sintered samples. Overall, W-Ni/NiB-Co-ZrB2 alloys are very effective in enhancing the mechanical properties and distortion behavior compared to W-Ni-Co alloys.

Nano-fly ash and clay for 3D-Printing concrete buildings: A fundamental study of rheological, mechanical and microstructural properties

Three-dimensional printing concrete (3DPC) represents a recent innovation in the construction and building research sector and novel approach to building techniques. The focus of this study is to develop an environmentally sustainable cementitious composite optimized for 3D printing applications. The research involved preparing 3D printing mixtures that comprised of 50 % Portland Cement (PC), 50 % Colorobia Clay (CC), and varying contents (0 % 5 %, 10 %, and 15 % by weight of cement) of Nano-Fly Ash (N-FA) under standardized printing parameters. The fresh mixture's properties have been evaluated and the mechanical and microstructural properties of the printed samples were assessed, subsequently. The findings demonstrated that incorporating N-FA into the cementitious mixes enhanced their flowability and workability. Specifically, the mix containing a low N-FA concentration of 5 wt% exhibited superior compressive strength relative to the other formulations. Additionally, flexural strength assessments indicated a minimum increase of 39.4 % across all mixes compared to the control 3D-printed mixture. Microstructural investigations by SEM imaging validated the anticipated formation of hydration products, namely calcium-silicate-hydrate (CSH) and ettringite, facilitated by the synergy between clay and fly ash. The t-statistical analysis further corroborated that the inclusion of N-FA significantly bolstered the strength attributes of the mixes designated for 3D printing. In conclusion, this study underscored the efficacy of integrating clay as a sustainable construction material within 3D printing applications. The utilization of clay-cement mixes, augmented with N-FA, emerged as a viable strategy to enhance the sustainability and reduce the carbon footprint of construction practices.

Microstructure and texture evolution in AZX311 Mg alloy during in-plane shear deformation

The current study examined the deformation mechanisms, microstructure, and texture evolution in AZX311 Mg alloy sheets subjected to in-plane shear (IPS) deformation. Different levels of shear strains, with values 0.05, 0.10, and 0.15, were applied along the rolling direction (RD) using a specialized in-plane shear testing jig. The strain measurement for the applied shear deformation was conducted utilizing the digital image correlation (DIC) technique. The strain distribution was found to be nearly homogeneous over sufficiently large areas, thereby allowing the microstructural measurements to yield relevant statistical data. A thorough microstructural examination across the thickness using electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD) revealed that the application of IPS strain led to the formation of a significant number of tensile twins (TTWs) in the sheet. This was evidenced by the emergence of two satellite peaks at the periphery of the pole figures. As the shear strain increased, the proportion of TTWs in the material also increased, encompassing the entire parent grain and leading to the formation of what has been termed as “all-twinned microstructure”. The microstructural and texture investigation after IPS deformation revealed that TTWs were the dominant deformation mechanism that defined the microstructure and texture under IPS deformation, while dislocation slip activity was dominated by prismatic slip, as evidenced by the resolved shear stress analysis in this study. Consequently, this research highlights the effect of IPS deformation on the microstructure and texture evolution throughout the thickness of an Mg alloy sheet and elucidates the underlying mechanisms.

Performance analysis of self compacting concrete by incorporating fly ash, coal gangue powder, cement kiln dust and recycled concrete powder by absolute volume method

To achieve environmental sustainability and improve material characteristics, this study examines the performance of self-compacting concrete (SCC) that incorporates different industrial by-products, including fly ash (FA), coal gangue powder (CGP), cement kiln dust (CKD), and recycled concrete powder (RCP). Through an experimental program, the research evaluates the fresh and hardened properties of SCC as well as its microstructural features. Slump flow, T50, and V-funnel tests were utilized to evaluate the fresh characteristics, while the compressive strength was the main emphasis of the hardened property at 7, 14, and 28 days of curing periods. To clarify the internal structure of the material and the pozzolanic processes taking place therein, further microstructural investigations were carried out using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Due to pozzolanic reactions and the densification of the microstructure, the results show that adding these industrial by-products not only makes SCC more workable but also gradually increases its compressive strength. In particular, the study shows that combinations with FA, CKD, and RCP perform better than CGP in terms of flowability and strength development. The results highlight the technical advantages of improving concrete qualities through material innovation, in addition to the possible environmental benefits of recycling waste materials in construction.

