Solitary impacted supernumerary tooth nudging the nasal cavity

Mesiodens is the most frequent type of supernumerary tooth, found in the central position of the upper or lower jaw. It presents in between the central incisors either erupted or impacted. Supernumerary teeth are developmental variations characterized by extra teeth besides the normal dentition. This condition is referred to as hyperdontia. The diagnosis of mesiodens is usually an accidental finding through a radiograph, which was intended for investigation of the neighboring teeth. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment are necessary for prevention of deleterious effects on the surrounding dentoalveolar structures. This case report describes the diagnosis and management of an undiagnosed inverted mesiodens along with a palatally impacted maxillary canine in a patient undergoing orthodontic treatment.

An incidental radiographic finding of an inverted mesiodens — A case report with a comprehensive review

Supernumerary teeth (ST) are uncommon developmental disorders that can be seen in either of the dental arches. Mesiodens is the most common type of ST. The experience of observing one such case is reported along with a literature review. This article describes a clinical case of a 46-year-old female patient with an impacted inverted mesiodens that was diagnosed accidentally during the routine radiographic examination. The mesiodens was very close to the nasal floor. Advanced radiographic investigations (CBCT) was advised for locating the exact position of mesiodens. The patient was counselled regarding the potential complications of ST and was advised for the surgical removal of the mesiodens, but the patient denied the treatment as ST was not causing any immediate problem. Therefore, the patient is under the continuous follow-up to avoid any complications with the mesiodens. The present case focuses on the importance of careful clinical and radiographic assessment in the diagnosis of ST, especially when they are asymptomatic. Patients should be educated regarding the same with proper explanations of all the treatment options.

An impacted inverted mesiodens and its surgical intervention

An inverted mesiodens is a rare complication of the developing dentition. This case report is of a 6-year-old female child in whom this mesiodens was discovered before the eruption of permanent incisors when radiographs were taken to ascertain the condition of her carious primary maxillary incisors. The inverted mesiodens were surgically removed, which was followed by eruption of the permanent central incisors within a few days.

Management of an impacted inverted mesiodens associated with a large circumferential type of dentigerous cyst: A rare case report with one-year follow-up

Introduction: A dentigerous cyst is a developmental cyst of odontogenic origin, which apparently develops by accumulation of fluid between the reduced enamel epithelium and the tooth crown of an unerupted tooth, with consequent expansion of tooth follicle. It may be associated with crown of unerupted teeth, odontomas, or supernumerary teeth. Ninety-five percent of dentigerous cysts are associated with permanent dentition whereas only 5% are with supernumerary teeth.

A dentigerous cyst is an odontogenic cyst associated with the crown of the impacted or unerupted teeth. Such cyst remain initially completely asymptomatic unless when infected and can be discovered only on routine radiographic examination. Dentigerous cyst involving an inverted mesiodens—a rare report with unusual findings

Dentigerous cysts are developmental cysts of odontogenic origin, which surround the crown of unerupted teeth, odontomas, or supernumerary teeth. It is formed by the accumulation of fluid between the reduced enamel epithelium and the crown, with consequent expansion of the tooth follicle, and is characteristically attached to the cervical area of the tooth. Dentigerous cysts involving an inverted mesiodens is a rare occurrence with only few cases reported. The aim of this article is to report a case of a dentigerous cyst of the anterior maxilla involving an impacted and inverted mesiodens which is extremely rare and unusual.

A 60-year-old woman underwent multislice whole-body computed tomography for staging of a high-risk melanoma of the anus. Trauma‐induced dentigerous cyst involving an inverted impacted mesiodens: case report

There have been only a small number of studies on the association of dentigerous cysts with supernumerary teeth. The purpose of this article was to report the case of a dentigerous cyst associated with an impacted inverted mesiodens that developed secondary to trauma to its predecessor, a non-vital permanent maxillary central incisor. As a consequence of trauma, the central incisor's root development was prematurely arrested and the open apex lay close to the follicle of the underlying inverted mesiodens. The negligent attitude of both the child and parent in seeking dental treatment was a contributing factor. The case was further complicated by impaction of the adjacent permanent central incisor due to the presence of another unerupted but normally oriented mesiodens. Occlusal and Intraoral periapical radiographs revealed a well-defined radiolucent area surrounding the inverted mesiodens. Microscopic examination revealed a cystic cavity that was lined by 2-3 cell thick non-keratinized stratified squamous epithelium resembling reduced enamel epithelium. Dentigerous cysts associated with impacted permanent teeth are not uncommon but the cysts which are induced by trauma are uncommon. Development of trauma-induced dentigerous cyst around an inverted impacted mesiodens associated with the periapical area of a traumatized, non-vital, immature permanent central incisor is a rare occurrence.