A study on the influence of impurity content on fatigue endurance in a 6082 Al-alloy

The paper investigates the influence of different impurity/scrap elements on the high cycle fatigue (HCF) properties of 6082 Al-alloy. Accordingly, HCF tests are carried out on the different variants- GA1, GA2 and GA3 (designed as a function of varying impurity content)- of this alloy, which resulted in a lower fatigue limit in GA2/GA3 compared to GA1. To explain such behavior, detailed fractographic and microstructural investigations are conducted which bring out that although the crack initiation and propagation modes are mostly transgranular irrespective of alloy variant and stress levels, intergranular crack initiation is promoted in GA2/GA3 at 150 MPa in contrast to occurrence of run-out in GA1 at the same stress level. This phenomenon is found to be facilitated by intermetallic particles anchoring the grain boundaries. These observations point out the possibility of strong sensitivity of stress and alloy variant (varying impurity content) to fatigue life. The difference in fatigue properties as a function of alloy variant could be attributed to the variation in initial microstructure/particle size distribution as well as the slip character. In light of these, a fracture mechanism map is generated which underlines the different mechanisms responsible for fatigue crack initiation among different alloy variants.

Exploring the feasibility of utilizing high plastic clays as an alternative material to bentonite clay in the production of ceramic tile: Advancing towards efficient life cycle cost

The environmental challenges and high cost of raw materials (i.e., bentonite clays) for the production of ceramic tiles raise concerns for the ceramic industry to look for alternative materials. Therefore, the current research aimed at exploring the possibility of using high plastic clays as a replacement for Bentonite clay in the manufacturing of ceramic tiles. Two different types of high plastic clay in different proportions (i.e. 0–5 %) were used in the preparation of ceramic tiles. A comprehensive material characterization, shrinkage, visual index, flexural strength, water absorption, and microstructural investigation was carried out. The results revealed that the incorporation of plastic clays RC1 from 1 % to 5 % showed a decrease in the flexural strength of ceramic tiles as compared to that of ceramic tiles with bentonite clay. The water absorption of ceramic tiles using RC1 increased with the incorporation of high plastic clays for high plastic clays. However, specimens with all replacements of bentonite clay with high plastic clays showed flexural strength greater than the minimum specified limit of ISO 10545-4. Moreover, it was observed that the replacement of bentonite clay with high plastic clays exhibited higher shrinkage. Further, the visual index of all the specimens did not show any sign of the presence of black core in the ceramic tiles incorporating high plastic clays. The life cycle assessment (LCA) was carried out for the possible utilization of high plastic clays in place of bentonite clay to produce ceramic tiles. The results showed that less than 5 % high plastic clay can effectively be used for manufacturing ceramic tiles leading to economical and sustainable construction products. Hence, it can be concluded that the high plastic clays can be utilized as an alternative to bentonite clay material for manufacturing sustainable ceramic tile leading to sustainable finishes in construction.

Impacts of Aramid Fiber (PPTA), Glass Wool (GW), Aluminum (Al), and Silicon Carbide (SiC) Particles on Mechanical Behavior of Epoxy Hybrid Composites and their Morphological Investigation

AbstractParticle‐reinforced polymer composites have figured prominently in technological appliances owing to their high mechanical modulus and strength. Due to the obvious demand for lighter but more resilient composites to substitute heavy metal parts, several investigations have been made into particle‐based composites. The current research investigates the impact of reinforcing aramid fiber (PPTA), glass wool (GW), aluminum (Al), and silicon carbide (SiC) powder into an epoxy matrix on aspects of mechanical and morphological characteristics. Hand lay‐up technology was performed to manufacture composites at five different degrees of reinforcement loading (5, 10, 20, 30, and 40 wt. %). SEM and optical microscopes were used for microstructural investigation in order to evaluate the cohesion and dispersion of the reinforcing particles across the matrix phase of the hybrid composites. The elongation at break, flexural strength, flexural modulus, and hardness of epoxy‐PPTA‐GW−Al‐SiC hybrid composites improved, whereas the tensile strength and impact strength decreased from 5 wt. % to 40 wt. % loading. Among fabricated hybrid composite compositions, the morphological and mechanical characteristics obtained at 40 wt. % PPTA, GW, Al, and SiC powder loading are the best among all others.

Performance of Sustainable Green Concrete Incorporating Quarry Dust and Ferronickel Slag as Fine Aggregate.

This paper presents a study on the combined use of two by-products, namely quarry dust (QD) and ferronickel slag (FNS), as a full substitute for natural sand to improve the greenness of concrete production. Quarry dust was used in increments of 25% to a maximum of 75% substitution, where nickel slag was used as the remaining proportion of fine aggregate. All the combinations of quarry dust and nickel slag were found to be compliant with AS 2758.1 and they showed notably better grading than 100% sand. In this research, standard concrete tests, such as the slump test for fresh concrete, and compression, tensile and shrinkage tests for hardened concrete, were conducted. Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis were also conducted for microstructural investigation. The results concluded that the combinations of quarry dust and nickel slag in concrete as a whole substitution of sand provide similar results for these properties. Specifically, 25% quarry dust with 75% nickel slag proved to be the most promising alternative to sand, with compressive and splitting tensile strengths of 62 and 4.29 MPa, respectively, which were 16% and 20% higher than those of the control mix. Also, lower drying shrinkage was observed for this combination compared to the control mix. The higher strength is attributed to the rough texture and angular shape of both quarry dust and nickel slag providing a better mechanical interlocking. The validity of this result has also been confirmed through image analysis of micrographs from various specimens. In microstructural investigations, specimens with QD and FNS exhibited fewer voids and a more compact surface compared to the control specimen. This shows the potential for further research into the use of quarry dust and nickel slag in the production of green concrete.

Microstructural investigation of hybrid CAD/CAM restorative dental materials by micro-CT and SEM

ObjectivesAn increasing number of CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing) hybrid materials have been introduced to the dental market in recent years. In addition, CAD/CAM hybrid materials for additive manufacturing (AM) are becoming more attractive in digital dentistry. Studies on material microstructures using micro-computed tomography (µ-CT) combined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) have only been available to a limited extent so far. MethodsOne CAD/CAM three-dimensional- (3D-) printable hybrid material (VarseoSmile Crown plus) and two CAD/CAM millable hybrid materials (Vita Enamic; Voco Grandio), as well as one direct composite material (Ceram.x duo), were included in the present study. Cylindrical samples with a diameter of 2 mm were produced from each material and investigated by means of synchrotron radiation µ-CT at a voxel size of 0.65 µm. Different samples from the same materials, obtained by cutting and polishing, were investigated by SEM. ResultsThe 3D-printed hybrid material showed some agglomerations and a more irregular distribution of fillers, as well as a visible layered macrostructure and a few spherical pores due to the printing process. The CAD/CAM millable hybrid materials revealed a more homogenous distribution of ceramic particles. The direct composite material showed multiple air bubbles and microstructural irregularities based on manual processing. SignificanceThe µ-CT and SEM analysis of the materials revealed different microstructures even though they belong to the same class of materials. It could be shown that µ-CT and SEM imaging are valuable tools to understand microstructure and related mechanical properties of materials.

Microstructure, microhardness, tensile and fatigue investigation on laser shock peened Ti6Al4V manufactured by high layer thickness directed energy deposition additive manufacturing

Thin layer thickness in additive manufacturing (AM) has always been a hindering factor leading to long completion times. Increasing layer thickness is accompanied by a higher tendency of surface cracks and inferior mechanical properties. These can be improved with laser shock peening (LSP). Emphasizing on the high layer thickness, this paper elucidates the high-layer thickness laser directed energy deposition (LDED) AM and the effects of LSP on the fabricated parts. Primary focus was given to the investigation of surface microcracks, microstructures, tensile and fatigue properties. Ti6Al4V bulk sample was prepared using the LDED process. Tensile, fatigue, and other samples were extracted to investigate the above-mentioned properties using different characterization tools such as optical microscope, scanning electron microscope, Vickers microhardness tester, and universal testing machine. Results showed proper depositions without major defects despite the high-layer thickness. Micro-cracks were limited to the surface only, and typical Widmanstätten patterns with parallel α lath and mixed α+β microstructures are observed. Yield strength (YS) varied from 730 MPa to 940 MPa, while ultimate tensile strength (UTS) ranged from 799.5 MPa to 953.75 MPa. Even though laser peening significantly improved micro-hardness by 49.81 % on average, not all fatigue samples observed enhanced fatigue life. A maximum improvement of 40.34 % in fatigue performance was observed in the LDED+LSPed samples. The strain hardening, plastic deformation, and grain refinement during the LSP process contributed to the enhanced mechanical properties. Some samples’ reduced fatigue life may be due to the anisotropic nature of additively manufactured parts, internal defects, and surface cracks on the specific samples. Considering high layer thickness, vertical orientation of samples, and as-prepared samples, our research shows a promising high layer thickness additive manufacturing process. The current research can be used as a base for further study on other properties and characteristics.
